PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

building Connections, Celebrating Progress

Esteemed Members and SME Stakeholders,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the second issue of SME Connect. Following the encouraging reception of our inaugural edition, it is clear that this magazine has struck a chord as a platform to inform, inspire, and connect our vibrant SME community. I thank each of you who have shared feedback and contributed your stories—it is this sense of ownership and participation that will make SME Connect grow into a truly valuable voice for us all.

In this issue, we reflect on two milestone events that underscore the Association’s mission of combining business excellence with community impact.

The first is the SME International Charity Golf 2025, held at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club. More than 128 golfers, including distinguished guests and industry leaders, came together not only for competition but for a cause. The success of this event is a reminder that SMEs are not just economic drivers; we are also contributors to the broader community, extending our reach beyond the marketplace to where it matters most—supporting people and making a difference.

The second is the much-anticipated Platinum Business Awards (PBA) 2025. Recognised as Malaysia’s most prestigious SME award, the PBA stands as a beacon of achievement, honouring innovation, resilience, and excellence. The nationwide roadshows were energising members and creating opportunities for engagement. These gatherings were more than briefings—they were spaces where ideas were exchanged, collaborations were sparked, and SMEs gained the visibility they deserve. This issue proudly features the announcement of the PBA 2025 winners—an early celebration ahead of the awards gala.

The Platinum Business Awards, now in its 23rd year, symbolises honour, distinction, and credibility, recognising exceptional leadership and entrepreneurial excellence. Receiving this award is not the end, but the beginning of a new journey toward greater brand strength, leadership development, and business success. As our Association continues to grow, we look forward to even more nominations in the years ahead and to elevating the PBA’s recognition across the AsiaPacific region. The awards night in October promises to be an inspiring celebration of all that SMEs contribute to our economy and society.

As we look ahead, I am reminded of the core values that drive our Association: connection, growth, and empowerment. Through SME Connect, through our flagship events, and through the daily work of our chapters, we continue to strengthen the ecosystem in which SMEs can thrive.

Stay engaged, stay connected, and continue to participate. Every contribution strengthens our community and moves Malaysian SMEs forward.

Together, let us continue to chart a future of shared prosperity for SMEs across Malaysia.

Sincerely,

From Dispensing to Consulting: Marcus Chew

Empowers Malaysian SMEs

Marcus Chew, the visionary founder and CEO of MR Group and MR Academy, began his career in an unlikely field: it was behind the counter of a community pharmacy.

There, he performed every task imaginable, from stocking shelves and serving customers to opening and closing the store.

Yet, it was within this structured world of healthcare that he first encountered the foundational elements of business that would define his future.

“I actually started from the ground— not as a business owner, but as an employee,” Chew recounts, painting a vivid picture of his early days.

This hands-on immersion provided him with an unparalleled understanding of the entire business cycle, from purchasing to sales, customer service to operational efficiency.

His progression within the pharmacy group was swift and multifaceted, moving from store supervisor to roles in IT, operations, marketing, and eventually Human Resources (HR), overseeing hundreds of staff.

Finding His Purpose

A successful business transformation within the pharmacy group proved to be a pivotal moment, not only charting Chew’s new calling but also cementing his standing among retail SMEs.

From dispensing medicine to prescribing business growth, Marcus Chew has built Malaysia’s largest retail academy and consultancy. Discover how his unique journey is transforming the landscape for local SMEs.

Soon, friends and fellow business owners, particularly those running retail shops, started asking him, “Marcus, how did you do it? Can you teach me?”

This led to a profound realisation for Chew: what seemed like common sense

to him, honed through years of practical experience, was an overwhelming hurdle for many SME owners. “Some even considered giving up entirely,” he recalls. “I started helping them, sharing what I knew—and I noticed a pattern: they were all facing the same challenges, but no one was there to guide them.”

It was in these interactions that Chew discovered his true purpose. He saw a significant void in the market: a need for someone who could genuinely understand and address the struggles of SME retailers, someone who had walked in their shoes and could offer practical, real-world solutions.

This realisation marked his transition into the training and consulting space, transforming it from a mere career into a profound mission.

Prescription for Retail Success

The diverse skill set Chew acquired in his pharmacy days, though seemingly disparate, forms the bedrock of his consulting philosophy today.

As he elaborates, “Because I’ve walked through each department myself, I don’t just speak from theory—I bring hands-on, practical solutions that retail owners can apply immediately.”

His journey through various departments at the pharmacy group was a masterclass in holistic business management.

As an IT Manager, he spearheaded system transformations, teaching him systems thinking. His time in operations involved opening new outlets, building Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and improving stock management, instilling a deep appreciation for structure and efficiency.

As Marketing Director, he developed campaigns from scratch, honing his creativity and customer insight.

Finally, as HR Director, he built internal systems and training programmes for talent development, cultivating his ability to lead and develop people.

“Each of these roles gave me a different lens to understand business,” Chew reflects.

This multifaceted experience allows him to connect deeply with SME owners, offering solutions that are not only practical but also resonate with their daily struggles.

It’s this foundation of real-world experience, built from the ground up, that

defines his unique consulting approach, empowering retailers to grow with both structure and heart.

bridging the Gap

The core vision that drove the establishment of MR Group and, subsequently, MR Academy, was simple yet urgent: to help Malaysia’s traditional retailers transform and thrive in an increasingly competitive market.

Chew points out a critical disparity: large retail chains possess abundant resources—talent, budget, sophisticated systems, and structured training—while SME retailers often find themselves at a disadvantage.

“Many of them are hardworking, passionate entrepreneurs, but they lack the business knowledge, structured skills, and experience needed to grow or adapt,” he states.

The challenges for traditional retailers are compounding: digital disruption, shifting consumer behaviour, and escalating operational costs are

exerting immense pressure.

“Some are barely surviving,” Chew observes. It was this urgent need that compelled him to establish MR Academy. His conviction is unwavering: “I truly believe that these business owners deserve support, guidance, and a path to transformation.”

They need more than just motivation; they require practical strategies, robust systems, and empathetic guidance from someone who truly understands their struggles.

MR Group’s mission, Chew says, is to bridge the chasm between real-world experience and effective retail education, empowering Malaysian SMEs to build stronger, smarter, and more sustainable businesses.

From Vision to Leadership

Chew took a calculated risk by officially launching MR Academy, a Mandarin-based retail academy that focuses on delivering practical, ground-level knowledge, in April 2022. “Honestly, I wasn’t sure if the market

would respond positively,” he admits. The response, however, was overwhelmingly positive, revealing a profound hunger for actionable retail education in their native language.

From its inception, MR Academy has adhered to three core values: accompaniment, real-world strategies, and implementation.

This commitment extends beyond course completion, with consistent weekly

online support sessions offered.

“That consistency comes from our passion for education and our belief in lifelong learning,” Chew affirms.

The academy proudly received the Malaysia Best Retail Management Training Award in 2023 and has achieved a remarkable milestone of 13,131 students with an astounding 391% revenue growth in just three years.

These figures represent not just numerical expansion but a significant increase in impact, which continues to propel them forward.

The ultimate reward, he notes, is witnessing a student achieve a breakthrough in their business, transforming a struggling operation into a thriving enterprise, achieving over 100% growth in revenue and profitability.

For Chew, every successful transformation signifies more than just business growth.

“It means contributing to the economy, creating more job opportunities, and helping people regain confidence in their future,” he states, emphasising the profound personal and societal impact of his work.

Navigating Challenges

Every entrepreneurial journey faces hurdles, and Chew’s was no exception. In MR Academy’s early days, he encountered significant scepticism, with some dismissing him as “just another ‘guru’ trying to sell dreams.”

His response was simple yet powerful: “what matters is not what others say, but the results we deliver.”

By focusing on serving every client with sincerity and achieving tangible results, positive word-of-mouth spread, validating his mission.

The crucial lesson learned? “Ignore the distractions. Stay focused on your mission, and serve your customers like they’re your parents—with care, respect, and dedication.”

For any Malaysian SME currently struggling or looking to scale, Chew offers powerful, actionable advice: “Go back to the basics, and don’t do it alone.”

He adds, “You’re not failing because you’re not good enough—you’re just missing the right system and guidance,” underscoring MR Group’s commitment to being a trusted partner, empowering SMEs as enablers of profound and lasting impact in the Malaysian retail sector.

The MR Academy Advantage: Real-World Solutions for Malaysian SME Retailers

At the heart of MR Group’s impact is MR Academy, Malaysia’s largest retail academy and consultancy, built on a powerful philosophy: 20% theory, 80% practical application.

This isn’t just a slogan; it’s a commitment to equipping SME retailers with actionable strategies they can implement immediately to transform their businesses.

B EYOND T E x TBOOKS

What makes MR Academy truly stand out is its deep understanding of the Malaysian retail landscape.

Founder Marcus Chew isn’t just a teacher; he’s an active retailer himself. “I don’t just teach — I apply what I teach,” he explains.

This ensures that every module, every piece of advice, is grounded in current market realities and constantly updated to reflect the latest trends, from AI integration to digital transformation.

They speak the same language as their students, literally and professionally, having walked the path of daily struggles faced by SME owners.

For traditional brick-and-mortar SMEs, the digital shift can be overwhelming. MR Academy simplifies this journey by breaking it down into manageable, practical steps:

1. Data-Driven Mindset: Starting with in-store membership systems to collect and analyse customer behaviour.

2. Offline Marketing Mastery: Strengthening physical store performance before venturing fully online.

3. O2O (Online-to-Offline) Strategies: Leveraging social media and digital platforms to drive foot traffic to stores.

4. OMO (Online-Merge-Offline) Integration: Seamlessly syncing customer data, sales, and marketing across both physical and digital channels using cloud-based solutions.

They don’t just introduce digital tools; they help SMEs connect the dots between digital strategies and fundamental retail operations, ensuring businesses are future-proofed without losing their core strengths.

S MARTER, N OT Ju ST B I gg ER

MR Academy actively challenges the pervasive misconception among SMEs that “we’re small, so we can’t compete,” teaching that success isn’t about having corporate-level resources but about being “smart” in strategy.

They address common pitfalls like misguided bulk purchasing, suboptimal location choices driven by fear of competition, or damaging price wars.

Instead, they guide owners to build strong foundational business strategies, from customer positioning to team structure and marketing, through continuous coaching and real-life case studies.

Both the group and the academy’s ultimate value proposition lies in delivering real, experience-driven solutions that go back to the unglamorous, yet crucial, building blocks of retail.

They equip SME owners with the foundational knowledge and mindset for long-term success by focusing on five core pillars (see Infographic).

This holistic five-pillar approach isn’t about quick fixes but about genuine business transformation, empowering Malaysian SMEs to not only survive but truly thrive and expand in today’s competitive market.

On 25 March, SME Malaysia held a courtesy meeting with UCTC UPM Bahagian Pengembangan Pertanian at Universiti Putra Malaysia in Serdang, Selangor to explore collaborative efforts in hydroponics and mushroom farming.

SME Malaysia has entered into a strategic partnership with Taylor’s University’s BizPod through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 7 April at Taylor’s University in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

The ceremony marked a shared commitment to support Malaysia’s next generation of entrepreneurs.

“Entrepreneurship is about creativity, resilience, and solving real challenges,”

Pek said in his welcome address. “This partnership with SME Malaysia will provide students with the tools and opportunities to thrive in an entrepreneurial ecosystem.” This initiative promises to strengthen Malaysia’s startup landscape and nurture a new generation of business leaders.

Trailblazer’s Night 5.0: Honouring Visionaries

SME Malaysia once again hosted a successful Trailblazer’s Night on 6 May.

Held at Confetti KL, Trailblazer’s Night 5.0 was an inspiring celebration of innovation, leadership, and bold entrepreneurship in Malaysia’s SME sector.

The event brought together a dynamic mix of entrepreneurs, investors, and

policymakers for an evening filled with meaningful conversations, deal-making, and powerful connections.

More than just a gathering, Trailblazer’s Night offered exclusive growth insights, collaboration opportunities, and a platform to showcase brands to the right audience.

Attendees engaged in high-value discussions, fostering partnerships and

sharing resources within a thriving ecosystem dedicated to SME success.

The much-anticipated event emphasised the impact SMEs make beyond economic contributions — through creativity, perseverance, and vision.

For business leaders ready to break barriers and expand their influence, this was the place to be.

Malaysia–Cambodia Trade Ties Strengthened

SME Malaysia joins forces with key partners in the Malaysia–Cambodia Business Association to boost trade, investment, and SME growth between the two countries.

The Malaysia Cambodia Business Association (MCBA) signed memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with 20 Malaysian associations, including SME Malaysia, to explore overseas markets, starting with Cambodia.

The one-year renewable MoUs are expected to bring in at least 100 Malaysian companies from sectors such as fertilisers, engineering, electrical, and construction.

Held on 13 May at Menara MATRADE, Kuala Lumpur, the signing ceremony also marked the official launch of the Malaysia–Cambodia Trade & Investment Mission 2025, a key initiative aimed at strengthening bilateral business ties and regional collaboration.

MCBA president Datuk Seri Dr Ricky Yaw said the strategic partnership marks a milestone in Malaysia’s economic diplomacy, enabling Malaysian businesses to expand beyond domestic borders while attracting foreign investment back to Malaysia.

“With the combined strength of these associations, we can move more effectively across borders,” he said.

The alliance will focus on fostering innovation, facilitating technology transfer, and supporting sustainable growth aligned with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.

Discussions are underway to establish a Joint Trade Committee to further explore opportunities in trade, investment, and

Strengthening Export Capabilities with MATRADE

SME Malaysia paid a courtesy visit to Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) at its Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur on 9 May.

The delegate was warmly welcomed by Deputy Director Shah Nizam Ahmad who highlighted MATRADE’s pivotal role in supporting Malaysian SMEs’ global expansion.

He also spotlighted programmes such as eTRADE, which equips SMEs with digital tools, and the Market Development Grant (MDG) that finances international marketing efforts.

As Malaysia accelerates digital transformation and export-led growth, initiatives like these are vital to ensuring our SMEs are not only ready for the global stage but leading it.

tourism between the two countries. Cambodia presents an attractive environment for SMEs due to relatively low entry barriers.

Yaw explained, “You can register a company with 100% foreign ownership. You don’t need a local partner, and you can set up a business overnight. These are key advantages for SMEs.”

The simplified regulatory framework and lower costs make Cambodia a promising market for Malaysian SMEs seeking international expansion.

The Malaysia–Cambodia Investment and Trade Mission, scheduled for June 26–29 in Phnom Penh, will be the first major project under this alliance.

SME Malaysia encourages its members and partners to participate actively in the mission to seize new business opportunities and strengthen regional ties.

Unlocking Financial Opportunities

SME Malaysia hosted an exclusive SJPP Sharing Session on 9 May, featuring Syarikat Jaminan Pembiayaan Perniagaan (SJPP) Senior Manager, Khairul Ashikin Md Yasin.

Khairul Ashikin provided valuable insights into Government Guarantee Schemes designed to help SMEs overcome financing challenges, especially those lacking sufficient collateral.

The session highlighted the MADANI 2 scheme, which offers up to RM20 million in financing per company with an 80% government guarantee.

Priority sectors under MADANI 2 include the green economy, halal industry, healthcare, and high-tech sectors—key areas driving Malaysia’s economic growth.

SMEs were encouraged to tap into these opportunities through participating

financial institutions to expand their businesses sustainably and responsibly.

SME Malaysia extends gratitude to SJPP for their ongoing support and dedication to empowering Malaysian SMEs with practical financial solutions.

CIFTIS Malaysia 2025 Showcases AI and Digital Growth

SME Malaysia proudly supported the CIFTIS Malaysia 2025 Promotion Event held on 25 April at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.

Hosted by the Beijing International Trade in Services Center, the forum focused on the theme “Digital Future | Connected Nations.”

The event featured leading voices from Malaysia and China, including representatives from Alibaba Cloud, Honor, Bank of China, and Federation of Malaysia Chinese Commerce Association, fostering cross-border collaboration in the AI and digital economy sectors.

Connecting with Students at INTI Career Fair

On 1 October, SME Malaysia participated in the INTI Career & Internship Fair 2025, held at INTI International University & Colleges in Subang, Selangor.

The event provided an excellent platform for the association to connect with students and share insights about its role in supporting and strengthening the SME ecosystem.

Through the fair, SME Malaysia also introduced various career and internship opportunities within the organisation, encouraging young talents to explore the dynamic world of small and medium enterprises.

In line with its commitment to nurturing future leaders, SME Malaysia announced that it is now open for internship placements for 2026.

PbA 2025 Roadshow Inspires SMEs Nationwide

The grand launch of the Platinum Business Awards (PBA) 2025 marked the start of a nationwide roadshow to identify and inspire highpotential SMEs across Malaysia.

The first stop was held in Johor Bahru on 22 May, drawing over 200

entrepreneurs, business leaders, and innovators to the Austin International Convention Centre (AICC).

Since then, the roadshow has travelled to key cities including Melaka, Labuan, Kota Kinabalu, Miri, and Kuching, building momentum and encouraging SMEs nationwide to share

their success stories.

Each stop reinforced the core values of the PBA—leadership, integration, and sustainability—while strengthening SME Malaysia’s engagement with local business communities.

Nominations for the Platinum Business Awards 2025 closed on 7 August.

Shine bright Pink October Run Lights Up KL Tower

More than 3,000 runners turned the Kuala Lumpur Tower precinct into a sea of pink on 11 October for the “Shine Bright Pink October Run 2025”, a large-scale event dedicated to celebrating women’s strength, health, and unity.

Jointly organised by the SME Malaysia’s National Women Entrepreneurs Bureau and Tourism Bureau, the run carried the theme “For Her. For Us. For Hope.” and marked the first time such an event was held at the iconic KL Tower.

Deputy Minister of Communications YB Teo Nie Ching officiated the event, commending the organisers for promoting women’s empowerment and leadership.

In her address, Organising Chairperson Kate Yong said the run symbolised “an awakening of women’s strength and spirit — a reminder that everyone has light within, and through every step, we let that light shine.”

SME Malaysia National President Dr. Chin Chee Seong thanked sponsors, partners, and participants for their support, noting that the event successfully blended community spirit with a meaningful cause.

A highlight of the morning was a RM10,000 contribution presented to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia in support of cancer awareness and patient care initiatives.

The scenic 5KM run concluded with prize presentations, and a lucky draw — a vibrant celebration of unity, resilience, and hope for women and communities nationwide.

SME International Charity Golf 2025 Drives Giving and Camaraderie

SME Malaysia’s inaugural Charity Golf event teed off with purpose at Kota Permai Golf & Country Club, blending sport, networking, and philanthropy in a meaningful one-day tournament.

The event that drew 128 golfers was graced by the Deputy Minister of Digital, Datuk Wilson Ugak anak Kumbong, who also took part in the tournament.

In his message featured in the tournament programme book, SME Malaysia National President Dr Chin Chee Seong said the event successfully brought together business leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals, fostering a spirit of camaraderie, competition, and charitable giving.

“Our sincere gratitude goes to all participants and sponsors who supported this special cause. Their involvement not

only helped us raise funds for charitable initiatives but also strengthened international business relations across ASEAN,” he added.

Among the tournament’s key sponsors were Wheelcorp Premium, Kingsman Marketing, JSM Advisory, Huawei Malaysia, and many others.

Their generous contributions enabled SME Malaysia to donate RM20,000 to four deserving charities: Persatuan Kebajikan Kasih OKU Selangor, Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home, Persatuan Kebajikan Dharmam Thalai Kakum, and Persatuan Shenpen Malaysia.

The SME International Charity Golf 2025 not only reinforced bonds within the SME community but also underscored the association’s ongoing commitment to giving back—on and off the fairway.
