September 22, 2026 The Head of the Church is Alive and Well. How About the Body? “Christ is also the head of the church, which is his body …” Colossians 1:18 nlt “… Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church.” Ephesians 5:23 nlt “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.” 1 Corinthians 12:27 nlt St. Luke determined to write a complete and accurate record of what had been accomplished through the life of Jesus Christ. He began the first half - the Gospel of Luke - by saying just that. Many had written accounts of the events, but it “seemed good to me also,”he said, to “write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus.” The second half of his letter is what we call the Acts of the Apostles. “The former account I made,” Luke began, “O Theophilus of all that Jesus began both to do and teach …” So what seems clear is that part two of Luke’s letter is all about what Jesus continued to do through the church and by the operative presence of the Holy Spirit. The book of Acts finishes, taking the reader up to the present time at which Luke was writing. What this all means is that the New Testament Church is the continuing work of Jesus Christ on the earth! That means US … You and Me! We are the body, after all, declares the Apostle Paul. We are His hands We are His feet Given the chapter divisions assigned to Luke’s second letter, the last one is chapter 28. It has been said that we are writing the 29th chapter of Acts today with our lives. So, the important question is, what are we doing to be the hands and feet of Christ today? That lonely person that needs love and attention – they need Jesus, and you can be his arms! That single mom who is struggling to make ends meet and to be both mom and dad to her kids needs the encouragement and assistance of Jesus, and he wants to send you on his behalf! That person who has never heard anyone say “I love you” desperately needs to hear it, and Jesus wants to say it through you! The musical group, Casting Crowns recorded a song called “If we are the Body.” It passionately calls for the church to be about the business of reaching out to people on behalf of Jesus, the living head. The chorus asks: But if we are the body, Why aren't His arms reaching? Why aren't His hands healing? Why aren't His words teaching? And if we are the body, Why aren't His feet going? Why is His love not showing them there is a way? There is a way.
