In light of the current conditions concerning COVID-19 (Coronavirus), the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce is closed until further notice. During this time, our staff will be working remotely and can be contacted via phone or email. You can find a staff directory on our website at www.hanoverchamber.com/ staff. In addition, all events and meetings scheduled for April have been cancelled. This includes our monthly Eye Opener Breakfast, workforce meetings, municipal meetings, and HAYP Happy Hour events. We will continue to monitor the situation over the next few weeks and will make announcements about the status of future events. The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce is devoted to helping businesses throughout the Hanover Area. Now that the coronavirus has made its way to our area, local businesses are inquiring about information to be prepared to help their company, their employees and
their families. We’ve rounded up several resources that may be of use to our members. Please find them on our website at www. hanoverchamber.com/blog/covid19-update. In addition, please consider joining our new Facebook group: Hanover PA Stronger Together. This group serves to connect businesses and community members in the Greater Hanover Area during the COVID-19 crisis. Anyone can share information on business hours, services, helpful resources, etc. Finally, please feel free to send information or news regarding your business to Emily Freiert at efreiert@hanoverchamber.com so we can share it on social media. Summer Volunteers Needed
May Legislative Roundtable
The Hanover Chamber is seeking volunteers for the Annual Golf Outing on June 4, Snack Town Brewfest on June 20, and the Hanover Dutch Festival on July 25. Volunteer shifts are available at various times and for a wide assortment of tasks, like setup, admission, cleanup and more.
Join us on Friday, May 1 at 7:30 a.m. for a Legislative Roundtable! This event will take place at Dutch Country Restaurant located at 946 Baltimore Street.
Groups are welcome, and encouraged, as a great way to promote your business or organization! All volunteers (with organization names) will appear in our newsletter following the event, and on our website. If you are interested in volunteering for any of our summer events, please contact Haley Briggs at (717) 637-6130 or hbriggs@hanoverchamber.com.
As always, we welcome your input as we create an agenda that focuses on issues facing the Hanover area. HR Seminar: Top 10 Employee Handbook Topics
By Leslie Elsner Bell, Senior Human Resources Consultant, Elsner Bell & Associates, LLC If it has been more than a year since your business has reviewed its Employee Handbook, it’s time to see whether your day-today business practices have deviated from your actual written policies. The start of the year also brings with it ever-changing regulations, at the federal, state, and local level, that need to be addressed. Businesses with locations in multiple states have the added burden to understand any new requirements in order to stay compliant. Of course, there are employment policies in the news daily — think “#MeToo.” If you have not recently updated your Sexual Harassment/Workplace Harassment policy in the recent past, it’s certainly time. Another time-sensitive topic is how your organization’s Equal Employment Opportunity policy addresses gender identity issues. Businesses are being advised to include the term “gender identity or expression” or “gender identity” in their nondiscrimination policies. Let’s not forget about Weapons in the Workplace and Social Media and Networking. Even if your Employee Handbook has language on these topics, regulations and case law may have changed how the policy should be written. Your Employee Handbook is as unique as your business. It is not a one-size fits all, as the number of employees you have affects the topics you must cover. For instance, the Family Medical Leave Act should be in a company’s handbook only if the business has 50 or more employees within a 75-mile radius. Many Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce businesses have a presence in Maryland and must straddle both sets of state laws. In the recent past, Maryland enacted the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act (also referred to as the Maryland Sick and Safe Leave Act) that requires all Maryland employers to provide sick and safe leave to eligible employees.
Another “hot” topic for Employee Handbooks is marijuana in the workplace. Does your Drug and Alcohol Policy require voluntary disclosure of medical marijuana or any other controlled substance if the employee is in a safety-sensitive position? As you know, this landscape is ever-evolving and there is not much case law to help businesses navigate the uncharted terrain. To learn the most significant changes that businesses need to address in order to maintain an up-to-date Employee Handbook, please join us for the Top Ten Employee Handbook Topics on April 21 from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. This seminar costs $50. Ambassador Spotlight
Our 2020 Ambassador Committee held its first meeting last month to discuss goals for the new year. The Chamber Ambassador Committee is a volunteer group of recognized professionals who interact with current and potential chamber members to provide information and answer questions about the chamber. Their job is to serve as an additional resource and communication link between the chamber and its members. The mission of the committee is to promote the Hanover Chamber of Commerce through various meetings and events, serving as official chamber representatives. This committee greatly helps to support Haley Briggs, Director of Membership & Events, with member involvement, recruitment and retention. Interested in joining? This month, Chamber President Gary Laird will be participating in the Career Ready PA Coalition Kick-off at Dixon University Center in Harrisburg. The Pennsylvania Department of Education Career Ready PA Coalition Kick-off will bring together education and workforce champions from across the state and provide strategic opportunities to advance career pathways for all learners. Participants include regional stakeholders from education, advocacy and non-profit organizations, business and industry, STEM Ecosystems, workforce, military, libraries, and state and local government agencies. Laird will be representing Region 9 as a stakeholder to finalize a statewide mission and vision for the Career Ready PA Coalition, identify a statewide priority for career readiness, and identify a regional priority for career readiness.

Hanover Rotary Club Mission Trip
Stand Against Racism with YWCA
In February, a Hanover Rotary Club-sponsored group departed for New Bern, NC to assist with rebuilding hurricane flooded homes. The group, led by Hanover Rotarian Peg Sennett, previously traveled to the area in July 2019 to assist in rebuilding two homes. Spring Grove based Bailey Coach donated the use of their Rotarythemed coach to transport the group to and from New Bern, NC.
Youth mentors from YWCA Hanover’s Girls Loving Life program support diversity & inclusion while wearing their Stand Against Racism shirts.
Hurricane Florence hit New Bern in September 2018 causing over 100 million dollars in damage to the area.

ACNB BANK PROMOTES THREE OFFICERS TO SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT ACNB Bank has promoted three officers to Senior Vice President including Kevin Hayes, Gary Rappoldt and Merle Zehr. Hayes joined ACNB Bank in 2015 as Vice President/General Counsel. In his role as General Counsel, he is responsible for providing legal counsel and representation to ACNB Bank on general corporate, banking, real estate, commercial, trust and investment, and regulatory matters. Rappoldt joined ACNB Bank in 2008 as Vice President/ Commercial Loan Officer and has more than 26 years of banking experience with 20 years focused specifically on commercial lending. In his current role as Regional Commercial Lending Manager, he is responsible for a team of commercial lenders and works to meet the commercial banking needs of business customers located throughout the counties of Adams, Cumberland and Franklin in southcentral Pennsylvania.
Zehr joined ACNB Bank in 2008 as Vice President/Commercial Loan Officer. Zehr has 29 years of banking experience, with the majority of those years in the commercial lending arena. In his current role as Regional Commercial Lending Manager, he is responsible for a team of commercial lenders and works to meet the commercial banking needs of business customers in Hanover, York, Lancaster and the surrounding markets. HANOVER AREA HUMAN RESOURCE ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES OFFICERS FOR 2020 The Human Resource Association (HAHRA) is proud to announce the Officers for 2020. Kremenik joined HAHRA in 2005. She began as a volunteer on the Membership Committee and currently serves as the Committee’s Co-Chair. She has been in
the HR field for 15 years. For the last nine years, she has been with Flowserve Corporation working as a HR Business Partner. Swartz joined HAHRA in 2014. She serves on the HAHRA Professional Development Committee. Swartz is the UPMC Operations Specialist for Employer Programs and Business Development. She has been with UPMC, formally Hanover Hospital, since 2004 and has been in multiple positions over the last 15 years. Smith joined Elsner Engineering Works, Inc. in 2018 as the HR Manager. She has been a member of HAHRA since 2016 and serves as the co-chair to the Workforce Development Committee in addition to her new role as Treasurer. Zinn has worked with WellSpan Health as a Regional Human Resources Director and holds her Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and SHRM-CP certifications. Zinn joined HAHRA in 2016 and serves as the chair to the Legislative Committee.
