The project involves the critical understanding of the crisis through a curatedimage archive and a written statement of examples of crisis.
It further delves into the dynamics of the crisis, its relationship with space and form, physically, symbiolically and strategically majorly focussing on the event and space.
The crisis analysed here is POVERTY around different parts of the world as a consequence of major factors like rapid urbanization and over-population contributing to the degradation of the development and economy of a country.
The investigation of this crisis involves its impact and effect on spatial arrangement or a whole space and the behaviour of user towards the upcoming difficulties through poverty and is mainly focussed on the clearance of slum dwellings.

CRISIS EXPLORATION
“SURFACE STATE.”
Focussing on the spatial consequence of the disaster acting in and on a space, architecture is used as a medium for disaster or crisis. It explores on how the crisis approaches, interacts and changes the spatial host using the attributes of architecture to demonstrate and codify crisis through representation in 2D and 3D. In the following content, a 2D exploration of this crisis is investigated through snapshots during a particular time period. The snapshots consist of before, during and after the crisis with a duration of a month in between each of them to observe the changes and attributes of each scenario with respect to spatial host.
Before slum clearance took place, the integrity of the slums in Kibera was maintained inspite of all the problems caused by the Rich through urbanization majorly. The presence of slums through the gradient of white to black displays the relationship between the rich context of kibera and the kibera slums.
PRE-CRISIS
The whole integrity of the slums in kibera is disrupted and interrupted due to the strike of urbanization. There is a division created amongst the slums causing changes in the movement of people from the slums to dwell outside the boundaries of the slums. Existence of slums begin to fade away due to the clearance taking place resulting in various movements of people from their land.
The disruption of the slums continues due to upcoming projects of the railways and highway running through the slums leading to further disintegration of the slums. Existence of slums begin to fade away due to the clearance taking place and the evacuated space is utilized by the rich for commercial purposes and projects. This causes the increase in movement of the people from the slums along the sides of the urban regions of kibera.
MID-CRISIS POST CRISIS
CRISIS EXPLORATION
“GRAPHIC STATE.”
The slums of Kibera are known for the number of schools and education camps present and the schools or education act as signifi cant feature amongst the people of the slums. During the slum clearance, few of the schools were spared from demolition as it served as an identity to the slums and children still attended the schools despite their disorientation from the slums.
Post this, people were witnessed to often return to the site to obtain their belongings, materials used for building their shelter and reside to rebuilding their informal settlements in the urban region of Kibera as most of the people from the slums are not fortunate enough to reside in the fomal housing while few of them are.
But there is a sense of spirit amongst the informal settlements which lacks majorly after the transformation occurs. The transference of materials and the migration of the people does not affect the identity of the area as it holds a significant value for the people.
The school was a node for INTERACTION to take place between everyone within the settlements while the water bodies acted as a source of INTEGRATION and unity through communication with the INFLUENCE of roads and railways to earn a living and for transportation.
DESIGN MANIFESTO
“DECODING THE MANIFESTO.”
Unanimity amongst diverse groups of people residing in a community is the most ideal character in any community. Living under different roofs and functioning as one big family. Segregation of spaces and individuals is converted to Integration between them. Absence of boundaries i.e., physical and virtual, between the spaces and the diverse groups must create opportunities to design and produce open and closed spaces by the individuals utilizing the space. Sense of ownership and belongingness occurs. An unswerving community is thus created.

Keeping the node (social node) as a constant in both the settlements, the surroundings are explored as the kibera slums considered the schools to be of great significance compared to their settlements. There is a transition of elements to a small extent (social character) into the formal housing during the exploration as this character is brought along with the people involuntarily. The character and value of the demolished slum areas are retained due to the utilization of thoseareas by the people.

CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS
“SITE ANALOGY INTEGRATED WITH MANIFESTO.”
Depending upon the user’s accessibility to the site, major focal points, Types of users in the surrounding areas, the elements of the site can be used for functions from the attributes of the manifesto. Movement paths are considered significant as it is an important element in the informal settlements. This feature is kept as a basis for the design approach so as to emphasize on the routes of movement, free or obstructed depending upon the function and accessibility of the space.
From the site analysis, the main focal points and access to the site along with the movement of users play a major role in the function breakdown.
The attributes of thr manifesto along with the elements from 2D and 3D explorations give rise to the brief which involves the typology of this proposal and the function breakdown along with their areas. There is a wide range of concept ideas to develop a sense of community spirit which is completely loast in the site,Al Jaddaf Waterfront, Dubai. Though buildings are designed in a way to inculcate togetherness, there is a huge deficiency of unanimity. Instilling and developing these characteristics through design is the major objective.
A community according to the manifesto is described as an integrated society which involves a relationship between the users and the spaces and their interrelationship.

Interaction at a level involving pedestrain users as well as users from the neighboruing areas to access through public connections leading to INTEGRATION of users.
Diverse engagement of user groups expanding across public access points until the site itself leading to immersive INTERACTION.
Mixed involvement at an intimate level amongst the user groups utilizing the space, thereby having an INFLUENCE over the activities/spaces to be built.
The brief initiates the idealogy of Workshop, Production space and Agora as the site acts as a point of contact directly between the end user and the designers. Community spaces are integrated into the area breakdown to expose a larger amount of interior and exterior area within the site.
AGORA + WORKSHOP + PRODUCTION SPACE
NATURE + EDUCATION + SOURCE OF LIVING
WATER BODY + SCHOOL + RAILWAY
The above discovery emphasis on the function of the space as it serves the purpose of cultivating unianimity on the site similar to how it used to take place amongst the informal settlements of Kibera.
FORM EXPERIMENTATION
This segment involves a series of experiments on the forms based on the spatial correlations established previously. A range of 3 forms developed through the stages of design shown below.
SPACES OF DISASTER
FORM ARTICULATION
Stages of development : Form 1
This involves the breakdown of the spaces and arrangment in such a way that the form produces an integrated space where the workshop, production space, and agora are collaborated for the smooth transition of spaces for the users.
Stages of development : Form 2
FORM ARTICULATION
This involves the breakdown of the spaces and arrangment in such a way that the form produces modular spaces which is a combination of the workshop space, agora and production and this would allow smooth transition of spaces where the function of spaces could interchange while module remains the same. This has great potential to multiply according to the needs of the user.
This segment involves explorations conducted on the functional development based on spatial relationships established with respect to the architectonics discovered from the manifesto. The arrangement of Workshop, Agora and the Active zone are based on configurations deduced from the User-Function-Space relationships tested with the architectonics to obtain the most suitable design approach.
The Workshop, Active zone and the Agora , respectively, are tested to obtain spatial relationships between the three attributes described in terms of USER, SPACE and FUNCTION as these compliment the idea of the three I s (Inflence, interact and integrate). The User-function relationship leads to interaction which depends on the users of the space in a particular function (public,semi-public and private). The Function-space relationship is best suited since integration depends on the transition of a particular function into a different space. The User - space relationship gives a sense of ownership(influence) which depends on the influence of the user groups over the space to personalize it. USER - FUNCTION
LAYERS
Layering of the spaces is appropriate as it is in context to the site and surrounding elements of the site, such as the bridge which crea ed a division in the layers of accessibility to the site. Respecting the presence of the bridge which creates the divide , the layering approach from the explorations abides o the existing site conditions appropriately

DESIGN ADVANCEMENT
“STAGES
OF DEVELOPMENT IN THE DESIGN”
This segment provides the different stages of development of the design to provide an insight and gradual growth and process of the design. The structural framework is provided to accomodate the self-building concept including the self built housing units and the self built community structures under the supervision of professionals and the guidance provided from the learning workshop. However, the form firstly arrived on the site over which the structure is placed.
DESIGN ANALYSIS
“SPATIAL + ENVIRONMENTAL STUDY”
These spatial arrangements formed from the design development was tested throught a physical model to understand the functioning system of the form on the site with the context. After the design developement, it is essential to support and test the form in terms of the environmental relationship so as to figure the orientation of the functions within the form as well as on the exteriors.
RADIATION ANALYSIS
The analysis is carried out during summer and winter months to identify the suitable and comfortable timings for building and public activies in the open spaces.
SHADOW ANALYSIS
The analysis is carried out during summer and winter months to identify the areas of maximum shade and least shade to determine the spatial positioning and arrangement of the spaces internally and externally.
Overlapping the layers to obtain the most and least sun-drenched regions with respect to the design and facade.

Existing site features are utilised by the Agora. The agora is although surrounded by contrast of semi-private functions including storage, warehouse on one side of the site. Dorms housing is situated in the ground floor along with a dining space , cafe and a library where the dorms is mostly focussed for the labour of the neighbouring construction sites , staff members and other user groups in need of affordable housing. The presence of the semi-private spaces indulge in increasing the concentration of gathering in the public open spaces (agora).

The dorms housing are for the focussed groups (construction workers, staff members) due to the domination of these user groups on the site and in the neighbouring sites where 40% of Jaddaf is undergoing construction. So in order to solve the issues of transport (long travel), insufficient facilities and congested accomodations mainly, the dorms housing is provided to them and is placed on the zone which is most accessed by the focussed groups. The building space is the main interactive space in the first floor where the level of interaction is at its peak involving all the user groups tp exchange information on self-building and organizing event and activities for the public. The learning spaces are within the authority of the special professionals who make weekly visits in order to guide and spread awareness on the funcitoning of self-built community through workshops, lectures, activities, live projects, to promote the concept of self-building in Dubai.

The second floor comprises of events and activities of transposition as there is high level of influence in these spaces by the user groups (both indoors and outdoors). This floor mainly involves activities by the user groups and keeps changing according to the decisions made by the integration and interaction between users. The transition of functions in the active ingress space is similar to the idealogy of the alleyways of the slums where the activities keep changing as interaction occurs at a very personal level. The nature of the transition could be witnessed from a completely informal space (ingress) to the formal space (exhibition) where the double height spaces are used as two levels so as to play with the levels of interaction and influence as well.
DETAILED DESIGN
The major concept of the project is the self build approach and this section focusses on the formation of units, growth and placement of these units and the detailed design potential of one such unit.
Each living unit can expand both vertically and horizontally. The arrangement of the kitchen and living units creates void spaces that can serve as either shared outdoor areas or private outdoor spaces, depending on user needs. For an example of a living unit layout, consider the Type 2 L-shaped living unit shown above, which illustrates furniture placement, including one bathing unit and a designated bed space.
The activities and functions taking place within the site determine the concentration of users and intensity of the community and is described in the section. The process of the formatiion of community building or the concentration of the activities and involvement is analysed.
EXTENSIVE DESIGN
“DESIGN
ASPECTS BASED ON MATERIALITY”
STEEL CHASIS
The major concept of the project is the self build approach and this section focusses on the formation of units, growth and placement of these units and the detailed design potential of one such unit.
MANIFE TATION
The framework of the design consists of steel columns supported by joinery and holds the form within the structure. This framework is exposed so as to witness the materiality and enhance the aesthetics of the project which gives users a sense of rawness in the experience of the design journey. Due to its exposure, intumescent paint is used as a coating on the steel frames to avoid any fire mishaps and for fire protection.
MANIFESTATION
The vertical structural mullions are fixed and secured at the base of the windows and horizontal transoms are then added followed by the glazing panels and vents in the completed grid. Large spans at the centre dictate a strong supporting structure in order to accommodate the wind load and self weight, therefore an aluminium add-on system is proposed fixed on steel mullions and transoms.
The wooden cladding system comprises of flexible steel joints holding the cladding where the cladding is of the material Accoya Acetylated wood. Accoya® is the world’s leading high technology long life wood and one of the most sustainable building materials. The advantages provided by this material makes it the most respected ecolabels for the sustainable wood it provides. To avoid any disadvantages cause by wood in construction in terms of reating water content one such concept evolved which is known as the Acetylation of the wood. The process of acetylation could be described as subjecting a softwood to vinegar, which turns it into a hardwood by preventing the cells in the wood from being able to absorb water which increases the longevity of the material.
