Director's Letter Our commitment to continuing the tremendous legacy of Dr. Melvene Draheim Hardee has and will continue, regardless of the challenges or barriers we find ourselves facing. Fulfilling our two-fold purpose of supporting our program's students, faculty, staff, and friends, while coordinating alumni engagement and advancements through the Covid-19 pandemic has had some challenges but we have grown through these experiences and developed in new and exciting ways. We have gathered in digital spaces, expanded our student support projects, and been reminded to take the time to express gratitude and love for others. As we move through this year and beyond, we want to express our constant appreciation for the ongoing support we receive. The Center and the LifeNet truly would not exist without YOU! Looking forward to the rest of this academic year, we hope to see you (in real life or digitally) at one of the many conferences, receptions, and gatherings happening this semester and next. History in Photos I will be graduating next year and leaving this role as Hardee Center Associate Director. Tallahassee has been my home since 2016 and thinking about leaving has made me both nostalgic and curious. I always find myself wondering about what the spaces I've occupied looked like at a different point in time. For my last editions of the LifeNet Newsletter, I will be including photos of different eras in Florida State's history. Thanks to the power of the internet (and the State Library and Archives of Florida) we can actually see what used to be. In this edition, I have focused on the earlier days of campus, around the 1900s. Prior to becoming the Florida Female College, the institution was co-educational and called Florida State College. In 1905, the male student body was moved from FSC to Gainsville to create the University of Florida and the Tallahassee Campus became a women's institution. In 1909, the Florida Female College became Florida State College for Women and men would not return to campus until the 1947 creation of Florida State University. The Hardee Center will be arranging and hosting several LifeNet and Friends gatherings during the upcoming conference season! Including ASHE, ACPA, and NASPA. Digital Textbook Purchases The Hardee Center has partnered with the Florida State University Libraryu to provide ourstudents with free and easily accessible textbooks and other useful resources specific to our curriculum and our students' interests. So far, we have ensured our students have access to 30+ required texts for both required and elective courses in the Higher Education Program. Each semester we work with our program faculty to purchase additional eBooks with the goal of eventually ensuring all texts are free.

Expanding Our Student Support: Dr. Glenn Wayne Stillion Dissertation Award In addition to the Hardee Fellowship Program, the Hardee Center supports several financial awards. This year, we are adding a new annual award: the Dr. Glenn Wayne Stillion Dissertation Award. Through this award, we hope to honor the life and work of Dr. Stillion, an advisee of Dr. Hardee who graduated from our program in 1968. As a continuous supporter of the Hardee Center and active LifeNet member, Dr. Stillion was remembered as saying his degree from our program was his most treasured educational accomplishment. As we work to finalize the details of this award, we hope to tie the legacy of Dr. Stillion's research on leadership (his dissertation title was Values, Perceptions, and Characteristics of Student Leaders Compared with the General Student Population at Florida State University) into the - 0 6 process.

Shifting the Hardee Fellowship Program.
The Hardee Fellowship program provides financial support for students' professional development endeavors. These endeavors include, but are not limited to, conference and workshop attendance, professional development-related travel expenses, and even dissertation-related support. Historically, this designation has been awarded based on GPA merit. However, this year we have shifted to an application-based selection, as GPA alone does not reflect success in our program. Instead, we have developed a short application including an essay portion focused on the pillars of the program (leadership, student success, and social justice), and included our Hardee Board Members in the selection process. We have also expanded the responsibilities of Hardee Fellows to include involvement in the Hardee Oral History Project as a means to directly connect current students with our LifeNet. Below, we have outlined all the details of the program. If you have thoughts on this new direction, we'd love to hear them, email us at coe-Hardee@admin.fsu.edu.

Florida State University's Higher Education program is built upon the foundation of three core pillars: Leadership, Social Justice, and Student Success. As a Hardee Fellow, you are expected to embody and grow within each of these values. Since becoming a student in the Higher Education program, please evaluate your personal development within each of these pillars, and your plan for further development in each area.
Contribution to the Hardee Oral History Project: Completion and transcription of at least one (1) oral history interview
In the past, part-time students could receive the designation of Hardee Fellow, but funding was unavailable to them. We have changed that. Any student enrolled in a Higher Education program who has already completed 18 credit hours in their current program can receive funding.

Hannah graduated from University of Florida in December 2020 and was a Resident Assistant (RA) for three years at UF. She has an interest in mental health, specifically working with firstyear students. Ashlee attended The University of Oklahoma before transferring and graduating from Texas A&M University in December 2020, earning a Bachelor of Arts in English. During her time at TAMU, she served as a research assistant with the English department, developing an open-educationalresource textbook for "ENGL 104: Composition and Rhetoric" students. Ashlee also served as a peer mentor for first-year students, risk management chairwoman for her sorority, an international student mentor, and was employed at a civil litigation law firm. Carlye Collison was born and raised in Cambridge, a small town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She completed her undergraduate career at the University of South Carolina where she studied public relations and served as a University Ambassador and University 101 Peer Leader: two experiences that inspired her to pursue a career in student affairs. She currently serves as the Graduate Assistant for Dance Marathon at FSU and has an interest in student activities, fraternity and sorority life, and first year experience. After completing her masters, Carlye hopes to begin her career at an institution in the Southeast and work with students to foster inclusive environments on a college campus.
Norma Cruz was born in Fort Worth, Texas but raised in Irving, Texas to two Central American parents. She has an interest in identifying the characteristics that may contribute to the success of racial and ethnic minoritized groups through academic advising at PWI's. After obtaining her master's, she plans to continue working in a setting where she can have one on one interactions with students in efforts to aid them in their educational journey. During her free time, she enjoys weightlifting, spending time with family, and being the best dog mom. -

Madison Drummond
Madison graduated from the University of Georgia with degrees in Sport Management and Advertising in May of 2021. She currently serves as the graduate assistant for Events and Program in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Her undergraduate experiences in extended orientation, leadership development programming and athletics shaped her interest in student athlete development, the first generation student experience, and leadership programming. Nathan Ferrell is a first year masters student in the field of Higher Education - Student Affairs. He is from Norman, Oklahoma where he was a musical theatre major first. He was involved with Greek Life, Orientation, Dance Marathon, and held a pageant title of Mr. Central 2019-2020. Texas A&M University, 2021 Education, Interdisciplinary Studies Jabreon graduated with honors from Texas A&M University as a member of the Fighting Texas Aggie class of 2021, earning an Education degree. Whoop! During her time at TAMU, Jabreon held the positions of social chair of Phi Eta Sigma; counselor, and eventually chairperson for TAMU Fish Camp; Aggie Orientation leader; student representative on the President's Council for Climate and Diversity and the University Discipline Appeals Panel; ExCEL mentor; NASPA Undergraduate Fellow and served as a founding executive of XL Academy, eventually serving as their program coordinator. In addition to her campus involvement, Jabreon earned several honors including being crowned TAMU's first 'Miss Black TAMU' by Texas A&M’s Black Student Alliance Council; receiving Texas A&M Foundation's Trustees’ Outstanding Student Award; Buck Weirus Spirit Award, and being named NAACP's Community Service Person of the Year for 2020 and 2021.

At UGA, Grant served as a Student Coordinator for Dawg Camp Extended Orientation, the Executive Director of First-Year Programs for Student Government Association, a University Ambassador with Arch Society, and in both campus and community nonprofit spaces. Grant is interested in student programming and services through orientation, transition, and retention, civic learning and democratic engagement, leadership, and more. He hopes to continue exploring higher education and research through various lenses, including education policy, institutional research, and student success.

She graduated from Florida State University with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology in Fall 2020. She is a first generation student with afro-Caribbean descents. Her short term goal is to work in student affairs with first generation students. Her long term goal is to become a president at an institution and to build a scholarship foundation for disadvantaged students to fund equitable resources. Her research population interest is in the minority population including first generation and autistic students. Her hobbies include cooking, traveling, and making lifelong memories.

Adarius is a first-year master's student in the Higher Education program here as well. In his free time, he enjoys cooking, working out, and watching documentaries on various subjects. She has come to the US with her family for 3 years. Since she moved here, she has been learning English at the Center of Intensive English Studies of FSU. During the last 2.5 years, She has always been thinking about the day of going back to school. She really appreciate this opportunity because she had to make a lot of effort to realize my dream.

Holly Henning is originally from Batesville, Mississippi but lived in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, Alabama for almost ten years before moving to Tallahassee to begin her Ph.D. in Higher Education at Florida State. Holly has worked in higher education for roughly a decade and has a broad range of experience advising and teaching students. She currently works as an Academic Program Specialist in Advising First at FSU, where she oversees the SLS 1203 Introduction to Academic Major course and helps students find their best-fit majors. Outside of work and school, Holly enjoys traveling to see her niece who lives in Scotland, as well as cooking, watching the latest Netflix show, and spending time with her cat, Gracie.

Amy Haggard is a 2nd year PhD student and is the Associate Director of Alumni and Student Engagement for the Division of Undergraduate Studies. Born in Tallahassee but raised in Western North Carolina, Amy bleeds garnet and gold, and is happy to be home and working with and learning from passionate FSU students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Darius Robinson is a second year Ph.D. student in the Higher Education doctoral program. Before coming to Tallahassee, he was a coordinator for student leadership and activities at the University of Nevada, Reno. His former work experiences in higher education, leadership and non-profit work continue to shape his personal philosophy to provide a voice to marginalized populations. In the program, Darius is working on research connected to the leadership experiences of students of color, with an emphasis on black male leadership.

Antonio is a passionate and hardworking graduate international student from Mexico City, Mexico. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the Higher Education program at Florida State University. His research interests cover leadership, pedagogical development, leadership in games, student development theory, and issues relating to the Latinx community. Antonio currently serves as a graduate research assistant for the Leadership Learning Research Center. He is an instructor for the Undergraduate Leadership Certificate in Leadership Studies and has contributed to leadership research in the topics of reflection and pedagogy. Antonio is known for his adept communication skills and ability to identify and handle challenges ahead. His vision of making a difference with his work and his diverse life and cultural experiences are assets he uses to unify teams and drive them to results.

To close out this edition, I thought it would be lovely to learn about someone a building was named after on campus. So, here's a bit about Jennie. -M
Jennie Henderson (1877 – 1921), a graduate of the Seminary West of the Suwannee River with a bachelor of letters, was the daughter of Col. John A. Henderson, a lawyer and railroad counsel who served as a trustee of the Seminary. Henderson introduced his daughter to young educator Albert A. Murphree. The two hit it off, and Murphree proposed during a buggy ride on Thanksgiving Day in 1896. The couple married in 1897, the year Murphree was selected as third President of the Seminary. The couple had five children, one of whom died young. Mrs. Murphree, who played the piano and who insisted that all her children learn to play various musical instruments, merged her love of music with her fondness for entertaining. In 1909, when Murphree became President of the University of Florida, the family moved to Gainesville. After Mrs. Murphree died suddenly in 1921, a Florida State College for Women dormitory was named in her honor. Residents of Jennie Murphree Hall were referred to as “Jennie Roses.” Her daughter, Martha, was a member of the FSCW Class of 1925. Information Pulled From FSU, Office of the President
