Assistant Vice President for Student Success & Engagement The University of Alabama

Dr. Sterritt recently began a newly imagined Assistant Vice President for Student Success and Engagement role at The University of Alabama, designed as a collaboration between the Division of Student Life and Office for Academic Affairs. With a dual report to both the VP of Student Life as well as the Provost/Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Sterritt's position provides centralized leadership and enhanced coordination and collaboration for UAâ€™s programs and services related to student success, with the goals of increased retention, completion, and overall student success. Dr. Sterritt continues responsibility for student engagement areas in Student Life (Ferguson Student Center, FYE & Retention Initiatives, Student Involvement, Student Media, University Programs) while assuming responsibility for the Capstone Center for Student Success in the Office for Academic Affairs, which includes academic support services aimed at all students as well as priority student support programs such as SSS/TRIO, Alabama REACH, firstgeneration student scholarships, and the Crimson Edge and Exploring for Success programs for first-year students.

BLAKE WEISS LifeNet Class of 2017

Neighborhood Relations Coordinator University of South Carolina

Blake Weiss was awarded a $3,500 NASPA Innovation Grant on behalf of the Department of Student Life at UofSC. The grant will support the innovative work in utilizing geographic information system (GIS) software to create a better understanding, both visually and analytically, of the student experience off campus, including the impacts on the local community and unique student needs off campus.

As of February 1, 2019 Beth Wrinkle Nahlik was promoted to Assistant Dean of Student Success & Director of Title III.

SONJA ARDOIN LifeNet Class of 2006

Assistant Professor of Student Affairs Administration Appalachian State University

Dr. Sonja Ardoin is being recognized with two national awards this spring. She was named a 2019-2021 ACPA Emerging Scholar, one of the most prestigious awards for an early career scholar in student affairs, and is the recipient of the 2019 Socioeconomic and Class Issues in Higher Education KC Outstanding Service to NASPA Award. Both awards will be conferred during the annual conferences in March. Publications: Dr. Sonja Ardoin (M.S., 2006) is publishing her third book, Straddling Class in the Academy: 26 Stories of Students, Administrators, and Faculty from Poor and Working Class Backgrounds and Their Compelling Lessons for Higher Education Policy and Practice, with co-author dr. becky martinez in April 2019. She has also published four book chapters this year and her research was featured in NPR and the Hechinger Report. Dr. Sonja Ardoin is contributing to multiple conferences this academic year with three sessions at SACSA, one at ASHE, three at AFLV, three at ACPA, and five at NASPA. Many of these sessions are collaborations with colleagues. Dr. Sonja Ardoin married her partner, Zeb Jenkins III, on December 28, 2018 in New Orleans. Several members of the FSU LifeNet were in attendance for the festivities. Sonja and Zeb currently live in Dallas, NC and enjoy their work at Appalachian State University and Travelers Insurance, respectively.

WAYNE KING LifeNet Class of 1980 Retired

Hardee Board member Wayne King `80 began "experimenting" with complete retirement December 1, 2018. Wayne enjoyed a 30+ year career at Furman University, retired from there, and then utilized his funeral director's license part-time for six years, The final two of those six years, he also worked part-time at his undergraduate alma mater, Mars Hill University, as Advancement Relations Associate, assisting with a successful fundraising campaign.

Graduated from the University of Central Florida with my Doctor of Education degree in Educational Leadership. My dissertation title was "An Examination of the Insights and Support of Self-Advocacy by Academic Advisors when Working with Students with Disabilities in Higher Education".

SHERYL MCDANIEL GRAY LifeNet Class of 1982 University Registrar Carson-Newman University

Sheryl McDaniel Gray was awarded the Distinguished Service Award from the Tennessee Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admission Officers conference at the 2018 Annual meeting and Conference in Knoxville, TN.

ARTHUR B. HARTZOG, SR. LifeNet Class of 1981 Retired

Dr. Hartzog is pleased to announce the publication of his book "TreeDimensional Leadership". Directly influenced by his studies at FSU (1979-81), his unique approach to leadership is intended for the general public, from high school students, to families, to the upper echelons of business, industry and government. Written in a conversational, easyreading format, the book employs a simple, easy-to-remember model and fascinating information about trees to explain three fundamental dimensions of leadership: Authority, Abilities and Character. ERIK L. COLLINS LifeNet Class of 1966

Professor Emeritus, School of Journalism and Mass Communications University of South Carolina

Prof. Emeritus Erik L. Collins, Ph.D., J.D., has been named the Interim Director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Collins retired from full-time teaching and administration at USC in 2014, but has continued to teach courses in media law and ethics on a regular basis. Dr. Collins earned a master's degree in higher education administration from Florida State University in 1966, a Ph.D. in mass communications from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University in 1972 and a J.D. from the Moritz College of Law at Ohio State University School in 1977.

KELLY E. MAXWELL LifeNet Class of 1994

Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education University of Michigan

Dr. Kelly Maxwell was promoted to Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts after 17 years with the Program on Intergroup Relations (the past 10 as its academic director). Kelly is the national board chair of the Difficult Dialogues National Resource Center.

JIM CARR LifeNet Class of 1975 Senior Vice President Harding University

Dr. James (Jim) W. Carr MS 1971, PhD 1975 was recently elected to be the Board Chair of the Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board. This governing board is made up of 12 individuals appointed by the governor.

TAYLOR LOCKS LifeNet Class of 2016

Assistant Director for Residence Life William & Mary

Taylor recently accepted a promotion as the Assistant Director for Residence Life at William & Mary. In the new role, she supervises three full-time professionals, advises RHA, and manages higher level student intervention. Additionally, this past fall Taylor began her Ph.D. in Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership (higher education).
