HOMEOWNERS WANT THE WHOLE

BACKYARD RESORT

As homeowners continue investing in their outdoor spaces, deck builder and outdoor living influencer Jason Russell— better known throughout the industry as Dr. Decks—sees a market increasingly focused on quality materials, premium features, and creating a complete backyard experience.

From innovative framing products to outdoor kitchens and frameless glass railings, Russell says homeowners are thinking beyond the deck itself and looking at how every element contributes to the overall experience.

NEW FRAMING MATERIALS

One product category that has caught Russell’s attention this year is alternative framing materials.

He points to treated laminated veneer lumber (LVL) products, such as Pacific Wood Tech (PWT), as an example of where deck construction is headed.

“It’s man-made, so it’s straighter, it has

the same moisture content per piece, it doesn’t warp or twist or anything like that,” says Russell.

Unlike traditional lumber, treated LVL offers greater consistency and stability, reducing many of the challenges associated with conventional wood framing.

Russell says his company has already completed two projects using the product and is currently working on a third.

“We’re really liking the product because we can use conventional deck building tools to manipulate it and make it, and it’s just like using lumber, but it’s a better, more quality product.”

THE BACKYARD RESORT CONTINUES TO GROW

When it comes to consumer demand, Russell sees homeowners continuing to expand their vision for outdoor living.

Outdoor kitchens remain one of the strongest growth areas.

“Outdoor kitchens are hot,” he says.

“More people are wanting to integrate the whole cooking area.”

The trend extends well beyond traditional barbecues.

“We’re talking about smokers, pellets, Komodo-style pizza ovens, fireplaces—the whole backyard experience. Everybody wants the whole resort in their backyard.”

The shift reflects a broader trend toward outdoor spaces functioning as true extensions of the home. Homeowners are seeking areas where they can entertain, cook, relax, and spend extended periods of time without needing to move indoors.

FRAMELESS GLASS AND DARK FINISHES GAIN POPULARITY

Another feature Russell continues to see gaining momentum is frameless glass railing.

He notes that many homeowners are drawing inspiration directly from projects they see online, particularly through social media.

Recent product developments have also made these systems more appealing and easier to specify.

Russell mentions the introduction of black mounting hardware for glass railing systems as an example.

For him, the popularity of black finishes is about more than aesthetics.

Russell says black hardware and railing systems help the eye focus on the view beyond the deck rather than the railing itself.

That design principle allows homeowners to focus on the surrounding landscape rather than the railing itself, creating a cleaner visual experience and helping preserve sightlines.

AUDIO COULD BE THE NEXT FRONTIER

While many outdoor living innovations

DR. DECKS

today focus on cooking, lighting and visual design, Russell believes audio remains an underdeveloped category.

He sees significant opportunity for manufacturers willing to invest in premium outdoor sound systems specifically designed for outdoor environments.

“I think a lot of people are missing the full immersive experience,” he says.

Too often, homeowners rely on portable Bluetooth speakers or improvised solutions that fail to match the quality of the rest of the outdoor space.

Russell envisions integrated systems capable of delivering high-quality sound throughout the backyard while standing up to long-term outdoor exposure.

He notes that previous experiments with moving deck components and automation systems have faced durability challenges because many products weren’t designed to remain outdoors year-round.

As a result, his current focus remains on products that offer proven long-term performance.

“We’re just trying to focus on things that are solid, that are just going to stand the test of time.”

WHERE DEALERS SHOULD INVEST

If dealers are looking for a category worth investing in, Russell points directly to railing systems.

“I think I would invest in the railing,” he says.

He believes consumers increasingly recognize the value of low-maintenance

materials and are willing to spend more for products that offer durability and long-term performance.

Aluminum railing systems continue to gain traction because they require little upkeep while maintaining their appearance for years.

“A quality aluminum product is going to last longer, require less maintenance, just an occasional cleaning,” Russell says.

He says there is a wide range of options now available, from economical picket systems to premium glass rail solutions.

The category also benefits from growing consumer awareness. Through social media, YouTube, and project showcases, homeowners arrive at consultations already familiar with products and design possibilities.

“They already kind of know what it is before I show up on the job or for a bid,” he says.

ONE COMMON DESIGN MISTAKE

Despite all the innovation in the category, Russell believes some projects still fall into a common design trap: unnecessarily dividing outdoor spaces.

He frequently sees decks broken into multiple levels even when the overall footprint is relatively modest.

“I feel that if you have a 12-by-20-foot deck and you split it in two, you basically have two inefficient areas to use.”

Instead, he advocates maximizing usable space whenever possible.

“I’m of the belief that it’s better to have

one large space that’s usable than two small spaces.”

Multi-level designs certainly have their place, particularly on larger projects. Russell cites an award-winning 1,800-square-foot deck his company built, where four separate levels helped organize the expansive space.

The key, he says, is ensuring that design choices improve functionality rather than simply adding complexity.

FEATURES FOR THE FUTURE

When asked what outdoor living spaces might include as standard features five years from now, Russell’s answer isn’t tied to a specific product.

Instead, he believes the future lies in execution.

“I think it’s more about the fit and the finish, and the tightness of the job,” he says.

Consumers are becoming increasingly sophisticated and discerning. As the category matures, expectations around craftsmanship, seamless integration and attention to detail will continue to rise.

Russell also expects curved designs to become more common as builders become more comfortable incorporating them into projects.

“I think curves are going to become more streamlined as we keep building because I keep pushing them.”

For Russell, the appeal of curved designs isn’t about chasing awards or recognition.

“I’m doing it because I love it,” he says. “I just have fun doing it and it’s a challenge for me.”

That combination of craftsmanship, creativity and continuous improvement may ultimately be what defines the next generation of outdoor living.

A PERFECT FIT

Building supply dealers find that selling barbecues and smokers suits their demographic perfectly. Lumberworld, Victoria, B.C., is a prime example

Photo: Derek Ford

For 51 years, Lumberworld has become a Vancouver Island institution.

The store was founded by Dave Flaig and Clive Piercy in 1975. Still owned by the Flaig family (sons Boyd and Jarrett Flaig, among the four kids, are the most active in the business).

The building supply dealer is today managed by Dan Chan, who has been at the store for 11 years. Chan used to work for another big building supply yard in the city.

“From foundation to finish, we are more than lumber,” Lumberworld’s

marketing reads. Victoria serves more than Vancouver Island—it also serves the well-heeled Gulf Islands, with its population of about 25,000 between Victoria and Vancouver.

The store offers a full range of products, including paint, plumbing,

electrical, power and hand tools, moldings and millwork, fencing and landscaping, wall and ceiling, insulation, roofing, lumber (of course!), and general hardware.

That’s just a general description of the business but not what makes it special. We asked Chan what does.

The first thing Chan told us about the store he manages was that it has made a brilliant move into barbecues since the Covid pandemic. Lumberworld says it has the largest selection of barbecues on Vancouver Island. Indeed, an “outdoor kitchen” is the first thing customers see when they walk into the store.

The building supply yard got the idea when a big local competitor in the category went bankrupt about four years ago. Two years ago, in our Hardlines Outdoor Living supplement of 2024, we wrote about Jason Welikoklad, of Executive Home Building Centre in Red Deer, Alta., who had gotten into selling grilling supplies big time.

Welikoklad had even set up his own barbecue, smoker, accessory, and flavourings wholesale business, called 403 BBQ Co.

What Welikoklad discovered, and what Lumberworld has also found, is that the core customers of building supplies are often the same as those who spend a lot of money on grilling products. That

demographic skews male, has above-average income, is middle-aged, is interested in tools and accessories, and is a homeowner. Canadian Tire has long catered to this group but building supply retailers are also exemplars.

It’s surprising that more building materials dealers don’t add the barbecue category, which is as much a consumer play as it is appealing to contractors.

Lumberworld hasn’t set up a wholesale arm, as Executive has, but it’s equally committed to the category.

Whereas Welikoklad focuses on

smokers, Victoria is a barbecue market. Tastes in grilling vary regionally. Chan sells a lot of Weber product. And Napoleon grills, which he says is gratifying because it’s a famous Canadian company, headquartered in Barrie, Ont. Lumberworld sells a lot of barbecue charcoals, wood chips, and flavourings— like Bachan’s Japanese Barbecue Sauce. There is a SKU of the product at Costco, Chan says, but he adds that “people are surprised to find that there’s a whole range of Bachan’s products when they come into our store!”

Among the bestsellers in grill equipment at Lumberworld is Kamado Joe’s—a charcoal grill that looks like an orange egg. Plus, the store sells the ultimate in outdoor living sound equipment, Ukiah Co.’s Bluetooth devices, which are demonstrated in the store’s outdoor kitchen area.

The music pumps out all day long in the garden kitchen display. Selling in a retail store is an emotional business—a building supply yard is not just a business of commodities—and nothing ramps up the emotion like music.

It’s not just barbecues and sound

systems for outdoor entertaining at Lumberworld, of course. The store is strong in outdoor lumber, including pressure-treated, cedar, and laminate lumber (from at least four brands) for decks, gazebos, and fences. In the latter category, it does big business in prefabricated sections.

And, of course, Lumberworld excels in hardscaping, like pavers, flagstones, and concrete surfaces. The store has a fair number of landscape contractors dropping in, but it is not a contractor store overall.

Chan is a big fan of Vista Railings products, which include aluminum railings for

“One of the things that we do is our White Glove Service. For an extra $200, when you buy a new barbecue, we’ll assemble it, deliver it, and make sure it works properly. And we’ll haul away your old barbecue.”

decks and patios. The customer can give the store a plan, and the staff can organize the components into a package.

Lumberworld is in the Saanich area of Victoria, a city easy to navigate. As a result, Lumberworld, with its single location, is within about 20 minutes of most of the area’s consumers. Saanich and tony Oak Bay, nearby, are also home to the University of Victoria, which creates a lot of work for students in terms of structures and buildings.

Victoria is also the capital of B.C., so the city’s economy is relatively stable, Chan says. Like other capitals, such as Ottawa or Winnipeg, it doesn’t suffer the booms and busts of resource-based cities.

To better cater to customers, Chan is always looking to expand the store’s service offerings. “One of the things that we do is our White Glove Service. For an extra $200, when you buy a new barbecue, we’ll assemble it, deliver it, and make sure it works properly. And we’ll haul away your old barbecue.”

Now that’s customer service.

WEATHER, SPACE AND STRATEGY: HOW WINDSOR BUILDING CENTRE WINS IN OUTDOOR LIVING

In a category driven by weather, tight margins, and short selling windows, Windsor Building Centre focuses on display, timing, and

disciplined merchandising to make outdoor living pay

Outdoor living may be one of the most visible categories in a store, but it’s also one of the most unpredictable.

For dealers, success hinges on a narrow window of opportunity, shifting consumer trends, and the simple reality that if the weather doesn’t cooperate, neither do sales.

At Windsor Building Centre in Windsor, Ont., general manager Enzo Bonitatibus approaches the category with a mix of early planning, in-store execution, and a clear understanding of what actually drives purchase decisions.

“It’s weather, basically,” he says. “When it’s nice out, people are in that mood. When it’s cold or raining, traffic drops. You’re not selling mulch or patio furniture in the rain.”

That reality shapes everything, from inventory strategy to merchandising to promotions.

COMPETING WITH THE RIGHT PARTNERS

Operating under the BMR banner has helped Windsor Building Centre stay competitive in the category.

“They’ve got strong buyers, they’re on top of trends, and they bring in a great assortment,” Bonitatibus says. “Pricing is competitive. When you compare to other buying groups, we’re right in the ballgame.”

For independents, that kind of support can make a measurable difference in both product selection and margin pressure.

PLANNING AHEAD

Like many independent dealers, Windsor Building Centre relies heavily on buying shows and supplier previews to guide its seasonal planning.

“They showcase a lot of the new styles, the new colours,” Bonitatibus explains. “So, we have a good idea of what it’s going to look like for the following year.”

That forward visibility allows the team to commit to inventory early, with confidence in what will resonate with customers when the season hits.

This year, that includes a shift toward softer, more natural tones.

“Greens are definitely trending; lighter shades,” he says. “And we’re seeing strong demand for conversational

Enzo Bonitatibus, general manager, Windsor Building Centre

sets—three- and four-piece setups—and even bistro sets.”

While styles evolve, one constant remains: customers want to engage with the product in person.

“They want to see it, they want to feel it, they want to sit on it,” Bonitatibus says. “Comfort matters.”

DISPLAY IS THE STRATEGY

That insight has led Windsor Building Centre to make a significant commitment to in-store presentation.

With a 25,000-square-foot footprint, the store dedicates a large portion of its front end to seasonal displays.

“The more we can show, the better we do,” Bonitatibus says.

For dealers looking to grow the category, he sees this as non-negotiable.

“You have to display your product— especially furniture. If customers can’t see it, they’re not going to buy it.”

That becomes even more critical given the compressed selling season.

“You’ve only got a short window, about three to four months,” he says.

“You have to maximize the space you have and show off what you’re carrying.”

Even smaller stores, he adds, can compete, if they’re strategic.

“You might not be able to show everything, but you need to pick the right pieces and display them well.”

SELL THE SYSTEM

While outdoor living can drive significant top-line sales, profitability requires discipline.

“Margins are tight across the board,” Bonitatibus says. “Barbecues, patio furniture—it’s all tight.”

Instead of relying on product margins alone, Windsor Building Centre focuses on attachment selling.

“If a customer buys a barbecue, we’re selling the accessories, covers, tools, everything that goes with it,” he says. “That’s where you make it work.”

This approach turns a low-margin category into a more sustainable one, especially when paired with strong in-store merchandising.

CONTRACTORS DRIVE VOLUME

The outdoor category at Windsor Building Centre serves both DIY customers and contractors, but in different ways.

“For barbecues, patio furniture, mulch, that’s mostly DIY,” Bonitatibus says. “But when it comes to decks and fences, that’s where the contractors come in. That’s where the volume is.”

On the building side, pressure-treated lumber remains the dominant material, but preferences are shifting.

“Pressure-treated is still the biggest for volume,” he says. “But more customers are moving toward composite.”

The appeal is long-term performance.

“Cedar is four to five times the cost, but it’s no maintenance and it lasts,” Bonitatibus says. “And more contractors are getting into it because it’s a bigger ticket project.”

That evolution presents an opportunity for dealers to capture higher-value sales if they’re positioned to support it.

PROMOTIONS THAT RESPOND TO REALITY

With weather playing such a central role, Windsor Building Centre takes a flexible approach to promotions.

“We’re active on Facebook and Instagram,” Bonitatibus says. “We run things like seniors’ days, and we’ll do our own promotions on specific items.”

That flexibility allows the team to react quickly when sales lag.

“If something isn’t in the flyer and we feel like it needs a push, we’ll promote that SKU and adjust the price,” he says.

It’s a practical approach in a category where timing is everything.

STAYING IN YOUR LANE

While some retailers are expanding into

“When the weather’s nice, people are buying. When it’s not, traffic drops. It’s that simple.”

high-end outdoor kitchens and backyard builds, Windsor Building Centre has chosen to stay focused.

“Outdoor kitchens aren’t a big category for us,” Bonitatibus says. “That’s more of a specialty area, and there are other businesses in Windsor that focus on it.”

Instead, the store leans into its strengths.

“We focus on patio furniture and gazebos; we carry different sizes and styles,” he says.

That clarity helps avoid overextending into categories that require specialized expertise or infrastructure.

Barbecue remains a core driver in outdoor living, with certain segments gaining momentum.

“Barbecue sales are strong,” Bonitatibus says. “Blackstone products are becoming more popular, and we’ve got a few on display. We’re seeing growth there.”

As with furniture, visibility plays a key role.

“You need to show it,” he says. “That’s what gets people interested.”

MAKE IT VISIBLE, MAKE IT COUNT

For Bonitatibus, the formula for success in outdoor living comes down to execution in a short window.

“You have to display your product, you have to be ready for the season, and you have to make the most of the time you have,” he says.

In this category, opportunity doesn’t wait. It shows up with the sun, and disappears just as quickly.

FROM PATIO PURCHASES TO PERSONAL RETREATS

Decked Out in Black

Canadians aren’t just buying patio furniture anymore. They’re building outdoor lifestyles.

“Homeowners want outdoor spaces that do more than just accommodate. They want to make a statement,” says Bryan Perry of Constructive Design Group in North Carolina. “They’re looking for areas that feel intentional, where each zone has a purpose, from lounging to entertaining.” Perry notes that combining subtle earth tones with black accents, through decking patterns or furniture, creates a modern yet inviting aesthetic.

New research from consumer insights firm Caddle shows shoppers approaching outdoor purchases with purpose, investing across multiple categories as they create spaces for relaxation, entertaining, dining and everyday living. At the same time, design trends identified in the Deckorators’ 2026 Outdoor Living Report point to a growing emphasis on personalization, comfort, and year-round

usability. Together, the findings suggest outdoor living has evolved from a seasonal category into a major extension of the home.

THE OUTDOOR ROOM CONTINUES TO EXPAND

The shift toward outdoor living has been building for several years, but the latest research suggests the trend is maturing rather than slowing.

According to Caddle, 57 percent of Canadians planning a patio furniture purchase expect to buy within the next three months, creating a concentrated spring buying season. Another finding may be even more significant: shoppers rarely focus on a single purchase. Interest is spread across outdoor storage and décor (31.3 percent), shade solutions (30.9 percent), dining sets (29.1 percent), conversation sets (27.7 percent), open-stock furniture (24.4 percent), and fire features (24 percent).

dining, relaxing and recreation. Pools, hot tubs, fire features and outdoor kitchens increasingly serve as anchors around which multiple activity zones are organized.

The concept mirrors consumer pur-

Rather than replacing a chair or adding a table, consumers appear to be thinking holistically about their outdoor spaces.

That aligns closely with what Deckorators describes as the “thriving in place” movement, where homeowners view outdoor spaces as permanent extensions of their homes rather than seasonal add-ons. The report notes growing investment in patios, decks, kitchens, fire features and wellness-oriented outdoor environments designed for everyday use.

FROM BACKYARDS TO OUTDOOR DESTINATIONS

One of the strongest themes emerging in outdoor living is the move toward purpose-built zones.

Deckorators identifies “Swim, Socialize & Savor” as one of the defining design trends for 2026, highlighting the growing practice of dividing outdoor spaces into distinct areas for entertaining,

FUNCTION REMAINS A PRIORITY

While outdoor living is increasingly lifestyle-driven, practicality continues to influence purchasing decisions.

Among Canadians planning patio purchases, outdoor storage and décor rank as the most popular category, narrowly ahead of umbrellas, canopies and other shade solutions.

Those findings reflect growing interest in comfort, weather protection and efficient use of outdoor space.

Deckorators notes a parallel trend toward wellness-focused outdoor design, including spaces dedicated to relaxation, meditation, exercise and recovery. The report cites growing demand for features such as spas, cold plunges, outdoor fitness areas and environments that foster mental well-being and connection with nature.

In many cases, homeowners appear to be seeking outdoor spaces that work harder for them—not only as places to entertain, but also as places to recharge.

DESIGN MOVES BEYOND GREY

Aesthetic preferences are evolving as outdoor spaces become more sophisticated.

One of the clearest design trends identified by Deckorators is the decline of “millennial grey” in favour of darker, more dramatic accents. Black railings, posts, trim and architectural elements are increasingly being paired with warm wood tones and natural textures to create higher-contrast outdoor environments. According to the report, 37 percent of design experts identified bold accents as a growing trend in outdoor living.

The movement reflects a broader shift toward outdoor spaces that feel intentionally designed rather than purely functional.

Design details that were once considered secondary—including railings, lighting and hardware—are now playing a central role in project planning. Integrated lighting, glass rail systems and architectural accents are defining spaces and enhancing visual appeal.

REVIEWS MATTER MORE THAN EVER

As outdoor projects become larger and more considered purchases, consumers are spending more time validating their decisions.

According to Caddle, 67 percent of shoppers say reviews are at least somewhat important when purchasing patio furniture. More notably, reviews are most used after shoppers have narrowed their options, serving as a final confidence check before committing to a purchase.

The study also found that consumers expect strong ratings. Most shoppers require at least a four-star rating before seriously considering a product.

The findings suggest consumers are increasingly evaluating outdoor purchases the same way they evaluate major indoor furnishings—through a combination of price comparison, research and peer validation.

OUTDOOR SPACES BECOME MORE PERSONAL

Another notable trend is the growing customization of outdoor environments around specific lifestyles.

Deckorators highlights several emerging examples, including pet-friendly outdoor design, waterfront living enhancements and front-entry spaces designed for gathering rather than simply providing access to the home.

Pet-conscious design is becoming particularly prominent. The report points to growing demand for pet-safe decking materials, ramps, dedicated pet zones and outdoor layouts that accommodate both people and animals.

Meanwhile, front porches and entry areas are receiving renewed attention as homeowners apply backyard design principles to the front of the home. Expanded seating areas, decorative

ment toward personalization, in which outdoor spaces are designed around how homeowners actually live rather than a single entertaining function.

The outdoor living market entering 2026 appears to be defined by a combination of practicality, personalization and investment.

Consumers continue to prioritize value, with 56.8 percent relying on price comparisons and promotions when making patio purchasing decisions. Yet they are also thinking more broadly about how outdoor spaces fit into their lifestyles.

Whether through multi-zone layouts, wellness-focused amenities, pet-friendly features or upgraded design details, outdoor projects are increasingly being viewed as long-term investments in quality of life.

For retailers, manufacturers and outdoor living professionals, the message is clear: Canadians are no longer simply shopping for patio furniture. They’re building outdoor environments designed to support how they live, gather, and relax for years to come.
