A HIP ESCAPE H+H stands at the forefront of the Historically Informed Performance (HIP) movement, treating audiences to a timeless, one-of-a-kind listening experience. The orchestra plays on period instruments – the very kind that the great Baroque and Classical composers once wrote for. Woodwinds are made of wood, not metal or plastic. Brass instruments don’t have valves. Strings are crafted of gut, rather than steel. As you’d imagine, this gives the music a wholly different sound. But there’s more to the story. Our orchestra is smaller – with 25 to 50 musicians as opposed to the 100 found in contemporary orchestras. These musicians share a stage with a chorus of just 25 to 30 members. There’s an intimacy to each H+H performance that’s a throwback to the great performances of the past. And how sweet, how unexpected, the sound! Beloved masterpieces take on a whole new life. THE GLORIES OF BACH
THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO
Our season opener captures the sizzle that listeners first experienced in Leipzig’s famous Zimmermann’s Coffee House, where Bach himself led these marvelous suites, which H+H will perform on the period instruments Bach wrote for. No. 3 includes the sublime Air on the G String, and both suites feature dances that are, by turn, ebullient, elegant, and festive. The celebration also includes one of Bach’s most jubilant motets and radiant masses.
H+H presents its first-ever complete performances of Mozart’s comic masterpiece, infused with H+H’s trademark authenticity and vitality. You’ll love the “upstairs, downstairs” intrigue, disguises, crazy plot lines, and, most of all, Mozart’s seductive music, starring Ying Fang, fresh from her triumphs in the role at the Paris Opera and the Met.
It’s often said that H+H’s way with music wipes the dust off the masterpieces, restoring their original vibrancy and virtuosity. Nowhere is that more evident than in Handel’s Messiah. It doesn’t matter that we gave the U.S. premiere or that this will be our 169th consecutive year performing it. Our musical gift for the holidays is sure to brighten your spirits with the joy of the season: Bach’s exhilarating cantata—a partnership of soprano and solo trumpet in friendly “rivalry,” enlivened by H+H’s period instruments—ends in a spectacular fugue on the word “Alleluia”; tours-de-force for Robin Johannsen: Silete Venti, in which her opening words quite literally silence turbulent instrumental forces; and a heavenly Gloria. Plus Handel’s Concerto grosso and the H+H premiere of the lively Simphonie by much-admired Bach contemporary Jan Zelenka.
Our brilliant concertmaster solos in H+H’s premiere of Mozart’s youthful violin concerto, full of engaging melodies and grace. The bold tempos and dynamics of Beethoven’s First Symphony caused a stir in Vienna, and you’ll hear it as those surprised audiences did, sounding as vibrant and lively as on the day of its premiere. Opening the concert: H+H’s first ever performance of the spirited music of Marianna Martines, highly regarded in her times as a composer, keyboardist, and singer who was Haydn’s downstairs neighbor and part of Mozart’s musical circle.
Feel the power of Beethoven’s “heroic” symphony, celebrating “the memory of a great man”—from its two bolts-out-of-the-blue opening chords to the brilliant finale—as H+H, led by Václav Luks, breathes exhilarating life into this majestic masterpiece. We begin with power of another kind: a storm at sea, as the symphony’s nickname promises. The composer (a friend of Mozart) raises thunderous effects of all kinds, reserving the mightiest for the last movement, with the bass drum front and center.

BACH EASTER ORATORIO
The gaiety, humor, and sparkle of Mozart’s concerto comes to life via the magical sound of the fortepiano, the instrument for which he composed this work. You’ll especially relish the last movement, which incorporates the song of Mozart’s pet starling! It has been 155 years since H+H performed the glorious “Reformation” symphony, with its stirring “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” finale. Rising to a lofty crescendo, the chaconne by the 18th-century French composer, conductor, and opera director Pierre Berton makes for an especially regal concert opening.
You’re invited to Bach’s Easter Oratorio. The awe-inspiring music evokes a powerful gamut of universal emotions—from laments and astonishment, to jubilation and victory, underscored by bright trumpets and drums—even dance rhythms. Opening the concert is Bononcini’s affecting Stabat Mater.
