Feast Down East
Partner of the month
Feast Down East (FDE) strengthens the SENC food system by supporting small to mid-sized farms and expanding access to fresh, healthy food in underserved communities.
From our regional Food Hub in Burgaw and program offices at The Harrelson Center, we help farmers grow their businesses through distribution, marketing, technical support, and scholarships while connecting their locally grown products to schools, restaurants, nonprofits, and neighborhoods through the Local Motive Mobile Farmers’ Market and our Farmers Fighting Hunger program.
In 2024, FDE generated more than $2 million in community impact, returned over $397,000 directly to farmers, and moved more than 249,000 pounds of local food throughout the region — ensuring a stronger food system where farmers thrive and families are nourished.
There’s not a more delicious way to support the work of FDE than by attending one of the dinner fundraisers above. Info and tickets can be found on our website’s event page.

Speaking of hearts, Margaret Sharp of American Heart Association (AHA) was on campus last month to provide a train-the-trainers workshop to HC Staff.
Our very own CPR training kit, with ten Mini Annes for CPR practice, will be here in 2026 and HC will be able to take part in AHA’s goal to have one person in every household who knows how to provide hands-only CPR by 2030.

Housing Navigation Storytime!
The young daughters of a Housing Navigator’s clients recently joined their mom for a appointment with Nikki - here's how the conversation went:
Mom: This is the lady who found our housing!
Girls: [excitedly] Really?!? Thank you!!!
Nikki: Your mom and I did it together, because the housing program is about partnering with the client in that both the case manager and the client have to do the work and it was truly a joint effort.
Girls: [look at mom]
Mom: Yes it was a team effort
Nikki said the girls’ look of admiration toward their mom was priceless. The girls were also delighted to get Halloween costumes and trick-or-treat bags from one of HC Partners.
Mom text Nikki shortly after the apartment approval came in, “Thank you for being there for me. I’m starting to get excited now. It’s really happening.”
About Housing Navigation
So far, 42 clients have completed HC’s 90day Housing Navigation (HCHN) program since it launched in May. HCHN offers referrals to community resources, financial stabilization assistance, and help to identify & enter alternative housing.

Help Hub Responds to Disaster
With the government shutdown and SNAP pause effective November 1 , Help Hub is poised to see neighbors who may be forced to make the difficult decision to use the funds they would normally spend on rent and utilities to buy food. st
Over 22,000 NHC residents could be affected (39% children, 10% have a disability, 29% seniors). We expect higher demands on emergency assistance programs effective immediately. We are committed to addressing this food access disaster and its consequences alongside our partners.

Healthcare Navigation
Connections continue to be made to healthy food resources, primary care, insurance options, specialty care & education. We are on track to serve over 400 people with healthcare assistance this year.
The majority of people who have received health navigation so far are Medicaid or Medicare recipients, or are uninsured.
Healthcare access and equity is a focus of NHC DHHS Community Health Improvement Plan. Having Healthcare Navigation in Help Hub during walk-in hours allows anyone to obtain knowledgable guidance and resources around health-related concerns. Time with Mary is well spent!

3.Donate Food: We welcome donations of non-perishable food items. Please refer to the flyer [right] for details on what to donate and where to drop off items.

Feast Down East will continue to provide their Fresh Bucks Double-up benefit for customers who have SNAP. Just show your EBT card and you will get $25 worth of fresh food from the Local Motive Mobile Farmers' Market!

Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC has an excellent food insecurity resource. This interactive map has network of over 700 pantries, no-cost markets, and meal sites searchable by open hours and location.

CCLCF has been awarded a $1 5 million grant from the NH Community Endowment to support the continued development of a Social Care Network with local Human Service organizations, building
on the success of the Healthy Opportunities Pilot!

What a spooktacular time our individuals from GHA Autism Supports had at the Special Olympics NHC Halloween Dance on October 26! The evening kicked off with some festive trick-ortreating fun, followed by a lively dance party filled with great music, costumes, and plenty of smiles. We provide legal services and support to protect low-income clients from unfair and predatory financial practices, allowing them to stay in their own homes. We take great pride in advocating for & representing our clients with the highest levels of professionalism & respect, particularly in their most difficult times of financial distress. Annually, on average, we serve 125 households The majority of our work is provided free of charge.
