Welcome to Quintessentially Cotswolds

Welcome to Quintessentially Cotswolds, the Harvey Holland magazine. As the Creative Director, it is a pleasure to introduce a publication that is more than a showcase of beautiful homes; it is a love letter to the Cotswolds, the place we are lucky enough to call home.

Harvey Holland was founded on a simple belief: that modern estate agency should feel both personal and effective. We live our lives here. Our children go to school locally, we shop in the same farm shops, and we walk the same footpaths. We move through the same circles as our clients, which means we understand their environments, their lifestyle, and the way they want to be represented. This connection shapes our work and means we care deeply about the people, the homes, and the stories behind them.

Our team is formidable not because of size, but because of passion. Each member brings experience, creativity, and a commitment to delivering service that feels contemporary, warm, and thoughtful. Whether we are crafting bespoke marketing, filming cinematic video, or quietly matching a home with a buyer from our private black book, our goal remains the same: to deliver excellence for every client, with dedication to successful outcomes and a modern approach that suits the pace of busy lives. We act as trusted partners, leading with confidence while working collaboratively throughout.

In this issue you will find a curated selection of our latest listings, a wonderful feature on artist Susannah Taylor alongside pieces on our favourite local partners, places to eat, hidden gems, and the local tales that make the Cotswolds such an extraordinary place to live.

Thank you for picking up our first edition. We are delighted to share the world of Harvey Holland with you.

Creativity Calling

Cotswold dweller Susannah Taylor has been a beauty and wellbeing editor for over 25 years. Now, launching her art into the world, she tells us why she feels it’s time to spread her creative wings.

I have this theory that the thing we are most happy doing at 10 years old is our true north. It’s the thing that naturally lights us up before life and all its’ complexities get in the way.

When I think back to myself as a child, all I did was paint and draw. Art classes were heaven to me–even now I can almost remember the smell of the classroom and the woody scent of paper and paints. As a teen I would regularly draw all over my school work, paint on my clothes, my friends’ clothes, my shoes, and (with my parents permission) the furniture in my bedroom. It’s no surprise then that I have recently returned to the comfort of my creative roots.

For the past 25 years I have been a beauty and wellbeing editor which has been an incredible and life-enriching adventure. I started out, fresh out of St Martins school of Art, desperate to be a fashion editor. However the universe had other plans and I fell into the world of beauty and health instead. From being appointed beauty and health editor at Vogue aged 28 to launching the website getthegloss.com in my 30’s, to writing about holistic wellness in my 40’s with columns in YOU magazine, Grazia and The Telegraph, it’s been a whirlwind filled with travel, so much learning and meeting wonderful people.

I have this theory that the thing we are most happy doing at 10 years old is our true north.

Yet in recent years it’s felt that something was missing. The world of publishing has changed hugely and about 4 years ago I found myself increasingly frustrated that I couldn’t write about the things I believed in. I wasn’t interested in writing about biohacking because I believe the best way to ‘biohack’ is to get back to basics. And I’ve seen enough wellness trends come and go to know that most of them are just flash-in-the-pan fads. In an overly digitalised, AI dominated world, I was desperate to write about ‘ways to feel more human’. And so I started my own newsletter called The Glow Gazette (www.susannahtaylor.com) , a monthly newsletter that aims to nourish your mind, body and spirit.

But still, I felt creatively unfulfilled. And whilst I have always painted here and there, working with brands and posting up the odd illustration, last year I had an overwhelming urge to use my creativity and my hands more. I’m a firm believer that it’s something we don’t do enough of in our keyboard-tapping, screen-swiping world and research shows that using our hands to create things actually lights up our brain.

So one morning last year I decided it was time to stop doing my art as a side hustle and start tapping into that 10 year old creative spirit. With the nature in our courtyard garden as my inspiration, I started painting. It began with a mural at home crammed with

delphiniums, astrantia, roses, foxgloves, birds, bees, caterpillers and butterflies. I called it ‘A walk though a Midsummer’s Garden.’ I then painted a ‘Wall of herbs’ in another Cotswold bathroom and launched some fine art prints. Brand work followed and I’ve taken many painting workshops from Daylesford to Soho Farmhouse. However the highlight of this year has most definitely been my first exhibition at Edward Bulmer Natural Paint on the Pimlico Road in London.

The theme of the exhibition was FLOWER POWER which became a deep dive into the symbolism of flowers. We all know that roses represent ‘LOVE’ but I wondered what the rest of the flower world meant. In each piece I used Edward Bulmer’s beautiful shades as the backdrop, from geraniums on ‘Persian’ yellow stripes, to wild poppies on ‘Saxony’ a deep teal. I also painted a large folding screen inspired by an Ibiza garden I visited this year, full of pines, limes, peaches, olive branches and cacti.

A year on I feel like my love of painting has merged with my world in wellness. In fact, recent research show that people that engage with the arts live a longer, happier life. I’m keen to spread the word that creativity is wellness, as well as being an antidote to the sterile world of digital. And as AI takes over, it may be the greatest gift we humans have.

Purslane, Cheltenham

Purslane is a small, independent family-run restaurant in the heart of Cheltenham which specialises in the freshest, sustainably-caught seafood from British waters combined with the best local, seasonal produce the Cotswolds has to offer.

With bi-monthly changing À La Carte and Tasting menus and a weekly-changing Light Lunch menu we capture the flavour of the best of Britain’s wild larder. The fish we use is sourced from small, inshore day-boat fishermen who use handlines and nets off the coast of Cornwall. They don’t damage the seabed by trawling and they land their fish on the same day it’s caught so it can be fresh on your plate the very next day. Chef/Patron, Gareth Fulford leads a small team to bring out the best in these ingredients using every technique available from traditional saltbaking to barbecuing to sous vide. At front of house, our team pair these beautiful meals with stunning wines and a relaxed, friendly service.

Whether you’re popping in for a quick lunch, stopping in before a night at the theatre, or spending the evening dining À La Carte with friends after a great day at Cheltenham Races, Purslane offers an intimate and welcoming atmosphere that you’ll want to revisit time and time again.

The Royal Oak Whatcote

The Royal Oak, Whatcote is situated just outside the market town of Shipston on Stour. It dates back to 1168 and is one of the oldest public houses in the country. They proudly offer a bar with pool table and darts, alongside our Michelin-starred dining room, which showcases terroir-driven, ‘proper country food’. Richard, Solanche and the rest of The Royal Oak team are extremely proud to offer Michelin-starred dining on the edge of the Cotswolds with a seasonally driven, game-focussed menu**. They work closely with a small core of quality producers. Game is often from the surrounding hills and estates. With a focus on wild meats and foraged ingredients their aim is simple: they want to tell the story of their local community, the producers themselves and how they’ve utilised their ingredients. Sometimes a dish will be on the menu for a six -week period, fully celebrating the early or late season. Conversely a dish may be fleeting–a week, a service or even just for a single table of regulars–a micro-seasonal snapshot.

The more creative chefs are often credited with serving up ‘pictures on plates’, but Nik Chappell, pictured above, is better placed than many of his contemporaries as he started out as an artist. Whilst working at local pubs, Nik fell in love with food and so a career in the kitchen beckoned. Having previously held Head Chef positions at restaurants including L’Ortolan, Mallory Court, and The Tudor Room, Nik has won accolades including four AA rosettes during his time at L’Ortolan, and enjoys a reputation for creating exciting and expertly executed fine dining menus.

Renters Reform Act

The 1st March 2026

What It Means For You...

The Renters Reform Act is one of the most significant updates to the rental market in years. Designed to bring greater balance and fairness to the sector, it aims to make renting simpler, safer and more secure for everyone.

But with so many headlines and conversations surrounding the changes, it’s natural to feel unsure about what it all means in practice. Below, we break down the key points in a clear, friendly way, and share how our team can support you every step of the way.

The Biggest Changes at a Glance:

The most talked-about update is the end of Section 21 “no-fault” evictions. This change means that landlords will need to give a legitimate reason for ending a tenancy, helping tenants feel more settled and secure. In return, the legal grounds for regaining possession, such as selling a property or moving back in, have been strengthened to give landlords clearer protection and structure.

Another big shift is the move to periodic tenancies. Instead of fixed terms, tenancies will roll on monthly, giving tenants the flexibility to move with two months’ notice, and giving landlords updated legal routes if they need their property back.

There is also a new requirement for all landlords to join a single Property Ombudsman, making it easier to resolve issues without going to court. And with the introduction of a national Property Portal, the rental sector becomes more transparent, with clearer expectations and better record-keeping.

Finally, the reforms place a spotlight on pets, encouraging landlords to consider pet requests more openly. Tenants can be asked to carry pet insurance, offering reassurance that homes remain protected.

What Landlords Need to Know:

For landlords, the reforms may feel like a big adjustment, but many updates are designed to bring structure and clarity. Without Section 21, the focus shifts to clear legal grounds, giving landlords firm, reasonable routes for possession when needed. Whether you’re selling a property, planning to move back in, or dealing with breaches, the strengthened grounds aim to make the process more straightforward.

Compliance becomes more important, too. The Property Portal and mandatory Ombudsman membership are designed to raise standards and reduce uncertainty. Keeping documentation accurate and up to date will help landlords stay protected and avoid unnecessary disputes.

While allowing pets may feel like a new responsibility, the ability to require pet insurance provides an additional safety net. Many landlords find that pet-friendly homes attract longer-staying, more settled tenants.

How we help: We stay on top of legislation so you don’t have to. From tenancy agreements and notices to compliance, inspections and dispute support, our team guides landlords through every requirement with calm, reassuring expertise.

What Tenants Need to Know:

For tenants, the reforms offer greater peace of mind. The removal of Section 21 means you can feel more settled in your home, knowing you cannot be asked to leave without a fair reason. This added security helps tenants plan, put down roots and feel more confident in the rental process.

The shift to periodic tenancies also gives tenants more flexibility. Rather than being tied to long fixed terms, tenants will be able to move on with two months’ notice, supporting changing jobs, family needs or life plans with less stress.

The introduction of a single Ombudsman gives tenants a clearer and more accessible way to raise concerns if they feel something hasn’t been handled properly. And for those with pets, the reforms offer a fairer chance to request permission, with decisions required to be reasonable rather than automatic.

How we help: Our team is here to listen, guide and support throughout your tenancy. We act as a friendly bridge between tenants and landlords to make sure conversations stay open, fair and respectful.

How We Support Everyone Through the Change:

Change can be daunting, especially when it affects your home or your investment. But the Renters Reform Act also brings opportunities with clearer rules, fairer processes and a more modern way of managing homes.

Our role as your local property experts is to make everything feel simple. We keep up with legislation, manage compliance, guide conversations, and ensure both landlords and tenants feel informed and supported.

Whether you’re preparing a property for the new regulations, navigating updated possession routes, or wanting clarity on your rights and responsibilities, we’re here to help. Our focus is always on creating positive, long-term relationships built on trust, transparency and care.
