No justice for a Haleiwa dog slain by owner Many elements go into building a successful animal cruelty case: a call from a concerned citizen, swift and meticulous case work, partnership with the police, a determined prosecution and a judge to ensure justice. Yet even if all of these stars are in alignment, justice doesn’t always prevail. When a North Shore woman brutally killed her family’s pet dog
named Star with a kitchen knife, the Hawaiian Humane Society teamed up with the Honolulu Police Department to investigate. She killed her dog in an effort to discipline Star for sniffing her daughter and then called 911 to report the crime. It was one of the most gruesome animal crime scenes that the Humane Society has witnessed in recent history. A felony animal cruelty case was opened and the Society began
working closely with Prosecutor Janice Futa. The Society’s medical experts also provided key testimony. After a trial with no jury, Judge Richard Perkins found the defendant not guilty by reason of mental disease. She has been permitted to return to her residence with her child. When it comes to cats, you’re mama! milk flowing. The purring and kneading are behaviors that we commonly experience with our feline friends and are an expression of their affection for us as mother figures. And when cats approach us with an upright tail and give us that insistent, heavenly rub, Bradshaw asserts that these furry feline children of ours are enjoying us as their fellow felines.
Cats charm us like no other animal and nearly 40 percent of Oahu residents either own a cat or feed one that they don’t consider their own. Cats, with their mischievous antics, dominate the web in videos gone viral. Unquestionably, the collective World Wide Web is a “cat person,” so to speak. Cat lover Dr. John Bradshaw, University of Bristol biologist and author of the newly released book “Cat Sense,” offers his insightful perspective on our feline friends and has studied animal behavior and cats for the last 30 years. Bradshaw points out an interesting fact. A cat’s strongest social bond is between a mother and her kittens. Kittens purr as a signal to their mothers to stay still and feed them, and they knead their mother’s belly to keep the

It’s not uncommon that the Humane Society finds child welfare issues when animal abuse occurs. “The Link” is a well-documented and a proven correlation between animal abuse and family violence. It’s recognized by child and animal welfare experts nationwide. When animals in a home are abused or neglected, it is a warning sign that others in the household may not be safe.
Humane Society History In 1897, Helen Kinau Wilder became the first woman in Hawaii to become a police officer and obtained the authority to enforce animal cruelty laws. Wilder was passionate about law enforcement but also stressed education. She began The Humane Educator, a monthly publication that shared local and national animal welfare news.
More than 1,000 people have expressed their outrage about this case on Facebook and hundreds more have shared the story through their own news feeds. Special thanks to Janice Futa and the Prosecutor’s office for taking on this case so that Star could have his day in court and his story told. 2
Staying with us just got cozier The Society has established the Dickens Housing Fund with an initial gift from animal lovers and philanthropists Larry and Patricia Rodriguez. The fund provides a
bed for every pet and furnishings that reduce stress and relieve boredom. In addition, a portion of the Cat House got a makeover with new furniture that gives the cats more room to play and nap. The Society estimates that at least $10,000 will be needed annually. Anyone wishing to contribute to this ongoing fund can send gifts to the Hawaiian Humane Society, attention to: Dickens Housing Fund.
Homeless, not hopeless With no time limit to meet their perfect match, some animals reside at the Society for weeks or months before getting adopted. The Reid Krucky Memorial Fund sponsors the adoptions fee and includes gifts for dogs who are long-term residents at the Humane Society. This memorial fund was established in April by the Krucky family, whose teenage son Reid passed away in 2013. Their ohana’s affection for dogs gives hope to our canine friends with this loving legacy gift.
Exploiting wild animals leads to life of suffering Imagine what an animal must think and feel when it’s loaded as cargo on a ship to travel thousands of miles across the Pacific Ocean. It’s unfathomable to ponder their fear and stress, locked in a container with no access to a natural environment, forced to endure life at sea. The 50th State Fair at Aloha Stadium and its promoters would like us to believe that the three grizzly bears and four sea lions imported from the Mainland are entertainment for us all, and that using wild animals in traveling shows educates the public. While seeing a bear in its natural habitat, or one that closely replicates its natural environment such as a wildlife park, can be educational, what these animals endure for applause and profit is exploitation. Wild or undomesticated animals
have well-established psychological, behavioral and environmental needs. For these reasons, the Humane Society believes that wild animals should not be used in circuses, shows and exhibits. These events have a desensitizing effect, causing people to be unsympathetic to animal suffering. As the Honolulu Star-Advertiser stated in its editorial: “The operators of A Grizzly Experience tout the display of three brown bears at the 50th State Fair as educational, but we’re not buying it. Anybody who wants to learn about how these majestic creatures 3
truly live in the wild would be better off watching a documentary on PBS, not observing captive, trained Alaskan grizzlies performing in Hawaii’s heat. The bears in A Grizzly Experience spend six to eight months every year on the road, working, as they travel with their owners from fair to fair. It’s not anything close to a natural existence.” When the 2015 legislation session begins, the Society will advocate for legislation to ban the importation of wild animals for entertainment. Tuxes & Tails rolls out the red carpet Special thanks to so many who contributed their time, talents, goods or services, including Chanel for their dazzling donation of a luxury watch, which raised nearly $10,000 for the animals through ticket sales. The evening’s top seller was a dinner for 16 guests at Stan Cadwallader and Jim Nabor’s home featuring the culinary creations of 53 by the Sea’s chef Thomas Ho, which went for $30,000 to Bob Momsen and Jim Whitcomb.
The Hawaiian Humane Society’s April 2014 gala at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel raised a record-breaking $667,000 for the animals. Hollywoof: A Night at the A-cat-emy featured cocktails with canines, a gourmet dinner and a surprise performance by Event Co-chair Jim Nabors and Table Sales Chair Ginny Tiu. Our most generous sponsors of the evening included Humane Society friends Bob and Frances Bean, Barry and Virginia Weinman, Ginny Tiu, Jim & Lynn Lally, Alice Robinson, Dr. Richard & Elizabeth Grossman, Joan Bellinger and the Schuler Family Foundation. This group collectively raised $185,000. More than 500 guests attended the event this year.

Center of Hawaii (VERC) came to the aid of a small dog named Cuddle Boy who was surrendered to the Society by his owner. Our veterinary team discovered he had a perineal hernia, a painful condition that prevented him from relieving himself. VERC took in tiny Cuddle Boy and performed the extensive surgery at a large discount to the Humane Society.

Jocelyn Bouchard joins the Humane Society’s team as director of operations.
In May, the Society welcomed Jocelyn Bouchard as its new director of operations. She will be overseeing several departments including animal care, admissions, adoptions, lost and found services, as well as rescues and investigations. She brings over 30 years of experience in animal welfare and

Safety tips for the summer sun Temperatures are rising and days are getting longer – looks like it’s time for summer. As you throw on those rubbah slippahs and head out the door with your furry companion, keep these tips in mind. Made in the Shade Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water. Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun, be careful not to over-exercise them and keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot.

“Read & Relax” with Humane Society dogs The Hawaiian Humane Society makes it a priority to provide enrichment opportunities and activities to keep animals awaiting adoption stimulated and happy. Earlier this year the Humane Society began its Read & Relax program. It quickly became a new favorite among volunteers who now can end a busy afternoon with a calming activity that also allows them to give a few dogs one-on-one attention.
Enrichment Coordinator Andrew Mathias started the Read & Relax program to teach calm behavior.
“These programs are invaluable as they help teach them good behaviors that will help them get adopted and transition easier into their new home,” said Enrichment Coordinator Andrew Mathias who started the program. Go to HawaiianHumane.org to learn more about our volunteer program. 9
“Kitten Shower” draws enthusiastic crowd The Society’s first Kitten Shower in April attracted dozens of people who were excited to meet and cuddle kittens in need of foster homes. More than 100 kittens each month during kitten season will need foster families so that the Humane Society can save more lives.
Guests brought donations of food and toys to the shower.
The public was invited to bring gifts to the Shower including nursing bottles, toys and pate-style cat and kitten food from the Society’s Wish List. She can’t find home on her own A lost or missing pet is a traumatic experience for both owners and animals alike. For the lucky, more than 3,000 find their way home every year. Nearly all of these family reunions are because pet parents armed their furry family members with an ID. About 7 percent of cats and 38 percent of dogs are reunited on Oahu through the Humane
Society. Nationally, the reunion rate is 2 percent for cats and 17 percent for dogs.

Thousands of animals arrive to the Humane Society lost every year and a few simple remedies can ensure pets can find their way home.
Dog License. City & County of Honolulu law requires that all dogs, four months or older, have and wear a county-issued license tag. This identifies you as the legal owner as well. A tag can be purchased at any Satellite City Hall or at Hawaiian Humane Society.
Microchip ID. Microchips are used for pet identification and are about the size of a grain of rice and are injected under the skin. The Hawaiian Humane Society keeps an island-wide microchip database. Be sure that your pet’s microchip information is always up-to-date with the Society and the microchip’s manufacturer. Students speak out for animals in their community Hawaiian Humane Society is in pursuit of second location in west Oahu to meet the growing population of animals and people. Until then, the Society continues to take its mission on the road with creative offerings to promote responsible pet ownership and community empowerment to help animals. Our youth education team led a contest that was open to all middle and high school youth that reside in Waianae, Nanakuli, Kapolei, Ewa Beach, Waipahu or Pearl City. Walking With Purpose Central Pacific Bank Foundation employees, family, foundation and friends raised $40,612 for the Hawaiian Humane Society at their annual CPB Walks For You event. Space Savers Mahalo to Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association for sponsoring the Humane Society’s booth space at this year’s Pet Expo in May. Art for the Animals Three cheers to artists John Koga, Satoru Abe, Kelly Sueda, Lawrence Seward, Nicole Naone and Maile Yawata who raised $12,250 by donating a portion of the proceeds from their art show opening. Girl Power President Obama’s niece, Suhalia Soetoro-Ng, set up a tour for her girl scout troop so they could see firsthand why she loves volunteering with the animals every week and together they raised $130 to donate to the animals.

Pet Stars Hawaiian Telcom hosted the Ohana Pet Photo contest and donated $1,000 to the animals in honor of Allysa Robert’s pet Basil, the contest winner. Future Animal Lovers Mid-Pacific Institute elementary students rallied together and held a three-day pet-food drive. Together, they collected more than 12 cases of canned dog food for animals in need. Mustang Madness Mike McKenna’s Windward Ford’s Mustang Madness event raised $1,958 for the animals. Mahalo to the McKenna family and Hana Boy for their support.
