Partnerships extend services to more of Hawaii’s people and animals While the Hawaiian Humane Society may be best known for its work sheltering and rehoming pets, its broader mission strives to create a more humane community for both people and animals. Partnerships help extend Hawaiian Humane’s reach deeper into the community, helping youth, families and people with myriad needs. Working together toward a unified goal of fostering compassion helps to ensure the success of the Society’s mission. Keeping Families Together In 2015, the Hawaiian Humane Society partnered with the Institute for Human Services (IHS) to help break down the barriers homeless pet owners face when seeking shelter. During a recent visit to IHS’s pet-friendly shelter, Hale Mauliola, Society staff along with volunteer veterinarian Dr. Carolyn Naun provided pet wellness checks, microchips, deworming and flea treatment, as well as offered coupons for free spay/neuter services. In addition, the Hawaiian Humane Society recently created a “Petiquette” workshop for Hale Mauliola guests. The pet-friendly housing development at Sand Island is a stepping stone for homeless adults who are bound for permanent housing. “Petiquette” training helps pet owners acquire the skills they need to live in harmony with landlords and neighbors.
The Hawaiian Humane Society believes that anyone can be a responsible pet owner and hopes this outreach effort will mean people will not have to choose between their pets and having a roof over their heads. Reuniting Families The Hawaiian Humane Society has strengthened its relationship with two high-traffic Facebook groups, Paw Posse Ohana and Stolen Stuff Hawaii. These two groups have each developed unique and powerful relationships with their online followers.

Paw Posse Ohana is an online community dedicated to finding lost pets and reuniting them with their owners. Working hand-in-hand with the Society’s lost and found team, Paw Posse’s network of volunteers has reunited 800 pets with their owners since January. A woman known by Makamae is one of the founders and administrators facilitating these family reunions around the island. “Since the Hawaiian Humane Society is the lost and found hub for the island of Oahu, it was only natural for us to partner with them to assist with
reuniting pets with their families,” she said. “We are thankful for our partnership with Hawaiian Humane, by working as a team we are able to help more lost pets be reunited with their families.” Stolen Stuff Hawaii has more than 112,000 members and covers a wide variety of topics on all islands, including missing persons, current events, lost and found pets and law enforcement. Celebrating 135 years of building a more compassionate community On July 24 the Hawaiian Humane Society celebrates 135 years of serving the people and pets of Hawaii. More than a century ago, the Society was founded with a mission to create a more humane and compassionate society for both people and animals. Today, we remain committed to those same goals. Our mission to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals is about creating the social change needed to build a community that embraces those values. Our efforts have resulted in the passage of significant laws including creating a felony animal cruelty law, mandating veterinary care to prevent suffering, a cat protection ordinance, the inclusion of pets in temporary restraining orders, and so much more.
In addition, since 1992 the Hawaiian Humane Society has provided low-fee FreeRoaming cat sterilizations for members of the community caring for cats on the landscape. More than 60,000 Free-Roaming Lisa cats have been sterilized Fowler serves as as a result of this President program. & CEO. The Society is about to complete construction of a multimillion-dollar effort to increase the availability of affordable cat and dog sterilization services for the community. Oahu’s first freestanding high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter clinic will open this fall at Hawaiian Humane’s Moiliili campus. While it also will serve pet animals, this specialized facility will be primarily dedicated to significantly reducing the number of cats on the landscape. The Society has always recognized the importance of instilling compassion and humane values in our youth. Today our education team consists of three full-time humane educators who focus on developing school and community partnerships. Our humane education team promotes messages of empathy and responsibility with teen-run service learning projects, peer-topeer education, school-wide projects and events that engage communities to help animals while creating more compassionate people. As one of our nation’s oldest animal welfare orginizations, the Hawaiian Humane Society is the leader in advocating for the animals of continued on page 3

Jail sentence brings justice for Tulip A three-year-old dog named Tulip has found justice thanks to concerned community members who reported a pattern of animal cruelty.
Tulip was adopted by the Hawaiian Humane foster family who took her in while her case was being investigated. She is thriving in her new home and will require life-long specialized care as a result of the injuries she sustained.
Tulip was taken into the Hawaiian Humane Society’s care last year after the staff at a veterinary clinic alerted the Society to a pattern of physical trauma. The harm suffered by Tulip included head injuries, broken ribs and a fractured pelvis. Due to poor care from her owners following her pelvic injuries, her right rear leg eventually had to be amputated.
“We hope this sends a message that our court system understands that animal cruelty is a serious crime,” said Lisa Fowler, president & CEO of the Hawaiian Humane Society. This is the second Oahu animal cruelty case in the past year to result in incarceration. The most recent was serial animal abuser James Montgomery who just completed a nine-month jail sentence.
Following an investigation, Tulip’s owner relinquished custody of her and Steven Boos, the owner’s boyfriend, pleaded no contest to animal cruelty in the second degree. Judge Trish Morikawa rejected Boos’ request for a deferral, which would have made it possible for him to eventually have the conviction removed from his criminal record.
Montgomery was convicted after the Hawaiian Humane Society rescued 33 sick and starving dogs from his home in May of 2016, including Cheddar, who had been left for dead in a trash bin.
Boos was sentenced on June 22 to 30 days in jail for the abuse Tulip endured. In addition, Boos was assessed a fine, ordered to do 50 hours of community service and required to serve a year’s probation, during which time he is prohibited from owning animals.
“There is a strong correlation between animal cruelty and violence toward people. The Society is grateful to Judge Morikawa for recognizing the magnitude of this crime,” Fowler said.

The progress toward enhancing the Society’s mission is a credit to past and present staff, board members, volunteers and community members committed to educating people, rescuing abused animals, and serving as a voice for the voiceless. Community members step up for kittens Kitten season runs from late spring to early fall, when the days grow longer. During this season, breeding among cats increases two-fold, resulting in hundreds of kittens entering the Hawaiian Humane Society’s doors and thousands entering shelters nationally. To help more kittens in the community find families, the Society held three Kitten Clinics this spring. The Kitten Clinics were created as a way to assist community members caring for kittens with affordable services. During the one-day clinics, cats between eight weeks and six months old were welcomed to the Society for spay/neuter surgery, microchipping, flea treatment and vaccinations for a low fee. Another important approach to help cats during this season was to
support community members caring for kittens who were in need. Kitten kits were filled with items needed to nurture kittens successfully. Help for Rescuers In the past few months, the Society has assisted rescue groups Paws of Hawaii and Kaaawa K9 with spay/neuter surgeries and other medical treatment for dogs in their care.
The visits also inspire life goals, said Allen Aludino, a juvenile detention officer at Hale Hoomalu. “After a presentation on careers with animals, one of the youths commented that he wanted to work with animals in the future,” he said. “These presentations have benefited the youths by involving them in caring for other living beings in our society.”
In addition to attending to the needs of animals in its care, the Hawaiian Humane Society team is committed to assisting other groups whenever possible. This means even more animals receive the care they need.
The power of partnerships proves we truly are better together. Collaborating with other organizations gives the Society a broader reach into the community. Working with animal advocates from diverse backgrounds toward a unified goal of compassion for people and animals will ensure the success of Hawaiian Humane’s mission into the future.

Kristy Stout, Hawaiian Humane Society’s enrichment coordinator, oversees the Single Marine and Sailor volunteers and finds them to be incredibly helpful. “The Single Marine and Sailor members take the dogs for long walks or runs,” she said. “They all come back tired and happy, which in turn, gets them settled in for a day of meeting potential new families.”

An estimated 48,000 households on Oahu include a feline family member. While pet owners typically know their feline’s favorite napping spot, there is so much more to what makes these animals tick.

Lots of sleep is natural. While your cat may not be dozing off because she’s exhausted from hunting last night, it is natural for her to sleep about 15 hours a day. Cats spend at least two-thirds of their lives asleep and are most active between dusk and dawn. Cats are born athletes. A cat can jump up to five times his own height in a single bound. They can also run at about 30 mph, while the average speed of a person is 22 mph. Purring can mean stress. Most cats purr when they’re happy, content and comfortable, but cats also purr to calm themselves when they’re distressed or afraid. It’s important to read your cat’s body language and also observe the environment around her to figure out if she is purring to calm herself down or because she’s happy. Cats don’t meow at one another. Meowing is how cats communicate with people. They’re usually saying hello or

Students islandwide encourage others to be kind to animals Be Kind to Animals Week is an annual celebration that was started by the American Humane Association in 1915 and first observed in Hawaii in 1916. To promote the importance of kindness and compassion in local neighborhoods, the Hawaiian Humane Society encouraged youth across Oahu to form roadside rally teams and raise awareness for animals. About 200 students from different schools and organizations participated in sign waving and cheering on behalf of animals in Hawaii during the first full week in May.
Anticipation rises for public spay/neuter center Guests visiting the Hawaiian Humane Society may have recently noticed construction underway. The Society is anticipating the opening of its public spay/neuter center this fall. This specialized spay/neuter center will provide high-quality, high-volume, low-fee sterilizations for owned pets
and Free-Roaming cats. About 8,000 surgeries will be performed annually. “We are pleased to be able to offer more accessible spay/neuter options to the community,” said Lisa Fowler, president & CEO of the Hawaiian Humane Society. “Sterilization is so

Teen council works to make a difference The Hawaiian Humane Society invited Oahu high school students, ages 15 years and older to take part in the Society’s Teens4Animals Council for 2018-2019. This new and exciting opportunity was offered to animalloving teens who want to make a difference in their community. The program allows students to develop, promote and lead school and community animal welfare initiatives and events throughout their one-year term. Students were selected for the year-long appointment through an application process which asked questions like “What types of programs or initiatives related to animal welfare would you like to develop or participate in as a council member?” Aulii Silva from Kamehameha Schools – Kapalama wanted to be an animal advocate. “I joined Teen Council because I wanted to be able to speak up for the animals in my community, who don’t have a voice,” she said. Amanda Ishida of Kailua High School agreed. “I applied to be a part of the

welfare issues, enjoy hands-on time with animals and learn about what it takes to be a responsible pet owner. Throughout the year, they will be featured in media interviews, plan and execute events and advocate for animals by educating their peers and other community members.

Help your pets beat the heat this summer Summer is a great time for people and their pets to be active and enjoy the outdoors together. As we head into hot months, it’s important to remember to keep pets safe during the rising temperatures. A little awareness and prevention can make exploring Oahu’s 35 dog-friendly parks and more than 100 beaches a great experience. Visit HawaiianHumane.org to find a dog-friendly beach or park near you.
Hawaiian Humane Society offers basic tips to stay safe during the hot summer.
Stay indoors during the hottest period of the day, which is 11 am to 3 pm.
Take an ample supply of water and rest at the early signs of overheating.
Just as you wouldn’t leave a baby in a car unattended, don’t leave your pets.
If you do venture outdoors, do research to ensure that your path is shaded and try to go as early in the morning as possible. Pay attention and listen to your own body cues; if you are hot or tired, your pet is probably experiencing even greater distress.
Symptoms of pet overheating include heavy panting, excessive drooling, fatigue or weakness, pale or blue gums and an unwillingness to continue walking.
A car can become an oven with temperatures that rise quickly and even a fast trip to grab a few snacks could become deadly. If you find an animal left in a car and fear they may be in immediate danger, call 911.
Kokua for animals on Hawaii Island In May, the Hawaiian Humane Society was a collection point for those wishing to donate much needed items to help people and pets displaced by the eruption of Kilauea on the Big Island. Dog crates, cat traps, towels and other supplies were shipped over to the Hawaii Island Humane Society to assist them as they respond to animal emergencies resulting from volcanic activity. 11
