GOLD MEDAL FOR EVOLUTION
Welcome to the March issue of PEW! I have been working from home for the last two weeks and am now in recovery mode having had my old bathroom ripped out and a new one put in. While at home I did manage to catch bits of the Winter Olympics and see what new and creative ways they had managed to come up with to hurl people down an icy slope as quickly as possible.
“ Fast forward about 100 years and, with a lot of innovation and progress in between, we are living in the age of smart buildings.”
Out of curiosity I started delving into the history of the Winter Olympics. First held in Chamonix in 1924 and made up of five sports (bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, Nordic skiing and skating), it has evolved over the years with new subdisciplines introduced, categories dropped and others modernised – for example military patrol eventually became the biathlon event. There have also been some surprising sports that, while never introduced as an official event, were showcased as demonstrations at various Olympics, such as skijoring (being towed on skis behind a horse or dogs), acroski (ski ballet), and speed skiing – where athletes descended a steep, straight course in a tight aerodynamic tuck at speeds of up to 130mph! Unsurprisingly, concerns about safety prevented that from ever becoming an official event.
So yes, the Olympic Games, both summer and winter, have evolved but at their core remain the key values of excellence, respect and friendship which have helped the games to endure for so long.
“Where are you going with this?” you might ask. Well, Theben’s journey began just before the first Winter Olympics. The topic of ‘sustainability’ might be considered a very modern movement but the thought process behind it goes back a long way. At Theben, as explained in this month’s Soapbox column, it was precision engineer Paul Schwenk who started developing time switches in 1921, with the principle that buildings don’t need to run at full tilt all the time. Fast forward about 100 years, with a lot of innovation and progress in between, we are living in the age of smart buildings.
Evolution runs throughout the built environment, including the electrical wholesaler, ever since G. Binswanger and Company, later to become the General Electric Company, first started selling electrical components over the counter in London in the late 19th century. In the 21st century traditional distribution methods are being challenged by rapid changes in customer expectations (especially digital buyers), sustainability requirements, and broader shifts in the energy and construction sectors. To evolve and thrive, wholesalers are rethinking their business models across technology, operations, sustainability and customer experience. In fact it’s evolving faster than an average curling match seems to take.
Enjoy the issue!

HANDS-ON HELP
Debt and financial stress can feel like insurmountable barriers, but Isaac’s story shows how the Electrical Industries Charity’s (EIC) Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) and Practical Support Programme (PPP) work hand in hand to provide comprehensive help.
Tailored support
Isaac, a professional working in the electrical industry, found himself drowning in debt. His anxiety grew as creditor calls increased and repayments became impossible to manage. When he reached out to the EIC, the Charity’s EAP was his first touchpoint – a confidential service providing tailored emotional and financial support to employees in crisis.
Through the EAP, Isaac was connected with a case manager who listened to his concerns and arranged immediate assistance.
Recognising that Isaac also needed specialist debt advice, the EIC linked him with StepChange, where he accessed the Breathing Space scheme – giving him legal protection from creditor action and crucial breathing room to reassess his finances.
How EIC’s Employee Assistance Programme and Practical Support Programme Aided Isaac’s Debt Recovery
But financial help alone isn’t always enough. Isaac’s situation also required practical support to reduce ongoing costs and provide stability. That’s where the EIC’s Practical Support Programme (PPP) comes in. This innovative initiative harnesses the skills and resources of industry stakeholders – offering services, materials, and expertise on a voluntary basis to support people in need. Whether
it’s building modifications to improve accessibility, essential repairs, or donating specialist equipment, the PPP taps into the electrical and energy sectors’ wealth of knowledge and resources to make a real difference.
Comprehensive care
Through the PPP, electrical companies and professionals can contribute valuable practical assistance that directly benefits individuals like Isaac, helping to ease their financial burden in ways that cash support alone cannot. While Isaac’s debt recovery primarily focused on financial restructuring and debt advice, the PPP exemplifies the broader and vital ways the industry collaborates with the Charity to provide comprehensive care.
Isaac benefited not only from financial aid and counselling but also from the reassurance that his industry stood ready to support him practically, should the need arise. This combination of financial, emotional, and practical support from the EIC creates a holistic approach – ensuring individuals like Isaac receive the full spectrum of help necessary to regain control, rebuild confidence, and move toward a more secure future.
If you are part of the electrical or energy industries and want to contribute your time, skills, or materials, consider registering with the Practical Support Programme. Your involvement can dramatically reduce costs and improve outcomes for those struggling in your community.
FACE TO FACE RECOLIGHT
In this month’s Face to Face we speak to Nigel Harvey, Chief Executive at Recolight, to hear his views on a more sustainable lighting industry and the implementation of the circular economy.
QWhy should electrical wholesalers offer a free lamp and WEEE recycling service to customers?
A. There are many good reasons. First and foremost, because it is a legal requirement: Any wholesaler selling electrical products that could be used by a consumer, must provide a free of charge take back on a
one-for-one basis. So if, for example, an electrical contractor buys 50 GU10 LED lamps, they have the right to return around 50 similar lamps to the point of purchase, for recycling. In addition, providing a WEEE take back service is a vital way in which wholesalers can act more sustainably. That also provides an additional service to their customers, and can increase footfall.
Q What are Recolight and how can they help with this?
A. Recolight was set up by the lighting industry as a not-for-profit to provide collection and recycling of waste lighting to meet obligations under the WEEE regulations. That means Recolight offer wholesalers, and others, free collection and recycling of waste lamps, subject to minimum quantities. The company also provide low cost collection of waste luminaires and batteries.
Q Why is the circular economy so important and what difference will the release of the Government’s ‘Circular Economy Growth Plan’ make?
A. The circular economy is a vital way in which sustainability can be embedded into commercial operations, and is an essential part of the effort to tackle climate change. A circular economy seeks to keep existing products in use for longer, to repair or upgrade them where possible, and to only replace and recycle them where that is not an option. The government set up a taskforce to make recommendations on how to implement a circular economy, and we expect to see a consultation on the proposals this Spring.
Q How can wholesalers engage better with the circular economy?
A. The circular economy is about reuse, repair, remanufacture, and upgrade. There is a material opportunity for any wholesalers that can start to provide such services, either themselves, or in partnership with other organisations.
QCan you tell us a bit about what Recolight does?
A. Beyond providing collection and recycling of lighting, Recolight is extremely active in supporting the transition to a circular economy. So Recolight organise Circular Lighting Live, the UK’s only conference dedicated to the circular economy and the lighting industry. Recolight also sponsor Circular Lighting Report on LinkedIn, a news service celebrating all the sustainability achievements of the lighting industry. And the company also helps to ensure that unsold remaindered stock can be used in
charities or other social enterprises rather than being recycled.
QWhat are EPDs and what EPD related services does Recolight offer to manufacturers?
A. Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) provide tangible ways in which manufacturers can accurately evidence the full sustainability of the products they sell. They therefore allow specifiers and endusers to choose products based on an independent third party verified statement of the environmental impacts of products. Recolight provide a “one-off EPD” service that helps manufacturers prepare an EPD. That includes support in gathering the data required, entering it into the OneClick LCA platform, preparing a draft EPD, finalising it, and then submitting it to EPD Hub for independent verification. The
service is subject to a flat all-inclusive fee.
QWhat can we expect to see from Recolight and the wider lighting industry in 2026?
A. Circular Lighting Live will be back again on 8th October 2026 in London, showcasing the latest developments and regulatory changes taking place in the circular economy. Prior to that, the Government will have consulted on possible changes to implement its circular economy growth plan, and the outcome of that consultation should be available. That will make Circular Lighting Live in 2026 the perfect opportunity to understand the planned changes, and consequences.

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE
Elucian consumer units: Innovation, choice and confidence for today’s electrical contractor.
In a market shaped by tighter regulations, higher customer expectations and increasing demand for reliability, the consumer unit has become far more than a basic distribution board. Contractors now expect flexibility, compliance, ease of installation and longterm performance as standard. For electrical wholesalers, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity: stocking ranges that not only meet compliance, but actively support contractors in working faster, safer and with confidence.
It is within this evolving landscape that the Elucian range of single-phase and three-phase consumer units from Click Scolmore has established itself as a strong and increasingly popular choice across domestic, commercial and light industrial applications. Designed with contractor feedback at its core, the range delivers flexibility, future readiness and practical installation benefits that translate directly into repeat purchases at the trade counter.
Designed with contractors –stocked with confidence
One of the key reasons behind the success of the Elucian range lies in its contractor-led design philosophy. Elucian consumer units are engineered to address the practical challenges electricians face on site –from tight installation spaces to increasingly complex circuit protection requirements. For wholesalers, the breadth of the Elucian portfolio is a key strength. The range spans:
● Single-phase consumer units for domestic and small commercial projects
● Three-phase boards suited to larger commercial and light industrial installations
This allows contractors to specify a consistent brand across multiple project types, simplifying procurement and encouraging brand loyalty – an advantage for wholesalers looking to streamline stock lines without compromising choice.
Built for compliance and future readiness
With the ongoing emphasis on safety and compliance, consumer units must deliver confidence both today and in the future. Elucian units are designed to support modern protective devices and configurations, enabling installers to meet current standards while remaining adaptable to evolving requirements. Recent product developments have further enhanced the flexibility of the range, reinforcing its position as a dependable long-term option for wholesalers and contractors alike.

For contractors, the Elucian Single Width Energy Meter offers a reliable, compliant and installer-friendly solution that integrates seamlessly with the wider Elucian range. For wholesalers, it represents a high-demand, space-saving metering option that meets the growing need for accurate energy monitoring in modern electrical installations.
Elucian IP65 EV boards
Recent additions also include new IP65rated EV boards, developed to provide contractors with robust solutions tailored for the growing demand in electric vehicle charging installations.
As electric vehicle adoption accelerates across the UK, the role of dedicated EV boards has never been more critical. These specialist consumer units are designed to manage the unique electrical requirements of EV chargers, including high current loads, isolation, surge protection, and compliance with the latest wiring regulations. A purpose-built EV board not only ensures safety for homeowners and installers but also simplifies installation, reducing the risk of errors and downtime.
Temperature, durability and longevity
Particular attention has been given to material selection and overall build quality of the EV boards, ensuring long-term reliability. A key design consideration is the operational temperature of the devices installed within the EV board, allowing consistent performance in varying site conditions. Backed by third-party certification, our equipment is approved to operate within a temperature range of25°C to +40°C.
Where the EV board may be exposed to the elements, material durability has also been carefully considered. The enclosure materials are resistant to fading from prolonged sunlight exposure, and the powder-coated finish provides added protection against UV degradation. Elucian offers a three-year warranty for the protective devices and a 10-year warranty for the enclosures.
The Elucian EV Boards are available in multiple configurations, with protective devices –RCDs or RCBOs, and surge protection devices (SPDs) pre-fitted –allowing installers to complete projects faster while ensuring full compliance with UK wiring regulations. The units also include a free way for additional circuits, offering flexibility for future upgrades.
Available in a white or anthracite grey finish, the EV units feature multiple gland knockouts and come with a pre-fitted lock that provides safety from interference.
Three phase solutions gaining installer approval
Elucian’s three-phase consumer units continue to gain positive feedback from
Wide range of consumer unit sizes –available in usable configurations from seven ways to 19 ways. This offers flexibility to suit a variety of domestic and light commercial installations, from small dwellings to larger, more complex electrical systems.
Flush-fitting lid – provides a clean, lowprofile appearance once installed, making it suitable for visible locations while maintaining easy access for inspection and maintenance.
installers, with several features standing out:
Single-module 10kA
AFDD with integrated RCBO – a compact, single-module Arc Fault Detection Device combined with RCBO functionality, rated at 10kA.
Removable and reversible door –consumer unit features a fully removable door that can be reversed to suit left- or right-hand opening requirements.
Internal SPD and metering arrangement –Surge Protection Devices (SPD) and metering components are integrated within the consumer unit itself, rather than housed in a separate external enclosure.
125A and 250A flexibility – the board is designed to accommodate either 125A or 250A modules. This allows greater design flexibility, reduces panel space requirements, and supports future expansion or reconfiguration without major alterations.
Single phase range – built for flexibility
Some of the features and benefits of the Elucian single phase range that installers are shouting about include:
Compact RCBO design – engineered in a slim, miniature format, allowing more protection devices to be installed within the same enclosure. This improves space efficiency without compromising performance or compliance.
Bespoke laser etching
Further strengthening the Elucian proposition is an in-house laser etching service for singlephase consumer units. This allows contractors and businesses to personalise boards with logos, QR codes, technical information or circuit identification, adding a professional finish to installations.
Produced in-house at Scolmore Group’s headquarters, the service has already delivered close to 300 bespoke jobs, with almost 10,000 boards etched since launch – highlighting strong demand for customisation within the market.
A growing presence in a competitive market
The consumer unit sector remains highly competitive, yet Elucian’s steady growth suggests that contractors are increasingly prioritising practical performance, flexibility and trust over brand familiarity alone. As electrical installations continue to evolve in complexity, the demand for adaptable, well-designed distribution equipment will only increase.
With a comprehensive single-phase and three-phase offering, supported by recent product launches and a clear focus on installer needs, the Elucian range is well placed to remain a strong contender within the UK electrical contracting market.

ighting is increasingly expected to do more than provide basic illumination. It must support visual comfort, adapt to different activities and respond to changing conditions, while also helping to reduce energy use. As a result, lighting control is becoming a standard part of modern installations rather than a specialist addition.
LEDVANCE Direct Easy has been developed as a straightforward wireless control system that enables lighting to respond to how spaces are actually used, without adding complexity to installation
Nelo Neves, Managing Director at LEDVANCE UK, explains how the company is supporting better lighting through simple wireless control.
or commissioning. Direct Easy operates using Zigbee 3.0 wireless communication and is set up via Bluetooth using a smartphone app. This approach allows luminaires to be grouped and adjusted quickly, making it suitable for both new installations and refurbishment projects where layouts or occupancy patterns may change over time. Because no control wiring, gateways or cloud connections are
required, lighting can be configured locally and adapted later without disruption, which is particularly useful in occupied buildings such as offices, schools and retail environments.
A broader range of customers
As wireless control becomes more common on everyday projects, having accessible systems that do not require specialist configuration helps wholesalers support a broader range of customers, from maintenance contractors to small commercial installers.
Once installed, up to 40 luminaires can be grouped within a zone, allowing lighting to be tailored to specific areas rather than treating entire spaces as a single lighting environment. This supports more even light distribution across working areas, while allowing circulation routes or peripheral zones to operate at lower levels. From a lighting quality perspective, this helps avoid over-lighting and improves visual comfort by reducing unnecessary brightness contrasts within a space.
The system also supports daylight harvesting and presence detection, enabling lighting to respond automatically to available natural light and occupancy. When daylight levels are sufficient,
luminaires dim to maintain consistent illumination, while unoccupied areas can be reduced or switched off entirely. This not only lowers energy consumption but also helps maintain stable visual conditions throughout the day, reducing the risk of glare or excessive brightness when daylight levels fluctuate. When combined, these features can deliver energy savings of up to 50% compared to LED installations without lighting control.
Direct Easy supports dimming, Tunable White and dynamic RGB control where compatible luminaires are used, allowing light levels and colour temperatures to be adapted to different tasks or times of day. In practical terms, this means cooler light can be used in task-focused environments to support concentration, while warmer tones may be more appropriate in social, hospitality or customer-facing spaces. This flexibility allows lighting to contribute to the overall function and atmosphere of a space, rather than remaining fixed at a single setting.
“ The move towards wireless control reflects a broader shift in the market towards lighting that is efficient, adaptable and responsive.”
Visual comfort
The system is designed to work with Zigbee 3.0 compatible LEDVANCE luminaires, which offer high luminous efficacy and low flicker performance. High efficacy ensures required light levels are achieved with lower power consumption, while low flicker supports visual comfort, particularly in environments where people spend long periods under artificial lighting. Combining efficient luminaires with responsive control enables both lighting quality and operational efficiency to be addressed together as part of a single system.
Adaptability over the life of a building is also an important consideration. Direct
Easy installations can remain as simple, locally controlled wireless systems, or they can be expanded and integrated into more comprehensive lighting management platforms if future requirements change. Because the system is based on open Zigbee 3.0 standards, upgrades can be achieved without replacing luminaires or control devices, supporting longer system lifecycles and more sustainable refurbishment strategies.
For wholesalers, installers and endusers, the move towards wireless control reflects a broader shift in the market towards lighting that is efficient, adaptable and responsive. Having accessible control solutions available alongside luminaires supports installers who are increasingly asked to deliver lighting that balances performance, comfort and energy efficiency across a wide range of everyday projects.
Workwear is no longer worn only on site. Nick Pouslon at Carhartt explains what electricians now expect from their clothing and how wholesalers can respond with varied, flexible ranges.
WORKWEAR WORKING OVERTIME
The right workwear is important in every job and it should always be tough, durable and safe. But times are changing and workwear now has to do more than stand up to the job. The same clothing is often worn from the first fix of the day through wholesaler visits and into the evening or weekend. Durability still matters, but it is no longer the only factor influencing buying decisions. Comfort, fit and how workwear looks off site are increasingly part of the equation.
For electrical wholesalers, this creates an opportunity to strengthen workwear as a repeat-purchase category. Core, hardwearing staples remain essential, but there is growing demand for kit that feels comfortable and presentable beyond the job. Ranges that reflect this reality are better placed to support consistent sales and customer loyalty.
Broadening choice
Black and dark colours continue to be a reliable seller and should remain readily available, but alternative colours and finishes are gaining interest. Neutral and heritage tones such as brown, grey, olive and cream offer a cleaner, less uniform look that many electricians are comfortable wearing away from site.
For wholesalers, responding to this demand doesn’t require large or complex ranges. Introducing a limited number of alternative colourways across proven products can offer customers choice while keeping stock manageable. Smaller items such as beanies or graphic T-shirts can also be used to add variety, providing easy add-ons at the counter without increasing risk. They are also typically lower in cost, simpler to size and well suited to repeat purchasing, making them a practical way to build basket spend.
“ What has changed is the expectation that comfort should last throughout the day.”
Denim adapted
Denim is a good example of how established workwear categories have been adapted to suit modern working patterns. Traditionally chosen for toughness, denim could feel stiff, particularly when kneeling, climbing ladders or working overhead. Stretch technologies such as Carhartt’s Rugged Flex add flexibility while retaining durability. The added movement makes a noticeable difference on site, improving comfort during
physical tasks. At the same time, stretch denim has a more relaxed feel that works away from the job. For wholesalers, it offers a familiar category that appeals to electricians looking for practical workwear without it feeling overly industrial.
The same applies to duck fabric. Known for its resistance to abrasion, tearing and wind, duck has long been associated with demanding environments. Adding a small amount of Rugged Flex improves mobility without compromising strength, making it better suited to long days that combine physical work with travel and site visits.
Comfort that holds up
Performance remains non-negotiable. Electricians still expect workwear to cope with physical tasks, changing weather and long days. What has changed is the expectation that comfort should last throughout the day.
Waterproofing is a clear example. Jackets that block rain are essential, but if they trap heat and moisture they can quickly become uncomfortable during physical work where the wearer builds up a sweat. Breathable waterproof fabrics allow moisture vapour to escape, helping the wearer stay dry without feeling cold or clammy.
Technologies such as Carhartt’s Storm Defender are designed to keep out heavy
rain but have a breathable membrane which allows internal moisture to evaporate. This kind of technology is particularly useful when working hard outdoors in inclement weather. Durable water repellent (DWR) coatings also play an important role here, causing light rain to bead and run off the fabric while maintaining breathability, making garments more suitable for variable site conditions.
Any build-up of sweat can leave the wearer cold and clammy once it cools on the skin. Cotton might be soft and comfortable to wear but doesn’t make a good base layer as it stays damp. The trade need fabrics that wick sweat, dry quickly and help control odour keep clothes feeling fresher for longer, which matters when workwear is worn beyond site hours. Carhartt Force, for example, is made from a blend of cotton and polyester. It’s soft and comfortable but pulls moisture away from the skin and helps reduce odour build-up, giving all day comfort.
“ Demand for lighter, more breathable workwear is particularly evident in women’s workwear.”
Lighter layers and women’s workwear
For electrical wholesalers, it is really important to supply women’s workwear ranges designed specifically for the trade rather than adapted from men’s products. As demand grows, having appropriate stock available helps support customers and strengthens the overall workwear offer.
Demand for lighter, more breathable workwear is particularly evident in women’s workwear, where those in the trade have been clear about wanting garments that don’t feel heavy or restrictive but still stand up to demanding environments.
New fabric developments are helping address this. Carhartt’s Tencel Fibre Series for women uses Tencel Lyocell fibres to create clothing that is lighter and softer
while remaining durable. This range is breathable, regulates temperature and prevents moisture build-up, making clothing made of Tencel Lyocell suitable for both work and wear away from site. The range includes lightweight T-shirts, overshirts and joggers designed with practical use in mind. Stocking these lighter layers offers an opportunity to supply an underserved part of the trade and build longer-term customer loyalty.
Workwear is constantly developing with new technologies and better choice. Electricians still expect durability and performance but they are also buying with comfort, versatility and appearance in mind. Offering greater choice and clearly communicating product benefits can help build stronger customer relationships, encourage repeat purchasing and support consistent sales.
STEP CHANGE
Peter Lawson, Brand Manager for Overland Shoes, explains how wholesalers can help close the PPE gender gap and, in turn, reap the financial benefits.
Imagine the scene. It’s early morning on a new jobsite. You have eight hours ahead of you, most of which will be spent on your feet on hard, unforgiving surfaces. You pull on your safety boots and immediately feel it –they’re too wide, poorly shaped and uncomfortable. You’d ask for a better option but you already know there isn’t one because, as always, the only choice is a generic, male-designed safety boot. So, you make-do with footwear that was never designed for you and, worse still, may actively compromise your safety.
Sounds absurd, doesn’t it? Yet for many female electricians and other tradeswomen, this is the norm. For decades, safety footwear design has centred almost exclusively on the male workforce. When women have been considered at all, it has often been through a superficial ‘shrink it and pink it’ approach, rather than addressing the genuine anatomical differences between men and women. The result is a market saturated with products that simply don’t fit a significant and growing portion of the workforce.
The irony in this is that, instead of protecting the worker, poorly-fitting safety footwear can become a danger in itself. To put this into perspective, electricians and
other trade workers walk an average of 10,393 steps per day. That’s nearly five miles every shift, or up to 25 miles each week. Most people wouldn’t dream of attempting that distance in poorly fitting footwear so it’s inconceivable that many women on site are expected to do so week in, week out, operating in sectors that are already considered high-risk.
“ As the number of women entering electrics and other trade roles continues to rise, demand for properly designed, female-specific safety footwear will only increase.”
And it’s not just a comfort issue. Beyond fatigue and reduced concentration, research shows that ill-fitting boots increase strain on the body, heighten the risk of slips and trips and can contribute to long-term musculoskeletal injury. Studies also demonstrate that women forced to adapt to male-designed footwear may alter their gait or posture, further compounding the risk of injury.
Comercial imperative
For wholesalers, as key suppliers of PPE, this represents both a responsibility and an opportunity. As the number of women entering electrics and other trade roles continues to rise, demand for properly designed, female-specific safety footwear will only increase. In this way, addressing the PPE gender gap is no longer a niche consideration but a growing commercial imperative. The good news is that solutions are already emerging. This is seen in the recent arrival of the all-new Bobcat Safety Footwear women’s collection which has been purposefully designed to deliver the optimal balance of safety, comfort and style for women across all industries.
Engineered with insights from leading sports footwear technology and extensive research into the needs of working women, the dedicated women’s range –built across five distinct design handles –uses anatomically correct, gender-specific lasts to deliver true fit, real protection and all-day wearability.
At the heart of the range is comfort that works as hard as the wearer. Every model carries the signature Bobcat design language, with safety features tuned for realworld jobsite environments and the unique comfort advantage of Redbacks Leaf Spring
Technology at the core. Unlike foam or gel inserts, which simply soften the impact, LeafSpring Technology helps promote better posture, balance and alignment and reduce strain on the lower body. This technology is particularly effective in reducing the risk of plantar fasciitis, a condition all too common among tradespeople who spend hours on unforgiving surfaces.
No sacrifice
Meanwhile, features such as lightweight materials, composite safety toe caps, metalfree construction and puncture-resistant midsoles ensure maximum protection without sacrificing flexibility or comfort.
Style is accounted for too with the collection spanning four distinctively bold, sharp contemporary styles, shown across 5 SKUs, designed to provide a tailored solution for the full spectrum of real-world requirements. For ultimate versatility, the
“ Wholesalers can capture higher spend while offering a product that women in the trades genuinely want, need, appreciate and value.”
Akron, available in sleek All-Black or ontrend Sage, brings all-day comfort with a trendy hiker-inspired look, breathable lining and triple-density outsoles. The Rockford adds a sportier edge, pairing a lightweight build with advanced safety features ideal for logistics and light assembly. Rounding out the range, the athletic Clinch keeps feet protected through tough shifts, while the Virginia steps up for high-heat environments with waterproof leather, heat-resistant soles and supportive wedge insoles.
The range also delivers a strong margin opportunity. With RRPs from £85 to £125, wholesalers can capture higher spend while offering a product that women in the trades genuinely want, need, appreciate and value. This is supported by a robust trade marketing strategy that proactively drives customers to the counter –from social media and influencer activity to targeted PR –boosting awareness, footfall and sales.
Closing the safety footwear gender gap is no longer a question of if, but who will lead the way. Those who recognise this shift and stock products that genuinely meet the needs of all workers won’t just be doing the right thing –they’ll be positioning themselves a step ahead of the rest of the market.

TRANSFORMING SPACE INTO SALES
With trade counters under pressure to move fast, manage growing product ranges and stand out in an increasingly competitive landscape, professional merchandising has become a commercial tool in its own right. Well-designed POS displays help guide the customer journey, maximise floor space and encourage confident purchasing –all while reinforcing a store’s professional image.
First impressions count
The moment a customer walks into a wholesaler, they begin forming an opinion of the business. Clean, well-organised shelving sends a clear message: this is a professional environment, run by people who care about quality and efficiency. Branded displays add another layer, helping customers instantly recognise trusted suppliers while creating a consistent look across the store. For electricians, time is often limited. They want to find what they need quickly and feel confident in the products they are buying. Clear, attractive POS stands reduce visual clutter and make key product categories easier to navigate, creating a more relaxed and productive in-store experience.
display solutions are designed to maximise visibility without overwhelming the space, with options that include floor units, wallmounted displays and countertop stands. By using vertical space and modular layouts, wholesalers can present more products in a smaller footprint, keeping fast-moving lines within easy reach while freeing up valuable floor space elsewhere. This not only improves store layout, but also allows teams to adapt their displays as ranges evolve or seasonal demand changes.
Turning
browsing into buying
back to site with minimal delay. Wellplanned point of sale layouts guide them logically through the store, helping them locate products quickly and reducing bottlenecks around counters and aisles. Clear category signage, consistent branding and well-positioned displays all contribute to a smoother flow, improving the overall shopping experience while helping staff spend less time directing customers to the right products.
Making every square metre work harder
Retail space is valuable, particularly in busy trade counters where storage, stock and customer flow all compete for attention. Jefferson Tools’ shelving and
How products are displayed has a direct impact on how customers engage with them. Items that are easy to see, touch and compare are far more likely to be purchased than those hidden away on crowded shelves or in storage areas. Professional display stands help elevate everyday tools and accessories, making them feel more premium and considered. From gloves and PPE to hand tools and consumables, clear presentation draws attention and encourages customers to explore beyond their original shopping list. Strategically grouping related items, such as accessories alongside core tools, also creates natural opportunities for upselling and cross-selling, increasing average basket value without any hard sell.
In high-traffic wholesale environments, speed and simplicity are key. Customers want to get in, find what they need and get
Partnership beyond the stand
POS displays are an extension of your brand. A tidy, modern merchandising system reflects positively on the wholesaler, reinforcing trust and professionalism in the eyes of customers. In a competitive market, where many suppliers offer similar product ranges, the way those products are presented can become a key differentiator.
Branded shelving also supports supplier relationships, giving key ranges the visibility they deserve while creating a more cohesive and attractive retail environment.
Jefferson Tools supports stockists not only with physical display solutions, but also with guidance on layout, merchandising and promotional materials. This ensures each stand is positioned for maximum impact and continues to perform long after installation.
Paul Foulkes, Country Manager at Theben Automation, discusses the brand’s sustainability journey which started more than 100 years ago.
Sustainability in the electrical industry can sometimes feel like something that happens ‘somewhere else’ –in tender documents, environmental, social and governance (ESG) scorecards and corporate reports. Meanwhile, on site, the realities are far more basic: you want kit that works, turns up on time, lasts, and doesn’t create a mountain of waste to haul back to the van.
But the gap between those two worlds is closing. More projects now ask not only what a product does but how it’s made, what it’s made from, and what happens at end of life. That’s why it’s worth looking at sustainability through a lens that actually matches how the trade works: the product lifecycle.
At Theben, we’ve been thinking in those terms for a long time. Our story begins in 1921, when precision engineer Paul Schwenk started developing time
switches. A time switch is a simple idea, but it carries a bigger message: buildings don’t need to run at full tilt all the time. They can be controlled, timed and made more efficient, long before ‘ESG’ was a common phrase.
Sustainability as a mindset, not a manifesto
There’s a temptation in corporate sustainability to drown people in technical detail. Certifications, acronyms, scorecards. Those things have their place, but they don’t always land with the people who specify, stock and install electrical products.
What matters more is the simple principle we lean on: if we want to reduce impact, we can’t just tweak one thing. We have to look at the full story –where materials come from, how products are made and shipped, how they’re packaged and what happens at the end. That’s why we talk about the product lifecycle and everything that goes with it.
That ‘product lifecycle’ perspective can sound formal, but it’s really just common sense. If something is unreliable, hard to fit, over-packaged or
“ We’re open about the fact that sustainability only works if everyone owns it. ”
materials and in man-hours. If it lasts, performs consistently and arrives without unnecessary rubbish, it reduces waste without anyone needing to make a big speech about it.
The long-term view
Looking back over 100 years, you can see that environmental thinking showed up decades ago in practical ways. For example, our history notes that in 1964 we installed a modern detoxification system to remove harmful substances from wastewater, alongside planted green spaces around the site. That isn’t a modern ESG campaign. It’s a snapshot of Theben making tangible operational choices –the kind that don’t get applause, but do change impact over time.
We’ve also linked comfort and efficiency for decades. In the 1960s, our heating controls were described as “comfort plus economy,” including night setback to help reduce fuel consumption. Different era, same aim: better control, less waste, better outcomes for the people using the building.
And when we talk about design, something we’ve invested in since
the 1970s, it’s not only about aesthetics. Good design supports usability and longevity. It helps create products people don’t want to replace simply because they feel dated or awkward.
Making it easier to do the right thing
Sustainability becomes real when it removes friction for the people doing the work. That’s why we focus on the unglamorous areas where decisions stack up: how products move through the supply chain, how they’re produced, how they’re packaged and how they can be handled responsibly at end-of-life.
On the packaging side, for example, our direction is to reduce unnecessary packaging and cut down plastic where we can, replacing it with cardboard or paper where it makes sense. It’s not the flashiest part of sustainability, but it’s one of the most visible to installers because it affects van waste, site housekeeping and disposal.
We also talk about the end of the lifecycle because it’s increasingly part of how products are judged. It’s not just “can it be recycled?” but “what happens next?”
That’s why our sustainability work includes how products can be returned into material cycles and how we look at more circular approaches over time.
One for all –all for one
Policies help, but culture decides whether anything changes. That’s why we’re open about the fact that sustainability only works if everyone owns it. Our “One for all – all for one” message puts it simply: sustainability, climate change and ecological diversity concern all of us –from apprentices to the board –and every contribution counts. We try to bring that to life in practical ways, whether that’s encouraging ideas that reduce day-to-day waste, supporting biodiversity initiatives, or looking for small changes that add up across a year.
What this means for
the wholesale channel
The questions customers are asking are getting broader. It’s no longer only “does it meet the spec?” but also “does it meet the expectation?” That expectation now includes sustainability, not always in detail, but in credibility.
From a wholesale perspective, the value is in backing brands that can tell a consistent story: long-term thinking, practical improvements and a culture that treats sustainability as day-to-day responsibility, not a once-a-year announcement.
If we can keep sustainability grounded –less waste, better durability and more transparency across the lifecycle –then we’re not just responding to ESG trends. We’re continuing what we started back in 1921: helping buildings behave more intelligently, and helping the people who build them deliver better outcomes with less waste along the way.
