INTERVIEW WITH MR. SIPPLEFOUNDING HEAD OF HARROW NEW YORK

AUTHOR:

How do you define concept of “legacy”

ne’s legacy is what we leave behin that improves the world. It's how w make the world a better place. It what continues after we’re gone

WHAT ARE YOUR REFLECTIONS ON BEING APPOINTED AS THE

PRINCIPAL OF HARROW NEW YORK?

I am honored to be in this role It's an ama experience I get to contribute to the life of school and learn every day from everyb that we have on staff We love working toge to create this amazing new school I just very honored and blessed

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT DISTINGUISHES HARROW NEW YORK FROM OTHER

EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS?

Harrow New York is unique amongst all the schools I've ever worked in and the ones I've known It brings together different traditions and cultures into one place So, you have an international school that's American, with British values and traditions, that's owned by an Indian educational group So, you've got four different entities coming together We've got London, New York, New Delhi, and we've got international families And on top of that, the IB curriculum, so, if you, look anywhere else in the world, for a school like ours, that brings together IB, India the US and the tradition of the UK, it doesn't exist We're really unique

MEET OUR PRINCIPAL

AUTHOR: DEREKS.& DYLANJ.

WHAT HAVE YOU OBSERVED DURING THE FIRST WEEKS OF SCHOOL THAT GIVES YOU HOPE FOR THE FUTURE OF HARROW , NEW YORK?

The people, the teachers and the students that we brought together for this school, are just so inspiring: the different backgrounds and experiences and cultures, races, ethnicities, religions, it's just what you want for an international school that's so dynamic and supportive, it's what makes a school a school and it's what makes us a fantastic school- our people.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? HOW HAS YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF IT EVOLVED OVER TIME?

For me, success is different for every context, for every person. To me, success is living a life without major regrets. If you can picture yourself towards the end of your life being content with everything that you were able to accomplish, to me that's a successful life And this has evolved over time for sure I used to think that success meant recognition, power, money, things that you were able to buy, and none of that really matters

If you could share one message with the world, what would it be ?

ThemostimportantmessageIwouldwanttoremindeverybodyofisthatpeaceisthemostimportantthingthatwe mustprotectandpreserve.Apeacefulwayoflife.Inorderforustoflourishandsurviveasacultureandsocietyand ashumanspecies.Weneedtofindawaytostopthisneedlessviolence, whetherit'sonthestreetorwarinUkraine or Israel, these wars and this violence is just robbing us all of us of our dignity, in the sense that we must stand by knowing that this is happening around the world every day, and it's just so damaging for the people involved, but alsoforeverybody.Wearetogetherasaworld, knowingthatwecan'tstopit, thatit'shappeningoutthere, andthe worldleadersarenotstoppingit, andit'ssodamaginginmanyways.

As Harrovians, and as the founding publication committee of Ink & Ivy, we wanted to acknowledge the legacy of the land that we live and learn on.

Thousands of years before Europeans colonized America, what we now know as Oakdale, NY, was located on the ancestral lands of the Native American people of Long Island, primarily the Unkechaug and Shinnecock Nations. Before European settlements, this area was part of the territory known by various indigenous names such as Sewanhacky and Paumanok, and was home to communities whose lives were profoundly changed by the arrival of settlers in the 1600s.

The Unkechaug Nation is one of the two recognized tribes on Long Island today. The Shinnecock Nation is the other recognized tribe on Long Island. Before colonization, Long Island was known by the Native American names Sewanhacky and Paumanok and was home to various indigenous communities.

Despite the hardships faced by these communities, they are still present and strong today. They work hard to exercise their sovereignty through activism and advocacy; through environmental stewardship; through the preservation of their culture and traditions, and through their ongoing efforts to achieve economic self-sufficiency.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians A Series

Let’s say that you ’ re a normal sixth grader , or you think that you are, then suddenly your algebra teacher grows wings and tries to kill you Pretty hard to imagine, right? Well Rick Riordan was able to imagine that as the first chapter of The Lightning Thief titled ‘I Accidentally Vaporized My Pre-Algebra Teacher’. Percy Jackson is truly a timeless series which was one of the first series to combine mythology and modern times. Many other books take inspiration from this iconic series such as I am Hermes which features when Hermes, the messenger of the gods returns to the earth in modern times This iconic series only rises in popularity due to its fourteenth book’s recent debut

Percy Jackson starts out as a 12-year-old boy with dyslexia and ADHD. He’s on a field trip with his class, when his substitute math teacher , Mrs. Dodds, reveals herself to him as a Fury. After getting attacked by her and expelled, his mom takes him on a trip for his birthday They get attacked by the Minotaur His best friend, Grover , jumps in, reveals himself as a satyr , and brings Percy Jackson to a place called Camp Half-Blood: A summer camp for the children of the Greek gods He finds out he’s the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea He’s sent on many quests and befriends children of the other gods along the way , as well as falling in love with his best friend and daughter of Athena, Annabeth.

Percy Jackson, having ADHD and dyslexia, gives us a unique outlook on our main character Readers who may have one or both conditions likely feel included These conditions are often portrayed wrongly in most kinds of media, either overly positively or overly negatively However , in Percy Jackson the subject isn’t focused on and is only an afterthought which doesn’t affect his life very much.

The Percy Jackson series will likely continue to be a staple to mythology fans all across the world, as it continues to make us question just how long one series can be

The World's Opening Has Been Established

1 of January, 1892 st Ellis Island, Opening Day

One bright sunny day, I look aboard and see an island as raindrops fall. As we dock the ship, I carry all my luggage to the mainland As I wait for my name to be called, I hear "SOFA." then I walk down the hallway, they examine me briefly. They ask where I live, who my friends are and as I get my card to wait for my second examination, I see my friend when I walk closer, I say "Hi" and wave As she waves back, I see that she is pregnant and is emotionally broken due to the administrators of Ellis Island not accepting pregnant women Later after we talk, we wave goodbye, I cry tears that glisten in the morning sun. As they call my name, I walk closer and closer to the examination room The more I walk, the more scared I become. when I sit, they tell me to read. as I begin to read, I mess up due to reading not being my strong suit Later I begin to fail, I catch myself and try to do better. I keep walking down the long corridors filled with crying and think, was it worth the loss of friends, family, and my home?

Jacob Long, Pre-Shell, wrote this diary entry in Foundations of Learning and Writing, as part of a unit on personal narrative writing

An Inspirational Legacy: Battle for Dream Island

Imagine yourself competing in a gameshow. Ok, now that that’s in your mind, imagine yourself competing in a gameshow as an inanimate object. Not easy, huh? Well, fifteen years ago, when they were only in fifth grade, that’s what twin brothers Michael and Cary Huang envisioned in their head, which created a world-popular show, “Battle for Dream Island”.

BFDIbegan with the first drawing made on May 9, 2008, featuring fan-favorite characters like Firey, Spongy, Woody, Teardrop, and Match. This drawing laid the foundation for the series, which has since evolved through various generations of characters and content. Some of the characters that have been seen in the fourth and fifth seasons, as well as the subscriber specials, have been mistaken as newer characters by many. But these Algebraliens, the characters in question, were featured in an animation the twins created in first grade called “X Finds Out His Value”. All of the characters are well loved, except for one. Literally One. Many of the fans, specifically the lovers of Two, dislike her. Long story short, she removed Two’s best friend from the timeline.

Because of BFDI’s major success, so many new object shows have been created. One of the most popular ones, as well as the second object show to be created, is called “Inanimate Insanity”, created by Adam Katz. This was heavily inspired by BFDI itself. It features even more inanimate objects, like Orange Juice, MePhone4, Steve Cobs, and Suitcase. These are just a few, as there are many more. Another popular show was actually created by the man who voiced Two in BFDI, called Showvember. This is directed for a more mature audience, with memorable characters like Popcorn, Rotten Apple, Radish, Screwdriver, and more. There are so many shows, and to name a few more, there’s It’s Time For The, Animatic Battle, and The Nightly Manor.

This show has had amazing growth since it started, having tours every summer with Inanimate Insanity, awesome merch, and even two episodes that came out as movies!

HOUSE LEGACY

THE LIVING LEGACY OF WEST ACRE & THE GROVEFROM HARROW ON THE HILL TO HARROW, NEW YORK

The Grove

The Grove’s origins date back to 1094, wheN a rectory was built at the highest point of the Hill. Over the centuries, this space has been occupied by Archbishops of Canterbury, playwrights and politicians. It was first called ‘The Grove’ and first became a boarding house in 1820 Sadly, in 1833 the House burnt down and had to be rebuilt in 1836. The Grove has an amazing soccer/football legacy, which our Harrow New York Grovians take great pride in, as the first ever housemaster was a founding member of the Football Association In 2020, The Grove celebrated its 200 anniversary as a Boarding House at Harrow. th

This character is Vox from one of my favorite shows I chose Vox because he shows how legacy has changed over time. Instead of being something written in books or carved in stone, today’s legacy often lives through technology and media. Vox represents that shift how influence and memory can last through screens and digital spaces, shaping the future in a way that feels permanent.

This character is from an anime; she is an a thousand-year-old elf who is trying to better understand humankind and relationships. I thought that she would tie into legacy because even though she’s been alive for thousands of years and a very powerful mage on top of that, she still has everyday problems like not wanting to wake up in the morning.

I made this drawing in the car and finished it in the ski resort we were staying at. This character was based off of a reference I saw at art class, I really liked the reference and decided to take some of the features from the reference and make a whole new character it took four pages in my notebook and two hours of my time but at the end I really liked how it turned out.

The Outtakes

Featured on this page are the initial creative explorations for what became Ink & Ivy

These designs were ultimately decided against for a variety of reasonsprioritizing artistic academic output, setting ourselves apart from the school newspaper, and eventually landing on a solid name. However, we thought readers might enjoy seeing the process behind the finished product

What legacy means to us

“The Meaning of Legacy”

-Shmuel Dori-

To me, legacy means importance To me, legacy means being seen Legacy is like a ripple, passing down the pond

But in to say in non-metaphorical terms, legacy passes down generations But the question is, for many people like me, What would you want your legacy to be?

“The Legacy Within Us”

When I wake up every morning I find myself excited for the day, knowing that I’m part of a beautiful school with beautiful opportunities I am blessed to know amazing people that will help shape the legacy of this amazing place I always find myself wondering, “Isn’t it wonderful to be part of a legacy not only for the school, but also one within ourselves?”

“Be the light you wished guided you in darkness”

-Derek Sandoval-

Legacy is a home calling my name, its voice muffled by grief and years of oppression It is also the pot and soil that once nourished a beautiful flower And today after being picked violently from my soil and leaving my roots behind, I realize that one day I will become a stranger to my home, and my home a stranger to me, because the roots eventually wither and the soil erode Legacy is not bound to the past or future It lives in the present where lessons shape the mind, and love helps it bloom and guide others

“legacy”

When we are born, we are nothing more than mere infants, our families nurtured us to become great beings, our families put hope, love, and warmth into us someday we will all come to a end, we will all witness the light fade away, we will perish, but we shall be remembered we will fall, until that time comes we shall make a lasting impact, an impact of kindness, the same kindness our families had show us we will leave behind great legacies

My Definition of Legacy

-Yuhan Huang-

To me Legacy means the action of passing down ideas, safe keeps, traditions, or money

“Literary Legacy”

-Andrea Moon-

For me, legacy conjures up images of writers across time building on the ideas, images, inspirational phrases and foundational blocks of literature. It is Keats looking to Milton, it is Porter looking to Hughes, it is Barrett-Browning looking to Shakespeare. The shared joy of literature is a legacy it is a deep privilege and endless joy to mine, explore and share
