Inclusivity in hairdressing is no longer a side conversation; it has become central to the industry and where we are heading next. Nowadays, technical excellence across all hair types should be non-negotiable, but true hairdressing professionalism now demands something deeper –an understanding of identity and individuality, including those within the LGBTQ+ community.
For many clients, time in the chair is about far more than just a cut or colour; it’s about being recognised, respected and, ever more increasingly, affirmed. Today, our industry has moved beyond outdated labels and assumptions about gender, style or self-expression. It is not now just progressive thinking –or on the opposing side, rainbow-washing –it should be the salon norm.
We must celebrate the richness and diversity within our industry. There is a salon space for everyone, and that’s something powerful! From gender-neutral spaces to traditional barbershops, from home salons to high-end ateliers, choice is what allows clients to find their comfortable fit and to sit where they feel understood. It’s about broadening identity and ensuring that, wherever a client chooses to go, they’re met with openness, kindness, skill and respect.
As June is Pride Month, we celebrate those for whom inclusivity is standard. Read our Pride Edit special on page 22 –because when done correctly, hairdressing becomes more than a service; it becomes a space where people truly belong.

OSMO has announced the appointment of Swansea-based colourist, Iestyn Griffiths as its newest brand ambassador, bringing with him a strong reputation for beautiful, wearable colour and a growing social media following drawn to his signature blonde work. “If you told the younger version of me – the one just starting out with a pair of scissors, a colour bowl, big dreams and a lot to prove – that one day I’d be representing a brand I’ve always loved, I honestly wouldn’t have believed you,” says Iestyn.

Novo Cabelo is proud to announce its official endorsement with HABIA, the industry’s government-recognised, standards-setting body. This milestone not only reinforces Novo Cabelo’s commitment to excellence, safety and professionalism, but also signals a wider shift in how hair replacement systems are viewed across the industry. Rob Wood, Founder of Novo Cabelo, says, “This confirms that hair replacement deserves the same rigour, structure and respect as every other professional hair service, and we are thrilled to have been recognised.”

K18 has announced the launch of the K18 Pro Artist Program, a global initiative designed to champion educators and stylists. The programme offers the K18 Pro Artists a platform to grow their reach, evolve their education offerings and connect globally through the K18 ecosystem. K18 Pro Artists are selected through applications, recruitment of established educators and identification within the stylist community. Selection is ongoing and prioritises those who teach independently, build engaged audiences and demonstrate leadership within the professional space.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of The King’s Trust and raise funds for the Change a Girl’s Life campaign, Remi Cachet has recently launched its Blow Dry Brush in signature red. The King’s Trust offers support to help young people develop essential life skills and access job opportunities, and £4 of every limited-edition brush sold will be donated to this initiative. It’s a cause close to the heart of Remi Cachet and Additional Lengths Founder, Victoria Lynch, who relied on their early support for a small loan to help start her company back in 2003.
“Without the support of The King’s Trust, my business may never have begun. This brush is our way of giving back so more young women can be supported in the same way,” says Victoria.

BaBylissPRO recently took centre stage at Cosmoprof Worldwide Bologna with the debut of Legacy, a bold new show from the BaBylissPRO Creative Team that celebrates the brand’s heritage while reimagining it for today’s industry.
We spoke to Ky Wilson, the Creative Lead on Legacy, for a deeper dive into the creative vision for this show...

The inspiration for the show came from the origins of BaBylissPRO – the invention of the first electrical curling iron in 1959 and its role in shaping 1960s glamour.
Rather than recreating the era, we used it as a starting point to reimagine 60s hair through a surreal, editorial lens. We took the exaggerated silhouettes of the decade – volume, afros, flicks and sculpted sets – and pushed them further. The aim wasn’t nostalgia, but distortion.

Visually, the show drew on a mix of fashion and photographic influences – the hyper-feminine surrealism of Nadia Lee Cohen, the polished fantasy of Jamie Nelson and the bold edge of Guy Bourdin. There were also nods to Blow-Up, Barbarella and the spirit of Studio 54, reimagined a decade earlier.

The idea behind the show was to create a full story, not just showcase hair on stage. We wanted to take the audience on a journey and build moments that brought the launch to life in an immersive and memorable way.
It opened with me on stage as an old-school radio presenter announcing the launch of the curling tong, immediately setting the tone. From there, the stage opened into a retro 1960s salon scene, with models under hood dryers reading newspapers featuring launch headlines.

As the story unfolded, the BaBylissPRO Creative Team – Syd Hayes, Ilona Kulesza, Álvaro Sánchez, Tizziana Pecorella, Michelle Sultan and me – came on stage and created the looks live, moving the audience through the story while revealing the styling in real time.

The models then moved into a catwalk section, where a paparazzi-style photographer captured them against bold VT visuals and sound, shifting the energy from salon to fashion and bringing the finished looks into focus.
The final scene saw the models queue outside ‘Studio 60’ (our 1960s-inspired twist on Studio 54). Six more models joined, the stage became a party and the hair came to life in a new way –bigger, bolder and moving under the lights.

A massive shout-out to the whole team who brought this to life! It was a real collective effort from start to finish.
To the Creative Team, thank you for trusting the vision and pushing every look further. The detail across texture, shape and finish made the final result so powerful.
A huge thank you to Andy Turner for shaping the production and turning the concept into something real on stage. Every transition and every energy shift was so carefully executed.
To the models, thank you for fully committing to the story and bringing the looks to life with so much presence and attitude.
And to the wider BaBylissPRO team, thank you for the support and the platform to create something on this scale.
It genuinely felt like one team –no egos, just everyone working together to create something special.

BROOKE EVANS
PROFESSIONAL FREELANCE HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR 2025
SPONSORED BY AWARDS

Brooke Evans is an award-winning hairdresser and Founder of The Grid Collective in Shropshire, an award-winning space that is celebrated for its innovative, community-focused and sustainable approach. She is widely regarded as a rising figure in UK hairdressing, combining technical expertise with a strong focus on creativity, education and modern salon culture.

Most memorable After Party moment?
The entertainment! There was an incredible sax player and a bongo drummer. It was just so good to dance the night away with my pals!
What made you want to enter the Pro Hair Awards 2025?
I actually entered for all the other freelance stylists in the UK. I feel like sometimes we are not heard, and that we can be looked down upon in the industry. I really wanted to show that what we do is incredible, and it’s just as worthy as any other stylist.
How did it feel when your name was announced as the winner of Professional Freelance Hairdresser of the Year 2025? Honestly, it was wild to me. Especially having had a little bit of time out after having my son, I just wasn’t expecting it. When they called out my name, I was stood at the back with Hooker & Young and some old work friends, just drinking a glass of Prosecco and holding my bag. It just didn’t register at all. My friend Harry from Tim Scott-Wright’s salon was like “That’s you!”, then I was like “Oh my God, that’s me!” It was absolutely such an incredible feeling.
What does winning this award mean to you?
This award means a lot to me. Being a mum now, I wanted to represent women and show that we can still work hard and triumph. Just because you have new responsibilities as a parent, that doesn’t mean you can’t achieve your dreams.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to enter this year?
Don’t just submit a boring block of writing! It’s so important the judges see your personality come through.
Can you share any exciting plans you have for the coming months?
I am pregnant and my baby is due in August this year! So, my plans are a bit crazy right now, but my focus is really on growing the freelance space in the salon. I am very proud of the fact that we do everything here legally, and with the best interest of the hairdressers in mind. (Especially after hearing some people’s stories!) I really pride us on being a great advocate for the self-employed.
Did you make any new friends or contacts on the night?
Yes – I actually have a funny story about this! I do freelance and education work for Alan Howard, and I was having a conversation with a gent that I didn’t

really know. He told me he worked for Alan Howard, and I was like “Oh, what do you do?”, and he said, “I co-own it.” I couldn’t believe I didn’t know this! I ended up talking with him for ages, and he was lovely!
Did you catch up with anyone you hadn’t seen in a long time?
Yes! Having not been to an industry event for a while, it was so nice to see all these faces. I also got to party with my old team at Tim Scott-Wright – I even ended up sharing a hotel with them! It was just really nice to get stuck back into the industry and let my hair down. I came back buzzing.
Who had the best moves on the dancefloor?
Wendy from Alan Howard, 100%!
Where have you put your trophy?!
The trophy is literally right next to me when I work, so all my lovely clients can see it. It’s a talking point for everybody; they see the award and ask all about the night and what was done to achieve it.
Any other comments?
I have to say, the atmosphere was incredible and the venue was so cool. From the outside, I just thought ‘Hmmm, what’s this going to be like?’, but then when you walk down those stairs and see everything – wow! It was such a cool space to have a party.
Three words to describe the Live Final night? Buzzing. Loud. Memorable.

“I began my career working in prestigious salons – including John Carne, TONI&GUY and Charles Worthington – before moving into the freelance world. As a freelancer, I’ve been fortunate to experience many different aspects of the hair industry, working on shows at London, Milan and Paris Fashion Week, as well as TV commercials, magazine photoshoots, red carpet events and celebrity styling.
In 2018, I launched my own home salon after becoming passionate about challenging the stigma that was often attached to home-based salon businesses. Since then, my home salon has grown into a six-figure business that has allowed me to build a career that works around my family life. I’m a huge advocate for home salons and the flexibility, freedom and creativity they can offer stylists.”

What made you want to enter the Pro Hair Awards 2025?
As a passionate advocate for home salons, I was delighted to see a category dedicated to them. I’ve worked incredibly hard to challenge outdated perceptions and showcase the professionalism and quality that home salons can offer, so entering felt like a natural step. Of course, I also wanted to bring the award home to Surrey as recognition for all the work that’s gone into building my salon and challenging that stigma.
How did it feel when your name was announced as the winner of Professional Home Salon of the Year 2025?
It was completely surreal! It was such a huge moment in my career and very emotional. To have the work I’ve put into my business recognised on that level was just incredibly special.
What does winning this award mean to you?
It means so much to me. I’ve been on a mission for years to champion the home salon model and prove how successful and professional it can be, so to receive that level of recognition felt incredible. I’m so grateful.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to enter this year?
Be true to yourself and to your business. Really think about what the judges are asking and answer honestly. Connect with your purpose, show your passion and don’t be afraid to share your story. Authenticity always stands out.
Can you share any exciting plans you have for the coming months?
My business is actually evolving into more of a collective. My brand is no longer just about me; it’s about the talented stylists who are part of the journey as well. We’re also planning to move into a new space in the future, which is a very exciting next chapter.

How has winning Professional Home Salon of the Year impacted your business and your clients?
My clients were incredibly proud and excited when they heard the news. The award also attracted some local press coverage, which helped raise our profile and brought new clients through the door. It’s been a fantastic boost for the salon!
Any other comments?
Unfortunately, I wasn’t there on the night as I was delayed flying home from Ibiza. When I finally landed and saw that I had won, I screamed! I was gutted to miss the moment in person, but the feeling of finding out and the emotions that followed are something I’ll always remember and cherish.
Where have you put your trophy?
It’s proudly displayed on the reception desk in my salon, so I see it every day. It’s a constant reminder of how far the business has come and everything that it’s achieved.
“I’ve worked incredibly hard to challenge outdated perceptions and showcase the professionalism and quality that home salons can offer, so entering felt like a natural step.”

Calligraphy Cut has unveiled its latest innovation: a precision-engineered pen designed specifically for cutting hair extensions.
Developed with input from leading industry experts, the new tool aims to refine blending, improve longevity and elevate the overall finish of professional extension work.

At the forefront of this collaboration is Inanch Emir, Founder of Inanch London and one of the UK’s most recognised hair extension specialists. For the campaign, Inanch and her team crafted a series of bold, editorial looks –ranging from sleek, high-shine lengths to voluminous, textured curls. At the heart of Revlon Professional is a belief that its strongest impact is its people. Nowhere is that more clear than through Visionaries –the brand’s year-long mentorship programme designed to accelerate the careers of emerging hairdressing talent. Here, Brand Master Educator for Revlon Professional UK & Ireland, Karen Thomas, talks us through the mentorship, belief and human stories that bring Revlon Professional’s culture to life.

As the driving force behind Visionaries, Karen Thomas understands that the programme has always been about far more than technical development. “For me, Visionaries is about people,” she says. “It’s about spotting that spark in someone, and helping them realise what they’re truly capable of. It’s not just a programme; it’s a responsibility.”
That sense of responsibility sits at the heart of Revlon Professional’s ethos. Through Visionaries, its values are brought vividly to life –not simply through products or education, but through belief, mentorship and human connection. “Within Revlon Professional, Visionaries represents our commitment to investing in the future of the industry –not just through products, but through people,” Karen explains. “That’s where real impact is built.”
Each year, the programme brings together emerging talent and offers them a fast-tracked route into new levels of confidence, visibility and opportunity. While technical skill may open the door, Karen is clear that it is never the only thing that matters. “Technical skill gets you in the room, but it’s not what sets someone apart,” she says. “We’re looking for the right attitude and a willingness to grow. A true Visionary is open, curious and brave enough to push themselves outside of their comfort zone. It’s about how they show up –for their clients, for their peers and for the industry as a whole.”
At its core, Karen believes the biggest transformation happens internally. “The biggest shift I hope to see is in confidence,” she says. “When people start to believe in their voice and their value, everything changes –how they present themselves, how they create and how they lead.”
That belief, she says, can be career-defining. “One person believing in you at the right time can change your entire trajectory. This industry can be tough, and self-doubt is all too real, but having someone say, “I see you, and I think you can go further,” gives people permission to step up... and sometimes that’s all they need.”
It is those moments of transformation that stay with her most: seeing once-reserved creatives grow into confident speakers, salon owners and award-winning names. Karen speaks warmly about the confidence that builds –not just individually, but collectively, as the cohort moves through the programme together.
“Seeing the bonds that form within the group is incredible,” she says. “It becomes a support system that lasts well beyond the programme.”
For Karen, leading the Visionaries feels deeply personal. “This industry gave me so much, so being able to give back and help shape the next generation feels like coming full circle,” she says. That spirit of care, honesty and respect is, for her, Revlon Professional’s philosophy in action –a culture that supports people not only for what they can achieve, but for who they are.
Looking ahead to the next cohort, what excites Karen most is the potential each group brings. “Every team has its own energy,” she says.
“Watching them step into bigger spaces, find their voice and start shaping their own paths –that’s the most exciting part. I can’t wait for them to step onto that rollercoaster!”
Ultimately, her ambition is simple but powerful: “I want them to feel proud of who they are, how far they’ve come and what they’re capable of next. When their time as a Visionary is up, it’s really just the beginning...”

BENJAMIN SHIPMAN, CO-FOUNDER OF THE HAIR MOVEMENT
With rising costs, many salon owners are considering price increases, but how do you do this without upsetting your loyal clientele? Benjamin Shipman gives us his top tips for making price adjustments smooth and stress-free.
1
Be Transparent and Confident in Your Communication:
If you are making a small price increase, there is no need to make a big announcement (it’s no different than going to a restaurant and noticing your favourite meal is slightly more expensive!). However, if a stylist has been promoted and their pricing reflects their enhanced experience, then you should communicate this clearly and confidently.
2 Give Clients Plenty of Notice:
No one likes unexpected surprises when it comes to their bill, so always make sure your clients are informed well in advance. Whether it’s via email, social media or a polite mention at checkout, keeping them in the loop ensures they feel respected and valued.

3
Own Your Worth and Stand By It:
One of the biggest mistakes salon owners make is feeling guilty about increasing prices. If your services are high quality and your team is skilled, then your pricing should reflect that. Never apologise for raising your prices! Own your worth, and your clients will respect your confidence.

I’ve been in this industry for over 40 years, and for more than 20 of those I’ve run my own salon, Urban Hair & Beauty. From the very beginning, I’ve always employed up to three apprentices at a time, and always making sure they have a position at the end of their training. Here’s why:
1
To Keep the Salon Relevant: One of the most exciting aspects of working with apprentices is the fresh perspective they bring. They’re often naturally skilled with social media and digital tools, as well as having their finger on the pulse with fresh emerging styles and techniques.
2
To Support Senior Stylists: In practical terms, apprentices help the day-to-day running go smoothly, while senior staff can focus on pushing
creative boundaries. This allows the salon to accommodate extra clients without compromising on quality.
3
To Spark Innovation: There’s something about the energy apprentices bring that is contagious! Their enthusiasm and curiosity can spark fresh ideas, encourage new techniques and keep the team motivated. For seasoned stylists, it’s a reminder of why we fell in love with this job in the first place.
4
To Build Leadership: Mentoring apprentices is incredibly rewarding for everyone involved, and senior stylists can develop strong leadership skills by guiding someone else’s learning. They learn to give constructive feedback, and support professional growth.
5
To Invest in the Future: Apprenticeships are about more than just training; they’re a way to invest in the future of the industry and give something back. Despite the challenges of the current economic climate, taking on young people and supporting their careers allows salons to foster a skilled, motivated workforce.
SARAH YORKE, FOUNDER OF STYLEBOOK DIRECTORY
Employers, educators and clients are increasingly discovering new talent online, which means a young hairdresser’s digital presence matters more than ever. While social media can be an incredible platform to build opportunities, it’s important that young professionals understand how to protect themselves. Here are three simple tips that can help:

• Create a Professional Profile: Having a dedicated professional profile for your hair work is a great starting point. This keeps your portfolio, models and achievements in one place and allows employers or potential clients to see your work clearly.
• Keep Personal Profiles Private: Your personal life and professional life don’t need to mix online. Setting personal accounts to private helps protect your privacy while keeping your professional presence focused on your work.
• Use the Same Name Across Platforms: Consistency matters. Using the same professional name or handle across platforms makes it easier for people to find and recognise you.

When I am not creating and running my award-winning salon group, ROAR Hair & Beauty, you may well find me on stage performing as my drag alter ego ‘Ginger Rogers’.
My work as a drag queen has been a powerful asset for creating an inclusive salon space and environment. After so many years performing in shows overseas and in clubs across the UK, I’ve found that those who come to watch me perform are from all walks of life. For me, this is true inclusivity at its core.
When I first opened ROAR in 2017, I wanted to create a space that welcomed everyone. It was about taking the environment I had become accustomed to when performing in drag and translating that into the salon environment.
Here are some of the steps I have taken to build an inclusive salon group and safe space, directly influenced by my drag work.
1
One of the most effective ways to create an inclusive environment is by taking a flexible approach. A one-size-fits-all method can cause huge limitations, so it’s important to treat every guest as an individual with their own unique needs and preferences.
At ROAR, we welcome guests with a
wide range of cultural, religious and personal requirements, including those who wear a hijab or require additional privacy. Guests can discuss private space requests with us in advance.
2
Respecting Pronouns
Respecting pronouns is another essential part of how we connect with our guests, and it’s a small but powerful step towards making people feel truly seen. At ROAR, we have integrated a pronoun awareness booking system and undertaken staff training, ensuring every guest feels acknowledged from the moment they walk through the door.
From day one, we also implemented gender-neutral pricing, as it was important to us that our prices were fair and equal to everyone – regardless of how an individual identifies. This approach ensures pricing is based on technique, time and complexity, reinforcing fairness in an industry where gender-based costs have long been the norm.
3Offer a Diverse Colour Menu
Having such a diverse colour menu is a fabulous and fun way to become more inclusive, and offering an extensive range of vibrant colours provides guests with an opportunity to express their personalities through their hair. When I

am on stage as Ginger, I absolutely love that I can really push the boundaries and have a lot of fun with my image! Just as drag celebrates the unique personality of us as performers, the same approach can also be applied to the salon to create a hub of creativity and self-expression.

At ROAR, we love experimenting and pushing the boundaries of colour. We have a fantastic team that is wellexperienced in creating customised colour transformations, and we have created a space where self-expression is celebrated.
Charlotte Paints Hair Studio is a space for everyone, but we’re especially proud to be an inclusive, safe space. We’re located in a community where many women wear headscarves for religious reasons, so we’ve made our upstairs salon area totally private. This means these female clients can remove their headscarves with confidence, without any men present. That trust is sacred to us.
Charlotte O’Flanagan, Owner of Charlotte Paints Hair Studio
Is it actually important that you offer diversity and inclusivity in your salon spaces?
Of course it is. The salon experience should feel comfortable for everyone. Hair is such a personal thing, and if someone feels misjudged or misunderstood, that can completely change the experience.
We know that a lot of people, especially within the LGBTQ+ community, have had negative experiences in salons – whether that’s being misgendered or just not feeling at ease – so something as simple as removing gendered language and pricing can make a big difference. It allows people to just come in and be themselves without having to explain anything.

When did you introduce gender-neutral services and why?
We introduced gender-neutral pricing about seven or eight years ago. At the time, it wasn’t really being talked about, but for us it felt quite obvious. We’d built Butchers around individuality, so pricing hair based on gender just didn’t sit right. The industry had been working on the assumption that men have short hair and women have long hair, but that’s not really how it works in reality. We wanted to move away from that and base things on what we’re actually doing behind the chair. Some men were paying £10 less for the same haircut as the next female guest – that had to stop.
So how does the pricing system work? Essentially, we just charge for the service, not the gender. It’s based on time, technicality and the level of detail involved. A short cut can often take just
as much time, if not more, than long hair, so it never made sense to price it differently. For us, it’s just a more honest way of doing things.

How do you market and promote your salons as being inclusive and diverse? We don’t really treat it as something separate to market, it’s just built into everything we do – our pricing, our booking system, the language we use, how we train the team. It naturally comes through in our content, but it’s more important that people feel it when they come into the space. If it feels forced, people can tell, so we focus more on getting the experience right.
1
Start with your pricing. If you’re still separating services by gender, you’re building in a divide from the outset. Moving to service-based pricing is one of the clearest and most practical shifts you can make.
2
Remove gendered language wherever you can. Website, booking system, service descriptions –all those small details matter more than people think. It changes how someone feels before they’ve even arrived.
3
Focus on how your team actually communicates. It’s not about scripts or getting the ‘right’ terminology perfect,

it’s about making guests feel comfortable. That comes from being open, listening properly and not making assumptions.
4
Look at the full experience, not just the haircut.
From booking and consultation to how someone is greeted, it should all feel considered. Inclusivity isn’t one big gesture; it’s lots of small things done consistently.
5
Create a space where people can relax into being themselves. If someone can come in, sit down and not feel judged or categorised, you’ve done your job properly.

KERI
BLUE, FOUNDER OF AFFIRMATION HAIR AND ART STUDIO
Hair is identity. It’s self-expression. It’s power. For so long, our industry has operated in a really binary way – you’re either a man getting a short back and sides or a woman getting a blow-dry – but that doesn’t reflect the real, beautiful, messy, wonderful spectrum of humanity that walks through our doors every single day.
Diversity in the professional hair space matters. When people don’t see themselves represented – on our social media, on our price lists, in the language we use –the message we’re inadvertently sending is: you don’t belong here. And nobody should ever feel that way in a salon chair, somewhere that’s supposed to be a place of transformation and joy.
For trans and non-binary clients especially, a haircut isn’t just a haircut; it can be a profound moment of gender euphoria. That incredible feeling of joy and comfort when your outer appearance finally aligns with who you know yourself to be on the inside. We have the privilege of being part of that, and that’s not something to take lightly.
Through Affirmation Studio, my whole mission is to provide gender-affirming training and education for the hair and barber industry. I genuinely believe that hairdressers and barbers are in one of the most powerful positions to make trans and non-binary people feel seen and safe. Most stylists want to do right by their clients, they just don’t always know where to start – that’s what I’m here for.
Remember, inclusivity isn’t a June initiative; it’s a daily practice. When it comes to making your salon more inclusive, it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start small, start today.
Diversity in hair should be a given, not a trend. Our industry works with people from every background, identity and expression, so professional spaces need to reflect that properly. For me, inclusivity is about creating an environment where people feel seen, respected and understood, both in the chair and within the team.
Hair brands need to show up with substance, not just rainbow packaging for one month. Support should look like real representation, long-term action, inclusive education and backing the communities they want to celebrate.

GEORGE WATERFIELD & DARREN CUNNINGHAM, CO-OWNERS OF THE SECRET GARDEN
George Waterfield and Darren Cunningham are Co-Owners of The Secret Garden in Leicester –the city’s first openly queerinclusive and gender-neutral salon, as well as the lead sponsor for Leicester Pride. Here, they discuss some of the ways that salon owners and stylists can kick-start true LGBTQ+ and gender inclusivity that lasts all year round…
1
Be Visible With Your Support
Inclusivity begins before a client even walks through the door. Visual cues can make a big difference, especially for someone who might be anxious about visiting a salon. A Pride sticker in the window, inclusive language on your website or a rainbow flag outside or at reception can instantly communicate that LGBTQ+ clients are welcome. For many people, that visible sign can be the reason they feel confident booking their first appointment.
2
Train Your Team on Inclusive Language
It’s really important to create a culture where learning about inclusivity is encouraged. We run regular training on pronouns, inclusive greetings and respectful communication to help our stylists feel more confident with our LGBTQ+ clients. We know that stylists can worry about getting it wrong because they don’t want to upset anyone, so we give all new team members specific guidance on inclusive client care.
3
Remove Gendered Labels From Your Service Menu
One of the most impactful changes salons can make is to remove gendered pricing and service labels. Labelling services as men’s and women’s can unintentionally make some clients feel excluded. Instead, consider structuring your menu around factors that genuinely affect the service, such as hair length or time needed. Not only will this remove barriers to booking, but it actually makes pricing clearer and fairer for everyone.
4
Create Safe Conversations in the Chair
Hair is so closely linked to our identity, and for many in the LGBTQ+ community, the salon chair can be an emotional space. We remind our stylists that they don’t need to have all the answers; they just need to create an environment where clients feel comfortable discussing what they want. Sometimes, inclusivity means being loud and proud, but at other times, it’s in the quiet moments of understanding.
5
Support Your Local Pride Community
As sponsors of our own city’s Pride event, we want to be clear that Pride isn’t just a marketing opportunity; it’s an important community event. You can get involved in so many ways – such as attending and celebrating as allies with your team, sharing event information on your socials or getting involved with hosting styling stations.
Truly, the most important thing salons can do is ensure inclusivity continues long after Pride month ends. That means continuing staff education, updating policies, listening to client feedback and maintaining visible support for the LGBTQ+ community. If you need a business case, the commercial benefit is that when clients feel safe and respected, they return and they tell others. Remember, when someone finds a salon where they can truly relax and be themselves, loyalty follows. We all need to continue to push for greater inclusivity in the industry, so why not make Pride the perfect place for your salon to start?

I think it’s important for brands and stylists to actively support initiatives and charities that align with inclusivity, not just talk about it. Whether that’s fundraising, education or community work, it shows real commitment. As stylists, we’re in a unique position to make people feel confident and accepted every single day, and that’s something we should never take for granted. Iestyn Griffiths, Brand Ambassador for OSMO

Continuing our conversation for 2026, we ask experts up and down the country their thoughts on specific hair types, textures and treatments. This month, we have everything you need to know about blonde hair…
OWNER OF RIO HAIR
“Blonde hair is always a balance between achieving the perfect lift and maintaining the integrity of the hair. For me, it starts with reliable lightening – I love OSMO, especially the 9-level lift bleach, as it gives consistent results without compromising too much on condition.
Protecting the hair throughout the process is just as important, which is where the Revlon Professional Magnet range comes in – it really helps to support and strengthen the hair during chemical services.
Post-colour, I always reach for K18 - the Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask is brilliant for restoring strength and keeping blondes feeling healthy rather than over-processed.
And then for at-home maintenance, I always recommend a good purple shampoo, and Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME is a go-to for keeping tone fresh and bright between appointments.”

OWNER OF DANIELS SALON
“This summer, as every summer, we are looking at beautiful hair and great condition. Think more cognac tones, vanilla blondes, fawn blondes, honey blondes and sable golds. In terms of cultural references, we have the Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy colour palette, which is paler, and the (dare I say it) Melania Trump palette, which is warmer, as well as Margot Robbie for the Brontë blonde. However, the overall condition is always more important than the aesthetic.”
ARTISAN STYLIST AT THE HAIR MOVEMENT
“For blondes this summer, the focus is on creating softer, more seamless results. For balayage guests, that means finer sections with slightly heavier coverage, but still maintaining that lived-in feel – more blended, less contrast. At the same time, we’re seeing a return to classic foil work. Traditional techniques are coming back, but with a more modern, refined finish that prioritises softness and longevity.”
AMBASSADOR FOR WELLA PROFESSIONALS
“Lightening services are the most requested services in the salon now. People are demanding high-performing blondes, and we live in a world now, thanks to social media, where unrealistic, unattainable blonde is what people want. So, we need to upgrade the products to create those amazing blondes. Thankfully, Wella’s Blondor Plex has been upgraded to the next level! I have been working on this product restage for two years, and I can honestly say that the upgrade is absolutely amazing. Everyone wants brighter and lighter hair, andclients are asking for hair that makes them feel more positive, happier and brighter. Everyone knows that blonde does that for you! I read a statement somewhere that said blonde represents investment, not indulgence, and I really liked that. ‘Lived-in’ colour was big for a long time, but now it’s really nice to see the opposite – it’s just great to see people colouring their hair more!”
“My go-to, non-negotiable for blonde hair is the K18 Mask. When my blondies leave the salon, I know they’re taking home more than just great hair; they’re leaving with the care they need to maintain its strength and condition. It’s my way of ensuring their hair continues to look its best between visits, in turn reflecting the standard I pride myself on.
My blondies who consistently use the K18 Damage Shield Shampoo and Conditioner – along with the K18 Molecular Repair Hair Oil for heat protection and frizz control – truly set themselves apart. Blonde hair naturally reflects less shine than brunettes, so maintaining its health is a no-brainer. The healthier the hair, the more radiant and glossy the result.”

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR AT HARE & BONE
“We all know that a good purple shampoo is essential for keeping blondes bright, but it shouldn’t be overused –hydration and keratin are just as important. Treatments that rebuild bonds and add moisture are non-negotiable if you want that expensive-looking blonde.
When working with blonde hair, you have to approach it with a lot of care and intention. It’s often more fragile, so your cutting technique should complement the condition. If the hair needs a chop, don’t be shy. I always advise clients to let go of any lengths that are going to break in the future, as healthier hair makes the colour take better and last longer.”

BRAND AMBASSADOR FOR NXT
“When it comes to working with blonde hair, it’s important to understand its inner structure – whether that be coloured or natural. Blonde hair is usually slightly more delicate, and therefore we must be thoughtful when working with it. I LOVE the NXT Pro-Tech Bleach for this, the added bond protection allows me to lighten blonde hair with an extra consideration for hair health.”
AMBASSADOR FOR JOICO BLONDE LIFE
“A thorough consultation is essential for blonde clients – including lifestyle, expectations and maintenance commitment. In uncertain cases, always perform a strand test to understand how the hair reacts to lightening. Remember, less is more and over-lightening leads to damage, banding and unnatural results.
When it comes to colour placement, always think about what will support the haircut – where does the client need brightness? Where should the depth remain? A strong result comes from intentional placement, not randomness. Blonde is not just a colour; it’s a system of technique, quality and responsibility.”
OWNER OF MICHELLE DAVIES HAIR
“In the salon, I’m finding there’s a real move away from heavy balayage and foilyage. There’s more demand for cleaner, root-to-tip blonding again, but done in a much softer, more controlled way than it used to be. Fine foiling and micro-weaving are key for me, as they allow you to get that brightness to the root without creating harsh lines. It keeps the result seamless and far more premium looking At the same time, grey blending has become one of the most in-demand techniques. It’s not about full coverage anymore; it’s about diffusing and softening the regrowth so clients can embrace their natural hair in a more modern way.
What’s important now is that these techniques can be tailored – whether the client wants something natural and subtle or more creative and expressive. For me, the best techniques are the ones that give longevity, softness and maintain the condition of the hair, not just lift.”
“Warm blondes will continue to reign supreme in 2026! I’d tell your clients to stay away from any ultraviolet products, as that will dull their blonde. Instead, recommend committing to a toner more frequently. Most blondes get their hair done every twelve weeks, so I’d recommend a toner every six weeks for a refresh. This will keep the warm-toned blonde looking bright!”

OWNER OF CHARLOTTE PAINTS HAIR STUDIO
“Blonde hair aftercare is essential for maintaining both the perfect tone and the overall condition of the hair. Blonde hair is often more porous due to the lightening process, which means it can lose moisture quickly and become more vulnerable to dryness, breakage and tonal fade. That’s why educating clients on the importance of professional aftercare is key.
I always recommend incorporating a deeply nourishing conditioning mask at least once a week to restore moisture and keep the hair feeling soft and healthy. Alongside this, using a heat protection spray is non-negotiable when blow-drying or heat styling, as blonde hair can be more fragile and prone to damage from high temperatures
It’s also important to be mindful of the types of shampoos being used at home. Overuse of clarifying or harsh products can strip the hair and cause the tone to fade more quickly. Instead, opting for colour-safe, hydrating formulas will help prolong the life of the blonde and maintain its vibrancy between appointments.”

SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL
Offering ultimate lift and neutralisation, IGORA ROYAL Highlifts has been formulated by Schwarzkopf Professional for cool blondes and those who want to be. With up to five levels of lift and an innovative TrueLift Complex for a more powerful lift, the formula uses integrated Schwarzkopf Bonding to help protect hair bonds for minimised

Planet Blonde is an ultra-violet shampoo and conditioner duo that works hard to cool the warm tones in yellow, brassy and grey hair. Containing Hydrolysed Soy Protein and Ashwagandha Root Extract, the products strengthen and reduce breakage whilst adding smoothness

INDOLA
Indola is taking the guesswork out of lift-and-tone services with the launch of PCC Smart Lift, the latest one-step lift and tone innovation in its PCC Portfolio. With seven new shades that deliver up to 4 levels of lift, Smart Lift offers a smarter, gentler way to lift, tone and transform hair with precision and care.
Say hello to Blondor Plex 9 from Wella Professionals – now featuring built-in Metal Purifier to deliver cleaner, brighter, high-clarity blondes without adding extra steps. Understanding that hidden metals in the hair can cause an uneven lift and unwanted warmth, the new products work to remove these impurities during the lightening service, giving you a more predictable lift and luminous results.
OSMO
Introducing the new look OSMO Toning Collection –a comprehensive line-up of colour-correcting shampoos, masks and leave-in treatments expertly formulated to neutralise unwanted tones, enhance vibrancy and maintain salon-fresh results between appointments. The targeted pigment technology works to keep blondes looking cleaner, brighter and beautifully balanced.

K18
Crafted to create brighter, longer-lasting blondes, the new TripleBright Oxidation Defense Purple Shampoo from K18 removes metals and minerals to restore ideal hair tones. The easy-to-apply, foaming shampoo is powered by K18 triple-action technology to neutralise existing brassiness without staining or overtoning, as well as defending against future brassiness too.

Hairdressing is one of the most versatile careers – and it’s definitely not all about life on the salon floor. From backstage at Fashion Week to global education platforms, developing product lines and coaching the next generation, today’s hair pros are carving out incredible careers in every corner of the industry. In this series, we spotlight the trailblazers who have taken their craft into new arenas and found extraordinary success along the way.
When you think of Adam Reed, you think of creativity, connection and hair that defines the moment. From backstage at Fashion Week to editorial shoots and global campaigns, Adam has built an extraordinary career in session styling, creating iconic looks for designers, celebrities and leading fashion titles. In this edition of Hairdressing Unbound, we sit down with Adam to explore how a career in session work is built, and

How did you first get into session work? What was the turning point that led you away from the salon floor? I never consciously decided to leave the salon floor; I’ve always maintained working in the salon. For me, it was about expanding, not stepping away. My career was really built on strong networking foundations – meeting people, building relationships and collaborating to create work. My first ever show was ‘Red or Dead’ in 1996, and I made a point of speaking to

everything. It wasn’t just about the hair; it was about the people and the collaboration. That’s what naturally led me into session work.
Was there a single moment you knew session was your path?
I’d say it was when I was lead hair on Matthew Williamson in New York in 2003. That year, things really fell into place. The look we created – the Boho Braid – became one of the defining looks of the season. There was no social media then, but the press really picked it up, and you could just feel the momentum building around it. It’s one of those moments that stays with you, and the fact that the look still holds its own today makes it even more special.
What has been the most memorable moment so far?
It always comes back to Fashion Week –the build-up, the energy, the people. There’s nothing quite like it. It’s about creating a look that becomes part of the collection, part of the moment. Seeing everything come together – the clothes, the hair, the make-up – and knowing it will go on to influence how people want to look and feel. There’s a legacy in that. You create something in a moment, but it can stay with people long after. That’s what makes it so special.
What has been your biggest challenge?
I’d honestly say the biggest challenge is (and always will be!) financial balance. Shows, shoots and creative projects are so much more than what happens on the day. They can take weeks of

preparation –building teams, sourcing products, organising hair, travel... and it all adds up! More often than not, those costs aren’t fully covered, and creative drive and financial return don’t always walk hand in hand. Learning how to navigate that, whilst still keeping your passion for the work, is one of the biggest challenges in this industry.
What is your secret to success?
Consistency, wherever possible – in your skill, your education and your knowledge. Never stop learning, keep questioning yourself and always aim to be better. It’s not about one big moment; it’s about showing up, improving and evolving over time.
What is your essential toolkit?
Whatever works for you is what makes it essential. I love my kit – it’s evolved over the years and continues to do so. There are pieces I’ll never replace, always new additions and, of course, a few that never quite see the light of day! My tools are the closest extension of my hands, so

What does life look like for you now?
No two days are the same, which is what I love! I’ve always kept a connection to the salon, and now the lines between salon and session work feel fully integrated. Everything feeds into each other. I also have to treat my career as a business, which hasn’t always come naturally to me, but having the right people around me has made all the difference. It’s something I’ve always sought, and it allows me to focus on what

What is your advice for someone wanting to move into the session world?
Look beyond hair. Look at fashion, art and photography. Understanding the wider creative world will make you better at what you do. And spend time assisting; it’s where you learn the real rhythm of the industry.
What do you wish you had known at the very start?
That it’s a long game. There is no one moment that changes everything –it’s built over time, through consistency, relationships and showing up, again and again. At the heart of it, it’s always been about

Give us your top three tips for breaking into session:
✔ Say yes, especially early on.
✔ Be reliable – it matters more than you think!
✔ Stay curious and keep learning.

Your client wants luscious length, voluptuous volume and gorgeous dimensional colour. They want a head of hair that makes them feel a million dollars, but they DON’T want the ethical and ecological cost burden often associated with human hair extensions.
Thankfully, Remi Cachet is the ethical and sustainable choice for extensionists and their clients. This B Corp certified brand has transparency at its core, always reflecting the values of its Founder, Victoria Lynch.
Victoria explains: “Ethical standards are at the heart of everything we do at Remi Cachet. For us, it’s not just about operating responsibly as a business; it’s about recognising that our decisions impact real people. From the sourcing of our hair, to the professionals who work with it and the clients who wear it, we are committed to respecting and valuing everyone involved. We believe in a truly end-to-end approach to ethics –that means considering every touchpoint, ensuring transparency and holding ourselves accountable to the highest standards. We care deeply because it matters –not just to our brand, but to the people and communities connected to it.”
At the heart of Remi Cachet’s model is a commitment to ethical sourcing and full
traceability through its Hair’surance® programme. This approach recognises that human hair is not a commodity; it is a human-derived material that takes years to grow and embeds dignity and transparency into the supply chain. Donors are paid fairly and volunteer, while also retaining their hair through a partial cutting and thinning method to ensure their heads are never shaved.
Remi Cachet’s definition of sustainability extends beyond environmental impact to include consumer safety, education and long-term product integrity. The brand operates a professional-only model and requires stylists to hold a recognised professional qualification in hairdressing or extensions before opening a trade account, reducing the risk of unsafe application, damage or excess waste.
In addition, there is a robust hair recycling programme to collect hair for Matter of Trust, which repurposes donations into hair mats and booms to absorb pollution. Usable hair donations from Remi Cachet’s salon network are given to Little Lady Locks –a charity that supports children experiencing hair loss. These initiatives extend the lifecycle of human hair, ultimately minimising waste while delivering meaningful social impact.

B Corp Certified:
This certification means standards across governance, environmental impact, ethics and transparency have been met or exceeded.
Quality Through Qualification and Training: Clients are protected as professional customers must demonstrate evidence of industry qualifications.
Traceable and Transparent: Clarity and visibility around donors and fair pay has been independently verified.
Sustainable: Processes are in place to purposely dispose of and donate hair.
This rigorous approach to values-driven business, transparency and standards places Remi Cachet at the forefront of the human hair extensions industry, leading the way as an ethical choice that extensionists and their clients can truly trust.
IN THIS PRO HAIR EXCLUSIVE, START WITH THE CUSTOMER AND EX JOHN LEWIS CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE DIRECTOR – TAKES US THROUGH HIS SIX-STEP JOURNEY TO BUILDING A WORLD-CLASS CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE... IN A WORLD WHERE
Whoever you think might be running your salon, there is only one real boss: the customer. And by possessing the ability to take their collective business elsewhere, your customers come armed with the unique power to fire everyone.
Putting customers first is an idea as old as business itself. When the customer comes first, they will (usually) last. You may not find this as inspirational as the latest hair trend, but the future of your business starts and ends with your customers and how you view them. Are they the cause of the odd sleepless night or a nigglesome distraction on your journey to profit? Are they your ‘be all and end all’ or your ‘neither here nor there’?

Starting with the customer actually starts by knowing your customers’ needs, hopes and aspirations better than you know your own. Great customer-focused businesses don’t just walk a mile in their customer’s shoes; they know where they pinch (and they never forget to take their own shoes off first).
Seeing life from the customer’s side of the fence means recognising that it’s actually pretty tough being a customer at the moment. You need to empathise with the irreversible impact of the forces that have shifted how customers behave –a full throttle digital revolution, a cost-of-living crisis, political uncertainty, a global pandemic and a climate crisis. Customers are busier than ever, so their expectations are higher. They live in an expectation economy, so every experience they have with one company (regardless of size or industry) sets a new expectation everywhere else. One brand’s gold standard becomes everyone else’s price of admission.
You need to understand how the digital revolution has changed how we shop for products and services. ‘Hyper Convenience’ on one side (I want it now. I want it as seamless, fast and cheap as possible.) and ‘Hyper Experience’ on the other
“When so many of our interactions with a brand are online, physical interactions in shops, showrooms and salons have to be so much better.”
(I want to take my time. I want interaction, discovery and belonging. I don’t want to feel like a number and I’ll happily pay more.)
These are two mindsets within the very same customer.
A global pandemic changed the rhythms of our lives, and how we spend time has changed forever. Time poverty is increasing; it’s limiting our attention spans and making us more anxious. We have zero tolerance for digital inconvenience. We prioritise more ruthlessly and get offended when our time is wasted, particularly if it’s by a company claiming to serve us. Because so much of life is now spent online, there is an extra pressure on the time we spend in the real world. We may live in an expectation economy, but we also live in an experience economy.
When so many of our interactions with a brand are online, physical interactions in shops, showrooms and salons have to be so much better. Because there has been so much focus on making our lives faster (and because most digital experiences are actually very similar), customers are left crying out for businesses that actually capture their imagination.
Businesses need to step back from what they’re selling and instead question why their customer is buying it. They understand that what they’re selling isn’t always the same as what the customers think they’re buying, so they spend all the energy they have left minimising the gap between the expectation and the reality.
Successful businesses know that true loyalty is scarce, fragile and increasingly fleeting, particularly in younger generations. In a world where every transaction seems to offer some form of promotion, the customer has learnt that the only way to get what they want is to play the field. True loyalty, however, is earnt over time and can never be taken for granted. Great businesses all start with the customer. Does yours?
CELEBRATING 40 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY, AWARD-WINNING HAIRDRESSER, ANDREW BARTON, BELIEVES IN EVOLVING YOUR CRAFT THROUGH CREATIVITY, BUSINESS ACUMEN AND MENTORING. THIS MONTH, WE RUMMAGE AROUND HIS KITBAG TO DISCOVER ITS HIDDEN SECRETS.
If there’s one thing I’ve learnt over the years, it’s that your kitbag is an extension of your hands. It tells the story of who you are as a stylist – your discipline, your creativity and your adaptability. Mine has evolved constantly, but there are a few constants I simply couldn’t work without. Let’s take a look!
As NAK European Brand Ambassador, my product choices are always rooted in performance, but also versatility. I need products that can move between backstage, editorial and salon work seamlessly, and that’s exactly what NAK delivers.
Let’s start with the essentials. My go-to styling prep is always about creating the perfect foundation; hair needs to behave before it can perform. I rely heavily on lightweight volumisers and thermal protectants – products that give memory to the hair without weighing it down. For me, styling isn’t about forcing the hair into shape; it’s about guiding it.

“I
When it comes to tools, I’m a firm believer that you don’t need everything –you just need the right things. A high-quality hairdryer is non-negotiable. It’s your most used tool, and it sets the tone for everything that follows. I always say, ‘if your blow-dry isn’t right, nothing else will be!’.
Then there are brushes, and this is where things get a bit personal. I still carry a couple of old-school brushes that I’ve had for years. They’ve travelled the world with me, from fashion weeks to editorial shoots. There’s something about a brush that’s been worn in over time, it almost understands how you work. You can’t buy that kind of relationship.
Of course, I also carry a range of modern
always carry a toothbrush... but not for anyone’s teeth! It’s brilliant for refining edges, smoothing flyaways and adding detail where a brush would be too heavy-handed. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference.”
tools – tongs, wands, straighteners – but I use them with intention. It’s very easy to overstyle hair now, but precision is everything. Sometimes the best styling comes from doing less, not more.
One of the most underrated tools in my kit? Clips! Sectioning clips, pin curls, grips –these are the unsung heroes. Good sectioning is the backbone of great styling. If your sectioning is sloppy, your result will be too.
Now, let’s talk about the unexpected. I always carry a toothbrush... but not for anyone’s teeth! It’s brilliant for refining edges, smoothing flyaways and adding detail where a brush would be too heavy-handed. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference.
Another unexpected item is a silk scarf. It’s something I use both practically and creatively. It can protect a finished style, add a touch of luxury to the client experience or even be incorporated into a look.
And then there’s hairspray, but not in the way you might think. I don’t believe in drenching hair; I use it sparingly, almost like seasoning. It should support the style, not suffocate it.
Working with Racoon hair extensions has also influenced what I carry. Extensions require precision and care, so I always have tools specifically for blending and refining. A tail comb is essential, as is a good cutting razor for softening edges.
Ultimately, my kitbag isn’t about having the most things; it’s about having the right things. Every item earns its place and every tool has a purpose. At the end of the day, great styling doesn’t come from what you carry; it comes from how you use it...
BACK IN 2009, KATYA MILAVIC DAVIES LAUNCHED MYLA AND DAVIS, AN INDEPENDENT, SOUTH LONDON HAIRDRESSING GROUP WITH FOUR SALONS. IN THE LAST OF HER EXCLUSIVE SERIES WITH , KATYA EXPLORES HOW TO CULTIVATE A SUPERCHARGED SALON CULTURE WITH A THOROUGHLY MODERN MINDEST.
At Myla and Davis, education is our heartbeat. Since day one, we’ve championed that sharing knowledge openly (and not guarding it) builds confidence, creativity and consistency across our teams. It’s a mindset that has supported our growth while helping us create a genuinely inclusive culture.
Our dedication to inclusivity is intentional. As a London-based business, we recognise that diversity is part of our everyday reality. Reflecting and celebrating that within our salons isn’t just important; it’s what keeps our spaces creative, relevant and welcoming. It builds trust and a sense of belonging, which are essential for both strong teams and lasting client relationships.

That trust comes from a commitment to ongoing learning – not only at our in-house apprentice Academy, but also for our experienced stylists. It’s what has allowed us to grow sustainably and open new spaces with teams aligned on quality, culture and care, always creating environments where all hair types are welcomed, celebrated and respected.
Empowering our teams through education has shaped the way we do everything. Here’s how:
1
We use education to challenge exclusivity. Salons are powerful spaces, and they can either reinforce exclusivity or challenge it. We’ve always been clear about where we stand. For us, the ethos is simple: an interest in people pays the greatest dividends, and education is how we bring that to life.
2
We build confidence across all hair types. Through training, mentoring and daily skill-sharing, we invest in education so that our teams feel confident working with all textures and styles. It’s not a one-off; it’s a commitmentthat keeps standards high and knowledge evolving.
“Salons are powerful spaces, and they can either reinforce exclusivity or challenge it. We’ve always been clear about where we stand.”
3
We connect education to representation. What our teams learn shapes how we show up. From the language we use to the imagery we share, our marketing reflects real people and a broader, more inclusive view of beauty. That comes from awareness as much as technical skill.
4
We create opportunities to grow through everyday learning. By investing in people at every level, we embed education into the day-to-day through regular in-salon training and mentoring. This supports both personal and professional development in a way that feels accessible and consistent, ultimately creating space for growth at every stage –from apprentices to senior stylists – and encouraging people to grow with them.
5
We go beyond technical skills. In a fast-moving industry, technical ability alone isn’t enough. Ongoing education keeps teams engaged and adaptable, while also developing the softer skills – communication, empathy, leadership and consistency – that sustain a business over the long term.
6
We build inclusivity from the inside out. Our inclusive culture is reflected in how we hire, train and develop our teams. We prioritise open dialogue, representation in leadership and equal opportunities, so every stylist – and every client – feels seen and respected.
To allow your people to shine, education should always take centre stage. Developing talent from within means you can effectively nurture future leaders who share your values. By building skills and confidence internally, you can expand in a way that feels authentic and grounded, not forced, while ensuring every client and team member feels they truly belong in your hairdressing story.
3 Minutes. 3 Bonds. 3x Stronger. 3x Softer.
OLAPLEX introduces the next evolution of its iconic treatment with No.3PLUS Complete Repair Treatment, a breakthrough pre-shampoo treatment designed to deliver stronger, softer, healthier-looking hair in just three minutes.*
Powered by OLAPLEX’spatented Bond Building Technology™ and its new Damage Defense Cationic Complex, No.3PLUS brings professional-grade repair into a faster, simpler, more modern ritual that fits seamlessly into real life and delivers results clients can see and feel instantly –from cortex to cuticle, from the inside out.
Since its original launch, No.3 Hair Perfector transformed how clients think about hair repair by bringing advanced bond technology out of the salon and into everyday routines. With No.3PLUS, OLAPLEX continues to advance the category it introduced, evolving bond repair to how hair is treated today while helping defend against the damage of tomorrow.
In just three minutes, No.3PLUS works deep inside every strand, from cortex to cuticle, to rebuild all three bonds –disulfide bonds, salt bonds and hydrogen bonds –in the hair’s structure, delivering 360° repair for past and present damage, while strengthening hair against future stress.

The formula is clinically proven to reverse hair damage after one use, over time delivering 75% stronger internal hair structure and helping reduce breakage and support long-term length retention. Designed for all hair types and all types of damage, No.3PLUS repairs daily wear, chemical processing, heat styling and environmental stress in one fast, easy step before shampoo.

“What makes No.3PLUS
different is that the hair doesn’t just look better –it behaves better. It’s stronger, more resilient and easier to work with over time.”
Tracey Cunningham, Celebrity Stylist and OLAPLEX Global Ambassador
“At OLAPLEX, our focus has always been on addressing hair damage at its source,” said Amanda Baldwin, CEO of OLAPLEX. “Chemical services remain the most significant cause of structural damage to hair, and meaningful repair must begin there. No one is immune to damage - from heat styling and brushing to environmental exposure, we can all benefit from a healthy hair routine. That’s why bond repair shouldn’t be reserved for extreme damage; it should be a foundational part of everyone’s routine . No.3PLUS represents the next chapter of bond repair by delivering long-term hair health in a format that fits how people live today.”
For professionals, No.3PLUS reinforces what they have long trusted: that OLAPLEX sets the gold standard in bond repair.
Used before shampoo on generously wet hair and rinsed after just three minutes, No.3PLUS delivers expert-level repair without heaviness or residue. The formula is protein-free, sulphate-free, colour-safe and suitable for chemically-treated hair, making it easy to incorporate into any routine, for any client, on any hair type. No.3PLUS Complete Repair Treatment comes in 100mL and 250mL, plus a Professional Backbar Size of 370mL. With No.3PLUS, OLAPLEX once again elevates what bond repair can be, proving that when science leads, transformation follows.

SAMANTHA CUSICK IS THE OWNER OF STĀ STUDIOS, OUR CURRENT PROFESSIONAL SUSTAINABLE SALON OF THE YEAR 2025 WINNER (SPONSORED BY EASYDRY). EACH MONTH, SHE IS SHARING HER AWARD-WINNING BUSINESS TIPS WITH PRO HAIR READERS. HERE, SAMANTHA LOOKS AT HOW TO TURN TIME INTO MONEY AT THE BACKWASH.
Every salon owner knows the pressure of a packed schedule. You’re managing time, balancing margins and constantly looking for ways to grow revenue without asking more of your team or your clients. So, what if I told you that one of the biggest untapped opportunities in your business is already sitting right in the middle of every single appointment? The backwash! Just hear me out...
We tend to think of the backwash as a functional moment, just a necessary step between the consultation and the cut. But actually, it’s one of the most strategically powerful touchpoints in the entire salon journey. Your client is relaxed, they’re away from their phone, they’re completely in your hands and they’re already thinking about their hair. You have their full attention. That is rare... and it’s worth using it well.

more likely to say yes to a ‘bond-strengthening upgrade that helps your colour last longer and reduces breakage’ than they are to an ‘add-on treatment’. Same service, completely different perception. Menu engineering isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s one of the most straightforward ways to increase your average ticket value without adding a single extra minute to the appointment.
Today’s clients are more ingredient savvy and product aware than ever before. They’ve done the research, they’ve watched the videos, they know what bond builders are and why they matter. That means they’re not just open to a conversation about treatments; they’re actually receptive to it... but only when it’s done right. And the backwash is exactly the right moment to do it.
My approach has always been to keep it educational rather than transactional. I’m not trying to sell anything; I’m explaining what the treatment does, why I’m using it and how it’s going to support their specific hair goals. When a client understands the function of what’s going on their hair and why it’s relevant to them personally, the decision to take it home isn’t a purchase, it’s just a logical next step.
That shift in framing matters more than people realise, and it connects directly to how you build your treatment menu. Language is everything at the backwash –a client is far
“When a client understands the function of what’s going on their hair and why it’s relevant to them personally, the decision to take it home isn’t a purchase, it’s just a logical next step.”
Convenience is also a massive purchasing driver right now, and that plays right into the backwash opportunity. Clients want results, but they don’t want complexity. Treatments that are quick, targeted and visibly effective are exactly what people are looking for. Working with OLAPLEX, I’ve had a front row seat to how this has evolved. The No.3PLUS reformulation is a brilliant example of a product built for this exact moment – three minutes at the backwash, immediate results and a natural bridge into the conversation about maintaining that at home.
Because that’s the other thing the backwash gives you –it’s not just a revenue opportunity in the chair; it’s the starting point for your retail conversation. When a client feels the difference for themselves, recommending the product to take home doesn’t feel like selling; it feels like looking after them. And that kind of trust is what builds long-term retention.
The backwash is one of the few moments in an appointment where experience, education and results can genuinely come together all at once. The salons that are making the most of it aren’t just seeing a boost in treatment uptake or retail sales, but they’re building the kind of client relationships that keep people coming back.
Remember, it’s not about adding more to the appointment; it’s about being smarter with the time you already have.

“I created this look using Schwarzkopf Professional’s Polychrome service, adapting it to suit the individual and the vision of the structured cut. The inspiration was a cool, sleek bob with a twist, all using the new BLONDME Glow Toners
To achieve this look, I used a combination of 9-19 Ice-Irisé and 9.5-81 Strawberry in a slice technique around the head, alternating tones. On the rest of the hair, I applied 10-51 Frosty Gold, then went back on top with 7-01 Glossed Cedar at the root with a half-inch drop into the haircut. Once developed, I softened and blended the colours with 0-00 Clear.

The lift was achieved pre-tone using the BLONDME 9+ Lightener with a classic fine weave, enhanced with the Clay Lightener applied freehand. The haircut itself was a classic bob, and my model was French, who inspired the overall look. Styled into a cool, sleek bob with a curved fringe and softened edges, the final look really lets the colour glow.”

BROOKE EVANS IS OUR PROFESSIONAL FREELANCE HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR 2025 AT THE PRO HAIR AWARDS – SPONSORED BY THE FREELANCE SUITE. IN AN EXCLUSIVE SERIES WITH US, SHE DISSECTS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BECOMING AN INDEPENDENT STYLIST. THIS MONTH, BROOKE BREAKS DOWN THE TRUE SELF-EMPLOYED MODEL.
The concept of true self-employment within the hairdressing industry has become an increasingly important topic, and it’s one that’s often misunderstood. For many stylists and salon owners, the shift from traditional employment to a self-employed structure offers flexibility, independence and financial opportunity. However, it also comes with a significant level of responsibility and, importantly, legal scrutiny. The line between genuine self-employment and disguised employment is a grey area, and one that must be navigated carefully.
A true self-employed model means that you are entirely your own boss. This goes far beyond simply renting a chair or working on a freelance basis. A genuinely self-employed hairdresser operates as an independent business within a salon environment – maintaining full control over how you work, what you charge and how you run your day-to-day business.

One of the most important factors in defining true self-employment is autonomy. As a self-employed stylist, you have complete freedom over the days and hours that you work; there should be no obligation to adhere to a rota set by a salon and no restrictions on taking time off. Equally, you should be able to choose the products you use, how much you charge and which clients you take on.
Financial control is another key indicator. In a true self-employed model, all income should be paid directly to you and not through the salon you work from. This distinction is crucial, as any involvement in handling or controlling a stylist’s earnings can blur the lines between self-employment and employment. You are also responsible for managing your own taxes, National Insurance contributions and financial records.
While a salon may have overarching guidelines relating to health and safety or brand standards, as a self-employed stylist, you should have your own business policies. This includes areas such as cancellation terms, pricing structures and client management.
“As a self-employed stylist, you have complete freedom over the days and hours that you work; there should be no obligation to adhere to a rota set by a salon and no restrictions on taking time off.”
Another defining feature is access and control of the workspace. A truly self-employed stylist typically has a level of independence within the salon, often including their own set of keys and the freedom to come and go as they please. While this may vary depending on the set-up, restricted access or excessive control from a salon owner can be a red flag. Employment status is not determined by a single factor, but by an accumulation of indicators. Even if you appear to operate independently in some areas, the presence of multiple controls or restrictions imposed by the salon can point towards disguised employment. This is where issues can arise. Disguised employment occurs when a stylist is labelled as self-employed, but is treated, in practice, like an employee. This can include being required to work set hours, follow strict salon policies, use specific products or have limited control over pricing and clients. In these situations, you may be entitled to employment rights such as holiday pay, sick pay and other benefits.
For anyone considering or currently working under a self-employed model, it is essential to ensure that the structure is compliant. I would strongly recommend seeking legal advice to understand your position and make the transition correctly. It is also vital to refer to official government guidance, which outlines the criteria used to determine employment status.
Looking ahead, I think the industry is likely to see increased scrutiny in this area. More salons are exploring alternative working models and stylists are seeking flexibility, so ensuring compliance will become even more important.
Ultimately, a true self-employed model offers freedom, control and the opportunity to build a personal brand within a salon setting. However, it must be approached with care, clarity and a full understanding of the legal framework. Getting it right not only protects your business, but it also ensures long-term sustainability in our ever-evolving industry.
AS MORE AND MORE STYLISTS ARE CHOOSING TO GO SOLO AND ENJOY THE FREEDOM OF SELF-EMPLOYMENT, THE TRADITIONAL SALON MODEL IS UNDERGOING A PROFOUND TRANSFORMATION. DRIVEN BY A DESIRE OF GREATER AUTONOMY AND A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE, THESE INDEPENDENT PROFESSIONALS ARE REDEFINING THE INDUSTRY. NEXT IN THE SERIES, WE SPEAK TO , OWNER OF LUKAS PAYNE HAIR STUDIO, ABOUT HIS SOLO MOVE.
What was the moment you realised working solo might actually suit you better than being in a team or salon?
There wasn’t one single moment; it was more of a gradual realisation. After working in salons where owners tried to control how I worked, pushed me to work faster and created a stressful environment, I started to notice how much I valued having creative freedom and building deeper relationships with my clients. I loved the industry, but I didn’t always love the environment. When I began working more independently, I felt more in control, more focused and more connected to my purpose. That’s when I realised that working solo wasn’t about being alone; it was about working in a way that truly suited who I am.
What fears or doubts did you have before going out on your own?

My biggest fear was stability – wondering if I’d have enough clients, enough income and enough security. I hadn’t worked in salons for very long before becoming self-employed, so I often questioned whether I was truly ready or if I was moving too fast. I also worried about whether people would still take me seriously without a ‘big salon name’ behind me.
What’s the biggest thing you’ve gained creatively since working solo?
Freedom. Working solo has given me permission to trust my instincts again. I no longer have to fit into someone else’s systems, pricing structures or creative direction; I can experiment, evolve and really push myself creatively.
How has going solo changed the way you work with clients?
When clients sit in my chair now, they’re not just another appointment in a busy rota; they’re my priority. I have more time to listen, consult properly and really understand what they want and need. In salons, I was often expected to work on several clients at the same time, but working for myself means I can focus on one person at a time and offer a true VIP experience.
“It hasn’t
always
been easy
or beautiful
– and I’ve
missed working alongside other hairdressers at times
– but it has given me confidence, independence and a stronger belief in myself.”
What’s been the most surprising upside of working alone?
Running everything yourself teaches you resilience. You discover how strong, adaptable and capable you really are. I didn’t expect working solo to shape me as much as it has. It hasn’t always been easy or beautiful – and I’ve missed working alongside other hairdressers at times – but it has given me confidence, independence and a stronger belief in myself.
What’s one thing people don’t talk about enough when it comes to working alone in this industry?
The mental side of working alone. When you’re on your own, you don’t always have someone to instantly bounce ideas off, vent to or reassure you. You have to learn how to motivate yourself and manage pressure independently. People often talk about the freedom, but not enough about the responsibility. You’re the stylist, the manager, the marketeer and the problem-solver all in one.
Was there anything you had to unlearn after leaving a traditional set-up?
I had to unlearn the idea that I needed constant validation from managers or senior stylists to feel successful. In a traditional set-up, you’re used to being assessed all the time, but working solo taught me to trust my own judgement and experience.
Looking back now, what advice would you give to someone considering stepping out on their own?
After 12 years of working for myself as a solo hairdresser and now opening my own salon, my biggest advice is this: believe in yourself before you think you’re ‘ready’. You’ll never feel 100% ready, but growth happens when you take the leap. Most importantly, remember why you started. If your heart is in it, you’ll always find a way to make it work.

The Look: Peach Glow
Warm blondes are having a refined revival. This luminous Peach Glow look blends soft apricot and rose reflections into a clean blonde base, creating depth, shine and a natural glow that shifts beautifully with the light.

Step 1: Prep & Section
Apply CC2 to protect the scalp and ensure an even result. Section the hair as shown, preparing for controlled, consistent colour placement.
Step 2: Build the Base & Dimension
Starting at the nape, take a circular section.
Apply: Colour A (Roots): PCC 8.0 + PCC Smart Lift 10.4 (1:1) + Cream Developer 6% (1:1)
Through the lengths and ends, alternate:
Colour B: PCC Smart Lift 10.4 + CREA-MIX 0.66 (30:1) + Cream Developer 9% (1:1)
Colour C: PCC Smart Lift 10.76 + CREA-MIX 0.66 (30:1) + Cream Developer 9% (1:1)
Step 3: Refine the Top Section

Work upwards, alternating Colour B and Colour C through the mid-lengths and ends to create soft tonal variation and movement.

At the top, create a zigzag parting to diffuse the colour placement. Apply Colour A to the roots, then alternate Colour B and Colour C through the lengths within the zigzag for a seamless, multi-dimensional finish. Process for 45 minutes, then rinse and cleanse using the Blonde Expert Insta Strong range to strengthen and enhance shine.

Step 4: Cut the Shape
Comb the hair smooth and elevate the back section to create a clean, blunt baseline. Slightly over-direct the sides back to maintain length towards the front, then cut to match your guideline. Allow the hair to fall naturally and refine the outline for a sharp, one-length finish that supports the colour and enhances shine.
Step 5: Style & Finish
Apply INDOLA Light Mousse to damp hair. Blow-dry using a round brush, directing the hair back from the face to create a smooth, polished surface with controlled root direction. Once fully dry, create soft waves using a tong, then gently brush through to blend into a soft, flowing shape. Finish with INDOLA Flexible Hairspray for a touchable hold that maintains movement and shine.
Prepare and protect with Blonde Expert Insta Strong Restoring Spray before colouring. After the service, cleanse and strengthen with the Blonde ExpertInsta Strong range to maintain condition and shine. For styling, use INDOLA Light Mousse to build volume and polish, then finish with Flexible Hairspray flexible hold and natural movement.

“I want to go lighter, but I don’t want to use bleach. Is that possible?”
You can absolutely go lighter without using bleach, as long as we are lifting natural hair that’s not previously been coloured. The new PCC Smart Lifts from INDOLA work best on bases 6 and above –meaning most people can get a gorgeous blonde result using no bleach at all. They also tone as they lift, so you can choose if you want to have a peachy tone or a cooler ashy or cream blonde.
“Is there a gentler way to lighten my hair without compromising condition?”
The PCC Smart Lifts are so gentle on the hair. The built-in Bonding Technology in the product actually means your hair will be softer and shinier than before!

Revlon Professional Unveils FUS3: A New Era of Cool Colour

Revlon Professional has launched FUS3, a next-generation, cool-tone colour technology designed to tackle a common colouring challenge: maintaining true, cool shades without unwanted warmth.

Developed with colourists in mind, FUS3 introduces six new cool-brown shades that stay visibly cooler for up to 10 weeks, helping clients maintain that ‘fresh-from-the-chair’ finish for longer.
At its core is a new tri-pigment system, engineered to hold tone more effectively within the hair and reduce the fade that typically leads to brassiness. The result? Richer brown hues, more vibrant cool tones and a deeper colour intensity that evolves beautifully over time.

With versatility at its heart, FUS3 supports a range of in-demand techniques, from soft grey blending to glossy ‘cold brew’ brunettes, while also offering reliable white hair coverage. No more washout. Coolness that lasts. Before After No more washout. Coolness that lasts.

THEY SAY NEVER MEET YOUR HEROES. WE SAY: DO.
MY HAIR HERO IS A REGULAR PRO HAIR FEATURE THAT BRINGS TOGETHER TWO WORLDS OF HAIRDRESSING TALENT FOR ONE HONEST, UNFILTERED CONVERSATION. IN EACH ISSUE, WE INVITE SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE HAIRDRESSING FACES TO SIT DOWN WITH THE INDIVIDUAL WHO HAS SHAPED THEIR CREATIVE JOURNEY FOR A CONVERSATION THEY’VE WAITED THEIR WHOLE CAREER TO HAVE...

Jake: Firstly, I just want to say thank you so much for coming down, it genuinely means a massive amount. You unintentionally inspired me throughout my early journey –from a young age, I knew there was more to hair than just cutting, and you were one of the people I saw leading the way.
What we’re building here at No Bad Days is about real people and real conversations. If you create enough space for people, they will talk and open up, and sometimes that can literally save lives. You’ve been championing this for years, and what you’ve built with Haircuts4Homeless goes way beyond a chair and a pair of clippers; you’ve inspired a whole generation to continue that work long after you. So, from everyone in the industry, thank you.
Stewart: You’ve made me cry already! Honestly. You don’t really take time to look at what you’re doing; you just do it. When someone reflects it back to you like that, it hits you. I’m 64 this year and my son’s turning 30, so we’re at opposite ends of the journey. At this stage of life, you start thinking about legacy. I still intend to stay busy for as long as I can, but knowing you’ve made an impact and that others will carry it forward… that means everything. I’m really grateful you said that.
Jake: That means a lot to hear. And I think it’s important that we say these things out loud while people are here to hear them. Let’s go back to the beginning – when did you realise you needed to do something bigger than cutting hair?
I’m a former drunk and drug-taker from Essex, and I found myself in Windsor Castle receiving an MBE. Of course, I feel like an imposter! If you ever lose that feeling completely, something’s probably wrong.
Stewart: It wasn’t planned at all – the best things rarely are! I’m 20 years sober this year, and at the time I was about nine years sober. A friend and I used to visit The Salvation Army on Mondays to talk to people about addiction and recovery. Then I saw Mark Bustos in America doing street makeovers, and nothing like that really existed in the UK. I thought, ‘Next week I’ll take my kit – if anyone wants a haircut, I’ll do one.’ At that point, I’d been a salon owner for 25 years and, if I’m honest, I’d fallen out of love with it. I was tired of the High Street and tired of feeling like an unpaid tax collector. I’d lost my purpose.
That first Monday, one guy finally trusted me enough to sit in the chair. I cut his hair and the gratitude he showed took me straight back to being a trainee – that fire in your stomach when you first fall in love with the craft. In that moment, I fell in love with hairdressing again. I saw the real power of what we do.
Jake: That’s incredible. It’s like the industry gave you a career, and then the people gave you your purpose back.
Stewart: Exactly that.
Jake: The next question throws people off a little bit, but I always love asking it! Do you feel like you’ve become the adult you once needed?
Stewart: 100%. But not intentionally. Recovery changed my life – without it, I probably wouldn’t even be alive. I remember sitting in my swimming pool one summer – big ego, big cigar, big glass of brandy – and thinking of ten different ways to kill myself. I had everything I thought I wanted, but I felt empty and lonely. That taught me something important: achievements and possessions won’t give you happiness. Aspire, achieve, enjoy success, but don’t base your happiness on it.
Jake: That’s such a powerful thing to say, especially in an industry where success can look very shiny from the outside. So, what can a haircut give someone beyond the haircut itself?
Stewart: Respect. Self-esteem. Identity. Human connection. It can give someone their identity back. We touch people, literally. That breaks down the invisible barrier we all carry. For someone who hasn’t had human contact in months, that connection is powerful. I remember a big, tough guy who didn’t want photos. After I finished, I showed him the mirror and he had tears in his eyes. I said, “That’s you, mate.” It was like he’d met himself again.
Jake: It’s mad how something we sometimes see as routine can be life-changing for

brought forward so my mum – who was terminally ill – could see it. I have a photo of her in hospital holding my medal. That means everything.
Jake: That must be such a special memory to have and obviously, that’s a pretty high point in your life to receive that. What’s been the heaviest part of the journey?
Stewart: Losing my salon. I’d run it for 30 years and the rent doubled. Eventually, we had to close, and overnight my retirement disappeared. I owed around £60,000. It felt like a bereavement. The same day I turned the lights off for the last time, a national TV advert aired featuring Haircuts4Homeless. The worst and best day of my life, all at once. Losing the salon forced me fully into this work.
We’ve
got to stop being so selfish. I love this industry, but a lot of it is self-promotion. There’s a hell of a lot of good people in it, but as a collective, we could do so much more. Since the pandemic, volunteer numbers have dropped dramatically. We ask for two hours a month.
If you can’t give two hours to help others, you need to look at yourself.
someone else. Do you still feel imposter syndrome?
Stewart: Every single day. I’m a former drunk and drug-taker from Essex, and I found myself in Windsor Castle receiving an MBE. Of course, I feel like an imposter! If you ever lose that feeling completely, something’s probably wrong.
Jake: I actually think that humility is part of why people connect with you. What did the MBE mean to you when you got home?
Stewart: I’m proud because it shows people that you can change your life at any age. If an old drunk from Essex can receive an MBE, anyone can turn their life around! One of the most special parts was getting the ceremony
Jake: That’s such a brutal but powerful turning point. Sometimes the thing that feels like the end is actually the beginning. You obviously deal with a lot of people’s mental health, and I guess in the field that you work in with homelessness, there’s probably quite a lot of bad mental health there. You’re dealing with that all day long, so what’s your support system that gets you through each day?
Stewart: My family. Without them, I wouldn’t be here. I’ve been on an NHS waiting list for PTSD therapy for three years –if someone in my position struggles to access support, imagine what it’s like for someone sleeping in a tent. It’s not good enough.
Jake: What do you think the hair industry can do to help?
Stewart: That’s a good one, because I’ve got to say something bad about the industry that I love. We’ve got to stop being so selfish. Helping people fills you with gratitude. After volunteering, I go home and stand in the shower thinking how lucky I am to even have one!
Jake: What do you hope your legacy will be?
Stewart: That the work continues after me. That’s all. If the next generation carries the flag and keeps helping people, I’ll be happy.
Jake: I think that legacy is already happening. Thank you so much for coming today, and for everything you’ve done for this industry and beyond.
How would you describe the design of your salon?
The design of our salon is contemporary yet classic, fusing together different textures and materials to create a relaxing and welcoming interior for our clients and team. We’ve opted for a contrast of light and dark, working with a palette of bright white, subtle browns and luxury finishes.
The stations are perfectly positioned on each side of the salon, allowing us to have a ‘runway’ of space throughout the centre, with the backwash towards the back of the salon. We felt this space was the perfect position for the backwash, with slightly more subtle lighting and a quieter area.
Do you have any curated pieces or special features in the salon?
One of the most luxurious features we’ve added to the salon is our luxury electric massage backwash chairs. We wanted to make this an experience for our clients and ensure they receive a luxurious and comfortable service, setting the relaxing mood for the overall appointment.
How have you embraced sustainability within your design?
Within both the design and the business as a whole, we are actively doing our best to become more sustainable and make better choices every day. Within the salon, we have opted for LED lighting (which is 75% more efficient) and integrated sustainable recycling which is perfectly positioned behind the backwash area.
Do you have a dress code for your team?
The dress code for our team is very much on par with the majority of hairdressing salons in the UK and globally: we ask our team to always wear black or white and to dress smart. We are professionals, providing a high standard of service to our clients, and it is important that we portray this correctly. It is extremely vital to always give the right impression, both to those engaging with the services and to passers-by looking in.

Give us three words that reflect the vibe of your salon. Contemporary. Classic. Welcoming.

What’s the reason you fell in love with hairdressing?
To be honest, it wasn’t a career that had ever even crossed my mind! But when I met my wife, Lara (who was a hairdresser), I just loved her passion for the industry. It was her energy that really got me hooked.
What’s the most treasured item in your kitbag?
My scissor case. It was my father’s shaving case, and he gave it to me when I was 16 and joined the Merchant Navy. It became my scissor case when I started hairdressing, and it has been everywhere I’ve worked since.
What’s the most memorable moment in your career so far?
That’s a difficult one as hairdressing gives you so many memorable moments!

What’s your favourite look you have created?
2013 LFW for Haizhen Wang. It wasn’t ever going to set the world alight, but it came from a technique thought up by our daughter that redefined the way I dressed a ponytail.
What’s your go-to hair product right now?
Sebastian Professional Potion 9. It’s been my go-to for the last 30 years!
What’s your go-to takeaway order?

What’s your drink of choice at the bar?
I enjoy a classic Italian Crodino over ice – I don’t drink alcohol, so you often find choice is a bit limited. I’m happy with just a sparkling water and great company!

I’m a classic cod and chips person. Our local chippy overlooks the sea, and their catch is always local and fresh. Simple, but incredible quality.

What’s the last thing you bought?
I just got myself a new razor from Leaf Scissors. Whoop! Love it! I use a blade often, and the Leaf design is so lovely in my hand.
What’s your top binge-watch recommendation?
I don’t watch many series on TV –I tend to watch sport instead (poor Lara!). Although, I did recently binge my way through Slow Horses after reading the books. Absolutely brilliant!
What’s your go-to karaoke song?
American Pie! It’s one of those songs that everyone knows the words to, so my worse-than-average voice is drowned out! Lara forces(ish) me into singing Islands in the Stream, but I’m not allowed to sound better than her. Love a bit of Dolly and Kenny!
AS HE STEPS INTO THE ROLE OF PRESIDENT OF THE FELLOWSHIP FOR BRITISH HAIRDRESSING, SIMON SHAW BRINGS WITH HIM DECADES OF EXPERIENCE, A SHARP EYE FOR DETAIL AND A REFRESHINGLY GROUNDED SENSE OF HUMOUR. WE CAUGHT UP WITH HIM TO TALK LEADERSHIP, OPINIONS AND THE FUTURE OF THE FELLOWSHIP.
SIMON ON: THE FELLOWSHIP’S ROLE TODAY
Q
What do you think The Fellowship means to the industry in 2026?
The Fellowship is the crème de la crème of British hairdressing. We will continue to do everything we do to the highest level and accomplish what we set out to do. We’ll come out bigger, better and stronger – growing our membership and providing new opportunities for our sponsors and members.
Q What’s one assumption about The Fellowship you’d like to challenge?
I want people to realise that The Fellowship is for everyone at every level and stage in their career.
Q What does a truly inclusive Fellowship look like to you? Exactly what you see today, but on a much larger scale.
Q What kind of president do you not want to be?
I will be a modern-thinking, strong leader who just gets on with it. I want to be in tune with business and creativity, making everyone involved with The Fellowship feel good.
SIMON ON: HIS VISION AND IMPACT
Q Is your approach going to be more evolution or gentle disruption? Controlled expansion with zero disruption.
Q What’s one thing the industry isn’t talking about enough right now?
Setting up businesses to be commercially successful. A business without profit is like a body without a soul.
Q If you could solve one ongoing challenge through The Fellowship, what would it be?
Change the industry’s mentality towards apprenticeships – from both the salon owner and apprentice’s POV.
Q What’s one small change that could make a big difference to members?
Focus on education – more growth, more learning. For me, you can never stop developing your skills. If you learn something each day, you become better each day.
Q The next generation has very different expectations –how are you going to keep them inspired through The Fellowship?
By listening, understanding and setting solid foundations for establishing successful careers. And by giving them access to the best of British hairdressing.
Q How are you going to handle differing opinions in such a passionate industry?
I’m going to listen and engage with all levels of the industry and take a balanced, harmonised approach to improvement and respect.

Q Is there a risk that the industry holds on to tradition too tightly?
It’s important for us to understand where we came from in order to understand where we’re going.
Q
Be honest –any ‘presidential perks’ you’re looking forward to?
The honour of being the President of The Fellowship and giving back at the highest level.
Q If The Fellowship had a motto for your presidency, what would it be?
We’re awesome. With everything you do, do it with purpose.
SIMON ON: LOOKING AHEAD
Q What do you want your presidency to feel like for members?
I want it to feel like a Fellowship family – inclusive, fun and full of opportunities for our members. I want everyone to be part of it.
Q When people look back at your time as president, what do you hope they will say?
I would like them to admirewhat we’ve accomplished, and recognise the growth that has been implemented throughout the two years. I hope to leave a legacy that can continue to develop.
