NAME THAT TUNE
I
t’s cold and now it’s dark really early we basically just want to hibernate until Spring………so what better way to brighten up our day than to play some tunes!!! We get a lot of info into the PEW office every month and the majority of it makes it into the magazine so that we can share all of the news with you. There is always a bundle of new products, new people and some generally rather interesting stuff, but every now and then we receive something a bit different which really sparks my interest. This month it was the announcement from Toolbox by Admiral that the ‘magic of music can be a secret weapon in the workplace, helping to boost brain activity and turn up the volume on productivity’. I’m not sure about you but my main route to turning up the volume on productivity is coffee….lots of coffee! I am however a massive fan of music for lifting the spirits and when embarking on any car journey the playlist is chosen before the sat nav is initiated – this may say a lot about why I am always getting lost!! Anyway those lovely people at Admiral have trawled Spotify to come up with a list of the favourite songs attributed to various trades……this is obviously something of a relief because that’s been on my to do list for a few months now!! Electricians apparently favour Guns N’ Roses – they are big fans in fact with Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O Mine and Paradise City featuring in their top ten – but then who doesn’t like a good sing along to Paradise City? I’m not sure if we should be concerned that Sabotage by the Beastie Boys comes in at number 7 in the electricians hit parade – perhaps I will just leave that thought for you to ponder. Sadly there isn’t a top ten for Electrical Wholesalers which definitely leaves a hole in the Spotify playlist hit parade – maybe we should do something about that – what are your thoughts on Under Pressure by Queen for number 1!

NEWS & VIEWS SES RENEWS TRAINING PARTNERSHIP
SES RENEWS LEEDS COLLEGE OF BUILDING AS APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROVIDER A renewed partnership with SES Engineering Services (SES) is bringing 20 new apprentices to Leeds College of Building. SES selected the College to deliver a Level 3 Electrical apprenticeship to 11 employees and a Level 3 Building Services apprenticeship to another nine. Rob Smith, Head of Partnerships and Skills at Leeds College of Building, explained: “The College worked with SES historically, but we recently began talks again to rekindle our relationship and explore how we could enhance their existing apprenticeship training offer. “This dialogue resulted in the creation of apprenticeship programmes for 20
individuals. And when SES said they were looking for somewhere to host their apprenticeship trades induction day, we were more than happy to assist with that too.” The College hosted the event at South Bank Campus over the summer to allow the apprentices to visit new training facilities and meet tutors over refreshments. SES carried out inductions and team-building tasks. Following lunch, apprentices then listened to a presentation from heating and ventilation lecturers, completed documentation, and participated in short tutor sessions. Samantha Gibbs, Early Careers Advisor at Wates, said: “We are really excited to work with Leeds College of
Building for our Level 2/3 Apprenticeship and our Higher Apprenticeships. SES had a long-standing relationship with the College, and it is great to restart this. Leeds College of Building has an outstanding reputation for high-quality delivery within the construction industry and brilliant account management. I look forward to continuing this relationship.”
SEAWARD DONATES TO LOCAL CHARITIES Seaward Electronic has donated £3,000 to three local charities to help support a number of important community activities. Working to create social equality and prosperity within the former pit village, The Little House of Hope in Thornley has received £1,000 towards transport costs for its ‘Hope Sings’ choir. The Alice Hospice in Hartlepool, which cares for and comforts people affected by life-limiting illness or the
death of a loved one, has also received £1,000 after it was nominated by one of Seaward’s employees. A third donation has gone to Ferryhill’s Little Treasures autism charity, which works from eight locations across the North East to support autistic adults and children. Chris Callan, CEO at Seaward, which supplies its products to customers across the UK and around the world, said: “I can’t think of better recipients for our donations.
I found the visits incredibly inspiring, the commitment and effort of the people to help each other was amazing. “From support for people and families with autism, community groups proving services to local people and to a wonderful hospice providing respite and end of life care - all of the people involved gave huge amounts of time and endless enthusiasm. The donations were possible because of all the work we all do in Seaward.”

SCHNEIDER SET TO EXPAND OPERATIONS IN LEEDS
SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC ANNOUNCES EXPANSION IN LEEDS Schneider Electric is set to expand operations at its site in Leeds. It will invest £7.2m in a facility upgrade, as well as creating 110 new jobs over the next five years. This significant investment underscores Schneider Electric’s growth trajectory due to rising demand from the energy transition and the electric vehicle (EV) market. It reinforces Schneider Electric’s long-term commitment to supporting the UK's move to decarbonisation and represents a boost to the local green economy. Schneider Electric employs 550 people at its Leeds smart factory and Innovation Hub - more than a tenth of its UK workforce. The site specialises in designing and manufacturing medium-
and low-voltage switchgear solutions, which protect and distribute electricity in public, commercial and industrial installations. The new investment will aim to radically enhance the Leeds facility's efficiency to support growing demand for these solutions. A key feature of Schneider's expanding solutions is its portfolio of green and digital switchgear, which replaces the greenhouse gas that is traditionally used in electrical equipment for insulation, with pure air to reduce environmental impact and optimise maintenance and operations. The upgrade will feature a 3,380 sqm extension to an existing assembly and test hall, and a centralised Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) area. Work is projected to begin in early 2024 and be
completed by August 2024. The project is being carried out with cooperation and support from Leeds City Council. Kelly Becker, Zone President UK&I at Schneider Electric, said: “This multi-million pound investment in Leeds reflects our commitment to investing in the UK's burgeoning green economy. I’m proud that through this project, we plan to create local jobs in Yorkshire, which has been part of our operational presence in the UK for years. “Our continued growth and investment are set in the context of a huge opportunity to drive decarbonisation, boost infrastructure to meet the demands of EV charging, and design, build, operate and maintain our buildings in the face of the energy efficiency challenge.”

NEWS & VIEWS SCOLMORE GROUP GAINS CIBSE CERTIFICATION
SCOLMORE GROUP AWARDED CIBSE CPD CERTIFICATION Scolmore Group has been awarded a certification of CPD course provision by CIBSE (Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers), meaning the company is now a CIBSE CPD approved training provider. Scolmore Group now features on CIBSE’s CPD Directory and the first courses to be made available cover a range of topics within circuit protection. KIDDE UNVEILS NEW BRANDING Kidde Safety Europe has unveiled a significant rebrand. With a new logo that represents the home combined with the strapline: ‘The Power to Protect,’ the roll-out of the new identity started to hit the merchant and wholesaler shelves on new packaging earlier this year with the launch of Kidde’s new Co2 Monitor. The new look sees Kidde Safety Europe move away from its traditional shield logo to one that now represents a home, with
the lettermark icon representing the ‘K’ in the Kidde name. Furthermore, as part of the overall rebrand, the company’s portfolio has been streamlined, a move which will mean the popular FIREX brand name, will cease to exist. Crucially, the same high quality and reliable products will remain available – but simply rebranded and repackaged as Kidde. “Our new branding marks a period of positive change for us,” said Rebecca Cackett, European Channel Marketing
Manager at Kidde Safety Europe. “We have a long industry heritage that we are proud of, but we are moving forward with a new look and at a time when we have also invested in our portfolio, introducing additional life safety products that are market leading in terms of design and performance. With our ranges growing, we also wanted to ensure that products were still easy to navigate and identify.”
SURREY TRADESMAN SECURES NATIONAL AWARD An electrician who works across Surrey and the south-east and has raised more than £14,000 for charity over the last decade has secured a national award for his contributions to the local community. Neil Wadsworth has been named one of the three UK winners of the Extra Mile Awards organised by Selco Builders Warehouse. The competition recognised kind-hearted tradespeople who have gone above and beyond to give back to their local community or charities. Neil, 35 and of Worcester Park, has been staging charity football matches for the last 10 years to raise money for
Cancer Research UK and St Raphael’s Hospice in Cheam. Amongst the grounds to have hosted the charity matches have been Sutton United, Dorking Wanderers and Guildford City. In addition, Neil also makes a financial donation to the charity of choice of one of his customers selected at random each month. As one of the Extra Mile Award winners, Neil will receive £1,000 credit to spend on materials and products from Selco. Neil, who owns Neale Wadsworth Electrical with his business partner Jack Neale, said: “We don’t do the fundraising for any type of honour so it was a real surprise to hear I’d

been nominated for the Extra Mile Awards, let alone be one of the winners. “The fundraising started when my best friend lost his mother to cancer a decade ago and I decided to arrange a charity football match to raise funds. It was initially open to friends but it’s grown to become a really inclusive event for anyone who wants to play and a great fundraiser. “Originally all the funds went to Cancer Research UK but, when my dad passed away in 2019, we started splitting the funds with St Raphael’s Hospice as he spent a couple of weeks there. The monthly charity initiative we do with our customers means we are regularly giving to good causes.”

FACE TO FACE
In this month’s Face to Face we hear from Ade Solomon, Group Sales Director at Olympic Fixings, to find out more about the company and the sector it operates in.
FACE TO FACE OLYMPIC FIXINGS Q
When and how was Olympic Fixings established?
A. Olympic Fixings was established over 30 years ago. I joined at the start of 2018, now with over 36 years of experience selling fasteners and fixings, along with fellow Directors Paul Gordon and Gareth Williams. Our aim was to modernise the business and drive growth through product innovation and a new customer service proposition.
Q
What sets Olympic apart from other fixing suppliers?
A. Our mantra is “Quality at our core”. That’s quality in our products, our packaging and the service we offer our customers. We believe fixings are more than just commodities to be traded simply on price. The electrical contractor needs to be able to trust the integrity and suitability of the fixings that are being used. We get great feedback from end users that they trust the quality of the Olympic fixings brand. Relative to some players in the market we are a small team, passionate about what we do, flexible, innovative and prepared to respond quickly to changes in our customer’s needs.
Q
What products and solutions are currently proving popular in the electrical sector? A. We have sold a limited range of our products in convenient Trade-Tubs for
many years. Based on customer feedback we have added many new variants and the feedback from end users has been fantastic. In addition to the ever-popular screw and red plug tub we’ve added tubs

of popular sized steel and brass machine screws, self-drilling screws, self-tapping screws, grommets and fire rated fixings. All designed to help the electrical contractor keep van stock organised and

avoid time lost on site by not having the right fixing for the job. Many of our customers have asked us to source non-catalogue products and so we have launched Olympic Fixings Sourcing - OFS. Instead of turning away an enquiry for “unusual” fixings, wholesalers can now use OFS to satisfy their customer requirement and make some additional sales and margin along the way.
Q
How does Olympic Fixings support its wholesalers? A. We are loyal to the channel – we don’t supply directly through Amazon or, unlike many others, the hybrid national retailers who have taken so much value away from the electrical wholesale channel. Our customer proposition is based on being easy to deal with – 3,500 SKU offered for sale, in nearly all cases, down to the single unit as part of a carriage paid order.
Wholesalers can order by phone, email or through our online catalogue which carries an additional discount to recognise that the wholesaler is doing more of the work. By building brands rather than simply trading commodities, wholesalers who sell Olympic Fixings products can expect to make higher cash margins. We have a range of merchandising solutions from simple countertop units through to full metre wide merchandising stands. Product data is now available through the ePim platform and we are very proud that we’ve recently been awarded Gold Standard by EDATA.
Q
about to be introduced. We have recently launched the “tetra” four way nylon expansion wall plug which can be used in brick, stone concrete or drylining – another value-add product for the wholesaler. We have signed up to attend all the Elex Trade Shows and are we're excited to continue the dialogue with our trade end-users. We are working hard on our sustainability plan under the headers of people, product and planet and you can expect to see further innovation in our packaging and in the way we work. An exciting year ahead for Olympic Fixings and its wholesaler partners.
What are Olympic’s goals for the year ahead?
A. More product innovation is coming with an exciting range of solar fixings

SPECIAL REPORT
HANDLE WITH CARE PEW hears from Securi-Flex on the importance of using the right cable handling equipment in various installation applications and explores the features and benefits of some essential products available on the market.
I
n construction and warehouse operations, people often deny the significance of using appropriate cable handling equipment. However, it plays a pivotal role in enhancing efficiency, reducing labour costs, minimising downtime, and, most importantly, ensuring safety. The right cable handling equipment can make a world of difference, allowing workers to manage cables with ease, precision, and safety. Efficiency and labour cost reduction At the heart of any construction or warehouse operation lies the pursuit of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Traditional methods of handling cables, such as manual lifting and dragging, although once considered necessary, they are now outdated and inefficient. These methods not only consume a significant amount of time but also place tremendous physical demands on workers. Using cable handling equipment enables the completion of tasks that once demanded multiple workers and significant effort with minimal manpower. Drum-Roll A prime example of efficiency-boosting cable handling equipment is the Drum-Roll by Securi-Flex. The Drum-Roll by SecuriFlex Range enables the effortless transportation of heavy cable reels. This reduces the need for manual labour and thereby cutting labour costs significantly. Furthermore, with the proper cable handling equipment, cable installation becomes a streamlined process, resulting in quicker project completion.

CABLE MANAGEMENT
SUPPORT SYSTEM Ian Arbuckle, CEO at LINIAN, examines the premature collapse of cables and interpretation of the relevant regulations.
E
Premature collapse is a term that’s been thrown about a lot within the industry in the last few years. Since the introduction of BS7671 17th Edition Amendment 3 2015, installers have seen multiple interpretations and more recently contradictions of the regulations surrounding this. This article aims to provide the reader with some context and background which we find can assist with the installers understanding and therefore compliance of these regulations. So, let's start with the history… Requirements Fire alarm systems have pretty much always required the use of metallic fixings for cables. Fire alarm regulation BS5839 states; “f) Methods of cable support should be such that circuit integrity will not be reduced below that afforded by the cable used and should withstand a similar temperature and duration of that of the cable, while maintaining adequate support.” The intention of this was not to address the issue of premature collapse of cables in the event of a fire but rather to ensure circuit integrity is maintained on the fire alarm system itself in the event of a fire. This prevents failure of the alarm system in the event of a fire. Emergency lighting code of practice (BS5266) also contained similar clauses for the same purpose, ensuring the continued
operation of the emergency lighting circuits in the event of a fire. Following the tragedies that have taken place such as Shirley Towers (April 2010), Harrow Court (February 2005) and Atherstone-on-Stour (Nov 2007), whereby firefighters and members of the public have been killed becoming entangled in collapsed electrical cabling, the coroners' recommendations included changes to the building regulations and electrical wiring regulations. After an inquest into the Harrow Court tragedy, March 2007, HM Coroner Mr Edward Thomas issued several recommendations through a Rule 43 letter [1,2] including a recommendation to social housing providers regarding the support of fire alarm cables which should conform (as a minimum) to BS5839 – Part 1:2002; clause 26.2. A further inquest into the Shirley Towers tragedy in February 2013, HM Coroner Mr K Wiseman issued recommendations in several Rule 43 letters, including reiterating the recommendations made by HM Coroner Mr Thomas after the Harrow Court inquest. Mr Wiseman made a further recommendation to have “… Building Regulations amended to ensure ALL [sic] cables, not just fire alarm cables, are supported by fire-resistant cable supports”. Mr Wiseman recommended an “amendment to BS 7671 (2008) …” to achieve this. Such changes would invite a proactive approach by installers to prevent such tragedies occurring again. Sounds like common sense when you know the history right? This ultimately led to the changes within Amendment 3 to BS7671 17th edition which included for the first time a possible solution to this issue. But it also brought confusion through a lack of clarity. The
24 NOVEMBER 2023 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER
amendment stated; “21.11.201 WIRING SYSTEMS IN ESCAPE ROUTES SHALL BE SUPPORTED SUCH THAT THEY WILL NOT BE LIABLE TO PREMATURE COLLAPSE IN THE EVENT OF FIRE”. Wonderful and not before time I’m sure we all agree, however, what is the criteria for an “escape route”? We have seen some weird and wonderful interpretations of this here at LINIAN, including only using metallic fixings over doorways or in common areas. The fact of the matter is that whatever area that is between a building occupant or member of the emergency services and the exit is the “escape route”. It became evident that further clarity on the matter was requires urgently. In response to this the guidance was further updated to remove the reference to escape routes within the release of BS7671 18th Edition. Arguably this took things too far the other way. Installers were now faced with having to support cabling “in all areas not just escape routes”. Again, installers were left to interpret this without much further guidance. AMENDMENT 2 Then comes Amendment 2 to BS7671 18th Edition in 2022. This is where it all went a bit wrong…in short, the amendment effectively prohibited installers from installing anything other than life safety systems and cleaners' outlets within the main circulation areas of buildings. Not

ideal considering these tend to be the areas where main containment, submains and final circuits tend to run. This leads us to present day and the release of the fabled “Corrigendum”. This clarified that the regulations would apply only to protected escape routes such as firefighting lobbies, shafts or stairwells. Installers have many things to consider when selecting appropriate cable supports to use. The architectural and structural design, proximity of other services, interior design features and the risk and consequence of failure to name a few. In order to comply with the most recent
regulations, installers are required to navigate the sea of solutions with a varying degree of technical suitability and select suitable fixings to be installed in the correct manner. Until now there has been little guidance on this, however, the 2022 release of “Guide to Premature Collapse” by BEAMA is a great place to start (free to download from the BEAMA website). This document offers clarifications on things such as stairwells, temperature zones and acceptable hanging loops. I have often stated in technical and sales presentations that LINIAN sell not only cable clips but also peace of mind.
LINIAN products are tested to the same standard as enhanced soft skin fire cables. That’s two hours at 1000°C plus burn and impact test. They also require no screws or plastic plugs which always carry the risk of melting in the event of a fire. Given these products are cost effective, faster to install than traditional methods and tested to the highest standard, if installers are in any doubt as to whether fixings are compliant, suitable, required etc then why take the risk? ADDED VALUE If as a wholesaler you can differentiate yourself as a solutions provider rather than as a stockist for cable management solutions then you will win more valuable business according to Simon Hudson-Smith, CEO at The Hudson Group.
P
roviding support for wholesalers, such as offering design expertise and the development of specials, has enabled the Hudson Group to grow into a significant British manufacturer over the last 30 years. Manufacturers and wholesalers are after the same thing: selling solutions to contractors, where both parties benefit from the sale. It’s why Hudson seeks to differentiate itself from larger international cable management suppliers and offer a more service orientated business. And it’s proved a successful strategy. It all started 30 years ago as RMS, a specialist cable management wholesaler who worked with different suppliers. The company soon realised that it needed to offer something different and opened a dedicated manufacturing facility for cable containment that could provide contractors with the support and flexibility that they
needed through wholesalers. And so, 25 years ago Armorduct was born as its manufacturing facility for trunking, tray, basket, floor systems and bespoke specials. It was, and still is, their capability and willingness to produce “specials” that makes them stand out. It could be for anything from modifying standard products to designing and producing bespoke containment solutions. Fast-forward to today and both of these businesses have their own specialisms. RMS provides expert modular and offsite fabrication services for demanding, fastinstall cable containment solutions and Armorduct designs and manufactures high volume standard and bespoke steel cable management systems which includes cable trunking, tray, basket and floor boxes. Both go to market through wholesaler partners. It enables you to tap into their expertise to offer contractors a flexible
solution that can help them meet their needs whether it’s to meet a tight time deadline, a tight budget or a unique product. Future plans This year Hudson has extended its expertise. It has launched Milton Cable Management Systems, which is working in partnership with the Wibe Group to help relaunch and support another brand steeped in history – Mita. Like its two sister companies, Milton will have its own specialist area, in this case supplying Mita GRP and cable containment designed for corrosive and hazardous environments. The reason for our success is simple.

CABLE MANAGEMENT
We provide you with the expertise to help sell a cable containment solution. We have designed our business to be responsive for all of your customers’ projects; whether they are installing a system for an industrial unit refurb or for the largest offsite prefabricated modular electrical and building services solution in Europe. At our heart we are an approachable company, many of us have worked as electricians, so we know what your customers need and because we are a UK manufacturer with stocks on hand we can deliver to branch or site quickly. MEETING TIGHT DEADLINES We know that your customers often have tight deadlines and we have to help you meet them. It’s this approachability and responsiveness that has shaped our organisation. It means, for example, that Armorduct has a specialist section within its manufacturing facility dedicated to producing bespoke items. This could be for something as simple as cutting trunking or tray to length for the contractor or creating bespoke items to meet a particular need. It means that it can produce or customise products rapidly for your customers without having to stop its production line.
If a contractor needs a system that is ready to fit with all the bends and accessories then we are on hand to deliver such a system quickly. This will save them the frustration of waiting for delivery and help optimise their time on site with a simple to assemble system that needs minimal or no cutting and drilling. FIT FOR THE FUTURE The last few years have posed a number of challenges for the wholesaler. Both Covid and Brexit have affected the supply chain and the reliable delivery of products. As a British manufacturer, the Hudson Group is nimbler than those relying on overseas supply and it is structured to be responsive when you need a solution for your customer quickly. Contractors are also suffering due to a lack of labour. While there may be plenty of work, their ability to meet tight deadlines and not disappoint their existing customers is a real challenge. Hudson offers you a solution that can them help overcome these issues with modular and specially designed systems in addition to standardised solutions. We are also exploring the use of new more sustainable materials offering better

performance at broadly the same price as galvanised steel. A good example is Magnelis, an alloyed steel that doesn’t need dipping into baths of molten zinc to provide corrosion resistance. It is also selfhealing so if the contractor does need to cut it, there is no need for them to treat the cut ends, unlike galvanised steel. With the Hudson Group marking 30 years in business this year, it has the same values as it has always had. This responsiveness to the wholesaler and contractor for projects of any size, makes us nimbler than larger international competitors. It also means that we are faster to evolve and meet new challenges. And finally, as a British Manufacturer, we are well placed to meet your supply challenges quickly. The next 30 years will see us develop further, continuing to improve our service by being a local manufacturer who works closely with wholesalers to help the contractor. We sum up this philosophy as Bigger, Better, British.

CABLE MANAGEMENT
EXPANSION PACT Having expanded its warehouse capacity to meet the growing demand for its extensive range of products, Scolmore was able to look to group company Unicrimp for the required cabling solutions for its vast 252,000ft2 facility.
T
he 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations 2019 (BS7671) came into force on 1st January 2019 and contained significant changes that relate directly to fire safety and the performance of installations should a fire occur. All cables throughout an installation (not just in escape routes) shall be secured with fire resistant cable supports and fixings, i.e. fully metallic cable clips, ties, and fixings, including within plastic cable management systems. With a total of 18 distribution boards required to cover the electrical supply across the huge warehouse facility, a vast number of products from Unicrimp’s
regulation-compliant Q-Fire range have been installed as part of the cable management solution. As well as securing the expanse of cabling accommodated on the ground floor space, a new mezzanine level has been created to accommodate significantly more storage space. In addition, a new charging point facility for the company’s fleet of electric forklift trucks has been installed. The 18th Edition wiring regulations stipulate that cable support systems must be constructed with materials that will withstand premature collapse caused by direct exposure to heat. There are no
applications excluded – trunking, conduit and cabling fixed to surfaces of the building or attached to cable support systems must all have fire-resistant supports in place. All products within Unicrimp’s Q-Fire range meet BS7671 (18th Edition) requirements and are designed to prevent cables from premature collapse during a fire and in doing so, to keep emergency services and the public safe. The Q-Fire range currently comprises Fire-safe Twin and earth cable clips, saddle clips and P clips, stainless steel mounts, metal cable cleats, all-round banding and masonry screws. Expanded choice The comprehensive range provides installers with an expanded choice of fixing solutions, suitable across a range of applications and environments – helping them to satisfy the latest wiring regulations. Products used to secure the cables throughout the warehouse facility include fire safe metal cable clips, cable ties, saddle space bars, glands, all-round banding, stainless steel mounts, metal cable cleats and connectors. Cable ties have been used in cable containment; the glands in the distribution boards and

rotary isolator switches; the cable cleats have been used to secure armoured cable to walls and the metal saddles have been used to mount metal conduit to the walls for cable containment. Last year the company extended its QFire range to incorporate 18th Edition compliant fire-rated metal twin and earth cable clips in red and white options. These fire-rated T&E cable clips are manufactured from zinc plated carbon steel and are available in two sizes – 12.5mm and 4-6mm – and in a choice of uncoated or with a grey PPA LSF coating. The LSF coating provides long term protection for metal clips, as well as added protection for the cable during and after installation. The company also added 20mm and 25mm white metal saddle bar spacers to its Q-Fire range last year. They are an ideal
solution for providing support and spacing between conduits and mounting surface and their use will help installers to comply with the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. Every effort should be made to use cable products of the highest quality to ensure that risks are minimised. All
Unicrimp products are manufactured under stringent quality control systems and are fully compliant with the very latest industry regulations. TO LEARN MORE VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/WAO007

STAYING ALIVE Steve Dunning, Managing Director of Martindale Electric, explains how wholesalers can help their customers stay safe around electricity.
A
few years ago, Martindale Electric launched the ALIVE campaign, a memorable safe isolation procedure to help reduce electricity-related injuries and fatalities in the workplace. In creating our “ALIVE” message, we distinguish between good working practice (to complement our complete 12 step approach) and the five vital steps that absolutely must be carried out for your own protection and to prevent loss of life. ALIVE stands for: l Approved kit - Before starting, make sure your equipment meets all legal safety standards (BS EN61243-3). l Lock out - Identify the point of isolation, lock it off and place warning tags onto the equipment. l Initial Prove - Test your Voltage Indicator (VI) against the proving unit to make sure it is working properly. l Voltage test - Use your VI to confirm dangerous voltage levels are not in the circuit you are about to work on. l Ensure - Prove and retest the VI against the proving unit to ensure it is functioning before working on the circuit. For electrical wholesalers, stocking a good range of safety equipment and safety accessories, such as Lock Off kits and Proving Devices alongside standard electrical test equipment, helps customers stay safe and adhere to the ALIVE message. The heart of the ALIVE campaign is the use of proving devices, which play a pivotal role in the safety process. These devices are essential in validating the functionality of voltage indicators, test lamps and meters. By using a suitable
proving device both before and after using these instruments, electricians ensure that they are working correctly, complying with the stringent Electricity at Work Regulations. Plus four Martindale Electric has introduced four new proving units to its range, designed to streamline the safety verification process for electrical professionals. The new Proving Units - PD230SRD, PD440SRD, PD440SRDX, and PD690SRD - are fast and easy to use, offering instant test voltage for both high and low impedance voltage indicators, test lamps and meters. One of the key features of these proving units is their versatility. They provide AC/DC output, which can be easily selected via a push-button switch, and offer stepped voltage outputs that match two-pole tester thresholds. This flexibility is essential, as it allows electricians to match the proving unit's output voltage

with the voltage range of the instrument being tested. To further simplify coordination, the proving units are colourcoded to match Martindale voltage indicators, making it easy for professionals to identify the right equipment for the job. Among the new proving units, the PD440SRDX stands out with its unique CALCHECK feature. This feature simplifies the verification of insulation and low resistance ranges on 18th Edition multifunction testers, a critical step in ensuring the reliability of these testers. The CALCHECK function is particularly valuable for identifying potential calibration issues with multifunction testers, before certifying new wiring installations or conducting condition reports. It's also a procedure recognised by electrical contractor assessment bodies. Additionally, all the new SRD and SRDX models feature stepped voltage LEDs with thresholds that align with most voltage

TEST EQUIPMENT
indicators and two-pole testers. This alignment ensures precision and accuracy in testing, a vital aspect of electrical safety. While the PD440SRDX and other advanced models cater to specific needs,
Martindale Electric also recognises the importance of simplicity for all electrical contractors. Hence, the introduction of the PD230SRD and the more advanced PD440SRDX. The PD230SRD Proving Unit serves as the ideal entrylevel proving device, facilitating the checking of basic voltage indicators. It is perfect for proving both low and high impedance voltage indicators, test lamps and two-pole testers. With its MG3 high-strength magnetic hanger and robust over-moulded, low
profile design, it is convenient and durable. The unit boasts a long battery life, complete with a low battery indicator and an auto power-off function. For those requiring a higher voltage output of up to 440V and additional testing features, the PD440SRDX is the go-to option. This model, while still userfriendly, provides more versatility for working with 18th Edition installation testers. Its precise, stepped voltage outputs are tailored to match two-pole tester thresholds, making it indispensable for electrical contractors.

Unicrimp continues to expand its Q-Nect range of lever connectors and junction boxes. The latest additions to the range are IP66-rated, weatherproof junction boxes with semi-transparent lids. The addition of the semi-transparent lid takes the IP Box to the next level, allowing you to see the inside connections without compromising the integrity of the enclosure. The Q-Nect IP66 junction box is designed to make installations more efficient. It can house four of the 3 port lever connectors using the 360° detachable cradle and with a curved lid, it provides additional space for wires. The lid is locked using quarter turn fasteners. The semi-transparent lids are available on the IP66 Weatherproof Enclosure that is furnished with four X three way lever connectors. The junction box features ten membrane entry points. Protection against moisture and dust is enhanced with the self-sealing membranes which provide a faster and more secure cable entry whilst at the same time maintaining the IP66 rating. Installers have the option of using up to eight M20 cable glands with the junction box. KNIGHTSBRIDGE
WISKA
HIGH BAY LEDS
CABLE GLANDS
The new Potentia LED high bay range from Knightsbridge provides an ideal solution for industrial applications requiring versatility, flexibility, durability, control and performance. The high bays, which come in two sizes, incorporate tri-wattage and dual-CCT functions along with other innovative features to deliver long-life and powerful illumination. The high bays feature a selectable CCT switch, allowing users to adjust the colour temperature between 4000K and 5000K according to preference; and offer wattages of either 100W, 120W and 150W or 150W, 180W and 200W depending on model. Suitable for the toughest industrial environments, Potentia are rated to IK08, making them resilient in the face of impacts, and also IP65, ensuring resistance against dust and water ingress. This makes them well-suited for installations in challenging indoor or outdoor settings where protection against moisture and debris is crucial.
For many years, WISKA’s Combi Junction Box has been used with BW/CW glands for terminating SWA cables under BS 6121. These glands have a limiting IP rating as standard, require the use of a shroud, and often are used with an earth tag. The use of the earth tag often results in the integratory of the junction box being damaged to ensure earth continuity. WISKA has now developed a superior solution for these types of installations in the form of ShieldGLAND, an IP68 plastic/brass hybrid cable gland suitable for armoured and SY cables. Available in M20S, M20L, M25 and M32 sizes, it offers superior protection and works seamlessly with the Combi Junction Box series. The ShieldGLAND replaces the use of the conventional BW/CW gland for cable termination and offers superior protection against dust, dirt and water.

Following the recent ban on the production of fluorescent tube lamps, Megaman has launched a new T8 LED tube lamp range. It provides an ideal option for a low-energy retrofit replacement - without the need for any rewiring. As of 25th August 2023, all fluorescent tube lamps have been banned from sale in the UK, in line with the European Commission’s eco-design and the Restriction of the use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directives. Megaman’s new T8 LED tube lamp range provides the ideal replacement with instant and significant energy savings thanks to a high lumen output per watt. Built to last and easy to retrofit, the tubes are compatible with conventional ballast (magnetic ballast) and mains powered fixtures, so they can be quickly and easily swapped for fluorescent tubes. A smooth appearance and even light distribution are achieved thanks to a wide exit window with several colour temperature options available. Finally, an optional shatterproof PET coating is available to prevent the breakup of the glass tube if damaged – a crucial addition for schools and other public buildings where safety is paramount. Providing the highest levels of efficiency, the T8 Professional range tube lamp is rated Energy Class B and can deliver efficacies of up to 150 lumens per watt. 9, 16, 22 and 24.5W options are available, each providing an excellent estimated lifespan of up to 30,000 hours.

T
o help consumers eliminate the frustration of keeping their electric toothbrush charged, ProofVision has developed a unique range of electric toothbrush chargers that can be installed by an electrician neatly into a bathroom wall, like a shaver socket, removing the need for charging cables, while saving space and reducing countertop clutter. After numerous discussions with many electrical wholesalers, ProofVision redesigned its in-wall toothbrush charger point of sale (POS) materials to help wholesalers sell more by making its offering relevant, attractive and easy for wholesalers to display on either a slat wall or countertop. The ProofVision electric toothbrush chargers are unique and offer numerous benefits to the end user, however they still remain under the radar for some consumers, and electricians too. Therefore, ProofVision offers a range of POS materials to help consumers and electricians discover its products and visualise how they would look in a bathroom setting. Customise and complement Designed specifically for electrical wholesalers, the POS available from
ProofVision includes traditional countertop displays, slatted wall displays, printed marketing collateral and digital assets to drive online sales. The A3 Foamex slat wall display board features the three models available in the TBCharge range, with optional faceplate finishes of black, brushed steel, and polished steel available, highlighting how consumers can customise the charger to complement their bathroom décor. Also available is a collection of dummy display units that come with a double-sided sticky backing, making them easy to display over a sink or bathroom suite. The dummy units draw attention to the product in-store, highlighting that they can streamline the end user’s bathroom by removing the need for charging cables, while offering the convenience of having a charged toothbrush right where they need it. To display with the TBCharge dummy units, an A5 card advises that the chargers are compatible with Braun and Oral B electric toothbrushes. Where space is at a premium, ProofVision has created a three-sided A5 countertop display that showcases the models and faceplates available. Additional information is also accessible via a QR code linked to a landing page, where customers can explore the range further. Wholesalers can also offer customers an A5 TBCharge range brochure to take home and decide which charger and faceplate best fits their bathroom design.

Ayça Donaghy, CEO of the Lighting Industry Association, discusses the organisation’s vision and how electrical wholesalers can contribute.
A
s the CEO of the Lighting Industry Association (LIA), I am delighted to share our vision, mission and the pivotal role that electrical wholesalers can play in shaping the future of the lighting industry. With 216 members, representing over £2 billion in turnover and more than 11,000 employees in the UK, the LIA is Europe's largest trade association dedicated to lighting. Our purpose, encapsulated in the statement "Guided by our dedication to positive change, we enable collaboration, elevate quality and empower our members and team to shape a compliant, inclusive, innovative and sustainable future lighting industry" drives our actions every day. Our mission revolves around three key pillars: Support, Represent, and Connect. We provide comprehensive support services, technical expertise, training, product testing and certification
to our members. Simultaneously, we serve as advocates for their interests at all levels, elevating industry standards and facilitating invaluable networking opportunities. Our overarching vision is "Empowering light, illuminating tomorrow”. As we move into 2024, we're excited to share the progress we've made and the path we're charting for the future. Listening to industry voices In 2023, we embarked on a journey to listen and build a stronger community within our industry. This entailed getting closer to our members and the broader industry, enhancing visibility into our activities and learning through trial and error. We believe that creating a collaborative environment is essential for fostering innovation and sustainability.
Building strong foundations In 2024, our focus will shift towards building a solid foundation to propel the association and the lighting industry forward. This includes renewing our IT infrastructure and implementing new Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems, Learning Management Systems (LMS) and a revamped website. These improvements will enhance the quality and accessibility of our services, making it easier for members and the industry to access valuable resources. Key focus areas for 2024 In 2024, our emphasis will be on three central themes: Advocacy and representation: We will continue to act as the unified voice of our industry in government affairs, using our knowledge, technical expertise and strategic approach to drive positive change. Knowledge and Learning: We are transforming our industry training offerings, offering blended learning opportunities for those interested in specialising in lighting. Our courses will include self-paced and tutor-led elements, providing a comprehensive educational experience led by LIA's experts.

Quality and Compliance: We remain committed to ensuring that lighting products meet rigorous quality and safety standards. LIA certification and verification schemes, such as TM66 Assured for circularity, and others focusing on product conformity and photometric accuracy, will continue to be cornerstones of our efforts. The role of electrical wholesalers Electrical wholesalers are essential partners in advancing the lighting industry's goals. Here are some ways wholesalers can contribute: Require LIA membership: Wholesalers can require LIA membership from their
lighting suppliers. This step ensures that products are sourced from reputable sources, offering reassurance to the industry and consumers alike. All LIA members undergo annual reviews, including quality audits and technical file submission reviews. We conduct all of the checks on our members, so you don’t have to! Promote certification and verification schemes: Wholesalers can actively promote LIA's certification and verification schemes to their customers and insist on them from their suppliers. These schemes guarantee the quality, sustainability and performance of lighting products, offering peace of mind to all stakeholders.
Stock rotation for compliance: Wholesalers can play a crucial role in supporting compliance efforts, particularly with labelling changes which came into effect, with a six-month extension, on 1st October. Wholesalers supported us by rotating stock on shelves to ensure that older labelled products were sold first and promptly relabelling any remaining stock with the new A-G label. These types of efforts have, and will, continue to contribute to industry-wide quality assurance. Engagement in industry advocacy: Wholesalers can engage in industry advocacy efforts alongside the LIA. This participation strengthens our collective voice and amplifies the impact of our advocacy initiatives. Lighting expertise: Lighting is undeniably one of the most fascinating, complex and vital elements of our daily lives. It shapes our environments, enhances our experiences and contributes significantly to energy efficiency and sustainability. At the LIA, we recognise that expertise in lighting is crucial for providing informed guidance, designing effective lighting systems and ensuring the highest standards of quality and performance. We invite electrical wholesalers to embrace the opportunity to become true lighting experts through our specialised training programmes and bi-weekly Tuesday Tech Talks at Two which are open to anyone interested. You can find out more and register onto the upcoming Talks using this link: https://forms.office.com/e/VpgrEtx9uX In conclusion, the LIAis committed to driving positive change, compliance, innovation, and sustainability within the lighting industry. We invite electrical wholesalers to join us in this journey, as together, we "empower light and illuminate tomorrow."
