Camp Harbor Workshop Program Dear Camp Families, Welcome to our workshop and trailblazer programs! • •

Workshops are held before camp from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. or after camp from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Workshops are offered for a flat rate regardless of enrollment in the Camp Harbor Program. There will be no pro-rating of workshop pricing, except for the week in which camp is closed due to the Fourth of July holiday. Afternoon camp is available for Trailblazer campers. Once the trailblazer program has finished, any campers staying for the afternoon will be escorted back to their groups to pick up the schedule for the rest of the day. Campers only enrolled in the Trailblazer Program, with no afternoon camp, may stay for lunch only if they are participating in the lunch program here at Camp Harbor. We may add or change workshops and trailblazers over the course of the year. Please refer to camp eblasts and the camp website for changes.

Workshop Programs Camp Harbor is pleased to offer an exciting Workshop Program to those campers who want to keep their academic momentum going, receive an extra boost to improve skills, or that extra challenge to move ahead. Harbor offers its workshop program as a supplement to the Camp Harbor program. The workshop classes, in combination with the Camp Harbor program, are optional and available at an additional charge. This is an exciting option for boys and girls interested in concentrating on or developing a particular skill or interest that they might not be able to pursue during the regular school year. All workshops meet daily, Monday through Friday, for one hour. Some workshops require a two-week commitment. These programs are offered twice each day: the morning session (8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.) and the afternoon session (3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.) By scheduling our workshop programs before and after the normal camp day, we have allowed our campers to enjoy all the benefits of the Camp Harbor schedule of events while having the opportunity to explore their interests in a workshop. Please note that there are no make-up days and that a course that is under-enrolled may be cancelled. Schedule Changes: Should a student wish to make a change in his/her workshop schedule after May 2, space must be available in the desired workshop for the change to occur. No refunds for schedule changes or missed workshops will be given after May 25, 2018. Enrollment Fee: All Harbor Country Day School Summer Programs require that a $50 registration fee accompany each camper’s/student’s enrollment agreement. This amount is a processing charge and is non-refundable. In addition, there is a $25 per week deposit for each week that you register your child for camp and workshops. This deposit will only be applied towards the camp tuition for the week in which the deposit is made and is non-refundable after March 15, 2018. Please note that these charges apply for each camper/student even if he/she joins the program mid-season.
Trailblazer Programs Trailblazer Program Half day program - available for grades 2-8 from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm (some will include a recreational swim)
The Trailblazer program is a half-day program with classes in science, art, or athletics. All of our classes will be taught by certified teachers or coaches, and the half-day program will also include a recreational swim and a snack. A full course listing with corresponding dates can be found in this booklet. Enrollment is limited. All programs require a $50 registration fee. This amount is a processing charge and is non-refundable. In addition, a $25 non-refundable deposit is required for each week you register your child. Materials Fee: Some Camp Harbor workshops and trailblazers may require payment of an additional materials fee. The materials fees range from $10-$35 depending on the program chosen. This fee helps cover the high cost of quality supplies. Materials fees will be listed on your billing and full payment is due with all other Camp & Workshop payments, by May 25, 2018. Medical form: A medical form, billing statement and additional program information will be sent to you upon receipt of the completed enrollment agreement. Please note that all Harbor Workshop and Trailblazers Programs will begin with the week of July 2, 2018, and continue for six weeks through the week of August 6th
Academics Students in the Academic Workshops may strengthen and develop their language arts (reading/writing), and math skills in morning and/or afternoon classes. Because classes are small (maximum of 6 in the younger groups), there is time for a high degree of interaction between teacher and student, and individual needs can be given even more attention than during the regular school year. The atmosphere is relaxed, and emphasis is on making the learning experience enjoyable. These classes are structured in two-week sessions: the weeks of 7/02 and 7/9, 7/16 and 7/23, 7/30 and 8/06. However, varied activities allow students to attend for any number of weeks without concern for sequence. Upon receipt of the enrollment agreement, parents requesting academic classes will be sent an Academic Questionnaire in the mail. An information sheet will be sent home by the teachers each Friday to keep parents informed. Academic courses being offered: Language Arts, Mathematics, Kindergarten Readiness and Creative Writing. Please note: To accommodate camp families who wish to enroll in both the Language Arts Workshop and Math Workshop, we are alternating the times in which they are offered. Please be advised to check the “Workshops at a Glance” pages for the full schedule. Language Arts Grades 1-6 *See Workshop Schedule Available 7/2 & 7/9, 7/16 & 7/23, 7/30 & 8/6 Students focus on reading comprehension, vocabulary development, phonics and writing skills. The enjoyment of reading and writing will be stressed in this class as students strengthen their skills. Various textbooks, workbooks, games and skill series will be used. The goals of the students enrolled will be taken into consideration when planning the specifics of the curriculum. Math Grades 1-6 *See Workshop Schedule Available 7/2 & 7/9, 7/16 & 7/23, 7/30 & 8/6 The focus will be on basic skills in addition and subtraction, including problem solving, speed drills, money, geometric shapes (for younger grades), telling time, skip counting, place value, and basic geometry (for the older grades). Manipulatives, group activities, games and various workbooks will be used. The specific goals of enrolled students will be addressed. Kindergarten Readiness Kindergarten AM Workshop Available 8/6 This “fun” class is designed to develop and expand pre-reading and math skills. This will include activities in number and letter recognition and formation, sequencing, counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s, simple addition, vowel sounds, name writing, basic geography, and school safety rules.
Athletics Basketball Grades 3-8 PM Workshop Available 7/9 Want to become the King or Queen of camp knockout? Work on your game in this exciting weeklong basketball clinic. Campers will learn the fundamentals in shooting, rebounding, dribbling, defense, and passing through games and contests. No prior experience necessary, just an interest in the sport. Minimum of 8 campers needed for this workshop to run.
Yoga AM Workshop
Grades 3-8 Available 7/9
Come have fun with movement while trying a variety of yoga poses to improve coordination, body awareness, strength and flexibility.
Volleyball AM Workshop
Grades 4-8 Available 7/30
Learn all aspects of the game during this action-packed workshop. Practice passing, setting, hitting and serving through gamebased drills and scrimmages. No prior experience is necessary.
Tennis Grades 4-8 AM Workshop Available 8/6 This exciting workshop covers everything from working on your swing, grip and serve to scorekeeping. No prior experience necessary, just an interest in the sport.
STEM Program Camp Harbor is proud to introduce our STEM program. Whether it is in the daily schedule or in our exciting Trailblazer and Workshop programs, Harbor campers will learn how the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math make the world go round. This program will spark your child’s interest in science with opportunities not typically found in the classroom. Campers will share in the discovery with hands-on experiments and activities designed to encourage critical thinking and promote self-confidence. In the next 10 years, there will be 9 million new jobs in STEM related fields. The goal of our program is to lay the foundation for your child to become part of the next great generation of innovators to lead us into the future. Lights, Camera, Action! Grades 2-5 Trailblazer 9:00 am - 12:30 pm Available 7/23 Digital Filmmaking exposes campers to the basic elements of the filmmaking process. Campers will bring their story to life as they learn how to use ipads to film unique shots and edit original footage, culminating in a red carpet premiere screening of their finished work. Full STEAM Ahead Grades 2-8 Trailblazer 9:00 am - 12:30 pm Available 7/30 Campers will be immersed in STEAM projects across various fields of science. As engineers, they will build balloon gliders and bridges. As artists, they will grow crystal gardens and create seed bomb necklaces. Campers will explore different forms of energy by creating circuits, noise makers, and kaleidoscopes. They will see the value of “failing forward” while rising to complete numerous STEAM challenges. Engineer Expedition Grades 4-8 Trailblazer 9:00 am – 12:30 pm Available 7/9 How high can you build your marshmallow tower? Who can build a boat that holds the most weight? Participate in exciting challenges while exploring the principles of physics, construction and design. Roller Coasters Grades 4-8 Trailblazer 9:00 am - 12:30 pm Available 7/16 In this Trailblazer, our campers will take on the role of an amusement park engineer. You’ll learn how the forces of energy, acceleration, and momentum are used to make everyone’s favorite amusement park rides: Roller Coasters! Upon completion of your crash course in the physics of roller coasters, you will design, name, and build your very own coaster.
STEM Program Jurassic Safari Grades 1-3 PM Workshop Available 7/2 Campers will learn about everyone's favorite ancient creatures, dinosaurs! Learn about what the world was like when dinosaurs roamed the earth. What did they eat? How did they interact with each other? What caused the extinction of the dinosaurs? Learn the answers to these questions and more! LEGO WeDo Robotics Grades 1-3 PM Workshop Date TBD With Lego WeDo’s campers can learn about constructing and operating simple machines. By starting with the basic building blocks that make up all of the machines that surround us in our modern world, campers will learn to build, manipulate, and operate simple machines. From motors to gears to pulley systems and belts, campers will learn what makes the world...and a lot of other things...go round. Chess Grades 1-5 PM Workshop Available 7/9 Learn how to play chess, including basic moves and all of the rules. AM Workshop (Grades 1-5): also available as an AM Workshop the week of 7/16.
Ooey Gooey Slime Grades 4-8 PM Workshop Available 7/2 Dig your hands into some sticky fun and experiment with different mixtures to discover how to change the color, thickness and consistency of your slime. Use a variety of materials to create slime that is thick or thin, smooth or chunky, clear or colored – and even smelly! PM Workshop (Grades 1-3): This workshop is available 7/30 for campers in grades 1-3. Coding Grades 4-8 AM Workshop Date TBD In this workshop, you’ll learn the language of the machines that revolutionize our world. Learn the basics of coding and computer programming in this beginner level Workshop. You will even build your own computer game! This workshop is a great way for you to familiarize yourself with technology and work on problem solving skills. No prior experience necessary!
Baking Join us for Baking Coach ÂŽ morning enrichment programs which incorporate the wonders of math and science, while teaching basic cooking and baking skills. These hands-on workshops expose students to the use of kitchen tools, measurement and equivalents, and following instructions to prepare recipes. Students will be provided with appropriate containers to bring their creations home to share with family, and daily copies of each classroom recipe.
Dough!!!! AM Workshop

Create delicious homemade doughs including cinnamon rolls, pie dough, pizza, soft pretzels, and cookies. Materials fee: $35
Holiday Favorites AM Workshop
Grades 1-8 Available 7/23
Campers will prepare seasonal favorites from throughout the year: fudge cupcakes, Irish soda bread, guacamole, apple pie, and pumpkin muffins. Materials fee: $35
Make Room for Dessert AM Workshop
Grades 1-8 Available 7/30
Enjoy learning to make quick, easy desserts for the whole family to enjoy. In this workshop we will learn how to make frosting, fondant, mousses and more! This program includes fresh fruit tart, cupcakes, cake, chocolate mousse and cake pops. Materials fee: $35
Music
Ukulele Grades 2-8 AM Workshop Available 7/2 The ukuleles are back! Go beyond the basic ukulele lesson learned in music class to refine your craft and become a ukulele extraordinaire. Learn new notes and techniques, so you can jam out to the sweet sounds of the ukulele. Please Note: ukuleles are supplied by Camp Harbor, but spots are limited.
Guitar I Grades 4-8 PM Workshop Available 8/6 This workshop is for those who would like to pick up the guitar for the first time! Campers will learn the parts of the guitar, notes, scales, and even some beginner songs! Please Note: Campers must provide their own instruments. Campers must bring instruments to and from camp with them each day; they may not be left overnight. Stomp! Grades 4-8 PM Workshop Available 7/23 Learn how to make music with the objects of everyday life during this high energy body percussion workshop! While playing alone and as part of the group, campers will try their hand at improvisation and rhythm using props such as paper, books, bins and more.
Art Programs Crafty Campers Grades K-3 PM Workshop Available 7/16 Campers will experiment with a variety of materials to create snails and turtles with button shells, create and decorate a freeze pop sleeve using felt, and beautiful thumbprint dandelions with finger paint. Campers will also use swirly ribbon to create hanging jellyfish and make puppets using mixed materials. Playful Pieces Grades K-3 PM Workshop Available 7/23 Paint with bubbles! Stuff and decorate your own puppet! Create scratch off paper! Campers will have fun creating a variety of artwork, much of which can played with long after the workshop ends. Celebrate the Seasons Grades 4-8 PM Workshop Available 7/9 Journey through the seasons beginning with pinecone animals. Celebrate winter in July with sock penguins, and then create windchimes using beads and inventive objects. Campers will finish the week with paper origami bookmarks, jumping frogs and more! Paint On Grades 4-8 PM Workshop Available 7/30 Explore painting on glass sun catchers, vases, clear glass ornaments and more! CIT Program
The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program is an exciting option for teenagers interested in working as camp counselors in the years ahead. CITs are required to participate in the Red Cross Babysitter, CPR and First Aid workshops offered. Although there is no additional charge for these required workshops, the materials fee is still required. Babysitter Course (Red Cross)
CIT Only Available 7/16 Students will learn the responsibilities of being a babysitter, how to handle emergencies and prevent accidents, how to play with children of different ages, how to diaper and dress infants, and how to prepare simple foods. They will also learn how to interview for a job and what to expect from employers. Materials fee: $20 CPR(Infant/Child)
CIT Only Available 7/23 Participants will become familiar with the Emergency Medical Services System, learn how to perform a primary survey and how to respond to a breathing and cardiac emergency in a child and an infant. Students will learn about safety and prevention of childhood injuries. Older students may receive certification. Materials fee: $20. First Aid (Red Cross Community)
CIT Only Available 7/23
After completing this course, participants will be familiar with how to recognize an emergency and care for victims of
injuries and sudden illness. Older participants may be able to receive certification. Materials fee: $20.
