Over the past 18 months, here at Professional Hairdresser, it has been our quest to help you guys navigate the angry waters of the pandemic storm: Striving to be that business bible that you could turn to for advice from business experts and also your peers who were experiencing the same awful predicaments as you were. Since then we have maintained the high level of business articles in the magazine, at your request, covering everything that is relevant in these unusual times and what we are seeing now is that the messages are changing. Having battened down the hatches, the industry is coming up for air again and there is a new positivity on these pages. Understandably there is a long journey to the calm waters we were once used to – but the wind is definitely back in hairdressing’s sails. Think back to 12 months ago and salons were just entering another enforced lockdown which saw the most anticipated, busiest time of the year thwarted – the industry had been returned to the pandemic doldrums. Fast forward 12 months and things are so much more positive. As the year draws to a close we have witnessed the return of large hair events, awards and competitions with many more to look forward to. The buzz is back and long may it last! From all of us here at Professional Hairdresser, we wish you a busy and profitable end to the year. Stay safe and stay strong going into 2022! Merry Christmas!

THE LATEST FROM THE INDUSTRY
BESPOKE BUSINESS The Gina Conway Group launches a franchising opportunity.
Environmentally conscious salon group Gina Conway Salons and Spas, has launched its highly anticipated bespoke franchise opportunity to open more high-end hairdressing salons supporting the industry’s top artisans. Gina Conway and Robin Hague joined forces and set up The Gina Conway Enterprise earlier this year to help deliver the ultimate customer experience across its salons in London, Poole and Winchester. Creating new ateliers, or boutique-style salons, mark the next step in the company’s development, as it aims to become one of the world’s largest sustainable hairdressing groups. Whilst trading under the Gina Conway brand name, hand-picked hairdressers are presented with significant and competitive commercial advantages, including access to a mentoring program developed by Robin and Gina and designed to help launch a successful sustainable salon from the ground up.
Gina, Aveda’s Trade Sustainability Ambassador in the UK, said, “In the post-COVID landscape, where there will be a number of empty office spaces, there is an opportunity for new, innovative businesses to relocate and fill the void. “The Atelier’s focus is on delivering high impact American-style customer service experiences, luxury hair design, lush salon design alongside their sustainable commitment and practices and a female-led nurturing concept, while utilising Aveda’s natural, ethical products, in order to create a unique, profit-making salon.”
A MESSAGE FROM ANDY PHOULI AND STELL ANDREW, JOINT CEO’s OF RUSH HAIR: “It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we are letting you know that our friend and colleague, Chris Williams passed away after a very short illness. Chris was a larger-than-life character and was known and loved by our Rush family and the industry, not only in the UK but throughout the hairdressing world. In his role as International Colour Director, he changed the way we looked at colour, he inspired and motivated so many people both at Rush and those who attended his training courses and seminars. As an educator he was selfless, sharing his skills and passion for the industry with so many. Our thoughts go to Chris’ family, his wife Sophie, daughter Lily and Julieanne, Laura and the team at Chichester along with our Rush Family who all looked to Chris for his wise words, guidance and of course for his inspiration. The contribution he made to Rush was incredible – the awards and accolades received were richly deserved and received by Chris in a humble yet appreciative way – as Andy Heasman who travelled the world with Chris said, “he has the heart of a Viking and the soul of an angel. A shining star has left us. Chris will be missed by us all, he will always be our ‘Colour Man’, we will love you forever and will never forget you. Your legacy lives on through your work.” Love Andy, Stell and the Rush Family. xx

Colour Comes to Camden WELLA PROFESSIONALS ANNOUNCES WINNERS FOR THE UK & IRELAND TRENDVISION AWARD 2021. The TrendVision Award UK & Ireland 2021 winners have been announced at the live Grand Final event, which took place at London’s iconic Roundhouse. More than 700 guests joined the event live with more joining digitally on the evening, to celebrate the many talents who made it to the final stage of the competition and crown the winners of 2021. The night was hosted by broadcaster and style icon, Fearne Cotton, who was joined by Wella’s legendry artist, Patrick Cameron. Guests started the night with a drinks reception, followed by a 3-course meal, live hair shows and before the much anticipated awards ceremony. As with every TrendVision, the night was an opportunity to see four incredible, exclusive presentations from hairdressing industry legends. Whilst each show was completely unique, there was one overriding thread throughout: Sustainability. Robert Eaton’s show entitled ‘Dark into the Light’ delivered a contemporary editorial catwalk show, inspired by light, with a strong sustainability and environmental message. D&J Ambrose named their show ‘The Lost City - Orient V Occident’. Guests were treated to a fusion of colour and texture, combining a nod to grunge with pure, premium colour tones, and couture fashion-slaves sporting intense hair colour looks. HOB Academy presented ‘Lunascape’ - a
collection of bespoke looks, encapsulating street and catwalk trends, featuring an array of classic and advanced cut and colours. Finally, the ghd show did not disappoint. Its ‘Jungle’ collection by James Earnshaw and the ghd team unleashed a powerful, raw mix of volume, movement and texture, with exaggerated shapes at their finest. Robert Eaton “TrendVision is without doubt the highlight of the hairdressing calendar, and to be back together again after what has been such a tough time for our industry, is simply wonderful. The atmosphere in the Roundhouse tonight is electric and I don’t think I have ever seen so many happy, vibrant people celebrating Patrick Cameron their combined success. Every single finalist that is here tonight deserves recognition – you have all achieved something momentous. Let’s make this a night to remember,” said host, Patrick Cameron.

PEOPLE SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL INTERNATIONAL AMBASSADORS
HOOKER AND YOUNG Michael: Ann, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us, we are thrilled to have this opportunity. Of course, everyone knows you as ‘Ann Herman from The Fellowship’ – but we want to go way back where it all started. Ann: Well first of all – I’m ancient now! I’m the same age as Her Majesty the Queen – born in 1926 making me 95 years of age. Michael: WOW! You are amazing Ann! Ann: I’d always wanted to be a hairdresser, and when I left school I told my mother and father who were actually disgusted! You’d think I’d told them I was going to walk the streets – they thought it was a dreadful idea! Gary: So, I’m guessing they stopped you from doing hairdressing? Ann: Well – I was very persistent and determined to become a hairdresser, however the war had come along and because of my age I joined the services and spent my time in the Royal Naval Nursing Service, which was one of the best times of my life. There was just a wonderful camaraderie with the people you’d meet through the services – you were never alone, never lonely, you were always well fed and very well looked after. I enjoyed my time in the services very, very much. Michael: What happened after you left the services? Was hairdressing still something you wanted to pursue?
In Conversation with...
Ann: After the war I decided to go back to my hometown of Perth in Scotland and pretty much straight away decided that it just wasn’t for me. I headed back down to London and got myself a job in a salon in Victoria and stayed there for some years as I’m not one for flitting around. From there, I took another job in a very busy salon in Brixton would you believe, which wasn’t a very salubrious area at the time – but the salon was very busy, and I learnt such a lot during my time there. After that I moved to a very posh salon in the West End and hated every minute of it!
Ann Herman
Legend, icon and hairdressing’s national treasure – at 95 years of age Ann Herman has been part of so many hairdressing journeys. Fighting fit and loving life – we chatted with Ann about her amazing career in both The Fellowship and British Hairdressing in celebration of the truly amazing lady that she is.

Michael: (Hahaha) Why? What made you hate it? Ann: Well – it just wasn’t very friendly – I found it very impersonal, not a nice place to work at all. I much preferred the friendliness of the previous salons. Gary: It must have been around this time when you met your husband Sid – you’ve been together for a long time. How did you meet? Ann: Yes – Sid and I have been together for 67 years – he’s 96 and as fit as a flee. We met through a client of mine – I was doing her hair and she told me she was having a Christmas party and would I like to come. So of course, I said yes and that’s where I met my husband – Sid was her brother-in-law. Michael: 67 years! That’s incredible – and so lovely that you’ve shared such a long life together. Has Sid always been fully supportive of your work as you’ve been a very busy woman over the years?
Ann: Oh yes! I couldn’t have wished for a more supportive husband than Sid – it has to be said that every single thing that I have done throughout my career, he has supported me the whole way. Michael: That’s amazing and so good to hear – relationship goals right there! Ann: Sid has also enjoyed the hair industry very much – he’s attended so many events over the years and also made some great friends. Gary: When did you first become involved with The Fellowship? Ann: I became a member of The Fellowship in the 70’s and there was a person at the time, Christopher Mann who was very high up and we got on extremely well. Michael: At what point did you start to get more involved? Ann: I was always a very hard worker – I don’t like sitting around on my bum doing nothing and Christopher recognised this and took me everywhere with him. He included me in everything he did which meant I just worked my way up from there.
eye on many things – I loved him very much and was broken hearted when he passed, I do miss him. Gary: You’ve been part of The Fellowship for over 50 years! I know this is most probably a difficult question to answer but – are there any stand out moments that are really special to you? Ann: I’ve got to say – the first time I went to the States with Christopher, it was to take the first F.A.M.E Team out there to do a show. I remember we are all quite nervous and apprehensive about the trip – we really thought the Americans were going to blow us out of the water – how wrong we were! We wiped the floor with them (Hahaha), so much so we were invited back the following year. I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time in The Fellowship. Michael: I guess this not only launched the F.A.M.E Team but also reinforced how amazing us Brits are in the world of hair. Ann: Absolutely – I was prepared to sit there open-mouthed at the Americans, but they were nowhere near as disciplined or well prepared as we were. I’m a great disciplinarian you see. Gary: We know you are Ann! (Hahaha)
Michael: You must have been incredibly close to Christopher, spending that much time together. Ann: We were – don’t get me wrong, at times we would fight like cat and dog when we didn’t agree on something, but we loved each other. We would stay at each other’s homes and saw eye to
Ann: You can’t get anywhere unless you have discipline – that is one of The Fellowship’s secrets of success. Do what you’re told and obey the rules. Michael: The Fellowship is celebrating 75 years! What impact has it had on your life?

PEOPLE
Ann: The people I’ve met – and there’s been a lot! All the big names in the industry, the top hairdressers who are all an absolute pleasure to work with. It’s like an extended family, many of whom have become personal friends. Michael: You mention the hair industry feeling like a big family and I agree, but I also think that The Fellowship is largely responsible for this as its events bring everyone together. It’s quite unique to the UK though don’t you think? I’ve never seen this in other countries. Ann: Oh, I know – as soon as you visit other countries you quickly realise that. We travelled a lot, all over the world and it’s true – you don’t find it anywhere else. Michael: We, like you, feel very fortunate to have met so many people and made some incredible friendships that may never have happened if not for Fellowship events. Ann: Isn’t it just lovely when you can go to an event and meet up with your friends. I feel sorry for anyone who doesn’t have this or experience it – you don’t know what you’re missing. It’s such a wonderful association to belong to – you learn so much and everyone is so open to share, I just love it! Gary: When you had your 90th birthday you were thrown a surprise party. How did it feel to have so many people wanting to share in your special day? There was so much love for you. Ann: On the actual day I genuinely had no idea it was happening – Julie Bellinger had persuaded me to go for lunch and afterwards said ‘let’s go for a drink at this hotel across the road’. When I went in there, I got the shock of my life! I couldn’t believe my eyes – so many people sat there – I just couldn’t understand why they would all be there for me. Michael: How does it feel to have so many people hold you in such high esteem? Ann: I rely on all these people as much as they rely on me, whether they’re a new member or personal friend. But it’s very flattering to have people wanting me for something, I’m always delighted to help anyone.
Michael: Ann, you’ve been highly honoured within The Fellowship: Fellow with Honours, Fellow with Distinction, Gold Medal recipient and Patron of Honour, this must make you feel incredibly proud. Ann: I can honestly say with my hand on my heart that I have never sought any of these awards – they’ve come to me. I’ve never ever thought that I deserve any of it, I never looked for it. I am however so grateful – it’s lovely and comforting to know that people think so well of you.
so many new people and learn something new every day. Don’t isolate yourself and think you’re the best salon in your town (you might well be) but start mixing with other salons and you’ll quickly realise that you don’t know everything. Hairdressing has so much to offer but you’ve got to put yourself out there. Michael: Ann – thank you so much, this has been wonderful!
Gary: Ann – we’re speaking to you now and I honestly can’t believe you’re 95! What is your secret? Ann: I’ll tell you why – it’s because I’m always around younger people like yourselves and that is the secret. Michael: Would you say age is a state of mind? Ann: Definitely! I’ll tell anyone who will listen – it’s all in your own head, it’s a state of mind. I don’t want to surround myself with old people who are telling me how bad their arthritis is – I like to hear what’s going on in the world and what the youngsters are doing. Michael: (Hahaha) That’s so funny but true. Gary: Ann, it’s been so amazing chatting with you, we could talk for hours! I’d like to end with this – What would like to see for the future of British hairdressing? Ann: It’s very simple – I’d like salon owners to get their teams involved with what’s going on in hairdressing. Become a member of The Fellowship, you’ll meet
What can we say about the wonderful Ann – she is one inspirational lady, loved and respected by many. With so much to talk about, it’s impossible to try and fit everything into these pages, and we can only hope that reading this inspires you to push yourself to be amazing. Ann has the determination and drive rarely seen in people these days, and at 95 she is simply incredible. We salute you, Ann Herman. Gary & Michael xx

DISCUSSIONS WITH... WE CAUGHT UP WITH THE AMAZING DARREN WEBSTER TO FIND OUT ALL ABOUT THE CAREER HE’S CARVED OUT FOR HIMSELF. Award-winning London session hairdresser Darren Webster is as passionate for his profession and the hairdressing sector as he was when he started over 30 years ago. Having started in Leeds before making the move to London, Darren has experienced the whole spectrum of the industry. From the salon floor to TV shows, hosting workshops at trade events to working with leading brands, he’s racked up an enviable list of achievements and a legacy to be celebrated. You’ve enjoyed a long and successful career… where did it all start? My career started when I was just 14 years old when I worked at a friend’s salon a few evenings a week. I then left school and started my hairdressing training in Leeds city centre. I soon realised that doing hair was not always about being behind the chair, although I still love being on the salon floor to this day. I aspired to work on photo shoots, TV and shows so I researched and found that if it was to happen I would be best to move to London. I worked hard in salon management and salon training and came across a great opportunity to be based in Mayfair and work with an amazing salon brand. I quickly joined their Artistic Team and that involved lots of travel alongside building my West End clientele.
From the salon floor, you’ve also done lots in the wider industry at trade events, on TV, can you talk us through some of that? During that nine year period I would do test shoots to meet photographers, make up artists and clothes stylists. I became a regular to work on Top Of The Pops and lots of other music TV shows and live events. But when the Internet took hold, music began to be streamed through this medium and those music shows stopped being aired. That’s when I decided to open my own business. I owned a successful Mayfair salon in the heart of the West End for 15 years. I also used all my experience to enter the British Hairdressing Awards to promote my business and expand education. You must have some amazing highlights? I feel so lucky and grateful for my career, there are so many highlights. I remember being in LA at a global event doing hair for members of the press in my hotel suite then flying the next day to Prague to work on a major TV advertising campaign. Straight after that, I was looking after Celine Dion for her London show. What a week! What do you think has set you apart from the rest, to be asked to create hair at these events? I am not sure what sets me apart to be asked to create hair on all these events. Maybe, right time, right place? I adore meeting people and love learning from new experiences. The truth is, it never feels like work.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Look for the positivity in every situation and never stop. Name one thing you’ve learned the hard way? Now this is the question! Research and preparation are always key.

PEOPLE
Favourite tool? The BaByliss PRO Cordless Super Motor Clipper. I use it on most clients and take it everywhere. Best location you’ve ever styled hair at? The studio at Electric Space. The energy in the Georgian town house is the best. Such great history, a great vibe.
How has the industry changed since you started in hair, and how has this changed you? The hair industry has changed hugely and still continues to. When I had my salon it was so much easier to make good money. Unfortunately, the price per unit has not changed in comparison to rent and rates in London and this means margins are compromised. Since closing my business I have become independent. I struggled at first thinking I had lost my status as a successful Mayfair salon owner but I took a step back, grounded myself and soon realised I had created my own brand. I had created more time to spend on what I really love and feel passionate about. This means being able to continue being a Brand Ambassador for BaByliss PRO and Electric products, doing more session work and looking after my West End clientele, which is still very important to me.
Where does BaByliss PRO come into your work? BaByliss PRO plays a huge part in my work. I cannot do what I do without using their amazing products. The BaByliss family are always innovative, forward thinking and are always an incredible support. I was first connected with them through a few press event and worked with them on electrical conferences, I never looked back.
Favourite drink at the bar? A crafted IPA. One hair Instagram account everyone should be following? It is law to follow @BabylissPROUK on Instagram.
Any advice for other hairdressers looking to carve out a career like yours? The advice I would give to anyone who wants to carve out a career like my journey is, never stop learning. The knowledge of your craft will eliminate any fear. Always be true to yourself and show authenticity. Enjoy the journey, even through the tough times, great things will show. Darren’s latest collection is featured exclusively in this issue of Professional Hairdresser, turn to page 46 to see his amazing work.

The celebrity hairstyle culture has always been like an obsession – think ‘the Rachel’, the ‘Pob’ or back to the Supermodels of the 80s when everyone wanted hair like Cindy, Claudia or Linda! Now with social media fuelling our celebrity fixation and bombarding us with their latest looks, love it or hate it you cannot deny that celebrities do have a great influence on hair fashion. With clients coming into your salon wanting to switch things up, many will be armed with screenshots on their phone and keen to share with you the celebrity look that has inspired them to sit in your chair and ask you to work your magic. So, we posed the question – what celebrity hair transformations have been inspiring your clients during 2021?
Jlo’s textural bob looked amazing! She just can’t do anything wrong. Her hair always looks amazing. The length and texture here is just pure perfection, it complements her bone structure and her colour enhances her skin tone and complexion. Although this is a wig, her bronze blonde is probably one of the most sought after hair colours these days; commercial and also commitment free. Ideal for my beautiful guests. José Albaladejo, HARE & BONE
MAKE ME LOOK LIKE... b4
The shag has seen a massive revival this year and celebs such as Billie Eilish, Alexa Chung and Miley Cyrus have been hugely influential in bringing this classic 70s cut back! It’s such a versatile and effortless haircut as it looks great on all hair lengths and textures. I’ve loved creating some gorgeous curly shags on clients, which have been full of texture and natural movement. Robert Eaton, Russell Eaton Salons
In the months following Billie’s transformation from a black and green alternative style to a more commercial bleach blonde shag I had so many clients coming in with her photo as their inspiration. Although Billie’s style has been influential for the past few years her previous look may have been a bit too daring for the average client. Her new look is much more wearable just with an edgy twist it seems to be exactly what my clients are after, it means they can retain the length of their hair whilst still feeling like they’re having a big change with the introduction of a fringe and more layers. Annabel Payne, TONI&GUY, Salisbury.

The most influential look of the year that we have been seeing in the salon has to be Taylor Lashae’s French bob. It’s such a beautiful and versatile cut as it works in so many ways - with or without a fringe, jaw length, just under jaw length or lip length, and is suitable for all hair types. It’s truly effortless and is the new ‘cool girl’ look! Melissa Timperley, Melissa Timperley Manchester
b4
The Kardashians are incredibly influential when it comes to their look and Kourtney Kardashian’s lob was just one of the Kardashian looks that we loved this year and that had many clients coming into the salon wanting to copy the look. With everyone knowing Kourtney for her long, luscious locks, this was such a big change for the star but one that looked incredibly chic and allowed her facial features to really pop, which was a huge attraction for clients. Many of us had also became bored of our longer hair in lockdown and were interested in trying out shorter styles to change up our look and the lob haircut is a perfect choice, as it allows clients to take their length a little bit shorter without going too short if they were to opt for a bob or a more cropped hairstyle. Kourtney also showcased this look in a number of ways on her Instagram, wearing the style wavy and voluminous, sleek and straight and worn wet in appearance, which allowed clients to see how versatile this look is and how it can look incredible styled in a number of different ways. Curtain bangs, big curls and 70s inspired bouncy hair have been so popular with clients this year, and that’s all down to the influence of TikTok tutorials, and viral videos featuring looks inspired by Farrah Fawcett, ABBA and Brigitte Bardot. Curtain bangs have been a dream for me as a stylist, as they’re so gorgeous and suit everyone! Christopher Laird, November Collective

Billie Eilish’s colour transformation was without a doubt the biggest wow of the year! Her Instagram image went viral in a matters of minutes and the hairdressing world became obsessed over how she went from the green and black to blonde. TikTok was inundated with videos showing the steps her colourist had to go through. Her new look is iconic and shows another side of Billie’s personality! José Albaladejo, HARE & BONE
Maya Jama has been huge this year, with major TV appearances, flawless red carpet appearances and loads of gorgeous hair looks. She absolutely inspires our clients with her cool, London-girl take on glam and transformations from curly to straight and everything in between. We applied Maya’s Gold Class extensions, using 50cm in a bespoke texture to blend perfectly with her natural hair. For us, hair extensions have always been an essential part of transformations – allowing clients to change up their look and add additional length, volume or even colour with a healthy finish. Another huge inspiration this year has been Alex Scott MBE, who was so amazing during the Olympics and summer of sport. She’s a fantastic role model and another Gold Class extensions client – demonstrating perfectly that sport coverage has never been so stylish and the versatility of extensions to boot. Red has been red hot at TH1 Hair in recent months, inspired firstly by Dua Lipa’s strawberry-hued hair back in September, and most recently, Gigi Hadid’s dazzling shade of auburn for the Met Gala. Red is always a winner – especially for the autumn/winter months; its fiery connotations are a perfect match to the season of log fires and autumn leaves, however the beauty of this shade is that it can transform any style, adding some serious ‘wow’ along the way. Both Dua Lipa and Gigi are of course leaders when it comes to switching up their style, but the reason this look has been so popular with our clients is that this is what I call ‘real red’; it’s a deeper shade than a copper red, but lighter than auburn. Clients with a warmer skin tone will suit reds in more cinnamon, copper and ruby tones, while clients with cooler skin tones will suit berry, burgundy and crimson tones more. As a rule I say the darker the skin the deeper the shade, and the lighter the skin the softer, more sheer the shade. This global burnt copper hue from my Craft collection above, is, for me, the perfect complement to the celebrity requests we have in-salon: rich, deep and luxurious, it screams autumn/winter, and can be tailor-made to suit the needs of each client, allowing you to make it as muted or intense as their new season heart’s desire. We have also been recreating perfect autumn hues in line with our celebrity requests in salon, as pictured on our Insta page below, too. Thomas Hills, Director, TH1 Hair
I definitely think Miley’s mullet has been one of the most influential looks of 2021. Although in 2020 Miley sported longer mullet styles, we noticed Miley going even shorter with her layers and sporting her shortest mullet to date in 2021, which suits her style perfectly and gives her a very edgy, rock chic vibe. After a couple of tough years due to the pandemic, 2021 has definitely been the year for clients to be more experimental with their hair looks and the year for clients to try out styles like this that they may have usually not gone for and 80’s styles like the mullet have been a huge trend this year that clients have loved experimenting with. Miley’s look was showcased all over Instagram and was hugely discussed across other social
media platforms and consumer magazines. Even clients who haven’t wanted to go as short in length as Miley have brought in images of Miley’s cut looking to replicate the texture with added choppy layers or have wanted to incorporate her textured fringe into their current hair look to give it a more grungy vibe. Some of our clients at Rainbow Room International have also taken this trend one step further, being incredibly daring and teaming the style with bold and bright hair colours that really make a statement. COLOUR
2021’s Defining Colour Trends Rainbow Room International Artistic Director and Schwarzkopf UK Ambassador Suzie McGill reviews this year’s top colour trends and how they influenced clients’ colour choices. In Shutterstock’s annual Colour Trends report, they identify the colours that have increased in activity throughout the year looking at HEX code data in each pixel and are therefore able to establish three of the defining colour trends of 2021: Set Sail Champagne, Fortuna Gold and Tidewater Green. In this piece, Suzie discusses these colour trends in relation to hair and gives her tips to recommend to clients when opting for these hair shades in the salon…
Fortuna Gold A warm, deep, golden hue, this shade is definitely not for the faint hearted and is for clients who want their hair to stand out from the crowd. This tone mimics a dark, rich shade of yellow and has an almost metallic sheen to create a statement gold finish. This hair colour is a good choice for blondes who want to change up their look and opt for something more adventurous or for brunettes, this hair colour looks beautiful incorporated into balayage to give hair a golden, sun kissed shimmer, as well as depth and dimension. I always recommend that clients use regular hair masks, as well as serums and shine sprays to keep their gold hair looking lustrous and as mesmerising as possible.
Tidewater Green Resembling the sea, Tidewater Green is a mix of both green and blue tones to create a gorgeous deep and rich teal shade. This is another vivid hair colour look but a perfect choice for those who want to be more creative with their hair colour. I love this colour teamed with a pixie crop or instead of worn all over the hair, incorporated into colour flashes to inject some fun into client’s hair. This hair colour is also a great option for brunettes who don’t want to opt for a colour that’s too bright in appearance, as the tone has a darker, almost grey tone, which allows it to appear more subtle. With this hair colour the client’s hair will likely need to be pre-lightened prior to applying the teal colour, therefore haircare at home is key. Clients should use good colour saving shampoos, conditioners and hair masks to keep hair looking its best and in a good condition, as well as to keep the colour long-lasting and to avoid it from fading.
Set Sail Champagne Think nude, creamy blonde. Set Sail Champagne is a stunning natural, yet luxurious blonde hue that gives the hair a gorgeous glow but is without any signs of brassiness! This soft blonde is perfect for those who don’t want their hair to resemble that of a platinum hue and want something more subtle yet still beautifully striking. When creating this shade for clients in the salon, I always use Schwarzkopf Fibreplex to maintain hair strength and integrity, as this colour looks its best when healthy and full of shine to give it the champagne luminosity. Babylights are my favourite colour technique to use to achieve this look, allowing me to create natural tones within the hair before toning with a cool/nude hued toner to finish off the colour perfectly and provide it with further shine.

TRACEY DEVINE SMITH, ASP GLOBAL AMBASSADOR, TALKS US THROUGH THE NEW ASP LUXURY HAIRCARE TREND EDIT COLLECTION CREATED TO GET YOUR COLOUR JUICES FLOWING THIS SEASON WITH THREE BOLD NEW LOOKS: DARK SAPPHIRE, TWO TONE AND PLATINUM RETRO.
Platinum Retro Platinum Retro, focuses on the art of bleaching perfectly. This whiter than white blonde is the secret to expensive looking and perfectly toned hair. Products used include Bleach, Anti-Yellow Toner and Dynamics.
“Platinum Retro is the ultimate blonde, showcasing bleach work at its finest. This cool 70s/80s hair is for your clients who want a real fashion statement, focusing on soft hues of toner work. This was inspired by the rise in bleach work in the salon and the need for bleach education – helping remove the fear out of this type of work. This trend works best on fair skin tones and compliments green and blue eyes. If your client asks for this look, I recommend advising them to go all out – get the shag cut with the colour.”

Two Tone Two-Tone has been one of the killer trends for 2021 and is here to stay but with a new lease of life for 2022. A favourite with celebrities it encourages clients to ask for the same. In this look the hair is divided completely into two colours, whether it is top and bottom, side to side or front and back. This trend is suited to all, dark, light and bright tones. It can be as out there, or diluted, as desired. Products used include the Two-Tone: 9 level lift bleach, Dynamics, Toners, Mode styling and Vitaplex.
“The Two-Tone trend is not for the faint hearted! It’s an awesome 90s feel and suits any length of hair, where panels and areas give ‘pops’ of colour in strong lines. This look is beautiful on a precision bob or where longer hair is split into two tones. It can be extremely wearable but for this shoot we chose to go all out so that you can see the look at its hottest! It’s a youth inspired trend seen more on street style fashion with a sports luxe feel.”
Dark Sapphire Dark Sapphire consists of dark earthy tones, focusing on natural curl, texture and movement. A placement technique is used to achieve this look, adding hidden ‘pops’ of lavender and sapphire – ultimately resulting in a beautiful ‘tie dye effect.’ Products used include ASP Dark Infiniti, with a strong focus on No. 7 from the Infiniti permanent Colour range, Dynamics and Hotshots for shine.
“Commercial wearable texture is every girl’s dream... when your clients have natural curls it’s essential to maintain them with the correct care and style. This 70s inspired trend is really simple and is all about that gorgeous take on natural curls and enhancing colour and tone. This trend is best suited for those with a more olive complexion and naturally darker toned hair. Dark Sapphire is hot off the catwalk and it’s a trend that all of your clients will lust after.” For more information please visit:

AS ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED NAMES IN THE HAIRDRESSING WORLD, PHIL SMITH HAS BUILT SALON EMPIRES, LAUNCHED MULTI-MILLION SELLING HAIRCARE RANGES AND WON COUNTLESS AWARDS FOR HIS BUSINESS ACUMEN. HERE, HE TACKLES YOUR TRICKY POST-PANDEMIC BUSINESS ISSUES...
Fit for business “My salon has a decent reputation in the local area and during the Pandemic I had our website upgraded. I’m wondering whether it’s worth paying a local PR agency to give things a push. Do you think this is a necessary expense or would my money be better spent elsewhere?”
PHIL SAYS: I’d be the first to admit that good PR has been the key to my career success. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the connections, media opportunities and brand management that a reputable PR agency can deliver. The trouble is that PR can be quite misunderstood. Some people think that it is just about getting your hair pictures published or your name in a magazine. To me, PR should drive awareness to your business and make sure you’re on the radar of all the right people. Whether that’s on a local level making sure you’re thought of as THE best salon in town – or on a bigger scale establishing you as one of the leading hairdressing talents in the country, PR is a pathway to getting your name and your salon seen and heard. Without a doubt though, the PR landscape has changed since I started out. There was no social media 30 years ago and no one could have imagined we’d all be building our own websites and booking appointments online. Social media, in particular, has given everyone an opportunity to boost your salon’s profile in a direct and easy way. When done well, social media is a behind the scenes glimpse at your salon and showcases what you do best. Before you allocate budget to PR, I’d make sure your social media – which, let’s face it, is a free resource – is up to scratch. Get your team on board with taking shots around the salon and making your social feed lively and engaging with video clips and original content. One important thing to remember about PR is that is that it starts with you. Building a positive reputation for your salon is about what you say, what you do, and what other people say about you. Don’t underestimate the importance of delivering top quality customer service and improving every detail of the business regularly. At its most fundamental level, PR is word of mouth and someone leaving you a top review. You say you invested in your website last year and that’s great. Our online presence has become as important as our shopfront in terms of image and making a good first impression. Your website is an opportunity to give a flavour of what your client can expect when they visit. Hopefully your
website upgrade included all the relevant Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) work to get your salon seen by anyone searching for a hair service in your area. It sounds to me like you’ve done the groundwork to establish your brand. Really the next logical step is to employ a PR to put together an overarching plan that will build your reputation in the long-term. At this stage it’s worth stopping to think what your ambitions really are. Do you want to become a brand ambassador (or even launch your own product range), or do you need some direction on what it takes to win those coveted industry awards? Everyone will have a different goal and a smart PR will know which pathway to steer you on. I employed Julie Bellinger at Gorgeous PR as my very first PR almost 20 years. She helped me get my first nomination for British Hairdresser of the Year and arguably set me on my way to launching my own product range. What was clever is the way that she defined who I was and made me consider the kind of brand I would become. I was never a glossy Mayfair hairdresser – or, to put it another way I wasn’t what Gordon Ramsay was to the restaurant world. Instead, she saw me as more of a ‘Jamie Oliver of hairdressing’; still respected, but at the same time reachable and affordable to all walks of life. Knowing who I was and where I fit into the hairdressing landscape has helped me hugely. I still refer back to those principles today. I guess it’s clear to see that I’m a fan of PR. When done well it’s the difference between make or break. However, before you get going, you must think through your budget. While measuring the success of PR is not always immediately obvious, an effective campaign should translate to extra clients through your door or the confidence to put your prices up. Go to an agency that understands the hair business specifically – there’s no point going to someone general who lacks the contacts to get you places. Perhaps research someone in the business you admire and see who they’re represented by. Good luck with getting your PR campaign started. If you ask me, the right PR will always pay off.

BUSINESS
COLIN McANDREW IS THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF MEDUSA. AS SCOTLAND’S FASTEST GROWING SALON GROUP, COLIN IS ON COURSE TO GROW THE BRAND AND EN ROUTE IS SHARING HIS EXPERIENCE ON HOW BEST TO GO ABOUT THAT.
The Master Builder Why branding is more important than ever and how to build a cohesive brand today. Let’s begin by confirming exactly what a brand is. A brand is more than your salon logo. It is everything that embodies your business. It is everything, physically and digitally, that comes into contact with your clients, and potential clients. It is everything your business does, and every member of your team represents your brand. Obvious branding elements of your business include the shop front, the website, the interiors and marketing assets such as price lists, newsletters and business cards. Less obvious elements are atmosphere, quality and team spirit. We will look at some of these in a little more detail later on but for now let’s think about your brand values. These are the beating heart of your business and shape every aspect; everything you do, say and create must come from here. So what are the values of your brand? Calm, enjoyment, grace, hard-work, precision, quality, sharing? In order to stand out in a crowded market place it is key that your brand values underpin everything you do. When I first started working at Medusa in 1995, my role was to define the brand. Edinburgh has a wealth of great hairdressing businesses and my job was to uncover and cement the brand values within the business. Building brand values in an already established business is much harder than setting them out from the beginning. However, with hard work and lots of team communication, I uncovered the values behind the Medusa brand. These were integrity, consistency, boldness and fairness. From this point, I looked at every aspect of the business in depth to confirm if the brand values were reflective. Systems for training, cutting, colour and consultations were put in place with our brand values clearly running throughout and then communicated to the team. For the first time, they began working with the same focus and clients began experiencing a cohesive ‘Medusa’ brand. When values are clear and systems are in place, atmosphere improves and team spirit becomes stronger. This ripples out to clients and everyone begins to feel part of the brand. Taking your team on this journey is a good starting point as the impact is relatively quick and cost effective. Once you start to see the financial impact, then invest in other elements
of the brand that need to reflect the values. Does your product manufacturer represent the same or similar values? Is your website and social media reflecting your values? Is the interior, exterior and logo in line with what your brand stands for? Does your marketing embody your brand identity? In 2012 Medusa underwent a rebrand. Our values haven’t changed but they now include diversity and authenticity. I had owned the business for six years by this point and used the opportunity to look at how our brand values were externally communicated – how did those outside the business view us, and how did we want to be viewed. Again the team were involved in the process and the brand developed, and together we launched with a new logo, website and new standards . This streamlined the brand and set us apart from the competition. During lockdown I managed to take our branding to a level I never thought possible and refurbished all six of the salons at once. A cohesive brand increases client experience and loyalty. A client that visits our Raeburn Place salon will now instantly recognise any of the other five salons, and feel confident that they will receive the same high level experience in any of those. It has taken me over 25 years to pull together the full Medusa brand, and along the way I have worked on projects with experts to guide me. I am confident in my and the team’s ability to guarantee the brand experience within the salon but have worked with web designers, graphic designers, interior designers and marketing professionals to ensure that what is viewed out of the bricks and mortar continues to reflect our values. Branding is more crucial than ever before. Consumers are nervous and there is increased noise in our everyday life. A strong brand cuts through the noise, speaks directly to the client and offers direction and motivation for the team. Working together to understand the brands values will always result in a positive outcome for your business. And finally, an important point to note is that once you have uncovered or set your brand values, building the brand will be easier. Like I said, your brand values are the beating heart of your business. They will flow through the brand and as long as you look after them an established salon brand should required little maintenance to stay healthy and strong.

WITH THE NUMBER OF FREELANCERS AND SELF-EMPLOYED HAIRSTYLISTS ON THE RISE, THE TRADITIONAL SALON MODEL MIGHT BE SEEN TO BE ON ITS WAY OUT – BUT FOR MELISSA TIMPERLEY, WHOSE EPONYMOUS SALON IS IN THE HEART OF MANCHESTER, AN EMPLOYED TEAM IS AN ENGAGED TEAM – AND AN AWARD-WINNING, HAPPY ONE AT THAT. THE PROOF IS IN THE PUDDING – MELISSA HAS JUST WON ‘SALON TEAM OF THE YEAR’ AT THE BRITISH HAIRDRESSING BUSINESS AWARDS 2021.
Employment benefits “All of my staff are employed,” says Melissa. “I want everyone to feel like they’re included in the business, and that we’re all part of the same family.” In a world where everyone can be out for themselves, a close team also makes for a warm and welcoming working environment. “Having a unified team means there’s always a strong support network on hand,” continues Melissa. “We are able to mentor and inspire each other, and share problems and solutions. Everyone is on the same side, which makes you feel safe and valued. We all genuinely want the best for, and care for each other.” By creating an employed team, Melissa is also able to offer her stylists benefits, and is mindful of creating a great work/life balance. “If you’re self-employed, you can choose your own hours,” she explains. “So I wanted to make sure I was offering something similar. Everyone gets a Saturday off every few weeks, so they don’t have to use up their holiday time to enjoy a nice, normal weekend. For most hairdressers, it’s just four Saturdays a year. There’s also the security of maternity pay and sick pay, and the obvious benefits during COVID lockdowns. Everyone is paid a good salary too, because I know that hairdressing is a skill and one that isn’t always fairly financially remunerated.” As well as creating a cohesive and close-knit team, being employed has business benefits for Melissa when it comes to that classic salon sticking point: retail. “As the salon owner, I’ve spent time and effort researching a product line,” she says. “Because the team is employed, they use the products I’ve chosen and I really like that quality control and cohesion in the salon. We have achievable targets and provide ongoing training for everyone, so they really believe in the products too.” As well as being employed, Melissa’s team enjoys the benefits of a relaxing, peaceful salon environment thanks to her ‘one client, one team member’ approach. “Staff do everything for their client; there’s no swapping between people for colour, washing, blow-drying… It’s a real personal touch for the client, but for the team it means they’re not rushed off their feet. They have balance, can devote their time and energy to one client, and they can enjoy some downtime while a colour is processing. They might only see two or three clients in a day, but they’re fully booked. It’s a really nice atmosphere for everyone.” Unsurprisingly, this team-first approach means Melissa hasn’t faced any struggle to recruit and maintain staff. “We don’t struggle with employment,” she says. “If anything, it’s usually us turning people away! I want people to fit into our family, because there’s no bitchiness on the team and everyone is genuinely really lovely. I’ve taken time to build it up carefully; it was just me to start with and now, five years later there are 12 of us.”

BUSINESS
AS WELL AS THE HUGELY IMPORTANT GREEN ADVANTAGE, WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN THAT SWITCHING FROM COTTON TOWELS, GOWNS AND TRADITIONAL LAUNDRY CAN GIVE YOU TIME-SAVINGS AND SPACE-SAVINGS IN SALON BUT WHAT ELSE CAN IT DO FOR YOUR BUSINESS? ANNE BUTTERLY OF EASYDRY REVEALS MORE…
Disposable incoming... Salons that have switched to disposable towels can expect to see savings in their energy bill and in their water bill, which with the threat of rising utilitiy bills looming, is of huge importance to salons. Using just one box of 900 Easydry Hair Towels for example can give the following savings: 356 kWh in your energy usage saved 4428L of water saved 1800 hours of staff time saved
•• •
Even better, with towels and gowns that are 100% compostable you can have the convenience of a disposable product without worrying about the environment. This is a great message to promote to your team and your clients. We recently won the ‘Green Technology of the Year’ Award at the Annual Green Awards. This recognised the innovative technology inovlved in creating each Easydry towel that performs incredibly well, while still maintaining the highest hygiene and environmental standards. Each one of our towel’s lifetime environmental impact is less that that caused by laundering just one cotton towel, once! For salons that are concerned about hygiene switching to eco-towels is the answer. Multi-user cotton towels can be a playground for germs and bacteria. The ridges and grooves in cotton towels, are a perfect breeding ground for germs and bacteria – especially in a warm, damp, salon environment. If cotton towels are not washed at a sufficiently high temperature, germs and bacteria can remain. Our towels, for example, are produced using medical-grade fibres in a clean room environment to guarantee a fresh, clean, hygienic towel for every client, every time. Eliminating laundry and bulky, stained cotton towels, and reusable gowns means you would no longer need a washing machine, tumble dryer and storage space for cotton towels and gowns. Your laundry room could be converted into another styling station, a beauty room or a room for staff training or a retail area. An average salon should make between 15-30% of their revenue through retail sales. Imagine how much you could achieve if you could convert your laundry room into a larger retail area! So how else can a move to eco-friendly towels help? Have you had problems recruiting staff? Industy experts across the UK and Ireland have been concerned about salons experiencing staff shortages for a number of months. Salons that are already struggling with restrictions due to COVID now find that when they can re-open and and begin to get back to
normal, staff are no longer available. This problem exists not only at salons, it is also happening at the apprentice level. So what can salons do? You may be shocked to learn that the average stylist/junior/apprentice may waste thousands of hours per year on laundry alone. This is an incredible statistic! However, when you consider just how much work is involved in laundry in salons – it makes complete sense. Laundering cotton towels in a busy salon involves: collecting the towels, running a wash cycle (at high temperatures as a COVID precaution), running a tumble-dry cycle, folding and re-distributing towels around the salon. In busy salons, this cycle of work can be repeated 10-15 times per day. Imagine if you could completely eliminate laundry in the salon and turn that valuable staff time into time spent working on salon clients or receiving training. Salons that use disposable towels and disposable gowns can give staff more training and more time with clients. This is where your staff should be spending their time, not being stuck in the laundry room for hours. Industry guru on all things sustainable, Anne Veck of Anne Veck Salons has long been a fan of the disposable towel. “Easydry towels make my life so much easier as a salon owner. They cut down completely on staff time for laundry. We don’t have washing machines and tumble dryers running all day long. I’ve got my staff on the salon floor, working instead of folding towels and it creates a really good talking point in the salon with the clients. I absolutely love them.” And she is not the only salon owner who has seen the many benefits of embracing disposable towels. Jamie Stevens of Jamie Stevens Hair has found similar benefits with staff time being redeployed on training and working on clients. He said: “I’m not paying my assistants to make sure that the tumble dryer is running, the towels are dry etc. It enables them to actually do their job properly. And it enables me to have more time to educate them.” Watch the Easydry animation “Salon Hygiene” CLICK HERE TO WATCH THIS VIDEO OR GO TO WWW.RDR.LINK/HF023

BARRIE STEPHEN ON RAISING THE STANDARD OF STAFF RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION IN HAIR SALONS
Staying Power A salon’s growth, stability and profitability depends heavily on a strong and committed team, and their performance is key to its success. As salon owners rebuild their businesses following the impact of lockdown, maintaining a dedicated team will be paramount to their survival. Barrie Stephen of Barrie Stephen Hair shares his survival guide tactics which involve the ‘7 Rs’. So how can businesses ensure that their stylists are committed in the long term and avoid a ‘grasshopper’ culture where neither the stylist nor salon owner feels satisfied? And what proactive steps should salons be taking in order to find and keep talented staff? With more than three decades of experience in the industry and the owner of four salons in Leicestershire, Barrie Stephen believes that salons should not only prioritise recruitment and staff retention but look to raise the standard of these practices to promote professionalism within the sector. The latest statistics from the National Hair and Beauty Federation show that the number of people starting hairdressing apprenticeships in England had halved between 2016 and 2020, with another predicted drop of 30% to 50% this year. With the very real threat of fewer people choosing hairdressing as a career, the reality is that salon owners are left fishing from a much smaller pond, which drives competitiveness and sometimes unethical behaviour. Barrie believes that all salons should be singing from the same hymn sheet, working together to create a healthy pipeline of quality stylists. It’s not to say that stylists won’t move from one salon to another in the same town or city, but if there is mutual respect between businesses then detailed references, honest employee reviews and upholding contracts will be as standard and support all salons to better recruit for their business’ needs. Barrie explains, “It is important to have a strong, united culture and welcome stylists that are looking for a challenge and new opportunities. This is great and we absolutely support ambition and drive. However, there seems to have been a shift in how stylists feel they should progress, and more importantly, how quickly. This pursuit of instant gratification can often lead to a culture of hopping salons, which leaves businesses desperate and recruiting without real consideration, and therefore the cycle continues. Barrie says that finding employees that fit your business is not always an easy road. It is a process that must be taken seriously by you and the stylist and one that should be reviewed and adapted as your business grows. “It all starts with thinking will they fit in our culture? Without that they might not have the drive and passion to deliver the standard of hairdressing that the company stands for. Of course, potential employees are assessed through a formal trade test to check the quality of their work, but after
The 7Rs If salons are struggling to retain employees, Barrie offers a few key points to mitigate the risk of hiring unsuitable candidates or loosing good talent. Re-evaluation: Is it you or me? Think about what is going wrong and honestly reflect on whether it is the stylist or the business practice. Review: What does your team look like and is it serving your business and clients in terms of talent and commercial balance. Think about the type of stylists that are the right fit for your salon. Risk analysis: Do as much work as you can to research the professional history of your candidates. Work to build that mutual respect with other salons to enable you to have open and honest conversations about potential employees. Recognise: Consider using a number of tools to assess the suitability of a candidate, through trade tests and personality assessments to determine best fit. Recruit: Having a robust on-boarding process in place will help new hires feel more valued, better understand their role, and increase their productivity and performance, resulting in increased engagement. Reflection: Implement regular reviews and check-ins to speak honestly about any areas that may be an issue for you or the stylist, while also using this time to recognise and reward hard work and commitment. Retention: You should be offering a varied programme of support, opportunities, education and rewards and retention schemes.

BUSINESS
many years in the game, we simply know who will work well as part of our team and who won’t. It takes time to get to this point, but it pays dividends when you do. “Within two weeks we usually know if a stylist will stay in the business for five years, with the addition of once a stylist stays for five years, they often stay for a lifetime. We annually review the balance of service, the clients, team and the business to make sure we are recruiting for what we need.” Barrie believes that finding stylists with staying power is as much the salon’s responsibility as it is the hairdresser. Across his salon group, Barrie has a healthy 75-80% staff retention percentage, employing more than 50 stylists, of which some have been with the business for more than 20 years. Each of Barrie’s salons has its own unique character, from the vibrant city centre to the rural village setting. This enables Barrie to match team members to the environment that suits them and the way they work. “We have a long-term retention and recognition programme, which includes flexible working that is dictated by the clients. For instance, successful stylists can work whatever hours they want if they are fully booked. We provide an excellent programme of education, using internal educators and external courses, our stylists also have the opportunity to get involved in hair outside the salon, becoming members of talent teams and working at shows like London Fashion Week. We have a 100k club too, which rewards stylists with an additional week’s holiday on top of their entitled holiday leave when they turn over this amount. “We make sure that individual people have choices. We know that now more than ever, people are looking for
flexibility. It’s a lifestyle choice and some stylists either choose money or time. We as a business are paying stylists for their time and skills and if a stylist wants more of their own time, then they as a result reduce their money and that is the commercial balance. Our regular one to ones between employer and employee provide a great opportunity to make sure we are meeting the individual needs of our stylists and keeps the lines of communication open. “It is important that the flexibility includes the chance for their commercial focus to change, based upon their personal circumstances at that time. We also look at the ambitions and needs of each stylist, identifying the go getters who want to make a name for themselves in the wider industry, while recognising the consistent stylists that provide the bread-and-butter service day to day. It’s about creating the right mix of talent so that our business and clients are catered for, and our stylists are happy and productive in however they choose to work.” A final thought from Barrie is about efficiency and professionalism, bringing salons up to date and in line with the fast pace of the industry. Gone are the days of spreadsheets, time sheets and bits of paper for holiday requests. Investing in systems that help you to manage the HR side of the business is a real benefit when keeping your team happy and you in control. Barrie adds, “We’ve invested in some great HR software that allows our team to jump on an app to request holidays, engage in training, keep up to date with targets, commission and keep on track with their salary, contracts of employment, policies and personal development programmes. It’s time to wake up, shake up and re-shape our professional approach.”

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR NEW WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR SALON TURNOVER? ADDING A SPECIALIST SERVICE TO YOUR SALON MENU CAN ATTRACT A WHOLE NEW CLIENT BASE, BRINGING WITH IT COUNTLESS BENEFITS FOR YOUR BUSINESS. WE SPOKE TO GREAT LENGTHS, ONE OF THE WORLD’S LEADING PROFESSIONAL HAIR EXTENSIONS SUPPLIERS ABOUT HOW TO MAKE EXTENSIONS WORK FOR YOUR SALON…
1
Looking at lengths
Change your pre-conceptions about extensions Think the market for extensions is too niche? Think again. So many of us have pre-conceived ideas about a ‘typical’ extensions client but this is simply not the case according to Beverley Rosser from Rosser Hairdressing in Liverpool, who recalls how she made her extensions business a success. ‘I wanted to show how versatile they could be for clients of any age and with any type of hair, and what you could achieve by using them… Not all of our clients are 18 with a full head of 22” extensions – we have people with hair loss, stress-related hair loss, alopecia… they’re things that people don’t talk about, but which you see daily in the salon. Identifying the problems which we could solve opened a lot of doors for us.’ Jennifer Swain from Swain Hairdressing in Cumbria agrees: ‘We’re proud to do different and diverse types of hair, and we showcase that online. We do clients with medical hair loss, people who are looking for extensions after chemo – it’s really rewarding, and it’s helpful to show people you offer these kinds of extensions too.’
2 3
Attract clients from further away ‘We have a good reputation in the area so people expect a certain standard’ says Jennifer Swain. ‘This quality and consistency of service, level of work and care means clients feel we’re good value – and if you do one client well, they will tell their friends. I firmly believe that if you’re good at something, people will come to you. We have clients that travel from London, Manchester and all across the North West because of our quality of service.’ Use consultations to your advantage ‘One of my biggest fears when I started out was that people wouldn’t understand why Great Lengths extensions cost more than other brands’ says Christina Reilly, Christina Reilly Hair Make-up & Beauty, Glasgow. ‘Consultations helped play a massive part in this – they gave me time to explain the benefits and to let clients see the difference in the quality of the hair. Fortunately, they quickly understood that they get ten times the quality and the hair lasts twice as long – I always say if you buy cheap, you buy twice and most of my clients were happy to switch over because of this.’
4
Offer finance options Extensions are a premium product and can be expensive, so offering to spread that cost can be a deciding factor for the client. ‘Everything is financed now – your phone, your car – so why not your hair?’ says James Henderson of M Hair Extensions in Nottingham. ‘We offer a 0% finance plan and it’s worked really well for me…register with a reputable finance company and go through the FCA. We pay the finance company a commission and the client gets to pay the total bill back over six months with a 10% deposit and it works really well. We get clients coming in off the back of that and even if they end up not taking the finance option for whatever reason, they still get the extensions done. It’s great for cash flow because you get that lump sum straight away and the client pays back the finance company. You’re not waiting for six months – you’re guaranteed to get your money and it’s the finance company taking the risk.’
5
Create opportunities to keep the client returning ‘It’s all about building that rapport with the client – don’t just do their hair once and wave them out the door, you want to create opportunities to keep them coming back into your salon’ says James Henderson. James recommends including a follow-up blow-dry in the cost of the service, which invites the client back a fortnight later and provides the opportunity to raise any problems, however small, which may ruin their experience if left unaddressed. The same applies to aftercare. All of James’ extension services include removal – this not only gets the client back into the salon but it also ensures the extensions are removed correctly and gives you the opportunity to get them rebooked. There’s also a strong retail opportunity, says Beverley Rosser. ‘If someone comes to the salon and has extensions fitted, I won’t let them leave without a maintenance pack or the right brush to use on their hair. It’s only going to cause me problems down the line if they’ve used the wrong thing. I explain every step of the service to clients, including why using the wrong products can jeopardise their hair. You wouldn’t have a laser session on your face and expect to leave without them telling you what to use after and why it’s important. Address it in your consultation: you’re a professional and all of these steps make up the client experience.’

"The collection 'Tokyo Love Booth' was inspired by Tokyo's vibrant and uber cool fashion scene. I was fascinated by the way the new generation put themselves together and sought inspiration from their unique but super stylish aesthetic. The collection is playful and eclectic and promotes individuality. From conception, myself and photographer, Michael Young, were right on the same page and it's exactly what I envisaged it would be."

When creating this collection we took inspiration from the catwalk. We wanted the collection to have a high end, expensive and designer feel, like that of Givenchy and YSL, but we also wanted it to have a very funky and fun spirit. The collection showcases a number of hair styling and cutting looks, alongside some beautiful colour placement to enhance the finished styles.

hairdressers at
home What they’re watching, reading and doing. This month it’s multi-award winning duo Mark Leeson and Richard Darby…
The Playlist /Album We do have similar tastes in music and enjoy a real cross section of diverse genres…
The Book Mark – I like arty and renaissance period books, especially books that include imagery from my favourite artist Michael Angelo. He demonstrated a physical realism and intensity with colour which I find totally inspiring.
Mark – Kate Bush – Hounds of Love This album has one of my favourite all-time tracks ‘Running Up That Hill’. Just love Kate’s unique, haunting voice.
Richard – George Michael – Older
Richard – Reading is a luxury for me time-wise so I don’t reach for anything too heavy or demanding! I tend to grab one of James Patterson’s catalogue of crime/thriller narratives, such great storylines – I always visualise them as films. I like a book that I can pick up, read a few chapters and if I can’t return to it for a few weeks – I’m able to pick up on the storyline easily.
This is my go-to playlist when I’m on holiday and want to really chill out. It’s the album I truly switch off and fall asleep on the beach to.
The Favourite Exhibition
Podcast The Film The Richard – Switched on Pop Mark – It’s A Wonderful Life I have always been very musical and love how music envelops and A movie that really makes you think about life in general and how each person makes a difference in people’s lives. It’s a real compelling and inspiring story with great acting and script.
nurtures your soul, so this podcast is all about how a song/music can make you feel and dissects how and why rhythmic melodies get stuck in your head. There is also a website that you can actually use to search specific songs, it’s really interesting.
Mark – My favourite exhibition was actually in Hong Kong when I was invited to do a show and education seminar in front of 3,500 people as part of the huge Cosmoprof Asia. I have so many attributes and inspiration from that trip.
Richard – My favourite Richard – I can’t do this! I’m a film fan and absolutely love big blockbusters like Titanic, Star Wars, Avatar, Pearl Harbour, Memoirs of a Geisha, The Help – and The Notebook. I’m a big softy at heart!
exhibition of all time was the Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty exhibition at the V&A. His ability to capture that dark, avant-garde drama from his runway shows into an exhibition was nothing short of genius.

THE ED:IT
Errol Douglas MBE needs no introdu ction! Pro Hair was delighted to have this ‘man about town’, on our team for 2021. In his final ED:it, Errol brings us just what we need, a little ‘eye on the prize’, a smattering of ‘ones to watch’ and some very meaningful motivational tools that we can adopt as we round off the year. Follow him on Instagram: @erroldouglashair
I can’t believe I’m going to say this but I AM! Where has this year gone? Crazy or what! No sooner we were all sitting at home, at times twiddling our thumbs or going for long luxurious walks (and complaining about it) – and now full speed ahead! By far my biggest fix however is being able to go out and about and see everyone! Going to the first two industry awards of my year were phenomenal – and I’m so truly thankful to be part of this absolutely amazing, resilient industry.
Let’s hear it for my boy I love nothiing more than developing my team and was so delighted to learn of Luke Roberts finalist status in the Apprentice of the Year category at the British Hairdressing Business Awards. He didn’t win but what an honour to be cited as just one of six finalists for this monumental title. I was proud to attend the event with Luke and his parents.
GOING FOR GOLD Community is so important to me, especially now. So glorious to take part in very fabulous Belgravia In Bloom Festival! We’ve had the good fortune to work with florist Sarah Cleaver for many years – little did we know that when we agreed to host Nelly the elephant that she would claim, not only the Gold prize – but achieve worldwide recognition!
What a BEAUT... I’m blessed that I am asked to walk down many different avenues – however it has become increasingly important to me to do things that are truly good for my soul. My best gauge is if it feels like work – don’t do it! I’m fortunate however that I love practically every aspect of my working life – and continually count my blessings that I spend each day doing what I love. One such day was working on an incredible LIVE with John Lewis for a hair-related forum in association with @livingproofuk.
GREAT SPACE My hat goes off to my pal Mark Woolley for having the vision to open the incredible place which is Electric Space! Situated in fabulous Fitzrovia, the five storey town house provides an absolutely awesome creative space. A melting pot of freelance artists, photographers, educators, advertising and PR agencies can find their spot within this building whether it’s the two hairdressing salons, the men’s grooming studio, the cinema, the lounge areas or the fabulous coved photographic studio.
SHARING THE LOVE Been great to welcome a true friend Angelo Seminara into my ‘hood’. Great to catch up with this true creative at his new home at the Urban Retreat in Hans Crescent. Not every salon has its own in-house restaurant – got to say the stunning plant-based lunch at The Holy Carrot was memorable. What other industry can you sit down with like-minded individuals and share the love?
up for Remember the best way to get the best out of life is to show
it!
