Now in its third generation, JOSH and SOPHIE-ROSE GOLDSWORTHY are leading the GOLDSWORTHY’S HAIRDRESSING brand into the future with passion, creativity and a commitment to exceptional client experience. Supported by L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL by their side, this award-winning salon group continues to champion modern hairdressing through innovation, education and expert craftsmanship.

A Partnership Styled for SUCCESS

AS THIS YEAR IS THE 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF GOLDSWORTHY’S HAIRDRESSING, CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH YOUR FAMILY’S JOURNEY TO BECOMING THE AWARD-WINNING SALON GROUP YOU ARE TODAY?

Founded in 1961 by our grandparents, Peter and Peggy Goldsworthy, Goldsworthy’s Hairdressing began as a single salon built on exceptional standards, luxury service and a strong reputation within our local town.

The second generation saw our father Steven Goldsworthy, mother Tracy and aunt Nicola take the business into a new era. Alongside growing the salon group, Steven established the Goldsworthy name within the wider hair industry through competition work and major award success, including earning a place in the British Hairdressing Awards Hall of Fame.

As the third generation, we have continued evolving the brand through session styling, photographic collections, education and stage work, bringing a more editorial and creative direction to the business while still honouring the legacy and values Goldsworthy’s was built on.

AS THE BROTHER AND SISTER DUO NOW LEADING GOLDWORTHY’S INTO THE FUTURE, WHAT QUALITIES DO YOU BOTH BRING TO THIS PARTNERSHIP?

Working together as siblings definitely helps. We’ve grown up together in the industry and we’re comfortable enough to be honest with each other, even if that occasionally means a bit of shouting during creative debates! The difference is we don’t take it personally, and it usually leads to better ideas in the end.

We also naturally divide roles when it comes to planning and projects. Josh is usually ‘Captain of Creative’, focusing on the overall artistic direction, while Sophie is ‘Captain of Communications and Logistics’, keeping everything structured, organised and moving forward. When we’re working on a show, shoot or collection, we’ll each volunteer to ‘captain’ different areas, which takes the pressure off and allows us to really focus on our strengths.

WHAT HAS BEEN MOST INSTRUMENTAL IN THE GROWTH AND EVOLUTION OF YOUR BUSINESS?

Working with L’Oréal Professionnel has been an intentional and important partnership for us. When we choose a brand to align with, we always look for two things: exceptional product quality and genuine opportunities for growth and development as artists. With L’Oréal Professionnel, we consistently get both, without compromise.

The L’Oréal Professionnelteam are some of the best people we’ve ever worked with. They’re supportive of our creative vision, our needs as a salon group and our development as individual artists. That level of backing is invaluable, whether we’re working in-salon, on shoots or on stage. The products themselves allow us to create exactly the kind of high-quality, expressive hair we’re known for, and the aesthetic of L’Oréal Professionnel sits perfectly alongside our own – producing beautiful, high-quality, wearable hair. It’s a partnership that not only supports and elevates our day-to-day salon work, but also gives us the platform to share our creativity on a much wider stage.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL PRODUCT TO WORK WITH?

We’ve been loving the new L’Oréal Professionnel Dia Light and Hyaluronic Glossing. The innovative acidic gloss technology, combined with hyaluronic acid, leaves the hair feeling incredibly healthy while delivering a reflective, expensive-looking finish. The shade range is stunning too, making it perfect for the soft, seamless blondes and glossy colour work we love to create in the salon. The Hyaluronic Glossing Services have been a real game changer for growing our business, offering a perfect way to elevate client results in between appointments, while driving demand for high-shine, healthy-looking colour.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAVE ALLOWED YOU TO TAKE YOUR BUSINESS TO THE NEXT LEVEL?

Working with L’Oréal Professionnelhas opened up a huge range of opportunities for us, both creatively and professionally . It’s allowed us to be involved in launching new colour shades, as well as developing and de monstrating colouring techniques to take into both education and salon work. We’ve also had the chance to present on major industry stages, which has been incredible for sharing our work on a wider platform. Alongside that, it’s taken us international – from educating salons from Indonesia, in Dublin and across the Nordics. Overall, working with different teams and cultures has been hugely inspiring, and it has really broadened our perspective as artists. Working with L’Oréal Professionnel has also led to a great deal of press features, magazine spreads and cover work, all helping us to showcase the Goldsworthy’s creative identity beyond the salon and into the wider industry.

YOU JUST DID THE L’ORÉAL COLOUR TROPHY GRAND FINAL ARTISTIC SHOW IN DUBLIN. WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM FOR THIS?

For the L’OréalColour Trophy Dublin Show, we drew inspiration from our own heritage. As we celebrate our 65th year, we wanted to reflect on Goldsworthy’s history and the iconic fashion moments across the decades, creating a concept that honoured our legacy while still pushing a forward-thinking, fashion-led narrative. We began by exploring 65 years of archived film, photography and press cuttings we’ve collected, which formed the foundation of the creative direction. Our show, entitled LEGACY, was a powerful moment to showcase the Goldsworthy’s heritage on one of the largest platforms in Ireland – the L’Oréal Colour Trophy Grand Final stage.

HOW DO YOU EMPOWER YOUR TEAM?

Education is at the heart of Goldsworthy’s, and we’re really proud that all of our stylists are homegrown through our own training academy. We take school leavers through a structured training journey, developing both their technical ability and creative confidence from the ground up.

“Working with L’Oréal Professionnel has been an intentional and important partnership for us. When we choose a brand to align with, we always look for two things: exceptional product quality and genuine opportunities for growth and development as artists. With L’Oréal

We heavily utilise the education from L’Oréal Professionnel too. Their online platform, L’Oréal Professionnel ACCESS, is invaluable for product knowledge and technique, and their field educators regularly come into our academy and salons to work directly with both our learners and our full team. We also make full use of L’Oréal Professionnel’s academy courses, particularly the Colour Specialist programme, which has been incredibly valuable in elevating our team’s technical skills and confidence

What’s more, as a L’Oréal Professionnel Portfolio salon, our team benefits from exclusive access to a wide range of backstage opportunities, including working at London Fashion Week in collaboration with Central Saint Martins, as well as at the V&A and Graduate Fashion Week, among many others. These experiences are invaluable in helping to develop our team, fuel creativity and continually grow their technical and creative skills.

WHAT ARE YOUR PROUDEST MOMENTS IN HAIRDRESSING SO FAR?

For Josh, winning Professional Hairdresser of the Year 2025 at the Pro Hair Awards was a real standout moment. Being a finalist alongside names he has looked up to throughout his career made it incredibly surreal, and to take the title in that company felt like a huge personal and professional milestone. We’re also really proud to have achieved two wins at the L’OréalColour Trophy since joining five years ago, which has been a huge milestone for us creatively as a team.

More than anything, these are the moments that stand out for us: personal achievement, creative opportunity and watching the next generation of our team grow in confidence and capability.

HOW IS GOLDSWORTHY’S HAIRDRESSING LOOKING TO THE FUTURE?

Goldsworthy’s is very much focused on evolving while staying true to our roots as a family-led, creative salon group. Looking ahead, we’re committed to growing our education platform, continuing to develop our academy and pushing our creative work further.

A vital part of that future is developing our next generation of artistic talent within the team. We have younger stylists who are really keen to step into the kind of creative work we do, and we’re actively mentoring and supporting them into that space. We’ve also been incredibly proud to see one of our team recently gain a place on the L’Oréal Professionnel ID Artist Programme, which is a two-year mentorship that offers amazing creative and educational development. It’s a real reflection of the direction we want to keep moving in –building opportunity from within while continuing to grow creatively as a group. Our partnership with L’Oréal Professionnel continues to support that journey, giving our team access to world-class education, inspiration and progression pathways.

IT’S A WIN WIN!

As the countdown to the Pro Hair Awards 2026 begins, it’s worth asking - what does winning really mean?

Of course, there’s the trophy, the recognition and the licence to celebrate, but the true value of a Pro Hair Award goes far beyond a place on the shelf; it tells clients, peers and potential team members that you’re among the very best in the business. It strengthens your reputation, boosts credibility and helps you and your salon stand out in a competitive market. For clients, an award-winning salon is a destination. For stylists looking for their next work opportunity, it’s a place they want to be part of.

The impact is felt in-house too. Entering awards gives your team something to strive for, creating a sense of pride, motivation and shared achievement. Even reaching finalist status is a powerful endorsement of the talent and dedication within your salon.

Then there’s the exposure. Our Pro Hair Award winners are celebrated across our platforms, opening doors to valuable publicity and local press coverage to showcase the creativity and professionalism that set them apart. Just look at Josh Goldsworthy, our Professional Hairdresser of the Year 2025 – you can read what he has to say opposite.

And, of course, there’s the celebration itself. The Pro Hair Awards Live Final is more than an awards ceremony; it’s a chance to bring your team together, recognise their hard work and spend an inspirational evening among the industry’s most talented professionals, brands and creatives.

GuestLetter From...

JOSH GOLDSWORTHY

PROFESSIONAL

OF THE YEAR 2025

A Letter to My Younger Self

You probably think success in hairdressing looks like stages, awards and photoshoots. You probably think the people on those platforms must have it all figured out. But what you don’t see yet are the late nights. The pressure. The self-doubt. The failed collections. The fear of not being good enough, even when people tell you that you are.

You don’t yet understand how much this industry will ask of you, but you also don’t realise how much it will give back. One day, hairdressing will take you around the world. It will introduce you to artists, mentors and lifelong friends. It will give you purpose and allow you to create something bigger than yourself. But most importantly, it will teach you who you are.

This year marks 20 years since you first entered the industry, and 65 years of your family business – something that will come to mean more to you with every passing year.

Right now, you probably think success is about making your own name. And it is. But, eventually, you’ll realise the real challenge is honouring what came before you whilst still moving it forward in your own voice.

There will be moments you want to quit. Moments where comparison steals your confidence. Moments where you question whether creativity is enough.

Keep going anyway.

You’ll face rejection. Collections won’t always land. You’ll doubt yourself more than you admit. And even after the successes come, part of you will still wonder if it’s enough.

But every late night, every sacrifice, every setback and small breakthrough is shaping not only the hairdresser you become, but the person you become too. You’re not just building a career; you’re building your own identity within a

legacy that already existed long before you arrived.

The awards will mean something, they absolutely should. They represent years of sacrifice, creativity, risk and resilience that nobody else fully sees. Milestones in a journey that, at times, felt impossible.

But what you’ll remember most is who you shared it with. The teams. The people. The feeling of creating something that once only existed in your head.

And strangely, one of the greatest things to ever happen to you will be the moment your sister tells you she wants to join the family business.

You’ll think it’s a terrible idea. You’ll wonder how the two of you could ever work together creatively without driving each other insane. But you’ll be wrong.

Building collections together, travelling the world together and standing on stages together will become some of the proudest moments of your career, and your life.

You’ll realise the best creative partnerships are built on trust, honesty and shared obsession. You’ll travel the world, build a business and stand on stages you once dreamed of, achieving more than the younger version of you thought

And somewhere amongst the chaos of building a career, you’ll build a life you’re proud of too.

But the thing you’ll become proudest of is helping shape an environment where creativity can thrive – for your team, your clients and the next generation walking into this industry.

That is the real legacy.

Keep creating.

Keep evolving.

And never lose the love for it.

TAYLOR BORTHWICK PROFESSIONAL YOUNG TALENT OF THE YEAR 2025

“My hairdressing journey so far has been a bit of a whirlwind. I started my apprenticeship just after Covid, which was such an uncertain time for everyone, but I threw myself into my training and was determined to make it count. I qualified in my Level 2 within a year and began building my own clientele while continuing through my Level 3.

Wanting to push myself creatively, I took a chance and entered the Revlon Professional Visionaries programme before I was fully qualified. It was a risk, but one that saw my career totally take off! I had a year-long mentorship with Mark Leeson and got the chance to work at London Fashion Week, Salon International and so much more. Since then, I’ve

What made you want to enter the Pro Hair Awards 2025?

The Pro Hair Awards always looked like such a cool event and a really supportive community to be part of. When I saw the Professional Young Talent of the Year category, I just knew I couldn’t miss the chance to enter. It felt like the perfect opportunity to push myself and be part of something exciting within the industry.

What does winning this award mean to you?

This award means so much to me because it really reflects how much I’ve achieved in such a short space of time. I never imagined that at 21 I’d be collecting trophies for doing something I genuinely love!

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to enter the Pro Hair Awards next year?

If you’re thinking about entering the Pro Hair Awards, just go for it! Don’t overthink it. Believe in yourself, back your work and be proud of your journey. These opportunities are so important – not just for exposure, but for growth. They push you out of your comfort zone and remind you of everything you’re capable of. It’s also a chance to look back and realise how far you’ve come.

Can you share any exciting plans you have for the coming months?

I’ve got a photoshoot coming up that I’m really excited about. We’re still in the process of developing the concept, but I already know it’s going to be something really special. I’ve also been given the opportunity to teach with Revlon for their 2026 Visionaries team, which is amazing. It’s something I’m really proud about and can’t wait to be a part of. It’s definitely shaping up to be a very exciting few months!

How has winning Professional Young Talent of the Year impacted your business and your clients?

Most memorable After Party moment? It has to be Rob Wood from Novo Cabelo singing Pink Pony Club. The whole room was up dancing like no one was watching! It was chaos (in the best way!) and such a fun moment that I won’t be forgetting anytime soon.

What was your favourite takeaway from the night?

Having my mum there to see me win Professional Young Talent of the Year meant everything to me.

Winning this award has really boosted my career. My clients love seeing my growth, and it’s given them even more confidence in me. The social media exposure has also helped bring in new clients, and it’s made them feel more at ease coming to a new salon.

Three words to describe the Live Final night? Unforgettable. Electric. Inspiring.

David Cassidy is the Founder of Palette & Bristle, a boutique salon in Hove known for its refined aesthetic, technical excellence and focus on luxury client experience. With a career spanning over two decades in the hair industry, David has built a reputation for highly bespoke hair extension work, specialising in seamless, natural-looking results that prioritise hair health. His approach combines technical precision with a deep understanding of colour, texture and hair integrity, allowing extensions to blend flawlessly with the client’s natural hair. Alongside working behind the chair, David is passionate about mentoring the next generation of stylists and developing training pathways within the salon.

What made you want to enter the Pro Hair Awards 2025?

Where have you put your trophy? It currently has pride of place on the reception desk. An artist friend made highly realistic (and slightly creepy!) dolls of me and my husband who are now standing guard over it.

The Pro Hair Awards are widely respected within the industry, and I felt it was the right moment to put my work forward. Extensions require a huge amount of technical skill and attention to detail, so it was exciting to have the opportunity to showcase that work on a national platform.

How did it feel when your name was announced as the winner of Professional Extensionist of the Year?

It was honestly surreal! You spend so much time focused on your clients and your craft, that you don’t often stop to reflect on it. Hearing my name called was a really proud moment –it was a reminder that all the dedication and attention to detail does get recognised.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to enter the Pro Hair Awards next year?

Enter. The process of preparing your submission alone is valuable because it forces you to reflect on your work and your standards. Be authentic, show your best work and don’t underestimate what you’ve achieved.

Can you share any exciting plans you have for the coming months?

We’re continuing to grow the team and develop the training side of the business, particularly around technical services like extensions and colour. I’m passionate about raising standards and helping younger stylists build strong technical foundations.

How has winning Professional Extensionist of the Year impacted your business and your clients?

It’s definitely strengthened client confidence. Many clients are investing in extensions for the first time, so having that level of recognition reassures them they’re in safe hands. It’s also brought new clients to the salon who are specifically seeking out extension specialists.

What was your favourite takeaway from the night?

The sense of community. Hairdressing can feel quite individual day-to-day, so it’s always great to come together and celebrate the industry as a whole.

Did you catch up with anyone you hadn’t seen in a long time?

A few familiar faces from earlier in my career which was really nice. The industry is smaller than people realise!

Most memorable After Party moment? Luckily, I remember it all well as I took it easy owing to an early flight to Ibiza the following day!

Who had the best moves on the

How did it feel when your name was announced as the first ever winner of The Pride of Pro Hair?

It was a really special moment. I felt proud, surprised and incredibly grateful. Being recognised in this way meant a lot, especially because the work I do is centred around helping people who often find haircuts extremely challenging.

What does winning this award mean to you?

It means a huge amount. The award represents recognition not just for me, but for the families and individuals I support every day. It shows that inclusion and community-focused work within barbering is being recognised and valued by the wider industry.

MONDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER

“Winning this opportunity for my girls to train with Carolyn has been incredible! Over the three days, they developed their consultation skills, explored colour placement and were encouraged to think creatively and push their boundaries.

The biggest impact, however, has been the confidence it’s given them – you can really see the difference in how they communicate, approach clients and express their ideas. It’s been amazing to watch the next generation grow into more assured, creative stylists who are excited about their future in hairdressing."

Shelly Whiston, Owner of Outshine Hairdressing

This year, Pro Hair has followed Carolyn Chapman through her exclusive ‘Be Your Best’ mentorship programme. As an international educator and colour expert with over 40 years in the industry, Carolyn strives to give back to the hairdressing world. Here, she offers up her time, free of charge, in order to support the future generation of hairdressers.

Carolyn has spent the last seven months training: Hannah and Olivia from Outshine Hairdressing in Brighton, and Issy, Macy, Abbi-Rose and Kiara from Rubies & Co. in Huddersfield. Where the two salons each undertook three sessions in total:

They looked at the importance of consistency within the craft, as well as the A-Z of the client experience.

Looking back on the programme, Carolyn says, “These young stylists have achieved so much over the three sessions we have been together, and I am so proud of them all. I have really loved working with each of them, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds!”

In the final session, ‘Consistency’, the stylists were given a thorough breakdown on the skills you need in order to become a successful hairdresser with a perfect column.

“Carolyn’s ability to nurture and elevate emerging talent is something very special, and it had a real impact on our team. We’re all incredibly grateful to have welcomed her into our salon! This is a programme that genuinely builds confidence, skill and future stars, so thank you Carolyn.”

TALKING HEADS:

Continuing our conversation for 2026, we ask experts up and down the country their thoughts on specific hair types, textures and treatments. This month, we have everything you need to know about thinning hair…

Thinning

Hair

JACK MEAD

HAIR TRANSFORMATION SPECIALIST

“Thinning hair during menopause is often dismissed as ‘just part of getting older’, but that’s not the full picture. Hormonal changes can absolutely affect hair density, texture and growth, but that doesn’t mean you just have to put up with it. I see so many women notice improvements when they focus on things like scalp health, nutrition, stress and the right products. Hair can always become stronger, fuller and healthier with the right support.”

STEPHEN HOPPER

SUPER STYLIST FOR REMI CACHET

“For clients with thinning hair, hair extensions can be a perfect way to regain hair confidence. When done correctly, they can be an instant way to add thickness and volume.

An in-person consultation is really important to properly assess how advanced the thinning is. Make sure you check the client’s natural density and overall hair condition, talking through any indications that may make extensions unsuitable. If extensions are the right choice, the main priority should always be protecting the natural hair. Choosing the right method and the right amount of hair is key – I always find that less is more as it creates a safer, more natural-looking result without overloading fragile areas Particularly when working with thinning hair, it is essential to use something lightweight and density matched to the client, in order for the hair to support the extension being applied. The goal is always to enhance the hair in a way that feels seamless, natural and safe.”

MELISSA TIMPERLEY

OWNER OF MELISSA

TIMPERLEY SALONS

“Thin hair is becoming increasingly common, influenced by a range of factors, such as weight-loss injections, new medications and health conditions. Because of this, it’s more important than ever to approach cutting techniques carefully, as poor cutting can easily make thinning hair appear even finer. When working with thin or thinning hair, several factors must be considered. Face shape plays a key role in determining the most flattering style, whilst hair texture will influence how the hair naturally falls and responds to different cutting techniques. Lifestyle is another important consideration. Understanding how often a client washes, styles or blow-dries their hair helps tailor a cut that is both manageable and lasting. Ultimately, a thoughtful, personalised approach is essential to ensure the cut enhances fullness rather than emphasises thinning.”

ROB WOOD

“Thinning hair and hair loss are often spoken about as if they are the same thing, but they can feel very different for clients. Thinning might mean reduced density, a wider parting, less volume through the crown or a scalp that feels more visible under certain lighting, whereas hair loss can be more advanced, more defined and sometimes linked to genetics, illness, trauma, alopecia or medical treatment. Either way, the emotional impact can be huge, and, as hair professionals, we have a responsibility to approach it with care. The first step should always be a proper consultation. We need to understand not just what is happening with the hair, but how the client feels about it.Some people with mild thinning are deeply affected, while others with more severe hair loss feel quite resilient, so listening is essential

There are lots of options to explore. For some clients, a different cut, colour placement, scalp care routine, volumising products or styling approach can make a real difference, whereas others may benefit from trichology advice, extensions, toppers, wigs or non-surgical hair systems. The key is not to push one single solution, but to guide the client towards what feels right for their lifestyle, budget and confidence. The goal should always be to restore, dignity and choice, while helping clients feel informed, supported and never ashamed of seeking help. Hair systems are one option, and they can be life changing, but they are part of a wider conversation.”

“Thinning hair has become a bigger concern for more women and men than ever before, with stress, hormones, ageing, lifestyle and everyday environmental factors all having an impact on hair health and density. Because of this, more clients are looking for products that not only help hair look fuller, but also support a healthier scalp and stronger strands long term

That’s why Nioxin has become our salon hero product for fine and thinning hair. Its targeted systems help reduce breakage, strengthen fragile strands and create the look of thicker, fuller hair from the very first use. Alongside the care systems, the brand also offers a styling range designed to give hair added volume and texture without weighing it down, making it ideal for fine hair that needs lift and movement.”

GRANT CARR

OWNER OF GARÇON

“We see a lot of clients struggling with thinning hair, and it’s actually something I’ve dealt with myself. Because I openly share my own journey and treatments on social media, I find clients often feel much more comfortable opening up about their own thinning-hair concerns too.

One of the first things I always recommend during a consultation is looking a little deeper into the cause. Hair thinning can sometimes be linked to hormones, stress, deficiencies or other health factors, so getting blood work done can be really important in understanding what’s going on.

For men especially, when the hairline starts thinning at the front, the instinct is usually to grow it longer to hide it. In my experience, however, that can often make it appear even thinner. I nearly always recommend keeping that area shorter and more blunt through the edges, as it creates the illusion of stronger, fuller density.”

KIERAN TUDOR

CO-FOUNDER OF CENTRED

“Thinning hair is rarely just a hair issue; it’s a signal. For me, it always starts at the root, quite literally. Supporting the scalp environment – such as with something like the En-Root Scalp Oil from CENTRED– helps to detoxify, rebalance and create the optimum conditions for healthy growth. Alongside that, internal support is key. Hair is non-essential tissue, so if the body is under stress or lacking nutrients, it will show here first That’s why I always recommend a consistent approach with targeted supplementation – like our Tender Love and Hair. It’s about nourishing the body in a way that’s specific to each client, from within.”

TOM SMITH CO-FOUNDER OF AEVUM SALON

“One of the biggest shifts I’m seeing with thinning hair is that clients are starting to understand it as something much more holistic. Hair thinning can obviously be genetic or hormonal, but stress and nervous system dysregulation play a huge role too. This is why, at AEVUM, we’ve integrated reflexology, acupuncture and stress-supportive treatments into the salon experience, alongside more advanced hair technologies too.

We work with things like the Calecim Advanced Hair System, K18 repair products, scalp-focused care and red light therapy from CurrentBody to help create a healthier environment for the hair long term. Clients want healthier, calmer and more supportive approaches that work with the hair rather than fighting against it ”

JOSH WOODMAN

DENMAN CREATIVE

“When it comes to cutting and colouring thinning hair, I tend to be really strategic about my approach. When cutting this hair type, I recommend keeping as much of a single length as possible, in order to retain a strong perimeter I also tend to take a large star section from the crown and square layer or face frame, just to create some body and height to prevent the hair from going flat.

For colouring thinning hair, a signature move of mine is to take a zig zag section of hair throughout the underneath of the head and take it all one shade darker than everywhere else – this gives the illusion of a thicker perimeter.”

ANNELIESE HESSE FOUNDER OF HUMANKIND HAIR AND QUALIFIED TRICHOLOGIST

“Because of the changing way we live our lives right now, we are seeing more and more people suffering from thinning hair. Globally, our diets are worsening overall, largely due to the rise in ultra-processed foods. Throw into this restrictive foods, fad diets and the improper use of weight-loss medication, and we see huge problems in hair shedding from the root Breakage mid-shaft, on the other hand, is caused by things such as heat and friction. People feel pressure to look a certain way (perhaps more than ever, thanks to social media), leading to an increased usage of irons, tongs, brushing and washing. This causes damage that results in breakage and the overall appearance of thinner hair. When it comes to colouring, in order to minimise the scalp from showing too much through thin hair, you should opt for hair colours similar to that of the skin. Darker skin = darker shades, lighter skin = lighter shades. This reduces contrast and blends effectively. That said, it’s important not to put extra stress on weak strands, so the use of lightening products should be carefully monitored.”

LLOYD COURT

BRIDGEEN KING

HAIR LOSS AND SCALP

EXPERT

“A thorough consultation should look at when the hair loss started, whether it has been gradual or sudden, family history, medical history, current medication, diet, stress levels and lifestyle. Sometimes, the hair itself is only part of the story, which is why I will often encourage clients to explore blood testing through their GP –including ferritin, thyroid function and hormonal markers –to help identify any underlying triggers.

For hair professionals, the key is not to diagnose beyond your scope, but to ask the right questions, observe carefully, signpost responsibly and offer practical, compassionate support. This might include scalp care advice, styling solutions, wig personalisation, referral pathways or working alongside medical professionals. The client approach should always be calm, informed and individual. Hair loss can have a huge emotional impact, so our role is not just technical; it is about restoring confidence, giving clients clarity and helping them feel seen at a moment when they may feel particularly vulnerable.”

CREATIVE DIRECTOR AT SEANHANNA WIMBLEDON “We are definitely seeing more hair thinning and hair loss in the salon at the moment. There are many reasons for this, but I think one of the main causes is people’s usage of GLP-1 medications. These don’t cause hair loss in themselves, but the associated weight loss really does affect hair thinning and hair loss, and this is something that not many people are aware of. When a client comes to us to express fear around their hair falling out, it’s really important to not only be compassionate, but to keep the conversation discreet and make sure that the client feels completely comfortable in the setting. If you don’t feel like you have the knowledge or the capabilities to deal with the issue, then referring it to someone else is always the best option.”

STEP TWO –CREATE A LISTENING CULTURE

START WITH THE CUSTOMER

IN THIS PRO HAIR EXCLUSIVE, START WITH THE CUSTOMER AND EX JOHN LEWIS CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE DIRECTOR – TAKES US THROUGH HIS SIX-STEP JOURNEY TO BUILDING A WORLD-CLASS CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE... IN A WORLD WHERE

Customer service isn’t rocket science; it’s a feeling. And how your customer feels about you will ultimately determine how likely they are to come back.

Winning means feeling valued, honoured, respected and treated fairly and individually, rather than like a cog in a machine. Winning means feeling heard, recognised and appreciated. This is exactly the reason why your salon needs a listening culture.

You’re probably pretty good at listening already. I’m sure your passion for people and meeting their needs got you into business in the first place. But how much energy have you actually spent on embedding a consistent listening culture across their salon business? A culture where everyone strives to be one step ahead of your customers’ needs, and where everyone knows how to read the room before delivering the service their customers expect?

customers are no different. If you want to get to the truth, you’re going to have to ask them more than once.

However, don’t let this put you off. Whilst your customer’s job may not be to articulate what they need, they can certainly tell you what they don’t need and where there’s areas for improvement. The most important thing you can do is listen actively to their feedback with the intent to understand, rather than with the intent to respond. In a world where everyone talks and no one listens, these are the skills which make your service stand out from the pack.

Alas, your task is made no less arduous by your customers. Ask them what they want from you, and there’s a high probability that you’ll be met with a blank face! Your product or service may not be quite as central to their lives as you might think, and as Steve Jobs said: ‘People don’t know what they want until you show them’.

Unless you’ve made a monumental mistake, honest customer feedback will rarely come your way without a fight. Very few customers have the time (or the will!) to help you do a better job for another customer they’ve never met. But this is why you have to persevere, drill into the details and notice any patterns which may appear. Try it with your customers the next time you ask them how they’re feeling about your business. Their first response is likely to be bland, neutral or possibly even irritated, and their second may also fail to get to the heart of the matter… but ask them a third time, and watch the floodgates open! Think about the way you fill in surveys – your sole focus is to get through things as quickly as possible to try and win a prize you know you’ll never see. Your

“However trifling they may appear to you, all complaints are important. A complaint essentially signals a disconnect between what the client expected and what you’ve delivered, so the way you handle them matters.”

How you deal with any complaints will be the decisive test of your listening culture. However trifling they may appear to you, all complaints are important. A complaint essentially signals a disconnect between what the client expected and what you’ve delivered, so the way you handle them matters. Every time a customer gets angry enough to complain, the average person will tell between ten and fifteen other people. The worse their experience, the more people they tell. Bad news always travels faster than good!

It’s natural to want to bury complaints or hope they’ll go away if you leave them long enough, but they won’t. You have to act quickly, put out the fire and prevent them from recurring. Overall, customers are mostly reasonable people; embark on transactions with goodwill and most people will tolerate a margin of error. However, the problems start when a complaint isn’t dealt with efficiently and empathetically, or when someone feels that an organisation isn’t listening. My first rule of complaints will therefore always be the same: catch them early.

You have to see complaints as opportunities –heaven-sent, gold-dusted opportunities to collect information about a customer’s needs, attitudes and beliefs. They’re a way to fix the broken stuff, so it won’t happen again. And always remember the golden rule: starting with the customer starts with listening to them.

DISPELLING MYTHS ABOUT HAIR EXTENSIONS

THE NEXT CUT

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY, AWARD-WINNING HAIRDRESSER, ANDREW BARTON, BELIEVES IN EVOLVING YOUR CRAFT THROUGH CREATIVITY, BUSINESS ACUMEN AND MENTORING. THIS MONTH, HE WALKS US THROUGH ALL OF THE RIGHT WAYS TO USE HAIR EXTENSIONS.

Hair extensions are one of the most misunderstood areas of our industry, but they’re also one of the most exciting.

I’ve worked with Racoon hair extensions for years, and they’ve become an integral part of my creative and commercial work. However, we need to address the elephant in the room straight away: extensions are not just about length. That’s the biggest myth out there! Extensions are about transformation, and not always in the obvious way. They can add density, structure, colour and movement. They can correct a haircut, enhance a style or completely redefine a client’s relationship with their hair.

One of the most powerful uses of extensions is subtle enhancement. A client might not want longer hair, but they want fuller hair. They want their blow-dry to last longer, and they want that feeling of ‘good hair’ every day. And this is where extensions come into their own.

Another myth I hear constantly is that extensions damage the hair. They don’t – not when they’re applied and removed correctly. Damage comes from poor technique, poor consultation and poor aftercare. As professionals, it’s our responsibility to educate our clients and maintain the integrity of the hair.

For me, consultation is everything. I look at the client’s lifestyle, their hair type and their maintenance commitment. Extensions should not feel like a burden; they should feel like a natural extension of your life. And this is where the correct training – from both the product company and in-house – is essential.

From a creative perspective, extensions are a dream. They allow you to push boundaries and create shapes and silhouettes that wouldn’t be possible otherwise. They allow you to experiment with colour without commitment.

And from a business perspective? They’re transformative. Yes, extensions can significantly increase your salon revenue, but more importantly, they increase client loyalty too. Clients who invest in extensions have to return regularly and build a relationship with you.

However, here is the key to working with extensions: you have to treat it as a specialist service. Training is essential. Precision is essential. Confidence is essential. I always say: ‘Don’t just offer extensions –own them!’ You need to create a dedicated consultation process, build a portfolio, showcase your work and position yourself as an expert.

Ultimately, when extensions are done properly, they are not an add-on; they are a game changer.

“Yes, extensions can significantly increase your salon revenue, but more importantly, they increase client loyalty too. Clients who invest in extensions have to return regularly and build a relationship with you.”

Developed in the UK and inspired by the very best stylists, the 247AIR represents the next generation of intelligent foil-dispensing technology.

Building on Procare’s long-standing reputation for professional innovation, this advanced dispenser has been designed to help colourists work smarter, faster and with greater precision during every colour service.

At the heart of the 247AIR is its innovative Airflow Technology, which automatically cuts and folds foil with exceptional consistency. The result? WHY THE ‘IN-BETWEEN’ MATTERS MORE THAN EVER

SAMANTHA SAYS...

SAMANTHA CUSICK, AWARD-WINNING SALON FOUNDER AND OLAPLEX

AMBASSADOR, SHARES HER VALUABLE

BUSINESS ADVICE WITH

PRO

HAIR READERS.

HERE, SHE LOOKS AT THE REALITY OF APPOINTMENT FREQUENCY.

If the last few years have taught us anything as an industry, it’s that resilience isn’t optional. The Cost of Living crisis is real, and I’ve absolutely noticed it in how clients are approaching their salon visits. Appointments are being stretched, budgets are being thought about more carefully and people are much more considered about where they spend their money.

When it comes to colour, the questions I’m getting asked most are about longevity. How do I make this last longer? How do I keep my hair healthy at home? And honestly, I completely get it. I’m not offended by it –it’s just the reality of where we are right now.

Clients still want gorgeous hair. They still value what we do and the expertise we bring, but they’re thinking more about getting the most out of every appointment and about whether their hair can work harder for them between visits. The rise in low-maintenance colour choices is no coincidence either. Clients want hair that looks expensive and feels healthy, but also hair that fits around their actual life and budget. Those things aren’t mutually exclusive, and the smartest salons are the ones leaning into that.

So, let’s talk about what happens between appointments. Because here’s the thing... it’s not out of your control at all. In fact, it’s one of the biggest opportunities we have right now.

So much of colour maintenance now happens at home. TikTok tutorials and a much more DIY-confident generation of clients mean that people genuinely believe they can take care of their hair without a big price tag attached. And they’re not wrong, they can, but only if we’ve educated them properly. That’s our role. Teaching clients about their hair, recommending the right products and showing them how to get the best results between visits. As hairdressers, we should absolutely be taking advantage of this opportunity.

Even if a client is coming in less frequently, that doesn’t mean we lose the relationship. If

“Clients may be spacing their visits out, but they still want guidance, expertise and results. If you’re playing a part in how they care for their hair at home, you stay part of their routine.”

anything, it deepens it. Education and trust become everything in this dynamic. If we can help clients maintain the integrity of their hair between appointments, they’ll get better long-term results, they’ll stay more connected to us and to the salon experience, and they’ll keep coming back –all because they can see and feel the difference. If we’re only focused on what happens in the chair every six, eight or ten weeks, we’re genuinely missing a huge part of the picture.

For me, healthy colour always starts with bond care. Maintaining bond strength between appointments is something I feel really passionately about for my colour clients. This is where Olaplex No.3PLUS has been a complete game changer. It’s a pre-wash treatment, so you wet the hair, apply it, leave it for three minutes and then cleanse and condition as normal. That’s it. And I think the reason clients actually stick to using it is exactly that –simplicity. It fits into real life. Nobody wants another complicated step in their routine; they want something that works hard but feels completely effortless. That’s exactly what this does.

Introducing a treatment like this in the salon – and letting clients experience the difference first hand – opens up the retail conversation naturally and keeps them connected to you and the products you recommend. Clients may be spacing their visits out, but they still want guidance, expertise and results. If you’re playing a part in how they care for their hair at home, you stay part of their routine. And honestly, that has a financial benefit for your business too.

Remember, the relationship doesn’t end when the appointment does. The hairdressers who stay connected to their clients between visits are the ones who build real, lasting loyalty. Because when a client trusts your advice at home, they value your expertise in the salon even more. And that time between visits might actually be one of the biggest opportunities our industry has right now.

INVESTING IN OPPORTUNITIES BEYOND THE SALON FLOOR

RAMPING UP TEAM RETENTION

AWARD-WINNING SALON OWNER AND EDUCATOR, MELISSA TIMPERLEY, BELIEVES SALONS CAN BE DOING MORE TO ADDRESS THE STAFF RETENTION CRISIS FACING THE INDUSTRY. BY INVESTING IN CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES BEYOND THE SALON FLOOR, SHE FEELS THE NEXT GENERATION OF STYLISTS WILL BE MORE INSPIRED, ENGAGED AND EXCITED ABOUT LONG-TERM CAREERS IN HAIRDRESSING.

“Recruitment and retention remain some of the biggest challenges facing the hair industry,” Melissa says. “Many salons blame younger stylists for not having the staying power, but I believe it’s the salons that need to take accountability and look at ways to engage and inspire their stylists alongside building a salon-based career.”

While industry conversations around younger stylists has focused on rising self-employment, staff shortages and recruitment challenges, Melissa believes salons need to offer more than just a column to retain ambitious talent in 2026. “For me, it’s really important that our team see hairdressing as a career with endless possibilities,” she explains. “I never want someone to feel like their world starts and ends behind the chair. If salons want to keep talented people engaged in the long term, we have to invest in their creativity, confidence and growth –not just expect them to turn up and do clients every day.”

allowing them to further explore their creativity and learn from other talented stylists, taking inspiration and new skills back to the salon.

Senior stylist Adam said, “We were lucky enough to be involved in several shows at London Fashion Week this year, mainly working with designers from the London School of Fashion. It was incredible to see your work come to life on the catwalk. Everyone involved was exceptionally talented, and considering this was the beginning of many of their careers, it was truly impressive.”

Senior stylist Hamish adds, “At fashion week, the pressure is on –the pace is intense and expectations are high. It was an absolute whirlwind, but I wouldn’t change it for the world! Being part of something so creative and inspiring was an incredible experience.”

Melissa recently sent members of her Manchester-based team to Milan to work at Fashion Week, giving them the opportunity to assist world-renowned stylists on shows for Gucci and Bottega Veneta. The team were able to assist in creating a wide range of high-fashion looks, offering them a behind-the-scenes insight into the pace, pressure and creativity of global fashion events. Senior stylist Victoria said, “The whole experience was incredibly inspiring. Milan was buzzing all week, and it opened our eyes to how big and exciting this industry can be.”

Beyond the shows themselves, the team were able to experience the culture and atmosphere of Milan Fashion Week first-hand – from exploring the city between call times to unexpectedly sharing a lift at the Four Seasons with fashion icon Anna Wintour ahead of the Bottega show!

Closer to home, the team have also had the opportunity to work at London Fashion Week,

“I

never want someone to feel like their world starts and ends behind the chair. If salons want to keep talented people engaged in the long term, we have to invest in their creativity, confidence and growth – not just expect them to turn up and do clients every day.”

Melissa is keen to express how experiences like these can help to create a long-term career vision for stylists, proving that employed salon life can still offer excitement, progression and opportunity. She explains, “There’s a lot of conversation in our industry about how hard it is to keep employed teams motivated, but I think stylists are looking for purpose and possibility. I’m not saying you have to fly your team out to Milan, but you also can’t clip their wings either. They want to feel part of something creative; they want experiences and they want to keep learning. We have to create environments where our team can genuinely grow.”

Alongside international opportunities, Melissa continues to invest heavily in education, mentorship and creative development within her salon culture, building a team environment designed to support both personal and professional progression.

At a time when many salons are rethinking how they attract and retain talent, the approach at Melissa Timperley Salons highlights a growing shift in the industry, where exciting and fulfilling career opportunities are just as important as a paycheck at the end of the month.

A FAMILY AFFAIR

For the 65th anniversary of Goldsworthy’s Hairdressing, Josh and Sophie-Rose Goldsworthy each reflect on their family heritage by selecting a few defining images from their archives. Their choices span the years, with each one tied to a personal memory or moment in time…

This image comes from my father’s British Hairdressing Awards winning collection, and it’s one of my earliest memories of professional hairdressing. I remember seeing the photographs displayed around the salon as a child, and later discovering they had been used in hairdressing training materials across the UK. What strikes me now is how contemporary the image still feels –the shape, balance and silhouette remain just as relevant today as they were nearly 30 years ago. I’ve always believed you can teach somebody to cut hair and you can teach somebody to colour hair, but taste is something far harder to define. Thankfully, that’s something Sophie and I were fortunate enough to grow up surrounded by.

This image, created by our father Steven Goldsworthy, has always been my favourite. And it happened completely by chance! The hair had been set in heated rollers for another look, but as the rollers were removed and the hair fell effortlessly into place, they captured the moment exactly as it was. The volume, movement and softness are breathtaking, and ever since, we’ve chased that same feeling in every shoot. It’s proof that beauty often reveals itself in the moments never meant to exist.

Sophie:

After years of working in fashion, I wanted to create a collection that felt relevant to both session stylists and salon hairdressers. This project brought together models I’d recently worked with on Britain’s Next Top Model. It became my first experience creating images with two models in every frame, which is far more challenging than it looks. I’ve always been drawn to black and white photography, mainly because it strips everything back to shape, texture and emotion. I still love the intensity of this image and the timeless quality it has.

After spending some time away from entering the major hair awards, this became my first British Hairdressing Awards collection for several years. The shoot came about after a trip to Russia, where I was part of a hair show alongside some of the industry’s biggest names. It was there that Michael Young approached me about creating a collection together. Looking back, this image marked the beginning of my fascination with colour placement and how strategically placed colour can completely transform a shape. It taught me that some of the most powerful creative ideas are often the simplest.

This image is from one of Josh’s early collections, and it was the first shoot I ever assisted on after joining the family business. Until then, Josh led all the creative direction while I focused on the salon floor, but watching this collection come to life pushed me to shoot my own the following year, and we’ve worked side by side ever since. I still love the contrast in this image: the softness of the wispy, textured mullet against the model’s sharp, fearless attitude.

This image is from my debut collection. Looking back, it’s clear I was still searching for my own style and direction, but that’s exactly what makes it important. It was the first full body of work I ever created. It also featured my first page boy/bowl style cut, which has since become a staple within a Goldsworthy’s collection. The work went on to finalise me in several major newcomer awards, and it taught me one of the most valuable lessons in my career: nothing replaces planning and preparation.

2023

This is probably my favourite image I’ve ever photographed. It was taken during a live photoshoot at the L’Oréal Academy, where we delivered a two-day masterclass with the ID Artist team. It represents our shared passion for education and the work we love to do on stage, teaching and inspiring other hairdressers. It brings together everything I love: beautiful hair, intricate colour work, a soft palette and a striking model. The roundness of the cut contrasted with the sharp triangular colour panels creates the perfect balance, and I love everything about it.

This image came from the first collection Josh and I created together for the British Hairdressing Awards. It has always been one of my favourites, mainly because it’s a shoot that quietly marked the beginning of everything we’ve built as a duo since. It was completely self-shot with local girls, a dust sheet backdrop and decade-old college photography lights, yet somehow it sparked global attention and helped us discover our shared creative identity –chaos and all. Three lights even caught fire during the shoot!

This image comes from one of the many wig-making projects Sophie and I have delivered over the years with teams such as the L’Oréal ID Artist team and the Fellowship. The wig was created as a demonstration piece at the start of the day, and I’ve always loved the precision of the shape and the way the deep blue tones work with the graphic outline of the cut. The sharp geometry feels both classic and futuristic at the same time. And, unsurprisingly, the model is Elly again. Few people can transform quite as effortlessly as she can.

This image was created during a mentoring day with the L’Oréal Future Talent winners, where Sophie and I were demonstrating how one preparation could create multiple looks. This was the final image of the day, and I’ve always loved everything about it. The intensity in the model’s expression draws you in, while the softness and movement of the hair create a beautiful contrast. For me, it represents one of the things I enjoy

This image from last year’s self-shot collection, Chromacre, is a real favourite of mine. As a L’Oréal Colour Specialist, I love the freedom shoots give me to experiment –building new tones, patterns and shapes that push beyond the everyday salon aesthetic. My personal style leans dark, with a heavier music influence, so I’m always drawn to bringing a touch of grunge into our work. I love this piece for its movement, its shine and the way the colour feels both controlled and completely alive.

This image from our latest self-shot collection, Chromacre, is probably my favourite from the series. The model, Elly, has become something of a muse for Sophie and me over the years, appearing in countless shoots, shows and creative projects. What I love most about this image is the colour placement and the fact that it’s created using her own natural hair rather than a wig. The movement, texture and softness make the colour feel alive, while the shape creates a sense of controlled chaos. It perfectly captures the creative freedom that personal projects allow us.

This image perfectly sums up what we love most about hair: beautiful colour placement, soft dimension and effortless texture. The blush tones are delicately woven through the blonde to create movement and interest without overpowering the overall look. Modern, wearable and quietly creative, it’s a true reflection of our approach to hairdressing.

Voices From the Salon Floor...

Street Style –Get the Salon Look

The Look: Sunlit Brunette

Warm brunette tones are having a major moment, and Sunlit Brunette is the perfect example of why. Powered by PCC Smart Lift, the look delivers soft lifting and tonal refinement in one smart service, ideal for clients wanting lighter, sun-kissed results without harsh contrast or high-maintenance regrowth.

Step 1:

Section the hair as shown, working methodically through the nape first. Begin in the right nape area using diagonal sections to create soft, diffused movement.

Step 3:

Continue the same application pattern throughout the back of the head, alternating between delicate weaves for softness and slices for brighter pops of dimension. Move into the front sections, pivoting around the hairline and parting to frame the face with subtle brightness and maintain fluid movement through the colour.

WHAT TO USE

• INDOLA PCC Smart Lift

• INDOLA CREAM DEVELOPER 9%

• INDOLA Color Shampoo

• INDOLA Color Treatment

Step 2:

Using alternating weaves and slices, apply: PCC Smart Lift 10.4 + 10.1 + 10.0 (2:1:1) with Cream Developer 9% (1:1). Blend the formula softly into the roots to avoid harsh lines and create a naturally grown-in finish. Between highlighted sections, use a freehand technique to smudge the colour through the mid-lengths and ends for seamless brightness.

Step 4:

Allow the colour to process for 45 minutes. Rinse thoroughly, then cleanse and condition using the INDOLA Color range to maintain tone clarity, shine and colour longevity.

• INDOLA Hair Therapy Spray Conditioner

• INDOLA Thermal Protector

• INDOLA Glaze It Up

and

Thermal Protector to hydrate, detangle and protect against heat while enhancing smoothness and shine. Style with loose bends or polished waves to enhance the caramel dimension and reflective golden tones, then finish with INDOLA Glaze It Up for glossy shine, frizz control and a silky, light-reflective finish. The final result is luxurious yet wearable, a rich brunette with effortless summer glow.

“How do I make dimensional brunette hair look glossy and expensive?”

Luxury brunette colour is all about softness, dimension and shine. Like the Sunlit Brunette look, I create that expensive-looking finish by working with horizontal slices and soft weaves through the hair, alternating depth and brightness to mimic how light naturally reflects through healthy brunette tones.

Using the new INDOLA PCC Smart Lift shades allows me to softly lift and refine the hair at the same time, so the result feels seamless rather than stripy or over-highlighted.

“Can lighter brunette tones still look low maintenance?”

Absolutely. One of the reasons I love Sunlit Brunette is because it’s designed to grow out softly and naturally. Using PCC Smart Lift means we can create gentle brightness and tonal refinement without harsh lines or obvious regrowth.

The goal is always wearable colour that still feels elevated, something clients can live in comfortably while keeping that expensive-looking finish for longer.

A FREELANCE STATE OF MIND

BROOKE EVANS IS OUR PROFESSIONAL FREELANCE HAIRDRESSER OF THE YEAR 2025 AT THE PRO HAIR AWARDS – SPONSORED BY THE FREELANCE SUITE. IN AN EXCLUSIVE SERIES WITH US, SHE DISSECTS EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BECOMING AN INDEPENDENT STYLIST. THIS MONTH, BROOKE LOOKS AT THE IMPORTANCE OF STICKING TO YOUR CORE VALUES.

Sticking to your core values as a self-employed hairdresser sounds simple in theory, but in reality, it can be one of the hardest parts of building a career. When you work for yourself, there are constant pressures coming from every direction –financial pressures, the need to grow your clientele, brand opportunities, expectations from salons and the desire to succeed quickly. In the middle of all of that, it can be easy to lose sight of what actually matters to you and the kind of professional you want to be.

As freelancers, we are often presented with opportunities that look exciting on the surface. A brand collaboration, ambassador role or education opportunity often feels flattering and validating, especially when you are trying to establish yourself within the industry. And sometimes, the financial benefits attached to these opportunities can make them even harder to turn down. However, it is important to realise that not every opportunity is the right one. Just because something looks successful from the outside, that does not mean it aligns with your values, your goals or the direction you want to go in.

There are times when we stay loyal to brands or businesses because we feel obligated to –perhaps a brand supported you early in your career or maybe you fear walking away from something secure. But over time, relationships can change. You may no longer feel seen, valued or heard within that environment, and the role that once inspired you may begin to feel draining and unfulfilling. When that happens, it is important to be honest with yourself. Staying somewhere purely out of comfort, guilt or fear can slowly pull you away from the things that matter most to you.

Your career should reflect who you are. If an opportunity no longer aligns with your beliefs, standards or vision, it is okay to move on and seek something that does. Being self-employed gives you the freedom to build a business that represents you authentically, and protecting that authenticity is important. Clients are drawn to people who are

“There are times when we stay loyal to brands or businesses because we feel obligated to –perhaps a brand supported you early in your career or maybe you fear walking away from something secure. But over time, relationships can change.”

genuine, passionate and consistent. So, when your work aligns with your values, your business feels more fulfilling and sustainable in the long term.

When you are new to freelancing, it is very easy to become completely focused on growth. Building a clientele often becomes the priority, and naturally you want to say yes to every appointment, every client and every opportunity. During this stage, core values can sometimes get pushed as you drive to survive and succeed.

One of the biggest examples of this is your booking policy and the boundaries around your time. Many self-employed hairdressers avoid implementing booking fees, deposits, cancellation policies or strict scheduling systems when they first start out, as there can be a fear that putting policies in place will make the business seem less approachable or flexible. The problem is that without clear boundaries, clients often fail to respect your time. Last-minute cancellations, no-shows, late arrivals and constant rescheduling can quickly become normalised if expectations are not communicated from the start. Once clients become used to having no structure, it becomes much harder to enforce policies later down the line.

Protecting your time is not selfish; it is often one of the reasons we choose to go freelance in the first place. Your time is your income, your energy and your livelihood. Strong booking policies and clear communication are not there to punish clients; they are there to create mutual respect and allow your business to run smoothly. Setting these standards early helps attract clients who value your work and understand the professionalism behind your business. Ultimately, sticking to your core values means building a career that feels aligned with who you are. It means making decisions not just based on money or fear, but based on what genuinely fulfils you. Remember, success is not only about growth; it is about creating a long-term career that feels authentic, sustainable and rewarding.

GOING SOLO

AS MORE AND MORE STYLISTS ARE CHOOSING TO GO SOLO AND ENJOY THE FREEDOM OF SELF-EMPLOYMENT, THE TRADITIONAL SALON MODEL IS UNDERGOING A PROFOUND TRANSFORMATION. DRIVEN BY A DESIRE OF GREATER AUTONOMY AND A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE, THESE INDEPENDENT PROFESSIONALS ARE REDEFINING THE INDUSTRY. NEXT IN THE SERIES, WE SPEAK TO DANNY MALONE ABOUT HIS SOLO MOVE.

Danny Malone is an award-winning freelance hairdresser and two-time Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year, recognised for his creative cutting, colour and editorial work. With more than 13 years in the industry, Danny decided to branch out on his own in 2025, and he now works in the heart of Belfast. A member of the 2024 Revlon Professional Visionaries team, Danny is a hit with his clients and known for a strong visual eye mixed with an unmistakably cheeky sense of humour.

What was the moment you realised working solo might actually suit you better than being in a team or salon?

I think it was when I noticed that I was comfortable working on my own, but that I also still loved being part of a team. I enjoy the buzz of a salon and being around other creatives, but I don’t need it to do my best work. I’ve always been able to work independently, stay focused and push myself. In this industry, you’re never really alone anyway! When you’ve got strong friendships and connections, you always have people to lean on, bounce ideas off and feel supported by.

tailoring every look to the client in front of me and giving them a top service.

How has going solo changed the way you work with clients?

It’s more personal now, and clients get my full attention from start to finish. There’s no rushing and no distractions; it’s just me and them. This has definitely built stronger trust and better relationships.

What’s been the most surprising upside of working alone?

The confidence it’s given me. Running everything myself has made me believe in my own ability so much more. You realise you’re capable of way more than you thought.

What’s one thing people don’t talk about enough when it comes to working alone in this industry?

It can be lonely sometimes. You don’t always have someone beside you to bounce ideas off or vent to, so you have to be your own motivation a lot of the time.

What fears or doubts did you have before going out on your own?

My biggest fear was not having enough clients and the income dipping. I worried I’d lose people or that it would be too risky. In reality, my clients backed me more than I ever expected, and that fear didn’t last long at all. I really do have the best clients.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve gained creatively since working solo?

Freedom. I don’t have to fit into anyone else’s style or rules. I can really push myself creatively,

“If you’ve built good relationships and you’re passionate about what you do, you’ll be surprised how well things fall into place and how much happier you are.”

Was there anything you had to unlearn after leaving a traditional set-up?

Yes, it was feeling like I had to please everyone or fit into a certain mould. I had to unlearn playing it safe and start trusting my own instincts more.

Looking back now, what advice would you give to someone considering stepping out on their own?

Make sure you’re prepared, believe in yourself and don’t wait for the perfect timing – it doesn’t exist! If you’ve built good relationships and you’re passionate about what you do, you’ll be surprised how well things fall into place and how much happier you are.

This creates the perfect opportunity to offer a solution that delivers long-lasting results and keeps clients happy all summer long.

The BLONDME Glow Toner in the shade Ice (10-1) was applied in sliced sections, alternating with another glow toner in the shade Sand (9.5-41) to build dimension, using a triangular sectioning pattern for dimension and blend. This was finished with the Clear (0-00) glow toner for added shine and softness. The hair was washed with shampoo and conditioner from the BLONDME Care Range, before applying the BLONDME Nourishing Mask to reinforce bonds and deeply nourish. THE SCIENCE BEHIND CREATIVITY

In professional hairdressing, colour sits at the intersection of creativity and science. It is one of the most personal, expressive and technically demanding areas of the industry. For Philip Meehan, Revlon Professional Brand Master Educator UK & Ireland, that constant evolution is exactly what

“Professional hair colour always was, and always will be, the most exciting area of hairdressing for me,” Philip says.

“Colour allows both hairdressers and clients to express individuality more than any other salon service. Whether it’s soft balayage, dimensional blondes, vivid fashion shades or grey blending, there are endless possibilities to create something completely bespoke.”

That balance between artistry and innovation lies at the heart of the brand’s colour philosophy. “Revlon Professional is always bringing innovation to the market,” he explains. “We colour with care –it’s a double approach where science and beauty meet.”

Across ranges including Revlonissimo Colorsmetique, Color Sublime, Color Excel and Nutri Color Filters, Philip points to a portfolio designed to support both creativity and technical excellence. Vegan formulas, built-in metal protection, bond-supporting technologies, grey-coverage systems, acid-based glossing and advanced-lifting capabilities all play a role in giving colourists greater flexibility behind the chair. Among the latest developments is the launch of Revlon Professional’s new .8 tones, powered by FUS3 Technology, designed to deliver enhanced cool reflects and up to 10 weeks of activated coolness.

For Philip, however, great colour is never just about the formula itself. “Colourists must first understand the science of the hair inside out,” he says. “Then they need to understand the science behind colour. Those two things build the solid foundation needed for colourists to truly grow.”

That philosophy shaped the development of Revlon Professional’s inaugural Colour Specialist Programme, which Philip recently led alongside the education team. As the brand’s most advanced colour education course to date, the programme combines intensive technical learning with deeper creative and scientific understanding.

“As an education team, we wanted to help colourists truly understand natural base levels, pigment distribution and

how colour behaves on the hair.” Philip explains. “Once you understand those fundamentals properly, your colour work becomes far more accurate and far more elevated.”

The transformation among participants, he says, went beyond technical skill alone. “The course challenges hairdressers to step outside their comfort zone. It eliminates guesswork and builds real confidence in achieving accurate colour results. Some of the feedback we received described it as transformative – not just for their technical skills, but for their businesses and confidence too.”

That confidence is central to how Philip views technical education. While creativity remains essential, he believes knowledge is what gives colourists true freedom. “Technical confidence changes everything,” he says. “It allows you to confidently explain limitations when something isn’t achievable in one session. I always remember from my own training: an explanation before saves an excuse after.”

As innovation continues to accelerate across the industry, Revlon Professional remains focused on ensuring new developments stay relevant and practical for salons. “We’re constantly tracking trends and evolving,” Philip says. “Inclusivity is hugely important to us. We’re continuously working to understand how colour performs across different hair textures and tones.”

Looking ahead, what excites him most is that the momentum shows no signs of slowing. “Revlon Professional has always pushed colour innovation forward,” he says. “From metal-neutralisation technologies to vegan formulations and damage-reversing gloss systems, we keep evolving – and education will continue evolving alongside it.”

Ultimately, Philip wants salons and colourists to feel one thing above all: confidence. “Empowerment is at the core of what we provide,” he says. “I want salons and colourists to experience unwavering confidence, trust and genuine knowledge every time they work with Revlon Professional colour.”

JOSEPH I’ANSON ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Joseph I’Anson is part of a new generation of hairdressers building serious influence beyond the salon floor. Through glamorous hair-up tutorials, styling videos and confidence-boosting education content, Joseph has amassed more than 700,000 Instagram followers alongside a huge TikTok audience, with millions tuning in each month to watch his work.

How did you first get into content creation and social media?

It started properly about six years ago, during lockdown. Obviously, like everyone, I found myself at a bit of a loose end with nothing to do. So I thought, I’m going to develop a skill –and that skill was hair-ups.

My first set-up was literally a mannequin head gaffer-taped to my bedroom desk with a cheap stand from Amazon and a little ring light! It’s completely evolved now into a proper little studio, but at the beginning it was very DIY.

Was there a moment you realised social media had become a real career path?

I think every milestone felt exciting at the time! 10,000 followers, 20,000 followers – every step gave me that buzz and that drive to keep going. I remember when one of my first videos hit a million views, I was completely blown away!

thick skin because people will tell you they hate something, but for every ten percent of bad feedback, there’s 90 per cent of people who genuinely love what you do.

What do you think makes someone successful online today?

I think you’ve got to have a niche. I do all aspects of hair in the salon, but online my niche is hair-ups and styling. I think it’s important not to put your hands into too many different pies.

What is your essential toolkit as a content creator?

Content isn’t just going to magically make itself; you’ve got to be willing to put the time in. You can spend an hour filming something and then another hour editing it all together. Because of this, you need a good eye for videography, photography and aesthetics. For my finished looks, I always make sure the hair itself is exactly what I created. I don’t edit the hair, but I’ll sometimes use Photoshop to give it more of that polished, editorial feel.

What has been the most memorable moment so far?

Working with ghd has been a huge one for me. When I was a Saturday boy at 13, ghd was the thing – and it still is. So now, to actually work with them and get paid to create content for them is amazing. That was the dream for 13-year-old me.

What has been your biggest challenge about building an online platform?

It’s a lot of work. I do Monday to Saturday in the salon (Mark Leeson in Mansfield), and then after work I create content. That’s what I do with most of my downtime now, but I genuinely enjoy it. It’s actually a bit of escapism for me, where I can just zone out and create. But social media can also be brutal sometimes too. TikTok especially – they go for the jugular! You have to develop

What creators, platforms or resources inspire you most?

I love the results that people like Carl Bembridge and Chris Appleton create. In terms of tools, I use the Instagram Edits app all the time for video editing because it makes everything really easy. I also use ChatGPT quite a lot too – it’s really good for running ideas through and getting feedback.

What do you wish you’d known when you first started posting content?

I’d tell myself to just keep going because it’s all going to be worth it. At the beginning, if a video didn’t perform very well, I’d think, ‘Right, I’m not posting anymore because nobody’s bothered!’ But I didn’t realise how big it was all going to become.

Enrica: Efi, when did you first realise you were falling in love with avant-garde?

Efi: It’s evolved over time. My first ever avant-garde collection was based around religion. It was the year I got married, and my mum gave me this beautiful, silver religious icon. I became fascinated by the symbolism, so I started building a story around it. That’s how it started for me – storytelling through hair. What I love is that every collection grows from a concept, but it never stays exactly where it began. It evolves through the process, through mistakes and through collaboration. That’s what keeps it exciting.

Enrica: Your work completely changed the way I look at inspiration. Where do your ideas begin?

Efi: Everywhere! Sometimes it starts with a concept, sometimes with a technique. For me though, technique is going to be what drives you. I’ll get obsessed with making something work, and that’s what excites me as a creative. Nine out of ten things won’t work, but that one thing that does… that’s the magic! Mistakes are part of it too – sometimes the best ideas come from accidents. You melt something, burn something, spray the wrong product, and suddenly it opens a completely new direction.

Enrica: Something I struggle with is confidence. I always wonder if what I’m doing is good enough.

Efi: Oh, absolutely. We all go through that. We are our own worst critics. It took me many years to realise that insecurity is just part of being creative. I’ve had imposter syndrome, and I’ve questioned whether the work was good enough, whether people

I’d like to tell you something before we begin: I’m a huge fan of yours! I truly fell in love with avant-garde through your work – not only because of the aesthetics, but because of the thinking and vision behind it. You’ve inspired so many people, including me, and I’ve always wanted the chance to ask you the questions I’ve carried with me since I first started creating.

would understand it. But the important thing is not to let other people’s opinions start shaping your art. The moment you create purely to please others, you stop creating for yourself. Be kinder to yourself; your work speaks for itself.

Enrica: Is there a part of the creative process you love most?

Efi: I love the moment when the piece starts evolving in front of you. When the shape is building and the idea suddenly starts becoming real – that’s the buzz! You know, we get to express creativity with what we love doing. How lucky is that?I even enjoy the repetition of creating. If I have to make 200

Enrica: Which of your collections is your favourite?

Efi: I would say my three most recent collections are where I’ve really seen my growth. Technically, creatively and, most importantly, in confidence. The more you do, the more you trust yourself. I feel like the last few collections are the truest version of me, but I especially loved the macramé collection. I loved the way it married old craft with new ideas, and how the portraits felt almost timeless.

Enrica: What is your favourite part of your job?

Efi: Education. Inspiring, mentoring and helping the next generation – that’s the key for me. We had incredible hairdressers before us who created this amazing environment for us to grow in, so now it’s our responsibility to create that same space for the people coming up behind us. Don’t

keep things to yourself. Share everything. Celebrate everyone. Encourage creativity.

Enrica: If you could teach one thing to the next generation, what would it be?

Efi: Get the best training you can and learn the basics inside out. Whether it’s classic cutting, colour or creative work, everything comes back to understanding the fundamentals. Walk before you run. And put yourself in uncomfortable situations – that’s how you grow in confidence.

Enrica: And what about if someone was planning their first photographic collection? This is a question that I would have loved to ask you four years ago, because you are the absolute queen of avant-garde! What would your advice be?

Talking to Efi reminded me that creativity isn’t about perfection; it’s about courage, experimentation and trusting yourself. More than anything, what stayed with me was her honesty around confidence and self-doubt. She remains everything I imagined: inspiring, generous and a true artist.

Efi: What’s very important is how you work with creatives like your make-up artist and your photographer. You should always allow everybody to put a little bit inside the melting pot, because that’s how you’re going to come up with something new. And it’s also very important to really acknowledge and appreciate the team that you work with. Lastly, when it comes to an avant-garde collection, preparation is everything. It’s vital to get the right models – the face always needs to fit the story.

Enrica: We have to talk about AI. Do you see it as a risk, a tool or a new creative language?

Efi: Definitely a tool – and an incredible one. We should get inspiration from it, because I think AI really pushes our creativity. It’s a

healthy kind of pressure, but it should never replace the emotional journey of making something with your hands. The feeling of spending hours building a piece, testing it, failing, trying again – AI can’t replace that experience. What worries me is the pressure of perfection. AI creates this unrealistic expectation that everything should be flawless, but art isn’t about perfection. The feeling is what matters. For me, they should exist in parallel, but not compete.

Enrica: You’ve achieved so much already. What’s your next dream?

Efi: Moving to the beach. Ha ha! To be honest, this past year has been completely unreal for me because it was my first nomination for British Hairdresser of the Year. I could not even believe I got nominated, let alone did I expect to win it! The competition was so strong, and I’m not even going to lie, it’s still sinking in! What’s next? Just to keep creating, to keep challenging myself, to keep inspiring people and to spend more time with my daughter. That’s the dream.

Do you have any curated pieces or special features in the salon?

Yes, we commissioned artist Sue Bardwell (who we discovered through Instagram) to create portraits of music artists we love. They have become a real talking point in the salon, and our clients love them too. Icons never go out of style, so they bring something timeless to the space. The Design Edit.

How would you describe the design of your salon?

Our salon has a Scandi loft feel, blending minimalist Scandinavian style with an open, industrial edge. The design uses a light, neutral colour palette, natural materials such as wood and stone, and plenty of natural light to create a calm, airy space. We wanted it to feel sleek and functional, but still warm and relaxed, with a focus on simplicity, comfort and openness.

How have you embraced sustainability within your design?

Sustainability was considered from the beginning. We reclaimed a lot of the timber, stone and materials used in the salon design, giving existing materials a new life. We also work with Full Circle, and many vegan and B Corp certfied brands.

Do you have a dress code for your team? No, we are an independent salon and we want our stylists to dress independently too. Personal style is part of who they are, and it helps clients connect with the stylist who feels right for them.

What’s the reason you fell in love with hairdressing?

It may sound like a cliché, but it was always about creating art and making people feel something. I remember studying da Vinci and the Great Masters, and thinking: I want to be recognised for my artistry, but in my lifetime That urgency shaped everything. Hairdressing gave

Angel is my go-to –the paler, the better, with one ice cube.

That’s dessert! I’ll skip coffee entirely and go straight to an Espresso Martini or a Lemon Drop.

Ackee and saltfish with rice and peas and coleslaw – every time! Jamaican food feeds the soul.

What’s the last thing you bought?

What’s the most treasured item in your kitbag?

My YS Park comb and my scissors –they’re non-negotiables and the tools I trust instinctively. Everything else can be replaced, but those… never. And before anything begins, I burn Santo Palo. It’s ritual and it sets the energy. Without it, the work doesn’t start.

What’s the most memorable moment in your career so far?

Winning awards, dancing with superstars and being on the telly! Where do I start?

The Coat, by Schwarzkopf Professional’s Session Label. It’s precision, high shine, heat protection and camera ready, all without trying too hard.

What’s your favourite look you have created?

I’m always chasing a sense of anarchy – work that disrupts and says something. I worked on Ed Sheeran’s Antisocial music video, crafting six distinct wigs and transforming identity through hair. For someone so recognised by his hair, that process felt particularly powerful.

A very pale rosé. Whispering

A Makita leaf blower. Airport security claimed my last one, so I replaced it immediately. Practicality matters, but I balanced it out with hot pink Gucci shoes on the same trip! That’s the reality function and fashion coexisting without apology.

What’s your top binge-watch recommendation?

RuPaul’s Drag Race – such easy, fun viewing! For something more cinematic, Big Little Lies is essential. It’s visually stunning, sharply written, and with a soundtrack that stays with you.

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

I Will Survive – no question! It’s power, release and drama in one track. Most Sundays I’m in my kitchen, vinyl spinning Motown and fully performing. It’s not casual; it’s a karaoke moment! The neighbours don’t get a choice, but I think they secretly enjoy it.
