A MESSAGE FROM ANNA As we head to print with this newsletter, Hawaii and the rest of the world is responding to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 (coronavirus) crisis. Our staff, donors, board members and animal-loving community is rising to the challenge and moving heaven and earth for our island's animals. Our collective focus has turned to the elemental parts of animal welfare. While we navigate this time of uncertainty, I want to share with you all of the work and energy that has gone into transforming our animal shelter these past few months. These changes have in many ways strengthened and prepared us for this challenge we are currently facing.
In our updated free-roaming feline sterilization contract with the city, we supported waving the fee for sterilization. Thanks to the city’s eager agreement, it is now free to spay/neuter a free-roaming cat. We have doubled our target for free-roaming sterilizations to 10,000 cats this year, and are seeking private grants and independent support to add to the funds the city provides.
My career in animal welfare has given me the opportunity to work in many different communities across the US. While there are differences from place to place, there is a consistent truth – the best places for animals are those where the entire community is involved and working together. That includes everyone – government, rescue groups, shelters and individuals.
We have added a fourth day to our Community Spay/ Neuter Clinic schedule and will increase that number as we are able to hire more veterinarians. The 10 new walk-in slots per day mean that many more freeroaming cats are being sterilized, and we are now vaccinating all the free-roaming cats we spay/neuter.
Knowing this, we have been energetically and eagerly reaching out to restore and build partnerships. We have invited community members and animal rescue volunteers to meet with us, share their ideas and concerns, tour our facility and help us define the contours of the changes that are so desperately needed. This is a complex field we are in. Rebuilding trust is not easy. But we are approaching this effort with a commitment to transparency and we are humbled by the welcome we have received. We have been busy. We have been energetically supporting laws that will save more animals, reduce suffering and reunite more pets with their owners. The recent update to the City animal welfare ordinance that requires microchipping will add Oahu to the list of municipalities that have seen dramatic jumps in pet and owner reunions. We proposed a ban on sexual assault on animals bringing Hawaii in line with the vast majority of states that consider this a crime. We supported bills that outlawed cruel and dangerous tethering of dogs, backyard surgeries, and that freed up veterinarians to perform emergency life-saving procedures on pets when their owners cannot be found. The passing of all these bills into law will represent a dramatic improvement in our island’s animal welfare statutes.
Knowing that FIV cats can live healthy and happy lives, we have created a special wing in our cat house for them and are encouraging the public to adopt them.
We are renovating critical infrastructure to ensure that animals in our care are safe, comfortable and protected from the elements. Working with partners in animal and human welfare, we are helping to provide services such as microchipping, spay/neuter, pet food, flea and tick treatment and vaccinations to pets whose owners have limited means. We are rebuilding our website and public-facing contact points to be able to deliver clearer information and access to resources. We know this is just the beginning and that there is so much more to do. However, we are energized by this effort and grateful to everyone who is a part of this transformation. Stepping up for Oahu’s animals As we were going to print with this new edition of Paw Prints, our island and the world was struck by what is now known as the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. In response, the Hawaiian Humane Society quickly adjusted hours and programming with the guidance of government and public health officials. One program born of this ever-evolving situation is our Emergency Foster Care program and the response from the community has been extraordinary. In the first four days following our call-out, Hawaiian Humane’s foster care team successfully placed more than 200 animals in the care of warm and loving homes across the island! We even had donors visiting from a California shelter generously cover all adult dog adoptions up to $500. To spread positivity and smiles in a time of uncertainty, here are some photos of those adoptions and our animals in emergency foster care loving their “staycation”!

Hawaiian Humane Society’s foster care program is made up of compassionate volunteers who open their hearts and homes to animals in need of extra TLC, extra time to recuperate from injury, sickness or other conditions. Foster volunteers regularly house, feed, socialize, groom and train animals. They may also administer medicine as needed. Baking a difference The team at Hawaiian Humane Society is inspired daily by kind-hearted individuals who take our mission to heart and find creative ways to support the animals in our care. Tailor Kai, a tenacious 10 year-old with an entrepreneurial spirit, is without a doubt one of these individuals. With the support of her parents and the folks at Ko‘olau Distillery, Tailor took matters into her own hands and started her own sustainable business to help raise funds for animals at Hawaiian Humane Society. Hawaiian Humane Society’s communications manager, Jessica Tronoski, had the pleasure of sitting down with Tailor and her mom, Heather, to talk about her venture and drive to help Oahu’s animals in need. Question: Tell me more about yourself and the business that you have started! Answer: I am 10 years old and I’m in 4th grade at St. Anthony School. Pali Puppy Bites is a great dog treat company where all of our profits go to [Hawaiian Humane Society]! I started Pali Puppy Bites because at the distillery, we needed someone to make something out of the mash, or a way to recycle the mash, and I volunteered to make dog biscuits! We looked up a recipe and now here we are! A (Heather): My husband and I work for Ko‘olau Distillery, Hawaii’s first and only whiskey distillery, and what happens is every time you make a mash, or a new batch of whiskey, you have to separate the hard particulates from the alcohol that you’re going to put in the still. Every time we do a mash, we are left with about 60lbs of what we call “spent grains” and it’s basically food – almost all corn, a little bit of barley – 6 | Hawaiian Humane Society • HawaiianHumane.org
and why throw it away? Some places on the mainland make bread or pizza dough with it, but Tailor loves to bake and she said one day, “why don’t I make dog biscuits?” A: And even if I don’t use it all, sometimes we throw it to the birds or to the pigs that live near the distillery, so it’s just going back to the environment and not going to the trash at all! Q: What has been your favorite part about starting Pali Puppy Bites? A: There are so many parts that I love about it! Helping the animals, baking and this being my job! I also love shopping for donations! I’d say my favorite favorite part out of all of it though, is seeing a picture of a dog
with the treat or seeing a dog eat it and enjoy it and want more. That is probably my favorite part. Q: What is your favorite thing to shop for when shopping for donations with the funds you raise? A: The huge big bags of pet food that are bigger than me! They’re so fun to shop for! Q: Do you and your family have any pets of your own? A: Yes! I have one cat and one fish, and right now I’m hoping to get another cat because my other one died. I’m excited to meet the cats [at Hawaiian Humane Society]! Q: What have you learned from starting Pali Puppy Bites and becoming an entrepreneur at such a young age? A: I have learned that it’s not all fun and games! You can’t mix it and then put it away and relax and do nothing. You actually have to work for it – you have to work really hard! You gotta put it in the bags, you gotta put the product out there!
Q: What do you envision for the future of Pali Puppy Bites? A: I want to try to make Pali Puppy Bites go global, or national, and make Pali Puppy Bites famous! I just want to help those adorable animals as much as I can! Q: What would you like to be when you grow up? A: I want to be maybe a teacher, or an actor or a writer when I grow up. And maybe a baking show judge! A variety of Pali Puppy Bites are available in exchange for a donation at Ko‘olau Distillery in Kailua. Once a large enough sum of funds is raised, Tailor shared that her and her mom venture out on a fun-filled shopping spree for donations at Petco Kaneohe, and then directly donate all purchased goods to
Hawaiian Humane. Heather noted that Tailor has raised funds for over $1,300 in supplies since the start of Pali Puppy Bites in May 2019 – all of which have been donated to Hawaiian Humane Society! Thanks to Hawaii’s tourism market, dogs around the world have been able to enjoy made-in-Hawaii “omiyage” treats from Pali Puppy Bites. Tailor has received rave reviews from dogs in places like Japan, France and California by way of photos and thank you notes on social media. While Tailor’s parents initially gave her the option to keep the profits and save for something she wanted for herself, Tailor’s heart was set on helping Oahu’s homeless animals from the very start. Hawaiian Humane Society’s animals (and humans) thank Tailor for her ingenuity, generosity and incredibly big heart! Spring brings kitten season During the few months of cooler weather in Hawaii, Hawaiian Humane’s cat houses are a little quieter than usual. But as the days lengthen and begin to warm, the kitten rooms suddenly begin to fill. This heralds the beginning of kitten season, the time from late spring to early fall when unsterilized cats seek each other out and begin to produce litters. The majority of our kittens begin their lives homeless on the street and are born to free-roaming or marginally-owned mothers. A life begun on the streets is challenging from the moment the kittens are born. Illness, traffic, weather, humans (well-meaning and not) and other animals take their toll and often cause undue suffering. We all know this instinctively, and the desire to help often makes kind-hearted people sweep up found litters and bring them to the nearest animal shelter or rescue organization. Somewhat counterintuitively however, this is most often not the best approach. Here’s why: very young
kittens need their mothers. This is especially true of those that are still nursing. Removing them from the care of their mothers can lead to very rapid decline. Mother cats regularly wander away from their kittens. They may be off in search of food, a new shelter, to relieve themselves or even to take a quick break. However, it’s more than likely that they will return. This fact requires wouldbe rescuers to take a patient and nuanced approach. Unless there is immediate danger, it’s best to resist separating babies from their mothers. Instead, monitor the area quietly and cautiously by checking in every few hours. If kittens look distressed, meow loudly, breathe with their mouths open or the mother cat has not returned in over eight hours, they do need help, and this is the time to intervene. But saving kitten lives doesn’t end there. Animal shelters and veterinary clinics often do not

have the capacity to provide the intensive care required for the significant influx of kittens during kitten season. Unweaned kittens need to be fed every 2-5 hours depending on age, kept isolated due to weakened immune systems, kept warm and typically require manual stimulation to urinate/ defecate. Your help is needed to see this intervention through. Depending on the age of the kittens, they may require regular round-the-clock feeding and care. It sounds like a lot of work, but a family working together can give kittens in their care a chance at a bright future. Once the kittens are eating solid food, they can be brought into a shelter or to a cat rescue group for further fostering, spay/neuter and eventual adoption. The team at Hawaiian Humane is committed to giving kittens the chance to find their own families. And because the numbers of needy kittens is so great during kitten season, help from the community is vital. If you’ve found kittens in need and want to be part of this life-saving effort, visit Hawaiian Humane’s Admissions department. They have prepared special kitten kits filled with items needed to nurture young and unweaned kittens successfully. They include kitten milk replacement and nursing bottles. Kitten caretakers receive these kits at no cost along with information on how to care for the kittens for the few weeks it takes for them to get strong, healthy and ready for the next steps in their journey to adoption. What does Bill 59 mean for Oahu’s pet owners? The Hawaiian Humane Society strongly supported City Council Bill 59 which reflected the first significant update to our animal welfare laws since 1983. The City Council unanimously passed the bill and Mayor Caldwell signed it into law this past February. The provisions will take effect on July 1, 2020. A key provision of the update was to mandate microchipping for Oahu’s pet cats and dogs. Currently, dogs are required to be licensed on Oahu, but compliance is incredibly low. Here’s why microchipping is a vast improvement over current licensing requirements: • Expected significant increase in return-to-owner rates (RTO). Mainland jurisdictions that have switched from license tags to mandatory microchipping have seen increases in compliance and return-to-owner rates. Dallas, for example, saw its RTO rate increase by 300% over three years after switching to mandatory microchipping. • While tags can be lost, microchips are permanent. • Tags must be renewed every two years at fees ranging from $10 to $28.50. Implanting a microchip is a one-time expense of $25 or less.
Pet owners can have their microchips implanted at any veterinary clinic or animal welfare nonprofit organization and those chips can be from any manufacturer. Most microchip manufacturers offer a free option for registering and updating microchip information and www.foundanimals.org will register any microchip for free. There should be no cost barrier to keeping a pet owner’s contact information current. Hawaiian Humane is conducting a robust campaign to inform the public of the microchip requirement and the benefits of microchipping pets. This includes hosting or sponsoring several free or subsidized microchip events in the months leading up July 1. This allows us to share information with the public through multiple channels, including extensive media coverage. We are reminding the public of the need to keep their contact information current with the microchip manufacturer. This is critical to ensure your pet gets reunited with you should they become lost. The Humane Society and other animal rescue organizations reunite thousands of animals with their owners each year thanks to microchips. We are confident that this new law will lead to many more reunions and we are so grateful to everyone who helped support this change.

Donor s potlight Patty and George Kuheana pay it forward If you want to know what pure joy feels like – just ask Patty and George Kuheana. Patty and George are smitten with the newest addition to their ‘ohana, Lono, a “fearless” 4-month old kitten. Lono was adopted during Hawaiian Humane’s February 8th adoption event sponsored by Recovery Law Center. According to Patty, Lono is making himself right at home and getting used to what he can get away with as he learns ‘how to cat’ from his older brother, Manu. This is the fourth cat that the Kuheanas have adopted from the Hawaiian Humane Society. Manu, adopted in 2013, has gone from reluctantly accepting his little brother to patiently waiting for him to wake up so they could play. When speaking to Elizabeth Gromko, Hawaiian Humane’s new manager of annual giving, Patty described Lono as brave and sweet, and she mentioned that he is a perfect fit for their family. “We are so happy with our new fur baby and keep asking ourselves, ‘what took us so long?’”, said Patty. The Kuheanas, who are both retirees, had forgotten how high-spirited a kitten can be, and are enjoying Lono’s antics. “We are so blessed,” said Patty. “We also decided to become monthly donors, because you have to pay
it forward.” The Kuheanas also shared how grateful they are for the services the Hawaiian Humane Society provides to the community. Patty said her “adoption experience was wonderful” and that she was greatly impressed by the professionalism of the Hawaiian Humane Society adoption staff. She also shared her unwavering appreciation for all the work being done to rescue, reunite and rehabilitate animals here on Oahu. “I just love the Hawaiian Humane Society. [They] do an outstanding job!”

Each year, the contest raises funds for over 30 programs and services provided by the Hawaiian Humane Society. Striving for stronger animal welfare laws for Hawaii Most animal cruelty takes place out of plain sight. First-hand witnesses may also be victims of abuse who fear reporting on their abuser. Independent observers can play a critical part in bringing these crimes to light. Veterinarians, in particular, have a powerful role to play. As respected experts, veterinarians are uniquely qualified both to identify suspected abuse and to serve as credible witnesses. And they take this responsibility seriously. Two years ago, the Hawaiian Humane Society received a report of suspected animal cruelty from Oahu’s Veterinary Emergency and Referral Center. A 4-yearold, six pound terrier had come in with a succession of serious injuries over a period of about a year and a half. After an investigation and prosecution, the owner’s boyfriend, Steven Boos, was convicted of animal cruelty and is serving a one-year jail sentence. Sadly, the investigation also revealed that the same pet owner had lost four other young dogs under suspicious circumstances. In each case a different veterinarian was used and no suspicion of abuse was reported. Many states provide veterinarians with immunity from civil liability for reporting suspected animal abuse. Hawaii does not, but that may soon change. A veterinary “Good Samaritan” and mandatory reporting
measure, Senate Bill 2985, is moving forward at the Legislature this year with the backing of the Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association. It is one of four measures supported by the Hawaiian Humane Society that would improve protections for animals. The other three include the following: SB2718 would amend the Penal Code to establish the crime of sexual assault of an animal. It would also provide that the sexual assault of an animal is a class C felony or a class B felony if the offense subjects a minor to sexual contact with an animal or is committed in the presence of a minor. Hawaii is one of just four states that do not prohibit bestiality. Appallingly, there is ample evidence in online bestiality forums and apps that this kind of abuse occurs in Hawaii and that people travel to our state to participate in this abhorrent practice. SB677, SD1, would prohibit specified trolleys, pulleys, cables, or running lines designed to attach a dog to two stationary objects in a configuration that endangers the dog, including by depriving the dog of sustenance. It also prohibits the unsupervised tethering of a dog under the age of six months. This is an issue we have been working to address for years and the provisions in this bill are meaningful and enforceable. SB2512, SD1 would prohibit the owner of an animal, and the owner's employees, from performing any surgical procedure, including but not limited to surgical birth, ear cropping, tail docking, and debarking on the animal without being licensed as a veterinarian. Hawaiian Humane regularly sees animals who have suffered serious complications as a result of this kind of mutilation. Smudge’s Fund saves lives In October 2019, feline advocate and long-time Hawaiian Humane Society supporter and volunteer, Karen Scharff, opened “Smudge’s Fund” – a special fund named after her beloved cat Smudge and
dedicated to providing specialty and veterinary care to adoptable cats at Hawaiian Humane. “We’ve had Max’s Fund for dogs for over a decade,” Karen realized. “I felt it was time to have something for cats too.” With this fund, chief veterinarian Dr. Kasey Carter and his team can provide outsourced medical treatment from local veterinary clinics. “We’ve already used Smudge’s fund to help several cats in need since it opened in October,” said Dr. Carter. “This is setting them up on a successful path towards adoptions and we couldn’t be more thrilled!”

As a licensed cat behavior specialist and trainer, Karen has served as volunteer lead of the Hawaiian Humane’s cat houses for the past 17 years. “There’s so much
to learn about cats and trying to figure them out,” Karen said with a glowing smile. “It’s always a victory when I can get a scared cat to come out of their shell!” As a parent of eight cats adopted from the Hawaiian Humane Society, Karen hopes that more cats will find the right care, and eventually the right family, through the help of Smudge’s Fund. Donations to Smudge’s Fund will also be matched up to $10,000 thanks to Karen’s generosity and love for our feline friends. WAGGIN’ TALES Back in December, the Hawaii Association of Insurance Professionals (HAIP) chose the Hawaiian Humane Society as the benefactor of their 2020 Community Service Project. Insurance companies across Oahu gathered critical supplies and donations to support homeless animals in our local community. Through this effort, HAIP members raised over $4,500 in monetary donations and three vans full of food and supplies for the Hawaiian Humane Society’s pet food bank. Paw Prints | 17

Back to the future As we look to the future and continue to build a better and more progressive shelter for Oahu’s animals, we remain rooted in the same core values and mission that Hawaiian Humane Society was founded upon in 1883. Our mission to promote the human-animal bond and the humane treatment of all animals will forever be at the heart of everything we do. In the spirit of staying true to our roots in the midst of positive change and innovation, we present to you Hawaiian Humane’s new (yet familiar) Paw Prints – a “back to the future” moment of sorts. With an updated and modernized look and feel, but a familiar name inspired by a handtyped Hawaiian Humane Society archival newsletter from 1946, we are honoring our roots while growing taller and stronger than ever before.
