MiSST Concert at Cambden Roundhouse

On 22nd April 2024 seven Hathershaw students and Miss Dawson and Miss Vickers travelled to London for the MiSST Annual Concert at the iconic Camden Roundhouse, London. Students participated in rehearsals during the day before taking to the stage for the evening performance. Mrs Goodwin, Mrs Russell and Mrs Mills were able to travel to London to support the event and had a wonderful evening. Even Gareth Malone was in the audience! After a long day of music everyone had a good night’s sleep before our day of sightseeing on the Tuesday. We started the day with a visit to the World Famous Madame Tussauds to meet some celebrities before travelling over to Leicester Square for a quick visit to M&M’s and a Pizza Hut lunch! Students were excellently behaved and have been commended by the MiSST central team in London for their outstanding attitude and behaviour! We’re already looking forward to next year’s event!

YORKSHIRE SCULPTURE PARK
Year 8 recently visited the Yorkshire sculpture park. Set in beautiful countryside we examined, discussed and drew from the sculptures.
The students loved the piece by Thomas J Price titled Network. We learnt about where the inspiration came from and the contrast between the traditional and contemporary. The intricate mosaic piece by MariaLuisa Tadei reminded us of a portal that took us into another world.

We nished the visit by drawing from the Needle woman piece by Kimsooja. The piece was created in partnership with Cornell University and was responsive to the daylight.

SUMMER VISITS
Year 7 students recently had the opportunity to sharpen their art skills with an artist led workshop at the Whitworth Gallery in Manchester. They worked hard and were pushed to re-evaluate everything they thought they knew about art!
Manchester Metropolitan University Degree Show 2024
The Degree Show celebrates the achievements of this year’s nal-year students with a showcase of work from across Art, Design, Fashion, Digital Arts, Performance and Architecture. It is for us our favourite time of the year. Year 10 had a fantastic morning touring all the exhibitions, they were particularly impressed with the SODA building, the fashion and also the architecture exhibits. Our graduate guides were particularly helpful and their guidance so valuable. The work this year is exceptional and this valuable visit makes such a di erence to the ideas of our GCSE students.

MiSST Residential to Gresham’s School

In July, pupils from Hathershaw will take part in the annual MiSST residential trip held at Gresham’s School in Norfolk. The three day residential programme includes all day rehearsals as a whole orchestra as well as work in smaller groups with expert instrumental tutors. Students are able to form friendships and musical relationships with others from all over the UK and everyone is able to show o their hard work in a large concert at the end of the residential. It’s not all just music though! Social time includes taking part in activities such as cosy club, football and even a climbing wall! An unforgettable experience that the Hathershaw Music Team love to be a part of!

The Power of Music
To celebrate and raise awareness of Make Music Day on the 21st June, Miss Vickers delivered an assembly to years 7-10 highlighting the impact music can have on us as individuals and the wider world. She discussed music and sport, as well as it being an inclusive universal language with a positive e ect on the economy and general health. Students found videos of Mr Bean performing at the Olympic Games entertaining and listening to Three Lions on a Shirt really got everyone into the spirit for the Euros!
