Oceanfront architecture at The Sea Ranch

36690 Mariners Dr, The Sea Ranch, CA 95497, UBL 18-101

“The Burdick House draws advantage from its position without commanding it and comfortably takes its place in the landscape. Almost iconic in its formal simplicity, it is compactly and efficiently planned, adroitly sited, and filled with the elegance of orderly, intelligent craft, which its owners and creators, industrial designers, habitually bring to their work and lives” as stated by Donlyn Lyndon, FAIA, in the now iconic coffee table book on Sea Ranch Architecture from 2004. Donlyn Lyndon is one of the original, early Sea Ranch architects, who set the tone for 60-years of excellence. Bruce & Susan Burdick designed and built this home in 1990 as a retreat

from a busy work life in San Francisco. The house entertains very well with welcoming public spaces inside and outside. The ocean facing deck, almost the length of the house, takes in the drama of Smugglers Cove and crashing waves. Inside three sliding doors, one finds cozy and practical spaces including a large office, which doubles as a guest room, an inviting library with fireplace, office and full bath for guests. Upstairs is the primary bedroom, full bath, and a retreat for napping, reading or overflow guests. A courtyard gives fenced-in privacy and the one-car garage with laundry holds all you need. This is a must visit house.

The San Francisco Art Fair Brings

85 Galleries to Fort Mason This April

The San Francisco Art Fair is a standout event on the city’s spring calendar, set for April 16–19 at Fort Mason’s Festival Pavilion. The weekend opens Thursday with preview events and an opening-night window, then shifts into public days Friday through Sunday. Some visitors treat it like an hour-long circuit before dinner; others settle in for an unhurried afternoon, letting the range of work reveal itself over a couple of passes. The waterfront Festival Pavilion has enough space to keep the energy moving, but it still feels contained—you’re never far from the next surprise, the next conversation, or the booth you want to revisit once you’ve seen the full room. While not at the fair, you can lean into the neighborhood’s easiest pleasures. Pair the fair with a walk at Crissy Field or along the Marina Green, then head into the pavilion for an afternoon lap. Afterward, keep it simple: dinner on Chestnut Street or in the Fillmore corridor, then a slower second day with coffee, a return visit to your favorite booths, and a last look at the waterfront before you call it.

Testimonials

We discovered Design Matters and were impressed by the immense amount of value, knowledge, and expertise that they added to our project. We started engaging with Design Matters later in our process and wished we would have engaged much earlier with their team, ideally at the same stage as with the Architect and Builder. Julie and the Design Matters team reorganized the home layout for better function and flow, while guiding us on material selections. They provided industry expertise related to project oversight, project management, coordination with building professionals, detailed specification reviews, and installation support for the sub-contractors. Julie’s passion for her craft and her profession is contagious. It was a lot of work, but she did it with full charge enthusiasm and made it a worthwhile and fun process for us as well! I would recommend Design Matters without any hesitation. — Shelton J.

Brilliant Interior Design by Julie Cavanaugh and the Design Matters team. Now working with Julie on our THIRD remodel project! Julie is excellent in the early phase with spatial planning, often recommending small changes that yield big benefits in the flow and efficiency of the house. She has an unparalleled design aesthetic that creates rooms and color palettes that are unique and beautiful. She uses a variety of materials and textures, and great cabinetry design. Very distinctive work that always gets a “WOW” from guests. And to top it off, she and the team are very fun to work with! - M&G
