Project 1: 1-14

Project 1 and Project 2 represent different periods of the same site. Project One primarily focuses on the abandoned factory site located on the right bank of the Rhine River. Using mycelium combined with plants possessing purifying properties, the project aims to remediate soil that has long been contaminated by gasoline and engine fuel. A key feature of this project is the design of mycelium boxes, enhancing the viability of mycelium.

Project 2: 15-30

Project 2 is based on the land cleaned during Project 1 and involves a more in-depth design. Drawing inspiration from the traditional and nearly forgotten Turkish cultivation method, Bostans, the project transforms the former abandoned industrial area into a community-oriented planting site for the surrounding Turkish community. The objective is to provide local residents with more organic vegetables, employment opportunities, and recreational spaces.

Project 3: 31-39

The Haringvliet dam in the Dutch delta project closed the estuary, causing ecological damage. This proposal suggests gradually reopening sluices to restore ecology and boost the economy. It focuses on de-engineering water management using beavers and oysters, with industrial transformation for tourism. The approach aims for sustainable nature rehabilitation, leveraging estuary characteristics, and transforming the urban landscape and economy despite resistance from established production chains.

The right bank of the Rhine River was once known as the "wrong side." It was home to a lot of factories, surrounded by Turkish immigrant communities facing challenges of soil contamination, limited access to organic food, and cultural integration difficulties. This project, situated in Cologne-Mülheim's industrial zone, revives a century-old, abandoned area into a sustainable Turkish community garden.

PROJECT 1: MYCELIUM REMEDIATE THE WRONG SIDE

Design a mushroom box

Mushrooms and companion plants/ vegetables for purifying

why use mushroom companion plants/ vegetables to purify heavy mental soil instead of just use mushrooms?

While mushrooms are known to be effective in removing heavy metals from contaminated soil, they cannot do so on their own without the necessary nutrients and organic matter in the soil. Companion plants and vegetables can provide these necessary

nutrients and organic matter, creating a more conducive environment for the mushrooms to thrive and do their job of absorbing heavy metals from the soil.

By combining different plants and fungi, the soil can benefit from a range of nutrients, beneficial microbes, and symbiotic relationships, leading to healthier plants and better soil quality.

In general, the efectiveness of bioremediationcan docroaso with incroasing depth of soil contamination. This is because the fungus grows best in the topsoil layer where there is adequate oxygen and nutrients for its growth and degradation of pollutants.

The remediation process for oil-contamninated land typicallyinvolves excavation and removal of contaminated soil, followwed bytreatment or disposal of the soil. In general, contamination may belimiled to the top layer of soil, and only that layer needs to beremoved and treated. contaminated soil contaminated soil

2: DEVELOPING "BOSTANS" IN TURKISH GERMANS' COMMUNITY

Culture, race, and ethnicity are intricately connected, important social identities in the study of food and food practices because they allow researchers to understand the complex ways that individuals make decisions about food choice. Cooking and eating practices are often not only symbolic but also tangible and concrete ways that ethnic identities are preserved by migrants in multicultural societies (D’Sylva & Beagan, 2011). There is a strong desire to preserve one's culture through food practices especially when one's culture is not the dominant culture in that society (Beoku-Betts, 1995).

Theodosian Wall Bostan

Istanbul’s Bostans

Istanbul's Bostans are historic urban gardens located in the heart of the city. These gardens have been an important part of Istanbul's culture and economy for centuries, providing a source of fresh produce and a place for community gathering.

The Bostans were traditionally small-scale agricultural plots, but today they are organized into larger cooperatives that produce a variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

The gardens feature a mix of Ottoman, Byzantine, and Islamic architectural styles, and many of the gardeners are descendants of the original farmers who tended the land centuries ago.

After the previous series of analyses and planning, at this stage, I have essentially obtained a relatively comprehensive site layout. In the subsequent design phase, I will primarily focus on discussing how this site will be utilized for vegetable cultivation.

Bostans' walls

In the previously existing heritage buildings, there are some with beautiful mullioned windows. These framed structures can create semi-enclosed spaces, providing a more unique ambiance. Furthermore, these frame structures can also support the growth of climbing plants. Appropriately preserving these original walls can enhance the site's distinctive features.

The round arches not only serve a functional purpose by providing structural support but also contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the architecture, adding to the overall visual richness and cultural identity of Turkish design.

Some of the architectural elements, such as the steps and stacked materials like red bricks, will also be partially preserved. The retention of these structures can not only provide visitors with more resting spaces but also reinforce the site's inherent industrial elements. Moreover, it simultaneously incorporates the concept of "walls" from the traditional Turkish bostans cultivation method.

Creating smaller sections within a larger area, it can encourage movement, interaction, and utilization of different areas. Smaller spaces may offer a sense of intimacy and provide opportunities for diverse activities or functions to take place simultaneously.

No concrete foundation required. Due to the absence of concrete, exceeded slab loadings and associated carbon emissions are eliminated. (ref: LOGIC, STAPEL,Product Code: P212, https://logic-bespoke.com/logic-products/stapel-rpe/)

Introduction of fruit trees & street trees

A variety of street trees and fruit trees were selected for the site, all of which can grow healthily in Cologne's climate. At the same time, the state and color of plants in different seasons are considered.

The Sacrifice Feast in Turkey typically takes place during the summer. During this time, many vegetables can be planted, and the variety of vegetables in the gardens will become quite rich. The required lamb meat for the Sacrifice Feast can also be obtained through a network of connections with nearby farms.

PROJECT 3: SHOULD CITIES EXPAND INTO THE SEA?

Project 3: Hong Kong has been facing a shortage of land. In 2017, the Hong Kong gover nment decided to carry out reclamation near Tolo Harbor, which was strongly opposed by Hong Kong residents. I recorded the development of the whole incident in the form of cartoons and analyzed the pros and cons of reclamation.
