This project involves designing a dedicated museum to house the extensive collection of Hassan Sharif, a seminal figure in contemporary and conceptual art in the Gulf region. Sharif, often hailed as the father of conceptual art in the Gulf, was an Emirati artist and writer whose work significantly influenced a new generation of artists in the United Arab Emirates. His creations, characterized by weavings, drawings, and innovative material experimentation, are represented in prestigious public collections, including the Guggenheim in New York and Abu Dhabi, the Centre Pompidou, Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, and the Sharjah Art Foundation.

Following his passing in 2016, Sharif’s body of work was bequeathed to a foundation bearing his name, with the UAE actively collecting his pieces. The proposed museum, to be located near Art Jameel, aims to create a space for archiving, permanent exhibitions, artwork preservation, and research into the arts and humanities of the UAE.

In developing this project, the focus was on creating a harmonious blend of functional exhibition spaces and contemplative environments. The design includes meticulous planning for natural light management to protect the artwork while enhancing its visual impact. This project underscores the ability to design culturally significant spaces that honor and elevate the legacy of prominent artists like Hassan Sharif.

The vision for the research retreat next to the Cibali Ayakapi Hamam in Istanbul, Turkey, is to seamlessly merge the rich cultural heritage of the past with the cutting-edge opportunities and possibilities of the future. This space aims to transcend time, becoming a harmonious intersection of tradition and innovation. The center will serve as a retreat for collaborative research and intellectual exchange, fostering a community of forward-thinking individuals dedicated to addressing the challenges and opportunities of the 2030 Forum.

Through the adaptive reuse of the hamam, the goal is to preserve and celebrate its historical significance, integrating its architectural beauty into a modern and sustainable environment. The retreat will be a hub for interdisciplinary exploration, where scholars and visionaries from diverse fields converge to shape a future marked by progress, inclusivity, and cultural reverence. This architectural endeavor is not merely a structure; it’s a testament to the relationship of heritage and advancement, embodying the spirit of the 2030 Forum’s commitment to a global vision for a better tomorrow.

Rethinking Sharjah’s Exburbs

Architectural Design Studio VII

Instructor: Prof. Jason Carlow

Collaboration With: Nour Eltabakh

American University of Sharjah 2024

Our project envisions a city where green spaces, agricultural zones, and parks are not afterthoughts but integral to the community’s daily life. The natural landscape is woven into the development, creating a balance between the built environment and surrounding ecology. Moving away from the conventional block typology allows for more flexible, open spaces that encourage social interaction, shared resources, and a deeper connection to nature. Our aim is to develop a more sensitive architecture with a porous edge that minimizes ecosystem fragmentation and habitat disruption. Taking into consideration Sharjah’s soil and wildlife, our design embraces the landscape’s unique qualities, using nature to inform the architecture and create a development deeply rooted in its context. This vision of urban living is sustainable, community focused, and in harmony with Sharjah’s agricultural and ecological heritage. The active facade strategy further enhances this integration by allowing for wind mitigation, reduced air pollution, and animal habitation. Unlike the typical rigid and isolated Sharjah block, our design creates fluid and interconnected spaces that foster community and integrate nature. Building vertically rather than sprawling horizontally preserves more land for green spaces and communal areas, reducing the environmental footprint while enhancing the quality of life. This approach also allows for multiple unit types such as duplexes on upper floors and studios or single bedroom apartments for individual users. Ultimately, our vision for Sharjah’s exurban development is to create high density cities that encourage communal living, stronger human nature connections, and pedestrian friendly environments that minimize land consumption.

The EtWE Legacy Lounge encompasses a design concept that seamlessly weaves together tradition and innovation that honors both cultural heritage and the elderly members of our community. At the heart of this concept is the incorporation of Mashrabiya, a traditional architectural element, which not only pays homage to the intricate lattice work found in traditional Emirati design but also serves as a symbolic veil, offering privacy and comfort to the elderly. The design emphasizes cultural authenticity by seamlessly integrating elements of traditional Emirati architecture, materials, and aesthetics into a modern setting.

The lounge spaces prioritize comfort and accessibility, featuring thoughtfully designed seating, shaded areas, and wheelchairfriendly pathways to ensure that elderly individuals feel at ease. The landscaping of the area showcases the beauty of traditional UAE plants, fostering a soothing and natural environment that enhances the overall well-being of its occupants. Beyond aesthetics, the design is deeply functional, adaptable, and replicable, offering a blueprint that can be implemented across varying sizes and shapes of spaces. We aim to create a welcoming space that not only provide relaxation for the elderly but also a space for them to socialize and interact with other members of the community.

Our concept is rooted in the palm tree—a symbol of heritage, sustainability, and life in the oasis. Inspired by oases, we studied the palm tree’s life cycle and explored how each part can be extracted and transformed into spatial experiences. Through three intimate pavilions, visitors journey from the fruit to the leaf to the trunk—each representing a stage of the tree, and a shift from light to solid, personal to shared.

The first pavilion, (Nawah), inspired by date seeds, utilizes date forms to create playful patterns of light, fostering interactive community experiences. Visitors can engage with installations that mimic the organic shapes and forms of date seeds, reflecting both heritage and renewal. The second pavilion, (Sa’afah), focuses on woven palm leaves and mats, offering an inviting, tactile experience. This pavilion celebrates traditional craftsmanship, encouraging visitors to connect through touch and intimate engagement with the material. The third pavilion, (Jidh’), embodies the strength and durability of palm wood and fibers, presented in a grounded, solid form. It emphasizes stability and permanence, providing a reflective space that evokes deeper connections with the heritage of regional oases in the UAE and KSA. Between these pavilions, sustainable furniture serves as social hubs, creating gathering points where visitors can rest, reflect, and engage with one another. These elements foster sensory relationships between the material and visitors, promoting dialogue about sustainable futures. This project honors the palm tree in every form—deeply rooted in tradition yet always forward-looking, intertwining heritage with innovative technological narratives.
