HEATWAVE HUSTLE elcome to the September issue of PEW. Has it cooled down yet? As much as I love the summer the five (at the time of writing) heatwaves have become quite exhausting. But then for so many years we have complained that we’ve barely had a summer worth talking about at all, so I guess this is payback! So just how hot is too hot? For the electrical wholesaling industry there is of course a knock-on effect. In our homes, factories and offices air conditioning gets switched on, refrigeration systems work harder and even the humble portable fan suddenly becomes a highly desirable bit of kit as we try to keep cool. So for wholesalers, heatwaves can provide a useful reminder of just how quickly demand can change. Products that might sit quietly on the shelves for months can suddenly become urgent requirements, while contractors can find themselves responding to customers who want cooling solutions installed earlier than yesterday. It also highlights the importance of having the right conversations with customers. Is the existing installation capable of handling additional loads? Is the equipment being installed appropriate for the environment? Are customers looking for a quick fix, or is there an opportunity to discuss a more efficient, longer-term solution? Heatwaves aren't simply uncomfortable weather events. They are becoming an increasingly important consideration for the way we design, install and use buildings. The electrical system that was perfectly adequate when a property was primarily concerned with heating in winter may face very different demands when cooling becomes a regular part of summer life. And while nobody wants to spend a perfectly good sunny day talking about distribution boards and electrical loads, that's precisely where the wholesaler's expertise comes into its own. The industry has always been about more than boxes on shelves. At its best, wholesaling is about helping contractors find the right product, understand what they need and get the job done safely and efficiently. So perhaps the next time somebody complains that it's "too hot", spare a thought for the electrical industry, because when the heat is on, there's a good chance we're working a little harder too!

NEWS & VIEWS SCOLMORE EXPANDS CHARITY SUPPORT

SCOLMORE GROUP EXTENDS SUPPORT TO BETTER PATHWAYS Scolmore Group, through its community‑focused platform Scolmore Connect, has announced its growing support for Better Pathways - a respected mental health charity based in Birmingham, West Midlands. The organisation provides life-changing support for people with mental health issues and disabilities, helping over 130 participants each week to develop essential vocational skills that prepare them for employment and volunteering opportunities. The partnership between Scolmore Group and Better Pathways has been long-standing. The charity’s social enterprise, Better Packing, has delivered commercial packing services to Unicrimp – part of the Scolmore Group – for four years. With up to five volunteers assigned each

day to Unicrimp’s Tamworth-based site to help pack some of Unicrimp’s best-selling trade tubs, this collaboration has not only created meaningful work opportunities but has also demonstrated how strong partnerships between businesses and charities can deliver lasting social impact. Roof repairs During a recent visit to Better Pathways, Lee Taylor, Scolmore Group’s Head of Operations, learned of the charity’s ongoing struggle with persistent water leaks through its ‘Northern Light’ industrial roof, an issue that threatened the integrity of the building the charity has occupied since the 1970s. In response, Scolmore Group acted swiftly, allocating funding to enable the charity to carry out essential roof repairs.

The much-needed refurbishment has ensured a safer, more welcoming environment for service users, staff, and volunteers, protecting the future of Better Pathways’ work for years to come. Sue Roberts, Chief Executive Officer of Better Pathways, said: “We love working with the Unicrimp team and are thrilled that Scolmore Group is helping us in these ways. This support will help us to maintain our building into the future and means that we can open up our space to more participants who need our support. We cannot thank Lee and his team enough.”

NEW RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS LATE PAYMENT ISSUE A new independent report commissioned by Klipboard has revealed that late payments have become almost universal across the wholesale and distribution sector, with 98% of businesses reporting overdue customer payments. Based on a survey of over 300 distribution businesses and 250 trade buyers from across the UK, the research was commissioned to better understand how payment processes are affecting

customer experience, operational efficiency and cash flow across the distribution sector. The results explore the biggest payment challenges facing the industry, the causes and impact of late payments, the most common issues buyers have with payments and the ways customers would prefer to pay. Key findings ● 98% of distributors deal with late payments ● 56% spend over six hours per week on manual payment admin ● 96% employ at least one person dedicated to payments and credit control ● 94% believe offering multiple payment options boosts customer loyalty ● Just 12% of distributors operate with a single payment provider The findings suggest late payments

remain a near-universal challenge for distributors, placing pressure on cash flow while creating additional work for finance and credit control teams. The issue remains firmly in the spotlight following the UK Government’s announcement earlier this year of new measures aimed at tackling late payments and strengthening protections for suppliers. At the same time, distributors are under growing pressure to offer customers more choice in how and when they pay. While many businesses have introduced additional payment methods and providers to improve the customer experience, doing so can create disconnected systems, more manual administration and more difficult reconciliation. FACE TO FACE

FACE TO FACE VENT-AXIA In this month’s Face to Face we speak with Ashley Smith, Product Manager at Vent-Axia, and find out more about the ventilation sector. When was Vent-Axia formed and how has the company evolved over the years?

Q

A. This year marks Vent-Axia’s 90th anniversary. We were founded in 1936, the same year we invented the first electrically operated window ventilator, and innovation has remained at the heart of the business ever since. There have been many milestones along the way, from launching our Standard Range extractor fan in 1961, a design classic that sold over one million units, to introducing our Lo-Carbon range in 2009, helping drive the industry towards more energy-efficient ventilation. Although Vent-Axia has evolved over the years, one thing that has not changed is the breadth of our product range and our focus on meeting the needs of the market and providing the right ventilation solution for the application. Intermittent fans continue to be an important part of

our range for the retrofit market, but following changes to Part F of the Building Regulations in 2021, we have seen increasing demand for continuous ventilation, including decentralised mechanical extract ventilation (dMEV), as well as decentralised heat recovery. Evolution is not just about products either. Supporting wholesalers with product knowledge, regulatory guidance, marketing materials and access to experienced sales representatives remains a key part of what we do. Having a trusted manufacturer behind you can make a real difference. Has greater awareness of indoor air quality and energy efficiency changed what customers are looking for?

Q

A. Absolutely. As energy prices have risen and homes have become more energy efficient, customers are increasingly interested in ventilation solutions that minimise heat loss while helping maintain good indoor air quality. Heat recovery is an important part of this. Traditionally, Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) has involved a central unit and extensive ductwork, which can be challenging in retrofit applications. But by opting for decentralised MVHR using smaller wall and ceiling units, dramatically reduces the amount of ductwork required. At Vent-Axia we have a comprehensive range of decentralised MVHR including the Lo-Carbon Heat Save, Lo-Carbon Tempra and Lo-Carbon Calido, which help maximise energy savings by introducing heat recovery into properties. Positive Input Ventilation (PIV) also remains popular, particularly for existing homes experiencing condensation and

14 SEPTEMBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

mould. Installed in the loft, PIV provides electricians with an effective whole-house solution that replaces stale, moistureladen air with filtered, drier air. How can electrical wholesalers make the most of the growing dMEV market?

Q

A. Continuous-running dMEV now accounts for around one in four fans sold into the UK, creating a significant opportunity for wholesalers. By stocking high-quality, feature-rich dMEV products, wholesalers can help electricians move towards more advanced ventilation solutions while benefiting from higher-value sales. There is also a clear upselling opportunity. Products offering intelligent controls, quiet operation and improved indoor air quality give installers something tangible to discuss with customers rather than simply competing on the price of a basic extractor fan. This helps installers secure higher-value projects, offering an upsell or spec-break. For example, VentAxia’s PureAir Cleanse is the industry’s first dedicated continuous-running dMEV to feature an integrated IAQ sensor. For wholesalers, products like this provide a strong over-the-counter opportunity as they offer installers additional functionality while remaining straightforward to recommend and install.

Q

What products are currently proving particularly popular?

A. Intermittent fans remain popular, but the

014_PEW_SEPT26_Layout 1 14/08/2026 12:23 Page 15

direction of travel is clearly towards continuous ventilation. As homes become more airtight through insulation and other energy-efficiency improvements, effective ventilation becomes increasingly important. The amendments to Part F of the Building Regulations have helped redress the balance between energy efficiency and ventilation, but there is still a need to improve awareness of the requirements. In existing homes, moving from intermittent to continuous ventilation can provide a straightforward route to compliance while also offering an energyefficient solution for households. This creates an opportunity for wholesalers to help electricians understand the different technologies available and select the appropriate solution for each project.

a decade ahead of the UK Government’s 2050 target. Our approach covers both the products we manufacture and how we manufacture them. We have been transforming production by moving from virgin to recycled plastic, while continuing to develop low-carbon products that can help customers reduce energy use and decarbonise buildings. For wholesalers looking to identify energy-efficient products quickly, our Lo-Carbon range provides a simple signpost, with products featuring energy-efficient EC/DC motors. Heat recovery will also be an important part of the journey towards lower-carbon homes because it allows properties to maintain effective ventilation while recovering heat that would otherwise be lost.

What is Vent-Axia doing to improve sustainability?

What are Vent-Axia’s priorities for wholesalers over the next 12 months?

A. At Vent-Axia we are committed to improving indoor air sustainably. We have set a target to achieve Net Zero by 2040,

A. Supporting our wholesaler customers remains a major priority, particularly as the market continues its shift towards dMEV

Q

Q

and other continuous ventilation solutions. That means increasing product knowledge and awareness and providing wholesalers with practical tools, including customer cheat sheets and marketing collateral, to help branch staff confidently answer questions and recommend appropriate products. We are also introducing a new Point of Sale (POS) range designed to improve product visibility and help wholesalers engage customers with ventilation. Importantly, unlike traditional POS, the displays are reusable. As products, promotions and campaigns change, the fan and printed bulletin can be updated without replacing the entire display. Ultimately, our objective is to make ventilation easier to sell, giving wholesalers the products, information and manufacturer support they need as the market continues to evolve. SPECIAL REPORT

SMARTER BY DESIGN

S

peed, consistency and reliability remain central priorities for electrical contractors working across residential and light commercial projects. As installation schedules become tighter and productivity becomes increasingly important, distribution equipment that simplifies the wiring process can deliver significant practical benefits on site.

Installation efficiency Live Electrical’s SRN range of metal consumer units has been developed with installation efficiency as a core design objective. Rather than focusing purely on enclosure construction, the range adopts a system approach that combines a streamlined internal architecture with simplified circuit connection methods. The result is a consumer unit designed to reduce installation time while maintaining the performance and compliance expected of modern distribution equipment.

This flexibility is “particularly useful when working within confined installation spaces.

”

Umer Farooq, Technical Product Manager at Live Electrical Distribution UK, looks at how the SRN consumer unit range simplifies installation. Suitable for both surface-mounted and recessed (flush-mounted) applications, the SRN range is intended for use across a wide variety of domestic and light commercial installations throughout the UK. Practical enclosure design The SRN enclosure is manufactured from robust non-combustible steel, providing the mechanical strength of IK05 and compliant with BS EN 61439-3 standard. Multiple cable knockouts are positioned around the enclosure, including the rear panel, allowing cables to enter the board from different directions depending on site layout and routing requirements. This flexibility is particularly useful when working within confined installation spaces, enabling installers to organise cable entry in a way that minimises congestion within the enclosure. Each board is supplied complete with a DIN rail, neutral and earth terminal bar, ensuring the installer has the necessary internal components ready for immediate assembly. The internal space has been configured to provide clear access for wiring, helping maintain an organised layout

that supports straightforward inspection and testing once installation is complete. While these features contribute to installation practicality, the most significant advantages of the SRN range lie within its protective device configuration and busbar architecture. Single-Module 1P+N BD devices A defining feature of the SRN consumer unit is its use of single module 1P+N bidirectional protective devices. The CN range MCBs disconnect both the live and neutral conductors simultaneously, with overcurrent protection provided in the live pole and coordinated switching of the neutral pole. The RNC RCBOs also switch both conductors and are designed without separate neutral fly leads. In many conventional consumer units, RCBOs are supplied with flexible neutral fly leads that must be routed individually to the neutral terminal bar. As the number of circuits increases, these additional conductors can create congestion within the enclosure, increasing installation time and making inspection, fault-finding and maintenance more difficult.

SPECIAL REPORT

Within the SRN system, both the live and neutral conductors of each outgoing circuit are terminated directly at the relevant CN MCB or RNC RCBO. The devices receive their incoming live and neutral connections through the integrated busbar, removing the need for individual neutral fly-lead connections on the RCBOs. This arrangement reduces internal wiring, creates a cleaner and more organised layout, and provides clearer access to circuit terminations. Installers benefit from a faster and more consistent wiring process, while the reduced number of separate connections helps minimise the potential for installation errors.

Scalable Busbar 100A Rated

Compatible MCBs and RCBOs can be mounted directly onto the busbar without separate neutral fly leads or additional neutral connections to the terminal bar, allowing the board to be populated and wired more quickly and consistently. Modular busbar scalability Another practical advantage of the SRN system is its modular busbar architecture. The 100A busbar assembly comprises interconnecting sections that can be joined by sliding them together. This modular approach allows the busbar configuration to be matched to different consumer unit sizes and circuit requirements without cutting the busbar or carrying out complex modifications. The same system can therefore be used across smaller domestic boards and larger multi-circuit configurations. The design also supports simpler product selection and stock management, as compatible modular sections can be used across a range of SRN consumer unit sizes.

Installer-focused design By addressing practical installation challenges - including wiring congestion, repetitive circuit connections and internal component organisation, the SRN range demonstrates how considered product engineering can improve efficiency on site. The elimination of neutral fly leads, combined with the integrated live and neutral busbar system and its modular architecture, enables installers to assemble and wire consumer units more quickly while maintaining a clean, organised and accessible internal layout. For contractors seeking distribution equipment that supports efficient installation without compromising safety, reliability or compliance, the SRN consumer unit range offers a practical solution designed around the demands of modern electrical work.

Integrated live and neutral busbar system Complementing the compatible MCB and RCBO design is the SRN range’s integrated 100A copper busbar system. Unlike conventional arrangements in which live and neutral distribution rely on separate components or additional wiring, the DPN busbar incorporates both conductors within a single compact assembly. The busbar provides live and neutral connections between the main switch and compatible outgoing protective devices through a unified distribution structure. By combining both conductors within one assembly, the system reduces the number of separate internal components and connections required within the consumer unit. For installers, this creates a more streamlined assembly process.

BRIGHT IDEAS As installation projects continue to demand greater efficiency, lighting manufacturers are placing increased emphasis on products that simplify specification, reduce installation time and offer greater flexibility on site. Luke Bush, Brand Manager at Saxby Lighting, looks at a new professional lighting range which reflects this shift.

F

eatures such as selectable outputs, plug-and-play accessories and improved cable management are now becoming standard expectations rather than premium additions. Saxby's latest professional lighting range reflects this, with several products developed to address the practical challenges faced by installers while maintaining flexibility for a wide range of commercial and residential applications. THE EvoX bulkhead Saxby’s new EvoX bulkhead has been designed to provide flexibility across a wide range of applications, combining multiple installation options within a single, adaptable fitting. Suitable for both wall and ceiling mounting and boasting a hinged tray, the EvoX has been developed with versatility in mind, allowing it to meet the changing requirements of different environments and installation scenarios. The fitting can be installed with or without its decorative bezel, giving specifiers and installers the choice between a more traditional bulkhead appearance or a simplified utility lighting solution. Selectable colour temperature and wattage provide additional flexibility, whilst reducing the number of product variants required on site. Installation efficiency is further improved through the detachable gear tray, which allows the base to be installed and fully wired during first fix before the gear tray is fitted during second fix. This separation of installation stages

helps to simplify the workflow on site, reducing handling and making the overall installation process more efficient. Saxby has also helped to simplify the testing process. The EvoX features a push-fit loop-in/loop-out connector with integrated testing points compatible with GS38 probes, allowing installers to carry out R1+R2 and insulation resistance testing quickly and safely without the need to disconnect and rewire each fitting individually. By simply removing the connector from the driver, testing can be completed efficiently before reconnecting the fitting. Further installation flexibility is provided through four 20mm conduit entry points on the side of the fitting and Besa box compatibility, accommodating a variety of wiring configurations and installation requirements. Optional plain and eyelid bezels, alongside true plug-and-play emergency and sensor accessories, allow the fitting to be adapted both during and after installation, providing additional functionality without the need for extensive modification.

24 SEPTEMBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

The LinX20 batten For linear applications, the LinX20 batten has been designed on similar foundations. Within the base there are multiple positions where the push fit connector can be located allowing for flexibility on cable entry; also boasting 20mm conduit entry at both ends and Besa box compatibility. The batten features a push-fit loop-in/loop-out connector with integrated testing points compatible with GS38 probes, allowing installers to carry out R1+R2 and insulation resistance testing quickly and safely without the need to disconnect and rewire each fitting individually. By simply removing the connector from the driver, testing can be completed efficiently before reconnecting the fitting. The LinX20 features a hinged gear tray for easy access during installation. By releasing the two internal locking clips, the gear tray can be completely detached from the base, allowing installers to complete first fix by mounting the bases and routing cables before returning to fit the gear trays during second fix. The removable hinge system also enables the diffuser to be detached from the base without requiring reattachment during installation, reducing handling and helping to improve efficiency on site. Available in 4ft, 5ft and 6ft lengths, the LinX20 is offered in both selectable colour temperature and wattage versions, alongside single-colour options. A range of plug-and-play sensors and emergency modules can also be added without the use of tools.

LIGHTING

The LinX65 batten Design on the principles found throughout the LinX20 and EvoX ranges, the LinX65 combines performance with features that help simplify installation. It combines an IP65 rating for protection against dust and water ingress with an IK08 impact rating, making it well suited to demanding commercial, industrial and utility environments. Selectable colour temperature and wattage provide greater flexibility, enabling a single product to suit a variety of applications while reducing the need to carry multiple product variants and ensuring consistency throughout a site.

The push-fit loop-in/loop-out connector has integrated testing points suitable for GS38 probes, allowing to carry out the R1+R2 and IR test incredibly easily and support quicker and safer installation, while multiple cable fixing positions within the base offer added flexibility when working with different wiring configurations. Together, these features are designed to help streamline installation without compromising performance or durability. Installation flexibility is further enhanced by a range of cable entry options which include; 20mm pop-out conduit entry points on the rear and ends, together with side drill-out points and full BESA box compatibility, giving installers greater freedom to route cables in a way that best suits the application. Locking spring clips are designed to remain securely in the open position during installation, reducing the need to hold them back while refitting the diffuser and making for a quicker install. The mounting brackets also feature centrally offset fixing points, simplifying alignment and helping

to achieve a straightforward installation. As with the wider X-Series range, the LinX65 is compatible with a selection of common plug-and-play sensors and emergency modules, allowing additional functionality to be integrated quickly and easily. This modular approach enables the luminaire to be tailored to the specific requirements of each project, without the need for complex installation or additional tools, these modules are true plug-andplay, simply clicking into place. Collectively, these products demonstrate how lighting design is increasingly focused not only on performance once installed, but also on reducing complexity throughout the installation process. By incorporating adaptable configurations, simplified wiring and modular accessories, manufacturers are responding to the industry's growing demand for solutions that improve efficiency without compromising functionality. LIGHTING

SPORTS STARS We hear from ROBUS on how modular solutions can provide a major advantage when it comes to sports lighting projects.

S

ports lighting is having a major upgrade. Ageing metal halide and high-intensity discharge (HID) systems are steadily being replaced with LED technology across pitches and courts of every size. But that's only part of the story. Expectations of what modern sports lighting can achieve have grown considerably, from smart controls to the high-performance illumination needed for televised sport, to entertaining crowds with dynamic lighting scenes. This is putting electricians to the test. Not only do you need to keep pace with these developments, but you also need a solution flexible enough to adapt to different sports, classifications, and the shift from training sessions to matchday performance. That’s why this year, ROBUS launched STADION: a modular sports lighting solution designed to perform not just for the crowd, but for the installer.

You can easily scale from “a grassroots court to a midtier club pitch and then to a national ground.

”

ASYMMETRIC LENSES

From grassroots to national pitches For years, achieving scale in sports lighting meant working across several product lines to cover different sizes of project. That meant juggling multiple SKUs, stock inefficiencies, and complicated systems. STADION takes a different approach. Rather than specifying different luminaires for different applications, electricians can now build the exact output they need using stackable 600W modules. One modular range, three power options, and a contractor-led design built to adapt on-site. Stackable power, scalable output STADION is made up of individual light modules, each rated at 600W (84,000Lm). These modules can be stacked together to reach 1200W (168,000Lm) or 1800W (252,000Lm), all at 5700K colour temperature. That means you can easily scale from a grassroots court to a mid-tier club pitch and then to a national ground with the STADION range. Precision aiming and adjustable brackets Words you never want to hear from the pitch: “The light was in my eyes!” It only takes a couple of badly aimed luminaires to turn a great game into a frustrating experience.

PRECISION AIMING DEVICE

VISOR

STADION is designed to minimise glare from the outset. Combined with the precision aiming device and adjustable brackets, offering ±90° on the main bracket and a further ±30° per module, electricians can achieve the accurate positioning needed to maximise illumination and minimise glare. Mix and match optics with asymmetric lenses Bright spots and dark patches can show up quickly across a pitch, even when the average lux reading looks fine on paper. STADION's mix and match asymmetric lenses (narrow, medium, and wide) mean each light source can be fine-tuned to deliver consistent coverage exactly where it's needed, maintaining uniform illumination across the entire playing surface. Narrow and wide are assembled to order by ROBUS’s Customised Conversions Department, while medium is available as a stock item. The next question is what that light needs to do, and the answer changes by the hour. As Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs) grow in popularity, the same facility might host five-a-side football one evening and netball training the next, each with its own lighting requirements.

event lighting, and it turns STADION into a genuine entertainment tool. Think synchronised lighting scenes for player entrances, presentations, or special events. 2 part connector

Energy efficiency is another important consideration. A training session doesn't call for the same output as a live match, and running full power for both wastes energy. Adaptable controls have moved from a nice-to-have to a necessity. STADION brings this flexibility together in one fixture, with 0-10V dimming, DALI, and DMX options. 0-10V covers reliable dimming for everyday use. DALI brings intelligent, energy-saving management, useful where a client wants lighting levels to adjust automatically depending on use. DMX is where things get interesting. It's the same protocol used for concert and

Built to handle the elements Add anti-corrosion die-cast aluminium, a 720-hour salt spray test, and a dual-layer tempered glass and PC lens protection, and the result is a fixture built to handle exposed, high-use sites without constant intervention. Wide airflow gaps between the cooling fins help dissipate heat efficiently, supporting long-term performance. The low-copper-content housing also acts as an effective heat sink while providing enhanced corrosion resistance. And with up to 145Lm/W efficacy and an IP66/IK08 rating as standard, scalability doesn't come at the cost of performance or durability. For projects with particular site or specification requirements, STADION is also available with a Marine Grade option for coastal or high-corrosion locations, a

Adjustable brackets

4000K colour temperature option where 5700K isn't the right fit, and a 3000K option for warmer lighting schemes. Complete solution The demands of modern sports lighting can be complex, from meeting strict standards and balancing energy costs, to managing maintenance and environmental impact. Solutions such as ROBUS STADION offer a complete solution, from initial lighting design to aftercare support.

TOOLS

Draper Tools gives us some insight into the must-have tools for electricians and highlights the importance of choosing high quality products.

HANDS ON

APPROACH

F

or electrical wholesalers, the hand tool aisle is one of the most vital areas of the business and an essential way to build loyalty and trust. For the electricians who walk through your doors, the right pliers, screwdrivers and cutters are safety-critical kit that they'll trust their hands to, day in, day out, often while live testing. This means getting the hand tool offering right isn't just good merchandising, it’s central to how your business is judged by the trade. Investing in quality hand tools Electricians work in an environment where a poorly insulated tool isn't just inconvenient, it's dangerous. That means wholesalers who can talk confidently about VDE certification and insulation standards can build long-term trust with customers. For managers and counter staff, that starts with understanding what ‘quality’ actually means on the technical spec sheet, not just the price tag. What to look for When assessing which hand tool ranges deserve shelf space, a few factors are worth considering: VDE certification and voltage rating. Any insulated hand tool sold into the electrical trade should be independently VDE tested, and it's worth knowing to what level. Draper's XP1000 range, for example, is tested to 10,000V and suitable for use

on AC circuits up to 1,000V and DC circuits up to 1,500V, with full compliance to EN60900 standards - the benchmark for insulated hand tools. These numbers matter to your customers, and staff who can explain them at the counter add real value over a purely price-led sale. Insulation wear indicators. One of the more overlooked but genuinely useful innovations in recent VDE tool development is dual-layer insulation that visibly signals damage. On the XP1000 screwdriver range, a dual-layer "insulation warning" blade sheath shows a contrasting colour the moment the outer layer is nicked or worn through - an immediate, unmissable cue that a tool needs replacing before it becomes a safety risk. It's a simple feature, but it's the kind of detail that could make a big difference. Tethered options for work at height. With more electricians working on scaffolding, MEWPs and rooftop installations, tethered hand tools have moved from a niche accessory to an expectation. Tethered pliers with a lanyard attachment point reduce the risk of dropped tools, which are a serious hazard on any site with people working below, while giving the electrician one less thing to worry about. It's worth stocking tethered variants alongside standard tools rather than treating them as an afterthought. Comfort and durability. TPE bi-material handles, anti-slip grips and induction-

30 SEPTEMBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

hardened jaws all affect how a tool performs across a working lifetime, not just out of the box. Electricians use these tools for hours at a time, so comfort isn't a niceto-have, it directly impacts fatigue and precision on the job. Materials and manufacture. Quality manufacturing processes and materials matter too – and can be a strong talking point in the sales process when it comes to hand tools. For example, hand tools like Draper’s XP1000 VDE Pliers are forged from premium German steel. The lifetime warranty question A lifetime warranty says more about a brand's confidence in its own manufacturing than any marketing line can. For wholesalers, stocking ranges with this level of backing gives staff an easy, honest answer when a customer asks, "will this actually last?". It’s an added reassurance you can give your customers to help them feel confident in their purchase. It's also worth considering how a range came to exist. Development involving genuine trade feedback tends to produce tools that solve the problems electricians actually have. When you're deciding which

030_PEW_SEPT26_Layout 1 14/08/2026 08:50 Page 31

TOOLS

manufacturers to back with shelf space and promotional support, that development process is a good indication of how well a brand will keep improving the range over time, and how seriously it takes trade feedback once tools are in the field. Thinking about the next generation The trade is changing, and wholesalers need to be thinking about who will be coming through the door in five years' time. Research commissioned by Draper Tools found that among young people considering a move into a trade, electrical work was named as one of the top choices. That's a meaningful pipeline of new electricians who will need to kit themselves out from scratch, often on a limited apprentice budget. This is where ranges like DXPulse, Draper's 12V cordless power tool range, come in. Designed to be light, compact and affordably priced without sacrificing performance, it's ideal for apprentices and early-career tradespeople who need capable tools without a huge upfront outlay.

Stocking quality, apprentice-friendly ranges alongside premium lines means you can serve a customer through their entire career, from apprenticeship to seasoned professional, building loyalty along the way. Beyond the tools: storage and security A well-stocked hand tool range doesn't operate in isolation. Increasingly, tool theft and van organisation are front of mind for tradespeople, and wholesalers who can offer a joined-up solution stand out. Research from Bunker, Draper's storage brand, found that many tradespeople see tool theft as a daily worry, with over a third calling it their single biggest concern at work. While messy, disorganised vans were also shown to cost the average tradesperson close to an hour a week hunting for tools. That's a clear commercial case for offering secure, well-designed storage alongside the tools themselves. The bottom line For electrical wholesalers, hand tools are

far from a low-consideration category. They're where safety, trust and brand loyalty can be built. Prioritising VDEcertified, feature-rich ranges with genuine warranty backing, and pairing them with smart storage solutions and options for newer entrants to the trade, is a straightforward way to build a hand tool offer that serves electricians at every stage of their career and keeps them coming back to your counter. SPECIAL REPORT

TRUE TO

TYPE Martin Plumbridge, Doepke Technical Manager, offers advice on understanding Type F RCCBs.

A

s electrical installations evolve, particularly with the rise of variable speed drives, inverter based appliances, and complex electronic loads the traditional Type AC and Type A RCCBs are no longer sufficient in all scenarios. This is where Type F RCCBs enter the picture.

Why Type F exists Today’s single phase appliances incorporating energy efficiency rely on complex electronics to control motor speed. These systems produce complex (composite) residual currents containing multiple frequency components resulting from the mains, inverter and motor. Type A RCDs are not designed to detect composite residual currents. Type F are designed for use in single phase inverter applications that do not require the complexity of Type B RCDs.

Detecting composite residual currents In addition to the requirements of EN 61008 or EN 61009 for Type A currents, Type F must also meet EN 62423: Composite residual current containing three frequency components, based on the rated residual operating current IΔn of the RCD and its rated frequency. Type F responds to: Pure AC residual currents, Pulsating DC residual currents, Mixed frequency residual current from 10Hz to 1kHz. Maximum Smooth DC components up to 10 mA

What is a Type F RCCB? Type F RCCBs are specifically designed to detect composite residual currents – see Regulation 531.3.3 (iii)(a) i.e. the behaviour of the RCD is defined, its tripping characteristic is not random, as may be the case with Type A RCDs subjected to different frequencies.

F are designed for “useType in single phase inverter applications that do not require the complexity of Type B RCDs.

”

36 SEPTEMBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

Where Type F RCCBs should be used Type F is recommended for circuits supplying: Washing machines with single phase inverter motors, small wall mounted Heat pumps and Air conditioning units. Tumble dryers, Dishwashers and LED lighting. Other common applications using single phase inverters, pumps, tools, battery charging. Mode 3 Charging of certain vehicles may require Type F.

SPECIAL REPORT

Modern day appliances under fault “conditions produce complex composite residual currents. This requires more sophisticated protection in the form of a type F RCCB to EN 61008 and EN 62423.

”

Operational leakage currents and residual currents associated with circuits containing non – linear loads i.e. current drawn is not proportional to the supply voltage, will consist of mixed frequency components creating a composite residual current - see Figure 1. Type F Detection Technology Manufactures use various detection systems. The Doepke Type F uses a sophisticated, patented electronics system, powered from the energy within the summation current transformer, generated by the residual current. Therefore, the residual current circuit-breaker works independent of supply voltage for the detection of Type A and Type F residual currents. Conclusion Modern day appliances under fault conditions produce complex composite residual currents. This requires more sophisticated protection in the form of a type F RCCB to EN 61008 and EN 62423. You should always check the equipment manufactures instructions, as some singlephase inverters require the use of Type B RCDs. This is due to the individual inverter design frequency characteristics and the level of smooth DC residual current produced under certain fault conditions.

Designed to operate as part of the Espire alarm system using ESP’s RF-Link wire-free technology, the new input module is powered by a sealed, non-replaceable 10-year lithium battery, providing long-term reliability while significantly simplifying installation. The wire-free design removes the need for mains wiring to the device, making it suitable for projects where cable installation is difficult, disruptive or cost prohibitive. This allows contractors and installers to complete installations quickly and efficiently, particularly in retrofit environments. The Espire Fire Alarm Input Module enables compatible third-party devices, including fire suppression systems such as sprinklers, to trigger connected Espire alarm sounders and deliver a clear audible warning throughout the property. This enhanced level of integration provides greater flexibility for specifiers and installers working across a wide range of domestic settings. Ideally suited for HMOs, social housing schemes and standard residential properties, the module offers a compact footprint that fits within a standard 1-gang back box, supplied as standard, enabling discreet installation.

KLEIN TOOLS RENEWABLES TOOL RANGE Klein Tools UK has announced the expansion of its Renewable Solutions range, a purpose-built collection of tools and equipment designed to support electricians and installers working across solar, battery storage and wider renewable energy installations. The expanded range was shaped directly by feedback gathered on-site. Sam Horseman, Head of Product at Klein Tools, attended a hands-on training session delivered by A121 Academy, one of the industry's most respected solar training providers. The insights gathered during the training directly informed the development of Klein Tools' expanded Renewable Solutions range, which brings together products from Klein Tools, Ergodyne and Super Rod. The range covers the full scope of a renewable installation along with the tools required for efficient operations on the roof, including MC4 connector tools, insulating wrenches, roofing hammers and pry bars, cable management and pulling solutions, data installation tools, and worker’s safety items designed for comfort and safety in variable weather conditions. As part of the expanded range, Klein Tools will shortly release the KTSTK19 Pro Solar Installation Tool Kit, a 19-piece kit developed to equip installers with everything required to complete a quality solar installation. The kit reflects the practical, onthe-job insights gathered through Klein Tools' engagement with A121 Academy and its installer network. TO FIND OUT MORE VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/WBQ014

KLIPBOARD STOCK AND ORDER PLATFORM Klipboard has announced the launch of its all-new AI-driven, cloud-based stock and order platform, ERP Go, developed to support small and medium sized businesses that buy, stock and sell products. Suitable for distribution businesses of different sizes, from individual operators and single-site businesses through to multi-branch organisations, ERP Go supports growing businesses as their day-to-day operations become more demanding. Across many stock-driven businesses, growth and changing operational demands often expose the limits of spreadsheets, manual processes or ageing systems. Information becomes harder to track, processes become harder to manage, and maintaining accuracy requires increasing effort from staff. Many of these organisations operate with lean teams where the owner or founder manages purchasing, sales and fulfilment directly. Klipboard’s latest platform has been designed to address these practical challenges, bringing stock, pricing, purchasing and quoting workflows into one connected cloud environment. ERP Go focuses on the activities businesses manage every day – managing stock availability, coordinating purchasing, sales, fulfilment and invoicing, and keeping orders moving efficiently. By connecting these workflows within a single system, businesses can reduce duplication, improve clarity and minimise the operational friction that arises when information is spread across multiple tools. ERP Go also integrates with widely used accounting platforms such as Xero, QuickBooks, Sage and Exact, allowing businesses to retain their existing finance systems while improving operational control. TOOL CASE Solar installations are an increasingly common part of an electrician's workload and working with MC4 and MC4 Evo 2 connectors requires the right tools. The new KNIPEX Tool Case for Photovoltaics brings together a purpose-selected set of professional tools in a single, wellorganised case, giving electricians everything they need to work confidently and correctly on solar connectors. At the heart of the kit is the crimp system pliers which has been specially modified for plug-type connectors used in PV installations and handles cables up to 10mm². The crimping pressure is precisely calibrated at the factory, removing any guesswork and ensuring consistent, reliable crimps every time. The case also includes cable shears capable of cutting copper cables up to 15mm in diameter, and the precision insulation stripper. The stripper comes with adapted blades specifically designed for the larger stripping capacities needed in PV work, covering 4.0, 6.0 and 10.0mm² cable cross-sections. Having the right stripping tool for the job avoids nicking conductor strands which is a common cause of problems when dealing with higher current applications.

Martindale Electric has complemented its quality trusted PAT tester line with two updated portable units, the EPAT1600 and EPAT2100. Both units are mains powered and offer high current bond test capability. The EPAT1600 is a simple one button, one test, manual PAT tester that’s made for Class I, Class II and power lead tests. There are three earth bond test currents, 25A, 8A and 200mA, which can be selected on a simple rocker switch, the 200mA test being specifically for computers and sensitive I.T. equipment. Additionally, the EPAT1600 has a built-in lead tester for checking extension leads, IEC leads and adaptors. It will perform a polarity test and is supplied with the Martindale EX332 230V lead test adaptor. The EPAT2100 also features a simple one button, one test interface for testing both 230V and 110V appliances. It seamlessly performs the mandatory tests on Class I and Class II appliances for earth bond and insulation, but has the added benefits of run current, run leakage and flash test. Earth bond tests can be carried out at 25A, 8A and 200mA for sensitive IT equipment. TO FIND OUT MORE VISIT: WWW.RDR.LINK/WBQ017

BG MODULAR SWITCH RANGE Easy, flexible and faster to install, the new BG GridLite is an innovative clip-in modular switching system that rethinks traditional modular wiring accessories. Combining a screwless, clip-in design with a unique yoke-free construction, GridLite is the first modular switch range of its kind from BG, enabling installers to build bespoke switch configurations quickly, replace individual modules with ease and adapt installations without changing the entire device. Designed in response to installer feedback, GridLite delivers a simpler, more versatile approach to modular switching whilst maintaining the premium quality, reliability and aesthetics synonymous with the BG brand. At the heart of GridLite is a screwless clip-in modular system that removes the need for fiddly fixing screws and allows modules to simply push into place. The innovative yoke-free design also means modules can be installed either way up, giving electricians greater flexibility on site - and speeding up installation. Installers can wire modules before fitting the faceplate, allowing the plate to be added at the final stage of the job. As well as making installation quicker and more efficient, this helps reduce the risk of damage during decorating or final fix. Engineered for today's lighting applications, GridLite's single-width modules are rated at 20A, while standard switch modules fit 16mm back boxes, helping to minimise rework on many installations. Unlike traditional modular switching systems, GridLite has been designed so that each module can be removed and replaced independently, without removing adjacent modules. Whether replacing a damaged switch, upgrading functionality or adapting an installation to changing customer requirements, installers can modify individual modules without replacing the complete device. Samantha Downie, Managing Director at Mates in Mind, highlights the importance of building positive mental health in and through work.

W

ith World Suicide Prevention Day (10th September) and World Mental Health Day (10th October) it is great to see the heightened awareness these dates bring. However, awareness is no longer enough. What matters now, more than ever, is that all employers take action to create a psychologically safe culture, every day of every year. That might sound like a lot of work, but trust me, having worked with hundreds of managers across higher-risk sectors, I know that once an organisation has a tailored action plan to follow, creating positive mental health in the workplace can become part of everyday operations.

Before I demonstrate how, it is important to note: ● ‘Preventing work-related stress isn’t just good for people – it’s the law’ (Health and Safety Executive (HSE)). ● ‘The HSE has demonstrated its intention to investigate potential breaches of its legislation, which can result in serious criminal and financial consequences. ● ‘Investing in workers’ wellbeing improves the organisation’s bottom line. This is because positive mental health in the workplace increases productivity; reduces absenteeism, presenteeism and staff turnover, and therefore recruitment and onboarding costs. It also demonstrates that you are a good, safe and supportive place to work. ● ‘Conversely, if left unaddressed, mental ill-health (for example, stress) can have a devastating impact on the individual, and can have life-changing repercussions for them, as well as their family, friends and colleagues. The recently published Mental Health in Construction Joint Code of Practice (JCOP) ‘identifies and addresses the

48 SEPTEMBER 2026 PROFESSIONAL ELECTRICIANS WHOLESALER

primary root causes impacting the mental health of our construction workforce’. The Code, and Mates in Mind, advocate for a proactive approach to workforce mental health. Analysis shows that employers that proactively invest in mental health support for their teams can make significant gains, with an average £5 return for every £1 spent on wellbeing support (Deloitte UK). So, what does all this mean for you? If you are responsible for workers, whether as a senior leader, line manager, HR professional, and/or a health and safety team member, please take a moment to ask yourself five key questions: ● Do we have a mental health policy? ● Are we conducting individual stress risk assessments? ● What action do we take as a result of those assessments? ● Do we mitigate psychosocial risks? ● Do we make reasonable work adjustments where necessary?

048_PEW_SEPT26_Layout 1 14/08/2026 10:25 Page 49

● Do we conduct the assessments on a regular basis? ● Where do we safely store this information/evidence?

Additional free resources and information can be found on our website: Supporting your team through suicide prevention and postvention (includes free resources to download): https://bit.ly/MinMblog25-8.

Put simply, do you satisfy your duty of care to your employees? If you answer ‘no’ then it’s time to take action: ● Get management buy-in. ● Assess where your organisation is on its mental health journey and develop a tailored action plan to fill any gaps, for example, in terms of provision, policies and that you are regularly conducting and acting on individual stress risk assessments. ● Set targets, monitor outcomes and record evidence. Know what success looks like in terms of the mental health of your workforce; plan in what and by when you will fill the gaps identified in your assessment; and keep records of the outcomes and evidence of actions you have taken. ● Educate your whole workforce so they have the skills, clarity and

confidence to spot the signs of mental ill-health, start conversations, signpost support and make reasonable work adjustments if needed. ● Provide support – be that through Mental Health First Aiders, HR Team, Occupational Health, an Employee Assistance Programme, peer mentors – and ensure the information is communicated regularly with staff. Speak to Mates in Mind to discover how we can work in partnership to achieve the above steps. Identifying and mitigating psychosocial risks in the workplace is a big topic and we have only just begun to scratch the surface in this Soapbox column.
