Polk County Utilities customers are still required to follow a once-per-week watering schedule to comply with the Modified Phase III “Extreme” water shortage order issued by the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD). Addresses ending in 0 or 1 may only water on Mondays; addresses ending in 2 or 3 may only water on Tuesdays; addresses ending in 4 or 5 may only water on Wednesdays; addresses ending in 6 or 7 may only water on Thursdays; and addresses ending in 8 or 9, along with locations for which an address cannot be determined (such as common areas associated with a subdivision), may only water on Fridays. Watering hours under the new schedule have been modified to: 12:01 a.m. to 8 a.m. or 6 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. Properties less than one acre in size may only water during one of these windows. STORM RECOVERY CHARGE
The Polk County Board of County Commissioners confirmed the appointment of Neal Duncan as the new Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing Division Director on Tuesday, Aug. 4. As the Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing Director, Duncan will oversee a budget of approximately $42.7 million, 32 employees, and Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing Division’s daily operations. “I am incredibly honored and humbled by the confidence County Manager Bill Beasley and the Board of County Commissioners have placed in me,” said Neal Duncan. Duncan joined the Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing Division in 2006 as the Senior Business Development Manager, where he led the division’s corporate sponsorship program, cultivated strategic partnerships, and supported destination marketing initiatives. In 2019, he stepped into a new role serving as the division’s Senior Sales and Events Manager, where he led the county’s sports tourism program, managed major event recruitment efforts, and coordinated partnerships with national governing bodies and local stakeholders.
Tampa Electric announced that the storm recovery charge on customer bills officially ended in August. Customers will no longer see the storm recovery charge, resulting in bills that are expected to be approximately 11% to 12% lower. Tampa Electric began collecting the storm recovery charge in March of 2025 due to the historic 2024 hurricane season, including Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton. Because those costs are being recovered ahead of schedule, the charge will end early, lowering bills. TECO continues to invest in system reliability and storm resiliency through multiple improvements and upgrades including solar expansion, underground power lines, substation improvements, and grid hardening. Customers who are having trouble managing their energy bills are encouraged to contact Tampa Electric as soon as possible. EAGLE TO PHOENIX CHAPLAIN HECTOR CRUZ Polk County Fire Rescue (PCFR) has lost volunteer Chaplain Hector Cruz in August. Cruz passed away due to injuries sustained during a car crash in the Eagle Lake area. The crash occurred while he was traveling between PCFR stations to check on crews. Cruz has served PCFR since 2023. He was known for his compassion, guidance, and his ability to offer solace whenever someone was going through a difficult situation. “Chaplain Cruz’s influence was felt throughout the department as he had the ability to make a difficult situation easier. This ability is a rare one that not many can master but he was one of the few who did,” said Fire Chief Shawn Smith. “Such sudden tragedy is never easy, but it is especially difficult when it is one of our own. My heart goes out to Hector’s family, friends and colleagues as they navigate this trying time.”
POLK STATE DEAN SYLVESTER LITTLE REMEMBERED Sylvester Little served Polk State College for more than half of the College’s history. Despite being retired for more than five years, his impact on Polk State was felt by many. Little passed away on Aug. 11 at the age of 69. During his time at Polk State from 1987 through 2020, Little served several roles, from his early days in the classroom to retiring as Dean of Student Services. An advocate for students, he was heavily involved with the Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search programs as well as the STEM Club. Little also co-advised the Cultural Academic Vocational Experience (CAVE) Club. “Dean Little’s impact on Polk State College is woven into the very fabric of our institution,” said Polk State President Anastasios Kamoutsas. “For more than three decades, he dedicated himself to students and to helping them see what is possible through education. His service has undoubtedly left a lasting legacy.”

Polk State College and Florida Polytechnic University have entered into an articulation agreement, establishing the Eagle to Phoenix Pathway program for students. Polk State President Anastasios Kamoutsas and Florida Poly President Devin Stephenson signed the agreement on Thursday, July 30, at the university’s campus, strengthening the partnership between the institutions and expanding opportunities for students. Under the agreement, Polk State students can complete their Associate in Arts (AA) degree and all required prerequisites on the college’s campuses before seamlessly transferring to one of 10 targeted bachelor’s degree programs at Florida Poly – the state’s only public university exclusively dedicated to STEM. The agreement builds on a 2019 partnership that created a transfer pathway to only one Florida Poly bachelor’s degree. Students will now be able to transfer into one of 10 bachelor’s programs.
CONGRATS GRADS! The Polk County Public Schools’ Class of 2026 celebration continues! Over the summer, families gathered at Auburndale High for Polk County Public Schools’ annual summer commencement ceremony. The event recognized seniors from across the district who have worked hard during the summer to fulfill missing requirements for graduation; more than 60 students qualified this year.
