The right bank of the Rhine River was once known as the "wrong side." It was home to a lot of factories, surrounded by Turkish immigrant communities facing challenges of soil contamination, limited access to organic food, and cultural integration difficulties. This project, situated in Cologne-Mülheim's industrial zone, revives a century-old, abandoned area into a sustainable Turkish community garden.

PROJECT 1: MYCELIUM REMEDIATE THE WRONG SIDE

Design a mushroom box

Mushrooms and companion plants/ vegetables for purifying

why use mushroom companion plants/ vegetables to purify heavy mental soil instead of just use mushrooms?

While mushrooms are known to be effective in removing heavy metals from contaminated soil, they cannot do so on their own without the necessary nutrients and organic matter in the soil. Companion plants and vegetables can provide these necessary

nutrients and organic matter, creating a more conducive environment for the mushrooms to thrive and do their job of absorbing heavy metals from the soil.

By combining different plants and fungi, the soil can benefit from a range of nutrients, beneficial microbes, and symbiotic relationships, leading to healthier plants and better soil quality.

Sunflowers are planted first

After the sunflowers have completed their growth cycle and have been harvested

White clover
Pea garden radish
Spinach Alfalfa
Common sunflower
Cauliflower Trifolium repens Pisum sativum
Raphanus sativus
Spinacia oleracea
Medicago sativa
Medicago sativa
Brassica oleracea

In general, the efectiveness of bioremediationcan docroaso with incroasing depth of soil contamination. This is because the fungus grows best in the topsoil layer where there is adequate oxygen and nutrients for its growth and degradation of pollutants.

The remediation process for oil-contamninated land typicallyinvolves excavation and removal of contaminated soil, followwed bytreatment or disposal of the soil. In general, contamination may belimiled to the top layer of soil, and only that layer needs to beremoved and treated. contaminated soil contaminated soil

PROJECT 2: SHOULD CITIES EXPAND INTO THE SEA?

Project 2: Hong Kong has been facing a shortage of land. In 2017, the Hong Kong gover nment decided to carry out reclamation near Tolo Harbor, which was strongly opposed by Hong Kong residents. I recorded the development of the whole incident in the form of cartoons and analyzed the pros and cons of reclamation.
