To commemorate this collaboration, we put together a feature article with our county's new "have it made here" brand in mind, "Making History" on page 28. This is one of our favorite articles to-date, as we find Hanover's innovative history to be so fascinating! Founded in 1763, Hanover has a vibrant past filled with commerce, and we're eager to share it. Read on to learn about our world-famous creations and the industry leaders who call Hanover home. Our cover photo was taken by one of our former interns and Hanover High School graduate, Sierra Stevens. Sierra snapped this shot in Center Square last year on a crisp spring day. Flowers were just beginning to bloom all around town, with the promise of summer—and fun summer events—just around the corner. Notice the architecture; isn't it beautiful? Our downtown houses many eye-catching buildings, several of which are currently undergoing revitalization. Turn to page 32 to learn more about these projects to preserve history in the heart of Hanover. Looking for a quick read? Flip over to the calendar of events on pages 6 and 7 for a complete listing of all the happenings in Hanover throughout the year. 2020 marks my third year as editor of Discover Hanover®, and each year just keeps getting better. Putting together a publication of this size takes time, research, and passion. After all the work that goes into it, I'm so proud to place my name on this page alongside the many other individuals who help make this possible. Hanover is my hometown, the place where I've chosen to create a career for myself, and the space where my heart feels whole. SPRING St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl—March 14 Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a festive pub crawl! This fundraising event supports For the Love of a Veteran, Inc. Free Rita’s Italian Ice—March 19 Visit Rita’s Ice of Hickory Falls for a free Italian ice on the first day of spring. Paws in the Park Doggy Egg Hunt—April 4 Bring your pup to the West Manheim Recreational Park for a furry Easter egg hunt. The event begins at 10:30 a.m. and ends when all eggs have been collected. Easter Egg Hunt at Codorus State Park—April 10 Codorus State Park will be holding an Easter celebration from 4-5 p.m. near the pavilions in the swimming pool area. Activities include making crafts, hunting for eggs, and meeting the Easter Bunny. Hanover Community Easter Egg Hunt—April 11 Enjoy a morning of fun at Moul Field! The egg hunt will begin at 2:30 p.m. A special needs egg hunt will also be held at 12:30 p.m. Memorial Day Parade—May 25 Honor our veterans at Hanover’s Memorial Day Parade! The parade begins at 8:30 a.m. at Chestnut and Carlisle Streets and will end at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
SUMMER Codorus Blast Festival in the Park—June 12–June 14 Relax on a pontoon, take a helicopter ride, and enjoy a night of fireworks – all at the Codorus Blast Festival! Sunshine, Sip, & Stroll—June 13 Enjoy a variety of beer, wine, and cider, as you stroll through downtown Hanover visiting shops and listening to live music. 4th Annual Snack Town Brewfest—June 20 With cold beer, salty snacks, and great entertainment, Snack Town Brewfest is an event you won’t want to miss! Proceeds support programs that benefit the greater Hanover area. Liberty Day—July 4 Celebrate Independence Day with the Hanover Borough! Festivities include the Liberty Day 10K, family games, music, food, and fireworks. 37th Annual Hanover Dutch Festival—July 25 Join in on the long-standing tradition of the Hanover Dutch Festival! Enjoy a variety of food and music as you shop the 300+ street vendors. Chili Cookoff —September 6 Taste award-winning chili and support a good cause at the Chili Cookoff held at Good Field from 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Sauce Boss Throwdown featuring Chalk It Up—September 12 This full-day event features a wing sauce competition and the Chalk It Up chalk art competition, making it perfect for all ages. Activities begins at 9 a.m. in Center Square.
FALL Cornfusion Corn Maze—September 12-early November Located just south of Hanover in nearby Manchester, Maryland, Cornfusion offers a variety of family fun activities including two corn mazes, a petting zoo, hayrides, pumpkin patches, and so much more. Wine Tasting on the Hill—September 26-27 Join the West Manheim Township Lions Club and the Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Company for a weekend full of great music and wine. Spooky Spirits—October 9 Experience a spooky Friday night in downtown Hanover! Ticketholders are encouraged to wear their favorite costumes as they taste beer, cider, and wine offered by participating businesses. Halloween in the Park—October 23-24 Located in Codorus State Park, Halloween in the Park is a two-day event featuring trick-or-treat at 90 incredibly decorated camp sites, hayrides, food vendors, a s'mores shop, nature tent, and more. Looking for an activity for furry kids? Halloween in the Park also features a pet parade! Hanover Halloween Parade—October 29 Watch fantastic floats, bands, and performances make their way down Baltimore Street into downtown Hanover. The parade starts at 7:30 p.m., but we suggest arriving earlier to reserve a good spot!
WINTER Annual Christmas Parade—November 27 Kick off the holiday season in downtown Hanover as Santa journeys toward his new cabin! The parade starts at 9 a.m., allowing plenty of time for a visit with Santa afterward. Santa’s Cabin—November 27–December 23 Come visit one of Hanover’s oldest traditions! With free photos, holiday treats, and a chance to meet the big man himself, a visit to Santa’s cabin will surely bring a smile to your child’s face. Christmas Tree Lighting—November 28 Sip hot cocoa and listen to carolers as Hanover lights the Christmas tree for the holiday season! The ceremony will begin at 6 p.m. Tree Tours at Warehime-Myers Mansion—November 28-January 1 Enjoy over 40 Christmas trees at the Hanover Area Historical Society's Warehime-Myers Mansion. Admission is $5, and children are admitted free with accompanying adults. Tree Wars—November 28–January 1 Downtown businesses compete for the most unique Christmas tree in this festive tradition. Pick up a passport and vote for your favorite entry for a chance to win a prize! Cookie Stroll—December 12 Stop by participating downtown stores and restaurants to taste cookies and shop, just in time for the gift-giving season! The stroll will begin at 1 p.m. and will last until 4 p.m.

Adventure Awaits
Whether you are feeling adventurous or are looking for tranquility, Hanover’s best nature-based attractions have it all. Experience a full day of fun at Codorus State Park and Long Arm Reservoir, take a scenic walk along the Hanover Trolley Trail, or discover your inner explorer on the Hanover Geo Trail. Codorus State Park | Marina Dr. | (717) 637-8000 Hanover is home to Codorus State Park, conveniently located just a couple of miles from Downtown Hanover. With 3,500 acres of forests, fields, wetlands, and a lake, Codorus is sure to please nature lovers of all ages. Once home to the Susquehannock Indians and German settlers, Codorus is rich in history. In the mid-1700s, Mary Ann Furnace, believed to be the first charcoal furnace west of the Susquehanna River, operated in what is part of the present-day park. The furnace produced cannon balls and grapeshot for the Continental Army. Codorus began to take its present form after the state acquired the land in the mid1960s, and the park officially opened in 1970. For those visiting in the warmer seasons, Codorus has both water and land-based activities. Spend the day on Lake Marburg, a man-made lake extending across the entire park. The lake is the perfect place for fishing, boating, and kayaking. 10 discoverHANOVER 2020
Codorus also boasts 19 miles of trails for visitors who prefer to remain on land. There are trails for hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Visiting Codorus State Park is not only a warm weather activity; the park is also a prime destination for winter sports. Codorus offers 6.5 miles of trails for skiing and snowmobiling as well as multiple slopes for sledding and a designated iceskating area. Long Arm Reservoir | 53 Grand Valley Rd. | (717) 637-3877 If you are looking for a quieter natural destination in Hanover, be sure to check out Long Arm Reservoir. The park is an ideal destination for birdwatching, fishing, kayaking, and picnicking. In addition, the park is well-known for its sunsets and is also a perfect location for stargazing. Please note that the park closes after dark, so those wishing to remain after sunset will need to submit a formal request to the Borough of Hanover. Visitors can only stay in the park after permission has been granted.
Hanover Trolley Trail | 403 Moul Ave.| yorkcountytrails.org Looking for a way to squeeze in some exercise during your visit to Hanover? Check out the Hanover Trolley Trail, a popular destination for walking, running, and biking.
VISIT
A trolley once ran between Hanover and York, providing transportation for both business and leisure passengers; however, the growing popularity of the automobile eventually led to the trolley's demise. Although there is no active trolley in sight today, the historical significance of the trail is preserved in its new incarnation as a recreation destination. A two-mile stretch of the trail is located in Penn Township and the Hanover Borough, extending from Moul Field to Gitts Run Road. Parking is available at Moul Field. Hanover Geo Trail | Downtown Hanover | (717) 637-6130 If the inner explorer in you is itching to come out, give the Hanover Geo Trail a try! Geocaching is an ideal way to explore popular destinations in Hanover while also experiencing some of the less traveled parts of town. The Hanover Geo Trail features over 20 caches located in Downtown Hanover, West Manheim Park, and Codorus State Park. Official passports for the trail are available at mainstreethanover.org. Come out and enjoy the natural side of Hanover today!

Although the center has a membership program, you don’t need to be a member to participate in their classes. Non-members simply pay a flat fee per class. A mecca of industry and invention since its humble beginning over 250 years ago, Hanover remains a center of innovation and development. Follow us as we take you on a tour of Hanover’s “have it made here” history: learn about several inventions that originated in our town, find out which snack food companies call Hanover home, get to know Hanover’s leaders of industry, and find out how you can plan your next visit to see the history of our makers firsthand!
INVENTIONS OF HANOVER Hanover’s leaders of past and present have always had pioneering and efficiency in mind. Keep reading to learn about several Hanover inventions that have received nationwide, and in some cases, worldwide recognition. Mary Ann Furnace Although it is no longer standing, the Mary Ann Furnace, located in present-day Codorus State Park, is believed to be the first charcoal furnace west of the Susquehanna River. Built in the mid-1700s by Mark Bird and George Ross, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, the furnace once provided cannon balls and grapeshot for George Washington’s Continental Army. Today, visitors to Codorus can enjoy hiking on the Mary Ann Furnace Trail. A historical marker is located near the original site of the furnace. 28 discoverHANOVER 2020
Hanover Car While Hanover has produced many successful inventions over the years, it is only fair to mention a much less successful, yet still significant invention from Hanover: the Hanover car (pictured above). Established in 1921, the Hanover Motor Company had locations in Hanover and Buffalo, NY. The company made two types of the Hanover car: a two-seat roadster and a two-seat delivery truck. Due to mechanical problems, including uncertain stopping and “hopping” around corners, the company only produced several hundred cars. By 1927, the company was out of business, marking the end of Hanover’s brief connection to the automotive production industry. Very few of the cars exist today, but luckily, a local museum has one on display. Take a short drive to the Agricultural & Industrial Museum in York to see a 1922 Hanover Roadster for yourself.

MAKING HISTORY
I-X-L Water Wheel Founded in the 1800s, the Fitz Water Wheel Company operated out of Hanover. The company developed and manufactured the I-X-L steel overshoot water wheel. By 1915, the Fitz I-X-L water wheel was used in over 300 mills in Pennsylvania, the United States, and throughout the world. Because of its superior efficiency, companies used the wheel well into the 20th century. Hanover Wire Cloth Company In 1903, William Kintzing, a local mechanic, invented a specialized loom that allowed the Hanover Wire Cloth Company to produce insect screen cloth. With this invention, the company became a leading producer during the 20th century. The screen cloth proved crucial during World War II as soldiers used it to protect themselves from malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Additionally, the Hanover Wire Cloth Company produced pure nickel cloth used in the Manhattan Project during World War II. According to an August 1945 article from The Evening Sun, the company received the Army-Navy “E” Award, presented to companies who achieved “Excellence in Production” of war equipment.

Emeco 1006 Navy Chair A common target for knockoffs today, Emeco developed its famous 1006 Navy Chair (pictured below) during World War II. William Carlyle Dinges founded Emeco, which stands for Electrical Machine and Equipment Company, in Hanover in 1944. The 1006 Navy Chair quickly became the company's most famous product. Originally used by sailors and often found on warships because of its durability, the chair can now be found anywhere from offices to homes. The process to make the chair includes 77 individual steps, setting it apart from its competitors. Over the years, Emeco has kept the original design fresh through various collaborations and commissions, including a version of the chair made of repurposed materials. If you’re in the market for a chair and are considering a 1006 Navy Chair, Greg Buchbinder, the CEO of Emeco, notes how to ensure you are getting an authentic chair, “To spot an authentic Emeco chair, you can see the smooth bends where the soft aluminum is curved, the consistent brush pattern always applied the same way, the perfectly tapered front legs, the even spread of the three vertical bars for the seat back, the Emeco name on the back of the seat bottom, and finally, the three small welds left by the craftsmen as their signature on every 1006 Navy chair.”

SNACKS OF HANOVER Beyond inventions, Hanover is also well-known for its local snack food manufacturers. In fact, Hanover and surrounding York County are often called the “Snack Food Capital of the World.” That’s a big title to live up to, but with major snack food companies including Utz and Snyder’s calling Hanover home, the title seems to fit well! Hanover's snacking history is so well-known that our town has received recognition from the "Food Network" numerous times. Utz Quality Foods William & Salie Utz started making chips in their kitchen in 1921. The couple sold chips to local grocers and markets during the early years. From these humble beginnings, a successful company emerged. Utz built its first plant in 1930, and by 1947, the company incorporated as Utz Potato Chip Company, Inc. Expansion and automation continued throughout the coming decades. Over time, the company expanded its offerings to include other snacks such as popcorn, cheese curls, and tortilla chips. Beginning in the 1980s, Utz began to extend into other east coast markets. Utz now produces products under other brands names including Zapp’s, Dirty, Bachman Company, and Golden Flake. Utz is the largest independent, privately held snack brand in the U.S. In 2019, the company expanded their national footprint further, serving as the presenting sponsor of Major League Baseball’s National League Division Series. Want to see how Utz produces over 3.3 million pounds of snacks per week? The company currently offers a free “Utz Chip Trip Tour.” The tour is self-guided and features a push-to-talk audio program that guides visitors through the process of making potato chips. There is also a wall display to help visitors understand the history of the company. Tours are available Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Snyder’s of Hanover Another leader in the snack food industry, Snyder’s of Hanover’s roots go back to the early 1900s. In the 1920s, Grandma Eda and Edward Snyder started selling their homemade fried potato chips door to door, at fairs, and at local markets while their son and his wife made and sold angel food cake. The two merged to form Snyder’s Bakery in 1924. In 1909, Harry Warehime began making Olde Tyme Pretzels. In 1961, Harry’s family acquired Snyder’s Bakery. At the time of the acquisition, the Warehimes were also running Hanover Canning Company. In 1980, the companies separated into Snyder’s of Hanover and Hanover Brands so each company could better focus on its individual industry. Hanover Brands,

now commonly known as Hanover Foods, specializes in canned, frozen, fresh, and snack food items. The company is the only privately held, fully-integrated, kosher-certified food processor in the nation. Over the past few decades, Snyder’s has continued to expand its offerings to include more sweet and salty flavors such as chocolate covered pretzels and gluten-free pretzels. If you are interested in seeing how Snyder’s makes their pretzels, the company offers free tours for those ages 5 and up. In addition to Utz and Snyder’s, Hanover is home to several other snack brands. Wege and Revonah Pretzels both call Hanover their home. Wege, named after a family who made bread and rolls during the late 1800s, continues to produce delicious sourdough hard pretzels. The company is now part of Hanover Foods and is known as the originator of the “Poker Pretzel” – a fun snack featuring pretzels shaped like card suits.
Revonah Pretzels are another local staple. Even today, Revonah makes each pretzel by hand before baking in an old-fashioned oven. Revonah offers a variety of pretzel flavors ranging from classic to “xtra” salt to whole wheat and honey. Wondering how the company got its name? Revonah is simply Hanover spelled backwards!
LEADERS OF INDUSTRY Legacy Athletic Started in 1992 by roommates Mark Landgren and Paige Wingert, Legacy began as a quest to find the “perfect-fitting, retro-inspired hat.” What started with a simple mission has grown to include high-quality headwear, apparel, home décor, and fashion accessories influenced by vintage style with a modern spin. The company currently services four major markets: collegiate, resort and destination, corporate, and golf. Legacy ships products throughout the U.S. In 2018, Legacy merged with fellow Pennsylvania-based company League to form L2 Brands. Hanover Shoe Company Although no longer operating under the same name, the Hanover Shoe Company made significant contributions to the local community and the shoe industry. Harper D. Shepard and C.N. Myers took charge of the Hanover Shoe Company on December 26, 1899 with a common vision: sell the best shoes at an unbeatable price of only $2.50 a pair. The duo took the industry by storm, challenging popular sales methods at the time by eliminating the middleman and selling directly to the public. They opened their first store in York, PA in June of 1900, and within fifteen years, the Hanover Shoe Company had 61 stores from Indianapolis to New York City. The original Hanover Shoe Factory closed its doors in 1974, and the name and right to manufacture Hanover Shoes was purchased by C. & J. Clark Ltd. (the British firm of Clarks shoes) in 1978. Years later in 1996, Clarks moved the production of Hanover shoes to West Virginia. Parts of the original factory are still visible today as the Residences of Hanover Shoe, an apartment complex located on Carlisle Street. Looking to buy your own "Hanover" shoes? DID YOU KNOW? Thomas Jefferson stayed overnight in “McAlister’s Town” (as Hanover was once known) in mid-1776 on his way to Philadelphia to begin his work on the Declaration of Independence. On his way to Gettysburg to deliver his famous Gettysburg Address, President Abraham Lincoln greeted the citizens of Hanover from the back platform of a train on November 18, 1863. Several hundred people gathered to watch. Hanover has also hosted presidents George Washington and Richard Nixon. St. Matthew Lutheran Church on Chestnut Street houses one of the top ten largest pipe organs in the world. Often overlooked due to the fame of nearby Gettysburg, Hanover played a little-known, yet significant role in the Civil War. The Battle of Hanover prevented Officer J.E.B. Stuart and his men from arriving at the beginning of the battle, which may have factored into the Confederate Army’s eventual loss at Gettysburg. When the water levels are low at Lake Marburg, located in Codorus State Park, visitors may catch a glimpse of building foundations. The lake gets its name from a small community named Marburg, which was located where the present-day lake is prior to Codorus Creek’s damming in the mid-1960s. Actresses Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie filmed a scene for the movie “Girl, Interrupted” (1999) in the bowling alley located in the basement of the Sheppard Mansion. Parts of the film were also shot in nearby Mechanicsburg and Harrisburg. Well-known horse breeder Hanover Shoe Farms set the world's top earnings record of $21,372,418 for its colts and fillies (regardless of breed).

Downtown Hanover is a hub of activity, thanks to the efforts of individuals in the local community, local businesses, and organizations such as Main Street Hanover. Founded in 2013, Main Street Hanover (MSH) is a collaboration between the Hanover Borough and the Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce. Over the past seven years, MSH has played a key role in the revitalization of Downtown Hanover through various events and initiatives.
DOWNTOWN EVENTS MSH and local businesses hold events year-round to encourage both locals and visitors to patronize downtown businesses. Around 3,000 people have visited downtown during MSH events over the past seven years, and over 6,000 additional people have visited Downtown Hanover for Christmas activities during the past two years. In 2020, visitors can look forward to more signature downtown events including 2nd Saturdays and Sip & Stroll. Looking for something to do with the whole family? 2nd Saturdays are a great option. Every 2nd Saturday of the month— and some Fridays too—MSH and downtown business owners invite the community and visitors to experience Downtown Hanover. 2nd Saturdays vary from month to month with themes, exclusive deals, and activities sure to please all ages. MSH events include Main Street Mini Golf, Elf Scavenger Hunt, Chalk it Up, and more. Looking for some adults-only fun? Come out for one of MSH’s Sip & Stroll events! While Downtown Hanover is not yet what it once was, it is surely becoming a destination for locals and visitors alike. Many business owners have opened their first business, relocated to the downtown area, or expanded their current downtown location over the past few years. Because of this growth, Downtown Hanover is a hub of small businesses including breweries, restaurants, and shops. The number of businesses in the area continues to grow annually. In 2020, the ongoing revitalization effort will continue with major projects at the McAllister Hotel and the former Montgomery Ward building. Located at 11 and 12 York St., the McAllister building, originally a hotel, is undergoing a transformation. When the project concludes, the McAllister will feature 30 high-end apartments with underground parking. The building will also house a new restaurant with outdoor patio seating and a coffee shop. The Montgomery Ward building at 34 Frederick St. is also receiving some much-needed TLC. This historic building, which once housed a department store, received a Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant from the state of Pennsylvania in 2018. This grant will help transform the building, vacant for over a decade, into a modern commercial and residential building. Additionally, the alley to the right of the building will become a patio to provide more open-air seating in the downtown district. The McAllister and Montgomery Ward projects are part of an ongoing effort to preserve the history of Downtown Hanover while also providing new opportunities for businesses and individuals to thrive. Streetscaping and façade improvements are two of the key areas of focus for MSH, and the organization will continue to work on these areas over the coming years.
PRESERVING HISTORY Another forthcoming addition to downtown is the Heart of Hanover Walking Trail. Presented by MSH with support from local historians, writers, Guthrie Memorial Public Library, and the Hanover Area Historical Society, the new walking trail will feature updated wayside markers telling the stories of the Hanover community during the Civil War. The tour will provide visitors with a better understanding of Hanover’s contributions to the war as they explore our downtown district on foot. Maintaining the Foundation of Hanover Through Workforce Development
Local industry is the backbone of the Hanover community. It strengthens our economy, provides jobs for our residents, and now, provides our students with skills to last a lifetime. With the launch of the Hanover Apprenticeship Program in 2017, Hanover’s leaders hope to sustain our manufacturing base for years to come.
The goal of the Hanover Apprenticeship Program is to connect employers with youth in the community who could become future employees. Through this initiative, students learn about sustainable job opportunities right in their own "backyard," thus bridging the gap between education and business.
Employers across the nation have suffered from a lack of skilled workers over the past few decades. While there are many factors that can be attributed to this trend, one of the most common is a lack of emphasis on the importance of trades and skilled labor. Many high schools steer their students toward four-year colleges and universities, largely ignoring the need for skilled laborers with specific skill sets. As a result, jobs remain unfilled, often because there are no workers with the necessary training needed to fill these roles. This issue continues to increase as the current workforce ages.
The program allows local high school students from Hanover Public, South Western, and Conewago Valley school districts to begin as pre-apprentices during their junior year of high school. Each student's experience is structured around their school curriculum and available work hours. Upon graduation, they have the opportunity to enter the workforce as a paid apprentice.
The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce began implementing strategies to educate and develop the future workforce over 15 years ago. Most recently, the Chamber and four local manufacturing companies (Elsner Engineering Works, KLK Welding, R.H. Sheppard, and Utz Quality Foods) celebrated the approval of the Hanover Apprenticeship Program in 2017. The program was the first Chamber Apprenticeship Model approved in the state of Pennsylvania.
In 2018, the program celebrated its first student to complete a pre-apprenticeship within the cirriculum, Zach Neighoff. A 2018 graduate of South Western School District, Neighoff was also the first student in the state of Pennsylvania to complete a machining pre-apprenticeship. He is currently employed full-time at Elsner Engineering Works. Moving forward, the Chamber, local industry, and education leaders will continue to ensure that the Hanover community has access to a variety of workforce development opportunities. With continued support, industry will continue to be part of the foundation of the Hanover community, just as it has been for the past 250 years. discoverHANOVER 2020 35
