NEWSLETTER 2024- 2025 CARE BELGIUM
A word from our president
In 2025, we will be celebrating 10 years of CARE Belgium, which has taken its place in the landscape of humanitarian aid in Belgium Since its creation, CARE Belgium has supported a large range of projects, including promoting of women's work, supporting for economic recovery and responding to climate change
The CARE International network was founded in 1945 at the end of the Second World War to provide support to war-torn Europe by sending humanitarian packages (basic foodstuffs and medical equipment) known as ‘CARE packages’ This is how the expression ‘CARE Package’ came into being, helping millions of people to rebuild their lives. Today, CARE has established itself as one of the world's largest humanitarian networks.
Since its creation, the social missions supported by CARE Belgium have amounted to more than two million euros In 2021, a partnership was signed with Enabel (the Belgian federal government's development agency)
We have been mandated by Enabel for two new projects, in Palestine and the DRC for the years 2024-2027 Thanks to our donors and the resources raised at our Gala in June 2024, we have also supported projects in Benin, Lebanon, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Romania and Togo
Our next Gala will take place on Thursday 12 June 2025 at the Palais d'Egmont in Brussels We hope to see many of you there to support CARE Belgium's projects
On behalf of all the members of the Board of Directors of CARE Belgium, I would like to thank all the donors who have supported us over the years.
Yours sincerely.

PRINCESS ESMERALDA OF BELGIUM, Honorary President of CARE Belgium
This year, I had the honour of taking part in the very first advocacy event organised by CARE Belgium entitled “CLIMATE CHANGE IS SEXIST” The event highlighted the devastating impact the climate crisis has on women and their rights, but also how important it is for women to be involved at all levels of action and decision-making in the fight against ecological crises The event concluded with a screening of the film Amazonia: The Heart of Mother Earth, which I co-directed and co-produced with Gert-Peter Bruch

While climate change affects all regions of the world, it is the most vulnerable populations, particularly women, who do not have the resources to protect themselves on a daily basis, who suffer the most For example, they are forced to walk long hours to collect water, which prevents young girls from going to school But women are not only victims; they are the first to protect natural resources, by sharing and passing on their knowledge within their families and communities CARE Belgium is an organisation that fights for gender equality, tolerance and social justice I'm very proud to be its honorary president
EMERGENCY IN LEBANON
The collapse of the economic system has led to record inflation: one of the most serious global crises since the middle of the 19th century (according to the World Bank) The population is running out of everything: money, food, electricity and medicines Thousands of people continue to flee their homes and hundreds have lost their lives CARE is stepping up its humanitarian response by providing vital support to the displaced population, in particular by distributing food, water, essential products and hygiene kits.
2024

SUPPORTED PROJECTS 2024-2025
CARE Belgium is currently active in 7 countries through 10 projects whose main objectives are the promotion of gender equality, the respect of women's rights and their economic empowerment, health, food security, climate resilience, as well as humanitarian action in emergency situations, whether of natural or human origin
All CARE projects are built on a holistic approach, intervening in complementary areas in order to effectively combat the interdependence of the causes of poverty. We place women at the heart of all our actions.
Enabel has been one of our privileged partners since 2021 This institutional development player has placed its trust in us and has made a commitment alongside CARE Belgium to support one of our projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and one in Palestine.

Benin/Togo Socio-economic empowerment

We support young people and women vulnerable to radicalisation and violent extremism by strengthening their economic and professional capacities We support local organisations in setting up training programmes to reduce poverty, strengthen social cohesion and prevent the risks of radicalisation, especially in the context of growing security threats in northern Benin
Beneficiaries: 600 young people and 1,200 vulnerable women

Palestine Mental health
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is exacerbating tensions, violence and displacement, leaving young people particularly vulnerable to trauma and social exclusion We help young people in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, providing them with access to mental health and psychosocial support services, while strengthening their inclusion and engagement within their communities
Beneficiaries: 2,000 young people

Lebanon Humanitarian emergency
The collapse of the economic system has led to record inflation: one of the world's worst crises The population is running out of everything: money, food, electricity and medicine Thousands of people are still fleeing their homes, and hundreds have lost their lives. We are providing vital support to the displaced population, notably by distributing food, water, essential products and hygiene kits.
Beneficiaries: 22,000 people

DRC
Food security
Conflict and institutional abandonment have left thousands of farming households vulnerable to food and nutritional insecurity We are improving the resilience and autonomy of households in the province of Kasaï Oriental through innovative and sustainable agricultural practices, and facilitating the role of women in decisionmaking and their economic empowerment
Beneficiaries: 1000 households
Beneficiaries: 700,000 people DRC Health
North Kivu faces recurring humanitarian and health crises, aggravated by epidemics and persistent instability We are strengthening the healthcare system in the Butembo and Beni areas by improving access to care through the supply of essential medicines, the training of healthcare staff and the rehabilitation of infrastructure

Romania Family planning
Despite reforms to the child protection system since 1989, many women in Romania continue to abandon unwanted children. In response, we have been developing an itinerant family planning programme for over 20 years to provide information and promote access to social and medical monitoring and contraception for parents, particularly vulnerable and isolated women
Beneficiaries: 100,000 beneficiaries
ADVOCACY INITIATIVES
1 advocacy event (conference-debate) as part of the global « CLIMATE CHANGE IS SEXIST » campaign, highlighting the impact of climate change on gender inequalities
