Adoption strengthens the family bond Nearly 8,000 animals found a family to call their own through the Hawaiian Humane Society’s adoptions program from July 2013 through June 2014. Matchmaking is a labor of love for the Society’s nine adoptions advisors who run a 7-daya-week center and lead more than 400 adoption events islandwide every year. The variety of animals that the Society offers includes cats, dogs, turtles, birds, rabbits, mice and more. And each animal comes with his own colorful story such as the incredibly talented homing pigeon who kept flying back to the shelter after he was adopted. The majority of animals adopted are dogs – 4,200 to be exact in the last fiscal year. The heartwarming story of the Sills family is an example of the many ways that adoption strengthens families. Dogs Peanut and Gypsy of the Sills family are rascals and the best of friends, though only knowing each
other for a couple of months now. Before Gypsy, the Sills family had adopted Trixster from the Humane Society. “What really made him special is that he would give hugs and just loved all dogs and people,” said Kathy Sills. “He was Peanut’s closest friend.” Unfortunately, last year, Trixster passed away. Trixster’s passing still brings Kathy and her son to tears. Peanut also took the loss hard. The Sills knew they wanted to bring another dog into their family, especially as a companion for Peanut. It took them more than a year to find Gypsy, who caught Kathy’s eye during one of her frequent visits to the Humane Society. The Sills instantly fell in love. Adopting Gypsy has made everyone happier. “Since we’ve had Gypsy, Peanut’s health and eating has improved and he’s more active,” Sills said.

About 12 percent of Oahu’s people got their most recent pet from the Humane Society. “We offer such a wide variety of healthy, loving animals who need nothing more than to share your life and bring you unconditional love,” Croegaert said. “We hope the community will think first about all the wonderful animals here when considering where to get their next pet.”

The Hawaiian Humane Society is an education and advocacy organization that shelters, protects, rescues, reunites and rehomes animals. It is Oahu’s only open-admission shelter that welcomes all animals. Established in 1883, this non-profit organization is not a chapter of any group as there is no national humane society. Keep your cats safe by keeping them indoors Many well-intentioned cat owners believe they are respecting their feline companions’ freedom by letting them roam throughout the neighborhood. Indoor-only cats often have longer, healthier and happier lives. According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners, veterinarians are encouraged to educate clients and the public about how dangerous the outdoors can be for cats. The organization cites the following: vehicles, attacks from other animals, cruelty and poisons. Still, many cat owners would rather let their felines wander the neighborhood. “It’s a mindset that’s hard to change,” said the Humane Society’s Chief Veterinarian Dr. Aleisha Swartz. “We encourage cat owners to keep their cats indoors as they are less at risk of disease, injury and running away.”
In 2012, a man was sighted driving around the Hawaii Kai Park and Ride shooting cats with a BB gun. The Humane Society offered a $2,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest. Unfortunately, no one was ever caught.
Cats can also contract a variety of illnesses from other felines when outside, such as leukemia, AIDS, distemper, and upper respiratory infections. They can also acquire parasites, such as fleas, ticks, ear mites and intestinal worms. Unfortunately, the greatest danger to outdoor and free-roaming cats may come from people.
With all these potential dangers, it is not surprising that indoor cats have a much longer life span. Data on cats who live both indoors and outdoors is harder to come by, but some veterinarians believe an indoor-only cat will live on average twice as long as a free roaming, indoor-outdoor cat.
“We’ve been involved in numerous issues in which outdoor cats are in danger,” said Jacque Vaughn, Hawaiian Humane Society’s community relations director. She lists random shootings as well as landowners who trap and euthanize stray cats. “In all of these cases, no efforts were made to reunite pet cats with their owners. Many freeroaming cats are not feral. They belong to someone.”
Some people believe that they are depriving their cats or being cruel by not letting them outside. Yet indoor-only cats can have extremely happy and healthy lives. There are several ways to make indoor existence fun and stimulating including the use of cat trees, window cots and cat shelves that provide the vertical experiences that cats love. Catteries are enclosed lanais that create indoor spaces out of the outdoors. Simply providing plenty of comfortable places for your cat to lounge and look at the world along with a few scratching posts, toys and ample playtime can create an environment in which your cat won’t even be interested in venturing outdoors.
In a couple of cases this year, the Society was made aware of community associations that trap outdoor cats and abandon them to another area of the island. This practice is inhumane, fails to reunite pets with their owners and is illegal. “Abandonment is a crime,” says Jocelyn Bouchard, Humane Society’s director of operations who oversees cruelty and investigations. “It is illegal to relocate animals with no intent to come back for them.”

Senior pets need special accommodations Suffering isn’t easy for caregivers to recognize and arthritis is one of the most common problems for dogs and cats as they age. Those achy bones can mean auwe when pets are picked up or cuddled. And there comes a time for all cats and dogs when that leap to your bed no longer looks like a hop from the Energizer bunny.

Waggin’ Tales Celebration of a Dog’s Life A special thanks to Malay Kimura for hosting a fundraiser at Da Smokehouse Waikiki, in honor of her dog Bourbon, who suffers from epilepsy. The fundraiser raised more than $1,100 to help orphaned animals. Ruff Ryders Mahalo to the Hawaii Ruff Ryders Oahu Chapter, which donated 900 pounds of pet food to the Humane Society. A Sweet Treat More animals were able to find homes thanks to A Cake Life, which donated cupcakes and treats to all adopters on Wednesdays in October.
Oceanic Gives Back Mahalo to Oceanic Time Warner Cable employees who collected $4,575 in donations from their friends and families for PetWalk and volunteered at the shelter.
Toys and Joys Animal clinics and local businesses across Oahu collected toys for orphaned animals and made their holidays merry and bright.

petco is a best friend to the animals Since its 2008 debut in Hawaii, petco has become a best friend to the animals in a variety of ways. With the recent addition of petco Waikele in October 2014, there are now seven Oahu locations in which the Society’s cats or dogs are offered for adoption. The Humane Society is home to only 26 adoption kennels and a Cat House that can comfortably hold 45 felines. Yet, every day there are more than

and providing them with fresh food and water. 100 animals available for adoption including birds, rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles and more. Space matters for an openadmission shelter that does not turn any animal away. Petco has expanded the Society’s housing capacity and brought animals closer to neighborhoods islandwide. Humane Society volunteers care for the cats housed at petco, showering them with love and keeping them happy until they are adopted. One of these volunteers is Michelle Bowerman, who spends time each week playing with the cats, cleaning out their kennels, 5
“I live across the street so I love that I can make a difference on a weekly basis right by home,” said Bowerman, who visits the cats at petco Hawaii Kai every Thursday and enjoys keeping the cats socialized to help get them ready for their new families. “We have dozens of cats every day out at the petco locations, and are in need of more volunteers to help care and spend some quality time with them,” said Marielle Terbio, volunteer outreach coordinator for the Hawaiian Humane Society. “It’s the perfect opportunity to volunteer with us even if you don’t live near our shelter.” Petco cares about the welfare and treatment of animals nationwide through the company’s Independent Animal Care Advisory Council. Six animal experts meet bi-annually to discuss important concerns of the pet industry including regulatory issues, public health concerns and petco’s animal care. Serving as an animal welfare voice on the committee is Pamela Burns, president and CEO of the Hawaiian Humane Society.
Corporate giving supports employee volunteerism Bill Stiles has volunteered at the Hawaiian Humane Society for more than a year with his wife Ellen and participates in Microsoft’s giving program. Stiles’ employer Microsoft matches every monetary donation he makes to the Society, and donates $17 for each hour that he volunteers. “Microsoft is strongly committed to the causes its
employees are passionate about,” said Stiles who volunteers at least twice a week, calling adopters, walking dogs and caring for cats in the Cat House. “Having such great support allows me to double the impact of my contributions.”

As a local nonprofit that receives no funding from any national organization, the Society relies on donations made from the community to run and operate Oahu’s only open-admission shelter. Neuter Now
Sterilized pets live longer and are healthier. They are less likely to develop some cancers of the reproductive organs that are very common. Male cats are not as likely to spray and male dogs are not as likely to mark their territory once neutered. Spaying a female eliminates heat periods – the mess and odor that attract males. Neutered male dogs and cats are less likely to roam and get lost or hurt. Neutered dogs are less likely to bite, and despite all myths and misconceptions, a neutered dog is not less macho. In fact, sterilization has no bearing on your dog’s friendliness, playfulness or personality.

Mahalo to our capital campaign donors The Hawaiian Humane Society is laying the groundwork to transform the lives of more animals than ever imagined. Our capital campaign is providing funding for two projects that will change the lives of animals in our community for many generations to come. Our campus in Moiliili is being redesigned to include a new and innovative veterinary clinic and admissions center that will provide increased housing capacity and upgraded facilities. In addition, we are excited to be in the final stages of identifying a location for our planned second campus in West Oahu.
