SPARKS ARE FLYING

Welcome to the April issue of PEW. News headlines are dominated at the moment by wars and conflicts, whether it’s RussiaUkraine, Gaza, or the wider Middle East region. Without getting bogged down in the politics – that’s for other channels – I’m sure we can all agree that war is a bad thing, more so for the people directly affected by it but also for the knock-on effects on the global economy.

“ Many believe the industry needs a stronger pipeline of apprentices to keep up with future demand. ”

Wars throughout history have been extensively covered by film and TV, and future catastrophic disasters are also depicted with varying causes and themes – I’m talking about the likes of The Day After Tomorrow, Greenland, Armageddon and The War of the Worlds. Many such films include storylines in which world leaders, scientists or other important figures are hidden away and protected in underground bunkers or secret bases (well apart from Bill Pullman’s President fighting the aliens in Independence Day). It got me thinking, who would be top of the UK’s list for protection should the end of the world become imminent. The Prime Minister and the reigning monarch are top of the list, whatever your views on them they are a given –some other politicians and royal figures might find themselves left behind! Moving on to trades, you have your key workers, in the medical field, food production and law enforcement among others. As much as I’d like to put myself forward as future editor of Nuclear Bunker Monthly, I feel print journalism might be a bit further down the pecking order. You want your bunker’s services to run smoothly and it to remain structurally sound, so construction professionals are of course a shoo-in.

In fact, tradespeople are sought-after in general anyway, without any national disaster. New research from welding specialist Tadweld has revealed the UK’s highest-earning trades for 2026, with bricklayers, carpenters and plumbers all in the top 20 – and electricians proudly top of the pile. It’s no secret that demand for electricians is booming. Between EV chargers, solar installs, battery storage and the general push toward electrification, there’s more work around than ever. The problem? Not enough people to do it. Contractors across the UK are still struggling to recruit qualified electricians, and many believe the industry needs a stronger pipeline of apprentices to keep up with future demand.

Scotland’s largest construction trade body, SELECT, has recently criticised the UK and Scottish governments for policies it says will undermine the electrical workforce of the future, with rising apprentice wages and decreasing financial support for taking on apprentices causing major concern. If the industry can’t bring enough new talent through the ranks, the skills gap could become the biggest challenge facing the electrical trade over the next decade.

One thing’s certain: the sparks are definitely flying in the sector right now.

NEW DATA REVEALS TRUE SCALE OF WEEE NON-COMPLIANCE NEWS & VIEWS

Environment Agency data released this month has uncovered the scale of WEEE non-compliance of product sold through online marketplaces.

For the last four and a half months of 2025, online marketplaces were legally required to report sales of electrical products imported into the UK via their platforms. And that data showed an annual market share of 13.8% for consumer lamps, and 11.8% for consumer luminaires.

Commenting on the news, Recolight CEO Nigel Harvey said: “At last we can see the true extent of WEEE non-compliance through online marketplaces. What is more, one of the

largest operators, eBay, does not yet appear in the list of compliant producers. So, once their data is also included, and it is grossed up into a full year equivalent, market shares could well be over 25% for consumer luminaires, and over 35% for consumer lamps.”

Share of costs

He added: “The really good news for the lighting industry is that, at long last, online sellers will be forced to pay their share of WEEE costs. Recolight has worked tirelessly to see this change introduced over many years, and we are very grateful to current and former Defra staff who made this happen.”

The WEEE regulations were amended last year, and from 12th August 2025 online marketplaces were required to start collecting data for all electrical goods brought into the UK via their platforms. Market shares are calculated using the weight of products placed on the market.

SCOLMORE GROUP LAUNCHES “IT’S COMING GNOME” WORLD CUP PROMOTION

Scolmore Group has unveiled a major new World Cup–themed promotion designed to boost engagement, reward installers, and drive increased footfall across electrical wholesale branches nationwide.

The campaign, titled ‘It’s Coming Gnome’, brings a fun, football focused twist to the tournament period, supported by eye catching POS materials and a wide range of free branded giveaways.

At the heart of the promotion is Scolmore Group’s new football themed gnome mascot, who will feature across all campaign assets and make special appearances in branches and at industry events throughout the tournament. His playful presence is designed to help wholesalers create in store impact and spark conversations with customers.

Participating wholesalers will receive a

selection of branded merchandise –including footballs and teddy bears –to hand out to customers at their discretion. These giveaways are intended to help branches increase counter traffic, encourage repeat visits, strengthen relationships with installers and create excitement during the World Cup. Branches will also receive a full suite of POS materials, posters, and digital assets to support in store activation.

Weekly prizes and two £5,000 holiday vouchers

Installers can enter the prize draws simply by purchasing any product from across the Scolmore Group brands: Click, Elucian, Ovia, ESP, and Unicrimp. The mechanic is simple: Installers upload their proof of purchase to a dedicated campaign website, with each transaction generating entries into both weekly prize

draws and the grand prize draw. Prizes include:

● Two headline £5,000 holiday vouchers

● Weekly giveaways – more than 300 prizes in total to be given out during the duration of the tournament, including Greggs and Amazon vouchers, Scolmore Group fridges, football T-shirts, company branded T-shirts, Elucian stools and bucket hats.

SELECT CALLS FOR URGENT REGULATION FOLLOWING BUILDING STANDARDS REPORT

SELECT has intensified its call for regulation of the electrical industry after a report in The Guardian highlighted serious concerns about UK building standards.

The article detailed how residents at One Hyde Park won a £35 million court case over defective pipework, exposing major construction failings. It argued that such issues reflect wider national problems, with families across the UK affected by damp, mould and substandard building work.

SELECT Managing Director, Alan Wilson said the findings echo warnings the association has raised for more than a decade about the risks posed by unqualified individuals carrying out safety-critical electrical work. He said:

“As an organisation that puts safety first, we welcome calls for stronger regulation in construction. Despite cross-party political support in Scotland, meaningful action has yet to be taken. Proper regulation would help eliminate the risks created by unqualified people undertaking dangerous work.”

SELECT has long campaigned for protection of title for electricians, in partnership with the Scottish Joint Industry Board (SJIB), the Scottish Electrical Charitable Training Trust (SECTT) and Unite the Union. The campaign seeks to make it a statutory offence for individuals without appropriate qualifications to describe themselves as electricians.

Best practice

Mr Wilson added that SELECT will continue promoting best practice and pressing for reform to ensure high standards, improved oversight and greater consumer protection across the industry.

How the EIC’s EAP

Supported Leonie Through Crisis.

THE RIGHT HELP AT THE RIGHT TIME

Leonie’s turn to the Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) came amid one of the hardest periods of her life. Her sister’s mental health crisis – culminating in hospitalisation and a legal case – shocked the entire family and introduced a level of stress that felt unbearable. At the same time, Leonie had started a demanding new job that rapidly triggered severe anxiety and catastrophic thinking. Coupled with medication side effects that impaired her ability to cope, these mounting pressures seriously threatened her emotional and professional wellbeing.

Employee Assistance Programme

Turning to the EIC’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), Leonie found a confidential, empathetic resource that was both timely and comprehensive. The programme’s tailored support plan included six professional counselling sessions designed to help her process trauma, manage stress, and overcome overwhelming, negative thoughts. Her counsellor taught her grounding techniques and practical strategies she could apply both at home and at work, empowering her to gradually rebuild her mental resilience and confidence.

But the EAP offered more than counselling alone. It also provided access to essential financial and emotional guidance, helping Leonie navigate the practical challenges that often accompany mental health struggles. In addition, the programme connected her to family support services, recognising the interconnectedness of personal relationships and emotional wellbeing. Throughout her recovery, a skilled caseworker maintained regular contact, continuously assessing her progress and adjusting the support plan to suit her evolving needs. This flexibility meant Leonie didn’t have to navigate her recovery in isolation – she always had someone advocating for her needs and championing her wellbeing.

Additional services

The strength of the EAP lies in its layered and holistic approach. It acknowledges that mental health challenges are seldom isolated; rather, they intersect deeply with family dynamics, medical treatment, work pressures, and a person’s vocational identity. The programme therefore helps individuals like Leonie by providing not just psychological support, but also referral pathways to additional services, ongoing check-ins, and practical problem-solving

strategies to address everyday difficulties. Because of this coordinated and compassionate care, Leonie didn’t just survive a difficult period – she rebuilt her emotional and professional life. She regained control over her job performance, reduced her anxiety, and reconnected with important personal relationships that had been strained. Her GP later noted a marked improvement in her condition, attributing much of her progress to the consistent therapeutic support provided through the EAP.

No one should face mental health challenges alone or feel compelled to push through emotional distress in silence. That’s why the EIC is deeply committed to offering the EAP – and why it’s essential for every employer and worker in our sector to know that this vital support is available.

If you or someone you know works in the electrical or energy industries and needs confidential emotional or practical support, the EAP is ready to help. Visit electricalcharity.org/employeeassistance-programme/, go to WWW.RDR.LINK/WBM002 or call the confidential helpline to find out more.

FACE TO FACE ENKIN

COMPETITION

WINAPROFESSIONAL-READY TOOL BUNDLE WITH JEFFERSON TOOLS

Every electrician knows the reality of the job: no two days look the same. One morning might start with a planned installation, while the afternoon brings an urgent call-out to diagnose a fault in a dark plant room or a cramped loft space. Working environments change constantly, and the ability to adapt quickly often comes down to having dependable tools close at hand. Jefferson Tools has partnered with PEW to give readers the chance to win a practical, job-ready bundle designed to support electricians wherever the working day leads.

The prize comes packed in a Jefferson Tools branded rucksack, designed to stay useful long after the competition ends. Comfortable to carry and easy to organise, it’s ideal for transporting the bundle and just as handy for taking your own tools and everyday essentials from job to job.

Electricians carry significant responsibility every time they reach for their tools, particularly when working around live circuits. Having the right insulated equipment is a necessity. The bundle includes a VDE screwdriver set designed specifically for electrical professionals. Whether installing new systems, carrying out maintenance or fault-finding under pressure, insulated screwdrivers provide reassurance when it matters most.

From tightening terminals and securing connections to testing circuits before starting work, these are the kinds of tools electricians rely on daily. The set also includes a single-pole voltage tester

– a small but vital addition that helps confirm whether circuits are live before work begins. It’s the kind of everyday safety companion that quickly becomes indispensable.

Visibility is another constant challenge on site. Electrical work often takes place in ceiling voids, cupboards, service corridors, outdoor installations or properties where lighting is limited or unavailable. Hands-free illumination can make a real difference, allowing electricians to focus fully on the job without juggling torches or relying on poor ambient lighting.

The Jefferson Tools LED headlamp is built for demanding environments like these. Delivering a powerful 580-lumen output, it provides reliable lighting exactly where it’s needed. Multiple lighting modes give flexibility for different tasks, from close-up precision work to lighting up larger areas. The adjustable lens allows users to switch between a focused spot beam and a wide flood beam in seconds, making it easy to adapt to changing conditions throughout the day. Durability is equally important. Designed to cope with dust, splashes and the inevitable knocks of life on site, the headlamp is both water-resistant and impact-resistant. Its rechargeable battery adds everyday convenience, helping to reduce downtime and ensuring it’s always ready for the next job.

The winner of the January/February competition, sponsored by Knightsbridge, was

FIXED RATE

Lynne Jhangeer of LINIAN examines some of the products and solutions redefining cable fixing.

In today’s electrical and construction sectors, time is money –but safety is everything. Installers face increasing pressure to deliver high-quality work on tighter schedules, all while meeting ever-evolving compliance standards.

LINIAN is dedicated to designing products that simplify installation, reduce fixing time, and improve safety on site –without compromising on performance.

A smarter way to fix cables

Traditional cable fixing methods often involve multiple components: clips, plugs, screws, anchors –and multiple steps. Drill. Insert plug. Position clip. Drive screw. Repeat. It’s a process that consumes time and introduces inconsistency, particularly when working at height or in confined spaces.

LINIAN offer single-component fixing solutions that combines clip and anchor into one unit. Drill a hole, push it in, and you’re done. No wall plugs. No screws. No separate components. The result? A dramatically faster installation process that can reduce fixing time by up to 50% compared to traditional methods. For contractors managing largescale projects –whether in residential developments, commercial buildings, or industrial environments –those time savings quickly translate into significant cost efficiencies.

Real-world conditions

LINIAN solutions are designed with installers, for installers. Electricians told us they needed:

● Faster fixing methods

● Reduced repetitive strain

● Greater consistency

● Fire-rated compliance

The single-piece design means fewer materials to manage on site. Installers can work one-handed –a critical advantage when operating from ladders or elevated platforms. Less handling means less fatigue and improved productivity across a full working day.

In environments where cable management must meet fire safety standards, compliance is non-negotiable. The LINIAN range is made from high quality, corrosion resistant, fire rated steel which means the products meet UK wiring regulations, helping contractors maintain compliance without adding complexity.

can mean hours saved per plot. Multiply that across dozens –or hundreds –of properties, and the impact becomes substantial. Speed, however, is only part of the equation.

Improving safety on site

While speed and simplicity are vital on modern projects, fire safety remains one of the most critical considerations in cable management.

“ While speed and simplicity are vital on modern projects, fire safety remains one of the most critical considerations in cable management.”

Supporting modern construction demands

The construction landscape is changing. Modular builds, high-volume housing, and large-scale commercial installations all demand speed without sacrificing quality. Cable fixing solutions are used across:

● Residential housing developments

● Student accommodation projects

● Hospitals and healthcare facilities

● Commercial offices

● Industrial installations

● Fewer components to carry

In high-volume residential projects especially, reducing seconds per fixing

In the event of a fire, inadequately supported cables can fail prematurely. Plastic fixings may soften or collapse under high temperatures, allowing cables to fall and potentially obstruct escape routes or hinder firefighting operations. Following well-documented incidents in the UK, regulations were strengthened to ensure that wiring systems are supported in a way that prevents premature collapse during a fire.

At LINIAN, fire performance is not an afterthought –it is engineered into products from the outset.

The range is designed to provide secure retention under elevated temperatures. Manufactured to withstand the demands of fire conditions, these fixings help maintain cable containment and support compliance with UK wiring regulations, including the requirements introduced following changes to BS 7671. By using fire-rated cable clips as standard, contractors can install with confidence, knowing that the fixing method contributes to the overall integrity of the installation in extreme circumstances.

Importantly, this level of protection does not come at the expense of speed. The same single-component, push-fit design that accelerates installation also ensures consistent, secure anchoring –reducing the risk of improper fixing that could compromise performance.

In today’s regulatory environment, demonstrating due diligence in fire safety is essential. Choosing compliant, fire-rated cable fixing solutions is a simple but significant step toward protecting both property and lives. Cable management should not only simplify installation –it should stand up to the toughest conditions when it matters most.

Sustainability through efficiency LINIAN uses fully recyclable packaging including water-based ink, however, sustainability isn’t just about materials –it’s also about process efficiency. Reducing the number of components per fixing reduces material usage. Faster installation reduces energy consumption on site. Fewer repeat visits due to inconsistent fixings means fewer vehicle movements.

By designing products that streamline workflow, we indirectly contribute to more sustainable construction practices. Small improvements, multiplied across thousands of installations, create meaningful environmental impact.

Listening, adapting, improving One of LINIAN’s greatest strengths is its close relationship with installers and wholesalers. Feedback drives development process –if a product can be made quicker, stronger, or more versatile, LINIAN wants to know. An

expanding product range reflects that ongoing dialogue with the industry. As methods advance and regulatory requirements tighten, efficiency and compliance will only grow in importance.

By combining smart design, installer-focused innovation, and rigorous performance standards, LINIAN is helping professionals complete jobs faster, safer, and with greater consistency. In an industry where margins are tight and deadlines tighter, the right cable accessory doesn’t just hold a cable in place –it holds a project together.

BALANCING ACT

Emergency lighting is often associated with corridors, stairwells and plant rooms, but external environments present just as many safety-critical challenges. For wholesalers supplying electrical contractors and beyond, understanding how outdoor luminaires can support both compliance and environmental responsibility is increasingly important.

The external envelope of a building is no longer just a transitional space. Car parks, walkways, entrance routes and perimeter areas must remain safely illuminated during mains failure. At the same time, environmental legislation, biodiversity policies and planning conditions are placing greater scrutiny on how – and what – we illuminate after dark. This presents a clear opportunity for wholesalers to offer solutions that combine robust emergency performance with responsible exterior lighting design.

Ian Murphy, R&D Manager at Ventilux, looks at the opportunities that outdoor emergency lighting can present to wholesalers.

Local authorities and planners are placing growing emphasis on reducing light pollution and protecting nocturnal wildlife. For emergency lighting in outdoor areas, this creates a balancing act. Installations must remain compliant, reliable and

effective in an emergency while avoiding unnecessary uplight, glare and ecological disturbance. Forward-thinking manufacturers are now responding to this challenge, and wholesalers are ideally placed to support contractors by offering products that address both performance and sustainability.

Demanding environments

Ventilux’s Alpha has been developed as a robust outdoor luminaire engineered for long-term performance in demanding

environments. Constructed from highquality die-cast aluminium and rated IP65 and IK10, it is designed to withstand weather exposure, impact and potential vandalism – essential considerations for emergency escape routes, perimeters and public realm applications. However, durability alone is no longer enough. A defining evolution within the Alpha is the introduction of new 2700K LED plates. This very warm colour temperature significantly reduces blue and ultraviolet wavelengths compared with traditional cool white sources. In practical terms, this supports bat-friendly lighting strategies and reduces insect attraction, helping projects meet environmental conditions without compromising safety. For wholesalers, this represents an important talking point, as contractors are increasingly asked to justify lighting choices as part of planning submissions or sustainability assessments. Being able to offer a luminaire that supports biodiversity objectives adds tangible value beyond price and availability.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING

Emergency lighting outdoors must be dependable but controlled, and one of the major contributors to environmental light pollution is uplight and sky glow. Poorly directed luminaires spill light into the night sky, reducing visibility of the stars, disturbing wildlife and impacting nearby residents. Alpha’s downward light projection ensures illumination is delivered only where required, supporting safer navigation during an emergency while reducing unnecessary environmental impact. This controlled distribution also improves visual comfort, creating more pleasant nighttime environments, which is increasingly valued in residential and mixed-use developments.

When discussing sustainability with contractors and specifiers, energy efficiency is often the first metric considered. While LED technology plays a crucial role in reducing operational energy consumption, product lifespan is equally important. Alpha’s die-cast aluminium

housing provides excellent corrosion resistance and structural integrity. Combined with IP65 ingress protection and IK10 impact resistance, this robust construction significantly reduces the likelihood of premature failure. Fewer replacements mean lower embodied carbon over time, fewer site visits and reduced material waste. For contractors and management companies responsible for maintaining external emergency lighting systems, this translates into lower lifecycle costs and improved reliability. For wholesalers, offering products designed for longevity strengthens relationships with professional installers who prioritise dependable performance over short-term cost savings.

Integration

Emergency lighting can no longer be treated as a standalone compliance item. It must integrate with wider architectural, environmental and sustainability

objectives. By stocking and promoting solutions that reflect this shift, wholesalers position themselves as knowledgeable partners rather than transactional suppliers.

Modern exterior emergency lighting demonstrates that it is possible to combine industrial-grade durability with environmentally responsible illumination, precise light control and extended service life. By addressing both compliance and ecological impact, these approaches bridge the gap between functional performance and sustainability.

For today’s electrical wholesalers, understanding and supplying lighting that meets these evolving expectations is no longer optional; it represents the future direction of responsible outdoor emergency illumination.

Ronald Moeskops, Trade Marketing Western Europe at LEDVANCE, discusses emergency lighting built for installation readiness.

READY CHECK

Emergency lighting is a fundamental component of building safety, helping to ensure that occupants can safely exit a space in the event of a power failure or emergency. In commercial, industrial and public environments, the correct specification and installation of emergency luminaires is essential not only for safety but also for compliance with current regulations and standards.

When planning an emergency lighting system, specifiers and installers must consider a range of practical factors. Light output and coverage, emergency duration, environmental protection and long-term reliability all influence the effectiveness of the system. Installation efficiency is also a key consideration, particularly on projects with tight deadlines, complex access or high-traffic areas. Increasingly, flexibility and futureproofing are also valued, allowing systems to adapt as building use or requirements evolve. Modern emergency luminaires are therefore expected to combine robust performance with practical, user-friendly installation features.

Streamline installation

LEDVANCE has expanded its emergency lighting portfolio to address these needs, introducing solutions designed to deliver both dependable performance and installation readiness. The Emergency Twin Spot luminaire is tailored for applications where high-visibility, directional lighting is essential. Suitable for indoor and outdoor environments, its IP65-rated housing provides protection against dust and moisture, making it ideal for warehouses,

car parks, plant rooms and external escape routes. The two adjustable spotlights enable installers to direct light precisely along defined escape paths, optimising coverage while minimising unnecessary illumination. Equipped with a LiFePO4 battery, the luminaire ensures a minimum of three hours of emergency operation and is supplied with mounting accessories to streamline on-site installation.

Complementing the Twin Spot is the Wallpack Combo IP65 luminaire, which introduces LEDVANCE’s Plug & Upgrade concept to outdoor emergency lighting. This modular approach allows the Wallpack to be installed initially as a standard luminaire, with emergency functionality added later via an emergency kit if required. Such flexibility is particularly valuable for projects where emergency lighting requirements may change during the course of construction, or where budgets and programmes call for a phased installation. Options are also available with or without an integrated photocell, providing additional adaptability for exterior applications.

Smoother delivery

Both solutions highlight the growing importance of installation readiness in emergency lighting design. By combining robust construction, compliance with current standards and flexible installation options, these luminaires allow contractors to deliver reliable, safe and future-ready solutions without unnecessary complexity. They also reduce the potential for errors or delays on site, supporting smoother project delivery and long-term system performance.

In addition to safety and compliance, durability and low-maintenance operation are increasingly important considerations. The IP65-rated housings, high-quality materials and extended battery life of these luminaires help ensure reliable

Digital transformation has been a familiar theme in wholesale for years. Most electrical wholesalers now rely heavily on business software to manage stock, orders, pricing and accounts. Yet for many teams, daily operations can still feel highly manual, reactive and dependent on experience rather than systems.

That’s not a criticism of existing technology. It’s a reflection of how wholesale businesses have evolved. Systems have often been introduced over time to solve specific problems, including accounting tools, stock control, reporting packages, spreadsheets and bolt-on utilities. Each addition made sense at the time, but collectively they can create complexity.

Today, the conversation is starting to shift. Instead of asking “What new tools do we need?”, many wholesalers are asking a more useful question:

“How can our systems better support the way we actually work?”

Why more software doesn’t always mean better operations

Wholesale businesses have never stood still. Product ranges expand, customer expectations increase, supply chains fluctuate and margins remain under constant pressure. Technology inevitably follows this change.

The challenge is that adding more systems does not always simplify life. Staff may find themselves moving between

DELVE INTO DIGITAL

From stock visibility to decision-making speed, modern software is quietly reshaping how electrical wholesalers operate. But where do digital tools genuinely add value, and how should businesses cut through the noise around automation and AI? Richard Face, Head of Marketing at Klipboard, explains.

screens, re-typing information or exporting data just to answer straightforward questions. Information exists but accessing it quickly can be harder than it should be.

Increasingly, wholesalers are recognising that operational efficiency is less about the number of features and more about removing unnecessary steps from day-to-day processes. Software needs to reflect real workflows, such as purchasing, stock handling, sales, fulfilment and financial control, rather than operating as isolated functional silos.

When systems align with everyday activities, the benefits are clear: fewer errors, faster responses and less time lost to everyday admin.

Visibility: The operational advantage wholesalers can’t ignore

For electrical wholesalers, visibility isn’t just a buzzword. It directly affects service levels, customer confidence and profitability. Teams constantly need answers to practical questions:

● What is genuinely available to sell?

● Which lines are moving fastest or slowest?

● Where are margins tightening?

● Which customers or segments are driving growth?

Software has long provided reporting capability but reports mostly tell you what has already happened. In fast-moving wholesale environments, businesses increasingly need systems that help show what is happening now.

Modern wholesale platforms aim to bring stock, sales, purchasing and financial information into a single operational picture. The aim is not simply about data but enabling confidence in decisions. When staff can see a clearer view of reality, they can act faster and with greater assurance.

Automation: Quiet improvements, meaningful gains

Automation is often assumed to involve major system changes, disruption and significant cost. In practice, many of the most valuable gains come from incremental improvements.

Wholesalers are using digital tools to streamline routine activities such as:

● Reducing manual data entry.

● Simplifying approvals and authorisations.

● Automating document flows.

● Removing repetitive processing steps.

Each adjustment may appear small, yet collectively they reshape workload

distribution. Staff spend less time on system admin and more time helping customers and running the business. For businesses facing labour constraints and rising service expectations, these small improvements add up quickly.

AI in wholesale: Practical support, not science fiction

Artificial intelligence is now one of the most widely discussed topics in business software. For many wholesalers, the noise surrounding AI can feel disconnected from operational reality.

In wholesale, AI is far less about replacing people and far more about helping teams work faster and make better decisions.

Used sensibly, AI can help teams:

● Access information more quickly.

● Reduce time spent searching systems.

● Identify patterns or anomalies.

● Support decision-making within

defined processes.

Crucially, AI does not remove the need for human judgement. Wholesale remains shaped by supplier relationships, customer behaviour, market dynamics and commercial know-how. Areas where experience is indispensable. The most effective AI capabilities tend to work quietly within existing business systems, enhancing usability and visibility rather than attempting wholesale reinvention.

Systems that keep wholesale moving

For wholesalers, business systems are not abstract technology. They play a central role in how smoothly day-to-day operations run, from stock handling and sales through to purchasing and accounts.

When systems are well connected and reflect real working practices, teams spend less time searching for information or working around limitations. Everyday

tasks become quicker, decisions become easier, and the software starts to feel like a help rather than a hurdle.

Many wholesale platforms bring stock, sales, purchasing and financial processes together within a single system. Whatever terminology is used, the practical benefit is simple: when information is consistent and accessible, operations tend to run more efficiently.

A realistic path forward for electrical wholesalers

For most wholesalers, meaningful digital improvement is evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

Software should make everyday work easier. If it doesn’t, its value quickly comes into question.

If you prefer the flexibility of a zip, the Marquette Full-Zip Sweatshirt has got you covered. Made from a midweight cotton blend fleece, it’s warm without being heavy.

For a bolder look, the Marquette Shamrock Sweatshirt has a kangaroo pocket and Carhartt logo with shamrocks across the chest. It comes in a loose fit and midweight feel so it’s well suited to early spring days. For women in the trades, Carhartt’s Clarksburg Logo Sweatshirt is a heavier option that still works for layering. Made from Clarksburg fleece and brushed on the inside for added softness, it is warm enough to rival a lightweight jacket.

SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC MINIATURE RESIDUAL CURRENT CIRCUIT BREAKERS

Schneider Electric has launched Acti9 iCVm40 and Resi9 RCBO, two residual current circuit breakers with overcurrent protection (RCBOs) that deliver the same high level of protection as previous models, in half the footprint. The new devices combine the functions of a residual current device (RCD) and a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) into a single, miniaturised solution, reducing device width from 36mm to just 18mm and helping free up valuable space inside electrical panels.

Modern buildings and homes are becoming more electrified, and with this comes the need for additional circuit protection for EV charging, heat pumps and smart communication systems. As a result, panel builders and electricians need to fit more protected circuits into less space, as technical rooms and residential enclosures get smaller and safety requirements continue to evolve.

Traditional RCBO installations take up valuable panel space, often requiring the use of larger panels or complete panel replacement during upgrades. This is a significant challenge in retrofit projects, increasing cost and complexity. Schneider’s new Acti9 and Resi9 RCBOs save panel space thanks to their compact 18mm wide design. This enables panel builders to add more protected circuits or create room for additional features, helping them modernise existing installations without expanding panel size or making costly structural changes.

In addition, in RCD + MCB architectures, a single earth leakage fault tripping disconnects all circuits, resulting in unnecessary disruptions. This is particularly damaging in environments with multiple zones where interruptions can be costly and can disrupt business services.

The RCBOs deliver zone specific protection, isolating only the impacted circuit and helping to minimize operational downtime. With the new miniaturised format, electricians can replace traditional RCD + MCB setups with the new device without increasing panel size or requiring additional space.

Drug and alcohol misuse is becoming more prevalent in the workplace. Regular testing, within a drug and alcohol policy, can play a vital role in ensuring the safety of employees, with simple, non-invasive testing devices that can provide fast and discreet results. Mark Burrup, drug and alcohol testing expert at Draeger Safety UK, talks about the risks associated with substance misuse in the workplace and how to mitigate these risks to keep people safe.

Drug and alcohol abuse poses a serious safety issue for all businesses, but particularly so for those involved in safety critical roles such as electricians. In such scenarios, the misuse of drugs or alcohol – and even the effects of some prescription medications – has the potential to risk not only individual safety, but that of colleagues and members of the public, too.

In addition to the human cost, substance misuse across the UK results in billions of pounds in lost productivity and workdays, increased absenteeism and a substantially heightened risk of

accidents. Impairment through drug and alcohol misuse can significantly affect judgement, slow reaction times and reduce hazard perception – dangerous for everyday tasks, but even more so for those handling tools and electrical equipment, where one mistake could cause serious injuries to themselves and others, as well as potential liability for their employer.

Side effects

Furthermore, it's not just the use of illegal drugs which can pose safety risks; studies have shown that a combination of physical injuries and rising mental health

issues in the industry has resulted in a significant increase in workers using prescribed drugs. While these treatments are beneficial, some – for example benzodiazepines, often prescribed for anxiety, have side effects which can cause dizziness, fatigue, blurred vision and reduced concentration, potentially compromising safety.

Dräger has recently partnered with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) to publish a new Best Practice Guide to provide the information and tools needed for companies to act decisively to manage the problem of drug and alcohol misuse at work. Clear policies, supportive interventions, employee education and proportionate testing programmes all play a vital role. By taking a proactive, evidence based approach, employers can better protect their workforce, fulfil their legal obligations and broader duty of care, and help prevent avoidable harm.

Research undertaken as part of The Dräger Safety and Health at Work (DSHAW) Report 2022 showed that 83% of workers would comply with a corporate drug and alcohol testing programme as they believe it is in everyone’s interest to be safe at work. This suggests that the proactive approach now being taken by many organisations is increasingly in line with workforce concerns and expectations.

A well thought out drug and alcohol policy, which includes awareness of when prescription medication is being taken, is especially important where safety-critical tasks (as defined by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)) or workplace driving are involved. A good policy will explain the risks and outline the strategy and controls adopted by the organisation to prevent – and where necessary manage – substance misuse among staff, while also being fair, transparent and consistent.

“ A well thought out drug and alcohol policy is especially important where safety-critical tasks or workplace driving are involved.”

Many companies are now carrying out or introducing in-house testing for alcohol and drugs, using simple non-invasive devices that are quick, discreet and easy to use. Breathalysers capable of analysing a person’s breath alcohol content are commonly used as part of screening programmes, and innovations such as the greater use of digital and connected technology, as well as data management software, make both recording and the management of test results and data much simpler.

In addition, as the requirement for more portable and discreet methods of drug testing has risen, there has been an increase in demand for saliva based drug screening kits. These can be used to screen for a range of drugs – including opiates, amphetamines, methamphetamine, cocaine, benzodiazepines and THC (cannabis) – and give a reliable indication of recent drug use. Saliva based test kits also provide rapid results, allowing a manager to take immediate action to protect workplace safety – for example, by suspending the employee from work pending further investigation and testing.
