CRISIS : POVERTY SLUM CLEARANCE

ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 7&8

THESIS INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

LOCATION : JADDAF WATERFRONT, DUBAI

PROJECT VISION

The project involves the critical understanding of the crisis through a curatedimage archive and a written statement of examples of crisis.

It further delves into the dynamics of the crisis, its relationship with space and form, physically, symbiolically and strategically majorly focussing on the event and space.

The crisis analysed here is POVERTY around different parts of the world as a consequence of major factors like rapid urbanization and over-population contributing to the degradation of the development and economy of a country.

The investigation of this crisis involves its impact and effect on spatial arrangement or a whole space and the behaviour of user towards the upcoming difficulties through poverty and is mainly focussed on the clearance of slum dwellings.

The second floor comprises of events and activities of transposition as there is high level of influence in these spaces by the user groups (both indoors and outdoors). The transition of functions in the active ingress space is similar to the idealogy of the alleyways of the slums where the activities keep changing as interaction occurs at a very personal level. The nature of the transition could be witnessed from a completely informal space (ingress) to the formal space (exhibition) where the double height spaces are used as two levels so as to play with the levels of interaction and influence as well.

This floor is located at a level below the bridge (same level as the jameel arts center) is majorly accessible by the pedestrains from the neighbouring communities and this involves gathering of people with the different functions taking place in the agora. Existing site features are utilised by the Agora. The agora is although surrounded by contrast of semi-private functions including storage, warehouse on one side of the site.

1

The dorms housing are for the focussed groups (construction workers, staff members) due to the domination of these user groups on the site and in the neighbouring sites where 40% of Jaddaf is undergoing construction. The building space is the main interactive space in the first floor where the level of interaction is at its peak involving all the user groups tp exchange information on self-building and organizing event and activities for the public.

The framework of the design consists of steel columns supported by joinery and holds the form within the structure. This framework is exposed so as to witness the materiality and enhance the aesthetics of the project which gives users a sense of rawness in the experience of the design journey. Due to its exposure, intumescent paint is used as a coating on the steel frames to avoid any fire mishaps and for fire protection.

CURTAIN WALL - STICK SYSTEM

The vertical structural mullions are fixed and secured at the base of the windows and horizontal transoms are then added followed by the glazing panels and vents in the completed grid. Large spans at the centre dictate a strong supporting structure in order to accommodate the wind load and self weight, therefore an aluminium add-on system is proposed fixed on steel mullions and transoms.

WOODEN CLADDING SYSTEM

The wooden cladding system comprises of flexible steel joints holding the cladding where the cladding is of the material Accoya Acetylated wood. Accoya® is the world’s leading high technology long life wood and one of the most sustainable building materials. The advantages provided by this material makes it the most respected ecolabels for the sustainable wood it provides. To avoid any disadvantages cause by wood in construction in terms of reating water content , one such concept evolved which is known as the Acetylation of the wood. The process of acetylation could be described as subjecting a softwood to vinegar, which turns it into a hardwood by preventing the cells in the wood from being able to absorb water which increases the longevity of the material.

DESIGN FORMATION AND ANALYSIS

This segment provides the different stages of development of the design, starting from form articulation and establishing spatial relationships, to provide an insight and gradual growth and process of the design. The structural framework is provided to accomodate the self-building concept including the self built housing units and the self built community structures under the supervision of professionals and the guidance provided from the learning workshop. However, the form firstly arrived on the site over which the structure is placed. This is then followed by functional zoning, analysis carried out with the form on site which includes both shadow and radiation analysis, user concentration and community development illustrated below.

Stages of development : Form 1

This involves the breakdown of the spaces and arrangment in such a way that the form produces an integrated space where the workshop, production space, and agora are collaborated for the smooth transition of spaces for the users.

05. Design phases workflow

LAYERS OF ZONING

Layering of the spaces is appropriate as it is in context to the site and surrounding elements of the site, such as the bridge which created a division in the layers of accessibility to the site. Respecting the presence of the bridge which creates the divide , the layering approach from the explorations abides to the existing site conditions appropriately

STAGES OF DESIGN ARTICULATION

The activities and functions taking place within the site determine the concentration of users and intensity of the community and is described in the section. The process of the formatiion of community building or the concentration of the activities and involvement is analysed.

DETAILED DESIGN

The major concept of the project is the self build approach and this section focusses on the formation of units, growth and placement of these units and the detailed design potential of one such unit. “DEVELOPMENT OF SELF BUILT

DETAILED DESIGN OF SELF BUILT UNIT

This section presents the design of self-built units, reflecting the physical characteristics of Kibera's slum areas to foster a sense of belonging and ownership in the new space, similar to informal settlements. The arrangement of units and the spatial design layout are illustrated diagrammatically below.

LIVING UNIT - 25 SQM

Each living unit can expand both vertically and horizontally. The arrangement of the kitchen and living units creates void spaces that can serve as either shared outdoor areas or private outdoor spaces, depending on user needs. For an example of a living unit layout, consider the Type 2 L-shaped living unit shown above, which illustrates furniture placement, including one

unit and a designated bed space.

The core concept of the design focuses on seamless circulation between spaces and accessibility for various user groups, including public, private, and semi-private areas. The design emerged through the strategic use of voids and spaces, enhancing the overall user experience of the building.

The building's structure merges modularity and deconstructivism while integrating sustainability. Its external form is primarily influenced by the seamless integration of public and private spaces. Given that the program is designed for a government facility—specifically a crime and forensics department—maintaining a balance between public and private accessibility is crucial.
