CASE STUDY: WOLTERTON HALL, NORFOLK

Wolterton Hall is one of Norfolk’s most impressive 18th-century rural estates. The historic hall sits within 500 acres of parkland, woodland and landscaped gardens that have evolved carefully over time.

The estate’s grounds were originally designed by Charles Bridgeman, one of the leading figures of the English landscape movement. His work established a layout that balances formal structure with the surrounding natural landscape. Today, Wolterton continues to restore and maintain the gardens and grounds with great care. Any additions to the estate are selected to complement the historic setting while supporting the practical needs of gardening and estate management.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

At Wolterton Hall, garden structures and furniture must be both practical and sympathetic to the historic landscape. Harrod Horticultural products were selected for their durability, clean design and ability to sit comfortably within the estate’s gardens.

Ergonomically superior seat, bench and sofa designs for ultimate comfort, even without a cushion.

Much thought has gone into the careful selection of the material sections used to ensure just the right amount of ‘give’ is coupled with the required structural strength. For comfort and aesthetics, the back rest is curved and the seat base is tapered front to back, both using a lighter 3mm thick slat, which provides essential ‘give’ and ‘spring’. Meanwhile, the main framework features scrolled arms, back and leg detail using 8mm thick strip steel and has attractive curved bracing for strength and rigidity.

DISCOVERING THE CHARM OF ORDNANCE HOUSE: A GARDEN Q&A WITH TERRY WINTERS

Nestled in the picturesque hills of Wiltshire, Ordnance House is a stunning garden designed by the award-winning gardener Terry Winters. Since moving to Ordnance House in 2011, Terry has transformed the garden from a blank canvas into a vibrant landscape filled with lavender, alliums, and structured beds. His garden, celebrated by the Royal Horticultural Society and featured on BBC’s Gardeners’ World, exemplifies a thoughtfully designed space that harmonises with its natural surroundings.

We spoke with Terry to explore the inspirations behind his garden and how garden structures have played a pivotal role in his design.

CRAFTING A GARDEN VISION

Q: When you began designing the garden at Ordnance House, what was your vision, and how did the site influence your decisions?

Terry: My background in advertising allows me to see the world through an imaginary lens. At Ordnance House, I envisioned the garden as interconnected scenes that frame views from both the house and within the garden. The chalky hillside presented challenges, but it also inspired me to incorporate drought-tolerant plants, which thrive in the sunny, south-facing environment.

THE ROLE OF GARDEN STRUCTURES

Q: How do arches, obelisks, and other garden structures fit into your design philosophy?

Terry: Garden structures are essential for providing support to climbing plants while adding vertical interest. Arches and obelisks create focal points and pathways, guiding visitors through the garden. The structural elements maintain visual interest throughout the seasons, anchoring the blooms and ensuring that the garden remains engaging year-round.

CASE STUDY: HOVETON HALL’S KITCHEN GARDEN –A VISITOR HOT SPOT

The Kitchen Garden at Hoveton Hall has blossomed into a thriving example of modern horticulture, merging heritage and innovative design. Established with the help of Harrod Horticultural products in Spring 2022, this project offers valuable insights for garden designers looking to create beautiful, functional spaces that enhance both aesthetic appeal and practicality.

REVIVING HISTORY

Once a Victorian Kitchen Garden, this one-acre walled space has been transformed while preserving its rich history. While it continues to supply fresh fruit and vegetables to Hoveton Hall, the garden now features expansive lawns and vibrant herbaceous borders. The traditional yew hedge and central laburnum arch add elegance, framing the new Kitchen Garden, which sits adjacent to the picturesque Spider Garden Cottage.

HORTICULTURAL HIGHLIGHTS

The Kitchen Garden is a showcase of thoughtful design, featuring various Harrod Horticultural products that enhance the user experience.

Key elements include:

• Walk-In Peak Roof Steel Fruit Cage: This structure houses three Superior Wooden Raised Beds equipped with Espalier Frames, providing an effective and attractive solution for growing fruits.

• Metal & Wooden Raised Beds: Arranged in the centre of the plot, the beds are rotationally planned to grow an abundance of fruit and vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, beetroot, chard, lettuces, radishes, leeks, dwarf beans and courgettes.

• Roman Arch: A central focal point that supports climbers, creating a shaded walkway adorned with sweet peas. Flanking this arch are two Southwold Pyramid Obelisks, offering vertical interest and symmetry.

• Step Over Support and Harrod Espalier Frame: Positioned to maximise growing space while adding functionality.

2016

Harrod Horticultural secures bespoke product designs from top garden designers Andy Sturgeon and James Basson, and wins the BALI Affiliate Award for Best Customer Service for the second year in a row. This is also the year Harrod UK’s Innovation Centre opens.

2017

Harrod Horticultural begins supplying UK garden centres with its then RHS-endorsed steel wire range of obelisks and plant supports.

2018

Harrod Horticultural wins the BALI Award for Employee Excellence and is awarded its first 5-star trade stand at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

2019

Harrod Horticultural launches a new-look website.

2020

The Southwold Furniture Range is launched.

2021

Harrod Horticultural supplies Southwold Garden Furniture to the Wilderness Reserve. Arches, obelisks and cages are also supplied to the ground breaking RHS Hilltop Edible Garden and furniture to the RHS trials garden.

2022

Harrod Horticultural takes the Southwold Furniture to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for the first time.

2024

Became an SGD Gold Sponsor and celebrates the 70th anniversary of Harrod UK.

2025

Harrod Horticultural launches new products to enhance the Southwold Range, including the Blacksmith’s Arch and furniture folding range.
