We are proud to be a founding member of the Baby Food Council, as we partner in the development of a Baby Food Standard. This initiative will look to best-in-class management techniques to reduce the levels of heavy metals in baby food products to as low as reasonably achievable, while preserving beneficial nutrients.

Last year we advanced our mission with the launch of our Happy Baby® Nutty Blends™! We created these delicious fruit and nut purees to help parents introduce and include peanuts and tree nuts in baby's diet, in a baby-appropriate texture using familiar fruits babies love. We also shared a campaign to provide more resources and support around peanut and tree nut introduction.

Our Communities

Over 6 million families in the US receive federal support 1 to purchase groceries through which supports Ourthe TeamWIC program, Our Communities Women with Infants and Children up to age 52. The COVID-19 pandemic caused crowds to panic-shop, rushing to stock up on food and clearing out grocery shelves. At the Our same time, many parents faced job loss, drastically impacting Communities Our Partners household incomes. With limited products in grocery stores that are Our Team Our Communities Our Partners WIC-approved, we began to see a serious need for action to support all families, so we provided resources to:

Find where to shop for in-stock WIC-approved products through store locators

Educate on the importance of the WIC program

Direct families that experienced financial hardships to WIC resources

Share what to look for in-store to identify WIC-approved items

Food apartheids may be more commonly known as food deserts. However, "food deserts" are not desolate, empty neighborhoods, but are areas that have been systemically and institutionally cut off from access to nutritious food. Food apartheid is a form of apartheid because in most cases, the lack of availability of healthy food disproportionately affects communities of color4. These are areas where there is a lack of easy access to grocery stores and markets carrying fresh, nutritious foods. That means in urban and suburban areas, the nearest supermarket is over 1 mile away, and for rural areas it is over 10 miles away.

In Tanzania, many children under the age of 5 suffer from serious health problems like malnutrition and anemia. For years now we have been working with our partners to build a program that would effect change in an impactful way.6 This year, over 670 children have been reached with malnutrition and anemia screenings at the Happy Family Children’s Village in Tanzania, with in-depth nutrition training and support also being provided to over 100 families. This project came to be by bringing together two of our longstanding non-profit partners, SPOON Foundation and The Small Things. These dedicated organizations have found ways to continue these trainings despite a global pandemic, and we're so grateful for their work to impact children's health through nutrition. 6. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5804135/

OUR COMMITMENTS TO PROTECT THE PLANET Our commitment to a better tomorrow is what drives our business – we continually innovate as we strive to improve our packaging, as we advocate for environmental change, and as we partner with farmers that are at the forefront of sustainable agriculture.

REDUCING CLIMATE IMPACT In order to set strong target goals towards reducing our carbon footprint, we chose to start by understanding our “full-scope” baseline – this calculates the carbon emissions generated from all the activities it takes to harvest, make, and deliver our products.

Last year we calculated our carbon footprint baseline to be about 60,000 tonnes – equal to the energy needed to power about 7,000 homes for one year. With this baseline, we can continue to strengthen the critical work necessary to reduce our carbon footprint.

IMPLEMENTING REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE

In 2020 we purchased 442,280 pounds of fruits & veggies grown using regenerative practices!

IMPROVING PACKAGING SUSTAINABILITY 40% of packaging meets our 2025 commitments, up from 37% at the end of 2019!

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING IS A TOP PRIORITY AND WE HAVE COMMITTED TO THREE AREAS OF FOCUS BY 2025:

In 2020, we launched our Regenerative Farmer Fund which was created to help support existing or aspiring Happy Family® Organics’ growers who are looking to improve or adopt regenerative practices.

Javier

The Fund grants up to $40,000 annually to four farmers in the Happy Family® Organics supply chain. Our first group of farmers focused on new tree plantings, cover crop trials, improved irrigation, and reduced tillage.

MONTES DE MOLINA Montes de Molina participated in our farmer training program, Project Greenhouse, in 2019 and the Regenerative Farmer Fund in 2020. Using the money they received through the Fund, Montes de Molina planted a cover crop blend of oats and lupine on 127 acres, leading to a reduction of 26.6 tons of carbon compared to 2019*. *Based on calculations using The Cool Farm Tool

THIS IS FARMED FOR OUR FUTURE

2020 was a big year for accelerating our work in regenerative agriculture to help reverse climate change! We launched a new line of Regenerative & Organic baby food made with ingredients grown using regenerative practices that can help to reverse climate change, and expanded our regenerative farmer training program with our Regenerative Farmer Fund.

SPREADING THE NEWS!

We featured regenerative farmers and highlighted some regenerative principles on our packaging and on pouch. We also evolved this into a digital storybook and educational video to help kids and their parents learn about regenerative farming!

NUTRITION ON A MISSION FOR CHANGE

Our team came together to update our commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion, highlighting three core pillars:

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION

Our Team

We are committed to playing a meaningful role in this movement, focusing as always on building a better future for all children. Ensuring that our team reflects the diversity of the communities and families we serve will allow us to strengthen and advocate for this vision from within. We are committed to doing our part to break down the systemic and institutional barriers that marginalized communities face, as we raise and empower the next generation to continue to champion for a more just world.

The events that took place in May of 2020 set in motion a national call for change and a reckoning with centuries of systemic racism, discrimination, inequity and division; the murder of George Floyd sparked a global movement for racial justice.

Our Communities OurTEAM Team OUR

Improve recruiting and networking channels in order to attract and retain BIPOC talent, to increase diversity in leadership and across our team. Build stronger training and education workshops focused on anti-racism and the various dimensions of diversity, building skills to take action in ways that create inclusion and positive change.

OUR PARTNERS

Our Team Our Partners Our Communities

Expand the diversity of our feeding experts and the medical professionals we partner with to include more BIPOC representation, to ensure that our experts reflect the diversity of the families that we serve. Increase BIPOC representation in our supplier network, including farmers and manufacturers, and within our broader team of agency partners, freelancers, and consultants.

Redefine our mentorship and support programs to better empower our team members from underrepresented backgrounds.

As we examined the work that we needed to do internally to strengthen our team, we also built an online community where we shared resources to facilitate important conversations both on our platforms and in family homes. We invited parents to let us know what we could improve, and what additional support they may need. We’re committed to sharing our progress as we continue to build support and advocate for racial justice.

The family photos seen throughout our mission report were shared by some of the parents we've met on our road trip!

Our road trip began as a way to share the unique perspectives of parenting through pictures from across the country. What it became was a connection that brought strangers closer together in a time of isolation. A way of

communicating not just through words, but through bonded moments.

It’s a slice of life from across the nation, the things we share and those we don't. The wondrously cranky to the sibling love. It's a tapestry of family life, and we’re just getting started.
