Chamber Recognizes Hanover Area Business Awards The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce held its Annual Business Awards Ceremony on Thurs., Nov. 3 at Bay City Restaurant. The event was presented by APPI Energy and Hanover Hospital. In addition to naming Educators of the Year, Positive Action Award, Small Business of the Year and Entrepreneur of the Year, the Chamber recognized outgoing Treasurer, Nat Fissel from Smith Elliott Kearns & Co. Fissel served on the Chamber Board of Directors for 6 years, spending 5 of those years as treasurer. Competitors from Ability Prosthetics & Orthotics, Inc., winners of the 2016 Corporate Challenge, were presented with the travelling trophy by last year’s winning team, Stambaugh Ness. Proceeds from the Corporate Challenge benefitted the Chamber’s Workforce Development programs. Gary Laird, President, Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, recognized Member Anniversaries including 5 years: Desco Services, DOCEO Creative Group, iNet Technology Group, Rick’s Screen Printing, St. Marks Evangelical Lutheran Church and Stock and Leader Attorneys at Law; 10 years: AquaPhoenix Scientific and Columbia Cottage; 15 years: BELCO Community Credit Union, The Palms Dry Cleaning and TREYSTA Technology Management- Gettysburg; and 25 years: Champion Mazda, Crabbs & Crabbs, Guthrie Memorial Library, Laurel Hill Kennels and Re/Max Quality Service. The 2016 Educators of the Year were recognized by their respective superintendents: Caryn Flaherty, South Western School District; Katherine Walton, Hanover Public School District; Nancy Duffy, Delone Catholic High School; Anne Shaffer, Spring Grove Area

School District; Melissa Gantz, Conewago Valley School District. Event sponsor Michael Gaskins, President & CEO of Hanover Hospital, presented the Positive Action Award to Hanover Public School District for the S.T.E.A.M. Academy at Hanover High School. The Positive Action Award is given to an organization or business that positively contributes to meeting the needs of the Hanover region and work together with community members toward a cooperative vision that suggests ways to manage growth. Based on the tremendous success of the implementation of a Metals and Welding program at the High School in 2014, along with the addition of several new AP course offerings, the district set forth on a new endeavor for the 2016-17 school year, to develop a S.T.E.A.M. Academy. S.T.E.A.M., standing for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, provides 14 new courses for students to choose, using state of the art equipment and technology, taught in a hands-on, project based learning environment.
