Surgery for Snow means he can land on four legs A young gray and white striped tabby named Snow was brought to the Hawaiian Humane Society by his owners who were leaving the island and unable to take him along. The Society’s veterinary staff noticed that the six-month-old kitten could not bear weight on his right hind leg. Lacking the proper equipment to capture an X-ray image, Hawaiian Humane reached out to Windward Community College veterinary technicians for help. The X-rays showed that Snow had a fracture on his rear thigh bone.
Because quality of life can decrease substantially for a cat that cannot use all four limbs, the Society decided to perform a procedure that would remove the fractured piece of Snow’s hip joint. This way, he could enjoy the best quality of life without pain from his broken hip and have the flexibility in his leg as if it had not been injured. Just two days after being X-rayed, Snow underwent a successful surgery at the Society’s veterinary clinic. Then, it was off to foster care and Snow, now physical therapy named Waffles, enjoys the easy for the young life with his new feline. After six family, the Sholars. weeks, Snow was back on his feet with just a mild limp. On January 3, Snow was ready for a new home. Within a few hours of being made available for adoption, he was welcomed into the Sholar family and renamed Waffles. “Waffles was curious and came
up to us when we visited him at the Hawaiian Humane Society. He seemed to generally like people – a definite plus,” said Cristin Sholar. “We were originally looking for an older cat, but his sweet disposition won us over.” The lucky cat with a new leg on life has fit right in with the Sholar family and especially loves his new human baby brother. “Waffles has been excellent. He’s surprisingly well-socialized for a young cat, even understanding verbal cues to back up or leave something alone,” said Sholar. “The first day or two he had a slight limp, but not since then. We have hardwood floors so his hind leg often slips out from under him when he’s cornering hard, but it doesn’t faze him. He’s a very confident cat.”

As I step into the role of President and CEO of the Hawaiian Humane Society, I draw inspiration both from our rich and steadfast history and our commitment to innovation in shelter management. Our royal founding and legacy of local leaders sets the Society’s people and the work they do apart from any other organization. Our commitment to the Society’s mission can be seen around our campus, which was recently redesigned to provide a more comfortable environment for the animals in our care and in the soon-to-open high-quality, high-volume spay neuter center, which
will be a first for the state. Our staff members are experts in their fields including shelter veterinary medicine, animal care, adoptions and more. An abandoned puppy finds justice Nacho, a puppy who was found abandoned in a dumpster, not once, but twice, has found justice. Allyson Ming, who was charged with animal abandonment, pleaded guilty on February 12. Security footage from the apartment complex captured Ming callously tossing Nacho into a dumpster. She was fined $500.

The Society’s humane investigators regularly show appreciation for that bond, as well as compassion for fellow human beings, by reaching out to homeless pet owners.
Over the course of four visits to the Nimitz Viaduct, the Hawaiian Humane Society staff welcomed more than 30 dogs. Many were surrendered by owners who felt they could no longer care for their animals or had too many pets and wanted to find them new homes. Others were found as strays.
“Our mission is to keep pets and people together, if possible. As the end of 2017 drew near, the Society team was notified that the State of Hawaii would begin clearing the homeless encampments beneath the Nimitz Viaduct. Residents who had lived there for years had to make plans to move. In the weeks leading up to the state’s enforcement, Society representatives visited encampments to provide education and options to those caring for pets. When the state began their efforts to clear the area, Hawaiian Humane’s team was on-site to offer various services to pet owners. More than 10 Society staff members visited with homeless residents and distributed collars, leashes and more than 300 pounds of pet food. In addition, Hawaiian Humane provided waived-fee spay/neuter certificates to those with pets who weren’t sterilized.

Heading out to West Oahu After years of research, planning and fundraising, the Hawaiian Humane Society is moving closer to meeting the need for animalThe Society’s related services in West Oahu. The design phase of the Hawaiian Humane Society’s West Oahu campus is nearing completion and construction is slated to begin next year.
Waianae rescue dog touched Boyle family Editor’s Note: Sayeh touched the lives of the Boyle family in the short time he was with them. Below is a tribute from his family of the love they had for him. Sayeh was saved during the 2016 Waianae rescue and joined our home from the Hawaiian Humane Society in February 2017. Poor conditions had taken a toll on his health, and he needed a loving
and nurturing home that had likely been absent for most or all of his life. We did our best to give him that home. Only with us for nine months, he gave us more than we could possibly give him.
Sayeh lived with the Boyle family for just a short time, but touched their lives greatly.
Farsi for “Shadow,” Sayeh followed his fur brother Reza wherever he went. A lover of bones and clean folded socks, he had a mischievous streak that never failed to make us laugh. Sayeh was a gentle soul with a look in his eyes that communicated love, affection and an uncommon empathy. He demonstrated grace and dignity on a daily basis. Unfortunately, Sayeh passed away last November after seven years of life. Sayeh, we miss you deeply and ineffably, and we will see you when we get to wherever it is that you are. You will never be forgotten and you will always be loved. – James Boyle

Bringing families and pets together, islandwide Every weekend, the Hawaiian Humane Society hosts adoption events at various Petco and PetSmart stores. The off-site events provide families from across the island a chance to meet and adopt dogs brought from the Society’s Moiliili campus. Petco and the Society have been partners for 10 years and PetSmart has hosted adoption events since they opened on Oahu in 2013. Thanks to these partnerships, thousands of animals have found new homes. “Petco believes in a ‘Think Adoption First’ philosophy, which means we encourage anyone looking to add a new pet to their family to consider adopting a homeless animal, rather than purchasing one,” said Sean Hartigan, Petco Kaneohe store leader. “Our partnership with the Hawaiian Humane Society is invaluable.” It’s not just dogs that benefit from this partnership. Cats, guinea pigs and
rabbits have all found families through off-site adoption partners.

“We’re lucky to have these partners who are so supportive of finding families for homeless pets,” said Valerie Palumbo, adoptions manager for Hawaiian Humane. “Cats have temporary homes at Petco stores islandwide. By providing in-store housing, these animals are able to meet potential families who aren’t able to make the drive into Moiliili.”
Petco and PetSmart are both committed to helping animals available for adoption find homes and this has played a vital role in
making Hawaii a better place for both people and animals. “The positive effects on the health and welfare of the pet parents is immeasurable,” said Hartigan. “Healthier pets, happier people, better world!”

That was just the beginning of their special relationship with the Society. In June 2017, Youth and Nani returned as pet visitation volunteers. Nani now spreads the joy of the human-animal bond at various health care organizations on Oahu, including the Queen’s Medical Center West Oahu and the Special Education Center of Hawaii’s Waipahu Community Center.
Youth decided to make a visit to the Society after seeing Nani’s picture on Hawaiian Humane’s website. It was love at first sight and she decided to adopt Nani. The video of their send-off went viral.
“Nani has made it possible for us to do more volunteer work,” says Youth. “People don’t choose to be there, in those circumstances. So, if we can be a way to just bring a smile that is so nice.”

Taking heartworm to heart Heartworm is a preventable, but potentially fatal, parasite that primarily infects dogs.
Mosquitoes that bite an animal infected with heartworm will then become a carrier, causing the cycle of infection to repeat itself.
“All dogs welcomed at the Hawaiian Humane Society are tested for heartworm disease,” said Lisa Fowler, President and CEO of the Society. “Dogs who test positive are made available for adoption and are provided with a course of antibiotics to prepare them for eventual treatment. Once they find their new families they are then treated for the infection at no cost to the owner.”
Because of the seriousness of the disease and the prevalence of mosquitoes in Hawaii, heartworm prevention is highly recommended for all cats and dogs, but it is especially important to those who venture outdoors. All pets should be tested annually. What are some signs of heartworm? If your dog has recently been infected with heartworm, he may show no symptoms until the worms have moved to and developed in the lungs. As the disease progresses, your dog may become lethargic, have difficulty breathing, begin coughing or lose his appetite.
How does an animal contract heartworm? Heartworm is transmitted exclusively by mosquitoes that are carriers of the disease. Once an animal is bitten by a mosquito that is harboring heartworm, the infection is released into the animal’s bloodstream.
Signs of possible heartworm disease in cats include coughing, respiratory distress, vomiting, lack of appetite, fainting, seizures or fluid buildup in the abdomen. There is no approved drug to treat heartworm disease in cats, although symptoms may be managed with medications. Surgical removal of heartworm is risky and can lead to serious complications, such as shock and potential death. How do you manage heartworm? If your dog tests positive for heartworm, be sure to follow all treatment plans your pet’s veterinarian has given. A special bond on a special day The Hawaiian Humane Society’s Pet Visitation program began over twenty years ago with pet-people teams spreading joy to hospitals, hospice and schools island wide. One pup in particular named Lulu has been with the Society since 2016. As a volunteer Pet Visitation dog, Lulu offers countless kisses, wags and cuddles to the residents of Dignity Senior Living at Oceanside in Hauula. During her frequent visits with owner and Hawaiian Humane board member Elizabeth Rice Grossman, Lulu developed a special relationship with residents Dorian and Marsha. Kitten influx means more help needed The days are getting longer and the nights shorter, which can only mean one thing: it’s kitten season. Although kittens are born year round in Hawaii due to our long days, birth rates peak from late spring to early fall, when there are even more daylight hours and cats have more time to mate. During this time, the Hawaiian Humane Society receives an influx of kittens. Here are some ways the community can help:

Waggin’ Tales A grand opportunity Tails are wagging for PetVet Animal Hospital. Seven canines found new homes at their December grand opening event.

A Paw-ina for pets Three woofs to Nanakuli High School for hosting a paw-ina on their campus. Students learned about animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. A holiday filled with woofs and purrs Mew-halo to the staff at Wilson Okamoto Corporation for dedicating their holidays to the animals. The spirited group raised funds by hosting yappy hour, bake sales and more. Nineteen employees also stopped by campus to help clean the cat and dog houses and walk dogs.
Love is in the air Thank you to DFS Group and the Single Marine & Sailors Club for helping so many families find the love of their lives at Doggie Speed Dating. Got a picture perfect pet? Have a pet who loves the limelight? Grab a camera and start snapping those photos because the Pets in Paradise Calendar contest is on its way this summer. Beginning in June, the 2019 search will be on for great shots of pets in paradise. All pets are welcome in the Hawaiian Humane Society’s calendar contest for a $25 donation per photo entry. The winners will be selected by popular vote in the “People’s Choice” category and by a panel in the “Judge’s Choice” category.
