Hamilton College and Kirkland College

25th Reunion Yearbook

Dear Members of the Hamilton and Kirkland Classes of 1976:

In my years at Hamilton, beginning in 1980 as a faculty member and now as President, I have had the pleasure of meeting many of you both on the Hill and during my travels throughout the country. I am always moved by the commitment and enthusiastic support that Hamilton enjoys among alumni/ae from Hamilton and Kirkland. Your warmth and affection toward the College are evident in the biographical sketches contained within this reunion yearbook.

When Hamilton and Kirkland graduates gather on the Hill this year for Reunion Weekend, Beverly and I will have the pleasure of hosting the Kirkland and Hamilton _25th Reunion classes at our home on Friday evening. We look forward to seeing you then, and wish you a wonderful Reunion celebration.

Employment/Education

1977-79 Sibley, Lindsay, & Curr, Rochester, N.Y.

1979-81 University of Virginia, Colgate Darden School of Business Administration, M.B.A.

1981-85 Marine Midland Bank, N.Y., N.Y.

1985-89 Moody's Investor's Service, N.Y., N.Y.

1989-94 Wheat, First Securities, Richmond, VA

1994-Present T.Rowe Price Associates, Baltimore, MD

Following graduation from Hamilton, I went to work for a retailer in Rochester, N.Y.. It quickly became apparent that this was not my life's calling. I elected to move south to Virginia to obtain an MBA, which seemed like a good thing to do. UV A's business school was about as different from Hamilton as I could imagine, and though the weather was better, and the instruction was generally good, I don't look back on the experience with particular fondness. Let's just say that the school was proud to be known as "the boot camp of business schools" during my stay there.

>From Virginia, I returned to New York and the world of employment. I eventually got married and moved to the suburbs of Connecticut. Commuting into Manhattan from this leafy realm was fine until children came along. Deciding that I would like to see my family during the week and not only on weekends, we moved south and I took a job in Richmond, VA.

Richmond proved to be a generally pleasant place to live, if not completely welcoming to "Yankees." (I don't believe the Civil War will ever end in that city!). Thus, eventually we elected to move once again, this time a bit farther north, this time to Baltimore, MD. So here we are.

After receiving a Masters of Science in Geological Sciences at Brown University I spent several years as a productive member of society working as an exploration geologist in the Southwest. Then, tiring of participating in the misery of the human condition, I decided to profit from it. I went to law school, graduating from the University of Arizona School of Law in 1983. Since then, I have been employed by Pacific Legal Foundation working as an attorney, primarily in Alaska and California. I am scheduled to argue my first case before the United States Supreme Court in February, 2001.

Hamilton's Impact on Your Life and Values

While at Hamilton, I had the good fortune to both enjoy what campus life had to offer and to volunteer at Marcy State Hospital. The latter experience has given me an enduring appreciation of the former.

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years

Remember when we graduated from Hamilton there was an energy "crisis" ? My first job after Hamilton was loading trucks as a Teamster so I could live in India and learn more about methane production from animal wastes. Upon my return, I discovered a limited market for my knowledge and ended up as a foreman for an insulation crew in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1981 I went to Tuft University and got a Masters in Urban and Environmental Policy (whatever that is) specializing in energy policy. At Tufts I met my wife Debbie which was probably the greatest long term benefit from the experience. Although I loved the program, I did not like working closely with the public sector and ended up directing energy research for a non-profit law firm in Boston. In 1985 I got married, quit my job, and moved to Worcester, Massachusetts so Debbie could assume a position with the Massachusetts Audubon Society in her home town. Six months later I found a regional sales manager's position for a company which designed and built industrial wood energy systems for the forest products industry. Twelve years later the Company went bankrupt and I teamed up with the Operation Manager to start Biomass Combustion Systems Inc. Four years later we are still burning trees while Debbie continues to hug them with Mass. Audubon.

Fond Hamilton Memories

My life is currently filled with job, family and household chores. When I reflect back on Hamilton I marvel at the wonderful social exposure to people my own age. Although I also remember cramming for exams and a lot of hard work, what stands out is the fun I had with a huge number of great people.

Hamilton's Impact on Your Life and Values

Hamilton's reputation certainly opened doors for me when I applied to Grad~ate School. More importantly, I have stayed in close contact with a number of my good frie~~s from Hamilton. Although we have all changed over the years, our common experience at • Hamilton makes for special friendships that would be extremely difficult to duplicate today.

Hamilton's Impact on Your Life and Values

Other than the ~alue of a liberal arts education and the low student-teacher ratio which made the education great, I regret not takmg more advantage of the facilities and education. I was able to enjoy law school and business school that much more because of the discipline that I learned.

After 18 years in Poughkeepsie, NY, I moved here to California and work in IBM's relational database area. I've also been chair of the Cleveland Music School Settlement. The key focus has been my family. We have done all of the usual things including cub scouts (I was the pack leader and often the den leader), sporting events, etc. I have been on the board of their school for the last 4 years. Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years

Lots of rambling man action in the 70's. Settled into home renovation and other construction work in Boston area in the 80's. Married first wife in 1989. We moved to Navajo Nation in Arizona to live and teach. Marriage didn't take. Arizona did. Married wonderful current partner Kathy in 1998. We really enjoy Flagstaff and the surrounding natural areas. Regularly hike Grand Canyon with Loon buddies and others around Columbus Day weekend. Anyone still going for those "carryover" sports is welcome to get in touch Or anyone just coming through the four comers area.

Fanguitos, Leonce and Lena, Root Glen, Watkins Glen, the Adler Conference working as hard as we played (pretty hard), my only real responsibility being to learn, the fact that a course named 'The Great Chain of Being' even existed, knowledge valued--these things and many more enthralled me throughout.

Hamilton's Impact on Your Life and Values

Liberal arts education serves me well every day. I still try to instill the 'lovers of wisdom must know many things' esthetic in my current students. Seems harder to do every year. TV is winning. The earned priveledge of a broad spectrum of knowledge has, in my life, contributed to the continued renewal that a thinking-person's life provides.

I am truly blessed in the nuclear family department. My wife, Leslie Walker, is an inspiration and mentor as a parent to our two boys, Sam (age I 0) and Jesse (age 6). Leslie is the Executive Director of Massachusetts Correctional Legal Services, dedicated to the hard job of providing legal services to the incarcerated of the Bay State. My boys are great and we enjoy the Boston Red Sox, camping and music (although I have better taste).

Like many of you, I finally got around to getting a law degree, although I honestly thought that I would be the last person on the planet to do so. Since 1985, I have practiced exclusively in the area of land conservation. In 1990, I joined the legal staff of The Nature Conservancy and have remained there happily ever since. I remain an unrepentant liberal Democrat and am saddened to see our country's slide to the right. I am quite active in town politics in my little town of Belmont, MA and remain optimistic that positive change is possible.

I started Hamilton in the Class of 1975, just one of many reasons why my memories may differ from yours.

Fond memories include: Kirkland College as a living, breathing, creative institution; living in Root Dorm as part of the first wave of co-ed living; hanging out with the gang at WHCLFM; sitting in Jay Williams' classes and having my mind stretched in ways that I am just beginning to appreciate; Fanguitos (not sure how it should be spelled); SPRING, which usually began the day before summer break; many, many many hours at the Pub; film classes with Nat Boxer and J.J. Murphy; watching Buzz Morison mix wildly clashing music from three different turntables at the radio station.

Despite the above drivel, I learned to write at Hamilton. It was painful but I am forever grateful. Hamilton also gave this naive 17-year old his first up-close and personal look at the class system that divides and ultimately runs this country. Hamilton gave me a liberal arts education -a truly wonderful thing. Have a great time at the reunion!

Family Life: "How Sweet It Is" --and they were kind about following along with me on that circuitous and lengthy route through the eastern US.

Bio Sketch of the Last 25 Tears: [sic] Can be described best by a few of my 'letters':

-JYIF: I still look back fondly on that magical year in Paris. While relegated to hobby status, my fluency in French has been of occasional use in business & pleasure.

-MHA: As a master's degree is not regarded as a 'terminal degree', I could not devote more than ten of my working years to healthcare administration.

-NHA: Certification as a nursing home administrator did not 'hit the spot', nor did it relieve the profession's stress levels for me.

-TQM: Lucrative & rewarding did not describe total quality certification.

-MCSE: My return to another hobby, computers, has been more fulfilling on a personal level and highly enjoyable on a day-to-day basis.

-MCT: Gaining certification as a computer trainer has 'really put the icing on the cake' for me, as training others in a 'hobby' I love is like playing-all day!

Current Interests: Aiming for 'jack of all trades/master of: barbecue, family life, ham radio, gardening, landscaping for wildlife.

Hamilton's Impact on Life & Values: As noted above, I still look back fondly on that magical year in Paris. In addition, those Hamilton years were the beginning of an extended-and enjoyable-search for knowledge, first to know myself, and secondly to catch up-and keep up--with the world and its skills and teachings.

Family: Paula (Wells College), Maggie (10) and Peter (5).

Bio for the last 25 years: Like one or two other brand new Hamilton grads, I had little idea about what my lifelong career would turn out to be once I left the Hill. Fortunately, I had strong opinions about what I liked and what I didn't like, and a good sense about what my skills were. So immediately after graduation, myself and a few friends tossed a coin to decide whether Boston or New Y.ork would be the best place to launch our careers. Tails (Boston) won, and by September I had landed my first job at Fidelity Investments headquarters in downtown Boston. I had always been attracted to the securities business, and eventually wound up spending 10 years at Fidelity getting paid to get a grad school-type education the securities business. Most of my time was spent working in the institutional marketing area.

My wife Paula and I were commuting into the city from Marblehead one day in the mid 80's when we had a "Green Acres revelation." Shortly after, we found ourselves living in our current home here in Stowe, Vermont. She's now a real estate attorney and I own Pinnacle Advisors, a small investment management firm serving higher net worth clients around the country.

Current Interests: I teach snowboarding at Stowe on Fridays. Favorite sports include mountain biking, tennis and more recently, water skiing. Because I love my work, I am perpetually interested in learning more about securities and how to best use them for my client's benefit.

Fond Hamilton Memories: Too numerous to mention, but a few include Hamilton sports (hockey and football games), English classes with Fred Wagner, Steak Nite and, of course, House parties.

Hamilton's Impact on my Life and Values: Hamilton taught me a few things that were more important than the course material I studied, including the importance of a liberal arts education's broad perspective, and the willingness to pursue big challenges with confidence. Hamilton's reputation has been a great benefit and the subject of many enjoyable conversations.

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years

After Hamilton, I headed for Cornell Law School. Despite the grind of law school, I had the good sense (and great fortune) to marry Lori Alteri whom I'd met during Hamilton days at the Village Tavern. We looked at NYC and Boston, but they didn't seem to fit. After a year of clerking for a Federal Judge in Hartford, we discovered Portland, Maine. This was the right fit for us, and we've lived here happily since 1980. Instead of the 200 plus law firm that I'd worked for in Boston, I settled on a 7-lawyer firm (now 14) as a 'quality of life' choice. I've also found time to teach as a visiting instructor of trial practice at the Harvard Law School, but I intend to practice law until I drop in the courtroom. My small law firm and the city of Portland have lived up to all hopes and expectations. Instead of 2400 billable hours, I've been a 'Suzuki violin Dad' and a 'soccer Dad' and a 'skating Dad.' Family time has provided fulfillment and rewards I couldn't have imagined.

House Parties, Sage Rink, Sid Wertimer at Monday morning chapel, John Fusaro's 'home cooking' at DKE

After 4 wonderful years at Hamilton, I entered the graduate program of pharmacology at New York Medical_ College where I spent 4 years in completing all academic requirements. Subsequently, I spent 2 and a half years at Cornell University as a post-doctoral research fellow working on a diabetes research project. While I was at Cornell, I had the good fortune of meeting my wife, Bernadette. After completing my research fellowship, I entered the civil service to become a bureaucrat at US EPA. I have remained at EPA while moving through different regulatory programs (such as toxic substances, radiation, air, or water). Currently, I have been working on pesticides regulations specifically dealing with international regulation~f pesticide residues in food. I am enjoying my work and the opportunities to meet and e?'change views with representatives from various countries.

One of fondest memory that I have is going to the Saturday night movies on campus. During the movie, inevitably someone would utter a witty and appropriately timed joke at certain scenes sending everyone laughing for minutes. I also miss the tranquility of the snow fall on the Hill, the opportunity for cross country skiing, and recreational squash games with friends.

Following graduation from Hamilton, I enrolled at New York University; I received a Juris Doctor (J.D.) and a Master of Laws (LL,M,) in Taxation from the School of Law and a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from the Graduate School of Business Administration.

I started my legal practice with a private firm in Tampa, Florida, specializing in commercial litigation. A few years later, I joined the United States Attorney's Office in the Southern District of Florida, first litigating civil disputes out of the Miami 6ffice and later prosecuting criminal matters out of the Fort Lauderdale Office. In 1988, I was appointed as a judge of the Broward County (Fla.) Court. And in 1991, I was appointed (and currently serve) as a magistrate judge in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Fond Hamilton Memories

My fondest Hamilton memories are .of playing on the Soccer Team and participating in the Washington Semester Program.

My first day at Hamilton - even before class began - was spent practicing on the soccer field with coaches VonSchiller and MacDonald and with teammates who became good friends. I looked forward to practices and games as a welcome respite from the rigors of study.

The Washington Semester Program exposed meto the world of politics and provided a unique opportunity to observe first-hand the operation of government. My legislative internship· with former U.S. Rep. Williams. Cohen and my executive agency internship with the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights both educated and inspired.

Hamilton's Impact on Your Life and Values

The Hamilton curriculum helped develop analytical, verbal, and written skills that have proven beneficial in work and study. But even more importantly, the Hamilton Honor Code nurtured a sense of integrity that has proven invaluable in all aspects of life.

I later joined a United States subsidiary of a publicly traded Swedish corporation as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, where I conducted consulting assignments in organization strategy, design and compensation, and provided financial oversight for 16 offices in seven countries. I also was a partner in a wholesale distributor of tools and material handling supplies. Prior to attending graduate school, I served as Assistant Director of Development and Director of Alumni Affairs at The Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Connecticut.

I received a Master of Business Administration degree in management and corporate strategy from the New York University School of Business.

Most of all, I remember a few friends, the fraternity house, long winters, and developing an appreciation for hockey.

Hamilton's Impact on Your Life and Values

Ultimately, Hamilton was not my best experience, but prepared me to be able to embrace and accept change and become the person I am today. Hamilton helped to teach me what not to be, not because anything the college did but for what it did not do, which was to make me confront my version of reality and immaturity.

Working for three years with Jeff on weekly SPECTATOR contributions; making music with Matt and Kerry (probably a not-so-fond memory for neighbors in Bundy, Carnegie and South); my Kirkland friends who helped prepare me for the challenges of relationships and daughters; Steak Nite on steak night, and foosball and pool on the other nights. Becoming a History major and having a friend tell me on the day I was accepted to med school that he didn't know I was "pre-med". I enjoyed some classes too.

The confidence, and curiosity, to ask "why not", and the capacity to sometimes figure out an answer.

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years

Graduating in 1976, I confronted life's perennial decision: join the real world or get lost in some other world. I chose the latter. 6 years later after receiving my PhD in Chemistry from Brown University, I once again faced the same decision. Easy choice. I headed out to Caltech on a postdoctoral holding pattern for two years. Not a bad decision as my advisor eventually won the Nobel Prize. He says I was 7.2% responsible. However, I couldn't avoid the real world forever and I took a research position at a government lab and over the next 12 years carved out a rather notable career. However, for those at Hamilton who remember my many small business ventures (I think it was called hustling at the time), it will come as no surprise that I decided to try a new funding mechanism for my research. I started a business. Syagen Technology is no Agilent, but then again Agilent is no Syagen either. Running a high growth technology company is a great way to pretend you are in control, when in fact it controls you. No matter, the work is exhilarating; all 100 hours a week of it.

Current Interests: Keeping up with the whirlwind of kid's activities and adjusting to a life of a traveling hockey team parent. Pretending that my knee and back are not troubling me and ignoring the gray that is sprouting all over my head.

I have many fond memories of my Hamilton days, I just don't remember them.

Hamilton has taught me discipline and instilled in me the insight to realize that no matter how hard I work, I am still an idiot.

Family Life (spouse, children, etc.)

I've been in Indiana for 25 years?! It can't be! I headed west after leaving Hamilton the way a salmon heads back to the stream from which he started, but I think they dammed my river. I spent 14 years at Purdue University. The first 4 earning a Ph.D. in physiology and pharmacology through the Biomedical Engineering Center and the Vet school. The next 10 conducting a wide variety of biomedical research and teaching in the Biomed Center. When the pain of university politics and the relentless pursuit of government grants exceeded the joy of research, I jumped ship. For the past 11 years, I have worked with a former grad student colleague who had started a small medical engineering and development company aptly named MED Institute, Inc. Now I conduct clinical trials primarliy on devices for interventional cardiology, with forays into other medical arenas. And instead of begging NIH, I engage in friendly battles of wits with FDA. Believe it or not, it's kind of fun, definitely challenging, and I think we do some good for people along the way. That is, after all, the goal. I married Chris in 1989 and have had nothing but good luck since then. Being a good western New York farmer's daughter, she simply had to start a zoo. It began with a dog and 2 horses. Since then we have added numerous cats, another dog, 3 kids, 2 ponies (with a 3rd coming next week), 6 ducks, 2 guinea pigs, 1 parrot and I rabbit. Who could ask for anything more? Life is good.

Does anyone else remember freshmen orientation week and how the dedication of the new library was celebrated with a tap truck from the Utica Club brewery parked out front? I didn't realize you actually had to pay for beer until I left Hamilton.

At Hamilton, all students are treated with respect. Professors and administrators speak and listen directly to students, not through intermediaries. Everyone's opinions and ideas are worthy of attention. I try to carry on that tradition at home and at work.

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years /)q,,.,cl { I 2) fqy/q ( 7)

After I left College Hill I spent a year in Boston, volunteering for legal services and making tacos and enchiladas in a Mexican restaurant in Harvard Square. I shared an apartment with Doug Newman '76 and some mutual friends. I entered Cornell Law School in the fall of 1977. It was a turbulent few years, with some personal crises and difficulties, and I ended up taking a long leave of absence from law school between 1980 and 1982. During that time I lived in Boston again, as well as Bridgeport, Connecticut, doing neighborhood organizing for an an organization called ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now). I finally returned to Cornell Law School in the fall of 1982 and completed my studies there and received a J.D. in January 1983. After law school I had more personal crises to weather. I finally got through them and took the bar in July 1984, and I began my legal career as a legal counsel at the headquarters of the National Labor Relations Board in Washington, DC in September 1984. I spent three years working in different offices of the NLRB in Washington, and in 1987 I transferred to the Board's Regional Office in Philadelphia. I was married to Barbara A. O'Neill, also an attorney at the NLRB, in Philadelphia in 1988. In 1989 I took a job with a law firm called Spear, Wilderman, Borish, Endy, Browning & Spear in Philadelphia. I represented labor organizations and workers and practiced both labor law and workers compensation/disability law on their behalf. At this law firm I met Peggy Browning, a partner at the firm, who was named by President Clinton as a Member of the National Labor Relations Board in March 1994. I persuaded Ms. Browning to take me with her to Washington as her Chief Counsel at the NLRB. Unfortunately, in December 1994 Ms. Browning was diagnosed with breast cancer, and in February 1997 she passed away while still in office. I stayed on at the NLRB, and Peggy Browning's successor, NLRB Member Wilma 8. Liebman, appointed me as her chief counsel in November 1997. I served in that position until December 2000, when President Clinton, as one of his last acts as President, appointed me as a Member of the National Labor Relations Board on December 29, 2000. I was sworn in on December 30, and I am currently serving in a "recess appointment," which will expire at the end of this year's session of the U.S. Senate. I have a wonderful wife and two beautiful children. Our son Steven wants to be in the NBA, and Rose is a beautiful little tap and ballet dancer. I enjoy coaching my son in both baseball and basketball. My career is great, but my family is my true reason for living.

I will never forget playing in the brass choir and the great times on tour with Professor Bonta and the members of the brass choir. I will always remember challenging Latin classes and thought-provoking literature classes with Professor Wagner. I forged the closest bonds with the guys I shared a suite with at Dunham dormitory in 19721973, freshman year, and I will never forget living in that dump. I also, believe it or not, have fond memories of working in the periodicals office at Burke Library.

Hamilton's Impact on Your Life and Values

I may have first learned to read in kindergarten, but at Hamilton I really learned how to do it, in the sense of truly probing for the beauty and depth of literature, whether it be in Latin or English or Russian. I also woke up politically at Hamilton, and gained a sense of compassion and caring for my fellow man which has followed me throughout my career.

Family Life (spouse, children, etc.)

My husband, Trevor Drake (H'75,) and I have 3 sons: Colin, 19, Peter, 16, and Alex, 13. This fall, we celebrate our 22nd anniversary which is pretty cool.

It seems that my life post-Kirkland has broken into intervals. I spent the first 8 years as a television producer at ABC in Pittsburgh, Boston and New York. The work was interesting, challenging, full of variety and stimulating. The next 8 years were spent child-bearing and child rearing which was also interesting, challenging, and full ofvariety(but not stimulating. Rewarding, yes; stimulating no.) I adore my children, am glad I was home with them when they were young, and would not have done it any differently. 9 years ago, I started a graduate degree at the Anneberg School for Communications at the University of Pennsylvania. My studies were interrupted by long-distance caretaking (Ohio and California) for my mother and father who had long-term illnesses and died in 1992 and 1997 respectively. I returned to Penn last year, both to finish the degree and to take a job at the Annenberg Public Policy Center running a research study on the V-Chip.The work is interesting, challenging, full of variety, stimulating, and rewarding (because of the public policy implications) as work should be. Always politically active, I was elected to the local school board 3 years ago.

The sheer beauty of the place. The Glen. Minor Theater where I spent many nights hanging lights and running rehearsal. Snow in May '73. B Dorm. Sam Babbitt. Doug Raybeck. David Locke. Serving on 5 different college committees along side faculty and administrators. The good friends who WERE Kirkland to me.

I learned to think for myself at Kirkland. I learned to take the risk, live with the consequences, and either enjoy the success or try again in a different way. A certain resilience of spirit was cultivated which has stood me in good stead. Kirkland's non-traditional environment was good preparation for a world that has changed rapidly and dramatically in ways our parents could not have predicted. I think of those 4 years as a time which allowed me to meander at my own pace, explore to my heart's content, and eventually, find my way.

I married George Woolley in 1979, thereby adopting an 11-year old daughter (who is now 32). We also have two more daughters, Charlotte (13) and Nina (11).

Within a month of graduation, I moved to Washington, DC, and went to work as a congressional staffer on Capitol Hill. During that time I roomed with two other Kirkland grads, Sarah Gordon and Jane Geery. I married in 1979, instantly became a full-time (step)mother, left the Hill for a "downtown job" with a trade association, took graduate courses in environmental sciences, and started in earnest the intense "balancing act" that most women do. Everything came to a screaching halt for a year or so, however, when I got Hodgkin's Disease. Health restored, I left the trade association after a few years, and went to work as a lobbyist in a large corporation's Washington office. Defying the odds on becoming pregnant after cancer treatment, I went on to have two daughters, who continue to be both blessings and inspirations to me. While my children were still fairly young, I started law school at night, and graduated in 1996. Just two years ago, I left my corporate job and opened my own business, LegisLaw, which is a full-service government relations and lobbying firm in Washington, DC.

Going to Jake's Bakery in the middle of the night, after putting The Spectator to bed. Long walks with my beloved Golden Retriever, Thisbe. The beauty of Root Glen. Watching Josh Simpson from my window in McIntosh as he trudged through the snow toward campus from his lean-to in Kirkland Glen. The Cider Mill. Thought-provoking classes with Nadine George, George Bahlke, and Bob Simon.

The incredible amount of freedom at Kirkland allowed me to explore, stumble, and (eventually) find my own way. I think it also had something to do with (ultimately) making me self-motivated and resourceful. The most lasting impact on my life are the abiding friendships, particularly with Pam Battin, who remains my dearest friend.

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years

I attended law school upon graduation from Kirkland and then landed the poverty law job I had always dreamed of. Twenty-one years later I remain at the same program dedicating my career to helping the poor, elderly and disabled. I still find myself challenged and inspired by the practice of law and what man. I can utilize it to achieve.

one a poverty lawyer and/extraordinary also every aspect of our home life from child rearing to cooking and cleaning. We have two sons and our nights and weekends are consumed by their busy schedules - sports, music and school. I'm truly a "soccer mom'.' these days. In my little free time, I love to travel with my family (the U.S., Europe, Scandinavia), read mysteries, listen to NPR, and hop on my Nordic Track. The past 25 years have been very kind to me.

I met my husband, Doug, at work - so he, too, is We have shared not only a professional life but

Fond Kirkland Memories

I have so many fond memories. First, there are all the wonderful women I met at Kirkland. I am still in touch with many of them, and always find myself inspired by their intelligence, wit and boundless energy. I also vividly remember singing in the choir and going on our spring tours. Finally, I recall my junior semester in Washington, D.C. where I interned for Bella Abzug. That experience will last me a lifetime! Three of us from Kirkland boycotted the Hamilton program that year and devised our own independent studies. It caused quite a stir ... but what were three independent-minded Kirkland women supposed to do?

Kirkland's

Impact on Your Life and Values

Without a doubt, Kirkland has made me what I am today. The strong academics -with emphasis on reading, analysis and writing - help~~e become the caliber of lawyer I am today. The innovations in education (the evaluation system, winter studies, senior project) inspired me to diverge from the mainstream and practice poverty law. I believe "to whom much is given, much is expected." Kirkland prepared me to fulfill this credo in my professional life and love doing it. And, because I adore what I do day in and day out, I am a better mother and wife. I'm eternally grateful for my 4 years on "the hill."

Family Life (spouse, children, etc.)

I have been married for 10 years to Rod Drought. I have a son named Dylan (15) and a daughter named Molly (7).

"What a long, strange trip it's been ... " I lived in NYC post graduation and worked in retail sales at Design Research. From there I moved to Connecticut and continued at DIR until it closed. Worked as a textile designer for the co-owner of Marimekko (true to my Kirkland spirit) and later moved to Boston to work in retail again, at Crate and Barrel. Followed my (then) boyfriend to Rochester, Michigan where I did accounting work for a retail chain and went through the m~jor unemployment rift of the the early 80's. I moved to Denver, Colorado with another boyfriend where I worked as a typesetter for a graphics company and did a lot of skiing. Married in 1983 and moved back to Westchester County, NY to be near family for the birth of our son Dylan. Was a stayat-home mom for a few years until we divorced in 1988. Provided at home day care while I survived as a single mom until I remarried in 1991. Worked as an administrative assistant to a social worker (yes, I did get free therapy as a fringe benefit!). Molly was born in 1993 and our family moved to Arizona in 1995 where we have found good weather, good friends and good fortune. I have been a real estate agent for 5 years and I love it! Rod stays home to care for the house and kids while I support us financially. So although it has taken me all of these 25 years to find myself, my love, and my right livelihood, it has been well worth the trip.

The freedom and independence of living (sort of) on my own while not being responsible to support anyone, including myself!

Kirkland taught me that I could do whatever I wanted to do. It helped me to break out of my shell of conformity and to be a free spirit and free thinker. It also provided the education that I needed to do the myriad of jobs that I have found over the years.

Husband - William A. Pigg (Bert)

In spite of my conviction never *ever* to live in New York City, one June evening m 1976 I wandered into the Metropolitan Opera House for a performance of the American Ballet Theatre. From the nosebleed seats, I watched Mikhail Baryshnikov and Natalia Makarova dance "La Sylphide". I never turned back; stayed there, going to the opera and the ballet, singing with the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players, mostly working for Citibank and rejoicing in everything that was and is Manhattan. That having been said, I moved to New Orleans eight years ago when Bert came to Tulane for law school: Mardi Gras, much butter in the food, balmy winters, unspeakable summers, gentle lifestyle - if a little provincial. Well, *I* left my heart in New York City.

The upside of being in a small city is that I've seriously revived my involvement in theatre and am able to work as much as I want. I,ve received a number of awards for my work, and have had the opportunity to shoot several little films which you will undoubtedly never see. Presently I'm playing Sister in the one-woman show "Late Nite Catechism" which has been running in New Orleans for close to two years. I constantly have plans for other projects; some likely and most fantastic but that,s why we strive for them.

Somewhere along the line I become involved in the low-paying world of non-profits. For the last few years I, ve been with the United Way for the Greater New Orleans Area, working with agencies and programs which focus on results for children and families. I have no children of my own, but many nieces and nephews, which is fine, since I,m a born Auntie. My Aunt Motto is: ,,Laugh at their jokes, give them inappropriate gifts, and send them home at the end of the day.%0 So far it,s worked pretty well.

I, ve had a bit of a roller coaster time of it (haven, t we all?), but I,m still conscious and vertical, and still laughing and singing as much as I can.

The small classes, the seminars. I carry with me the image of Mrs. Colby literally reaching across a table to pull ideas and literary analysis out of me. Is that teaching or is that teaching or what?

I couldn't put a finger on anything really specific to say clearly "this has had an impact on my life." That's a pretty big call. Maybe I can say that I learned to ask questions and to expect, if not answers, then surely an idea of where I might find those answers myself.

After graduation, I ended up selling popcorn in a movie theatre! From this glamorous position, I ended up with four partners owning a business that ran repertory cinemas but has since evolved into a video and DVD sales and rental chain of 6 stores. The stores, TLA Video have won numerous awards and we are currently the 12th highest grossing chain in the c~untry. Much of this is due to the fact that we also developed a mail order business. and Internet division (www.tlavideo.com) that is growing by 300% annually. I am the Chief of Operations. I also oversee personel and the accounting departments and am second in command of the 150 employee company. I love my job and am very proud of what we have accomplished. The partners celebrate our 20th anniversary this May!

Cold winters and even colder beer! Olive the dog. Steak night and Steak Night. Anthropology and photography courses. Buttons that said "Uppity Women Unite." Hanging out with: Nellie, Rachel, Patty, Patti, Robin, Robin and countless others.

Sad memories: the demise of Kirkland as a college for women.

I feel very strongly that being in a woman's college enabled me to develop leadership skills that I might not have acquired elsewhere. Being the only women among four male partners and managing som many people, these are skills that have been i_nvaluable. Having evaluations instead of grades taught me the value of feedback. Bemg on so many different committees taught me how to compromise and get along with others with different opinions. Being on the trustee commitee: Kirkland as a College for Women reinforced my feminist ideas and ideals.

My family includes my husband Peter, Hamilton '75, Mark 22, David 20 and Alison 15. It seems impossible that it has been 25 years since we graduated from Kirkland. I don't feel any older than I was 3 0 years ago when I first came to Clinton to look at Kirkland. It is only when I remember that my youngest daughter is almost that age that I feel that old. In the time since Kirkland I have been a full-time Mom, returned to graduate school and am now the children's librarian at the Kirkland Town Library in Clinton. My job combines my two loves-children and books. My husband Peter works in information systems at the Carrier Corp. in Syracuse. Mark graduated in the class of 2000 from Swarthmore and is living in Philadelphia and figuring out the rest of his life. David is a sophomore at Nazareth College in Rochester, majoring in history. Alison is tenth grader at Clinton High School and almost old enough to think about college. In the past few years, I have worked hard to find the balance between family, work and me. I look forward to continuing my search and making many new discoveries.

The apple trees in bloom behind "B".

The windows in the dorms.

Living, working and studying in a community of women. The faculty and staff at Kirkland who devoted such energy and caring to the growth of students and scholars.

Kirkland encouraged me to grow and learn and explore. The impact has been crucial to my personal development and growth-encouraging me to question and learn throughout my life.

I continue to believe that for many young women a women's college can provide the supportive, nurturing, academic environment they need.

Over the past 25 years I have balanced parish mm1stry and journalism. After graduating from Princeton Theological Seminary, I hung out in Princeton, working as an adminstrator for the township. It was in Princeton that I began to learn the craft of journalism. Returning to seminary for a year, I was ordained an Episcopal deacon in 1984. From then on, I worked in various Philadelphia area parishes, while writing for Episcopal news outlets, the national religious press and, periodically, the Philadelphia Inquirer. I got married at the ripe old age of 37 to another priest. Although I grew up in Brooklyn, NY, I am now basically an adopted Philadelphian, having served parishes that are incredibly diverse, both economically and liturgically. I wrestle with the "Main Line" viruses of overachievement, material wealth and Daytimers stuffed to the max. I love my work, and I'm crazy about my ebullient and assertive kids, but I miss the balance of writing and ministry. Who knows where the Holy Spirit will move me next? I hope it involves more writing and reflection (don't we all?).

Walking down to the bakery (which isn't there anymore?) to buy hot ra1sm bread. Walking the campus in the snow, looking at glorious trees against the blue sky. Spending summers living in Hamilton frat houses or house sitting. Cooking with my friends in our tiny little kitchens.

Gosh: That's hard to say. I came out of a prep school that really nurtured those same values: independence of thought, making the arts as important as the sciences, believing that girls could contribute as much to our community and intellectual life as boys. So Kirkland was more of the same for me (without the ATTITUDE). I actually really profited the more staid, structured courses available in the Englisgh Dept at Hamilton. But I wouldn't trade my wild and wooly drama and music classes at Kirkland for anything. by

One daughter, Kiraleah, 5 years o 1d

After majoring in "The Media & Socio-Political Change," I worked for a film distributor, photography magazine, community organization (helped win a ban on winter shut-offs of utilities!), and eventually went to law school. I worked for Legal Services in Tennessee, the utilities division of the Massachusetts Attorney General (successfully kept pay phones at a dime - until deregulation ... ), and the National Consumer Law Center. I took a break from law for a while and worked for a New Age adult education center. Then back to Legal Services. Now I'm the Senior Attorney at a state agency that represents low-income persons with mental illness. Most of my time is spent fighting privately managed care. I also work with a local progressive newspaper. I dance, took up piano about a year ago, and have high hopes that some day I'll be able to sing well.

Drawing and lithography classes. Hours in the darkroom. Finally understanding the "why" behind scientific endeavors. Pouring through the diaries of Che Guevara and other similar journals in the library. The dazzling beauty of the stars and sparkling snow. Marion Grimes and Cornhill People United.

Kirkland, because it had no required courses, gave me a love of learning. Also, it made me understand the superficial nature of grades, because the evaluations were so much more telling, and helpful.

Married Manny Sargent H'74 twenty years ago. We have three children. Becky, a junior is seventeen and looking at colleges, Ann, a freshman is 15 and Luke is 12 and in the six th grade.

My first job after Kirkland was in Boston and I have been here ever since. I got my Master's in social work at Simmons College after working at MGH for two years. I continued doing medical social work up until my first child was born. I took time off to get every one settled in schools and returned to the field of social work, this time working first as a clinician at a residential school in Needham and presently, in Needham's Middle school.

I remember the friendships and time spent hanging out in each other's rooms or lingering over meals at the dining halls. I did enjoy the social life that was provided by the fraternities, especially at AD and at DKE's gin and juice! I appreciated the relationships that I was able to establish with the faculty over my four years. Especially with Senor Medina who led the trip to Madrid my Junior year.

Taking my daughter to look at colleges has brought back so many of my own memories and the reasons why I applied to Kirkland in the first place. I remember wanting a college that would force me to think and grow in new ways and to appreciate diversity. I have found that I want to be a life-long learner and I have tried to show my children the joy of learning since they were small.

Husband Jay, married 15 years

After Kirkland was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Tonga, South Pacific, working in fisheries. Back in the states, started working in medical research and have more or less stayed in that field and have found it very interesting and challenging. Off and on for 20 years, I worked for one of the pioneers in chemoprevention; that is, preventing cancer with vitamin therapy. In the late '70's most oncologists considered this way-out and radical; now prevention and nutrition are recognized as key to managing this disease. I moved to Houston to work at MD Anderson and just 3 years ago moved to Billings, where my husband Jay is co-owner of a microbrewery, Yellowstone Valley Brewing Company. Jay is also a consulting geologist and teaches at the local college. For 3 years I have coordinated the local community IRB (institutional review board) that reviews/approves medical research. I like that it involves many different organizations involved in research, so I interact with people throughout the community and see many different types of research. I enjoy the mental challenge of keeping up with medical research and changes in the regulatory environment. It's a hot field. This May I will graduate from a master's program in health administration, and I've made the IRB the focus of research for this master's program. I really like Montana and its clean air and wide-open spaces. The people are exceptionally warm and friendly, with an independent spirit like my own. I miss the ocean, but am learning to love the mountains.

My roommate and suitemates are my best memories. My dad joked that I "majored" in pool, and there's some truth to that! I minored in cards and cribbage. I loved the studio arts and the nice campus. Going into town was a refreshing change of pace, and the countryside was lovely.

Being in a graduate program as an older student has invoked many comparisons to the type of student I was a Kirkland---talented and irresponsible are words that come to mind! At 18 more than anything I wanted to get out and experience life---1 found adventure in the Peace Corps. But that early indoctrination fueled a hunger for knowledge and for an "examined life" that I've been learning to live--and appreciate--ever since. There were some great teachers at Kirkland, especially in arts and literature and I remember them with gratitude.

Family: married to George Peppard (H '75).

I've had some fun in the last twenty five years. I've been in partnership with George in construction for the most recent five years, which I've enjoyed immensely. We renovate houses, one at a time, for resale. We do most of the work ourselves, although the aches and pains are beginning to accumulate.

We've also become involved in local land use issues, helping to preserve land for conservation and agriculture.

My other current interests are gardening, working backstage for the local opera company, and squash -the racquet sport.

I have many fond memories of my time at Kirkland. I look forward to our twenty-fifth reunion.

After leaving Kirkland, I immersed myself in the study and practice of Judaism in the Lubavitch Chassidic community of Crown Heights, Brooklyn, combining study with freelance writing on Jewish women's issues. I married and had a family, continuing to write for various publications. I was editor of a kosher cookbook/Jewish lifestyle guide which sold over half a million copies. I divorced in and relocated in 1990 to Rockland County, 2 5 miles northwest of Manhattan, where I remarried, and worked as editor of a local weekly newspaper. For the past 4 years I have worked as Director of Communications at SUNY Rockland Community College. I very much enjoy being back in an academic setting and putting my energy towards promoting higher education. I also helped start a Hillel chapter on campus, an organization for Jewish students, and recently chaperoned a student group on a tour of Israel.

I share my life with my partner, Janet Coleman.

After college, I lived for several years in Chicago (my home town) then in Naple_s,_Florida, and now in the Washington, DC area. I've had a number of jobs that involve wntmg_ or social justice work or both. For the past nine years I've worked as a _writer for a national anti-poverty organization. Writing fiction continues to be my av~cat1on, ~!though I try not to collect as many rejection letters as I did during my years at Kirklan~. Ive had tw? novels published along with some short stories and essays, and am now workmg on my third novel. I can no longer stay up all night.

Talking through the night with my suitemates. Strolling through Ro?t Gl_en deep in conversation with Sarah Tuten. Intense discussions with Nancy Rabmow1tz. The shock I felt when Peter Rabinowitz informed me that yes, the "woman question" discussed b~ 19th Century Russian authors was the same question we were discussing today. Learmng th~ real way to read a book. The Womb Room. The Red Pit. The sense of a new world openrng up.

Kirkland was a place where women came first, where women's thoug~ts, energies and experiences were supported and valued. I have lived that way ever srnce.

I am the mother of Laura,13, Eric,11, and Kevin, 9. I do not work outside the home but enjoy my involvement in school and community activities in Carlisle and Concord. my coparent, Tim and his wife, Anne are part of our blended family.

I've lived in Brooklyn, Durham, Ne, and Seattle. I earned a nursing degree at the University of Washington. I've been a high school science teacher, a research technician and an RN. I've lovee every place I've ever lived and every job I've had. Carlisle is my home, and parenting is the finest job I've had. The people were what made Kirkland so extraordinary for me. Without specific friends, my slippery transition to adulthood would have been a very different experience. Especially fundamental were my dear room mate, Jennifer Hornor, and my friend Joe Shrum.

My recollections of Kirkland have been reinvented by my long and enduring friendship with Maggie Stern, who I really didn't know at Kirkland, but is now an irreplaceable piece of my daily life

The friendships I've formed with Jane Summer, Lynn Kantor, and Nancy Rabinowitz due to our efforts toward the Kirkland Project have been fundamental in my revisiting and redefining Kirkland as part of the essential fabric of my biography.

The seeds planted at Kirkland have borne fruit time and again. I had little idea how I would celebrate again and again my decision to go to a single sex college . I wonder how differently I would see the world, or how the world would see me. But I've been grateful for Kirkland for bringing so much that is so important to my attention.

My stepson, Behailu Binyam, is 26 years old and living in Toronto; my daughter, Maya Binyam, is 7 and thriving in second grade.

For the past 6+ years, I have been a Judge with the U.S. Immigration Court. Before that, I had a solo practice, concentrating in criminal and immigration matters. It's been an extremely rewarding career, as I have been able to merge my interests in anthropology and justice, and enables me to continue learning about the world (although not always the best aspects of the world). I have not been able to pursue my interests in wilderness hiking, other travel or horse training because of being a single parent and highly dedicated to my career. Still, I feel myself meandering through life, having fun and continually being surprised.

Springtime at Fangito's Field (sp?), muddy walks in Kirkland Woods, canoeing Lake George and hiking the Adirondacs, Tuna Melts and Russian Tea at McEwen, SteakNight (both species), Manny's Cheesecake, getting credit for real life and tormenting a long succession of Anthro and Psych profs. Being imbued with the knowledge that I can both satisfy my curiosity and thrive, and that not all those who wander are lost.

Family Life:

married to Ken Kraft, 2 daughters, Eva (17) and Louise (14)

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years:

After graduating from Kirkland, I lived in New York City and attended the Arts Students League until 1979. I married Ken Kraft, who was a graduate student in East Asian Studies at Princeton University. We moved to Kyoto, Japan where we lived until 1984. I had a studio and immersed myself in Japanese culture. Our daughter, Eva, was born and we returned to Princeton. We have lived in Haverford, PA, for 15 years. My husband is a professor at Lehigh University, and I have a studio and work full-time as a painter. Our daughters help to keep our lives full.

fond Kirkland Memories:

My favorite memories come from the hours I spent in Root and Kirkland Glenns, walking and painting. I loved learning to cross-country ski.

Kirkland's Impact on Your Lfe and Values:

While at Kirkland I was given a studio and the freedom to organize my time. This helped me to learn to work regularly as a painter. To this day I have kept the discipline of going to my studio first thing in the morning and remaining there to work throughout the day.

Family Life: I live with my partner, Melissa, and eleven-year-old son, Ben.

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years: My life has taken many twists and turns both professionally and personally. When I graduated from Kirkland, I was intent on becoming a psychologist, but realizing that I was not emotionally ready to become a helpful one, I chose my first career as a college administrator. Moving from the idyllic country setting of Clinton to the West Side of New York City to pursue my masters degree was just the first of many changes and challenges. Predictably, the aspect I enjoyed the most about working in this first field was counseling the students. From there, I earned a second masters and a doctorate in Counseling Psychology, experienced a lot of life and went through enough therapy to become what I originally wanted to grow into. Just as I was ready to do that, I turned 40 and divorced the woman to whom I had been married for 1O years and moved out with our son, then age four. I was underemployed, over-educated, in far too much debt and my private practice was floundering because managed care had taken over. The only thing I could do was to live each day and rebuild my life. Seven years later, I am remarried to a wonderful, funny and kind woman. Ben has grown into a bright, creative and self-assured boy. We have joined a cohousing community where we will own a beautiful townhouse in Cambridge. I have paid off all my debts, even my education loans! My private practice is overflowing and I have entered a demanding new career as a school psychologist in two inner-city schools.

Fond Kirkland Memories: On my way to class, I often picked an apple off one of the nearby trees and munched it for breakfast. I remember when I first realized that I was smart and teachers believed in me. I loved swinging on the large rock swing before dinner. My dog, Jeremy, came with me my first year. I'll never forget how this little mutt led the much larger dogs as they roamed in packs around campus. When I came out as a lesbian in my junior year, other women embraced me and chorused, "It's about time Loomis! We were wondering when you'd figure this out." And then feeling the acceptance and ease of holding my lover's hand, walking around campus without a self-consciousness of being different, at least not in that way.

Kirkland's Impact on My Life and Values: Pursuing dreams, even though the path may be circuitous and uncharted. Taking risks, personally and professionally, and trying out different ways of knowing myself. Looking at problems from many perspectives and letting my creativity and perseverance pull me through.

One child: my dear and wonderful son Nelson, who is 12 years old. I have been divorced and living as a single mom for the last ten years. Our little family also includes a parrot named Mack, a red eared turtle named Fred and a very small freshwater fish named Fiche.

I left Kirkland with an intense love for photography. That love has lasted and grown... and although I have attempted other careers now and then over the years ...I owned an art gallery ... worked at the George Eastman House did children's theater. had a short stint as a real estate agent. and a longer one as president of the board of a couple of homeless shelters... It has always been photography and making photographs that has called to me and held my attention. I am an artist full time now and I am showing in various galleries .... here and there ...

I am presently engaged to a wonderful man who 1s the reason Nelson and I may be moving back to Boston in the summer ...

Those glorious days on the hill when the everything in sight began to bloom and I and my two companions (you know who you are) emerged from another upstate winter to romp in the general direction of the Hamilton dorms, arm in arm, flower garlands on our heads, dowsing for distractions in the form of studious young men and running like madwomen through the graveyard and beyond, full of joyful mischief. Have I said too much? ... That memory and so many fond memories of Dan ... (he knows who he is) ... Katie ... Leslie Colie George Lisa Liz Clarke and so many others ... Miss you all! Wish I could have bee there this year!

Steven Liebman. Professor. Friend and mentor. He introduced me to a world of images, image making and the pursuit of personal expression which has enriched my life and has, in fact, become inseperable from it.

Husband, Peter Thomas Barnum (yes, it's true, I am Mrs. PT Barnum!) Daughter, Mei Lu, age 31/2

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years: After leaving .Kirkland, I settled in Boston, Mass. I entered a training program in computer programming at John Hancock Insurance which led to a full time job in programming. After about 2 years, I left John Hancock and continued working in the computer field in programming and systems analysis. I was at Boston College (MIS dept), then MITRE Corp., then New England Telephone/Nynex. While at MITRE I also went to graduate school nights and got my master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science in 1986. In 1987, I did an about face and started my own interior decorating business, a Decorating Den Interiors franchise, which I am still running. I married in 1985, have a 3 1/2 year old daughter and am thinking of closing my business to be a full-time mom. I guess you could say .Kirkland helped me gain the self-confidence, determination and flexibility I needed to be able to accomplish and achieve many varied goals.

Fond Kirkland Memories

I remember fondly the friendships and relationships I developed with both students and faculty. I enjoyed especially the beautiful campus on 'the hill' and how easily accessible everything was. The combined .Kirkland and Hamilton campuses were like a small community. I really felt at home with my college 'family'. Whether going to classes, studying at the library, working in the cafeteria, pulling all-nighters, going to the movies, hitching a ride down to Clinton or the New Hartford Shopping Center, going to frat parties, and who knows what else, they all evoke memories - some very fond and some maybe ... not so fond! Oh, those were the days

Kirkland's Impact on Your Life and Values

Kirkland's impact on my life is probably more than I realize and yet without a doubt, profound. How to express it, even harder. But, I am who I am, mainly because a .Kirkland education gave me the strength, independence and confidence to do whatever I wanted as long as I gave it a try. I think the values I have are strong and good and that I will always strive to be the best I can be. The learning and growing process is never done and I honestly hope and believe that my college education is the foundation of my existence today.

Divorced, one daughter, Victoria Lyndon Schacht, 15.

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years

I left Kirkland with no marketable skills. Made a brief but aborted attempt at grad school in fine arts. Eventually went to grad school in Art Therapy in Philadelphia where I lived for IO years. Moved back to my hometown following a divorce. Again, went back to school for a Master's in Counseling. For the past 15 years, I have been raising my daughter and working as a school counselor.

Joel Tibbitts, Jay Williams, and living in an "animal suite". I loved being to have my dog with me, and I loved walking and skiing in the glens.

Kirkland's Impact on Your Life and Values

Kirkland gave me the freedom to learn about myself and explore any number of interests, something kids today do not have as much opportunity to do. I was able to travel, paint, and try out religious studies. I only wish I could go back and redo it with Prozac, maturity, and purpose that age has afforded me.

Life (spouse, children, etc.)

Husband, D. Michael, and son, Luke (I 0), three late, lamented hermit crabs (all named Herman) and a cement dog.

After leaving the Hill, I began my teaching career, which I have never left. I returned home with a vengeance --buying my grandparent's house and teaching in my mother's home parish. I earned a Masters Degree in Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh. I was married in 1987 and my son was born during the Gulf War. Perhaps this explains his fascination with things military. Since my parents have died, I keep family history together for my sister and brothers. My special interests in teaching are educating gifted students and ethical uses of technology. Since 1994, I have been training teachers to use technology with students. I recently led the Middle States Association reaccrediation project at my elementary school.

Petitioning to enroll in Calculus even though I was an art major, geology field trips, having my own studio for a senior project, sneaking a giant paper Christmas tree into K-J after a controversy about chopping down live trees, hitchhiking down the hill to have dinner at the Inn on the square.

Husband, Richard Morse, and two sons (Rob,age 15 and Tom, age 14).

After graduating from Kirkland I lived in Hyden, Kentucky and worked for the Frontier Nursing Service, moved to Colorado for 6 months, then returned east to attend grad school @ Pace University, Leinhard School of Nursing. Received Master's degree and RN from Pace; after preceptorship @ Frontier Nursing Service I became a Family Nurse Practitioner. I remained in Dutchess County,NY and worked as an RN on a med-surg unit in a Connecticut hospital, then worked as a nurse practitioner @ Vassar College for 3 years.Subsequently worked at a staff model HMO (CHP, then Kaiser Permanente) for 15 plus years, providing emergency care and primary care to an urban/suburban population. I currently work in a multispecialty group medical practice in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Friday night fresh baked raisin bread from the town bakery; H-K folk festival; Randy Newman concert @ Colgate; XC skiing in the glen; northern lights from the roof of B dorm.

Memorable instructors (Grant J ones,David Miller,Russell Blackwood,Doug Ray beck).

Kirkland's liberal philosophy of education enabled me to explore the health care field. In a tiny office called "options in education" I was introduced to the Frontier Nursing Service, and was able to spend a semester in the Kentucky mountains, where nurses and nursemidwives have been practicing independently since 1925.

Having seen, and briefly lived, a truly privileged lifestyle on the Hill, I hope I have become sensitive to the lives of more ordinary folks. Thanks to my upbringing, I was independent when I got there --good thing, since I was a public school girl from "the Midwest"ern city of Pittsburgh.

Kirkland's Impact on Your Life and Values

I cannot possibly have graduated from Kirkland 25 years ago. Since that time I've experienced living in the frozen land to our north (Canada) and raising three terrific Children My husband Barry and I have settled into suburban life in NJ but we're certainly not finding it stultifying. I've had two full time careers, practicing law and building and renovating houses and I certainly can say the second is m~re satisfyin_gJ'm involved in my community, hopefully setting a good example for my kids. If nothmg else, Kirkland taught me to speak out and take a stand. That embarrasses by kids but I figure if they're not embarrassed I'm not doing my job.

No one thing stands out as a memory. It just seems there was lots of time to talk, explore and grow with a great group of fellow students.

I still think it's important to speak my mind and follow up with action. I stay involved with my kids' school and my synagogue. We should always strive to be unique and be true to ourselves even is that path is a little harder or unconventional.

Family Life (spouse, children, etc.)

I live with Dan Terris and my four sons, ages 8-15, and my FEMALE cat and dog and fish and turtle.

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years

I've gotten two graduate degrees, one in counseling psychology and one in children's literature, and counseled kids in a public middle school in Roxbury, Mass. for 12 years. Then I returned to my original career, which is writing children's books, and have since published five books to date. Often I give children's presentations at schools all over Massachusetts. You can visit my Web site at www.maggiestem.com.

Fond Kirkland Memories

Eating tuna melts and french fries with Jane Katz Summer (who was the first to understand my anxiety attacks)in her Wallabees at Stan's and listening to the Mill's Brothers. Admiring Jean Montalbano in her long flowing cape, being awestruck by the brilliance of her porcelain boxes and her wisdom--our friendship changed my life. Sybille Colby and Natalie Babitt inspired me then and continue to do so every day.

Kirkland's Impact on Your Life and Values

Kirkland made my life. My friendships with Annie Karl and Jane and Jean and Lynn Whitney are my constant support. I see Annie karl on a daily basis. These Kirkland alums have remained my best friends. The little seeds that were planted in me at Kirkland, academically and emotionally, are still bearing fruit.

I was married for a few years in the 80s and have been divorced smce 1989. I have a 1 4 year old son, am amicably divorced, and have joint custody of my son.

I attended Kirkland for my junior year in college only, graduating from Smith College. I graduated from New York Medical College in 1981 on Navy Scholarship. I trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Harvard and then Yale. I served in the Navy from 1986 to 89 at Bethesda Naval Hospital. I was recruited to the National Institutes of Health where I have worked on studies to prevent mother to child transmission of HIV and contraceptive development. For the last 4 years, I have worked at the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health where I am the Chief of the Gynecology Consult Service and participate in other clinical research

I came to Kirkland as a Clinton resident who had spent the first two years at another women's college, Smith. It was great to have co-ed classes and to share North Dorm with so many interesting Kirkland women.

My year taking classes at Hamilton helped me enter the male dominated world of medicine. I have had a successful and interesting career.

Married to Dave Mention for 20 years. Dave recently "retired" from L.L. Bean after 15 years in order to come to Italy where I was offered my current job. A major outdoors person, Dave has been enjoying our proximity to the Alps.

We have two sons: Andy Mention is 16 and a junior at the American School of Milan. An outdoors guy like his father, Andy is giving some serious consideration to applying to Hamilton. Kit Mention is 13 and an 8th grader at the American School of Milan, where he is picking u p Italian at a much faster rate than any of the rest of us. Kit really loves living in Europe.

Can't remember who I am? No great shock there I did 2 years at Kirkland, beginning in January '72, then muddled along until finally receiving a Hamilton diploma in '81 (but under Kirkland's graduation requirements, completed in absentia at a variety of institutions across the country). My long odessey has served me well in my work as a college counselor (after all, I've been to every college ... ).

My husband and I have lived happily in Maine for most of our marriage but recently moved to Italy where I am the high school counselor at the American School of Milan. We are really enjoying the food, wine and travel opportunities to be found in Milan (not to mention the skiing in the nearby Alps), as well as the chance to learn more about a different culture. We are inveterate travelers, and took a four month trip around the world three years ago, so wanderlust runs deep in our blood.

Family Life (spouse, children, etc.)

I was illegally married in 1999 to Isabelle, and we live with our remarkable German Shorthaired Pointer, Bill.

After college I worked the summer in an animal shelter, adopted a German shepherd puppy, and returned to Clinton through the winter where I got frostbite, worked at Keenan's Bookstore, and ate brown rice. Returning to New York with Alonso, I worked the early morning shift at Dunkin Donuts but couldnit abide the polyester uniform and got a job for five years in the newsroom at Womenis Wear Daily. Then I worked as a technician for an irritable veterinarian, danced at the top of the World Trade Center with a cowboy, spent 10 years in womenis magazines, and am going on my seventh year as an editorial consultant currently working half-time and cheerfully at Biography magazine. In 2000 I had my first novel, The Silk Road, published. I have maintained and re-established many Kirkland friendships and they are vital to me.

the patrician clothing of my classmates in their fair isle sweaters, L.L. Bean boots; the sight of my little brother trekking across the immensely lonely snow plain towards B dorm the time I stayed on campus over Thanksgiving; the wine and cheese-cube receptions; spying on the gay women's meetings; having an interesting admissions interview; the modern architecture, the rock swing, the Red Pit, the waffle ceilings; watching foreign films in the Chemistry building and analyzing them; eating French fries in Bristol with Maggie Stem and discussing anxiety; smoking our heads off without fear of dying; laughing our heads off; walking into town at midnight for hot donuts; being enamored of professors and upper-classwomen; Lisa Jablow singing Telemann in the chapel; Lynn Kanter's wallpaper of rejection slips; watching Leslie Alexander, my freshman roommate, compete in a swim event and suddenly feeling my heart full in my chest; the excitable camaraderie.

Kirkland's Impact on Your Life and Values

Academic assessment by essays and evaluations taught me how to learn and how to write. George Bahlke, Anne Johnson, Naomi Lazard et al. taught me how to read. Kathryn Grover taught me about the semicolon. In a nonacademic vein, my friends and alumnae have given me a sense of belonging, encouragement, and purpose I had never felt before. Kirkland confirmed my independence. There is no more Kirkland. Long live Kirkland.

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years

Last 25 years -Wow. The first few years were spent at Pace University Graduate School in NYC. It wasn't for me. I fell intci a job at Merrill Lynch that became the beginning of a ten plus year career in the financial markets. The last few of those years were spent at BHF Bank and I had a few years of world wide travel, big expense accounts and a respectable income. Something continued to be missing. In 1988, Alexander arrived and my life became full. 18 months later Cassandra arrived and I have never once regretted giving up the career, travel, or money. I have also never been busier. I became community involved the minute we arrived in Franklin Lakes. I have been a school board member for 4 years, trustee of the Education Foundation, VP of the Library Foundation, etc. Somehow, I have also kept Kirkland alive by doing off campus interviews and college fairs for the last 25 years! I Being a full time mom is certainly more demanding than I would have ever envisioned. Now that I do have some "free" time I am going to explore a new sales career. More about that at the reunion.

Fond Kirkland Memories

Fond Kirkland Memories -I have so much to be grateful for my 3 1/2 years at Kirkland. From the minute I arrived, I felt at home. Suite life was very good to me. I seemed to be very fortunate to have good relationships with the women that surrounded me. I learned from them and probably become a better person as a result of one particular friend who helped me through very rough times. She became more family than friend not only to me but to my parents as well.

Kirkland's Impact on Your Life and Values

Kirkland's Impact -This is so easy for me. At Kirkland, and with Sam Babbit's, push, I learned how to take care of my self, stand up for my self and see past what was right in front of me. I have never shied away from any situation and never think that anything is not worth trying. So much of who I am is a result of the lessons I learned from such good fri~nds and teachers (Doug Ray beck, Dru Sherrod,John O'Neill) who forced me to reach higher. I will always be grateful.

Biographical Sketch of the Last 25 Years

The "Kirkland spirit of exploration" describes me, too. After Kirkland I worked for the Dept. of Commerce in DC & lived in Virginia ... followed by a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Europe for 5 glorious months in '80! Then came 2 years with Kodak's Int'l. Division in Rochester, putting my foreign language degree & international experience to work. I trained to be a travel agent, decided it was a crazy way to make a living, & later coordinated a paralegal program at a local college. But since 1990, I've enjoyed the best "job", that of mother to 2 bright, spirited kids (who would have done very well at Kirkland ... ). I get a kick out of being a volunteer in the classroom & chaperoning, and am helping organize Multicultural Week in May. We live in.an 1850's farmhouse & have deer and other wildlife in our big back yard (we're south of Rochester). I've developed a passion for gardening & lately wreath-and ornament-making, a fledgling cottage industry. I'm still calling myself an aspiring writer & have gained experience as a volunteer publicist, writing about my church's mission projects & fundraisers. Two of the most meaningful projects were sending a 2nd-hand bulldozer to NW Haiti and, more recently, arranging to send liveFond Kirkland Memories stock & French Bibles to the same area. This work is more stimulating & rewarding than most of my paid jobs! It's a special time for me, with my parenting role complemented by the intellectual and spiritual challenges of these life-c~anging ministries, helping me truly live my faith.

Kirkland Memories (this should have been a bigger box!): The "Hill" ... small classes ••• stimulating discussions with a lot of bright people ... having several circles of friends ... waffle ceilings ... bright-colored blinds comple menting the grey cement ... great music & delicious spiced cider in the Coffee House, near the "Great Hanging Stone Egg'' ... meals at McEwen, occasionally lunching with our professors ... "German Table," presided over by the inimitable Thomas Colby ... $1 movies in the Purple Pit ... art history & anthropology in the Red Pit ... fresh, hot raisin bread from the bakery ... the freshmen I "took under my wing" ... Sam Babbitt, especially at graduation & in those fun Gilbert & Sullivan productions ... wearing long dresses & carrying daisies, & having my family there for graduation in the big tent ... Kirkland's Impact on Your Life and Values the tiny gold apple pins, a lasting memento of fem· Kirkland, its symbol, & its orchards ... tons of aependence 1 nism writing (electric typewriters: no P.C.'s!) ... in choosing Kirkland in part because of the writing & Cho· the evaluation system ... hating that Senior Project at times but, lees in the end, growing through it ... my heartbreak when I learned . ~\~i that Kirkland as we knew it would no longer exist ... realizing in 11 the long run that I couldn't imagine having gone to college anyc~e r Where else, that I'm who I am in part because of Kirkland .

Biological Sketch of the Last 25 Years: Directly after Kirkland I tried to combine my major in environmental biology and minor in design in the Masters program of Landscape Architecture at Cornell. They were good years that gave me a great deal of direction. Afterwards I spent a year exploring Europe and fell in love with "the old world". I met my future husband in the Swiss Alps. But first I returned to the US and worked in NYC and then taught landscape architecture at Utah State University, which were some of the best years of my life. Tom between the West and Europe, I finally chose the challenging path, married and moved to Germany.

I am not a linguist. My coup at Kirkland was to slide by my language requirement with a summer of Spanish in Mexico. But I paid for it when I moved to Germany. I had no choice but to learn the language, which I did by working in a landscape architecture office, and later I went back to teaching landscape architecture and planning at the University of Hannover. When the children were small, I stopped working and had time to found the International Women's Association of Hannover, where I have made friends with fascinating women from all over the world. Now that the children are older, I am once again teaching part time at the university.

I have seen many changes in Germany over the past 18 years and it finally begins to feel like home. Now, many things that happen in America seem foreign to me and are difficult to understand. Just the same I miss the US and my roots.

Fond Kirkland Memories: Ski touring in the Glen. Hiking in the Adirondecks. Watching Watergate in the lounge. Baking cheese cakes with my roommate, Susan, for the coffee house. Having fun with a self-paced calculus course. Falling in love.

Kirkland's Impact on Your Life and Values. Kirkland was a safe place to grow up. The college years were a time of confusion for me. But I am thankful that I had an environment which focused on women's needs and issues as I was finding myself. Ever since I have tried to build a community of women around me. Whether it is networking with women colleagues or founding a women's support group for foreign women, I have understood the importance of women helping women in my life. And that stems from Kirkland .

Married to Lars Nielsen '77 since 1982. Two sons, Ari (8/84) and Noah (6/88)

BiographicalSketchof the Last25 Years

Thanks to my years at Kirkland, I have been unafraid to take on jobs that I "created" as I went along. I've set up a medical library for doctors, created a technical library/managed an employee training program at a computer company, and wrote book indexes for 10 years at home when my children were younger. I've done freelance photography, and presently work at the Vermont Technical College (VTC) library, appropriately located in the middle of an apple orchard. Some of my "non-workn activities include being the advisor for the VTC Photo Club, and being Trustee of the public library, friends of the library, and synagogue.I love to take photographs, knit sweaters, listen to Joni Mitchell, take walks, read, and watch my sons play sports. Though Lars and I had the same circles of friends at Kirkland, and even worked on a theater production together, we didn't really "meet" until 1979, when we were (separately) visiting the Hill. Our common experience of being at Kirkland has beenan important foundation of our life together. We moved to Vermont in 1989 (from NY), and took the pioneering spirit of Kirkland with us.

FondKirklandMemories

On our first day at Kirkland, Sam Babbitt calling us "more experienced leamers and less experienced learners•, long walks in Root Glen, long talks with Bill Rosenfeld, working as the Arts Division Liaison for the Public Relations office, the smell of fixer in the darkroom, photo portfolios for Steve Leibman , living on the 4 th floor of North, (including group showers and dancing down the hall to Stevie Wonder), walking though the Kirkland tunnels to avoid the snow, hitchhiking to town with Olive (the dog), being part of feminist movement every day, senior writing project with Natalie Babbitt, David Rigsbee, and Michael Burkhard, graduation in gowns under sunny skies, my Kirkland needlepoint, and "The Swing", where Lars and I met. And friends, lifelong friends.

Kirkland'sImpacton Your Life and Values

Because I was allowed to pursue what was important to me at Kirkland (writing, photography, liberal arts), I was encouraged, in the years after Kirkland, to be courageous and creative in manyaspects of my life. I chose not to be a writer after graduation, but I hope to do freelance photography again, and perhaps write. The Kirkland Spirit brought Lars and me to Vermont, and has sustained us through many job changes. Though "Kirkies" are s~attered, and Kirkland College is gone, the spirit of Kirkland will always be with us.

Biographical sketch of the last 25 years:

Since Kirkland graduation, I have been travelling around the world as part of my job and having a lovely time. I pursued my Hamilton-major "geology" for M.A. (Bryn Mawr College 1978) and Ph.D. (University of Texas at Austin 1981) and started as a geologist at Mobil Oil Corp. in 1980. In 1984 I joined structural geology research group at Exxon Production Research Co. in Houston. My work took me to different offices around the world, including Turkey. What fun to be able to visit family while on a business trip! I am now at ExxonMobil Exploration Co. working the globe as external technology coordinator. Visiting university, research labs, industrial associates around the world keeps me technically active and builds lots of frequent flyer miles! I also do lots of volunteer work for professional societies to bring international membership into forefront, and organize technical programs for meetings in such places like Cairo, Bahrain, Istanbul, Rio de Janeiro, Caracas and Nice. I am having lots of fun and learning a lot each day

Fond Kirkland memories:

Geology field trips in NE US and Canada-visiting coal mines in Pennsylvania and exciting lectures by Don Potter--our geology teacher. One of the best I have ever encountered. And both school deans had to increase my field trip allowance in order to have a single room on the trips--being the only female in class was a definite advantage ... And cooking in South Dorm and blowing the fuse while trying to do chocolate mousse!

Kirkland's Impact

Freedom to do what I wanted and pursue interests close to my heart--these were not without a price, but I would not change a thing. And a class on the 'scientific revolution' during my freshman year--I still remember the lectures. It opened up a whole world of discovery for me. And having lots of fun as a foreign student.

Interests

Music, opera and books, as well as travel around the world. I am now working on writing a book on travel stories. And thinking of writing a book on 'perspectives on survival in a corporate world--clash of cultures' ..
