Trade works for Pennsylvania. Tariffs don't.
New tariffs are threatening to spark a global trade war. Canada, Mexico, the EU, and China have already retaliated or announced plans to retaliate with billions of dollars in tariffs on Americanmade products. Tariffs imposed by the United States are nothing more than a tax increase on American consumers and businesses, including manufacturers, farmers, and technology companies, who will all pay more for commonly used products and materials. Retaliatory tariffs imposed by other countries on U.S. exports will make American-made goods more expensive, resulting in lost sales and ultimately lost jobs here at home. This is the wrong approach, and it threatens to derail our nation's recent economic resurgence. Ambassador Sponsor Workforce Spotlight Elsner Engineering Works, Inc. team member, Daniel Danner, found his passion for welding in 2015 when he was given the opportunity to learn from seasoned welder, Peter Truesdale. “I’m thankful for the mentorship I’ve been given at ELSNER,” said Daniel. “Now, I’m excited to transfer that knowledge to younger students and help them become the best welders they can be.” Daniel, a former graduate of the KLK School of Welding, has recently taken on the additional role of part-time evening instructor with the company. “It’s through the collaboration of local businesses such as ELSNER and KLK, as well as efforts like the apprenticeship program, that will teach future generations the skills needed to succeed in manufacturing,” Daniel commented. Congratulations to Daniel on a successful start to a fulfilling career in welding!

Chamber Hosts Annual Christmas Luncheon; Awards First Pre-Apprentice
The Chamber’s annual Christmas Luncheon was held on Friday, December 14 at the Hanover Country Club. During lunch, chamber members enjoyed seeing members of Pennsylvania Labor & Industry, the Department of Community Economic Development, as well as representatives from South Western School District and Elsner Engineering as they congratulated Zach Neighoff, the first graduate of the Hanover Apprenticeship Program. Neighoff started working as a paid apprentice at Elsner Engineering Works after graduating from South Western School District in spring of 2018. South Western career counselor Lisa Dennis is proud of Zach and all he has accomplished at the start of his career, "Zach always seemed to be so appreciative of the opportunity to participate in a pre-apprenticeship program. He went into this whole-heartedly and took advantage of this great experience. He has certainly set the standard for future candidates and he has been a great first pre-apprentice for our school and the Hanover community. We are extremely proud of Zach and look forward to following his career progression at Elsner." The HACC Foundation recently named Professor Geri Gutwein, Ph.D., recipient of the Bruce E. Cooper, Esq. Leadership Award for her accomplishments and contributions to HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
These six associates completed all tasks, courses and exams necessary in pursuit of the following degrees and professional designations: Master’s Degree in Public Health Administration and Emergency Services, Associate in Claims (AIC), Certified Insurance Service Representative (CISR-Elite), Associate in Risk Management (ARM) and Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS).

Gutwein, a professor of English and reading at HACC’s Harrisburg Campus, was recognized for her leadership of the reading team. She also was recognized for her help in streamlining reading developmental courses. This change is significant for students, who will save both time and money. Gutwein led a comprehensive review of placement testing in preparation for a new placement tool implemented this fall for HACC students admitted for the spring 2019 term. She also coordinated the reading discipline’s review of curriculum texts to ensure they are accessible to students in a variety of formats, independent of disability accommodation. This project was part of the English Department’s efforts to ensure students have access to materials that fit their learning preferences and budgetary needs. Additionally, Gutwein led the approval of a pathway giving adjunct faculty voting rights in the business of the reading discipline.
