January 13, 2026 In just a few days, you will receive the Kerusso newsletter – a combined January / February edition. The entire edition will be devoted to information about the coming General Conference in July. I’m aware that 27 weeks away sounds like a VERY long way off to you, but for those of us who have been planning the conference since mid-2023, it feels like it is just around the corner! It takes a lot of lead time to find and reserve a venue that can accommodate our needs, and we have found a great one! And, making sure that we contact nationally known speakers before their schedules are packed and impossible means a great deal of advance planning too. Besides all of that, we want to be sure you have enough advance notice because we want and need you there! One of the precious hallmarks of Methodism is a high priority on connection. We meet together for fellowship, camaraderie, sharing of best practices, accountability, and just good ol’ encouragement! Ministry can be exhausting and lonely, and our times together need to be uplifting, positive, and grace-filled. One thing I have learned in my 35 years of ministry is that change can be unsettling, especially when it isn’t communicated well in advance. That is why the General Council has wisely chosen to inform us about a proposal they will present at Conference in July. It will exercise the flexibility built into the Discipline by our founders regarding the election of our Superintendents. The 1958 Discipline reads: “The General Conference shall determine the number of General Superintendents and Assistants and shall elect them by ballot …” We have not elected more than one General Superintendent for many, many years, but Council believes that electing one IGS, and one Assistant IGS to oversee the work of the Global Conferences as well as the USA Conference Superintendents and their ministry to our churches will help posture us for health and growth.
