Hancock Health Foundation 2025 Annual Report

Page 1

We’re here for the health of our community.

ABOUT THE HANCOCK HEALTH FOUNDATION

For more than 40 years, the Hancock Health Foundation has supported the advancement of healthcare and wellness in and around Hancock County.

Hancock Health does not receive tax dollars and writes off approximately $2.4 million each month in uncompensated services and to provide care for patients who do not have financial means to pay. We believe everyone deserves access to high quality care, with or without insurance. The Foundation’s work is crucial in supporting underfunded services, covering care for those with limited resources and providing educational programs focused on health and wellness.

Our Annual Report outlines the support Hancock Health Foundation provides to the hospital and our community in further detail.

LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

TONYA GALBRAITH

As I end my nine-year term as a member of the Hancock Health Foundation, it really does seem that it has gone by in a blink of the eye. In the past nine years I have made many friends and learned so much about the good work of the Foundation and services of the hospital. I am truly grateful for those experiences and friendships made. As chair of the board for the past two years, I would like to reflect on the impact the Foundation continues to have. In early 2025 the Foundation Board held a day-long retreat to consider projects for the next three-year capital campaign. The Future in Focus Campaign was born from this effort as the Board voted to support the purchase of a PET/CT scanner, thereby enhancing patient access, diagnosis and treatment. The campaign officially kicked off in May and fundraising efforts since have been at full throttle.

We also held two very successful events in 2025 – the ever-popular golf outing, which continues to grow and is now held over two days and the Women Helping Women event. Women Helping Women featured a fun ‘50s “Grease” theme and saw a record setting year for the event. A big thank you to all who participated or donated to these events. Having fun while raising money is the way to go! And if that’s not enough, the Foundation provided financial support for Hancock Health Associates, scholarships to local students, and organized an update by Steve Long where more than 100 attendees were given the opportunity to hear news about Hancock Health.

It is so important to note that none of this could be done with the support of donors, the work of our volunteers and the hard work and commitment of the Hancock Health Foundation Staff. I have been honored to serve on the board of the Foundation and look forward to continuing my involvement in any way I can.

WOMEN HELPING WOMEN CELEBRATION

The 27th Annual Women Helping Women Celebration was held on October 24th at Embassy Suites in Noblesville. This year’s theme was Hopelessly Devoted to Women’s Health, and attendees went all out with the ‘50s theme! The event hosted 350 community members and raised a record setting $165,000 for the Women’s Clinic at Hancock Health.

Through the generosity of donors to the Women Helping Women program, Hancock Health provides life-saving healthcare services for women in our community who are uninsured or low-income. The Women’s Clinic is located within the James T. Anderson, M.D. Center for Women’s Health at Hancock Regional Hospital. The annual Women Helping Women Celebration raises critical funding to ensure that mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, and other vital services, like gynecological exams, bone density screenings, MRIs, and more, remain accessible.

New this year, the event featured a VIP cocktail hour and classic car show to go along with the 1950s theme. Hancock Health CEO and car enthusiast, Steve Long, hosted the car show and mingled with VIP guests as they enjoyed an open bar, premium appetizers, and checked out 25 cool cars from past decades.

The Women Helping Women program featured a panel of staff members from the women’s clinic and was facilitated by our evening’s MC, Emmywinning journalist and owner of Pence Media Group, Nicole Pence Becker. The panel featured Ashleigh Guenin, Nurse Practitioner at the Women’s Clinic; Bev

Shortridge-Khajenouri, Mammogram Technologist at Hancock Health; Jessica Harter, Breast Nurse Navigator; and Becky Pohland, the Women’s Clinic Coordinator. Panelists shared their backgrounds, why they are passionate about their work and advice for women in the audience related to their health. These testimonies illustrate the caring, compassionate environment at Hancock Health’s women’s clinic and all the little touches that make it truly special.

This year’s Live Auction and Fund-a-Need were facilitated by long-time supporter of Women Helping Women and auctioneer extraordinaire, Wayne Addison. The live auction included vacations, handmade furniture and rare artwork. The Fund A Need, which raised more than $25,000 in just a few minutes, supported the Foundation’s Future in Focus Campaign. These funds will help to purchase a PET/ CT scanner for Hancock Health, which will improve access and treatment for Hancock Health patients, including those served through Women Helping Women.

This event is made possible by our Women Helping Women Committee members who work for months to gather auction items, plan food and décor, request sponsorships and organize entertainment to create a fun evening for all.

Since the program began in 1998, Women Helping Women has raised more than $1.5 million to support the Women’s Clinic, and during this time, 3,790 women have had healthcare services covered by the program. While the clinic receives funding from the Breast Cancer Awareness Trust and a few additional sources, the primary funding source for the Women’s Clinic is the Women Helping Women program, which would not be possible without our generous donors and volunteers.

I have been a Family Practice Nurse Practitioner for 16 years. I have worked for Hancock almost 7 years in immediate care, occupational health, covid clinic, Employer Based Clinics, Family Practice, and now the Women’s clinic. Throughout the years I have always felt a great connection with my female patients. I became very interested in learning more about gynecological issues and menopause treatments. I have continued education specifically in this area over the last two years. The clinic’s previous Nurse Practitioner, Beth Turpin, reached out to me to see if I was interested in the women’s health Nurse Practitioner position and I felt it was a great fit! This has been a great transition for me.

What do you think makes our Women’s Clinic so special?

The Clinic is so personable. The patients are treated with respect, and we truly listen to their concerns. I personally provide patient results in a timely manner. We take the time to make sure the patients understand their treatment plan. The staff is amazing and understands the importance of helping women receive care.

What do you wish more women knew about their health?

I wish women knew preventive care is powerful. Screenings, bone health, heart health, and metabolic health matter at every stage, especially as hormones shift. Women deserve shared decision-making. You should be heard and respected in the plan. In my opinion, we offer that here at the Women’s Clinic.

Tell us a little about you personally!

I live in Greenfield and I have been married for 12 years. I have two black labradors and two stepsons. I love to spend time with family and friends. I love to read, travel, and play board games.

47 TH ANNUAL

GOLF BENEFIT

The 47th Annual Golf Benefit was held on June 12 and 13 at Royal Hylands in Knightstown, and hosted more than 250 players over three rounds of golf. The event raised $57,000 to support local scholarships and our Future in Focus Campaign. We are fortunate to have more than 40 volunteers, dozens of sponsors and donors who support our golf outing every year and help to make it a success. The outing included a putting contest, skins game, closest to the pin and hole-in-one competitions, as well as cash prizes for each flight’s first and second place teams.

Hancock County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state, which puts Hancock Health in a unique, but challenging, position. We face significant financial challenges brought on by postpandemic cost inflation, legislative activism, and rampant insurance company denials. Fortunately, we also face unprecedented opportunities for growth, and Hancock Health’s leadership has made it a priority to increase access and expand our services to better meet the needs of our growing population, while also positioning our organization to be financially secure for the future. With long-term growth as a current priority and focus, sometimes short-term needs like capital equipment must go on the back burner.

That is why the Hancock Health Foundation has created the Future in Focus campaign to help purchase an in-house PET/CT scanner for the hospital.

Currently, we have a mobile PET/CT scanner that comes to Hancock Regional Hospital one day per week. A PET scan helps detect cancer, heart disease and neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s. A combined PET/CT scan offers two advanced imaging procedures in one scan. Having an on-site PET/CT scanner will significantly improve patient access, enhance diagnosis efficiency and streamline treatment.

In 2025, Hancock Health began offering a new Alzheimer’s treatment that has given hope to both doctors and patients . The drug, Lecanemab — sold under the brand name Leqembi — is now available for qualifying patients in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. While this is not a cure, the treatment works to slow the progression of dementia. Having an infusion center, two dedicated neurologists and access to a PET/CT scanner, made Hancock uniquely positioned to begin offering this new treatment, while many other hospitals around Indiana cannot.

According to Hancock Health’s president and CEO, Steve Long, the drug binds to amyloid plaques in the brain, which are known to cause cognitive decline. “It’s amazing. It works by allowing the immune system to essentially wash that plaque away.” Long said. “We’re thrilled to be able to offer this treatment to patients at Hancock Health.”

The treatment is relatively new, having been approved by the FDA in 2023. Dr. Joshua East, Neurologist at Hancock Health is cautiously optimistic and says that they are seeing a positive impact on patients who are receiving the drug.

As more and more patients become involved in this treatment, there continues to be an increased need for PET/CT scans for Alzheimer’s diagnosis and monitoring treatment progress. This, combined an increase in oncology patients, have contributed to the significant increase in referrals for PET/CT scans. The result is that more and more patients are having to wait for their scans or travel to another hospital, if they cannot get an appointment on the one day it is at Hancock.

Though it has been less than 10 years since opening the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center, it became clear that more space was essential to continue serving our growing community. To address this need, the hospital began renovations in 2025 to add a second infusion area at the Cancer Center, providing more space for individuals receiving chemotherapy, Leqembi for Alzheimer’s, and other infusion treatments.

I have had one PET scan so far. I think it would be convenient to have this at the hospital here in Greenfield all the time vs traveling to Indianapolis. I have my second PET scan scheduled soon. Getting this one scheduled was a little more difficult, as the machine is heavily scheduled. Due to the scheduling of the equipment, I almost missed the allotted time frame to get the scan done before my fifth infusion.

JODY SCOTT RENICK ONSET
ALZHEIMER’S

GIFT OF A LIFETIME

“After having loved living in Greenfield for sixty years, early in January of 2023, we found Tom in need of 24-hour health care. We had previously visited Four Seasons Retirement Home in Columbus, Indiana to be near family and felt that was the place we needed to be. Six weeks later, Tom passed away, and I had become settled into my new apartment in the residential center.

As time went by, I began thinking that I wanted to do something for the Greenfield community in memory of Tom. When I learned of the hospital’s need for a PET/CT scanner, I knew that was just the perfect way to memorialize him. He was always an active volunteer for local projects, and we had often said how much we appreciated living within a few miles of a quality hospital.

Tom used the mobile scanner several times. Sometimes it was difficult to get an appointment, and if the weather was bad on the day of his appointment, it was a real challenge. I also like that the scanner can be used to detect cancer and diagnose heart issues (both of which Tom doctored for) as well as diagnose Alzheimer’s.

I am so pleased to be able to be a part of bringing the new PET/CT scanner to the hospital, and I am happy that many, many patients will benefit from it in years to come. I know that would make Tom smile too.”

CAROLE BLOODGOOD

The goal of the Future in Focus Campaign is to raise $3 million to purchase a dedicated PET/CT scanner that will be available to all of the patients who walk through our doors of Hancock Health.

In May, the Foundation kicked off the campaign with an event where donors and volunteers could hear about the need from Hancock Health leaders and physicians, and learn about the Foundation’s efforts to address this need for our community.

By the end of 2025, the Foundation had received over $2.2 million in donation commitments to the campaign, including a transformational gift from Mrs. Carole Bloodgood. The overwhelming community support has allowed the Foundation to fast forward its planning and begin working with the hospital on plans to purchase equipment and build out the new space.

“We’re honored to receive this incredibly generous gift from the Bloodgood family and are excited about what this means for our hospital and our community,” said Nancy Davis, Foundation Executive Director. “Their investment in local healthcare will inspire others to give and will allow us to make this equipment available for our patients much sooner than expected!”

Your gift matters to our patients who are facing potentially life-changing diagnoses. With a more accessible PET/ CT scanner, we can provide peace of mind with reliable disease diagnosis and early detection alongside more effective treatments.

Contributions are tax deductible and can be made as a one-time gift or pledged over the course of three years.

MAKING AN IMPACT

MAKING AN IMPACT:

HOSPICE CARE

In 2025, hospice services offered through Hancock Health continued to grow and evolve. Suburban Hospice, now a part of Suburban Health at Home, supports patients and families with compassionate end-of-life-care in the comfort of their own home. While some patients require inpatient hospice care, most prefer to remain home as long as possible, and the team at Suburban Hospice offers personalized in-home care that focuses on the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of patients and families.

The total number of patients receiving hospice care in 2025 was 380, up 10% from the previous year, and 90 of those patients received inpatient care in the Transitions Unit. As the daily census jumped to 75 daily patients, up from 68 the previous year, the Suburban Hospice team expanded to accommodate this growth and now have over 40 associates on staff.

In early 2026, Tammy Strunk took the reigns as new administrator of Suburban Hospice. Tammy retired from Hancock Health in 2025, where she served in various clinical and leadership roles, including Chief Nursing Officer, for 30 years.

“I chose hospice administration because it is where care aligns with purpose: honoring patient goals, centering the patient and family, and ensuring they are educated, supported, and empowered at the end of life.”
TAMMY STRUNK

Donations to the Rex A. Pasko Hospice Endowment support the operations of the Transitions Unit, a beautiful, quiet space that feels more like a home than a hospital. In this special unit, hospice patients and their families receive end-of-life care and support when pain and symptoms are too much to manage at home, or when a caregiver needs respite. Because reimbursement for inpatient hospice is so low, Hancock Health relies on these donations to ensure that this space and this care is available for hospice patients long-term. Those who have experienced hospice care personally know the tremendous value of it, and we’re so grateful to the families who choose to designate memorial donations to support hospice care, as well as those who give in memory of friends and loved ones.

LEAVING A LEGACY FOR HOSPICE CARE — LON E. & RUTH D. WALKER

Lon and Ruth Walker were both longtime volunteers at Hancock Regional Hospital, so when Lon passed in 2001, Ruth knew she wanted to honor his memory with a gift to the hospital. Having received care and support through our hospice program, Ruth created the Lon Walker Hospice Endowment Fund to provide ongoing support for hospice services. Ruth continued to volunteer at the hospital and was a generous supporter of hospice and other healthcare programs for many years. When she passed this year, we were honored to receive a gift from her estate to the Lon Walker Hospice Endowment.

“Our parents loved the hospital and devoted thousands of hours volunteering there for many years. Mother established the Lon E. Walker Hospice Endowment with the Hancock Health Foundation to honor his memory, and the excellent hospice care he received. She went on to receive hospice care herself and left a planned gift in her estate to the Lon E. Walker Endowment. Through this endowment, we hope to ensure that hospice care continues to be available for people in our community.”

MAKING AN IMPACT:

CANCER CARE

The Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center continues to provide world-class cancer care delivered with expertise and compassion, close to home. Equipped with an expert team of oncologists and nurse navigators, the knowledge of Mayo Clinic specialists, and some of Indiana’s best technology and medicine, our care teams are experienced in treating a wide range of cancers. Hancock Health regularly participates in innovative clinical trials that can provide access to breakthrough cancer-fighting practices. Some of the commonly occurring diagnoses our physicians treat include Breast, Cervical, Prostate, Lung, Colon and Bladder Cancers.

New this year, the Cancer Center began offering a low-dose radiation treatment for osteoarthritis. The treatment uses low-energy doses to target inflammation in joints, reducing pain and improving function for many patients, especially for mild-to-moderate cases, and offers a potential alternative to surgery, working by calming inflamed cells rather than regenerating tissue. Patients typically receive several short, painless sessions over a few weeks, with relief often seen within weeks and lasting months to years, with minor side effects, making it a promising option for those not ready for joint replacement. This procedure is also being done for earlystage Dupuytren’s contracture.

The Foundation holds several funds that support Hancock Health’s cancer care program and patients in a variety of ways. The Cancer Care Endowment provides annual operational support for the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center, helping to maintain the physical space, hire top experts in the field and purchase the latest in technology and equipment.

“I’ve experienced healthcare many different places, as both a patient and a social worker, so I can say confidently that the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center is special. The cancer care team goes to great lengths to make everyone feel comfortable. It’s hard to put into words unless you’ve experienced it. They’ve taken the best care of me and made me feel like family. We’re so fortunate to have this cancer center, and this hospital, right here in our community.”

OUR NEW OUTPATIENT INFUSION SPACE

In 2025, over 3,000 patients were treated in our Cancer Center, with a 7% increase in new cancer patients compared to 2024. We also saw a 17% increase in infusions, demonstrating the significant need for additional infusion space. The new outpatient infusion space will open in early 2026 and will include 12 additional infusion chairs in a beautiful, new space across the hall from the medical oncology clinic.

This area will allow us to create a separate space for outpatient infusions and dedicate our cancer center infusion area to cancer patients. Infusions/ injections will be administered to support orders from specialists, and primary care providers to address clinical needs, including:

• Rheumatology

• Gastrointestinal

• Neurology

• Iron Deficiency

• Osteoporosis

• Endocrinology

• Blood Transfusions

• IV Antibiotics

• Fluids

MAKING

2025 was a year of continued growth as the Hancock Health Connection Center (HHCC) expands its services to reach even more people in need in our community.

Since opening in 2020, the HHCC has been providing essential behavioral health services including mental health and substance use treatment programs, justice navigation, support groups, educational programming and more.

In December, the team moved into their new location in the Green Family Foundation Behavioral Health Center, which houses the Hancock Health Connection Center, Hancock Counseling and Psychiatric Services, and the Mobile Response Team. Having all of these services in a centralized location provides easier access, coordinated care, and a comprehensive approach to supporting mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

“For the first time, our teams are able to collaborate in a shared space designed entirely around the needs of the people we serve,” said Amanda Everidge, MSW, LSW, Executive Director of Hancock Behavioral Health Services. “This center removes barriers to care, strengthens partnerships, and allows us to provide seamless, compassionate support for individuals and families across our community.”

The project was made possible through the Hancock Health Foundation’s $3.5 million Mental Health Campaign, plus an additional $1 million from the Green Family Foundation, which was honored with naming rights for the center. A new donor wall within the facility recognizes the individuals, families, and organizations whose generosity helped make the project a reality. Donations to the Foundation’s Mental Health & Substance Use Treatment Endowment provide ongoing support for the Hancock Health Connection Center and help to ensure that the crucial services they offer will be sustained for the future.

The second Mental Health Conversation event was held at Greenfield Central High School for youth workers, mental health professionals, first responders, school staff, health care professionals and other community stakeholders. More than 100 attendees were able to hear from and ask questions about their experience and perspectives around mental health. The keynote speaker Amy Abell from Hopelight LLC, a youth panel included teens from Hancock County schools, and the adult panel featured experts from Wellspring, Recovery Café and the Hancock Health Connection Center.

2025 SNAPSHOT:

• The Hancock Health Connection Center assisted a total of 1,506 individuals in 2025.

• The Justice Team supported 285 individuals who are either incarcerated, post-incarceration, probation or community corrections.

• General support navigators provided services to 1,046 individuals with any identified social determinants of health needs which can include mental health or substance misuse, as well as housing, food, transportation, insurance, and more.

• The Mobile Response Team supported 175 individuals who were in mental health or substance use distress. The team responds to patients wherever they may be within Hancock County and can provide services in real time including transportation to an acute stabilization unit, detox, sober living or treatment facility.

• QPR Suicide Prevention Trainings were provided to 384 individuals in 2025.

• Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Training was provided to 51 individuals. ACE training educates professionalsparticularly in healthcare, education and social services- on the long-term impact of childhood trauma on physical and mental health, brain development and behavior.

• The HHCC also hosted its first ever Suicide Vigil and facilitated Hancock County’s first “988 Day”, to raise positive awareness about the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

• The Connection Center launched a new series of therapeutic workshops, with its first one focused on grief over the holidays, which helped 9 individuals deal with their grief during a difficult time of year.

Hancock Health Foundation offers complimentary estate planning services to our community through a partnership with Thompson & Associates, a national leader in values-based estate planning.

A few things to know about this program:

• This service is provided to you free of charge.

• You will not be asked for a gift of any kind.

• There are absolutely no products to sell and no money management.

• The planning process is completely confidential. No one at Hancock Health will know what you have done unless you tell us.

• Your attorney, financial advisors and/or family are all welcome to attend these sessions.

Many people find that they can provide more for their families, as well as charities that are important to them, with just a few smart choices. They feel empowered to direct their assets in the ways they decide, not the government. Thompson & Associates can also offer a second opinion or make updates to your current estate plan — all at no cost to you!

Our Thompson & Associates representative, Brian Cohoon, comes to Hancock Regional Hospital once a month to meet with people in our community. To schedule an introductory meeting with Brian, contact Allyson Smith in the Foundation office at asmith@hancockhealth.org or call (317) 468-4106.

“We are remembering Hancock Health in our estate plan because Hancock Health serves families right here in Greenfield, benefiting neighbors, friends, and future generations, thus ensuring high-quality care remains available to everyone close to home. We have experienced the kindness and professionalism of the staff. Our giving back is also a way of expressing gratitude for that care. Supporting Hancock Health is about leaving a legacy—helping to ensure that excellent healthcare close to home will be available for future generations.”

BOB & SUE TRUE

STRENGTHENING LOCAL HEALTHCARE FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

The Hancock Health Foundation Visionary Circle is made up of individuals who are dedicated to supporting local healthcare through a gift in their estate. These gifts help to ensure the longterm sustainability of Hancock Health as a local, independent community hospital.

Donations from the Visionary Circle members support any area of care that is important to them: hospice, cancer care, mental health services, and Women Helping Women, among others. Through a planned gift, you can provide for your loved ones, receive tax benefits and create a lasting legacy with Hancock Health. Your membership will also encourage others to consider Hancock Health in their planning.

Visionary Circle members are recognized for their generosity on program materials, our website, annual report, and a donor wall in the hospital lobby. Perks of membership also include regular updates from Hancock Health and the Foundation, invitations to special events and members only activities.

If you already have a planned gift benefiting Hancock Health, please let us know! This will allow us to recognize you as a Visionary Circle member and share the impact of your support during your lifetime.

SCHOLARSHIPS

Hancock Health Foundation offers annual scholarships for local students to encourage entry into healthcare professions and to help keep students working and living here in Hancock County once they graduate. In 2025, the Foundation awarded scholarships to 19 local students, totaling $45,000 to support their education in nursing, radiologic technology and a variety of other healthcare fields.

The 2025 Edith Zike Nursing Scholarship recipients include Rachel Hamilton, Christina Brunson, Alyssa Deckard, Kayla Whitesell, Savanah Hardin and Kaitlyn Laffey. These students each received $2,000 toward their tuition.

The 2025 John F. Stickford Nursing Scholarship was awarded to Taylor Titus. Taylor is attending Ball State and participating in the Family Nurse Practitioner program to obtain her Master of Science in Nursing. This scholarship will cover her full tuition for the 2025-2026 school year. The John F. Stickford Nursing Scholarships are made possible through the generous gift from the estate of Mr. John F. Stickford. Recipients of this scholarship commit to working as a nurse in Hancock or Shelby County for each year that they receive this scholarship.

The Foundation’s School of Radiologic Technology Scholarship is awarded to individuals currently enrolled in the hospital’s School of Radiologic Technology. This year’s recipients include Kendra Buckley, Bethany Christy and Sarah Essex. They each received $1,000 toward their tuition.

The Bryan and Virginia Burney School of Radiologic Technology Scholarship, which supports graduates from Mt. Vernon High School, was awarded to Reece Powell and will cover his full tuition for both years of the program.

Mackenzie White received the $500 Richard A. Silver, MD Clinical Excellence Award for being top of the class.

The Foundation also awarded its Healthcare and Wellness Scholarship to five deserving students. This scholarship was created to support local students and encourage entry into healthcare and wellness professions. Each student received $2,000 toward their tuition. The 2025 recipients are Mia Griesmeyer, Grace Charpentier, Jason Bundy, Chelsea Hancock and Liliann Hunt. The 2025 Jill Carr Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 was also awarded to Mia Griesmeyer.

This year, the Foundation established a new scholarship. The CL Morris Healthcare Management and Administration scholarship was created by Sharon Morris Makely in honor of her father, former Hancock Regional Hospital administrator, CL “Corky” Morris. The first recipient of this scholarship, which is $3,000 annually, is Kayla Whitesell.

The Hancock Health Foundation’s Scholarship programs are made possible by generous contributions from the community.

“I received the John Stickford Scholarship while I was still in nursing school, but in 2018 it affirmed my passion for healthcare and motivated me to continue pursuing excellence in my career. That support continued through the CL Morris Healthcare Management and Administration Scholarship and the Edith Zike Nursing Scholarship as I pursue my master’s degree in nursing administration and my Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) at Ball State Univerity. Hancock Health’s scholarships eased the financial burden of advanced education and allowed me to focus fully on my studies and professional growth. I am deeply grateful for this investment in my education, which has shaped my journey as a nurse leader and advanced practice provider and strengthened my commitment to serving my community.”

HEALTHY COMMUNITY AWARDS

Howard Green and Hancock Health Connection Center have been named recipients of the Hancock Health Foundation’s 2025 Healthy Community Awards.

THE BERT CURRY HEALTHY COMMUNITY AWARD

Named in honor of the Foundation’s first Executive Director, the Bert Curry Healthy Community Award is given each year to an individual for exemplary and innovative efforts to create positive change in the health of our community. This year’s recipient, Howard Green, has lived with his wife and family in Hancock County for decades. He has long served the Community Foundation of Hancock County, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Brandywine Park soccer and a variety of other non-profits. Howard’s most recent work is primarily with the Hancock County Food Pantry where, amid drastic cuts in government funding, Howard has worked to address increased pantry needs and help prevent food insecurity in our community.

Howard’s nominators describe him as a strong leader, compassionate, a great listener and role model. As chairman of the Board of the Hancock County Food Pantry, Howard has overseen the tremendous growth of the pantry over its 35 year history, the move to a new facility in 2023, and the everyday oversight of the pantry, its providers, its volunteers, and its patrons. According to the nomination, client counts at the Hancock County Food Pantry have increased by as much as 50 percent in recent months. The pantry distributes between 50,000 and 60,000 pounds of food each week.

Nominators shared that Howard is not just an overseer, but also takes on daily tasks from cleaning and taking phone calls to volunteer coordination and food delivery. They state that Howard is “one of the kindest, most generous persons in Hancock County.” With this award, Howard received a $1,000 donation to the charity of his choice, which was given to the Hancock County Food Pantry.

THE BOBBY KEEN HEALTHY COMMUNITY AWARD

In 2014, the Foundation established the Bobby Keen Healthy Community Award, named in honor of the former President & CEO of Hancock Regional Hospital. Through this award, the Hancock Health Foundation recognizes a hospital program or local organization whose efforts are creating positive change in the health of our local communities. The 2025 recipient of the Bobby Keen Healthy Community Award is the Hancock Health Connection Center.

The Hancock Health Connection Center (HHCC) opened in 2020 with a single navigator offering basic resource information. Over the past 5 years, HHCC has grown into a multidisciplinary team dedicated to improving the health and well-being of Hancock County residents. Their mission is to connect individuals with the resources, support, and care they need to build stronger, healthier lives.

The HHCC has demonstrated significant growth and impact each year. Starting with 428 clients in 2020, the center served over 1500 clients in 2025. This upward trend speaks not only to the increasing need within the community, but also to their reputation for effective, compassionate, and accessible support.

The Connection Center provides general navigation referrals, mental health and addiction support, justicesystem coordination and vital community outreach and education. Their services include:

• Integrated multidisciplinary services that reduce barriers and streamline support.

• Immediate mobile response for mental health and substance use crises, offering immediate, on-site mental health and substance use crisis support anywhere in the community.

• In-jail support and re-entry assistance, bridging the gap between incarceration and community reintegration, and

• Proactive community engagement and education, equipping residents, organizations, and systems with the knowledge to recognize and respond to trauma, addiction, and mental health needs.

Because programs like these are traditionally underfunded, the Hancock Health Connection Center is supported, in part, through charitable donations to the Hancock Health Foundation’s Mental Health & Substance Use Treatment Fund. The nomination states that “their holistic, collaborative model has created a more connected and resilient community, setting a new standard for what community health support can look like. Its staff and partners embody the belief that every person deserves support, dignity, and connection. Together, they continue to build a stronger, healthier community—one connection at a time.”

The Hancock Health Connection Center received a $1,000 donation with this award.

Other nominees for the Bert Curry Healthy Community Award include Denise Short, Jack Williams, Kylie Lynette, Maddie Clock and Robyn Jarrell. Nominees for the Bobby Keen Healthy Community Award include Ausome Indy, the Greenfield Veterans Honor Guard and the Hancock Health Wellness Centers. All of this year’s nominees are wonderful examples of people working together to make a positive change in the health of our community.

LET’S INVEST FOR TOMORROW LIFT

In 2025, the Associate Crisis Fund provided assistance to 42 Hancock Health associates who were experiencing a financial crisis. This fund, which is made possible through LIFT donations from Hancock Health associates, provides crucial help for things like medical bills, car repair, rent, utilities and more. In 2025, alone, more than $25,000 was given to associates who were struggling.

Let’s Invest for Tomorrow (LIFT) is Hancock Health’s employee giving program. Associates become LIFT members by giving at least $1 per pay from their paycheck, and in 2025, we had 837 LIFT members, which is more than half of all Hancock Health associates. These donations are not only the sole funding source for the Associate Crisis Fund, but they also support a variety of Foundation projects. Over the past 10 years, LIFT members have supported hospice care, the Sue Ann Wortman Cancer Center, the renovation of the Andis Women & Children’s Unit, mental health and substance use treatment programs, and now the Future in Focus Campaign.

The LIFT Giving Tree offered additional assistance during the holidays for Hancock Health Associates who were struggling financially. Associates submitted gift ideas for their families, which were put anonymously on the Giving Tree. Hancock Health associates, volunteers and visitors to the hospital took those tags, shopped for the gifts, and returned them wrapped to the Foundation. Foundation staff then distributed the gifts to 18 families before Christmas.

“I can’t tell you how much this means to me and my family. Money is so tight right now; I did not know how I would be able to afford gifts for my children. Thanks to the Giving Tree, they will have gifts under the tree this Christmas.”
