What's new.
As of July 1st 2018, there has been a new law put in place about paying GST at settlement; purchasers of new residential premises, or a block of land in a new subdivision will be required to pay GST to the ATO at settlement. This is directed at non-compliance by 'property suppliers' who sell properties for a price that includes the GST but who avoid remitting the GST by dissolving their businesses before their next BAS lodgment. This is a form of phoenixing. Purchases before 1 July 2018 settling before 1 July 2020 will be excluded from this new change. Additionally, it will not apply to the following property transactions: - Sales of existing residential properties; - Sales of new or existing commercial properties; - Lease agreements of more than 5 years; and - Substantially renovated premises To find out more please visit the ATO website.
