Virginia offers properties in a remarkable range of settings, from homes high in the Blue Ridge Mountains to lakefront properties, historic Shenandoah Valley neighborhoods, and a narrow stretch of coast between the ocean and Back Bay. These five places are especially notable for how closely the scenery is tied to daily life. 1. Charlottesville and Albemarle County Drive west from Charlottesville and the city quickly gives way to farms, orchards, vineyards, and the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Around Crozet and Greenwood, open fields frequently open toward the mountains, while winding country roads connect small communities throughout western Albemarle. Properties with substantial land or unobstructed views tend to be among the more expensive options in the area. Closer to Charlottesville, buyers can find historic neighborhoods and a more urban setting, while newer homes continue to appear around Crozet and larger rural properties remain common farther west. 2. Smith Mountain Lake Smith Mountain Lake is shaped by hundreds of miles of shoreline, with wooded coves and long points extending into broad stretches of open water. From many parts of the lake, the Blue Ridge Mountains rise in the distance, creating views that change considerably depending on the angle of the shoreline. Private docks are a defining feature of many waterfront homes, and properties directly on the lake are typically among the most expensive. Buyers can also find condos and townhomes in resort communities, detached homes farther inland, and properties that trade direct water access for more approachable prices.
3. Wintergreen At Wintergreen, the homes are built into the Blue Ridge Mountains themselves. The 11,000-acre resort climbs the mountains’ eastern slopes, with residences surrounded by hardwood forest, streams, and steep terrain. Higher on the mountain, homes can present views that stretch across valleys and successive ridgelines, while other properties overlook golf courses, ski slopes, or dense woods. Prices vary widely depending on location and view, and the options range from smaller condominiums to detached mountain homes. 4. Staunton In Staunton, the scenery comes as much from the city itself as from the mountains around it. Hilly streets run through six National Register-listed historic districts, where 19th- and early-20th-century buildings rise above downtown and the Shenandoah Valley spreads out beyond them. Some of the city’s most recognizable homes are found in historic neighborhoods such as Newtown and Gospel Hill. Newer residences are more common toward the southern part of Staunton, and prices are generally lower than in Virginia’s better-known resort and waterfront destinations. 5. Sandbridge Sandbridge occupies a narrow strip at the southern end of Virginia Beach, with the ocean on one side and Back Bay on the other. Its 4.5 miles of beach are lined with dunes and sea oats, while farther south, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park preserve marshes, wooded coastal areas, and long stretches of undeveloped shoreline. Detached beach houses dominate much of Sandbridge, alongside several condo communities. Oceanfront and waterfront properties sit at the upper end of the market, and many homes in the area are also used as vacation rentals.
