Hey! I’m Abbie Durham. I’m a graphic designer driven by the intersection of contemporary pop culture and historical precedent. I am inspired by the reinvention cycle: where new media honors its roots while also aggressively pushing its own boundaries. This is the approach I take to my own design. I intentionally place myself in this balance to synthesize strong ideas. What is autism spectrum disorder?
Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is described as a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life. (Nih.gov)
What are the signs?
While ASD has traditionally been represented as a spectrum, a wheel diagram similar to the one pictured above has become more preferred. This is because the characteristics and experiences of autism are
complex, and this model serves as a better visual representation of those complexities and their severity.
Across the CDC surveillance sites, an average of 1 in every 31 (3.2%) 8-year-old children were estimated to have ASD in 2022. (CDC.Gov)
Most common contributing factors are:
• Having a sibling with ASD
• Having older parents
• Having certain genetic conditions (such as Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome)
• Having a very low birth weight
Rate of Autism diagnosis since 2000 Why is it on the rise?
Lots of people have attributed it to certain toxicological causes, but experts have cited changes in diagnostic criteria, increased screening at wellness checks, and a wider societal acceptance of mental health. (JohnHopkins.edu)
