Pole position We all know that gas boilers are not only the main form of heating and hot water provision for UK homes, but also a mainstay of the heating and plumbing sector. Many installers and heating engineers have been fitting, servicing and repairing gas boilers for decades. But are the sands of time now beginning to run low on these industry stalwarts? Firstly, it is important to say that it is unlikely that we’ll see any dramatic movements towards different heating technologies in the immediate future. The gas boiler will be around for some years yet – but is the wind of change starting to blow? One indication is the fact that some of the major manufacturers already offer alternative heating solutions, such as solar thermal or heat pumps – and training courses and levels of support for these technologies are being expanded. Meanwhile, trials of new hydrogen boilers continue – such as the HyDeploy project based in Keele. And, a new report released from the NHBC Foundation looks at what a non-gas home of 2025 could look like. You can find more on this on page 8. As reported in the October issue of PHPI, Ideal Boilers have recently rebranded to Ideal Heating, with the promise of new product developments for the UK market – another indication of the direction of travel for the sector. We have a Q&A piece with the company on page 16 which delves a little deeper into some of the reasons behind the rebranding exercise. Plus, the low carbon agenda across wider society appears to be here to stay. A good example of this is the car industry, where manufacturers are increasingly promoting electric or hybrid options as the industry expands its alternatives to power derived from fossil fuels. And, despite the Covid-19 pandemic this year climate change and its impacts remain high on the news agenda. Government is also watching this space. Its Future Homes Standard says new-build homes from 2025 should not feature gas boilers, and it has recently introduced the Green Homes Grant to encourage the roll-out of energy efficiency measures and low carbon heating. Gaining more insight into the growing number of heating alternatives in the market could place a business in pole position to take advantage of a move towards low carbon heating solutions – whenever it occurs.

TRADES CAUTIOUSLY POSITIVE ABOUT OUTLOOK

TECHNOLOGY HELPS TRANSFORM HEATING BUSINESS Gas, heating and boiler engineering company Moorhouse Heating Limited (MHL) has transformed from a regional to national business with the help of a new mobile workforce management technology. The technology, from Leeds-based BigChange, enables MHL engineers to use a 5 in 1 mobile app called JobWatch that replaces all paperwork and synchronises in real-time with centralised management software. Originally servicing the local domestic market, the Gloucestershire company made a strategic move into the commercial sector recruiting gas and boiler experts as part of a nationwide wide network of sub-contractors. Since introducing BigChange two years ago MHL has doubled its turnover and tripled its field service engineering team. “Introducing BigChange was crucial to supporting our expansion into the commercial sector and nationally. We needed to transform the way we worked, eliminating paperwork and automating using the best-in-market digital platform something that would remove any barriers to expanding and winning new business,” said Tim Moorhouse, Managing Director of MHL.

Nearly half of UK tradespeople (46%) say their workload has increased since lockdown loosened in June 2020, according to new research by Direct Line. Those reporting an uptake in business have seen workloads rise by an average of 29%. Nearly six in ten (55%) say they’re feeling positive about their business and trade prospects and more than a quarter feel neutral (28%). Builders have been the busiest tradespeople since lockdown loosened, with nearly half (49%) reporting an upsurge in work. They were followed by plumbers (16%), electricians (13%) and carpenters (10%). Over half of tradespeople (52%) say that the uplift in business has been due to people attempting DIY jobs and repairs during the strictest lockdown months and making a hash of it.

BAXI APPOINTS NEW UK MANAGING DIRECTOR Baxi Heating has announced the appointment of Karen Boswell OBE as Managing Director of Baxi Heating UK and Ireland. Karen joins from Hitachi Rail and said: “Baxi Heating has some of the best known and respected brands in the market, and people who are passionate and successful in delivering for customers. It is well placed to build on its core solutions with new sustainable technologies. I look forward to leading the business through the exciting next phase of its story." Karen will replace David Pinder, who is retiring from Baxi Heating. David said: “I have very much enjoyed my time at Baxi Heating and there have been many highlights along the way, such as celebrating our 150th anniversary and developing the new hydrogen boiler.”

COVID-19 SUPPORT FROM THE RAINY DAY TRUST The Rainy Day Trust (RDT) is continuing in the drive to spread awareness of its support during the COVID-19 crisis with the launch of a leaflet designed to appeal to businesses potentially at the beginning of any restructuring process. The leaflet, ‘Help for your business to cope with the new normal’, urges companies to get in touch with the RDT at an early stage – as Bryan Clover CEO of the charity explains: “We’re worried that in some areas, furloughed staff will turn into redundant staff. That’s never an easy thing to deal with. But we can bring a fresh perspective to your plans and help individuals concerned or affected by any changes. If you, your company or anyone you know, is talking about a re-structure or job losses, please engage with us right from the start.” The charity has also announced a new phone number 0800 9154627.

BENCHMARK REFRESH FOR HEAT PUMPS The Heating and Hotwater Industry Council, HHIC, is delighted to announce that Heat Pump manufacturers across the UK have joined together to refresh the Heat Pump Benchmark commissioning checklist in line with latest legislation, which forms part of the warranty of the appliance. Stewart Clements, Director, HHIC said: “Benchmark is a nationally recognised scheme that places responsibilities on both manufacturers and installers to ensure best practice in installation, commissioning and servicing of domestic heating and hot water products in line with Building Regulations in England and Wales. This refresh comes at a time when we are seeing an increase in demand across the heat pump industry and also growth within our membership.”

RENEWABLES INSTALLERS CALL FOR GREEN HOMES GRANT EXTENSION A survey conducted by MCS, the national standards organisation for renewables, has revealed that almost half of their certified contractors believe that the Green Homes Grant should be extended to 18 months or more. The company asked over 800 of its members for their views on the government’s latest consumer incentive which was set-up to encourage the uptake of low-carbon renewable heating in homes. Nearly three-quarters of MCS certified contractors (73 per cent) had high levels of confidence in the scheme, saying that they plan to offer the Green Homes Grant to their customers, while 61 per cent of respondents said it will help with business recovery and enable them to grow. Currently, the Green Homes Grant is expected to run for six months from September 2020 to March 2021, with £2bn of grant support open to homeowners and local authorities during that period.

HOMEOWNERS DREAD WATER PROBLEMS According to a new survey by MyBuilder.com, 39% of Brits dread a problem with the water works, followed by heating 21% and electrics, 20%. The research also found that a third (33%) of homeowners wouldn’t know how to turn off their gas in the event of an accident. Carl Goulding from MyBuilder commented: “It’s vital that all homeowners and tenants know how to turn off their live services. You never know when you might have to – and not being able to act quickly in the event of an emergency can have devastating consequences.” The find-a-tradesperson service has published advice on what to do in an www.rdr.link/pu001 emergency on its website –

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS LOWER UP-FRONT COSTS OF GAS CENTRAL HEATING The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) recently published a report, prepared by Delta-ee, which provides a comparison of the full costs of installing different types of heating system. Andrew Newman, Technical Director of the Gas Users Organisation explained: “There is currently a debate about the best way to move to low carbon heating for our homes. This report usefully compares different technologies, but also recognises that it is a much lower cost option to swap an existing boiler with a like-for-like replacement, rather than a complete change of system. “This report shows that a like-for-like replacement of a combi boiler by a local installer can cost as little as £2250, while a new build gas central system including new radiators, putting in the gas supply line and controls would be £5400. “In contrast, an 8kW air source heat pump (ASHP) fully installed including fittings, buffer tank, cylinder and controls, but excluding the heat distribution system would cost £8,750. In reality, it would be necessary to fit new radiators, and a 16kW ASHP fully including a heat distribution system would cost £21550.”

BAXI’S CASHBACK SCHEME RETURNS To help installers pocket some extra money this year, Baxi’s cashback promotion is back –with a £300 bang. For every three Baxi 600 / 800 boiler installations registered on Baxi Works, installers can claim a £300 return. The scheme is running between 1st September and 30th November 2020. Both new and existing Baxi Works members can take advantage of the promotion. Dave Cook, Residential Sales Director – UK&I, at Baxi, said: “Each time we run a cashback promotion to say thank you and celebrate the success of our range, so many of our valued installers let us know how the promotion has helped them be able to treat themselves and their family. With £300 cashback for every three installations that translates to £600 for six boilers, £900 for nine boilers, £1,200 for 12 boilers and so on – the more you install, the more you get.” Qualifying boilers must be installed and registered on Baxi Works during the time period to be eligible. SPECIAL REPORT | Benchmark

BENCHMARK’S DIGITAL FUTURE A Billy Wilgar, Deputy Chair of the Benchmark Steering Group, looks at how Benchmark is being upgraded, and why going digital is a significant moment in domestic heating provision.

s we look towards the future of the heating industry, it’s clear that fundamental technological, environmental and economic factors will continue to impact the work of engineers. From long-term goals, such as the development of new appliances and meeting net-zero targets, to more immediate concerns in light of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s vital that the industry evolves to meet these unique demands and support those working on the front-line.

Going digital

Recognising that ways of working have changed since its introduction, the universal Benchmark code of practice has been revolutionised to make installations and services easier for engineers. With a backlog of routine maintenance accumulating following life in lockdown, and another busy winter ahead, there is an increasing need for engineers to complete jobs more efficiently and reduce the time spent filling in the paperwork. The Benchmark checklist was established to raise standards and promote best practice in the heating industry, and is an important stipulation in boiler manufacturer warranty. Although a vital part of installations and maintenance, heating engineers will be all too familiar with the time-consuming paperwork, as well as some of the challenges faced when information on the history of a boiler is missing or incomplete. In a bid to streamline the process, and encourage a whole-life approach to boiler care, Benchmark has gone digital. The new app, free to download on any tablet or phone, allows an engineer to register an appliance, complete the checklist, and save the information to a secure, consistent and easily accessible online hub.

The boiler passport One of the app’s defining features is its universal accessibility. Dubbed the ‘boiler passport’, the new Benchmark app holds all of the important details relating to a home’s heating system, allowing an engineer to have access to its complete history, even if they have never worked on the appliance before.

This also applies to aspects of a heating system that are critical to carrying out a service, such as details of the chemicals present, reducing the time spent on site searching for the necessary information. The app attributes each job to a specific engineer, which offers a way for competent engineers to promote best practice, while also ensuring those working in the industry are held accountable.

Changing consumer habits Not only is the Benchmark app set to transform the heating and plumbing sector, it also offers a chance to influence homeowners too. A consumer version of the app will be released in the coming months, giving homeowners an easier way to keep track of their boiler’s health, as well as sending push notifications when an annual service is due. There is scope for the app to play a significant role for home-movers, with prospective buyers able to review an accurate and up-to-date history of a property’s heating system before

the universal Benchmark code of practice has been revolutionised to make installations and services easier for engineers. purchasing, and therefore encouraging boiler checks to be an integral part of the house buying process.

Shape the future To celebrate the Benchmark app, a new campaign will be launched to highlight best practice. Users will be encouraged to share a job well done, by registering each installation on the app. Enhancing consumer trust, the ‘Make your Mark’ initiative will encourage engineers to take pride in their work, promote the Benchmark seal of approval and reduce the possibility of unqualified traders taking advantage of a high-demand market.

COMPANY: Carshalton Boilers

Carshalton Boilers

B

ased in South London, Carshalton Boilers is a family-run business that can trace its history back over 50 years. First launched in 1963, as Westroll Ltd, in 1990 it was purchased by Rodger Temple (John’s father) who renamed the company Carshalton Boiler Services Ltd. John entered the business in 2007 and introduced a range of service enhancements that are offered to this day. Together with his wife Carly, John has been running the business since 2014. Carshalton Boilers specialise in all aspects of plumbing and heating services, working with a wide range of commercial clients including schools, restaurants and offices providing plumbing and commercial heating services. Its engineers are also highly trained and fully competent in all domestic installations, plus there is an electrical team who provide a full range of electrical services for both private and commercial customers.

Lockdown measures When the Covid-19 pandemic initially struck the country John closed the main office (pictured) and set up office at home. In a story familiar to many, John and Carly continued to run all functions of the business, including collecting deliveries and arranging call outs, while simultaneously juggling home-schooling

With a history of over 50 years Carshalton Boilers has witnessed many changes, but how did this family-run business cope with the Covid-19 crisis, and how is it bouncing-back. PHPI spoke with joint business owner John Temple to find out. two young children. They took the difficult decision to reduce the business opening hours and furlough the majority of the team. John noted: “We just had a handful of engineers who carried on throughout lockdown ensuring that those with critical plumbing issues and the most vulnerable were prioritised and swiftly attended to. Many of our customers are elderly or were shielding and extremely anxious about letting a tradesman into the property. Our team reassured them that all government social distance guidelines would be adhered to, with engineers wearing all the required PPE and any interaction completely avoided. It was a very tough time, especially early on, when we also faced the additional challenge of securing PPE for our working engineers.” John welcomed the support the company received from the wider heating industry telling us: “The most vital help we received from suppliers was that they were able to remain open during lockdown, which enabled us to order and collect the parts we needed to carry out essential

works such as boiler repairs.” Carshalton Boilers’ efforts were recently recognised by their local Mayor, Cllr Trish Fivey, who visited the business and said: “We saw first-hand how professional and effective your response has been during the lockdown. We want to acknowledge the invaluable work that you and your staff have done during this pandemic. It has made us all aware of how much our way of life depends on all key workers. I wish to take this opportunity to thank you all.”

Busy winter John welcomes being back in the office noting: “During lockdown, we had turned the family home into a makeshift office and so as soon as it was safe to open up the office, we were very relieved to get back, clear away all the boiler spare parts and paperwork and reclaim our home.” To comply with government regulations, during the four months of lockdown the company had to cancel hundreds of non-essential jobs, so since fully re-opening it has been working through the backlog. John concluded: “There is also the regular work coming in that we would expect in the lead-up to winter so things are definitely very busy again. We have not noticed any dip in bookings which is obviously great to report.”

HEATING & RENEWABLES

FUTURE FOCUSSED

Ideal Heating is the new name of Ideal Boilers. PHPI caught up with Jo Shepherd, Chief Marketing Officer at Ideal Heating, to discover the reasons behind the move, and if the change will result in the launch of any new heating solutions.

Q

Q

Ideal Boilers was a very well recognised brand within the heating sector, why do you think now is the right moment to evolve it to Ideal Heating?

The company has a broad portfolio of boilers for the domestic market. Will this move see any reduction in your domestic boilers range?

For years, we’ve offered so much more than just boilers for the domestic market. People sometimes forget that we also offer cylinders, smart controls and are the UK’s market leader of high efficiency commercial heating solutions. With this in mind, and with achieving net zero more a priority than ever, now is the right time for us to evolve. We’ve designed our new brand in such a way that anyone who was familiar with Ideal Boilers will easily recognise Ideal Heating, but now we can better communicate the completeness of our range, while paving the way for future innovation. Our ambition is to be the number one choice for installers, consumers and businesses when selecting a heating and hot water system. We believe that having a more holistic, future-focussed brand will help us achieve that.

In 2019, one in every four new domestic boilers installed across the country bore the Ideal name. Our range is known and loved by installers and consumers alike for its quality, reliability and value, and for as long as the demand is out there, we’ll be here to meet it. Of course, the direction of travel towards sustainable alternatives is clear – but we’re talking about a transition, not an overnight change. The development of sustainable heating technologies will continue alongside innovation and sales in the gas-powered central heating market – for us, both are important, and neither comes at the expense of the other.

16 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Q

As part of the brand re-positioning will the company now focus more on low carbon technologies and, if so, what new launches can we expect?

016_PHPI_NOVDEC20_Layout 1 24/09/2020 13:16 Page 17

Ideal Heating’s new ‘expert academy’ We’re wholeheartedly committed to a more sustainable future, which is reflected in the design of our new logo We’re wholeheartedly committed to a more sustainable future, which is reflected in the design of our new logo; there’s a green dot on the ‘i’ for Ideal to symbolise our dedication to a greener future, in place of the previous red one. Alongside the rebrand, we’ve created an Environmental Division within the business to oversee a programme of investment into research, product development and stakeholder engagement, to support the decarbonisation of domestic and commercial heating. And we plan to launch our first low carbon product early next year. The UK’s transition towards a net zero future will be a gradual one, which means we must also ensure the continued optimisation of existing technologies, before alternatives become widely available. With this in mind, we’ve recently launched our new Halo range of wireless programmable room thermostats, including a connected version which give users the option to cleverly and efficiently control their heating on-the-go – and to avoid heating an empty home.

Q

Ideal’s parent company is a leader in heat pumps in the French market. Can we expect to see Heat Pumps becoming part of your offer to UK installers? As part of the government’s commitment to ‘build back better’ from the coronavirus outbreak, we’ve seen the announcement of the Green Homes Grant – under which the government will help homeowners with the cost of installing heat pumps (among other solutions) in an effort to reduce carbon emissions.

We are fully supportive of this, and are uniquely placed to draw on the heating expertise from across our parent company, to help make low carbon heating a reality in the UK. We are working closely with our international colleagues to learn from their experience and combine it with our specific knowledge of this market – and heat pumps will have a role to play.

Q

How will you be helping installers acquire any new skills needed to offer their customers the latest heating technologies? We remain committed to our loyal installers and to future-proofing their businesses as we adapt and diversify our own. That’s why we’ve invested in a new training platform – the Expert Academy – to help them provide the highest standards of service when working with a wide range of heating technologies. Since launching in September 2020, the immediate focus for the Expert Academy is on upskilling installers to work with the existing domestic and commercial product ranges from Ideal Heating. Over time, we will extend this to cover our sister brands – Keston by Ideal Heating, Gledhill, Hamworthy Heating and ACV – and as we add new, sustainable products to our range, they will be covered as well. We’re extremely proud of the Expert Academy. We have a wealth of knowledge and experience in our business, and we’re lending it to our installer partners free of charge, as ultimately, we each depend on the other to succeed.

Ideal Heating has launched a new training platform, called Expert Academy. Courses and content will cover all the skills and knowledge needed to work with the company’s domestic and commercial product ranges. It will be rolled out across its sister brands; Keston by Ideal Heating, Hamworthy Heating and ACV, later this year. The Expert Academy on-demand service offers a range of interactive e-learning modules and assessments for installers to complete at their convenience, supported by handy video content, tips and guides – all of which is mobile-friendly to help with troubleshooting on the job. The virtual classroom option is also free to use; installers will be taught by a live trainer, again supported by a range of multimedia content to bring the sessions to life. Tony Rossetti, Head of Technical Training at Ideal Heating, commented: “We’re extremely proud of the Expert Academy and truly believe it’s the best installer learning and training platform out there. We’ve invested in the very latest technology to ensure that all of our live, virtual courses are as engaging as possible – and we’re looking forward to getting back to the classroom in-person at some point next year.” To register for a free account and book onto a course www.rdr.link/pu011

HEATING & RENEWABLES

Karl Bateman, National Specifier Manager at Calor, looks at some ways to save time, focus efforts and streamline processes so that you can operate your business more efficiently and profitably.

SMARTER WORKING T

ime is precious, and for those who spend a significant amount of time on the road travelling to customers’ properties, which is often the case in rural areas, it can seem like there’s no easy way around this issue. But with the right online tools and technology, you can reduce the need to travel to deliver your services to customers, and save time on some of the most important ‘back office’ tasks so that you can work in a more productive and profitable way.

■ Filtering leads Most installers will know that customer enquiries can range from simple repairs and servicing to full system installation. Providing quotations can take a big chunk of time, especially if part of the process requires visiting a customer’s property to check out the requirements. What’s more, not all leads result in a successful sale, and the time and cost spent on lost leads cannot be recouped. The good news is that there are now a number of communication tools that enable installers to survey a job and provide quotes remotely by reviewing images sent by homeowners, such as WhatsApp or Zoom. This way, no travelling is needed, and customers can get a good idea of the price before proceeding any further. If you find out that a customer wants to switch to LPG in the process, you can refer them to Calor early in the process to help them get their supply set up, and earn yourself £250 when they receive their first fill of gas for their bulk tank. Apart from

saving travel time, one of the other advantages is that better-quality leads can be identified earlier in the process. This means you can concentrate on pursuing leads for jobs you want to win.

■ Remote service Remote working not only saves office workers the need to commute; installers too can take advantage of connected functionalities offered by many heating and plumbing products, including boilers and magnetic filters, to reduce travel time. They can monitor the status of their customers’

equipment, diagnose problems with customers’ systems, or troubleshoot simple issues, from anywhere they choose. Apart from removing the need to visit a customer’s property to carry out these tasks, the valuable information given via the associated apps enables installers to organise the resources needed beforehand – such as parts – should a site visit become necessary. This means jobs can be completed in one visit, saving time and cost for both the installer and customer. What’s more, many of these functionalities open up opportunities for installers to provide remote services to generate new revenue streams.

■ Streamline customer

communication

Whilst it’s possible to reach a larger number of residents using door-to-door leafleting in a built-up area, this method of promoting your business is less time efficient in rural areas. Using direct mail, emails or texts offers a way to communicate with potential customers from the comfort of your own home, and allows you to track your rates of success. But to do this, you will need a database with more sophisticated functions than a basic spreadsheet. This is where it’s worth considering the use of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools to make the whole end-to-end process easier and slicker. Not only do they act as a database, but they can also automate mundane data-entry tasks like creating contacts from signup forms completed on your website, and scheduling follow-ups to help you organise the next steps that need to be taken – arranging a member of your team to visit a

there are now a number of communication tools that enable installers to survey a job and provide quotes remotely property or draw up a quotation for example. Not only can you reduce the amount of time you have to spend inputting information from different sources and tracking activities related to your customers, but you can also gain valuable insights for future planning such as servicing jobs for existing customers in the pipeline. There are a number of CRM software packages suitable for small businesses, some of which offer free versions.

■ Reliable supplier Bearing in mind that gas is needed to test and commission a new LPG boiler, working with, and encouraging customers to sign up with a reliable supplier such as Calor,

will help to avoid delays and repeated visits to get appliances up and running. We work with customers to decide on a suitable location for the storage tank, and carry out its installation. Appliances can be installed once this is complete, and when they are ready to be commissioned, Calor will make the first LPG delivery to the property. Although time is money, saving time is not necessarily just about reducing costs. By using the latest solutions offered by reputable manufacturers and service providers, installers can work smarter, not harder, to maximise their returns from time invested into running their businesses. SMART THINKING

PHPI learns how the latest smart controls drew one installer to select Ariston for use in a wide-range of properties in Scotland.

O

ver 300 Ariston ONE Series boilers complete with Ariston Net smart controls have been installed throughout a wide range of domestic properties in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas by Contract Heating Ltd. The installations were part of a series of gas central heating system upgrades in rented and privately-owned homes that took place throughout a 12-month period. The two companies have a longstanding working relationship, with Contract Heating Ltd having operated as Ariston service agents in the Edinburgh area for almost 20 years. In 2018, having operated as agents for several different boiler manufacturers, Patrick Hannigan, Director, Contract Heating Ltd, took the decision to work solely with Ariston. One of the reasons behind Patrick’s company opting to exclusively fit Ariston products was the Ariston Net smart control and monitoring system. Patrick explained: “Our company has always had a good relationship with Ariston. When we first found out about Ariston Net two years ago, we were extremely impressed with its capabilities. Being able to monitor boilers remotely via the Ariston Net portal definitely improves the service we are able to offer our clients. One of the best features of the system is its ability to give early warning of any potential problems before the customer is even aware of them.”

One of the best features of the system is its ability to give early warning of any potential problems before the customer is even aware of them.

Ariston Net Making connections Contract Heating Ltd now offers connection to Ariston Net with either GPRS (typically in rented properties) or Wi-Fi connectivity (more commonly in privately owned homes), with each property type accounting for around 50% of the company’s business. Commenting on these different connections, Patrick continued: “The GPRS box connects to the internet via a Sim card (mobile phone network). This is ideal for rented accommodation, as we find with Wi-Fi, new tenants tend to change their contract provider, so lose connection to the internet – which would mean having to reconnect on every change of tenancy.” The sim card is provided by Ariston and comes free of charge with the GPRS unit. No monthly fees are charged on this. Patrick added: “Details of the features and benefits of the Ariston Net are now included on all our estimates, while we have also added a dedicated section about it to our website. Indeed, since we began offering the system as part of our service,

Ariston Net has the ability to monitor and control boilers remotely, enabling installers to offer the best possible levels of support. the conversion rate for estimates has increased from around 40% to 70%, which is a fantastic return on investment.” He continued: “The most common issue reported is low pressure, usually in rented properties where tenants often don’t know how to fill the system. Whenever this occurs, we are now able to send a sheet of instructions to the tenant without having to attend on site – which saves us time and means there is no call-out charge for the customer.” Patrick concluded: “The combination of the 12-year warranty option and remote monitoring now means that clients only have the cost of an annual service visit – without the expense of a Service Contract.” For more details about Ariston and its range of boilers www.rdr.link/pu013

STAYING SAFE IN CUSTOMERS’ HOMES To ensure you are protecting yourself and customers from Covid-related risks, as well as other potential workplace hazards, it is essential to remember the importance of adequate PPE. Chris Riley, National Operations Manager at Baxi, outlines crucial PPE for working in customers’ homes. Protecting your body

F

ollowing the outbreak of Covid-19, the way we work has changed dramatically, not least for those working in the plumbing and heating sector. Health and safety is of the utmost importance at Baxi, so it is essential that risks are kept to a minimum. On site, plumbing and heating professionals know exactly what PPE to use, however this can be more difficult to discern in a home environment. The following guidelines allow installers to maintain a safe and secure working environment at all times.

From the top In terms of facial PPE, masks are now more important than ever for a multitude of reasons. The most obvious of these is the increased protection it gives from the transmission of Covid-19. Wearing a mask at all times in a customer’s home will help protect you from catching, or spreading the virus. It will also prevent you from inhaling dust and debris, which over time can lead to respiratory issues. Just make sure to not reuse disposable masks and if possible, buy a reusable one which should be washed between uses. In additional to wearing a mask, protecting your head from concussion – or worse yet severe brain injury – is absolutely vital. While hard hats protect from risk of falling objects, bump caps are perfect for use in customers’ homes, where you could hit your head against low shelves, pipework underneath sinks, or beams in the attic.

When working on the floor, knee pads and kneeling mats can help protect your joints and prevent future ligament damage The same goes for your eyes. If they are not protected from debris or hazardous substances, you could risk serious eye injury or even blindness. By using appropriate safety glasses, you can ensure your eyes are protected from dust chips or flying particles. Safety glasses with complete all-round protection should be used when working with chemicals such as inhibitors to prevent any harmful substances reaching your eyes.

When leaving your van to enter a customer’s home, it’s essential to wear a high-vis jacket to make sure you are visible to other road users, particularly in heavy traffic areas. Many tradespeople forget this, which can result in accidents when exiting a vehicle or unloading or loading tools. During a job, using protective gloves is the best way to avoid cuts, scrapes, punctures, chemical erosion or heat burns on hands. Though most tradespeople understand the importance of gloves, some choose not to wear them as they can limit movement. A good pair of safety gloves will be made with dexterity in mind, so it’s important to try on a few different designs and sizes to find the right fit. Safety gloves also have a cut protection level rating, with one being the lowest protection provided and five the highest. Level five gloves are recommended for plumbing and heating engineers to ensure maximum protection. For heavy lifting jobs such as moving an appliance or heat exchanger, rigger gloves provide the best protection. Arms also require protection, especially when reaching into boiler systems or hard to access spaces to reach pipes, so remember armlets can be worn in conjunction with gloves. If contact with system water, chemicals or contaminated surfaces is involved in a job, nitrile gloves can also be worn over safety gloves to stop them becoming wet or contaminated. On top of this, nitrile

022_PHPI_NOVDEC20_Layout 1 24/09/2020 13:19 Page 23

gloves can offer bacterial and viral protection when working in a customer’s home – just remember to wash your hands before, after and at regular intervals throughout the job.

Waist-down protection It is common for knee problems to affect tradespeople, especially those who have worked for many years, so investing in preventative PPE measures now to keep yourself healthy is advised. PPE can also help to prevent any existing knee issues becoming worse over time. When working on the floor, knee pads and kneeling mats can help protect your joints and prevent future ligament damage, often caused by repetitive bending and muscle strain. Safety shoes with steel reinforced toe caps and puncture resistant soles are vital PPE for preventing foot injuries from heavy falling objects and hazards like hidden nails. Often customers prefer shoes to be removed in their homes so always have

non-slip overshoe protection covers available, so if you are asked to remove footwear, you can keep them on and protect the carpets at the same time.

Don’t risk it Health and safety while working in customers’ homes is more important than ever and, while PPE can protect you from a multitude of hazards and injuries, it is important to keep identifying risks

throughout a job. This includes before the job takes place. We recommend speaking to customers over the phone before agreeing to do a job to determine if they, or any of the other occupants at the property, have shown any symptoms of Covid-19, are self-isolating or are classed vulnerable. If the occupants are healthy and you are completely comfortable, then you can carry out the work with correct PPE and Covid-safe measures in place. Baxi has specific guidance for installers on approaching work in a customer’s home during Covid-19. If you feel like you are taking a risk or putting yourself in any danger, you shouldn’t agree to do a job; however, following guidelines and using correct PPE will help to minimise risk and ensure the safety of you and your customer while you work. HEATING & RENEWABLES

DOWN ON THE PHPI follows the renovation of a farmhouse on its journey to be carbon neutral.

I

n 2019, following years of minimal maintenance, a 300-year-old Yorkshire farmhouse was purchased by new owners who started a major renovation project to extend the property and make it more energy efficient. During the renovation, the ground floor has been completely re-built and a new roof has been installed, elements of the renovation which enabled the insulation of the property to be significantly improved, helping to reduce heat loss. An environmentally friendly ethos was at the centre of the project so selecting a renewable heating system was an easy decision. “Throughout the renovation, we were keen to make the building as energy efficient as possible,” commented the homeowner. “Installing an air source heat pump was the natural choice to replace the oil heating system that previously heated the property. We have been advocates of reducing our carbon footprints for many years and, through my work, I have learnt a lot about renewables from Grant UK so when we started this project, I was keen to put the theory into practice.”

Efficient system The farmhouse now extends over 250m² between two floors and the heat source of the property is a Grant Aerona³ 17kW R32 air source heat pump. Grant heat pumps use R32 refrigerant which has a global warming potential which is 70% lower than other refrigerants such as R410a. Furthermore, as it is a single-component refrigerant, R32 gas has no temperature glide which helps the heat pump operate more efficiently.

24 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

This feature of the Aerona³ heat pump was one of the reasons why it was selected for this install as the homeowners were confident that the heat pump would work as efficiently as possible while modulating the output to meet their heating demands. Working alongside the heat pump is a Grant MonoWave high performance 400ltr indirect hot water cylinder. With a larger internal coil, the cylinder can effectively transfer heat from the system into the water ready to supply and meet the hot water requirements of the property. The homeowners decided to install the largest cylinder model so they can store the water very efficiently by having a low storage temperature.

024_PHPI_NOVDEC20_Layout 1 24/09/2020 13:21 Page 25

Installing an air source heat pump was the natural choice to replace the oil heating system that previously heated the property. Under the floor Grant Uflex underfloor heating has been installed throughout the property. This wet underfloor heating system, which is embedded into the floor construction, comprises of 16mm pipe which has been laid in a mixture of pipework patterns – bifular and meander – to provide even heat distribution into the occupied living space of the farmhouse on both levels. The Uflex system components all came as a kit which made things easy. After the Uflex pipework was laid, stapled and secured into place, a Topflow AFD fast

drying screed was poured over the top with approximately 13m³ laid in less than three hours. The particular screed used for this installation was incredibly fast drying and could be walked on the following day, allowing tradespeople to continue with other elements of the renovation project and it was fully dry after only two and half weeks, allowing the flooring to be laid.

Comprehensive support Throughout the installation, Grant UK’s Design and Specification Team were on hand to provide heat loss calculations,

comprehensive product specification, and full line drawings for the underfloor heating system. The fabric of the property has been upgraded to be as energy efficient as possible, and its heating and hot water requirements are being met sustainably with renewables – it also has a solar PV system which will complement the heat pump’s electricity demands to further reduce the owners’ heating and hot water bills. WATER TREATMENT

TEST PRACTICE

Richard Crisp, Head of Chemistry at Fernox explains why laboratory testing plays such an important role in central heating system maintenance, and highlights the common issues with problem systems and how to remedy them.

R

egular testing of system water should be standard practice for professional installers. The revisions made to BS 7593:2019 place greater emphasis on the importance of system testing and the standard now recommends either re-dosing with inhibitor or conducting a full laboratory analysis of the system water (and re-dosing with inhibitor if required) every five years. However, it has historically been difficult to keep track of samples, especially when working across multiple projects at any given time. To make the laboratory testing process simple, leading manufacturers offer handy kits that can be used to collect a system water sample and send it to a laboratory for testing. With Fernox, for example, installers can receive a pass or fail result to their mobile (usually within 24 hours of receipt of the sample) via a dedicated, easy-to-use app, as well as a full diagnostic report online or via email, outlining any issues identified and recommendations for how to remedy them quickly.

If a sample does flag a specific issue it is important to get to work quickly to fix it and ensure that no further damage ensues.

Dissolved iron When steel (which is often used to manufacture system components such as radiators) within the central heating system corrodes, it can lead to the water becoming contaminated with dissolved iron. When this happens, the dissolved particles can oxidise, forming iron oxides which can contribute to debris and sludge. This can cause the system to become sluggish due to blockages in the pipework – and in a worst-case scenario result in component and system failure. If dissolved iron is present, the system should be cleaned and flushed with a system cleaner like Fernox Cleaner F3 that works to lift and remove contaminants. For heavily contaminated systems Fernox Power Cleaner F8, a pH neutral citric acid-based cleaner, suited to tackle the dirtiest systems, should be used. For the best results, both of these cleaners should be left to circulate for up to seven days (or a minimum of one hour) before flushing, until the water runs clear and the cleaner has been removed. In some cases, chemical analysis of the water will show that the system water contains cleaner residues as well as dissolved iron. In this case, there is already cleaner in the system, and so flushing should be performed with mains water only. Once complete, re-fill the system and dose with a high-quality inhibitor like Fernox Protector F1 or, if there is an inline system filter installed, with Protector+ Filter Fluid to stop future corrosion and scale formation.

30 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

If a sample does flag a specific issue it is important to get to work quickly to fix it and ensure that no further damage ensues. Hardness deposition percentage To determine how much limescale is present within the system, lab technicians will often look for the percentage of hardness deposition. Limescale results in inefficient heat transfer, blockages and creates increased boiler noise. When limescale forms in a heat exchanger, it creates an uneven surface with crevices. Due to the high surface tension of water, water cannot enter these crevices and instead, steam and air bubbles form in the gaps. When the bubbles pop or travel throughout the system, they create noise. If a lab test identifies limescale as an issue, the system should be descaled by dosing with an acidic cleaner like Fernox DS40 Descaler and Cleaner. It is important to neutralise this type of treatment before disposal to a foul drain to comply with waste regulations, so Fernox provides neutraliser with the product. After cleaning and once the system has been flushed, drained and re-filled an inhibitor should be added for long-term protection against limescale build-up. For more information www.rdr.link/pu028

WATER TREATMENT

THE HUB OF THE MATTER I

n a recent consumer survey, Spirotech discovered that over 90% of homeowners expect to spend more time at home this winter, as a result of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, with working from home still on the cards for many people. Consequently 60% of the respondents revealed their concerns regarding the reliability of their current heating system and whether they might possibly encounter any untimely breakdowns during the colder months. With this in mind, the results found that an encouraging 70% of homeowners were open to investing in new products that would protect their boiler and the overall health of their heating system. This figure shows the opportunity that heating engineers currently have to recommend units such as the SpiroVent RV2 deaerator and SpiroTrap MB3 dirt separator during the quotation process that will help to improve the reliability and efficiency of domestic systems. Whilst the research suggests homeowners are open to investing in system protection measures, Spirotech recognises that heating engineers often have to work hard to convince customers of the benefits of dirt separation and particularly deaeration, which remains less well known.

Area Sales Manager for Spirotech UK, Dave Goodyer, discusses how installers can use Spirotech’s Better Heating hub to explain the importance of installing deaerators and dirt separation units to homeowners.

Whilst dirt removal is now more common place in boiler installations thanks to increased awareness and stipulations from boiler manufacturers that they must be installed to obtain extended guarantees, awareness about the importance of air removal is lacking, often leaving homeowners questioning why the extra cost of a deaerator is required.

70%

The percentage of homeowners who were open to investing in new products that would protect their boiler and the overall health of their heating system.

Trapped air Trapped air left in heating systems can contribute towards a whole host of annoyances, from radiator cold spots and noisy pipework, to the need to frequently bleed radiators and higher than expected energy bills. More worryingly, trapped air in the form of microbubbles will lead to the formation and build up of magnetite, which can often cause boiler breakdowns. Installing a deaerator, in conjunction with a dirt separator, will remedy and help prevent these system problems from

reoccurring throughout the winter months. So, whilst encouraging the customer to make the initial investment upfront can sometimes be a challenge, explaining what they can potentially save on repairs and energy use further down the line can help them to see the long-term benefits.

Better heating To help installers overcome these hurdles, Spirotech developed Better Heating; a toolkit that helps heating engineers to educate homeowners on the dangers of leaving air and dirt untreated in a heating system. Created in line with installer feedback, the toolkit includes a consumer-friendly website, animated videos and downloadable leaflets. The Better Heating website includes an easy to use symptom checker, which helps identify signs of trapped air and dirt within the home. Additionally, homeowners can learn more about how air and dirt may have entered their system and the

Animated videos Customers can also view a series of short videos that explain how air and dirt form in a heating system and the benefits or deaeration and dirt separation. The animated videos are a great way to demonstrate the trapped air in the form of microbubbles within a system, as whilst an

installer can easily take a sample of system water to show the homeowner how contaminated their system is with magnetite, it is much more difficult to show the presence of air. In addition, Spirotech has also made informative leaflets available to installers in digital or printed form that can be left behind or sent to the homeowner during the quotation process. With more people set to spend more time at home this winter, it is essential that systems are cleaner, more efficient and less likely to break down. By utilising the Better Heating resources available to them and helping to educate homeowners on the crucial role that deaerator and dirt separation will play in maintaining system health, installers can help homeowners enjoy healthier heating this winter. PLUMBING & BATHROOMS

CREATE ‘THE LOOK’

Clean, sleek and modern bathrooms are becoming more commonplace in new builds and home renovations. Nigel Sanger, Divisional Director Technical Support, discusses how selecting the right pipes, valves and fittings can help achieve ‘the look’ that homeowners and developers want, while simplifying the installation. ontemporary bathroom designs have become a staple in all new build and renovation projects. Homeowners by default don’t expect to see exposed pipework anywhere in a house, especially as there is an ever-growing focus on aesthetics and interior design. All these expectations pose a challenge for installers who are supposed to achieve the desired look, while concealing pipework and plumbing fittings in these tight spaces. However, selecting the right plumbing products can simplify these jobs, leading to neater finishes and faster installations.

Choose the right TMV Space comes at a premium in most bathroom installations, be it new builds or renovations. This makes squeezing in the plumbing essentials even harder. This is especially the case with Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs) that became a legal requirement for all domestic new builds in 2010.

exposed pipework is often a no-no, especially when the emphasis is on aesthetics and minimalistic design.

TMVs offer protection against scalding, while enabling the hot water system to maintain disinfection temperature of above 60°C to restrict Legionella growth. Considering the seriousness of risks around the usage of hot water in households, it is best practice to install them while carrying out retrofit projects as well. However, most TMVs available in the market are targeted at commercial applications and are quite bulky in size. Fitting these valves in tight spaces such as underneath the bath, presents a major challenge. This is where installers need small, compact TMVs, such as the Easifit TMV from Reliance Valves. Being the smallest TMV in the market, it can be fitted in much tighter spaces, and its flat faced union connection makes the installation and future maintenance a lot easier and faster. The Easifit TMV is also designed to run at exceptionally low flow rates, helping homeowners conserve water.

PLUMBING & BATHROOMS

Opt for flexible pipes

Flexi hoses

In most modern bathrooms, exposed pipework is often a no-no, especially when the emphasis is on aesthetics and minimalistic design. This means all pipes connecting to the bath, shower and basin need to be hidden behind walls, under the floor or beneath freestanding fixtures. Traditional bathrooms with exposed pipework would usually have soldered copper pipes. But the rigidity of these materials makes it much harder and time consuming to hide them behind walls and fixtures. To get around this, flexible polybutylene pipes such as JG Layflat pipe can be used to cable through joists, behind walls or fixtures. Available in coils of varying lengths, the JG Layflat pipe can bend and flex around tight spaces, making it ideal for out-of-sight installations and removes the need for joints.

Hiding pipework in vanity units or behind pedestals can be a bit of a nightmare, particularly if you are using rigid pipework, which can take a lot of effort and time to install. In fact, installers often find that second fix installations are even trickier. Making the final connections from the first fix pipework to the outlets is often done blind and in awkward spots where it is difficult to manoeuver tools. This is where flexi hoses, such as those in the JG Speedfit range, can help. Made from braided metal or white PVC, they’re flexible and can bend around any existing pipework or obstacles, without compromising the connection. The seal is created with one easy push, and on average, using a flexi hose can save you up to 40% on installation time. Another benefit of using flexi hoses from JG Speedfit is that

The Easifit TMV is also designed to run at exceptionally low flow rates, helping homeowners conserve water.

they are available with built-in service valves. This removes the need to install an additional valve for water isolation to carry out future repairs and maintenance work.

Push-fit your way to luxury While many are choosing to hide their pipes, there is still some appetite for exposed pipework as a design feature in luxury bathroom projects. Shiny copper pipework and brass fittings particularly can be paired with deep blacks and brilliant whites to give a striking feel to contemporary bathrooms. Achieving this look can be made easier with SharkBite’s slimline brass push-fit fittings, that are easy to install in awkward spaces without the need for tools, flux and solder. SharkBite is also a godsend for replacing aged, rusty fittings in old bathrooms and eliminating the risk of pipes leaking due to aging soldered joints. These push-fit connectors are easy to install and demount and can be used with all sorts of plastic, copper and carbon steel pipes.

Work Smarter, Not Harder For bathroom projects, the crucial point for installers to remember is to work smarter, not harder. Compact spaces can make installations complicated and slow down completion times. Delivering a contemporary bathroom finish is easier when you work with a smarter selection of products, such as push-fit pipes, valves and fittings. Whether it’s a minimalistic aesthetic, or exposed pipework is a deliberate design feature, solutions from RWC’s family of brands can make the job quick and hassle free. TROUBLE SHOOTING // SHOWERS

Paul Rowley, Approvals and Training Manager at Triton, explains how to solve a couple of commonly asked questions about the company’s products – switching to product mode and solving temperature issues.

Q

Digital Mixer Shower: How do I change a Triton HOST controller from display to product mode?

The Triton Host is digital, so the control and mixer box are separate to the unit itself. It’s not unusual for Triton to receive a call from a customer who has accidentally switched their controller to display mode. This setting is often used in a bathroom showroom environment for demonstration purposes, when no water supply is connected. Here’s how to resolve this:

STEP ONE I Turn the unit on. In normal mode this would cause water to come out of the spray head. However, in display mode the word display can be seen

flashing at the top of the screen. While it’s possible to adjust the temperature using the normal functions, no water will flow. Therefore, the software needs to be changed back to product mode.

STEP TWO I To achieve this, hold the on button and the flow down button together for a few seconds until the option of product or display is shown. Select the single circle for product mode. Then turn the power off for a few seconds to allow it to reset before turning it back on. If the unit doesn’t enter commissioning mode then turn the power off to the unit for 30 seconds to allow it to reset before turning it back on.

water should now be at maximum flow. It’s then possible to adjust the flow and temperature using the controls. When adjusting the temperature, the reading will flash on the screen until it has reached the desired level.

Q

My customer has complained that the water from their electric shower is not hot enough? What might be causing this?

STEP THREE I The settings will have now gone back into commissioning mode. As the screen instructs, press the on button until water is flowing. This won’t be at full capacity just yet, so don’t be alarmed. Then press the double circle button for five seconds, which will cause the screen to clear and the water will stop.

STEP FOUR I Press the on button and the

38 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

Users struggling to get their shower to a temperature they feel comfortable with is a common issue. This could be a result of the commissioning procedure not being followed correctly, which leads to the temperature knob being misaligned with the valve behind it.

038_PHPI_NOVDEC20_Layout 1 24/09/2020 14:08 Page 39

STEP ONE I To rectify this, turn the power on and press start. When water begins to flow from the shower, it should automatically go to the highest heat setting. The temperature control has finite movement, so if it’s turned fully clockwise it should be at its highest temperature. STEP TWO I Isolate the electricity supply, remove the cover screws and lift off the cover. This will move the temperature dial away from the valve behind it. Then turn the dial anti-clockwise and re-fit it with the valve so that the two are well connected.

STEP THREE I Now turn the dial as clockwise as it will go, which will re-position the valve. Then lift it back off, turning it so it’s also in the fully clockwise position as it may not have completed the full range of movement while attached to the valve. Next re-engage the two components, now that they are in the correct positions, by fitting the cover back on and inserting the screw back at the base. STEP FOUR I Apply power and turn the shower back on, twisting the dial fully clockwise to the highest temperature. It will take about 20 seconds for the water to reach the maximum heat level. The temperature reading from the repaired shower should show around 41 to 42 degrees. With many installers unable to attend manufacturer-led training courses due to social distancing measures, Triton Showers has produced a series of informative videos designed to provide technical support during uncertain times. TRAPS

David Clayson, International Product Manager at Wavin’s Osma brand, gives some helpful advice on how waterless traps can do their part to help keep buildings safe to use.

W

hen the UK entered lockdown, spaces such as holiday homes, commercial properties and offices were understandably left for long periods of time, which also led to regular maintenance taking a backseat. Now, as we begin adapting to a new normal, it’s important for plumbers and installers to have the correct information, products and advice regarding hygiene to reassure customers moving forward. More and more research studies are demonstrating how buildings should be properly maintained to improve health and hygiene and, importantly given the Covid-19 outbreak, avoid the potential spreading of viruses. After the 2003 SARS epidemic, the World Health Organisation and Hong Kong Health Authority discovered that it’s possible for viruses to spread through pipework via wastewater and dried out water traps, with contaminated air travelling through an airborne transmission route, aided by bathroom extract ventilation.

Waterless traps During lockdown, when many buildings were left underused, water-filled traps were at risk of drying out. When this happens, foul sewer air, gases, bacteria and – according to the research – viruses, can escape from waste discharge systems, into occupied spaces. This can lead to several issues for those returning to the buildings, as well as to any occupants who were still present in the buildings during lockdown. A key option for plumbers to reduce this

emergency repair is to resolve blockages in traditional water traps and this is because of their curved design. They can also easily fail due to evaporation, siphonage or leaking. Using a waterless trap avoids all of this, while bringing the same levels of protection expected.

A plumber’s advantage

Another hygiene benefit that waterless traps bring is that the build-up of waste material is reduced risk and ensure ultimate hygiene within a space is by installing waterless traps. As opposed to traditional water traps, which use water to create a seal between the inside of the building and the sewer below, waterless traps such as the Osma HepvO contain a silicone valve and self-sealing mechanical flap, meaning they cannot dry out. This reduces the risk to occupants of coming into contact with any harmful bacteria or viruses. Another hygiene benefit that waterless traps bring is that the build-up of waste material is reduced. This is because when water enters the silicone valve, the trap opens until the flow of the water stops, forming a tight seal and stopping any stagnant water from forming. Additionally, one of the most common types of

40 NOVEMBER / DECEMBER 2020 PROFESSIONAL HEATING & PLUMBING INSTALLER

The benefits of having a waterless trap are obvious for homeowners, but they can be highly advantageous for plumbers and installers too. For example, HepvO features a sleek design and is able to be installed both horizontally and vertically. Compared to traditional solutions, this massively helps on space saving, which is ideal in cramped areas where it may be difficult to carry out installations, such as under baths and behind sinks. Waterless traps are also extremely versatile and are suitable for a range of uses, from sanitary applications to air-conditioning units.

Peace of mind Although waterless traps have been around for many years, when it comes to protecting public health and maintaining hygiene levels, it’s more crucial than ever to give end-users that extra peace of mind. With everyone doing their part to adapt to a new normal, it’s an important time for plumbers and installers to be aware of the alternative options available. BOOSTING THE MAINS Salamander Pumps explains the benefits of boosting a home’s mains water performance, and demonstrates how it is done.

I

n a study by Salamander Pumps, 40% of households reported that low water pressure has an impact on their day-to-day lives. There are simple solutions on the market that plumbers can install to boost a home’s mains water performance. One of these solutions is Salamander Pumps’ HomeBoost – an intelligent, inline pump which will boost mains water flow up to the legally allowed limit of 12l/min. Fitted directly onto the home’s incoming mains supply, the HomeBoost pump recognises when flow is low, and quietly boosts the performance of incoming mains water. Ken Vance, Training Manager at Salamander Pumps, provides an

easy-to-follow, step by step guide to installing HomeBoost… HomeBoost has two separate applications – the first is for use on the incoming domestic cold water mains supply, and the second is directly on the combi-boiler cold water inlet. HomeBoost should be installed on the cold water mains supply to the house, after the mains stop tap or on the combi boiler inlet, depending on the installation. You can install HomeBoost horizontally or vertically but never upside down. It should also be installed in a position where there is adequate air flow to cool the motor and separated from any other appliances that generate heat, and where it is protected from frost damage.

The HomeBoost pump recognises when flow is low, and quietly boosts the performance of incoming mains water.

INSTALLATION GUIDE Begin your installation by unboxing the pump and reading the installation guide, this is key to avoiding common installation pitfalls. You can now begin to install the pump, here is how to do it in 8 steps….

1 I Turn off the mains Make sure to turn off the mains water supply at the stop tap and drain down the system. 2 I Cut the pipe Next, cut and remove a section of the pipe. The size of this section will depend on your method of connection.

3 I Attach fittings The HomeBoost Fittings Kit is also available and includes 22/15mm isolation pump connectors, outlet flash washers, and inlet filter washers, which should be fitted as per the picture 4 I Connect the pump Now, you can introduce the HomeBoost pump into its location and gently connect it to the pipework. 5 I Turn the mains water on Switch the mains water back on at the stop tap.

With the HomeBoost installed, you will then need to open the isolation valves, checking for any leaks as you go. Flush the inlet pipework and fully fill the pump with water by opening all the water outlets before electrically switching the pump on. It is critical to discharge water through; ● All the cold outlets on a whole house

application And ● All the hot outlets for a combi boiler boost application, using natural flow before switching the pump on electrically. This will ensure that the air has been discharged from the connecting pipe work and pump chamber.

7 I Plug the pump in Once you have ensured all air is purged from the system, checked for natural flow on the cold outlets, and inspected for any leaks, you can now plug in the the pump or connect it to a fused spur.

8 I Check for the green light The pump should now be displaying a steady green light, indicating that the installation is complete. Once the installation is complete, the household will see an improved shower

performance, quicker bath fill times and stronger flowing taps. To find out more about Salamander’s HomeBoost, which has recently been rebranded to black and gold, www.rdr.link/pu033

PROFESSIONALISM

IN A COVID-19 WORLD Covid-19 has impacted upon the plumbing and heating industry in a number of ways and it has been an challenging time. However, one positive element to come out of it has been an increased public awareness when it comes to matters of professionalism and public safety. As Tim Sainty, Membership Director at the Chartered Institute for Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) explains, this is an opportunity to promote prioritisation of working practices in the future.

A

lasting effect of lockdown in the UK has been an increased awareness of the importance of public safety and hygiene. It has been felt across all aspects of our lives, but particularly by those working in the plumbing and heating sector, many of whom spend their day-to-day working life completing jobs in domestic environments. The essential work that plumbers and heating engineers are required to carry out has meant they continued working throughout the pandemic, and as such were often facing difficult decisions about personal and consumer health and safety. Prioritisation of best practice and adherence to stringent safety standards ensured important plumbing and heating work could continue. The responsibility lies with the whole industry to ensure that this new found focus delivers a long-term shift in customer expectation and importance.

New working conditions The pandemic has meant an adjustment to new working conditions for plumbing and heating engineers. Social distancing regulations and the several months that many buildings were closed and then unoccupied for, presented a number of unique challenges. For example, the speed with which many buildings had to be closed down,

often with limited ongoing maintenance during the empty months, increased the risks associated with poorly maintained water systems. Stagnant, or standing water can cause conditions that increase the risk for growth and spread of Legionella and other biofilm-associated bacteria. As the prolonged lockdown was lifted, care had to be taken to ensure the safety of building water systems and devices. Likewise, engineers have had to adopt new ways of carrying out routine maintenance and installation work in people’s homes, with emphasis on adherence to social distancing without compromising work quality. The CIPHE has supported its members on these types of issues, with resources on its website to offer advice on how to maintain the high professional standard expected of engineers. Notably, the Institute also directly assisted in getting members back on site for government projects, clarifying critical worker designation in a bid to help with childcare issues and allow important work to continue.

Growth of professionalism Despite the impact of coronavirus and the uncertainty it has brought, already this year, the total number of new CIPHE applicants has increased by 120% when compared with 2019 figures. Furthermore, MCIPHE (Member) category applications are up by

72% year-on-year. Considering the events of the past year, perhaps these numbers are a sign of an adoption of a professional mindset and a desire to convey that to the wider public. The CIPHE has repeatedly stressed the frontline role played by members of the plumbing and heating industry when it comes to matters of public health and safety, and it is heartening to see this increasingly recognised.

Moving forward together It goes without saying that Covid-19 has been shocking and appalling, and its impact has been felt globally and, although perhaps less severe, it is likely UK-wide restrictions will be imposed once more. There is much we have already learned, as a wider society and as to the importance of our industry’s place in it. We have to collectively make sure that the attitude it has forced upon us, one that demands a considered and highly professional approach to public safety, remains in place in the future. Make no mistake, plumbing and heating engineers are very much at the heart of public health and safety, and the CIPHE is dedicated to supporting them in safeguarding the public. To find out more or to become a CIPHE member please contact Tim Sainty via 01708 463102 or tims@ciphe.org.uk

his new heat gun from Metabo – they call it the HG 18 LTX 500 – is a bit of a jack-of-all trades. Looking at it, and the accessories provided, it could be used for a number of tasks including welding plastics and shrinking cables. For me, however, it will prove its worth removing paint or adhesives from old pipework – after all, as plumbers we often find ourselves having to connect up to very old pipework that has several layers of paint attached.

Our previous method for cleaning up pipes would be to use wire wool, which to be honest has been quite a laborious task. In contrast, the cordless Heat Gun is a doddle to set-up, temperature selection is straightforward and, by using the appropriate detachable accessory we were able to concentrate the heat very precisely on the area of work.
