A MESSAGE FROM ANNA In ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i, the word “kōkua” means help, aid, assistance and relief, particularly by pitching in as a community. The spirit of this word is something I take to heart as it runs parallel to our mission at the Hawaiian Humane Society and the actions we take to uphold it every day. It is also a key tenet of Socially Conscious Sheltering, the animal sheltering model we have embraced since my tenure began at Hawaiian Humane more than two years ago. Socially Conscious Shelters know that fostering a culture of collaboration and continual learning is key to making the largest possible impact for a community and its pets. Community issues require community solutions. To be a socially conscious animal welfare leader, we must remain curious and look for innovative solutions to common problems. We must be generous and share those solutions with our partners in the community who are working toward the same objectives. We must kōkua our community. The second you step foot on our campus, it’s easy to see the passion, dedication and hard work of our team of staff and volunteers – work that keeps our doors open and our animals happy, healthy and safe every day. What is harder to see, yet plays just as integral a part in our successes, are the partnerships we have forged with organizations devoted to human and animal welfare in the community around us. There is not a single function of our organization that has not been positively affected by a partnership or collaborative effort. From our offsite adoption and transfer partners helping us place more pets in loving homes and our education partners providing student volunteers and expertise, to our Pet Kōkua outreach program’s collaborative boots-on-the-ground work in our underserved communities and our advocacy partners in both the Hawai‘i Animal Welfare Association (HAWA) and the O‘ahu Animal Welfare Alliance

(OAWA) – we all work together to create the best outcomes for the people and pets in our community. It is through each of these partnerships, as well as those we continue to strengthen in business, government, social services, conservation and beyond, that we are able to accomplish all that we do. This issue of Paw Prints explores many of these partnerships and how we work collaboratively every day to make our ultimate vision a reality – creating a truly humane society for all of our people and pets to thrive. Teamwork makes the dream work! Hawaiian Humane’s staff sees the power of the human-animal bond every day. In September 2021, one of our unsheltered neighbors was admitted to the hospital for an infected wound and his four beloved dogs were brought to our shelter. We contacted the owner to let him know his dogs were safe in our care. When he was told the dogs, who were not microchipped, would be held for 48 hours, he was ready to check himself out of the hospital in order to keep his pets. Wanting him to receive the care he needed, our team was happy to hold his dogs for the couple of extra days his treatment required and we asked his permission to spay/neuter his dogs to prevent unplanned litters. With the owner’s consent, his pets were treated at the Hawaiian Humane Society before returning to his care. Over the past few years, our partnerships with like-minded organizations have expanded across the state in a wonderfully intricate web of collaboration, innovation and forward motion toward our common goal. A nexus for many of these partnerships is our Pet Kōkua program which launched in 2019 and has since grown to be a vital intervention point for pet surrenders, animal cruelty, neglect and pet overpopulation. A few weeks after our houseless client reunited with his four dogs, he reached out to our Pet Kōkua team for help once again. One of his dogs had developed a severe ear infection that was causing such pain and discomfort that he was

unable to administer medication without assistance. We made an appointment for him and his dog at a pop-up pet wellness clinic at the Filipino Community Center where our partner Dr. Amanda Dale from Dale Veterinary Mobile Clinic was not only able to treat his dog’s ear infection, but was also able to provide general wellness exams, flea/tick preventatives and vaccines for all four of his dogs. This past February, our Pet Kōkua Outreach Center in Waipahu celebrated one year of service to our central and West O‘ahu communities. The launch of this physical outpost for our Pet Kōkua program marked an inflection point where our collaborative outreach efforts really accelerated the amount of good we were able to do in our community. As our outreach and education programs began adding a variety of services including pet wellness clinics, low-cost or free microchipping, free vaccinations at events and virtual education opportunities, we knew that we had to work with the community, in the community to help the community. We began collaborating with organizations like Hawaii Food Bank, The Pantry and a community of donors who buy pet food so that we can share it with other human and animal welfare organizations like Waianae Wags, the Domestic Violence Action Center (DVAC) and the Institute for Human Services (IHS). These relationships, and our membership in

Partners in Care, opened doors for us with many shelters and agencies around the island to host pet wellness clinics and provide services like spay/neuter surgeries for a new demographic of people, all of whom were previously unable to access our services at our Mō‘ili‘ili campus. “There is a need beyond our brick and mortar walls, and beyond the people who have the ability to visit our physical facilities,” shared Shelly Carmona, Hawaiian Humane’s community outreach coordinator. “We knew this, but didn’t truly understand the vastness of it until we actually got in the field and got to see firsthand how many people are out there who need our services–people who never even knew that they could have access to these kinds of services for their pet.” Since February 2021, we have been able to hold pet wellness clinics, mass pet vaccination clinics and/ or microchipping clinics at Sand Island, Keauhou Shelter, Kealahou

West O‘ahu, Punawai Rest Stop, Waianae Civic Center, the Filipino Community Center and James Campbell High School with the help of partners like Dale Veterinary Mobile Clinic, the Windward Community College Veterinary Technology Program, IHS and more. Having access to low-cost veterinary services like vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries through these clinics have enabled some members of our houseless community to qualify for permanent housing with their pets. From February 2021 to February 2022, the Pet Kōkua program helped

pets and people stay together by: • Vaccinating 117 animals, microchipping 96 animals and providing general wellness exams for 85 animals. • Distributing 446 leashes and 554 collars • Facilitating 248 spay/neuter surgeries • Distributing 70,099 pounds of pet food to families in need These achievements reached in one year alone speak volumes to the value of collaboration in our community and the world of animal welfare. The Pet Kōkua program, and all of our valued partners,

strive to keep pets and their people together and improve the quality of life for all animals and their people by providing assistance to those who are in need. We are committed to strengthening and growing relationships through a culture of collaboration and building on our successes as there is still so much work to be done. In addition to outreach, the past few years have been monumental for collaboration in other aspects of Hawai‘i’s animal welfare landscape such as advocacy, conservation, business and government. HAPPY TAILS An unlikely pair find the sweetest friendship in the funniest way! Anne Mukai, Hawaiian Humane’s education programs coordinator, adopted her senior dog Ellie two years ago. They have been best friends ever since, and Ellie has recently turned ten. In January, Anne was taking Ellie outside for her usual sniff and potty routine when Ellie heard something in the bushes. After some searching, a tiny kitten emerged from the shrubs. Anne noticed that the kitten was limping, and it seemed that parts of her tail were missing. Although the kitten was hesitant to come to Anne, she surprisingly approached Ellie without hesitation. The kitten tried nuzzling up to Ellie and began to follow her every movement. While assessing the best way to help the kitten, Anne sat down in the grass to use her phone. When Ellie jumped into Anne’s lap, the kitten followed but quickly ran away when Anne reached out to her.

Anne searched again for the kitten, but this time to no avail. She decided to leave some food out for the kitten and headed back inside. She knew that the kitten needed assistance and started to brainstorm ways to capture her so she could seek help. Little did she know, Ellie was already on the case! While outside, Ellie was able to lure the kitten from her hiding place, and Anne was able to quickly scoop them both up while they played. She placed their newfound friend in her bathroom while making an appointment with Hawaiian Humane’s Ginny Tiu Community Spay/Neuter Center. She was able to get the kitten, whom she named Doja, spayed, vaccinated and microchipped through the Feline Fix program for Free-Roaming cats. A Hawaiian Humane veterinary technician informed Anne that Doja might have been hit by a car. Her leg

between Ellie and Doja, Anne and her family decided to let Doja stay with them and find out what kind of medical care the kitten might need. A local veterinarian took X-rays and found that Doja did in fact have a fractured leg. “We were originally planning to only foster her until she got better, but our family has grown way too attached to let her go! She’s Ellie’s new sister,” says Anne.

Doja, for one, is very happy being with Ellie wherever she goes. “Her favorite activity is stalking Ellie and jumping out to try and scare her, but she just ends up scaring herself,” shared Anne. The relationship between Doja and Ellie goes to show that the bond between animals can be just as strong, and is just as special, as the human-animal bond!

Advocacy update: Laws for Paws in 2022 The state of Hawai‘i recently ranked number one in improvement, year over year, in the 16th annual U.S. Animal Protection Laws Rankings Report (2021) by the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), the nation’s preeminent legal advocacy organization for animals. While the Hawaiian Humane Society chooses its advocacy priorities based on local needs, it is gratifying to see national recognition of the good work being done by Hawaiian Humane and our community advocates. ACT 31 criminalizing sexual assault of an animal and ACT 91 protecting veterinarians who render emergency aid to an animal and requiring veterinarians to report suspected animal cruelty were both cited by ALDF as important advances in our state animal laws. Hawaiian Humane also championed the passage of ACT 182, ”Buzz’s Law,” last year, which restricts dog tethering. “2020 and the passage of Bill 59 by the City & County of Honolulu

set the tone for the large gains we were able to make in 2021 in regard to how our entire state protects animals,” said Stephanie Kendrick, Director for Community Engagement for the Hawaiian Humane Society. “We are grateful to ALDF for this recognition that we are headed in the right direction as a state, community and organization. We are committed to building on that success as there is still an enormous amount of work to be done.” To continue that work, Hawaiian Humane has two top priorities in the current legislative session: improving access to veterinary care and securing a new source of spay/ neuter funding for pet animals and Free-Roaming cats. SB2798 and HB1598 Relating to Veterinary Medicine represent a collaboration between the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association, the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Board, the Veterinary Emergency + Referral Center of Hawaii and the Hawaiian Humane Society to restore a vital pathway for qualified out-of-state veterinarians to

practice in Hawaii on a temporary basis. The bills authorize the Hawaii Board of Veterinary Medicine to grant temporary courtesy and relief permits for out-of-state veterinarians, permit licensed veterinarians to practice veterinary telemedicine and allow for international veterinary school graduates to qualify for the licensure examination. They allow veterinarians licensed in good standing in other states or Canada to work in Hawai‘i at the invitation of a local veterinarian in emergency situations or if they qualify for either of two new types of temporary permit. Historically, these visiting veterinarians have provided vital services, including assistance with animal rescues and disaster response, such as Hawaiian Humane’s 2016 Waianae rescue. They have also contributed to high-quality, high-volume spay/

From page 7 neuter efforts, provided relief for private-practice and shelter veterinarians, and enabled access to specialties unavailable in the state. This measure is desperately needed to protect animals, provide access to care for pet owners and support our hardworking local veterinarians. SB2837 and HB1610 Relating to the Spaying and Neutering of Animals establish a spay and neuter special fund for the spay/neuter of pet cats and dogs and Free-Roaming cats, and allow funds from an income tax check-off to be deposited into the special fund. They have Hawaiian Humane’s strong support.

Pet animal and Free-Roaming cat overpopulation are persistent issues in Hawai‘i and efforts to reduce the resulting suffering through low- and no-fee spay/neuter receive no state funding. Rather than competing for general fund resources, this measure would allow compassionate state taxpayers to support a dedicated Spay/Neuter Fund by reducing the size of any income tax refund due. This lowbarrier way to contribute to an unmet need could make a world of difference for the nonprofit groups and veterinarians on the frontlines of animal welfare in our state.

Other measures we support

Other measures supported by Hawaiian Humane include attempts to curb the use of illegal fireworks, which terrorize pets and people across our islands; and increased protections for hunting dogs and egglaying hens.

#BettyWhiteChallenge Throughout her life, Betty White was a fierce advocate for animals, including the ones here on O‘ahu. In July 1988, Hawaiian Humane had the honor of welcoming Betty White to the campus for a tour and benefit event we called Night of Stars. During her tour, she spent hours visiting with our staff, volunteers and all the animals in our care. Betty was our “Honorary Chairperson of Celebrities” for the event and as such, she helped us bring fellow animal lovers like Jeanne Cooper, David Oliver, Jim Nabors and more to the event and helped us raise tens of thousands of dollars for the animals of O‘ahu.

On January 17, 2022, animal lovers around the world celebrated what would have been Betty White’s 100th birthday in a viral fundraising campaign aptly called the #BettyWhiteChallenge. This challenge called on fans of the late Golden Girl and outspoken advocate for animal welfare to donate $5 or more to their local

Hawaiian Humane joined the movement as many other organizations had done, less with the expectation of financial reward than with the desire to celebrate Betty and her lifelong commitment to making the world a kinder place for animals, which is so very aligned with our mission. However, during the week-long challenge,

an outstanding 1,048 supporters of Hawaiian Humane were able to raise over $41,000! All of the donations received will directly go toward caring and providing for O‘ahu's animals in need. We are humbled and so grateful to everyone who joined us in honoring Betty White. Her legacy is a strong one and is sure to do amazing things for our four-legged friends for years to come!

Supporter Spotlight Memorial Gifts Offer An Even More Meaningful Way to Support the Hawaiian Humane Society Two families recently demonstrated that a gift in memory of a loved one to the Hawaiian Humane Society can not only benefit Hawai‘i’s animals, but also helps keep the memory and spirit of a loved one alive in a meaningful way. The family and friends of Shelly Anne Guira, and of Shirley Anne Tavares-Wetzel both made gifts in memory of their loved ones and to recognize their commitment and love for animals. When Shelly passed away unexpectedly at the age of 49 from a cerebral hemorrhage, her sister Caroline and brother Jeffrey knew that they wanted to support her love of cats by raising donations in her name. “Shelly and I lived together for a number of years before I married,” Shelly’s sister Caroline explained. “We began to feed and care for homeless cats living near our home. The number of cats showing up for food eventually grew to about 18 and we realized the need to build a cat environment in our yard to temporarily house them. We’d take the cats to Hawaiian Humane Society to be spayed and neutered and then find homes for them among our friends. Shelly ended up taking in two of the cats as pets, a mother and its kitten. “Shelly wasn’t an ‘animal person’ at first, but she grew to love them, especially the two cats we took into our home, Momma Silva and her kitten Goldie. They adopted her as much as she adopted them.” “Shelly had a tough job as a family therapist,” added her brother Jeffrey. “It was a job that could be quite stressful because of the difficult family situations she sometimes had to service. her life and helped her to more effectively deal with the stress of her work. They really brought joy and peace to her life.” After Shelly’s death, Caroline and Jeffrey decided that they wanted their family to have something to remember her by and came up with the idea of designing and having printed t-shirts featuring Shelly’s photo surrounded by the cats that meant so much to her. The shirts were distributed at a celebration of her life and the family encouraged friends receiving the shirts to make a donation to cover the shirts’ cost with portion to be provided to the Hawaiian Humane Society. She was a teacher in Lahaina until about 10 years ago when she moved back to O‘ahu,” said Ann. “After her last dog died, Shirley would regularly visit the Hawaiian Humane Society to visit the dogs there,” added Kate. “She was 90 when she passed, so she wasn’t able to take in another large dog, but she still enjoyed spending time with the dogs awaiting adoption.”

went beyond the suggested donation amount and made larger donations to Hawaiian Humane in Shelly’s memory. Shirley Anne Tavares-Wetzel was a longtime lover of large dogs. For over 50 years, she always owned large dogs including, at different times, a Saint Bernard and a Newfoundland. She lived by a beach near Lahaina on Maui where she enjoyed taking the dogs and meeting the many passersby whose interest they attracted. They proved a great way for her to meet people and make new friends. Shirley’s friends Kate and Anne Villiers say her dogs provided her with companionship and unconditional

“When she died, we knew we wanted to make a donation that would reflect her love of dogs, so family and friends decided to make a memorial gift to Hawaiian Humane to name a dog kennel in her honor,” said Anne. “It’s a perfect way to keep her memory and connection with dogs alive. Introducing the Ginny Tiu Community Spay/Neuter Center! On February 21, a celebration was held at our Mō‘ili‘ili campus spay/neuter center to acknowledge devoted animal lover and board member Ginny Tiu for her incredible support and recent gift to support the programs and services provided through the center. At the reception, the center was officially renamed the Ginny Tiu Community Spay/Neuter Center in her honor! We thank Ginny for all of the time, energy and personal resources she has provided to ensure that O‘ahu’s animals have access to compassionate care, warm shelter, food and excellent veterinary services.

Hawaiian Humane’s Steph Kendrick Named Top Animal Defender Every year, the Animal Legal Defense Fund honors America's Top Animal Defenders – individuals who have made a significant difference for animal cruelty victims. This year, we are excited and honored to announce that our very own Stephanie Kendrick, director of community engagement, was among those awarded for her efforts against animal cruelty, specifically for her leadership in the comprehensive state legislative campaign that resulted in the passage of three significant animal protection bills, all of which took effect in the summer of 2021. Fostering saves lives! Foster volunteering is an extraordinary calling. Opening your heart and home to an animal in need takes great patience and love. Every animal that comes through Hawaiian Humane's doors has a story. Animals come to us at Hawaiian Humane for reasons beyond their control, and sometimes they arrive with health issues that require care, medical treatment and some extra love before they’re ready for adoption. That was the case when Tails, a 6-month-old puppy, came to Hawaiian Humane’s Admissions Center. Tails arrived with a terrible skin infection that was causing him a great deal of pain. His whole body was so swollen that he could barely move. Despite his condition, Tails earned his name by always wagging his tail when people were around. He had an unbreakable positive spirit and constantly wanted to be around good company. Our veterinary services team knew that he could make a full recovery, but he would need a lot of TLC before finding the perfect family. Olivia, a Hawaiian Humane staff member and foster volunteer, decided to open her home to Tails on his road to recovery. Although it took many weeks and she administered many medications and other medical treatments, she persevered in knowing that this puppy would recover and have a second chance at a happy and healthy life. After a few weeks and proper treatment and check-ins, Tails started to look healthier

and act more like himself! His spunky personality began to show, and his energy levels shot through the roof. When fully recovered, Olivia brought Tails back to the Hawaiian Humane Society. Although Tails bonded with her and the other animals in Olivia's home, she knew her duty was complete. The goodbye was bittersweet, but she felt good knowing she helped save a life. Tails eventually found a perfect family thanks to Oliva's hard work to keep him well and on track to a full recovery. Tails and Olivia’s story is just one example of how our foster volunteers help change the lives of animals and give them a comfortable and loving place to stay when they need it most. Aside from saving a pet's life, foster volunteering is a great way to do a "test run" to see if you are ready for the life-long commitment of a pet or just want to temporarily help a pet while they look for a new home. If you are willing and able to open your home and help with minor medical treatments for animals, Hawaiian Humane is always looking for foster volunteers– especially ahead of kitten season! WAGGIN’ TALES In February, a Marine Service Group from the Wounded Warrior Battalion volunteered their time with the animals to assist us with cleaning, maintenance projects and animal enrichment.
