Associated with longevity, immortality, prosperity, and good fortune, peaches have occupied a central role in Chinese visual culture for centuries, appearing throughout imperial decorative arts as auspicious symbols intended to bring blessings into the home. Particularly celebrated is the motif of the “nine peaches” — a subject deeply rooted in Chinese symbolism, where the number nine traditionally represents completeness, eternity, and imperial power. Together, the imagery forms a powerful wish for long life, abundance, and enduring prosperity.
This large and visually striking famille rose vase embodies that rich symbolic tradition with remarkable decorative presence. The elegant ovoid body is richly painted with large ripened peaches hanging from twisting branches, accompanied by delicate blossoms and fluttering bats — another auspicious symbol in Chinese culture, associated with happiness and good fortune due to the linguistic similarity between the words for “bat” and “blessing.”
The vivid famille rose palette, with its soft pinks, greens, and warm enamel tones, reflects the decorative sophistication that made these porcelains so admired both within China and internationally during the late Qing Dynasty and Republic period. The scale of the vase further enhances its impact, transforming it from a functional vessel into a commanding decorative object intended to be admired within an interior.
Displaying traces of age and use consistent with its history, including minor wear, small chips, and light hairline cracks to the base, the vase nevertheless retains the richness and visual vitality that make these symbolic peach vases so enduringly desirable among collectors of Chinese porcelain.

The ovoid body rising to a tall cylindrical neck with a slightly everted rim, decorated around the exterior with large ripe peaches and leaves issuing from gnarled branches, interspersed with flying bats and white and pink blossoms. Once part of a temple setting, this head of Vishnu would have presided quietly over a sacred space—its gaze not outward, but inward, inviting reflection rather than attention. In medieval India, such sculptures were not conceived as decoration, but as living embodiments of the divine, anchoring ritual, belief, and daily life within stone.
Vishnu, the preserver, is here rendered with a calm authority that transcends time. The heavy-lidded eyes, gently lowered, suggest a state of eternal composure; the subtle curve of the lips conveys neither emotion nor expression, but balance. Framed by elongated ears and crowned by an intricately carved headdress, the figure moves beyond portraiture into something more enduring—an ideal, held in form.
Carved in sandstone during the 11th or 12th century, at a time of remarkable artistic and architectural achievement in North India, the sculpture reflects a culture in which devotion and craftsmanship were inseparable. Though separated from its original context, the work retains its presence—its surface marked by age, its expression unchanged.
Today, such a piece enters a different kind of space. Removed from the temple, it becomes an object of contemplation in its own right—bringing with it not only centuries of history, but a quiet, grounding force. For the collector, it offers more than rarity: it offers permanence, a work that does not follow time, but exists beyond it.

The head of Vishnu is exquisite ly worked and displays a serene expression, characterised by almondshaped eyes with heavy lids beneath elegantly arched brows, and full lips forming a subtle smile. The face is flanked by elongated ears with circular earrings; above finely arranged hair he wears a tall, elaborately worked crown, a kiritamukuta, richly decorated with two friezes of con fronted rearing horses connected by garlands, the carving deeply un dercut and boldly modelled in high relief. Tea has long been an art form rooted in philosophy, ritual, and human connection. In East Asia, the sharing of tea became a reflection of harmony, humility, and presence—an appreciation of beauty not in perfection, but in impermanence and authenticity. At the center of this tradition stands the tea bowl: an object meant not only to be used, but to be felt, contemplated, and remembered.
This auction‘s selection of Korean and Japanese tea ceramics reflects the remarkable breadth and subtlety of this tradition across centuries. From delicate Korean celadon bowls of the Goryeo dynasty to powerful Japanese Raku, Karatsu, Shino, Hagi, and Oribe wares of the Momoyama and Edo periods, these objects embody a philosophy in which imperfection, spontaneity, and use are embraced rather than concealed.
Many of the bowls reveal traces of centuries of appreciation—softly worn glazes, irregular forms shaped by hand rather than wheel, and carefully executed kintsugi repairs in gold lacquer, transforming damage into part of the object’s history. Far from diminishing their beauty, these restorations reflect the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi: the quiet appreciation of impermanence, asymmetry, and age. These works reflect the aesthetic ideals at the heart of the Japanese tea ceremony, where utility and philosophy become one.
Particularly notable are the Raku bowls bearing seals and inscriptions connected to successive generations of the esteemed Raku family, whose lineage has shaped Japanese tea culture since the 16th century.
Far beyond objects of use, these bowls carry centuries of philosophy, craftsmanship, and human presence within them. Their worn glazes, irregular forms, and quiet imperfections reflect the spirit of the tea ceremony itself—where beauty is found in transience, and where a simple bowl of tea becomes a moment of reflection, connection, and profound stillness.

Stoneware. H. 7.3 cm, D. 13 cm. The chawan, of han tsutsu-gata type, has a low cylindrical form set on a slightly irregular ring foot (wa kodai). The grey body is covered with a thick beige, crackled glaze through which a reddish-brown iron oxide ground shows. The base and foot are partially unglazed. The decoration shows on one side reddish-brown overlapping circles and on the other irregular intersecting lines. It is accompanied by a tomobako (original wooden box), the lid with a paper label inscribed “Shino chawan”. With traces of age and use.

Crafted from a hard stoneware body, it is fully covered in a crackled, slightly porous, mouse-grey glaze. The exterior is decorated with freely brushed white slip and motifs revealed through the grey glaze (sgraffito-style), featuring grasses, a net pattern, and trees on hills. Stoneware. H. 8 cm, D. 12 cm. The chawan is of tall, cylindrical form (han-tsutsugata) with vertical walls, set on a broad, rounded ring foot, the interior spirally turned. The light-coloured body is entirely covered with a matte, extremely thin whitish slip, over which is a slightly porous, crackled salmon-coloured glaze with areas of grey tonality and whitish clouding, leaving parts of the underside and the foot ring unglazed. Stoneware. H. 5.5 cm, D. 12 cm. The chawan, of baradai type, is of shallow form with vertical walls and a slightly constricted waist, set on a small, robust ring foot with an interior spiral turning. The rough, dark body is covered with a black glaze with scattered large pores, leaving the foot ring and a triangular area on the underside unglazed. The base bears a Raku seal which, despite its somewhat incomplete impression, can be identified as one of the official seals of Tannyu (1795–1854), who served as the 10th head of the Raku family from 1811 until his retirement in 1845. Instantly recognizable, the O-Yoroi became far more than battlefield protection — it evolved into a symbol of honour, authority, discipline, and the highly ritualised world of the samurai warrior. Even today, these armours remain among the most iconic and visually striking objects associated with Japan, admired for the way they unite sculpture, craftsmanship, design, and history into a single monumental form.
This complete example from the early Showa period captures that fascination perfectly. Standing approximately 150 cm high, the armour commands attention through its layered construction of iron, lacquered leather, textile, and silk. Every component was designed not only for defence, but also for movement, symbolism, and visual impact. The broad shoulder guards (sode), articulated kusazuri, armoured sleeves (kote), and black-lacquered thigh guards create the unmistakable silhouette that has defined the image of the samurai for centuries.
What makes samurai armour particularly compelling is the extraordinary balance between intimidation and beauty. The expressive Nara-style menpo face mask, complete with moustache and lacquered red interior, transforms the armour into something almost theatrical — a carefully constructed persona intended to inspire fear, authority, and psychological power before battle had even begun. At the same time, details such as the deep black lacquer, silk brocade cords, and elegant proportions reveal the refined aesthetic sensibility that lies at the heart of Japanese craftsmanship.
Complete with its matching armour chest (yoroibitsu) and display stand, the ensemble retains the ceremonial presence for which these objects have long been admired by collectors and museums alike. More than a historical artefact, it stands as a powerful representation of Japan’s warrior culture — where martial discipline, artistic refinement, and mythology became inseparably intertwined.
