June 9, 2026 Please Join Us For Forty Days of Prayer for General Conference
Seeking God’s presence
Please join us for 40 days of devoted prayer for blessing and unity
The Evangelical Methodist Church began in a prayer meeting in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1946. From our Discipline’s historical statement: “On May 9, 1946, in the city of Memphis, Tennessee, a small group of preachers and laymen met together for consultation and prayer, endeavoring to cope with the growing apostasy of the church. After long hours of waiting before God in prayer, they felt definitely led of God to organize the Evangelical Methodist Church.” 80 years later, we need the Lord’s guidance and presence now, just as our founders did then. Let’s spend time seeking God for His perfect will, His guiding presence, and His overarching peace.
PLANNING | June 11 - 20 : Pray for everyone making final preparations. Pray for the presenters and worship leaders as they plan. Pray now for safe travel for people coming from around the country and around the world. Pray for the work of our boards and committees. Pray now for the Holy Spirit to prepare an outpouring of His sweet presence in our worship times.
PEOPLE | June 21 - 30: : Pray for the people who will be attending the conference. Ask the Lord to infuse each member, delegate, guest, and student with a sense of who HE is, and what He wants to do in and through the EMC now and on into the future. Seek the Lord for how he would have each of us interact, share, debate, and select officers and leaders. Pray for unity and grace to be the hallmark of our assembly. Pray for peace.
PRIORITIES | July 1 - 10 : Pray that as we spend four days together working on a fairly tight agenda, we will remember our primary goals are to glorify God in what we say and do, and to proclaim the good news of Jesus to the whole world in every language, every culture, and every corner of this earth. What we do in these days must enhance those goals, not hinder them. Pray that we do not lose sight of our principles as we discuss our proposals and plans.
PROCEEDINGS | July 11 - 20 : Pray for the work sessions of conference business. Ask the Lord to transform what might seem to be our least spiritual business items into exciting opportunities to rejoice as we remember that He cares about the smallest sparrows and flowers - - how much more does He care about those things we do for Him. Pray that each presenter, speaker, preacher, song, video, and meal will be for our good, and God’s glory.
I am inviting everyone in the EMC to join together in a concert of prayer over the 40 days prior to the convening of General Conference on July 21st. As you can see in the flyer pictured to the right, each 10 days of the forty will encourage prayer for a specific set of issues. 1 - We’ll spend time asking God for divine guidance and blessing over the final weeks of planning; 2 - We will ask for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit on all the delegates, pastors, and leaders who will be attending; 3 - We will seek the Lord Jesus for a proper set of priorities in our agendas and actions; 4 - And we will finish by asking the Father, Son, and Spirit to so infuse our proceedings that we come away with a real sense of renewal and revival.
