Discover how Belgian contemporary artist Berlinde De Bruyckere creates her captivating artworks in this indispensable guide to her practice.

In the Studio: Berlinde De Bruyckere is an essential companion to the work of the celebrated contemporary artist. Simultaneously deeply personal and powerfully universal, De Bruyckere’s hybrid forms explore the vulnerability of man, the suffering body, and the overwhelming power of nature. This generously illustrated and accessible guide to her practice details the development of De Bruyckere’s work across sculpture, drawing, and installation. Drawing on a vast array of influences—from Christian iconography, the paintings of Lucas Cranach, and Ovid’s Metamorphoses to more contemporary references such as the cinema of Pier Paolo Pasolini and J.M. Coetzee’s writings—she transforms existing imagery into striking new compositions that bring established archetypes into the contemporary moment. With a wealth of illustrations capturing De Bruyckere’s almost alchemical metamorphosis of her materials into articulations of desire and fragility, sensuality and suffering, violence and care, In the Studio: Berlinde De Bruyckere is a comprehensive introduction to the artist’s work.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Working with casts made of wax, animal skins, hair, textiles, metal and wood, Berlinde De Bruyckere (b. 1964) sculpts evocative distortions of organic forms. Drawing from the legacies of the European Old Masters and the Flemish Renaissance, as well as mythology and cultural lore, De Bruyckere layers existing histories with new narratives suggested by current events to create a psychological terrain of pathos, tenderness, and unease.

An inside look at how Paris-based Japanese artist Takesada Matsutani brings matter to life through the masterful manipulation of traditional and unconventional materials.

At the heart of Takesada Matsutani’s practice is the reshaping of matter, transforming vinyl adhesive, acrylic, graphite, and oil paint into mesmerizing works that give life to his materials while challenging the fundamental nature of painting. In this guide to the artist’s life and work, learn about how Matsutani arrived at his first experiments with vinyl glue and his work as part of Japan’s influential Gutai group, his time as a printmaker in Stanley William Hayter’s studio in Paris in the 1960s, and the energetic daily studio practice that he has maintained for decades. A generous selection of archival material, studio photography, and artwork images open a window onto Matsutani’s unique process, while an informative text by curator Mika Yoshitake offers insight into his work across painting, performance, assemblage, installation, and works on paper; his wide-ranging influences, including Buddhist philosophy and Gutai; his halfcentury-long creative and personal dialogue with his wife Kate Van Houten; and the forms and materials that comprise his singular visual language. A comprehensive yet accessible account of the artist’s celebrated career, In the Studio: Takesada Matsutani is an essential resource for those looking to discover or dive further into Matsutani’s distinctive and fearless work.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Over six decades, Takesada Matsutani (b. 1937) has developed a unique visual language of form and materials. As a key member of the influential Gutai Art Association, he experimented with vinyl glue, manipulating the substance with fans and his own breath to create bulbous and sensuous forms reminiscent of human curves and features. In 1966, Matsutani moved to Paris to work at Stanley William Hayter's renowned printmaking studio. He continues to live and work in Paris, pursuing an artistic practice defined by its experimentation with unexpected materials and unusual techniques.

Discover renowned avant-gardist Hans/Jean Arp’s works with and on paper in this expansive survey of the artist’s drawings and collages.

From his early years as part of Zurich Dada until the 1960s, Hans/Jean Arp produced an extraordinary and influential body of work. He is best known for two- and three-dimensional work deploying biomorphic forms that would come to epitomize organic abstraction. This new publication focuses on Arp’s works on paper, as well as his paper collages, providing a comprehensive picture of their role in the artist’s multifaceted output, including as a vehicle for play and as a way of inventing new worlds. Split across five chapters, some two hundred illustrations offer a rich and representative selection of works that have mostly never been reproduced or exhibited publicly before. An intriguing new perspective on the artist’s unique vocabulary of shapes and gestures emerges through the book’s thematic, non-chronological groupings, while illuminating texts by Arie Hartog and Loretta Würtenberger unpack the formal language and artistic resonances of these works, both drawing out their connections to Arp’s iconic sculptural practice and considering his prolific work with and on paper as a fascinating world in itself.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Hans/Jean Arp (1886–1966) is a key figure of so-called classical modernism and was an important contributor to the development of Dada and Surrealism in the early twentieth century. Turning his back on increasingly modernized turn-of-the-century society, Arp created biomorphic works whose organic, amoeboid forms highlighted his fascination with the physiological processes of procreation, growth, and death.

EDITED BY BRIONY FER. TEXT BY BRIONY FER AND JENNY NACHTIGALL.

An absorbing study of Swiss artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp’s influential work, looking in depth at the role of the curve in the artist’s formal lexicon.

Edited and introduced by Briony Fer, Sophie Taeuber-Arp: La règle des courbes / The Rule of Curves examines the work of leading twentieth-century artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp, whose pioneering, multifaceted work challenged traditional hierarchies and conventional binary oppositions, and asserted art’s urgent relevance to daily life. This bilingual, clothbound volume focuses on the formal logic that drove her bold and wide-ranging creative production while revealing how moving and working between mediums simultaneously expanded and crystallized her aesthetic. Alongside Fer’s new critical insights into Taeuber-Arp’s work, an essay by Jenny Nachtigall explores the artist’s “environments” and how notions of gravity, motion, and the cinematic offer keys to understanding the artist’s kinaesthetic sensibility.

Sophie Taeuber-Arp: La règle des courbes / The Rule of Curves is published on the occasion of an exhibition of Taeuber-Arp’s work at Hauser & Wirth Paris in early 2026.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Sophie Taeuber-Arp (1889–1943) is one of the most important artists of the twentieth-century avant-garde and is considered a pioneer of Constructivist art. Through her multi-faceted approach to media, she challenged traditional hierarchies between fine and applied art, and asserted art’s urgent relevance to daily life. Taeuber-Arp defied categorization during her brief career through her work as a painter, sculptor, architect, performer, choreographer, teacher, writer, and designer of textiles, stage sets, and interiors.

EDITED AND WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY ALEXIS LOWRY. TEXT BY MIRSINI AMIDON, LIZ DESCHENES, SHANAY JHAVERI, JOAN JONAS, LYNNE TILLMAN, AND JAMIESON WEBSTER. AFTERWORD BY DAVID LEWIS.

Discover the work of Susan Rothenberg in this captivating new publication, which brings together paintings from throughout the acclaimed American artist’s career.

Over five decades, Susan Rothenberg developed a charged visual language that carries immense physical presence, emotional intensity, and psychological nuance, redefining the medium of painting while capturing her unique vision of the world. This new publication offers a holistic representation of Rothenberg’s work, tracing her career from the monumental horse paintings that brought her to prominence in the 1970s, to the fragmented limbs and figures in motion that defined her production in the 1980s, through to the natural drama of New Mexico’s desert landscape which infused her work throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s.

Introduced by Alexis Lowry, brilliant reproductions and striking details of Rothenberg’s paintings are paired with thought-provoking responses by writers, artists, and thinkers including curator Shanay Jhaveri, artist Joan Jonas, and critic Lynne Tillman, while a meticulously researched biography provides insight into Rothenberg’s remarkable life.

Susan Rothenberg: The Weather is published in conjunction with an exhibition at Hauser & Wirth in New York in September 2025.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Born in Buffalo NY, Susan Rothenberg (1945–2020) received her BFA from Cornell University in 1967. She then moved to New York City, coming to prominence in the mid 1970s with her series of large-scale paintings of horses. Although Rothenberg’s imagery evolved significantly throughout her career, certain key elements in the structure of her compositions remained constant. Guided by a rigorous yet intuitive approach to painting, the arresting authority of Rothenberg’s art—evident from the start of her career—remained a commanding force until the end of her life.

The eloquent story of Eileen Harris Norton’s collection and its pivotal role in championing the work of women artists, artists of color, and changing narratives of contemporary art.

Since she acquired her very first artwork from Los Angeles printmaker Ruth Waddy in 1976, Eileen Harris Norton’s collection has bloomed into a beautiful reflection of her interest in the practices of women and artists of color, and work made in California. Alongside an exhibition of the same name at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles, Destiny Is a Rose celebrates fifty years of Norton’s remarkable collection, taking its title from a painting in the collection by Kerry James Marshall and featuring numerous iconic works of contemporary art by Mark Bradford, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, David Hammons, Glenn Ligon, Yoshimoto Nara, Adrian Piper, Betye Saar, Lorna Simpson, Carrie Mae Weems, and more. Texts by art historian Kellie Jones and curator Ingrid Shaffner delve into the critical role that education and philanthropy, representation and identity, and personal relationships with artists and curators have played in shaping Harris Norton’s visionary collecting practice. Offering deep insight into the act and impact of collecting, Destiny Is a Rose is a tribute to Harris Norton’s ongoing role as a vital agent of change and growth within the contemporary art world.

TEXT BY JACQUES HERZOG

A rare glimpse into the mind of Swiss architect Jacques Herzog, Calder Gardens: Drawings and Texts by Jacques Herzog traces the poetic and probing journey behind a visionary cultural landmark where architecture, art, and landscape meet.

Calder Gardens: Drawings and Texts by Jacques Herzog provides unique insight into the creative process that led to the architectural realization of the Calder Gardens in Philadelphia—a new cultural destination that brings together the visionary architecture of Herzog & de Meuron and the meticulous garden design of Piet Oudolf to celebrate the human spirit through Alexander Calder’s art.

This large-format publication invites readers to look over Jacques Herzog’s shoulder during the development of the project. Numerous sketches and drawings are grouped into ten chapters, from “Vertical Stacks of Fragments” to “The Underground Is Not Innocent,” each accompanied by an equally personal short text. As Herzog writes in the preface, “The drawings express uncertainty and doubt, perhaps also enthusiasm in moments when they made me believe I was reaching a new step in finding out what the architectural and sculptural identity of the project was going to be.” A selection of collages and study models round out this deep-dive into the acclaimed architect’s working method, artistic intelligence, and questioning, creative approach.

ABOUT JACQUES HERZOG

Jacques Herzog founded Herzog & de Meuron in 1978 with Pierre de Meuron. Their distinguished honors include the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the RIBA Royal Gold Medal and the Praemium Imperiale. Herzog was a visiting professor at Harvard GSD, Cornell AAP, and ETH Zurich. Herzog & de Meuron is an international architectural practice based in Basel, Switzerland and led by the two founders together with the Partners and the CEO.

EDITED BY MUSA MAYER AND SARA HARRISON. WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY MUSA MAYER.

TEXT BY MUSA MCKIM GUSTON.

An intimate account of a decade in the life of poet and painter Musa McKim and her husband Philip Guston, told through McKim’s journal entries and poems.

Bringing together Musa McKim’s journals and poetry, My Life with P.: The Journals of Musa McKim Guston, 1966–1976 draws an intimate and candid portrait of McKim’s life as a writer and her marriage to the esteemed painter Philip Guston. The book spans a critical decade in the couple’s marriage as well as a period of profound change and productivity in Guston’s artistic practice that saw the creation of some of his most iconic late works. McKim’s writings capture daily life at their home and studio in Woodstock, trips to New York City, travels abroad to Mexico and Italy, and time spent at various artist residencies. A rich collection of artworks and archival images documents the couple’s domestic and social lives and the fellow artists and writers who made up their world. Alongside her introduction, notes by their daughter Musa Mayer provide valuable context to her mother’s writings. Complementing Mayer’s own celebrated memoir Night Studio (1988), My Life with P. is an extraordinary window into McKim’s singular experience of the world.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Musa McKim Guston (1908–1992) was a poet and painter. Born in Oil City PA, she spent her early years in Panama and later studied at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, where she met her future husband, Philip Guston. During the 1930s and early 1940s, the couple both worked on WPA era murals, collaborating at times. After their daughter was born and they moved to New York, McKim began writing poetry and short prose pieces. Her poetry was published in several journals and literary magazines during her lifetime as well as in the 1994 collection Alone with the Moon
