Well here we are. I was getting quite used to the warm weather and long sunny evenings and here I am writing the editorial for September. Is it just me or is time speeding up? I was at a music festival in July watching Fatboy Slim and a band I still thought of as being quite new before realising that Kaiser Chiefs released their first album, Employment, 20 years ago! While we’re reflecting on the summer it would be remiss of me not to mention the incredible Lionesses – who went one better than the men did in last year’s football European Championships and defended their title against Spain.
That’s enough looking back, however, it’s time to look forward in terms of business and trade with the recent publication of the Government’s Modern Industrial Strategy. Described by the government as a ‘new approach for a new era’, it provides a robust and strategic 10-year plan to make the UK the best country to invest in anywhere in the world. Success of course doesn’t happen overnight, but it also doesn’t happen if you sit around waiting for it. If my ‘Kaiser Chiefs’ timeline is anything to go by, the next decade will pass in the blink of an eye, so with this Strategy in place let’s hope it can deliver on its promises. It has been widely welcomed in industry quarters, including the electrotechnical sector, because of the potential support it will bring to SMEs. You can see the ECA’s response in News & Views on page 6
“ The Modern Industrial Strategy has been widely welcomed in industry quarters, including the electrotechnical sector, because of the potential support it will bring to SMEs.”
Also in this issue we’ve got a Face-to-Face interview with Simon Cranton of Doepke UK, as well as special features on Lighting, Home Automation and Tools. I’ve taken delivery of several new tools and gadgets recently as I’ve embarked on various DIY projects at home in the last few months. But as any tradesperson will tell you, as you accumulate more tools they become more difficult to transport from job to job. On page 27 KNIPEX highlights the importance of a practical and durable tool bag. Rounding off the issue in Soapbox on page 48, Stuart Burns from The Lighting Industry Association explains what the 10th Edition of IEC 60598-1 means for the lighting industry.
Enjoy the issue!

ECA has welcomed the publication of the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy. The long-awaited strategic plan for the next decade, which promises to bring down industrial electricity costs, ensure projects receive timely connections to the Grid, and support small and medium businesses (SMEs) by tackling late payments from large firms to SMEs.
Rob Driscoll, ECA’s Director of Legal and Business, commented: “Tackling the culture and practice of late payments within the industry has been a cornerstone of ECA’s advocacy for a number of years. We welcome the
Government’s commitment to unlock growth and go further, faster, solving this pernicious issue and look forward to working in partnership with them to end poor payment practices.”
ECA’s Blueprint for Electrification - a roadmap for the UK - calls for improving grid connections and removing barriers to planning to speed up electrification.
“The Industrial Strategy - Clean Energy Industry Sector Plan - outlines a commitment to growing Britain’s electricity network supply chains, so clean power projects can connect to the Grid”, said Jane Dawson, ECA’s Head of External
Affairs. “We see this a positive step to speeding up the energy transition, as outlined in the Blueprint for Electrification. ECA Member firms will also welcome the promise to remove planning barriers, an often-cited obstacle to new projects.”
Andrew Eldred, ECA’s Deputy CEO, added: “An electrical career provides high quality jobs and good career progression opportunities. To match the demand of accelerating electrification outlined in the Industrial Strategy, the industry, just in England, needs 12,500 new entrants each year (5,000 more than current levels of apprentice recruitment).”
Scolmore Group has announced the donation of a range of electrical accessory products to Telford College to support students pursuing careers in electrical and engineering fields. The donation includes an assortment of high-quality products from across the Scolmore Group of companies including Click switches and sockets, Elucian distribution boards and Unicrimp cable accessories. These products will be integrated into the college's practical training programmes, giving students hands-on experience with industry-standard materials.
“We are passionate about investing in the future of the electrical industry,” said Neil McManus, Technical Engagement Engineer, Scolmore Group. “By providing these essential products to Telford College, we hope to inspire and equip the next generation of skilled professionals who will drive innovation and excellence in our sector. As the industry constantly develops, with different emerging technologies available to generate
electricity, there will always be a constant demand for electricians in every sector.”
Luke Foster, environmental technology lecturer at Telford College, said: “We are incredibly thankful for this support from Scolmore Group. Access to up-to-date and industry-standard equipment is vital for our students, and this generous donation will make a real difference in their training and readiness for the workforce.”
JTL has launched a bold new campaign urging employers to take on an apprentice and invest in their future workforce.
The campaign, Powering Apprenticeships. Fuelling Business, comes at a time of mounting pressure on the UK’s skilled trades. With demand growing in core areas such as electrical installation, low-carbon technologies and heating and plumbing services, JTL is appealing directly to employers to act now and secure the next generation of qualified professionals in these safety-critical industries.
JTL currently supports over 8,000 apprentices in partnership with more than 3,800 employers across England and Wales; mostly small and micro businesses.
Recent reforms to funding have increased the accessibility of apprenticeships, particularly for small businesses. Employers with fewer than 50 staff can now access fully funded apprenticeships for individuals aged 16 to 21, helping to reduce upfront costs associated with recruitment and training. JTL also provides each apprentice with a workplace toolkit and access to digital learning resources as part of its standard offer, aiming to support both the apprentice’s development and the employer’s onboarding process.
Hayley Tabberer,
Employer Campaign
Manager, said: “Our apprentices are job-ready and supported from the very start. This campaign reflects the energy and confidence we see in our learners every day - and in the employers who choose to invest in them.”
Chris Claydon, Chief Executive of JTL, added: “The UK is at a tipping point. The demand for skilled electricians and plumbing professionals is rising rapidly, but the workforce is shrinking. We are seeing some employers hesitate, but now is the moment to lean in. Apprenticeships are not a cost - they are an investment in futureproofing your business.
The electrical industry faces a critical skills shortage, with thousands of positions remaining unfilled across the UK. But for every challenge, there are individuals ready to step up and power the future. Carhartt's NexGen Ambassador campaign wanted to identify two exceptional young electricians who embody the determination, skill and work ethic that defines the trades and they found them in Remi Newman and Charlie Weston.
The NexGen Ambassador programme was designed by Carhartt to highlight the opportunities available in electrical trades while supporting those who demonstrate exceptional commitment to their craft. Both winners, who receive exclusive workwear packages and financial support
for their training providers, serve as examples of the diverse pathways into skilled trades and the rewarding careers that await those willing to invest in developing their expertise.
“The electrical industry needs passionate, skilled people who understand that this work isn’t just a job – it’s a calling,” said Lisa Meijer, Senior PR & Communication Specialist for Carhartt EMEA/PAC. “Remi and Charlie demonstrate exactly the kind of commitment and enthusiasm that will drive our industry forward. They're not just learning a trade; they're preparing to

The EDATA data pool has achieved a significant milestone and now offers all wholesaler members of the Electrical Distributors’ Association (EDA) free access to enriched product information and images on over 300,000 products. Since the EDA launched the data pool for the electrotechnical sector in 2020 it has grown rapidly as manufacturers see the commercial advantage in giving their wholesaler customers access to high-quality product information and imagery in a central time-saving hub.
Margaret Fitzsimons, CEO at the EDA, said: “The data pool grows daily, and having cleared the 300,000 product milestone we have 500,000 SKUs firmly in our sights. This growth has been achieved
through working closely with manufacturer members, almost like data consultancy, guiding, sharing expertise and adapting strategies depending on where the manufacturer is on their data creation journey. This collaborative working has paid off and the data pool is fast becoming the go-to resource for high quality technically rich product information. This is exactly what wholesalers need to support sales to their contractor customers over the trade counter, through quotes, tenders and submittals, and e-commerce.”
Richard Appleton, Head of Digitalisation at the EDA, added: “Whilst EDATA can be accessed by wholesalers as a stand-alone data hub, its rich data and images are also feeding other
software platforms on which UK wholesalers depend, such as ERP systems, e-commerce, and e-catalogues.
“Wholesalers need access to a critical mass of product information and images in one place and, whilst 300,000 products inside is a big number, the quality of that information is paramount. We talk a lot about Gold Quality Product Data in EDATA, and that’s because patchy information on a product isn’t much use to a wholesaler: they need deep, rich information that’s technically complete, data that’s Gold standard. It is why all manufacturer subscribers to the data pool benefit from a comprehensive package of support, advice, and training so they know exactly what their data goal is and how to achieve it.”
FireAngel has reinforced its commitment to wholesaler partners by introducing a dedicated Wholesaler Support Team.
Focused on building strong relationships and delivering tailored, trade customer-first support, the team works closely with branches across the UK to identify opportunities, share expertise, and drive sustainable growth together.
The team has been thoughtfully developed as part of FireAngel’s continued investment in providing dedicated, on-the-ground support to its valued wholesaler partners. Regional Account Managers, Beth Christmas, Lewy Fardon and Dan Grimsdell, bring extensive industry knowledge and a hands-on approach, working closely with customers to navigate evolving
legislation, optimise stock availability and strengthen their fire safety offering in line with market demand.
FireAngel’s Regional Account Managers provide nationwide support to trade wholesale partners across the UK. The team has been appointed to provide
proactive, on-the-ground support, whether wholesalers are looking to expand their product range, improve stock turnover or offer more informed advice to their own customers.
This initiative forms a key part of FireAngel’s wider customer support strategy, focused on delivering proactive, personalised support at every level.
Johan Keen, National Trade Sales Manager at FireAngel, said: “The formation of our dedicated Wholesaler Support Team reflects our focus on delivering a more hands-on, consultative approach for our valued wholesale partners. We want to ensure all our partners are not only stocking best-selling, regulation-compliant products, but also fully supported in driving growth and profitability to end users.”

Q1: A customer wants to use a pushbutton rather than a switch to turn a light on and then off again. She has bought a button from a retailer that is marked as a momentary and is complaining that it only works when held in and therefore must be faulty. What advice do you give?
Q2: Give one similarity and one difference between a relay and a contactor.
Q3: What are the important things to know when supplying a UPS providing backup power to a control system?
Q4: What is required to write and download PLC programme?
Q5: What are the two different types of temperature sensing device used in industrial control?
Q6: Why are electrical terminals on equipment designed to offer IP2x protection?
Q6: IP 2x provides protection for fingers. This significantly reduces the risk of someone working near such equipment with live terminals making inadvertent contact with live parts.
Q5: Thermocouples and RTDs are both used to measure temperature.
Q4: PLC programmes are typically developed on a PC using special software. These are downloaded using a serial or Ethernet cable.
Q3: The input and output voltages as well as the rated current and maximum backup time.
Q2: Both relays and contactors have coils used to close their contacts when energized. Contactors have features such as arc suppression due to their requirement to switch larger currents than relays.
Q1: You offer her a latched device that is just the job. You then explain that the momentary pushbutton is doing its job, perhaps using the example of a door bell.
ANSWERS:
HOW DID YOU DO?
Full marks: Well done!

In this month’s Face to Face we speak with Simon Cranton, Managing Director at Doepke UK, and hear about the company’s recent expansion and future plans.
QCan you tell us a bit about your professional background and how you came to lead Doepke UK?
A. I have worked within the electrical industry for nearly 40 years, both in wholesale and as a manufacturer. Initially, I was in sales, and as my commercial experience grew, this led to management positions. I have been Managing Director of Doepke UK for over 20 years, that can’t be right!? Where did that time go?
Q Doepke UK has been on a growth trajectory recently. What key factors have driven that success?
A. While it might sound like a cliché, service has been a key driver of our success. By working closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver tailored solutions, we’ve built a strong relationship of trust. Over the years, this has made us a reliable partner that our clients can count on to grow alongside them.
Q
One of the most visible signs of growth is your new building. What does this expansion mean for Doepke UK and your customers?
A. Our premises in Daventry, Northamptonshire, no longer met our needs as we outgrew the space, so the newly extended building represents a critical step in our expansion. This investment enables us to expand into a larger, more efficient facility, allowing us to support better and provide innovative
solutions to the electrical industry. It’s an evolution that strengthens our ability to serve our customers more effectively and drive future growth.
QWhat new capabilities or improvements does the new facility bring?
A. The new facility brings several key improvements, including six additional offices, state-of-the-art meeting and training spaces, and a designated breakout area (our ‘soft playroom’). These additions are designed to meet the demands of a modern working
environment, providing colleagues with the freedom and tools to collaborate, innovate, and thrive.
Q
You’ve also welcomed new team members recently. What roles have been added, and how does this support your strategic goals?
A. We’ve strengthened key areas across the business. In production, we’ve brought in additional staff to meet growing manufacturing demand. We’ve also expanded our technical team to enhance customer support and grown our marketing function to ensure our messaging is clear, consistent, and reaching the right audiences. As a customer-led business, it’s vital we listen closely, respond quickly, and anticipate where we need to grow – these additions are a direct reflection of that approach.
Q What do you see as the biggest challenge in the electrical industry today – and how is Doepke UK helping to address it?
A. One of the biggest challenges for the electrical industry today is keeping pace with the rapid evolution of technology. New products, new installation methods –it feels like there’s always something new to learn. At Doepke, we focus on making things more transparent and more practical. We’re here to support installers with straightforward information. We’ve always been part of demystifying circuit protection.
QThe heat pump market is expanding rapidly. How is Doepke UK positioning itself in this area?
A. We developed a unique two module Type B RCCB, which provides an affordable device specific for use with ASHP. Doepke listens to electricians and provides solutions; this has been another excellent case study illustrating this approach. It was clear that a regular Type B RCCB would not be suitable for most heat pumps. We led the way in finding a workable solution, something that the contractor could be confident would meet the criteria.
QIn the switchgear market –another critical area – what opportunities or trends are you seeing?
A. This is a crucial part of our business and because we assemble and stock in the UK we have been able to quickly respond to changing demands and provide a fast turnaround of high quality switchgear.
QWith so much change and growth, how do you maintain Doepke UK’s core values and commitment to quality?
“ Our collaborations and relationships with customers underpin our commitment to maintaining our high standards. ”
A. Doepke personnel are key to keeping this; the importance of service runs throughout everything we do. Our collaborations and relationships with customers underpin our commitment to maintaining our high standards.
Q What excites you most about the future of Doepke UK?
A. We are constantly developing new solutions and products, and it is more exciting to lead the way than to follow; I find that exciting. Bringing in new team members is part of this journey and enabling them to help shape our future and inject fresh ideas and initiatives.

Why surge protection devices (SPDs) over split load?
The electrical industry is moving beyond the traditional split load consumer unit in
favour of SPD-equipped solutions — and for good reason. While split load units have long been a cost-effective way to separate and protect circuits, they offer limited defence against transient overvoltages caused by lightning strikes, switching surges, or power fluctuations. SPDs, on the other hand, are specifically designed to safeguard both the installation and connected devices from these potentially damaging voltage spikes. As modern homes and commercial spaces increasingly rely on sensitive electronics –from smart devices to essential control systems –SPD protection is no longer optional but essential for reducing downtime, preventing equipment damage, and enhancing overall electrical safety.
The changeover to SPD-integrated consumer units reflects both evolving regulatory standards and a growing demand for more comprehensive circuit protection.
The 18th Edition of IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) has emphasised the need to assess surge risk in all installations –especially where the failure of equipment could impact safety, public services, or commercial operations. In this context, incorporating SPDs ensures compliance while offering a higher standard of protection.
By choosing a consumer unit with builtin SPD, installers not only meet current code requirements but also simplify installation, reduce clutter within the enclosure, and futureproof the electrical system. It’s a smarter, safer, and more responsible approach to circuit protection.

No longer the preserve of experienced lighting and interior designers, LED strip lighting has grown in popularity over the last decade. A key revenue stream for electrical wholesalers, in this article we speak with Chris Anderson, Technical Manager at Ansell Lighting, who offers insight into the latest solutions and best practices for merchandising and selling.
Although it has been around for the best part of 25 years, it is only more recently that LED strip lighting has become a mainstream lighting solution. Previously the mainstay of experienced designers, the rise of social media and its increasing emphasis on aesthetics and interior design have thrown strip lighting to the fore.
Popular in homes, hospitality and retail spaces alike, LED strip lighting is a versatile lighting option that can be used in an array of different spaces. From illuminating shelving units and wardrobe interiors to ceiling alcoves and other structural features, strip lighting can be used almost anywhere and to create a variety of effects.
With demand surging and end users increasingly aware of its benefits, strip lighting represents a valuable revenue opportunity for wholesalers. To capitalise on this, wholesalers should carefully consider the compilation of their ranges, offering a diverse selection of strip lighting
products that appeal to different applications and demands.
Seamless, dot free COB strips are ideal for spaces where LED strips may be visible such as shopfitting and under cabinet lighting or reflective spaces where a lot of light may bounce back. These strips offer a continuous line of light thanks to a uniform phosphor coating for enhanced aesthetic appearance.
Other popular options include dim to warm strips which offer a choice of colour temperatures, eco strips which prioritise cost-effectiveness, high efficiency strips which offer great energy saving benefits and strips with different cutting points that offer complete control over the exact run length.
There are also versions suitable for outdoor use or in wet spaces such as showers and flexible strip lights which allow the tape to bend around curves and corners – ideal for illuminating curved features.
In addition to the type of strip lighting on offer, when curating a range there are
many other product options wholesalers need to consider and make available. The first is the length of strip lighting sold. Packs commonly range from 5m up to 50m long and wholesalers should ensure that a variety are available to appeal to installers working on different sized projects.
Many strip formats will also be available in different colour options, from white to tunable white, RGB, RGBW and RGBTW. There are even pixel versions available that offer the advantage of individually controllable LEDs - allowing dynamic lighting effects to be created. Ideal for interactive spaces such as bowling alleys or arcades, they allow smooth animations and customisable colour sequences to be created in just about any colour required. Stocking a good selection of these will ensure all types of projects are catered for.
Another factor wholesalers should consider is ensuring they offer LED strips with smart functionality. Appealing to installers working on both smart lighting projects and more standard installations, smart strips offer users complete control
and automation over their lighting use and settings and are extremely popular with homeowners and commercial clients alike. Lights can be programmed to operate at specific times of day and at specified colour and brightness levels for a sophisticated and customised experience –all with a simple voice command or with the use of an app.
Wholesalers will also need to carry a comprehensive selection of LED strip accessories to ensure compatibility and ease of installation. These include a variety of LED drivers - the suitability of which will depend on whether dimming is required and whether the product is being used indoors or outdoors and at what voltage; controllers, pre-wired connectors, flexible connectors and straight connectors. Aluminium profiles are also essential. These are used where strip lighting may be more visible for a more professional aesthetic. Different profiles are needed depending on application and those commonly available include plaster

in, suspended, cove, step edge, recessed and surface. Compatible motion sensors are also popular accessories, used inside cupboards and wardrobes to ensure lights come on when doors open.
As with all products, when it comes to sales generation wholesalers should ensure that staff are well educated on the LED strip lighting products they sell, their differences and suitability for specific applications.
Specific product factors staff will need to be aware of include SDCM, which refers to standard deviation colour matching –this measures the closeness of colour between LEDs on a printed circuit board. The lower the value, the closer the colour consistency will be.
Copper PCB weight is another term staff should understand and refers to the thickness of the copper used in the printed circuit board. The higher the weight, the
better the performance of the strip.
LED pitch refers to the distance between the LED chips on the printed circuit board. The closer the distance the smoother and more seamless the light distribution will appear.
One of the major benefits of strip lighting is that it is also incredibly easy to install and set up – something that staff should be quick to highlight to wholesale customers during the sales process. Most LED strip lights have an adhesive backing, allowing them to be mounted instantly and directly onto clean, dry surfaces without the need for brackets or screws.
Mike Collins, Managing Director at Ovia, shines a light on some of the issues facing electrical wholesalers and how Ovia is helping to mitigate those challenges.
The lighting industry continues to evolve rapidly, driven by shifting technologies, regulatory updates and market pressures. At Ovia, we recognise that our wholesaler partners face daily challenges in maintaining competitiveness and delivering value to contractors, specifiers and end-users.
The transition to LED, connected lighting and increasingly sophisticated control systems has expanded product offerings dramatically. Wholesalers now manage more SKUs, often with highly technical specifications, while customers expect instant product knowledge.
Prices for panels, battens, downlights and basic floodlights have dropped significantly over the past 5–7 years and the commoditisation of LED lighting has led to increased competition from brands on price with near-identical specifications, eroding differentiation.
There is intense competition from online sellers and direct imports, and market saturation. Contractors and facilities managers now price-check online, putting pressure on wholesalers, requiring them to differentiate beyond pricing alone.
Global supply chain volatility, fluctuating demand and long lead times can leave wholesalers struggling to maintain the right stock levels while controlling costs.
Contractors increasingly expect online ordering, instant stock visibility and digital tools for quoting and submittals, pushing wholesalers to enhance their digital capabilities.
In today’s competitive lighting industry, where technology rapidly evolves and prices fluctuate, a strong brand is one of the most valuable assets a lighting manufacturer can possess. Beyond logos and marketing slogans, a brand encapsulates trust, quality and a promise that customers rely on when choosing lighting solutions for their homes, businesses, or cities. A respected brand demonstrates consistent product quality, longer warranties and a proven track record.
Lighting is integral to safety, productivity and comfort. When customers select a lighting brand, they are not just purchasing a product; they are investing in reliability. A well-established brand assures architects, contractors and end-users that the luminaires will perform as promised, meet compliance standards and be supported with service throughout their lifecycle.
Ovia, a well-established brand following more than six successful years operating within the lighting industry, has the backing of Scolmore Group. As a family-run business for more than 36 years, the company is agile, able to make decisions quickly and react to market changes to continually deliver improved products and services. A sustained programme of reinvestment in the business infrastructure as well as its people, is what drives the business.
“ A strong brand differentiates a manufacturer beyond technical data sheets, signalling design leadership, sustainability commitments and innovation.”
The lighting sector is saturated with manufacturers offering similar specifications and technology. A strong brand differentiates a manufacturer beyond technical data sheets, signalling design leadership, sustainability commitments and innovation.
A partnership with Ovia guarantees a range of high quality, value-for-money products backed up by excellent local stocks, next day delivery and outstanding customer service. When Atos Jiu-Jitsu Gym, the number one jiu-jitsu academy in the UK, set out to upgrade the lighting in two of its studios, the goal was clear: create safe, functional, and visually striking environments for both training and welcoming members. Ovia delivered the perfect solution with two of its core products - Sprite 35W recessed downlights and Inceptor Duo up-and-down linear luminaires.
Installation
The installations were carried out at the organisation’s West Midlands-based academies located in Sutton Coldfield and Solihull, with the gyms’ matted training zones and reception areas, showcasing the installer-friendly design of Ovia’s lighting solutions.
“Installing the Ovia Sprite downlights was an absolute pleasure”, said electrician James Papageorge (Live Sparks), who was tasked with the job. “The push-fit connectors streamlined the whole process, allowing for rapid and efficient wiring without compromising on reliability. This feature alone shaved valuable time off installation, and that’s a win for any tradesperson working on a tight schedule.”
James was equally impressed with the Sprite’s click-connect feature which made removal of the downlights a breeze. He continued: “This thoughtful design doesn’t just benefit the installer; it also proved as a game-changer for the decorator. With the ability to detach the lights safely and quickly, the painter could touch up the
ceiling without worrying about the live conductors. No fiddly disconnection, no risks - just straightforward access that kept the project moving smoothly.”
Above the matted areas, the Sprite downlights provided bright, even illumination tailored to the demands of a high energy jiu-jitsu gym. Their recessed design ensured a clean, unobstructed finish, while delivering the lumen output needed for members to train effectively and safely. The reception area has also benefitted from the same sleek aesthetic and dependable performance creating a professional first impression for visitors.
Ovia’s Sprite recessed LED downlights with CTA switch are IP54-rated aluminium downlights supplied with TRIAC dimmable drivers which are pre-wired with a Fast Fit Flow connector or 3-in-1 multi-function dimming option for quick and easier installation. There are four sizes available3”, 5”, 6” and 8” diameter - and a choice of 10W, 13W, 18W, 25W and 35W versions, to cover a wide range of installation types and requirements. They have a five year warranty.
James also recommended Ovia’s Inceptor Duo for a particular area of the space. Duo is a sleek up-and-down dimmable linear luminaire and it provided the ideal lighting solution on the small mezzanine floor where the ceiling is low and light was needed to brighten up the area.
Inceptor Duo offers installers and their clients a complete custom dual lighting solution and is perfect for accentuating design features both high and low. It is

The luminaire features a dual CTA switchOFF, cool white, warm white and day light and the up and down lights can be controlled separately. Inceptor Duo is dimmable and emergency versions are available.
When purchasing a product like the Inceptor Duo, you’re not just investing in quality, you’re also investing in a sustainable future. The Inceptor Sustainability Promise drives the decisions and actions of Ovia as the company prioritise sustainability in all aspects of its business operations. To comply with the Inceptor Sustainability Promise, products are tested to complete the TM66 form created by CIBSE. The testing involves gathering thorough sustainability evidence which supports the specifications of Ovia’s product ranges.

AI is now impacting every industry and the electrical wholesaler sector is no different. Wayne Fraser, Chief Information & AI Officer at Klipboard, looks at how AI in electrical wholesale can power smarter trade decisions.
With the rapid acceleration of EV infrastructure, the growth of smart homes, and the increasing adoption of renewable technologies, the electrical wholesale sector is becoming more complex - and more central to the wider economy. Our industry is no longer just about supplying product; we’re enabling critical national infrastructure. And with that shift, the operational pressures have grown. Businesses now face tighter margins, higher customer expectations, and a growing demand for technical expertise. That’s where AI comes in. Not as a future promise, but as a present-day necessity.
Over the past 18 months, we’ve seen a fundamental shift in how wholesale distributors - particularly in the electrical space - are approaching AI. It’s moved
beyond boardroom conversations and into real operational impact. Across the UK wholesale distribution market, nearly 50% of businesses now rank AI as a top investment priority. And for good reason: the challenges we face aren’t getting simpler. AI isn’t hype anymore, it’s how we start to solve long-standing problems at scale.
Tackling long-standing operational friction
Electrical wholesalers, more than most, have always had to deal with intense stock complexity. Whether it’s tracking reels of cable by the metre, handling variants of the same product line with minor but critical technical differences or managing customer-specific pricing agreements across thousands of SKUs, these are problems that don’t lend themselves to manual workarounds. Historically, many of these processes were either spreadsheetbased, or bolted onto ageing ERP
systems. That’s not a sustainable approach for organisations that want to lead in today’s climate.
What we’re seeing now is the market turning to the next generation of software. Platforms where AI is built-in from the ground up. Take inventory management, for example. At Klipboard, the ERP One platform integrates natively with AI tools to support intelligent stock forecasting. By combining internal sales history with external data points - such as seasonal demand, project timelines, and even shifts in EV infrastructure investment - merchants are able to make smarter decisions about what to stock, when to reorder, and how much capital to commit.
The benefits don’t stop at the warehouse. Logistics and fleet operations are evolving too. In distribution, the cost of delivery has always been a delicate balance between efficiency and service. Kilpboard has integrated AI-led auto-routing into its Transport Management (VIGO) platform. By using live traffic data and historical delivery performance, Klipboard helps drivers complete more drops per shift, reduce fuel usage, and improve on-time performance, all while supporting the sustainability commitments that more of our customers now expect.
At the same time, we’re seeing AI enhance the customer experience, both online and at the trade counter. AI-powered assistants, like Klipboard Copilot, are helping branch staff and customer service teams to quickly answer common questions about stock availability, pricing,
“ We’re seeing AI enhance the customer experience, both online and at the trade counter. ”
and delivery updates. These tools aren’t designed to replace people, they’re there to support them. By handling repetitive or routine requests, AI frees up teams to focus on what really matters: building customer relationships, solving more complex problems, and driving additional value through every interaction.
There’s a lot of noise about AI – but in many cases, it’s just old automation with a new label. What has changed is the processing power availability has grown year on year and also LLM’s capability and availability, thus enabling a much richer experience.
For electrical wholesalers, the stakes are high. The product catalogue is expanding. Customer demand is rising. And the old
ways of working simply don’t scale. AI offers a clear path forward. It enables leaner operations, reduces overstock, improves fulfilment accuracy, and supports better service delivery - without the need to grow headcount.
AI won’t transform the industry overnight. But the shift is already underway. It’s already transforming from what used to be just a buzzword, to now cementing itself as a business-critical function in the distribution sector across the board. The businesses that act now, and who invest not in buzzwords, but in capability, will be the ones that have the greatest chance of success in the future. TO UNCOVER MORE VISIT:

This is apart from the potentially devastating results of such incidents.
The new Redline VDE range features 19 SKUs including side cutters, cable cutters, snipe nose pliers, combination pliers and the Combicutter – available in a variety of sizes to accommodate different user preferences.

Since Armeg introduced the Twister Impact Masonry drill bits last, they’ve been a huge success with electricians. On the back of this, two further Impact Masonry drill bits have just been added to the range. Firstly, the Twister Impact Masonry XL is another impact-rated bit that features SQS flute technology, but with a longer 110 mm working length for through-fixture drilling. Although designed for masonry use, these bits have multimaterial capabilities, so a wooden baton can be held to masonry and the drill bit makes short work of both materials before then securely driving the baton with a frame-fixing. Secondly, in answer to demand for a depth-stop drill bit suitable for hard materials such as concrete and engineering brick, new Impact Masonry Plus bits bring SQS flute technology to SDS and hammer action drilling.

“ IEC 60598-1 has held a pivotal role for lighting products since its introduction in 1979.”
Association, explains what the 10th Edition of IEC 60598-1 means for the lighting industry.
Standards have long been the cornerstone of product compliance within the electrotechnical industry, ensuring safety, quality and reliability. Among these, IEC 60598-1 has held a pivotal role for lighting products since its introduction in 1979. This standard specifies general requirements for luminaires, including tests to verify their safety and performance, making it one of the most widely used standards in the electrical sector.
In December 2024, the 10th Edition of IEC 60598-1 was published, marking the most comprehensive review since the standard’s inception. This milestone introduces significant changes, including new clause numbers, updated annex references and numerous technical advancements. Here’s an overview of what this landmark edition entails and its implications for manufacturers, test laboratories and other stakeholders.
Alignment with new IEC drafting rules
For years, IEC 60598-1 had avoided changes stemming from evolving IEC rules for drafting standards. However, the 2024 edition aligns with these new rules, resulting in a revised structure. Manufacturers and test labs must now familiarise themselves with the updated layout and revise their documentation to reflect the new clause references.
The 10th Edition introduces a range of technical modifications to address modern lighting technologies and safety requirements. Notable changes include:
● Surge protection requirements: Enhanced specifications to improve the robustness of luminaires against electrical surges.
● New terminology: Definitions added for terms such as Active Part, Current Carrying Part, Live Part and Hazardous Live Part, ensuring clarity and consistency.
● Conductor mechanical stress tests: Updated methods to ensure greater reliability in various operating conditions.
● Battery luminaires and magnetic suspension methods: Inclusion of these categories for the first time, reflecting advancements in lighting design and application.
● SELV circuit insulation: Revised requirements to ensure the safety of extra-low voltage circuits.
● Serviceable and replaceable components: New criteria for components that require maintenance or replacement.
● Photobiological safety: Integration of photobiological safety requirements directly into the base standard, marking a significant step forward in addressing light-induced health risks.
Navigating the changes: Annexes O and V
To assist stakeholders in navigating the extensive updates, the standard includes two new annexes:
“ The 10th Edition is the result of rigorous discussions and meticulous work by IEC TC34/SC34D/WG1 and the editing group SC34D/EG3.”
● Annex O: Provides a schedule of critical tests, offering guidance on additional testing requirements during recertification projects.
● Annex V: Explains cross-referencing between the 9th and 10th editions, simplifying the transition for users of both versions and related Part 2 standards.
These annexes are invaluable tools for ensuring a smooth adoption of the new standard, particularly given the scope and depth of the changes.
The 10th Edition is the result of rigorous discussions and meticulous work by IEC TC34/SC34D/WG1 and the editing group SC34D/EG3. IEC is a multinational organisation with contributors coming from all over the world however key UK contributions came from the following experts:
● Andy Hughes, Zumtobel Group
● Lawrence Barling, The Lighting Industry Association
● Krish Govinden, formerly of The Lighting Industry Association, now with OPSS (Office for Product Safety and Standards, Department for Business and Trade)
● Stuart Burns, The Lighting Industry Association
Their expertise and dedication have ensured that the updated standard addresses both current and future needs of the lighting industry.
Preparing for the transition
For manufacturers, test labs and certification bodies, the 10th Edition represents a significant shift. Updating internal processes, training personnel and revising technical documentation are essential steps for compliance. The inclusion of tools like Annexes O and V will help streamline this process, but early adoption and proactive engagement with the new standard will be key to a successful transition.
The 10th Edition of IEC 60598-1 is more than just an update; it’s a reflection of the evolving landscape of lighting technology and safety. By embracing these changes, the industry can continue to deliver innovative, safe and compliant lighting solutions for years to come.
