A WELCOME FROM

EDDIE HEARN

W

e’re back in the UK and back in the London bubble here at Wembley for another huge night of World Championship boxing at The SSE Arena, live and exclusive on Sky Sports in the UK and DAZN around the world. We have literally not stopped so far this year with what feels like shows every weekend. It’s great to be back in London after watching one of the best fights I have ever seen in my life last week in Dallas between Estrada and ‘Chocolatito’. Tonight, Hackney’s Lawrence Okolie aims to create history by becoming Britain’s seventh Cruiserweight World Champion, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Glenn McCrory, Carl Thompson, Johnny Nelson, Enzo Maccarinelli, David Haye and Tony Bellew.

In just 15 fights Lawrence has done it all and now it’s the moment of truth. Britain has the chance to crown another World Champion, but Lawrence has it all to do against a great fighter and former WBO World Champ in Krysztof Glowacki, who is someone that has mixed it consistently at the top level. A cracking undercard sees the return of the ‘Welsh Wizard’ Joe Cordina against Faroukh Kourbanov, Anthony Fowler looks to showcase his improvements under Shane McGuigan against Jorge Fortea, Chris Billam-Smith goes for the WBA Continental Title against Vasil Ducar, Bec Connolly jumps in to face Ramla Ali in her second pro fight, Catford Featherweight Ellie Scotney looks to build on her impressive debut and undefeated Middleweights Bradley Rea and Lee Cutler kick off the show. ■

awrence Okolie is confident of winning his first World Title in style by stopping former World Champion Krzysztof Glowacki when they clash for the vacant WBO Title in tonight’s main event at The SSE Arena, Wembley. The pair were due to clash on the undercard of Anthony Joshua’s emphatic ninth round knockout win over Bulgaria’s Kubrat Pulev in December but Glowacki was forced to withdraw from their contest after he returned a positive COVID-19 test. ‘The Sauce’ (15-0, 12 KOs) made short work of late stand-in opponent Nikodem Jezewski to stay on course for a shot at the WBO crown, demolishing the Pole in two brutal rounds with an impressive show of explosive power. Okolie hasn’t put a foot wrong since turning professional in 2017 following an impressive stint the amateurs that saw him represent Great Britain in the 2016 Rio Olympics, and the Hackney contender believes that March 20 will be the first step on his journey to unifying the Cruiserweight division before moving up to Heavyweight. “Five years ago, I was in Hackney and had no real plan or idea,” said Okolie. “I was boxing but I wasn’t on the GB team and I’d never had an international fight. I was just boxing and working. Five years down the line I’ve become a Team GB boxer, gone to the Olympics, turned pro and won all of

these Titles. Now I’m fighting for a World Title. “It feels like it’s going to be a massive statement winning this fight, not just for me but for the area that I come from, the type of person that I am and people that have dealt with bullying. I’m not here to be a hero or anything like that but I’ve had to deal with a lot of stuff, and a lot of people can relate to those kinds of struggles. It’s nice to know that people are motivated by it. “It will be entertaining for fans because there’s going to be someone trying to really put it on me. I believe I’m going to win by stoppage. I’m just excited to watch the highlights of the fight afterwards to see what shot I did it with. This is his opportunity to win what he believes is his Title back. He can be as strong as he likes against whoever he’s boxed so far but there’s no physical chance he’s stronger than me. “Although he’s got a lot of attributes, I can’t see any of them working against

“I BELIEVE I’M GOING TO WIN BY STOPPAGE” me. I think he’ll be confident. He’s a game guy and probably thinks it’s my first time at world level so I won’t be ready. One of my main attributes is my mental toughness. I have the ability to cope with any fight. I look forward to it. “If, god willing, I’m able to win here, I need a unification fight next. It’s about pushing on every time. I won the Commonwealth and pushed on, I won the British and pushed on, I won the European and I pushed on. After I win the World Title I want to unify and move up to Heavyweight. It’s all there, it just keeps me motivated in the gym and pushing for more.” ■

RECLAIMING THE

CROWN

K

rzysztof Glowacki says there are weaknesses in Lawrence Okolie’s game and has promised to take ‘his’ WBO Cruiserweight World Title back home with him to Poland after he beats the Hackney contender. Glowacki (31-2, 19 KOs) climbed off the canvas to score an eleventh round knockout over Germany’s Marco Huck to claim the WBO crown in 2015 before widely outpointing

America’s Steve Cunningham at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn in his first defence. ‘Glowka’, who is trained by Fiodor Łapin, was originally scheduled to face former Team GB star ‘The Sauce’ on December 12, however, the week prior to the fight, Glowacki, who is rated No. 3 by The Ring at 200 pounds, tested positive for COVID-19. The 34-year-old former Interim belt holder, who suffered a controversial stoppage loss to Mairis Briedis in

Riga last time out, has since been given a clean bill of health and is chomping at the bit for his ring return following a 21-month hiatus. “I’m very happy I can finally fight after such a long layoff,” said Glowacki. “I was absolutely devastated when I found out I was Covid positive, but every cloud has a silver lining. Now I feel better than in December. When I came back to training after Covid, I had some stamina issues, but everything is OK now. I feel pumped up and ready. “I’m hugely motivated for this fight. I’m going to have a great opponent in front of me who has big ambitions of his own. I heard Okolie had some plans to unify, but he has to beat me and it’s not going to happen. I will retrieve my belt and I will bring it back to Poland. I will become WBO World Champion for the third time in my career, there is no other option.

“I’LL BRING THE BELT BACK TO POLAND” “Okolie is unbeaten, he’s big and he’s strong. He has long arms and a huge reach, but I’ve noticed some weaknesses that you will see on the night. I’m ready for this fight and I’m ready to beat him. You will see on Saturday how I will beat him up. I’ve had a lot of sparring partners who were tall and uncomfortable. “The support I receive from the Polish people will always motivate me. It’s a shame that they cannot support me in person because a lot of people would have turned out to support me in London, but instead they will be cheering me on in front of their televisions. I’ll bring the belt home for them.” ■

WIZARD J

oe Cordina is determined to make up for lost time after recovering from a hand injury that has kept him out of the ring since his classy points win over Mario Enrique Tinoco that captured the WBA Continental Super-Featherweight Title at the Casino de Monte-Carlo back in November 2019. The ‘Welsh Wizard’ (11-0, 7 KOs) makes his long-awaited return tonight against Belgium-based Kyrgyzstani Faroukh Kourbanov and has promised to put the rest of the Super-Featherweight division on notice with a strong performance. Cordina, who had successfully defended the British and Commonwealth Lightweight Titles against compatriot Gavin Gwynne before dropping to 130lbs, is looking to raise his level of opponents as he hunts World Title action later this year, and the 29-year-old former Team GB standout believes that Kourbanov will bring the best out of him. “When I first injured my hand, I didn’t think it was going to get back to normal,” said Cordina. “But now I’m back training, using it and letting it go. I haven’t had any problems with it at all. It was always at the back of my mind, ‘is it going to be the same as it was before the injury?’. But I’ve come back and I’m just looking to move on and pick up where I left off. I’m looking forward to putting the SuperFeatherweight division on notice.

9

“I WANT TO BE FIGHTING FOR A WORLD TITLE BY THE END OF THIS YEAR”

“I’ve watched Kourbanov and he’s a good fighter. He’s only lost to European Champions. My goal is to become a World Champion and I’m not going to stop until I get there. He’s quite a neat boxer. He’s not a big puncher going off his record but that’s not saying he can’t punch. He’s been in with some good opposition and he’s lost to good opposition. “He’s from Kyrgyzstan boxing out of Belgium, normally they’re good amateurs. I can’t take his boxing skills for granted and think he’s going to be an easy touch. I’m looking forward to it because I know it’s going to be a tough fight. It’s going to be a fight that gets me back into the swing of things. That’s what I want. I don’t want easy fights. I want to be fighting for a World Title by the end of this year. I need someone like Kourbanov to bring the best out of me.” ■

aroukh Kourbanov says he is relishing the change to take on Former Team GB star Joe Cordina in the Welshman’s ring return following over a year out with a hand injury. The 29-year-old who is based in Dison in Belgium has only lost twice in 19 professional contests, with both defeats coming at European level, and has not been stopped since turning over in May 2015. Born in Kyrgyzstan, Kourbanov (17-2, 3 KOs) has fought for the European Union Super-Featherweight Title on three occasions, winning it against Petteri Frojdholm and then successfully defending it against Hakim Ben Ali before surrendering it to Italian veteran Devis Boschiero in 2018. Kourbanov fought for the full EBU European Super-Featherweight Title in October 2019 against Frenchman Samir Ziani in Agen, losing out on a unanimous decision, but it once

again demonstrated his ability to mix it at a high level. “I’m thankful for the opportunity, I know Joe is a great fighter and it’s not going to be easy,” said Kourbanov. “I’m going to give it 100%. I know he hasn’t boxed in a while, but I know in England the level of boxing is high and he probably has some really high-level sparring partners. It’s going to be tough fight but I’m going to bring my A game.” ■

nthony Fowler believes he is entering his prime years under trainer Shane McGuigan, and the former Team GB amateur standout wants to test himself against the biggest names in the 154lbs division to ‘see what he’s made of’. ‘The Machine’ progressed to 13-1 (10 KOs) last time out with a punishing seventh round stoppage of the tough and game Adam Harper at Fight Camp, but the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist is confident he is well beyond domestic level and has already expressed his desire to face European Champion Sergio Garcia this year. Next up for the recently-turned 30-yearold Liverpudlian is a defence of his WBA International Title against Spain’s Jorge Fortea, and Fowler is expecting a tough night’s work. “I thought I did well in the Harper fight, I knew his style would play into my hands whereas Fortea is tricky and will give me a lot more to think about,” said Fowler. “This fight is a good indication of where I’m at. I feel good, I’ve had a short camp but I’m fit anyway so there won’t be excuses on the night, I’ll be ready to fight. “Fortea is a really good fighter, he’s boxed on Canelo’s undercard and gone 12 rounds with the IBF No.1. He’s not the biggest puncher but he’s got good ring IQ and is very tough. I know he is going to make me work for the win. When I

beat him, I will be ranked in three of the four governing bodies. “I’m looking to box someone like Sergio Garcia next and then I won’t be far off a World Title fight. You’re only one big win away from a big fight and when I beat Fortea I hope some doors will open. I’m open to boxing Scott Fitzgerald in the summer but I’m not going to wait around for him. “I feel like I’ve fully adapted and I’m coming into my own under Shane now. I’m sparring 12 rounds easily and I feel a lot more at home in the ring.

“I’M COMING INTO MY OWN UNDER SHANE NOW” I’m coming into my prime now, I’ve just turned 30. I want to get in with the big boys and see what I’m made of. Shane is getting me to be more controlled and professional, if I can stop Fortea it will be a big statement. “I want to climb the rankings and win belts, starting with a win tonight. I won’t be surprised if Fortea gets through the rounds as he’s illusive, but I want to break him down and hurt him, winning is the most important thing!” ■

orge Fortea arrives on these shores for the first time looking to inflict a second career loss on rising Liverpool Super-Welterweight contender Anthony Fowler. Fortea (21-2-1, 7 KOs) took the IBF’s No.1 rated 154lbs fighter Bakhram Murtazaliev the twelveround distance on the undercard of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez vs. Sergey Kovalev at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in November 2019. The 30-year-old from Sueca in Spain says he gained a lot from mixing it at world level on the undercard of boxing’s biggest star and insists he isn’t worried about fighting in the UK for the first time. “I know that Fowler is a strong boxer, but I’m going to go out there and win,” said Fortea. “I hope I can get more fights of this level after I get the victory. I will fight the fight that I need to fight in order to win. I am not afraid of the judges. I think I will win on points. “I am very motivated to face Anthony Fowler. He likes to go forward. I’m eager to get in the ring to show the UK fans what I can do. The postponement forced us to stop preparing and start over, but I feel good and ready. “I learned a lot fighting in Las Vegas. Boxing in such an important place gives you experience. I have no pressure to box on the road. I’m not affected by boxing away from home because I am a calm boxer. “I am always going for victory. I want to get to the top of the world rankings to compete in more fights at this level. I know that I’m going to have to fight even harder as the away fighter, but this doesn’t worry me. I’m going to take advantage of this opportunity” ■

MAKING HER

E

llie Scotney says fans can expect to see the best version of her when she steps through the ropes for the second time as a professional against France’s Mailys Gangloff. Catford’s acclaimed former amateur star Scotney shined on her professional debut at the East of England Arena in Peterborough last October as she outpointed Bec Connolly over six rounds, dropping the tough 36-year-old in the third. The Adam Booth-trained starlet, who celebrates her 23rd birthday today, is hoping to follow in the footsteps of her Matchroom stablemates Katie Taylor, Terri Harper, Chantelle Cameron and Savannah Marshall, amongst others, by winning World Titles of her own in the future, but must first impress against Gangloff. “I’m so excited to get back in the ring for my second professional fight and show what I’ve been working on in the gym,” said Scotney. “Bec Connolly was tough and game as you come, I felt I showed bits of what I can do but now it’s time to step-up once again.

“NOW YOU’RE SEEING THAT WOMEN CAN FIGHT” “Mailys Gangloff was around on the amateur scene so she’s got that grade behind her. This is a great match and it’s another good fight for me. I know she’s certainly going to come to fight and with that you will see the best of me. “Now you’re seeing that women can fight. They’re putting on good action and people are really getting invested in it. It’s been a great time in lockdown for women’s boxing. You’re starting to see the real depth that they’re getting coming through. “Every fight I have got to tick another box and I believe I will do that in this fight. I am just starting to learn the style that suits me, this will be a great fight with Gangloff. It’s nice to hear that people are talking about me being a good prospect but talk is cheap! I’ve got to start delivering and it is very early days. I can’t run before I can walk, it’s one step at a time starting with Gangloff.” ■

ailys Gangloff is relishing the opportunity to test herself against former Team GB amateur standout Ellie Scotney. A shining amateur stint saw the London prospect win the 2017 Elite national amateur title at 57kg and the English Title at Youth level having entered after only four amateur bouts. The 23-year-old shined on her pro debut last October and has been tipped by many for big things in the paid code. France’s Gangloff (4-1, 1 KO) turned pro in February 2019 with a points win over Serbia’s Marian Dekic, before outpointing Slovakia’s Claudia Ferenczi a month later. The 25-year-old suffered her first loss against Elodie Bouchlaka in a challenge for the French SuperBantamweight Title but has a shot at the French Bantamweight Title lined up against Romane Geffray next month – an added motivation if one was needed. “I didn’t know that I was prepared to be in such a big fight. I’m very glad to be here so thank you to Matchroom for the opportunity,” Gangloff told promoter Eddie Hearn at Thursday’s press conference. “I really don’t know what to expect, I feel good so I think I will make a beautiful fight. We don’t have a lot of opponents who are game to fight. I’m very glad to be here with a real opponent.” ■

THE

GENTLEMAN

C

hris Billam-Smith says there is no chance of him overlooking his “tough” replacement opponent Vasil Ducar, but the reigning Commonwealth Cruiserweight Champion will be looking to stop him inside the distance when they collide in Wembley. ‘The Gentleman’ (11-1, 10 KOs), who blasted out Cardiff’s Nathan Thorley in two destructive rounds in the opening bout of Fight Camp Week 2 last August, was originally slated to battle English Champion Deion Jumah for the vacant British Title but will now take on the Czech Republic’s Ducar for the vacant WBA Continental Title. Impressive back-toback stoppage wins since his close points loss to Richard Riakporhe in 2019 have seen the Bournemouth powerhouse cement himself as one of the hottest properties in the UK Cruiserweight scene, and now the 30-year-old Shane McGuigantrained fighter will look to make his mark at European level, with a showdown against Belfast’s Tommy McCarthy in his sight lines. . “We’re in this sport to fight so when fights fall out close to the date it’s frustrating but I’m just looking forward to getting back in there and putting on

a show,” said Billam-Smith. “I’m learning all the time and that’s the way I’m looking at it, I’m far from the finished article and I’m using every day in camp to make sure I’m always improving. “Vasil Ducar was out sparring Mairis Briedis with me about a year ago and he’s very tough. He’s been in with some very good fighters who couldn’t get him out of there so I will be looking to go one better and end the fight inside the ten rounds.

“I’LL END THE FIGHT INSIDE TEN ROUNDS” “Shane also tells me how tough he is but my response to that is, ‘let’s see!’. He’s never been stopped and can clearly punch with 8 of his 9 wins coming by knockout. This is a good challenge for me at this stage of my career. “I would love to headline a show in Bournemouth later this year when crowds have returned. The Tommy McCarthy fight for the European Title really excites me or the rematch with Richard Riakporhe, but right now it’s all focus on Ducar.” ■

asil Ducar has had to work hard for his chance to land on the big stage – and he’s warned Chris Billam-Smith that he is ready to pour blood sweat and tears into earning a win that would kickstart his career. Ducar was an accomplished kickboxer who has also dabbled in MMA, but now his attentions are fully focused on boxing. The Czech has already boxed for a World Title in just his ninth pro-outing in June 2019, taking IBO ruler Kevin Larena the distance, and with eight of his nine wins coming inside the distance, he’s a real threat to the Briton tonight. “I’m very excited and so happy to be here,” said Ducar. “I want to show my quality and show to the world what I can do. “I remember Chris from when he was out sparring with Mairis Briedis, he’s tall and this will be an interesting fight. We have different styles which I think makes for a good fight. “As my record tells you I am a puncher, but my focus is on the ten rounds. 30 minutes is a long time and over the rounds I want the fight to be entertaining. I don’t have the pedigree and backing that Chris has. I’m used to being on the road and my hard work and sweat is what gives me these opportunities, I’m a warrior! “I fought for the IBO World Title after just nine fights, this shows you that I’m willing to take these challenges. I watch these shows on tv and now I am here, it’s amazing! “I think if I box my best, I can beat Chris. The fans are in for a treat.” ■

THE STORY

CONTINUES

R

amla Ali will look to impress again when she takes on late stand in Bec Connolly in a six round Featherweight clash at the scene of her first professional win last October. The Somali-British talent looked flawless on her highly anticipated entry into the paid code as she dominated Germany’s Eva Hubmeyer, comfortably winning all six rounds in her first fight without a headguard. As an amateur, she became the first female Muslim boxer to win an English Title before deciding to represent Somalia in 2017. Signed to Anthony Joshua’s 258 management team, Ali was hoping to represent her country at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo before the global pandemic intervened. She will look to harness that disappointment in the paid ranks and create more history by becoming Somalia’s first ever World Champion. But for now, Ali is fully focused on the job at hand. “Anyone that steps into the ring, you don’t take them lightly,” said Ali. “I know this is a serious fight and for me it’s just a step closer to what I want to achieve. You need to take the hard fights as and when they come, you shouldn’t ever shy away from them. You want to prove yourself and that’s what I want to do. “For me, this fight wasn’t my initial

opponent – thanks for Bec for stepping in. I’m happy to take these fights, be in these hard fights, even if it means earlier in my career, I just want to prove myself. She’s been saying that she wants to fight me for quite some time online, so I thought why not. I’m hoping it is a nice step-up and no doubt I know I’ll win, so I’m really looking forward to getting back in the ring again. “During Covid all the gyms were closed and a friend of mine who owns a gym in Ladbroke Grove kindly gave us the keys to his place. He said no one’s going to be in it so you guys might as well use it whenever you want, so we sort of had to just stay at a mate’s house close to the gym and that’s where we’ve been training.

“I JUST WANT TO PROVE MYSELF” “I’ve been to some horrible places in the world and there’s just no crowd. And I’ve done that from international boxing for the past four years and I’m used to no crowd, used to sort of cheering for myself and trying to uplift myself and be positive with myself. It’s no really anything new to me. I think what would be new to me is the day it flips, and the crowds are allowed to come back and I say wow what’s going on here! “There’s a lot of good female talent in this country and I know there’s a lot around the world as well. I’m very excited about competing all around the world, I’ve done all the international boxing for the last four years and for me personally I want the biggest fight of my career to be in America, Mexico or Asia.” ■

LADY

LUCK

B

ec Connolly tonight returns on her second Matchroom show in less than six months and is determined to make the most of her opportunity when she collides with Ramla Ali over six rounds. ‘Lady Luck’ showed her grit and toughness last time out when she took highly rated prospect Ellie Scotney the distance despite being dropped and hurt by the recently turned 23-year-old. That toughness has meant only 2 of her 8 losses have come inside the scheduled distances against world level operators Terri Harper and Natasha Jonas, and the 36-year-old has taken tonight’s challenge on short notice as she once again proves she is willing to fight anyone. “That’s what love about fighting, you never know what you’re going to get, and you have to adjust in the moment,” said Connolly. “I’m pretty excited, haven’t had much preparation only three days. I’ve had three spars at camp but I’m ready to go. “Heading into the fight with Ellie Scotney we knew how talented she was and exactly what we were up against. The division is thriving at the moment and I’m buzzing to be here. As I’ve proved time and time again, I will fight anyone! “I love my fitness, I train all year round, but I have not been doing any boxing or sparring because I have been working flat out. “I have taken this fight on 6 days’ notice against a good fighter in Ramla Ali, on a 3-day training camp. People will know the reasons for a loss if it happens. But when I’m here I get to do what I love doing. If I do win, then it sets up the year for me, so I can’t really lose, it’s win-win!” ■

STING

REA

S

tretford’s Bradley Rea steps through the ropes for the first time in over a year this evening as he puts his 0 on the line against fellow undefeated Middleweight Lee Cutler in the opening bout of the night. Rea (9-0, 3 KOs) was last in action on the Scott Quigg vs. Jono Carroll undercard at Manchester Arena in March 2020 when he outpointed Slovakian journeyman Pavol Garaj over six rounds to maintain his unblemished record. The 23-year-old prospect, who is managed by Steve Wood and trained by Blain Younis, will be hoping to catch the eye of Matchroom head honcho Eddie Hearn after finding opportunities hard to come by since the pandemic hit. “Lee is a great fighter, but there’s not much opportunity going about at the moment,” said Rea. “It’s a fight I believe I can win, he believes he can win, it’s going to be a great fight. “With no crowds and the smaller shows, we’ve both missed out and not been able to box for a year. It’s a massive opportunity, we both know what a huge opportunity it is and what it could lead to. That’s why tonight I’m ready to put it all on the line so it’s going to make for a great fight. “It’s been hard during the pandemic. There’s been ups and downs. Some days I was positive but some days I was feeling negative. I’ve got a good team around me who dragged me through it and supported me. I’ve not boxed in a year now, but my team made sure I was getting top sparring against the likes of Liam Williams and JJ Metcalf.” ■

OPPORTUNITY

KNOCKS

B

ournemouth’s unbeaten Middleweight charge Lee Cutler searches for his big breakthrough win when he meets fellow unbeaten 160lber Bradley Rea in tonight’s opening clash which is a genuine 50-50 match-up. The 25-year-old who is trained by Kev Thorniley at Bendall’s Gym is back under the lights for the first time since stopping Owen Jobburn in two rounds at The O2 Academy in his hometown back in November 2019. Since making his professional debut in September 2018, Cutler has won all seven of his paid bouts, including four by KO, but tonight marks by far the toughest test of his career to date. Since the coronavirus pandemic brought the sporting world to a halt, staying ready has often been advised by promoter Eddie Hearn, who’s ‘winner stays on’ offer means victory for Cutler could create more big opportunities in 2021. “I am buzzing to be here, and I know this is going to be a cracking fight,” said Cutler. “We have sparred before, I know what style he brings, I know what style I bring, and I know this will be a brilliant fight for the fans. “I can’t wait to hear the punches landing. Me and Chris are both from Bournemouth and we want to be a part of a big show there so it’s important we both come through our fights.” ■
